Douvlis, Konstantinos P. "Reform through merger : a case study of the 1984 Greek police re-organization." Thesis, University of Essex, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.605168.

Full text
Abstract:
The reform of the Greek police force that took place in 1984 is a development that has received almost no scholarly attention, but it took the form of a merger between two historically independent police forces that had previously dominated law-enforcement operations within Greece, the Gendarmerie and the Urban Police. Following the introduction, a detailed historical introduction attempts to trace the roots of the particular features and unique characteristics of the two pol ice forces up to their imminent reform in the 1980s and so explain the internal suspicions which existed within the police force in terms of its jurisdiction and role (both political and social) and the perceptions and expectations of the public. In chapter three, the thesis focuses on previously unpublished primary documents authored by a key advisor to the government prior to its implementation of the 1984 reforms. The Plakias report of 1982 thus provides key insights into the aims and ambitions of the subsequent 1984 law. Chapter four provides a review of the literature on policing to further emphasize the unique characteristics of the Greek police force in terms of issues of accountability, cultural and political pressures, the challenge of change in what is inherently a conservative domain, and the emotive connections between the public and the police force that needed to be negotiated in addition to simply superficial structural adjustments. Chapter five establishes the methodology which incorporates the previously established historical context in conjunction with interviews with officers who experienced the transitions first hand. This analysis helps bring to light the cultural and political bias which runs through any attempt to implement institutional change by showing the crossover between historical context and first-hand experience. The empirical fieldwork which is the focal point of chapter six takes the form of interviews with police officers past and present to assess the success or otherwise of the 1984 merger itself. Chapter seven build on this fieldwork to suggest ways forward for the continued modernization of the Greek police service. Chapter eight gathers supplementary evidence from newspaper articles in Greece which provides a clear context and explanation for many of the views expressed in the interviews. The study concludes with an analysis of arrangements currently in place to guarantee accountability and effectiveness in the Greek Police force. It offers a generally positive evaluation of the merger and its aftermath, both in terms of the reform of the Greek policing system, and in terms of its impact on Greek society as a whole.

Abstract:
Educational Leadership
Ed.D.
Hazing in collegiate settings, both Greek and non-Greek, damages educational institutions’ reputations and creates liability as they seek to maintain the safety of their students. This study examines hazing activities that take place during the initiation process of Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs). Utilizing qualitative research, it provides insight into the motivations of undergraduates who participate in BGLO hazing initiation rituals. Using National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and Pennsylvania State Law definition of hazing, this study focuses on an underexamined population generally overlooked by researchers in this field. Examining BGLO members’ familiarity with hazing prior to taking part revealed three levels of awareness: not aware, moderately aware, and very aware. Participants also indicated what kinds of dangers they were aware of, how they became aware of such dangers, and other facets of hazing they knew about prior to their participation in the activity. Members chose to join an organization where they believed hazing existed due to various factors: Confidence & Past Success, Intrapersonal Benefits, Societal Benefits, Perceptions of Hazing, Personal Relationships, Compatibility, Lack of Options, and Following Traditions. BGLO members’ willingness to undergo hazing sprang from the following factors: Long-term Benefits, Validation, The Bonds of Initiation, Personal Relationships, Acceptance, Perceptions of Hazing, Explanatory Justification. Finally, participants in this study indicated five roles that hazing plays in the initiation process of BGLO: Producing Better People, The Cycle of Re-Creation, Organizational Benefits, Validating Membership and Not Worth It. This project highlights the failure of higher educational institutions to play a key role in protecting students, specifically BGLO members, from the dangers of hazing and offers remedies for that oversight, including anti-hazing policies, hazing support services, membership intake processes, and fraternal organization advisement implications, as well as areas for future research on this topic.

Abstract:
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) holds the potential to improve contemporary business operations, which are redefined frequently based on the demands of global competition. There are numerous EDI systems, which an enterprise can choose to adopt in order to meet its needs and goals. International literature demonstrates a variation of views regarding the adoption of new technologies, which differ according the size of each organization along with internal and external impediments and determinants. The use of EDI worldwide has gained a positive acceptance by commercial companies, industries and service providers, followed by rapid adoption mainly in the processes of large organizations. Conversely, the predictions of previous years’ studies have not been materialized to the expected extent. In Greece in particular, there is low penetration and a reluctance to adopt EDI technologies by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This study is based on the theoretical framework of Technology, Organization and Environment (TOE). A qualitative multiple case study research design has been used, in order to provide further insights on the factors that affect the decision of Greek SMEs in adopting EDI technologies. The significance of the perceived direct and indirect benefits, the effects of the perceived financial cost and technical competence and the importance of industry and government pressure on corporate level, are analyzed and discussed. An empirical support of the low penetration of EDI in the Greek SMEs' community is also provided. This research contributes in the existing knowledge about EDI adoption decisions regarding Greek SMEs by providing a variation of views, further insights on how Greek SMEs behave and react during the current economic recession and a new cost factor that emerged within the analysis of multiple cases. Avenues for future research are recommended in order to expand this study's findings in the field of corporate IT innovation.

Amountzias, Chrysovalantis. "Market imperfections and price rigidities : a case study of the Greek manufacturing industry." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/17254.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the market conditions under which the Greek manufacturing sectors operate, and provides a formal measurement and determination of the observed degree of rigidity in nominal prices using panel modelling techniques. Two parameters in particular are found to capture the essence of market imperfections and price rigidity arising from various sources: the first parameter is conjectural variation elasticity which defines the degree of market divergence from perfect competition; and the last parameter refers to the speed of price adjustment towards the equilibrium level, which is estimated along with a set of important factors that affect this parameter. The data sample of this research consists of 56 3-digit manufacturing sectors, as defined by Eurostat (NACErev2) over the period 1980-2012, while the econometrical approach mainly incorporates the Fixed and Random Effects Model for panel data. The estimation process is divided into four steps: in the first step, the degree of market power and the speed of price adjustment are estimated for the whole manufacturing industry; in the second step, the same process is reiterated for the 3-digit sectors individually; in the third step the estimations are conducted for each year over 1980-2012; in the last step, the effects of a set of variables on the speed of price adjustment are estimated in order to provide an adequate interpretation of how market imperfections and price rigidities can be formed and how they relate to each other. By using the Greek economy as a case study, the empirical results provide significant evidence of a degree of market power similar to the one of a duopoly accompanied by relatively slow price adjustment in the 56 manufacturing sectors and the 33 years over 1980-2012.

Syrengelas, Emmanouil. "Seeking for obstacles to achieve feasible interventions within NGOs with the use of Participatory Design : A study in “Network for children’s rights” Greek NGO." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för informatik (IK), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-73264.

Full text
Abstract:
Non Governmental Organizations have a mission to improve the conditions of the whole or a part of the local societies in the place where they are active. “Network for children’s rights” is a Greek NGO that mostly aims to fight for and ensure the appliance of children’s rights as these have been embodied in national and European Union legislation and international treaties. Its employees are working hard to fulfill their everyday tasks and serve the children members. The scope of this study is to seek for major obstacles in order to achieve feasible interventions within NGOs with the use of Participatory Design. PD methodology is considered a fruitful one to engage the employees and other stakeholders who are affected by a problematic situation into the following processes: 1) to co-research the situation inside the working, social, financial and legal context, 2) to express their feelings, opinions, ideas on how the situation can be improved according to their needs, 3) to co-design and evaluate the solution. To fulfill the scope, a PD study in the NCR was conducted. The outcome of the study as well as its whole process were evaluated. Two major obstacles were found. The first and most significant one has been the very small percentage of representation of the stakeholders of the NGO who participated in the study. The second one has been the lack of collaborative language games to ensure mutual understanding among participants. A researcher should pay extra attention to overcome these obstacles and future studies may provide with new tools that confront them.

Charalampopoulos, Vasilis. "The practice and ideology of New Public Management (NPM) : the Greek NHS at a time of financial austerity." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/25701.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the practical and ideological implications of the New Public Management (NPM) paradigm as introduced in Greece by the so-called “Troika”, a sobriquet referring to a triumvirate comprising representatives of the IMF, the European Union, and the European Central Bank. In the past, attempts had been made by Greek officials to implement managerial practices within the Greek National Health Service (NHS) and the hospital sector in particular, albeit at a more leisurely pace than that of other countries’. On arrival to Greece the Troika imposed a number of changes to improve the country’s public services; and set a brisk pace to accelerate their implementation. The present doctoral thesis seeks to critically evaluate the issue of whether those reforms, especially those salient to the Greek NHS system, are true manifestations of a shift in the NPM paradigm or whether they represent yet another archetypal Greek public sector restructuring. It will also evaluate responses to and outcomes of the successive reforms in the Greece’s NHS system, ascertain the factors contributing to and/or impeding the adoption of those reforms, and identify new opportunities for growth. In order to gain access to a more profound insight into the Greek context, the collection of secondary data provides, among other things, an historical background of Greece’s public healthcare system; reviews the system’s characteristics in terms of healthcare policies, and probes into the state of working conditions within public hospitals. The heightened managerial spirit prevalent in Greece at the moment and brought about by the Troika’s tenure, has made it necessary for the literature review of the present work to focus on the ways that managerial practices and ideologies are imposed on other countries so that their public sector dysfunctionalities may be rectified. Drawing on the literature reviewed, the study develops an integrated analytical framework anchored in NPM, so as to test it in the Greek case and contribute to understanding the Greek NHS organisational realities as well as to evaluating how the new changes have been evolving and faring within Greece’s healthcare organisations. The framework is comprised of a review of the NPM paradigm so as to contextualise the Greek reforms in terms of ideology and practices; a review of Principal-Agent Theory (PAT) for illuminating the interrelationships and involvement of the key actors with the reforms; and a review of Critical Realism (CR) for assisting to reveal the underlying mechanisms and structures that bind the actors with the organisations and their development. Apart from providing the conceptual basis of the thesis, the framework also serves in informing its methodological design (i.e., generating the interview schedule), analysing the findings, and steering the discussion. The study adopts an in-depth, qualitative research approach that views social life within organisations in terms of processes, events, actions, and activities between key actors as factors unfolding over time. To that purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the key stakeholders of the Greek NHS system: State hospital doctors, hospital managers, and policymakers. The contribution of the study is an in-depth analysis of reform implementation as carried out in Greece’s medical system which now stands, within a turbulent economic and political context. By means of that analytical framework, it is shown that Greece is a sui generis case whose context and historical background are altogether different than those of other countries’. Moreover, the framework demonstrates that, despite the fact that NPM is firmly ensconced, as far as practice and ideology go, it is too soon to be drawing any conclusions: NPM is still in its infancy and reforms to the Greek NHS system have yet to be finalised as they continuously stumble on the inefficiencies and blunders of the past which hinder them from functioning properly. Last, the thesis does possess one more unique feature: it delves into the thinking, manoeuvres, and behaviour of the Greek healthcare professionals as a group, a world rarely if ever explored by empirical studies.

Abstract:
The issue of environmental sustainability is rising nowadays, which made the organisations to survive the planet. Accordingly, the governments are giving support to organisations for taking steps to achieve the environmental sustainability. To achieve the environmental sustainability, it is needed to bring change in organisations. Besides, Information Technology plays a significant role to develop novel processes and technologies to control the environmental loads for achieving environmental sustainability. This study is based on three mainstay concepts: Change Management, Green IT, and Organisational Culture. This research is intended to identify Green IT initiatives to achieve the environmental sustainability through change management and organisational culture in the organisations. A change management model is ultimately presented in the analysis, which describes the process of change management within an organisation based on the three main concepts mentioned above. This study is an investigation based on literature reviews and two case studies (Tetra Pak (Pakistan) and Panasonic (Sweden)). Case Studies have been carried out to verify the commodity of change process model (theoretical framework) and change management model. The research is also aimed to find, if the investigated organisations ultimately capture the targeted result, when willing to bring Green IT in their organisational systems.

Sapounas, Nikolaus V. "Leadership and leadership dramaturgy in Greek organizations." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.553685.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research revolves around the fact that dramaturgy, especially at the organizational level and in particular in Greek organizations, has not been explored in-depth before. In other terms, the study tries to break free from the dramaturgical 'small case studies' approach that was pursued hitherto and formulate a theory on organizational studies that is absent so far. By doing so, the study combined leadership dramaturgy with ideas of social network analysis. Consequently, in order to examine the theory's validity a total of 126 interviews and 216 questionnaires were employed, in Greece, across three different sectors, namely, the public service sector, the defense sector and the business sector, and within a total of eight organizations in two different cities. The specific approach included cultural aspects hence, making cross-cultural comparisons possible. Moreover, so as to develop further- understanding in leadership dramaturgy ethnography was utilized for atime span of about ten , months. The empirical findings indicated that leadership dramaturgy exists in all regions of an organization and when an objective is to be obtained the employees' interactions are goal- driven, a range of facades are implemented and social network's networking is utilized. Furthermore, although Greek organizations were structured around Anglo-Saxon models differences were observed in their operational level that was due to cultural influences. Finally, the theory's propositions and examinations in the present study provide an alternative way of approaching leadership dramaturgy.

Abstract:
The pursuit for environmental sustainability of business firms and the active participation of not-for-rofit organisations worldwide in proactive deal with environmental problems in recent decade have contributed a great effort to the environmental movement. One reason is related to the environmental degeneration in some regions and the increase in individual environmental footprint that urges the societal change in socio- cological responsibility. The other reason is the recognition of green rewards that environmental performance brings to a firm, including both intrinsic outcomes and extrinsic outcomes ensuring sustainable development goals. This thesis envisions an eco-living future of clean, safe, and healthy toward which the participating organisations' environmental orientations need to comply to corporate ethics of green mission in terms of reducing social inequality and preventing environmental crisis. This requires the appropriate enablement of corporate environmental performance of no below standard and no extremism from both green and nongreen actors. In corporate green mission, employees are accountable for their participation in environmental practices. Their pro-environmental attitudes and pro-environmental behaviours determine their corporate environmental performance, which is conceptualized to encompass environmental management and environmental operation practices. To both the pioneers and the newcomers in this green field, forging a pro-environmental workforce of talented managers and fully skilled workers is vital to the organisational survival and success provided they have ecological value congruence and are willing to engage in focus environmental orientation, meaning organisational pro-environmental behaviours. Therefore, attracting the fit pro-environmental individuals should be executed in a consistent manner to recruit and maintain their environmental performance as well as to remove their intention to leave early. Since green recruitment and selection is the foremost in the green organisational life cycle to guarantee pro-environmental workforce in quality, green candidate attraction is worth doing in a proactive manner in order to recruit, attract, identify and select the right type of pro-environmental talents. However, in the context of blooming Marketing and greenwashing or in case where there is dishonesty on environmental characteristics of both recruiters and applicants, how the organisational attraction should be conducted in a pro-environmental and corporate ethic manner to generate early the job seekers' positive perceptions of organisational attractiveness for environment in the one part and detect the fit ones in the other? Likewise, due to recent decades' rapid changing life of manipulation and deception, particularly in an « arms race », what key signalling factor is to make the pro-environmental talents and potentials recognise a true pro-environmentalemployer who is compatible with them? Which pro-environmental signal is hard-to-fake? From the tenet of signalling theory and from a knowledge-based view, this thesis responds to these emerging issues by researching into the insight of management of green organisational capacity and green recruitment to attract existing and future employees, which are happening now. The overall findings indicate a stabilized environmental movement which is comprised of green organisational processes in conformity with optimal heterogeneity of green organizational distinctiveness representing the organizational ecological value to sustain an organisational hard-to-fake character. A model of « Handicap » principle conveying the ethics of pro-environmental attraction and practical implications for defining, recruiting, detecting and selecting the right type of pro-environmental talents with a focus environmental orientation of the employing organisation are recommended.

Magubane, Nokuzola. "An evaluation of change communication in ensuring the sustainability of change at Barclays Africa's first "green" building." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1017517.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to conduct an evaluation on the effectiveness of the change communications distributed to the occupants of Barclays Towers West, Barclays Africa‟s first green building, in ensuring the sustainability of the change after the move into the building. In addition, recommendations are made to improve the change communications directed towards the building occupants to ensure the sustainability of the change and for future moves to green buildings. The research paper is made up of the following three distinct sections: Section One – Evaluation Research Report: this section outlines the organisational and research context for the study, the objectives of the research and rationale for conducting the research. A brief overview of the key theories and models on change communication that were utilised in the study are discussed, and definitions of important terms are presented. The research methodology is also described which includes an explanation on the evaluation research approach utilised as well as the use of both qualitative and quantitative data in the study. In addition, the results from the research conducted are presented, based on three data collection methods utilised: document analysis, semi-structured interviews and a survey. The results are then analysed and discussed in relation to the literature reviewed on change communication. Recommendations are made on improvements that can be made to the change communications to ensure the sustainability of the change. Section Two – Literature Review: the literature, theories and important concept definitions of organisational change management, change sustainability, change communication and green buildings which are relevant for the research topic and have been used as the theoretical base of the study are explored in this section. A key component of the literature review is the description of the change communication theories and models: communication theory, Armenakis, Harris and Field (2007) Model, and the Barrett (2002) Model. An understanding of the theories and models is imperative, as the effectiveness of the change communications after the move into Barclays Towers West is assessed based on the elements of the change communication theories and models. Section Three – Research Methodology: the research methodology for the study is described in this section. Specifically, the research aims and objectives, the research paradigm, the population and sampling, data collection, data analysis and ethical considerations are outlined. A key component of the section is the explanation on how the data was collected and analysed in the study and the sequence. The post move communications and artefacts and meeting presentations were collected first. The qualitative data was analysed and used to determine the questions for the semi structured interviews. Semi-structured one on one interviews were then conducted. The qualitative data and the change communication theories and models used in this study were used to determine the questions for the online survey. An online survey tool was used to administer a predominantly five point Likert scale questionnaire with an invitation to participate emailed to the building occupants. The quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistical analysis. Research Findings: The key research findings revealed that the messages communicated to the occupants after the move into the building have been mainly focused on operational matters and rarely on educating occupants on the green aspects of the building. A large majority of the survey respondents were aware of the building facilities, details and required behaviour. However it was found that the occupants, Line Managers and Senior Management are not displaying the required behaviour for a green building and do not know how to use some of the building facilities. A major gap was found in communicating with people moving into the building. In addition it was found that some of the information communicated to occupants is outdated. Written communications are used extensively and face to face communication is rarely used to communicate with the occupants. As a result, a number of changes are required to improve the effectiveness of the change communications to the occupants of Barclays Towers West. The improvements include communicating to new occupants; utilising additional communication channels; focusing communication messages on educating occupants on the strategic objectives for the building; rationale for building features and facilities; how to use the facilities and the impact of their behaviour on the building objectives being achieved.

The Green Supply Chain has become a global issue due to its negative effects on the ecological environment, the economy and general livelihoods. GSC is widening the conventional supply chain to incorporate practices aimed at reducing the environmental effect of a product during the whole cycle, such as green construction, cost savings, the removal of hazardous materials and the recycle and re-use of goods. This research aimed to examine the impact of GSC on the performance of organizations with a concentration on the Greater Accra Metropolitan Region. The analysis used a detailed cross-section design. A basic random sampling technique was also used for the survey of fifty (50) respondents. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The study finds that the environmental effect of GSC on organizations is also significant. Again it was discovered that GSC has an economic and operational effect on organizations, but not to a very significant degree. Finally, it was revealed that the organizations are taking GSC steps to minimize or reduce the detrimental impact SC has on the environment, the economy and the organization itself.

Abstract:
Title: The Role of Organizational Culture on Green Marketing Level: Final Thesis for Master’s Degree Program Authors: Lucia Gido Chuwa  and Ukpemeobong Usen Ibokette Supervisor: Dr. Daniella Fjellström Examiner: Dr. Maria Fregidou-Malama Date: June 2020   Aim: The aim of this study is to explore the influence of organizational culture on green marketing. Method: This study applies a qualitative research approach on seven selected companies in Sweden and Nigeria.  We interviewed seven people using seven semi-structured interview questions and we carried out thematic data analysis by grouping the findings into common themes to guide our discussion. Result & Conclusions: This study concludes that organizational culture influence implementation of green marketing as it dictates what happens within the organization and how it happens. The organization that embraces environmental values in its culture needs to disseminate it to all employees to create common understanding and commitment towards its implementation. We also discovered a lower level of customer awareness on green marketing which requires more efforts by organizations and stakeholders to create this awareness or advocacy which will help firms investing on green marketing to sell their products. Suggestions for future research: We suggest a future study which could complement this study using a bigger sample size. We also propose a comparative future study which may help to highlight how implementation of green marketing in developed countries like Sweden differs from the developing countries like Nigeria. Furthermore, we suggest an explorative study on how best the customer awareness on green marketing can be enhanced so that to support green marketing. Contribution of the thesis: This study contributes to the body of knowledge about organizational culture, environmental sustainability and green marketing through highlighting how organizational culture influence implementation of different components of green marketing mix, which was an underexplored area. We also contribute that customer awareness is an important aspect to encourage green marketing Key words: Green marketing, green marketing mix, organizational culture, Sweden, Nigeria, environmental sustainability and Natural Resource Based View Theory.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Researchers have noted gender and racial differences regarding hazing practices within Greek-letter organizations (Parks et al., 2014). Black Greek-letter organizations focus on physical hazing practices, while their white counterparts focus on alcohol abuse and consumption (Kimbrough, 2003; Parks et al., 2014). As it pertains to gender, black Greek fraternities are more likely to participate in hazing activities, than black Greek sororities. This research has explored the perceptions of black Greek fraternity members and higher education administrators regarding anti-hazing statues and policies, hazing within black Greek-letter organizations (BGLOs), and its culture. It has been guided by the overarching research question: What are higher education administrators and black Greek fraternity members? knowledge levels and perceptions regarding anti-hazing laws and BGLO traditions and their effects on the BGF members? participation?

Abstract:
The focus of this report is directed to the consideration of the problems related to the difference between commitment of International Olympic Committee to better environmental approach and actual environmental performance of Olympic Games which suppose to follow this commitment since the Games of the year 2002. Mostly qualitative research methodology was utilized in this study. It was based on the interviews with representatives of Greenpeace and World Wildlife Fund, the organizations which are involved in environmental assessment of Olympic Games; exploration of the environmental requirements from International Olympic Committee for carrying out Olympic Games and changes in these requirements through years; evaluation of environmental performance of the past Olympic Games which needed to follow environmental commitment. The research showed that despite continuously improvement in the requirements through years the Host Cities are still managing to fail the preparation of environmental side of the Games. The unsolved problem of still vague requirements was revealed; lack of communication between Non-Government Organizations, which actually give environmental assessment of Olympic Games, and International Olympic Committee was discovered and some political issues were discussed. After the carried work it is recommended to enforce the cooperation between Non-Government Organizations and International Olympic Committee and create common system for evaluation of environmental performance, state more clear requirements for the ecological organization of Olympic Games and change focus from environment to sustainability.

Abstract:
When students leave home for college, many desire a sense of belonging. One way for students to cultivate this sense of belonging is by participating in formal and informal peer groups (Chickering & Reisser, 1993). Of all peer groups, Greek-lettered organizations, when serving as an effective peer group, have the most impact on its members (Chickering & Reisser, 1993). As Greek-lettered organizations evolved, pledge processes were created as a means of promoting group values and continuing traditions (Nuwer, 1999). However, this pledge process led to accidents and deaths (Kimbrough, 2003; Nuwer; 1999; Ruffins, 1999). As a result, Black Greek-lettered organizations (BGLOs) replaced their pledge process with a membership intake process (Kimbrough, 1997, 2003; Ruffins, 1999). Despite the end of pledging, BGLO members instituted 'underground pledging,' unsanctioned events that occurred before, during, and/or after the membership intake process as a way to continue the pledge process (Kimbrough, 2003). As a result, students still perceive the pledge process as an instrumental part of the Black Greek experience and continue to participate in unsanctioned pledge activities that lead to injuries and deaths (Geraghty, 1997; Jones, 2000; Morgan, 1998; Rodriguez, 1995; Ruffins, 1997; 2001). Very little research has been conducted on BGLOs. As such, it would seem that research is needed on how members experience and view the intake process. The present study attempted to address this gap by examining the activities that were associated with the membership intake process, as well as current undergraduate members' perceptions of the pledge and membership intake processes.

Abstract:
The global urbanization process occurs at an ever-increasing rate, appropriating ecosystemservices (ESS) from areas often several hundred times larger than the actualurban areas themselves. Such notions further press the needs of attaining sustainableurban development. According to recent research, an important element of such a developmentis to incorporate knowledge on ESS and ecosystem function into urbanspatial planning. This study investigates 1) how different sustainability aspects areaddressed by Stockholm’s urban planning organizations and 2) organizational barriersand opportunities towards better including urban ESS in the planning. The focal pointwas set to three environmentally profiled districts in Stockholm – empirical data wascollected through interviews with individuals within urban planning organizations andenvironmental urban planning documents. These data were analyzed through organizationallearning theory and an ESS analysis framework. It showed that in the twobiggest projects, the economic sustainability aspect is perceived as the slow driver; inthe third project, this was not as apparent. Further, there were two time aspects involvedin the learning process – a long-term process of evaluating and revising, and ajuncture-associated timing-aspect. Many interviewees experienced lack of commonsustainability strategies, which is partly related to the ambivalence and complexity ofthe sustainability concept. Even if interviewees understand greater sustainability implications, there is a need to translate it into pragmatic solutions. Thus, there is knowledgeaccumulation on ESS but it is currently held in the individuals, risking deteriorationif/when key individuals leave the organizations. Single-loop and double-looplearning is simultaneously occurring with symbiotic functions, however a doublelearning-loop on the full significance of urban ESS is yet to be completed. In terms oftriple-loop learning, there is currently a paradox in the requirements for it to occurthat the contemporary governance framework of Stockholm does not seem able to resolve.

Abstract:
Perceptions of greed permeate the popular business and management environment, yet the scholarly literature in these areas has given scant attention to greed and perceptions of greed. In three laboratory studies, I investigated both the antecedents and consequences of perceived greed. Contrary to a number of literatures' treatment of greed as simply a synonym for selfishness, I proposed that the three antecedents of perceived greed are distributive injustice, inference of a selfish motive to acquire, and relative deprivation. I then explored four key outcomes of perceived of greed: personal anger, moral outrage, punishment behaviors, and social distancing behaviors. Results demonstrated that perceptions of greed are formed when an individual experiences a distributive injustice, combined with an inference of a selfish motive to acquire, and that each of personal anger, moral outrage, punishment behaviors and social distancing are consequences of perceiving others as greedy. Relative deprivation contributed to perceptions of greed, but in a manner different from the hypothesized model.

Abstract:

Studies have shown that involvement in a student organization can improve the academic and psychosocial outcomes of African American male students (Harper, 2006b; Robertson & Mason, 2008; Williams & Justice, 2010). Further, Harper, Byars, and Jelke (2005) stated that African American fraternities and sororities (i.e., Black Greek-letter organizations [BGLOs]) are the primary venues by which African American students become involved on campus. This grounded theory study examined the relationship between membership in a BOLO and the overall college experiences of African American male college students at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI). Eleven themes were identified in the study indicating that membership had a positive impact on the college experiences of African American male college students at a PWI. The study also examined the perceptions of counselors and other college student personnel regarding their role in improving the academic and psychosocial outcomes of African American male college students. Participants indicated that their role is to provide academic and psychosocial support for these students; they offered strategies for PWIs to improve the persistence and success of these students. Implications for counseling, higher education, and Black Greek life are provided.

Abstract:
Every semester across the United States, countless students join Greek letter organizations. While some may recognize the Greek letters, many Americans do not know the racial divide within the Greek life system, and the difference of purpose those organizations hold. This study focuses on eight historically Black fraternities and sororities and more specifically, their chapters at the University of New Orleans, a university that throughout its history has had a predominantly White student body, and often fostered an environment overtly and subtly hostile to African-American students. Using oral histories, university yearbooks, and university newspapers this study demonstrates how Black fraternities and sororities at UNO promoted and supported the academic success of African-American students by emphasizing community service work, communal bonds, and connections to campus activities. These organizations provided emotional and academic support for African-American students and actively resisted the racial divisiveness present on their university campus.

Simosi, Maria. "The processing of conflict in organizational groups : a case study in a Greek industrial company." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1997. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1491/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to investigate the way in which employees in two departments of a Greek industrial company resolved conflict situations encountered in the context of their department. The premises are that (a) the positive effects of conflict for the organization are related to the way in which it is resolved; (b) the investigation of the phenomenon of conflict resolution necessitates the examination of employees' conflict handling behaviour during a conflict episode, as well as of their representation of the particular episode; (c) the bureaucratic culture of the organization and the wider social culture determine the conditions within which employees represent and deal with conflict situations. The research used a single case design to develop new ways to model the conflict resolution process. The use of open-ended interviews constituted the methods of data collection. Employees from two departments (Research/Design and Supplies) of the organization were selected. The analysis of data in the first part of the thesis led to the development of a net model, indicating patterns of conflict handling behaviour during any conflict episode; the generic structure of the net model, which was found to be common to both departments, was discussed in the light of Greek culture, as well as of the bureaucratic practices of that particular organization. On the basis of this analysis, a further analysis was made of the data relating to those nodes of the net model where employees were found to be involved in a decision making process. The methodology selected enabled the representation of the process of the conflict management problem by organizational members. The basic assumption incorporated within this methodology is that the conflict management problem can be represented in more than one way. The identification, via employees' discourse, of the way in which conflict situations are conceptualized in the context of the two departments, indicated how this representation relates to the wider social and organizational nexus within which it is embedded. The contribution of this study lies in identifying the conflict resolution structures and processes within two departments of the organization studied and, to a certain extent, the wider organization, while offering an insight into how this organization shapes the way in which conflict situations are processed by organizational members, using their own discourse.

Abstract:
MBA Professional Report
In this thesis, we explore the goals and requirements of green procurement in order to assess the Air Force's degree of success with incorporating the Defenses (DoD's) Green Procurement Program (GPP) into its procurement process. This thesis provides an outline of the federal policies and guidance regarding green procurement, including Executive Order 13514 (2009) and relevant parts of the Federal Acquisition Regulations. We examine the Air Force's progress towards a more environmentally friendly process, measured by the metrics set forth in the DoD GPP. To evaluate these metrics, we conducted an analysis to determine if the Air Force is implementing environmental considerations to the maximum extent practical. This analysis relied on the use of the Green Acquisition Gap Analysis (GAGA) model, which is a unique framework that we developed. The GAGA model fuses the personnel, platform, and protocol pillars of the Mandatory Pillars for Integrative Success (Yoder, 2010) framework with the Contract Management Process framework, which dissects the six segments of the contracting process: procurement planning, solicitation planning, the solicitation, source selection, contract administration, and contract closeout or termination (Rendon, 2007). Further, in order to document best practices for Air Force-wide dissemination, we identified the leading Air Force installations through our extensive research and collaboration with key leadership.

Abstract:
The current research focuses on the interface of business organizations and the natural environment. Specific patterns of organizational behavior were identified regarding the incorporation of environmental (green) issues into company operations and management processes. The research makes contributions on both a conceptual / theoretical level and on an operational level. At the theoretical level, the contribution is a new conceptualization of organizational greening processes and consequences at the organizational level which incorporates the inter-relationship of greening with organization climate ( culture). Previous research has largely ignored the importance of organizational behavior aspects of the . greening process and has focused primarily on the technical components of the change process. The major contribution is a new variance-type model of organizational greening which includes organization climate as a key component. A second theoretical contribution is a conceptual model indicating the interconnections between a number of previously established organizational climate constructs and the newly developed climate for greening constructs. At the operational level, the contribution is an instrument for measuring the organizational climate for greening and a methodology for identifying patterns of similar organizational greening behaviors. Thirteen business organizations located in the North West region of England participated in the study. Included were companies from the chemical, textile, pulp and paper, packaging, food products, ·automotive parts, building products and newspaper publishing industries. A combined quantitative / qualitative methodology was used. The quantitative portion of the research was based on an organizational climate methodology. The qualitative portion used personal construct analyses. COIl).bining these two sets of information resulted in the identification of four patterns of organizational greening. Organizational climate was identified as an integral component in the organizational greening processes. The results suggest.that high green climate scores are associated with two kinds of more ~ovative strategic approaches to greening; and lower green climate scores are associated with two kinds of less innovative strategic approaches.

Galanakis, Anastasios. "An investigation into the organizational factors that affect the export sales effectiveness in Greek exporting SMEs." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/3070.

Abstract:
This research aims to elaborate existing literature by investigating the impact of the organizational factors that affect the export sales effectiveness within sales force control systems; behaviour- and outcome-based sales control, reward and compensation schemes for salespeople, territory design satisfaction, firm size, export orientation of sales strategy and sales management experience in exports. A theoretical framework is proposed and tested on a sample of 160 Greek exporting SMEs. Research results provide supportive evidence of the positive contribution of (1) behaviour-based sales control; (2) outcome-based sales control; (3) reward and compensation schemes for salespeople; (4) territory design satisfaction, and (5) firm size in export performance. On the contrary, export orientation of sales strategy was found to have no significant correlation with export effectiveness. It appears that high-performing export sales units seem to make higher use of outcome-based sales control attributes compared to low performing ones. A positive association between reward and compensation schemes and (1) behaviour-based and (2) outcome-based sales control for high performing export sales units is identified. The effect of reward and compensation schemes for salespeople on export sales effectiveness is significantly higher when the intensity of export performance is lower. The influence of sales territory design satisfaction with export sales effectiveness is significantly higher when the intensity of export performance is lower. The findings suggest a significant positive relationship between sales territory design satisfaction and outcome-based control. They also indicate that the effect of firm size is stronger when the intensity of export performance is higher. Furthermore, a strong positive correlation between firm size and (1) behaviour-based, and (2) outcomebased sales control seems to appear.

College fraternities are routinely associated with alcohol use and hazing (e.g., Wechsler, Kuh, & Davenport, 1996; Allan & Madden, 2008). These outcomes can lead to troubling consequences for fraternity members, and other stakeholders (DeSantis, 2007; Syrett, 2009). The masculine norm climates perpetuated by fraternities may contribute to fraternity men’s alcohol use and hazing motivations (Kimmel, 2008; Syrett, 2009). However, not all fraternity members conform to hegemonic masculinity (Anderson, 2008; Harris & Harper, 2014). The masculine norm climates collectively espoused by fraternities may vary between chapters, and these differences may explain members’ alcohol use and endorsement of hazing rationales (DeSantis, 2007). In addition, organizational socialization tactics have been found to relate to the outcomes of newcomers (e.g., Ashforth & Saks, 1996), and these tactics may explain differences that exist across the population of chapters for the relationships among members’ conformity to masculine norms and their alcohol use or endorsement of hazing rationales. No prior study had utilized a large, multi-institutional sample to examine if fraternity members’ alcohol use or support of hazing rationales varied between fraternity chapters, or if the masculine norm climates promoted by chapters predict these outcomes. To address this gap, this study collected data from 2,678 undergraduates from a single college men’s social fraternity represented at 76 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Utilizing a critical postmodern quantitative inquiry, the data were analyzed through descriptive analyses and hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). The findings indicate that fraternity members’ alcohol use and endorsement of hazing rationales varied between fraternity chapters. Chapter heterosexual presentation climate was positively related to a member’s alcohol use. Risk-taking, heterosexual-presentation and playboy climates were positively related to members’ endorsement of social dominance hazing rationale, whereas the violence climate perpetuated by a fraternity chapter was negatively related to this rationale. Risk-taking climate was positively associated with the endorsement of solidarity and instrumental education hazing rationales. Investiture socialization climate was found to not moderate relationships among individual masculine norms and hazing rationales

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the growth of environmentally sustainable commercial building practices as a voluntary, market-based standard called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), created by the US Green Building Council. I address how environmental ideals became institutionalized and integrated into the design and construction of commercial buildings through the growth of this standard. My goal is to discuss the site at which an ideal becomes a part of organizational practice and to discuss mechanisms by which social movement ideals become institutionalized without the state as a coercive force.First, I look at the historical context in which the environmental movement and the green building movement emerged to see understand adoption of voluntary market-based standards. The USGBC was able to bring together three disparate forms: environmental ideals, the creation of a voluntary standard and a market-based profit focus. I examine how the decentralized environmental movement, the rise of "third wave" environmentalism and corporate strategic environmentalism and a lack of political opportunity made this new form a useful strategy for the movement. Then I examine the importance of the LEED AP accreditation program as a mechanism for integrating green practices into professional work by socializing them through three frames, the LEED system, integrated design and high efficiency buildings. I introduce a new model called hybrid professionalization to explain the integration of social movement ideals across an industry and with a variety of professional groups. Finally, I turn to the demand side of the field to examine the role of organizational consumers and their strategies to rationalize green building to stakeholders. I discuss various ways that green buildings allowed organizations to display and enact their greenness.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between best practice adherence and the ownership status of an eco-labeling organization. The research question that is aiming to answer is what key factors most often explain differences in the level of credibility between for-profit carbon management eco-labels and not-for-profit carbon management eco-labels in transnational environmental governance. The case studies of interest are the two certification agencies Verra and The Carbon Reduction Institute. The issue of credibility of eco-labeling schemes will be looked through a Green IR theoretical perspective and debunked with Neoliberal IR theory. The methods which will be used are Small-N comparison and Qualitative Content Analysis conducted through Index for Best Practices. The data for the study is acquired from the online platforms of the two case studies for investigation.

Abstract:
This quantitative study was used to determine the perceptions that may have caused a decline in membership in fraternities and sororities and to examine active organization involvement between affiliated and unaffiliated students at a single higher education institution in northeast Texas. Eight perceptions were given regarding fraternity and sorority life and why students chose to remain unaffiliated with fraternities or sororities. The instrument used was a modified version of the Extracurricular Involvement Inventory, created by Winston and Massaro (1987) and was administered to participants online via Survey Monkey. There were 206 participants total: 55.3% were female, and 44.7% were male. Regarding ethnicities, 47.0% were African American, 37.5% were Caucasian, and 15.5% were Hispanic/Latino. Out of the participants, 20.9% were in their freshman or sophomore year, 23.8% were juniors, 33.5% were seniors, and 21.8% were graduate students. Participants’ ages ranged from 18 to 32, with a mean of 22.89 (SD = 2.81). The research questions were analyzed using two techniques: logistic regression for the first question and multiple regression for the second question. Findings for the first research question indicated that lack of values, lack of diversity, poor academic attitudes, and a requirement of too much time were primary reasons unaffiliated students chose not to join a fraternity or sorority. Findings for the second question indicated that Greek-affiliated students averaged higher involvement intensity scores when compared to unaffiliated students. Practical implications and future research are discussed.

The field of Green IT has undergone many fluctuations and shifts over the years. From the promotion of its development to the formulation of product standard, Green IT is a field that is in a state of constant change. European Union proposed a framework for environmental directives (WEEE,RoHS,EuP,etc) that has withstood the test of time. This makes companies have to face the trend of the worldwide promotion in green products and the huge impact for the related industries. The majority of research in Green IT has focused on saving energy and reducing carbon. The research is still at an early stage in evaluating energy saving and carbon reduction, not to mention a paucity of literature on this subject. However, to date, there has been relatively little research conducted on Green IT. This paper will focus on the steps of Green IT for industrial. In this paper we present a conceptual framework for linking Green IT and energy saving and carbon reduction. In view of the preceding research purpose, major sets of research questions to be addressed in this study are as follows: 1. How to combine the companies' Green IT development with the government policies 2. For companies, how to save energy and reduce carbon to achieve the Green IT goal 3.
