Abstract:
This work explores the fragility of the Great Lakes and the environmental degradation we have caused. My main focus revolves around what the EPA considers to be the Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs). This list contains 27 rivers that flow into the Great Lakes, most of which are or have been areas of industrial and chemical pollution. Through installations involving photography, ceramics, and video, I hope to reveal the issues facing the Great Lakes and explore how people can help.

Abstract:
In 1881 an assassin's bullet changes the course of American history. Could it be that Julia Sand was the only one to foresee the destiny of the country? Familiar with now President Arthur's exclusionary politics, Julia writes and urges the President to reform his ways and unite the Republican Party. Great Emergencies is a stage play about the lavish dangers of The Gilded Age, but ultimately a cautionary tale about those of us whose voices are doomed to be forgotten because of the ephemeral and apathetic nature of human history.

Abstract:
Background: Corporate Responsibility is not a new concept however in recent times more companies are starting to use different kinds of responsibility disclosures. These disclosures are voluntary and corporations may use them in the way they find suits them best. There is a lot of research in this field and there is no single explanation for what Corporate Responsibility is and how corporations should relate to it. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the controlling owners of corporations and CSR disclosure. Method: We use a content analysis and a survey study to examine the relationship between corporate controlling owners and the CSR disclosure. Conclusions: Our results show that controlling owners have little effect on the different dimensions of CSR disclosure. We have however found some differences between the different owner categories where some categories are found to use CSR disclosure to a greater extent.

Britton, James. "Great Northern Warehouse." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-169109.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis project is a study of a complex of historic, railway-goods warehouses in Nottingham (UK) that were internally destroyed by a fire two decades ago. The site has has become an erstwhile symbol of the city, a stark reminder of both a past age of prosperity and the century of post-industrial decline that ultimately followed. Now facing the threat of demolition, it is questioned whether it is possible to rescue the intrinsic potential of these ruins to radically transport us beyond the experience of the everyday city, to a unique and inhabitable space of transition between past and present. This thesis also examins the changing role of the library in the 21st century and the future for this public institution as a vestibule for the transmission of local culture and history. This leads to the central question of the thesis project; is it possible - through the appropriate treatment of an industrial ruin - to begin a process of reconciliation with the past, one that can provide some kind closure to the cognitive dissidence caused by language and tone of this kind of architectural heritage and the limited prospects that city like Nottingham faces today.

Full text
Abstract:
The Great Schism was a period in European history between 1378 and 1417 during which two and sometimes three people claimed to be the legitimate pope. The Great Schism began after several cardinals argued that the election of Pope Urban VI in 1378 had been coerced by a hostile mob in Rome. The cardinals subsequently elected a different, competing pope, Clement VII. Different rulers in Europe supported one of the two popes, usually due to political expediency more than religious sentiment or legal arguments. The Great Schism eventually ended with the election of a single pope, Martin V, in 1417; however, the power of the papacy was dealt an irrevocable blow.

Shaffer, Ryan. "America's First Great Moderation." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2011. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/280.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper identifies America's first Great Moderation, a period from 1841-1856 of unbroken economic expansion and low volatility comparable to the Great Moderation of the 1980s-2000s. This moderation occurred despite a lack of central banks, low governmental spending, and barriers to interstate commerce during the antebellum period. I demonstrate this moderation in industrial production and stock market indexes and compare the first Great Moderation with the second in these economic factors. These results also call into question the conventional wisdom of the National Bureau of Economic Research business cycle chronology that the antebellum period was volatile and fraught with recessions. I then identify several possible causes of this stable growth in the effects of cotton prices, technological revolutions such as railroads, and wage and interest rate integration during the period, among other factors. Understanding these factors helps develop our understanding of the American antebellum economy and the causes of economic growth and stability, especially during these Great Moderations.

How does one explore the suburban home? Go in through the garage, of course. Sales, bands, suicides, and business startups: The suburban garage is the most culturally flexible space in the entire American domestic environment. In this flexibility, it stands opposed to many of the established notions of suburban domestic context. It is illustrative of the displayed, hidden, and forgotten wonders of the American home. Within the context of this thesis, established interpretations of the garage program are used in the form of metaphor and hyperbole to create differing typologies of the American home. The metaphors themselves have developed out of a very dense genealogy of American suburban histories and trajectories. They have a real history, just as they occupy a very real extant condition of the suburban context. The new suburban house typologies march toward the space of the surreal via the narratives that accompany each of them, allowing for an exploration into the existing domestic condition as well as a feverish and jocular critique of some of the norms of suburban life. The attempt of the research is to take on the exploration of American suburbia, using the very stereotypes and cliches that have come to define it.

Skaf, Joëlle. "With great power comes great responsibility : China's dilemma in responding to humanitarian crises." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/47041.

Full text
Abstract:
The People’s Republic of China has increasingly been asserting its role as a responsible power in international affairs, emphasizing its engagement in and contribution to UN peacekeeping missions and its key role as a veto-yielding Security Council member. This thesis investigates that while China continues to champion a strong conception of state sovereignty in interstate relations, it has signaled a shift from an ideological insistence on non-interference toward a more pragmatic approach to humanitarian crises. This paper demonstrates how after 2005 China has managed to position itself in a ‘grey zone’ of uncertainty, that is to say that China’s dilemma is wanting to appear responsible on the international level but also wanting to adhere to safe principles such as non-interference and sovereignty. Therefore, it is my argument that China will never fully endorse R2P or any alternative norm that will justify foreign intervention in a sovereign state. While China continues to show support for alternative formulas for civilian protection, such as the Brazilian ‘Responsibility while Protecting’ (RwP), as well as develop its own version of R2P, ie. ‘Responsible Protection’ (RP), it is not to turn “words into deeds” but rather to keep up with appearances. China’s current position on responding to humanitarian crises is ambiguous. The principles behind RP represent a very useful conceptual approach to the issue of humanitarian protection, but the probability of implementing them is virtually non-existent. RP indicates that China has been more responsive to external criticisms in recent years, but does not fundamentally help to discern where China stands on responding to humanitarian crises. Because of RP’s tight criteria, China ensures that in practice no intervention can ever fully be justified, while appearing to advance more ‘responsible’ approaches to civilian protection as its great-power status and privileged position as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council permit it to do so.

Tracy, Jared M. "Perception management in the United States from the great war to the great crash." Diss., Kansas State University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/13246.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy

Donald J. Mrozek
This study argues that after World War I, corporate executives continued a strategy of perception management (PM) to control Americans’ choices in the commercial sphere and to shape the economic and cultural landscape of the 1920s. The state used PM on an unprecedented scale in 1917 and 1918 to promote a model of loyal American behavior (as part its effort to manage the mobilized U.S. society), but the use of PM did not end after the Armistice. While many historians have seen wartime propaganda measures as the result of special fears and circumstances tied to a sense of pervasive national emergency, they fail to explain the continuation of comparable methods into the period of peace supposedly characterized by a return to "normalcy." Whereas most historical studies sharply delineate between political propaganda and commercial advertising, this study stresses leaders' continuous use of PM to promote their notions of what constituted typical, normal, even loyal American behavior in times of both war and peace. While not a contemporary term in the early twentieth century, PM offers an appropriate conceptual framework to analyze a deliberate strategy at that time. This study defines it as actions used to convey or deny selected information to audiences to influence their emotions, motives, and objective reasoning, resulting in behaviors and actions favorable to the originators’ objectives. During WWI, policymakers and bureaucrats concealed the state's effort to control people's behavior with claims of defending liberty and democracy. After the war, corporate executives used PM to manufacture consumer demand and encourage Americans to think of themselves foremost as consumers. A cross section of political, economic, and cultural history, Perception Management in the United States from the Great War to the Great Crash offers an original perspective that emphasizes the consistency between the wartime and postwar eras by highlighting leaders' ongoing use of perception management to control Americans' behavior.

Abstract:

Wong, Wendy H. W. "Paul Wittgenstein in Great Britain." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/33743/.

Full text
Abstract:
Most of the existing research on Paul Wittgenstein (1887–1961) focuses on his performing career in central Europe as a left-hand pianist and his commissions from the most prominent composers of the 20th century such as Richard Strauss and Maurice Ravel, and his favourite composer, Franz Schmidt. His British performing career and the compositions Ernest Walker, Norman Demuth and Benjamin Britten composed for and dedicated to him, however, remain relatively unexplored. By examining a variety of primary sources that are disclosed here for the first time, this thesis offers the first scholarly research into Wittgenstein’s performing activities in Great Britain in the 1920s–50s and his British commissions in order to fill a major research gap in Wittgenstein studies. Chapter 1 explores Wittgenstein’s self-recognition as a member of the Viennese aristocracy and the shaping of his musical identity, conception and taste, followed by an overview of the related primary sources that are currently located in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, a detailed summary of his performing activities in Great Britain and a discussion of the British reception of him as a left-hand pianist. Chapter 2 focuses on Walker and the three compositions he wrote for piano left-hand, two of which he composed before meeting Wittgenstein and one after, and the pianist’s attitude towards them. Chapter 3 brings to light the much-neglected composer Demuth and the two works he composed for Wittgenstein and discusses possible reasons why the pianist never performed them. Chapter 4 examines Wittgenstein’s first and only official British commission, the Diversions, Op. 21 by Britten, and investigates the interaction between composer and pianist in the compositional process and their differing conceptions of the work.

Kyriakou, Tania. "EU constitutionalism : the great simulator?" Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24799.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a normative critique of EU constitutionalism. Its aim is not to expose the flaws of EU constitutionalism by reference to the templates of the nation state and our inherited constitutional vocabularies, but to articulate an internal, immanent critique, which brings to the fore the internal contradictions of the EU constitutional order. The argument put forward in this thesis shows that the initial solely economic focus of the Community has influenced its gradual evolution into a political entity and has kept its current political character subordinated to economic definitions. Due to the specific conditions of its historical development (the process through which the EC Treaty was constitutionalised was to a large extent judicially driven), EU constitutionalism has been marked by a substitution of jurisdiction for politicisation. Furthermore, the legal outcome of this juridification has enshrined the exigencies of the market within its deepest structures (this will be shown through an analysis of the concept of EU fundamental rights). This double substitution of the legal for the political and the economic for the legal amounts to a simulation of the political; political power is in essence no longer present except to conceal that there are no effective mechanisms for the exercise of political power in the EU. At the same time, this simulation of the political functions in a deeply ideological way, because it renders invisible the existing structures of political economy and the asymmetrical relations of domination which have been established through them.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on four papers dealing with two different areas of mathematics.Paper I–III are in combinatorics, while Paper IV is in mathematical physics. In combinatorics, we work with design theory, one of whose applications aredesigning statistical experiments. Specifically, we are interested in symmetric incompleteblock designs (SBIBDs) and triple arrays and also the relationship betweenthese two types of designs. In Paper I, we investigate when a triple array can be balanced for intersectionwhich in the canonical case is equivalent to the inner design of the correspondingsymmetric balanced incomplete block design (SBIBD) being balanced. For this we derivenew existence criteria, and in particular we prove that the residual designof the related SBIBD must be quasi-symmetric, and give necessary and sufficientconditions on the intersection numbers. We also address the question of whenthe inner design is balanced with respect to every block of the SBIBD. We showthat such SBIBDs must possess the quasi-3 property, and we answer the existencequestion for all know classes of these designs. As triple arrays balanced for intersections seem to be very rare, it is natural toask if there are any other families of row-column designs with this property. In PaperII we give necessary and sufficient conditions for balanced grids to be balancedfor intersection and prove that all designs in an infinite family of binary pseudo-Youden designs are balanced for intersection.Existence of triple arrays is an open question. There is one construction of aninfinite, but special family called Paley triple arrays, and one general method forwhich one of the steps is unproved. In Paper III we investigate a third constructionmethod starting from Youden squares. This method was suggested in the literaturea long time ago, but was proven not to work by a counterexample. We show interalia that Youden squares from projective planes can never give a triple array bythis method, but that for every triple array corresponding to a biplane, there is asuitable Youden square for which the method works. Also, we construct the familyof Paley triple arrays by this method. In mathematical physics we work with solitons, which in nature can be seen asself-reinforcing waves acting like particles, and in mathematics as solutions of certainnon-linear differential equations. In Paper IV we study the non-commutativeversion of the two-dimensional Toda lattice for which we construct a family ofsolutions, and derive explicit solution formulas.

Abstract:
In manufacturing and army terms, Britain was not able or geared up to deal with the Great War. It was able to cope with a small, short war on the continent as part of a larger coalition but not the global crisis that came about. Britain s research and development before the Great War had been in the Royal Navy. The army had been neglected. At the outbreak of the war it had been planned for the navy to carry the burden of the conflict but this proved to be an erroneous course of action. Very early in the war it became obvious that the armaments industry was unable to provide the munitions to prosecute the war to a successful conclusion. The government had to set up the Ministry of Munitions in order to co-ordinate the manufacturing ramp up , mobilise and train the nation for total war in order to meet the requirements of the armed forces to fight the war and solve the crisis. After leaks to the press and political manoeuvring, the Ministry of Munitions was set up to take away the responsibility of the War Office to manufacture, procure and supply munitions. It was a masterstroke. The workforce was increased by the introduction of semi-skilled labour and many of them being women they brought with them the need for welfare reform in the factories. Those reforms had a positive effect upon the male workforce and productivity in general. Semi-skilled workers were trained by educational establishments throughout the land and many modern universities, like Loughborough owe their very existence to the Great War. Loos was fought and lost on War Office contracts, Arras was amply supplied by Ministry initiatives and the 100 Days campaign of 1918 was made possible by massive, British manufacturing output. In essence, British manufacturing won the Great War. The war was a crisis solved by manufacturing. The thesis focuses mainly upon the primary source document that is the Official History of the Ministry of Munitions, war diaries and publications written at the end of in in the years after the Great War.

Başan, Osman Aziz. "Great Seljuks in Turkish historiography." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9424.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to present for the first time in English the corpus of Turkish scholarly writing on the Great Seljuks and to assess the internal consistency of the individual conclusions. In the West, the Great Seljuks are studied in the context of medieval Persian or Arabic history in particular and Islamic history in general [Lambton, 1987; Morgan, 1994a; Frye, 1993; Kennedy, 1994; Hodgson, 1974; Lewis, 1993]. In Turkey, the perspective that has emerged is quite different. According to Turkish scholars, besides Biblical studies and missionary activity, from the 19th century colonialism and industrialization were the main driving forces behind the study of Islamdom. This was because Western powers had to learn the languages and religion of their subjects in order to administer them and for industrialists to sell their goods to them [Koprilli.i, 1940:xxviii-xxix]. The racially and religiously biased Eurocentric histories that resulted also prejudged the Turks' historical role as solely military and destructive, arguing that they had not made a single contribution that furthered civilization [Ibid. 149-50 & 1981 :23; also Berktay, 1983:14-5]. At the Sevres Peace Talks, a memorandum to the Turkish delegation clearly expressed this prejudice Qune 23, 1919). According to the Allies, the Turks had ravaged and destroyed the lands they had conquered in Christendom and in Islamdom, because it was not in their nature 'to develop in peace what they had won in war' [Berktay, 1992:138-9]. It is not surprising, therefore, that Atatiirk initiated the search for a historical identity outside the confines of Islamic history and the West's assertion concerning the superiority of Graeco-Roman culture [Avctoglu, 1979/1 :18-27; Afetinan, 1981 :194ff]. Having said that, the roots of modern Turkish historiography must be sought in the century before Ataturk founded the Society for the Study of Turkish History (April 15, 1931).

Abstract:
Like many other states Alabama was greatly harmed by the Great Depression. As a result of the economic woes facing Alabama the state government adopted many strategies aimed at improving the situation faced by the state as a whole. Some include changes in the strategies adopted by the two Governors of the 1930s, the effects of the Depression on one of the states key industries, changes to taxation, as well as the repeal of Prohibition and how it was connected to the Depression in Alabama. Additionally, there were many different variables that influenced state behavior, taxation in particular, in Alabama and other states. State per capita tax revenue more generally for the country as a whole will be analyzed through a regression analysis in order to determine whether state per capita income, per capita federal grants, return from crops, and other variables are statistically significant in explaining variation in per capita taxation.

Riddell, Linda Katherine. "Shetland and the Great War." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7771.

Full text
Abstract:
The Great War was an enormous global cataclysm affecting the lives of all inhabitants of the combatant countries and many others. The effects were not uniform, however, and, by assessing the experience of the people of Shetland, this thesis shows how a local history can enhance understanding of the nuances of an international event. The Shetlanders’ experience was similar in many ways to that of other communities, but had aspects that were unusual or even unique. Both local and national sources are used to investigate how the Shetland experience fitted into historiographical discourses on the war. These include: contrasting depictions of the pre-war era as a ‘Golden Age’ or a period of upheaval and conflict; the extent of militarism in pre-war British society; the putative reasons for volunteering for armed service and the controversy about conscription; reactions to the outbreak of war and attitudes towards the enemy and the Government’s handling of the war; the situation of women; and the extent of change and continuity at the re-adaptation to peace. In addition, the thesis explores two related and recurring themes. One of the profound influences on Shetland was its geographical location, which is related here to theories about local and regional history and concepts of ‘islandness’, ‘peripherality’ and ‘place’. Assertions of a Shetland communal consciousness and identity related to a distinctive local experience are also scrutinised. The disparate effects of the war are studied through the experience of different sections of the population. Despite their perceived remoteness, Shetlanders were aware of prewar international antagonisms, especially as their islands became important for Britain’s defence and war strategy and their patriotism came under suspicion. This resulted in recruitment, deployment and casualties for the local armed forces being atypical in the UK. Servicemen’s contemporary writing showed both conformity to prevalent themes and affirmations of local identity. Shetland provided a base for naval operations important to Britain’s victory; relationships between the Navy and Shetlanders were sometimes difficult and visiting servicemen perceived Shetland as remote and different. Examination of the economic consequences of the war and the reactions of Shetland society illustrates how the community’s identity was expressed in the war effort and strengthened, even when national interests were paramount. Finally, commemoration is recognised as both a national movement and an expression of local identity and pride in Shetland’s contribution to victory.

Abstract:
This work aims to explain the performance of the Brazilian economy throughout the period of the Great Depression. We propose a general equilibrium, open economy model in which the Brazilian government can improve the terms of trade by taking advantage of Brazil\'s monopolistic position in international coffee markets. It burns a share of coffee production in order to influence international prices, thus containing the impact of the Great Depression on the domestic economy\'s supply of foreign consumption and investment goods. We find that our coffee burning mechanism is capable of improving the performance of the economy for some of our assumptions about the share of coffee that is destroyed. Our models also fits with different degrees of success the data on international coffee prices.

Abstract:
How do organizations assess and explain their performance? Prior studies have attempted to demonstrate that, like individuals, organizations take credit for good performance and blame poor performance on influences in their environment. However, these studies have found only a weak relationship between performance and attribution at the level of the firm. This dissertation seeks to elucidate this relationship by conceptualizing firms as social agents and by combining aspiration and attribution theory for the first time at the level of the firm. Analysis of performance explanations by large, public manufacturing firms in 2004 and 2005 revealed that firms' performance explanations correlated with their cognitive experiences of success and failure. These findings further understanding of organizational cognition, attribution, and image management.

The objective of this paper is to seek insights into the Great Recession, which started after the Financial Shock of 2008 and still casts a shadow on the growth of Developed Economies. Common features such as near zero interest rates, disappointing growth and low inflation - with a constant fear of deflation - have been observed in most of these countries in the last few years. The Secular Stagnation Hypothesis argues that the causes are a depressed demand, both for investments and finished products and services, and that to avoid a deflation trap governments should step in, helping economies reach their potential again. The Credit Supercycle Hypothesis puts the deleveraging cycle on focus: the large credit expansion that happened prior to the shock must be dealt with, through inflation, growth, restructuring or a combination of those, before economic agents go back to their normal behavior. The analysis of their main differences leads to the investigation of the credit cycle and its impact on productivity growth. Two approaches are used, with the time frame ranging from 1995 to 2014: a Vector Autoregressive (VAR) analysis focused on twenty developed countries and a Real Business Cycle analysis of the American Economy, both replicated from previous studies with similar focus, but different context. The results show the importance of credit formation to the growth of productivity, both directly and through fixed capital investment, and also that the low productivity growth on recent years may be not a symptom of slow technological improvement, but instead caused by the lack of credit access, notwithstanding the low interest rates and credit spreads. Policy makers overlooking this evidence might be surprised by an unforeseen rise in productivity growth after the financial system returns to a more normal behavior.

Abstract:

The pace of technology development shapes the landscape of almost every industry today. The words innovation, digital transformation, process automation are synonyms of success. The most successful corporations nowadays understand that technology should not be a standalone initiative gated within the IT department, to achieve an impact, technology must become a part of company's DNA along with its brand strategy or culture. The study examines the role of the CTO, which has been relatively poorly characterized by research to date. This research characterizes how CTOs view their job description, notably how they balance internally-focused attention with external responsibilities. This work draws on a quantitative analysis of 100 CTOs from Linkedln to understand their tenure duration and career history. We also collected primary data through interviews with 20 CTOs to understand their activities, responsibilities and the context that influences the span of impact. This work posits five Personas of CTOs: The Evangelist, the Anchor, the Coordinator, the Visionary, and the Strategist in various corporate settings. The study further examines the relationship between the career path of the CTO, his/her responsibilities and impacts in current role. The study indicates that the CTOs' responsibilities align most closely with the Coordinator and the Anchor personas. Both responsibilities and personas showed coherent distribution relative to the company maturity giving the opportunity to draw a CTOs' lifecycle where the Anchor is more likely to be found in early companies and the Coordinator in mature companies. Among the CTOs studied, 10% to 20% do not have a pure technical background, 40% are not involved in product delivery and only 36% had previously served as a CTO in another firm. The data also shows that CTOs would like to be highly collaborative and cross-functional, and desire proximity to the CEO.

Abstract:
This essay will analyse Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations from a conversion narrative perspective. It will show that the journey of the protagonist Pip have resemblances to the journey of Dante in Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. The reason for this is that Great Expectations is an equally clear example of a conversion narrative as The Divine Comedy. Both Pip and Dante meet sinners along their way, but the focus is on how the protagonists deal with their own sins. Pip goes through a typical conversion, where he goes from an avaricious, prodigal and proud person, to a man who values working hard for a sufficient living and being with the ones he love.
