Abstract:

There are two versions of Aristotle’s will. One of them is found in Diogenes Laertios’ account of Aristotle in his Lives of the Philosophers, the second one is preserved (only) in an Arabic translation as a part of Ptolemy’s biography of Aristotle. A comparison of these two versions shows that the Arabic translation is a faithful rendering of a lost Greek version. This Greek version, furthermore, is not based on that preserved in Diogenes Laertios, but is rather an independent second version, whose function inter alia was to support the case of Aristotle’s son Nikomachos within inheritance disputes.

Abstract:

AbstractThe content of the Old Greek translation of Daniel iv-vi is significantly different compared to the so-called Theodotion version and the Masoretic Text. In addition, the best witness to the Old Greek version (papyrus 967) has an alternative order for the chapters: chapters vii and viii intervene between iv and v. The proposals by J. Lust and O. Munnich that 967 preserves a more original version of the content and order of the chapters for the Vorlage of Daniel are critiqued. Additional linguistic evidence that supports the theory that the Old Greek translation of chapters iv-vi circulated together independently is also provided. Finally, a hypothesis for the growth and stages of the book of Daniel that includes an explanation for the origins of the Greek versions is outlined.

Abstract:

Prefixed to the Old Greek version of Daniel 5 is a brief Preface that recounts some of the plot lines of the narrative. This article clarifies the nature of the Preface and discusses its significance for understanding the legend’s development. It is argued that the Preface must have derived from a longer version of the narrative, because it lacks elements intrinsic to the og and mt versions. These elements are isolated with the help of the typology of story forms developed in folklore studies. The unique variants preserved in the Preface suggest that it derives from a third, parallel version of the legend. This third version lacked a reference to the temple vessels from Jerusalem, which allows us to appreciate the role of the vessels in the og and mt traditions, especially how they integrate this story into a larger discourse about the fate of the vessels in post-exilic literature.

These include a summary of a version recorded by Nicholas of Damascus, which may descend ultimately from the Lydian historian Xanthos; a fragment of a dramatic version by an unknown Greek author; a brief description by Plutarch; Justin's summary of a version by Pompeius Trogus; and a version by Ptolemy Hephaestion of Alexandria, summarized by Photius. But the most famous and oldest fully extant versions of the story are those told by Herodotus and Plato.

Abstract:

Background: Maintaining dignity is important for successful aging, but there is lack of validated research instruments in the nursing literature to investigate dignity as perceived by the old people. Objective: This is a methodological study aiming to investigate the psychometric properties of the Greek version of Jacelon Attributed Dignity Scale as translated in the Greek language. Research design: A methodological approach consisting of translation, adaptation, and cross-cultural validation. A sample of 188 Greek-speaking old Cypriot persons drawn from the Hospital outpatient departments was asked to complete the Greek versions of Jacelon Attributed Dignity Scale and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. Data analyses included internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient), item analysis, and exploratory factor analysis using principal component method with orthogonal varimax rotation. Ethical considerations: The study protocol was approved by the National Bioethics committee according to the national legislation. Permission to use the research instrument was granted from the author. Information about the aim and the benefits of the study was included in the information letter. Findings: Cronbach’s alpha for Greek version of Jacelon Attributed Dignity Scale was 0.90. Four factors emerged explaining 65.28% of the total variance, and item to total correlation values ranged from 0.25 to 0.74 indicating high internal consistency and homogeneity. Mean item score in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living was 5.6 (standard deviation = 1.7) for men and 6.7 (standard deviation = 1.7) for women, and the correlations between demographics, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, and the four factors of the Greek version of Jacelon Attributed Dignity Scale were low; also in multiple linear regression, the values of R2 are presented low. Discussion: Demographic characteristics and degree of functionality seem to be associated with some of the dimensions of dignity but with low correlations; therefore, they cannot predict attributed dignity. Conclusion: The Greek version of Jacelon Attributed Dignity Scale is a valid and reliable tool to measure attributed dignity in Greek-speaking older adults, but further testing of the psychometric properties and other potential factors that may affect the attributed dignity is needed.

The relation between the Syriac Psalm 151 and the Greek and Hebrew versions This article studies the apocryphal Psalm 151, with special reference to the Syriac version in its relation to the versions of this psalm in the Septuagint and at Qumran. Four different sources of this psalm in Syriac can be distinguished, namely, a commentary on the psalms by Athanasius, a number of inanuscripts of the Peshitta and the Syrohexaplar, the manuscript 12t4 (containing the five Syriac apocryphal psalms as an addendum to the canonical psalms) and a number of other manuscripts with these apocryphal psalms. This psalm existed in more than one version in Hebrew. One version is reflected at Qumran in the psalms Scroll from cave 11 and another one in the Septuagint. The Syriac is dependent on the Greek, but clear signs of an inner-Syriac development can be discerned.

Abstract:

Siblings’ relationships are determinants of emotional and personal development. Although Greece is assumed a country with strong family bonds, no empirical research in this area exists; one of the reasons being the lack of reliable instruments. The SRQ is a widely used scale to measure this relationship. The aim of the present study was to translateand examine the psychometric properties of SRQ. One hundred and eighty five children and adolescents were recruited. Concurrent validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability and agreement between parents-children versions of the translated scale were investigated. Concurrent validity ranged from 0.29 to 0.68, the overall internal consistency was 0.86 and the test-retest reliability ranged from 0.58 to 0.78. Agreement between children-parents versions was significant only when mothers do the rating. Confirmatory factor analysis for the two important dimensions Warmth/Closeness and Conflict, which have been identified in the original study it shows that they are also present also in the Greek version. Thus, the Greek version of SRQ is a valid and reliable instrument to be used within the Greek population, for multinational clinical research and for comparison with findings from other countries.

Abstract:

The concept of the 'information society' has been systematically deployed to denote a new techno-socio-economic paradigm with information and communication technologies (ICTs) at the centre, which entails significant economic and social transformations and bears implications for governance and potential for development and quality of life. Departing from the deterministic view of information society as a set of uniform societal arrangements, the thesis examines its national variations, as they emerge from the interaction between ICTs and relevant policies with pre-existing social, political and economic realities. Drawing on a conceptual framework based on political economy and historical sociology, it proposes that the unfolding of any national information society is a contested process feeding on the historically formed relationship between the state and the national economy and society. This relationship is expected to inflect international policies and processes in quite idiosyncratic ways, leading to differentiated national information society trajectories, while the state is instrumental in articulating international policy directions with national societal arrangements. Identifying an empirical gap in the examination and analysis in semi-peripheral and middle-income countries, the thesis seeks to address evolving characteristics and dimensions of the 'Greek case' of information society, stressing the dialectic between European policy and the national socio-cultural, political and economic idiosyncrasies, the role of the Greek state, as well as the weaknesses encountered in the process. The emphasis is on the period 1998-2008, which includes the first comprehensive strategy and provides the opportunity to analyse preliminary results of the policies adopted. The empirical material includes relevant policy documents, quantitative indicators, personal observations, as well as a set of elite interviews with policymakers, ICT industry representatives and other actors involved in information society policies and processes.

Abstract:

This work concentrates solely on the Apocalypse in the Harklean Syriac tradition and is in two parts. The first deals with the manuscripts themselves, establishing what manuscripts are available of the Harklean Apocalypse and giving codicological details of them. Using these manuscripts a Comparative Text is produced of all the witnesses, which is used to show the inter-relationships of the manuscripts within the tradition. Also given is a full description of the Harklean 'critical apparatus' of asterisks, obeli, metobeli and marginalia as is found in the various manuscripts as well as 'Scholia' which also occur in the tradition. Finally, descriptions are given of the Harklean colophons found in two of the manuscripts of the Apocalypse. The second part deals with the methodology of translation from Greek used in this book. It covers grammar (verbal system, prepositions, pronouns, definite article and case system and word order) and use of vocabulary. The work presents an overall picture of the Harklean version as it is found in this book and provides data which can, in the fu ture, be used to establish the Greek Vorlage(n) of the Harklean Apocalypse.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Two major religions, Judaism and Christianity, use the ancient Hebrew Bible as Holy Scripture. These books were translated in the last three centuries before the common era. The oldest of these translations is the Septuagint, a Greek translation. Not only are the Hebrew and Greek texts that were involved in the original translation process missing, but precious little is known about the doctrine and translation methods of the translators of the Septuagint. Much can be learned about these crucial issues, however, if the translation technique followed by those ancient translators is studied by comparing the present Hebrew and Greek texts. A new method to determine and describe the translation technique of the Septuagint was proposed and tested in this dissertation. This method is based on the use of the Computer Assisted Tools for Septuagint Studies (CATSS) data base and statistical methods. The translation technique of the book Deuteronomy was described using different criteria, all of which measure the frequency of non-literal renderings. Three different groups of criteria were utilized, viz. the Tov criteria as proposed by E. Tov, criteria defined using the markers in the CATSS data base called the CATSS criteria, and grammatical criteria using the person of the verb. Each criterion was applied to the data base individually. The translation units were determined first, after which the translation technique found within the translation unit was described. The methodology implemented discriminates between significant and insignificant trends in translation technique. It became clear that the results of the different criteria indicate different translation units and different translation techniques for each of the criteria. Except for some criteria using the person of the verb, very little indication was found that the traditional translation units are supported by the data used in this study. In fact, it seems as if translation units should be determined before the translation technique is described. The translation technique should then be described according to the indicated units. Not all the Tov criteria could be utilized, but their results are in agreement to some extent. The CATSS criteria proved to be more difficult to implement than expected, but some of the criteria rendered excellent results. The person of the verb was discussed in detail using 12 different criteria. The results of the criteria utilizing the person of the verb are disappointing, and provide some scope for future research. The results rendered by this new approach are firm and easy to interpret. In addition, it is possible to utilize these results when dealing with specific text-critical problems.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die antieke Hebreeuse Bybel word deur twee godsdienstige groepe, Judaisme en die Christendom, as Heilige Skrif gebruik. Hierdie boeke is in die laaste drie eeue voor die begin van die huidige era vertaal. Die oudste vertaling is die Griekse vertaling, genoemd die Septuagint. Die Hebreeuse en die Griekse tekste wat by hierdie vertaalproses betrokke was, is verlore. Daarbenewens is bale min van die lering en vertalingstegniek van die vertalers van die Septuagint bekend. Indien die vertalingstegniek, wat deur hierdie vertalers gevolg is, bestudeer word deur die huidige Hebreeuse en Griekse tekste met mekaar te vergelyk, kan daar lig op hierdie probleme gewerp word. 'n Nuwe metode waarvolgens die vertalingstegniek van die Septuagint bepaal en omskryf kan word, is in hierdie verhandeling voorgestel en getoets. Abstract:

This thesis focuses on two separate, but related areas: the analysis of translation technique and the Greek texts of Daniel. Foremost in the research of Translation Technique (TT) in the Septuagint is the need for a model that is appropriate for the analysis of different ancient languages. In recent years there has been an increasing emphasis on the features of literalism in a translation, but it is argued in this thesis that the focus on literalism is inadequate as a methodology for the analysis of TT. The contention of this thesis is that the analysis of TT should incorporate insights from modem linguistic research. Therefore, the main purpose of this thesis is to develop and apply such a model to the Old Greek (CG) and Theodotion (Th) versions of Daniel. The existence of two complete Greek versions of the book of Daniel that are closely related to the same Vorlage (at least in chapters 1-3 and 7-12), furnish ideal examples for the application of the methodology. Unfortunately, it is no straightforward matter to employ the OG of Daniel, because the available critical edition can no longer be regarded as reliable. The most important witness to the OG version of Daniel is Papyrus 967, and large portions of this manuscript have been published since the appearance of the critical edition of the OG of Daniel in 1954. Therefore, in order to analyze and compare the two Greek texts of Daniel, it is necessary to evaluate all of the variants of Papyrus 967 in order to establish a preliminary critical text of OG. Once a critical text is established the proposed methodology for translation technique is applied to selected passages in the OG and Th versions of Daniel. An analysis and comparison of TT in OG and Th makes it possible to: 1) characterize the TT employed by OG and Th in detail; 2) determine Th's relationship to OG, i.e. is it a revision or independent translation; 3) demonstrate how the Greek texts can be employed effectively for textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible. On the basis of the analysis of Th's text it is also possible to determine Th's relationship to the body of works, which exhibit a close formal correspondence to the Masoretic text, known as Kaige-Theodotion.

Abstract:

The thesis conducts systematic studies of the Syriac versions of St. John Chrysostom's Homilies on the New Testamentandmdash;the Homilies on Matthew, the Homilies on John, and the Homilies on the Epistles of St. Paul. The thesis focuses mainly on sixth- and seventh-century British Library manuscripts, but is also concerned with the spread of the material over the course of centuries into different sorts of books. Pre-dating extant Greek witnesses by centuries, the main Syriac manuscripts preserve translations made during the fifth and sixth centuries and constitute unique textual evidence for students of the Greek. By analyzing the methods of translation, it has been possible to place the versions within the framework of the development of Syriac translation technique and to highlight methodological issues for those attempting to relate Syriac versions to their Greek source texts. The translation analysis includes Biblical citations. The analyses have shown that the Homilies on the Epistles were translated last and are the most literal. The Homilies on Matthew and on John were translated earlier, are relatively less literal, and most likely to have Peshitta or even (occasionally) Old Syriac Bible texts rather than direct translations from the Greek. Several of the Homilies on John are edited and translated, allowing a critique of M.-E. Boismard's interpretation and use of the Syriac version, which is seen to be unsatisfactory in several ways.

Abstract:

Currently, the risk analysis software SAPHIRE has implemented a common-cause failure (CCF) module to represent standard CCF methods such as alpha-factor and multiple Greek letter approaches. However, changes to SAPHIRE are required to support the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s 2007 “Risk Assessment Standardization Project” CCF analysis guidance for events assessment. This guidance provides an outline of how both the nominal CCF probabilities and conditional (e.g., after a redundant component has failed) CCF probabilities should be calculated. Based upon user-provided input and extending the limitations in the current version of SAPHIRE, the CCF module calculations will be made consistent with the new guidance. The CCF modifications will involve changes to (1) the SAPHIRE graphical user interface directing how end-users and modelers interface with PRA models and (2) algorithmic changes as required. Included in the modifications will be the possibility to treat CCF probability adjustments based upon failure types (e.g., independent versus dependent) and failure modes (e.g., failure-to-run versus failure-to-start). In general, SAPHIRE is being modified to allow the risk analyst to define a CCF object. This object is defined in terms of a basic event. For the CCF object, the analyst would need to specify a minimal set of information, including: - The number of redundant components; - The failure criteria (how many component have to fail); - The CCF model type (alpha-factor, MGL, or beta-factor); - The parameters (e.g., the alpha-factors) associated with the model; - Staggered or non-staggered testing assumption; - Default level of detail (expanded, showing all of the specific failure combinations, or not). This paper will outline both the theory behind the probabilistic calculations and the resulting implementation in the SAPHIRE software.

Abstract:

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system is the most recognized green building certification program in North America. In order to be LEED certified, a building must earn a certain number of points, which are obtained through achieving certain credits or design elements. Prior to LEED version 3, each credit was worth one point. In this study, we develop an inverse optimization approach to examine how building designers intrinsically valued design elements in LEED version 2. Due to the large dimensionality of the inverse optimization problem, we develop an approximation to improve tractability. We apply our method to 18 different LEED-certified buildings in the United States. We find that building designers did not value all credits equally and that other factors such as cost and certification level play a role in how the credits are valued. Overall, inverse optimization may provide a new method to assess historical data and support the design of future versions of LEED.

Abstract:

Two sets of seakeeping computations and comparative model teats were performed for a fast monohull in regular waves. The first set of computations used an existing three-dimensional frequency domain panel code that formulates the potential flow problem by means of the zero-speed Green function. The second set used a modified version of this code that implemented an advanced software module, newly developed within the European research project WAVELOADS, where the free-surface forward-speed Green function method based on the Fourier-Kochin formulation accounts for forward speed effects. Although this formulation provided a solid mathematical basis for obtaining robust and accurate numerical predictions, numerical inaccuracies prevented obtaining satisfactory results. For nearly all cases investigated, predictions from the original (zero-speed Green function) code correlated more favorably with test data than those from the modified (forward-speed Green function) code. For the fast monohull investigated here, practically relevant global load predictions based on the zero-speed Green function correlated favorably with measurements.

Concurrent Engineering (CE) realized faster time to market with great reduction of time, cost and energy. This old version of CE, however, focused its attention to production within an individual industry. It is process-focused. It is pointed out that if we expand CE from individual industry to a group of industries, greater increase of productivity and reduction of cost can be achieved. In this new version of industry-focused CE, overlaps will be eliminated and common functions across industries are pursued. Such seamless engineering will bring us a great reduction of energy consumption and it will contribute a great deal toward the establishment of the green society.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have the potential to reduce green house gases emissions and provide a promising alternative to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. However, PHEVs have not been widely adopted in comparison to the conventional vehicles due to their high costs and short charging intervals. Since PHEVs rely on large storage batteries relative to the conventional vehicles, the characteristics and design issues associated with PHEV batteries play an important role in the potential adoption of PHEVs. Consumer acceptance and adoption of PHEVs mainly depends on fuel economy, operating cost, operation green house gas (GHG) emissions, power and performance, and safety among other characteristics. We compare the operational performance of PHEV20 (PHEV version sized for 20 miles of all electric range) based on fuel economy, operating cost, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through Pareto set point identification approach for 15 different types of batteries, including lithium-ion, nickel metal hydride (NiMH), nickel zinc (NiZn), and lead acid batteries. It is found that two from 15 batteries dominate the rest. Among the two, a NiMH (type ess_nimh_90_72_ovonic) gives the highest fuel economy, and a lithium-ion (type ess_li_7_303) yields the lowest operating cost and GHG emissions. From comparing nine batteries that are either on or close to the Pareto frontier, one can see that lithium-ion and NiMH batteries offer better fuel economy than lead-acid batteries. Though lithium-ion batteries bear clear advantage on operating costs and GHG emissions, NiMH and lead-acid batteries show similar performances from these two aspects.

Abstract:

The packaging design is perceived as environmentally friendly when deploying established “green” conventions for design, materials, form, colours, and symbolism. The paper aims to determine which tea packaging design choices mainly influence consumer's impression of eco-friendliness. After the sustainable solutions for packaging form were examined, additional attributes of sustainability in terms of the materials were established. These were the shape of the packaging for the ease of use, closing solution, content visibility, printing paper perception, and other use-friendly attributes. Upon experimenting with six versions of prototype designs, following the guidelines of user-centered design, the final prototype has been selected for further development and testing. The alternatives for appropriate printing ink, printing pressure, and substrate were tested on various paper samples. Due to the various recycled substrate’s surface colours and morphology, the flexographic printing process resulted in various shades of image colours and line sharpnesses. To determine correlations between different attributes and make a final design decision, the subjective quality assessments were implemented.

Abstract:

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) relies on relatively larger storage batteries than conventional hybrid electric vehicles. The characteristics of PHEV batteries, as well as hybridization of the PHEV battery with the engine and electric motor, play an important role in the design and potential adoption of PHEVs. To exhaustively evaluate all the possible combinations of available types of batteries, motors and engines, the total computational time is prohibitive. This work proposed an integrated optimal design strategy to address this problem. The recently developed Pareto set pursuing (PSP) multi-objective optimization approach is employed to perform optimal hybridization. Each PHEV with chosen battery, motor and engine is designed for optimal component sizing using the Powertrain System Analysis Toolkit (PSAT) software. The methodology is demonstrated with the Toyota Prius PHEV20: PHEV version sized for 20 miles (32.1 km) of all electric range (AER). Fuel economy, operating cost, and green house gases emissions are simultaneously optimized from 4,480 possible combinations of design parameters: 20 batteries, 14 motors, and 16 engines. The hybridization optimization is performed on two different drive cycles—Urban dynamometer driving schedule (UDDS) and Winnipeg weekday duty cycle (WWDC). It was found that battery, motor, and engine work collectively to define an optimal hybridization scheme and the optimal hybridization scheme varies with each driving cycle. The proposed method and software platform could be applied to optimize other powertrain designs.
