Abstract:
Since the 1980s, British-style brass bands - community ensembles modeled after the all-brass and percussion bands of Great Britain - have enjoyed a modest regeneration in the United States. During this same period, as many as 23 colleges and universities in the U.S. have founded their own curricular or extra-curricular brass band. The purpose of this research study was: to discover which schools sponsor a brass band currently; to discover which schools formerly sponsored a brass band but have since discontinued it; to describe the operational practices of collegiate brass bands in the U.S.; and to determine what collegiate brass band conductors perceive to be the challenges and benefits of brass band in the curriculum. Data for the study were collected between February, 2015 and February, 2016 using four custom survey instruments distributed to conductors of college and university brass bands. The results showed that 11 American collegiate institutions were sponsoring a brass band during the period of data collection. Additional findings included descriptions of the operations of collegiate brass bands, such as availability of credit, rehearsal time, and instrumentation. Results also included the conductors' reported perceptions that both challenges and benefits are inherent in student brass band participation, and that brass band is a positive experience for students. An additional 3 community-based brass bands, not sponsored by but located near a college or university, were found to include collegiate students among their player personnel. A total of 9 schools formerly sponsoring brass bands were found to have discontinued their program. A repertoire analysis of 733 titles of compositions performed by both active and formerly active brass bands revealed that bands performed original works for brass band nearly as often as transcribed or arranged works.

Abstract:
David Baker (b. 1931) is an educator, composer, and jazz legend. He has composed at least fifteen works that include the clarinet. Baker’s Clarinet Sonata (1989) has become a standard of clarinet repertoire and a popular recital inclusion. His chamber work Heritage: A Tribute to Great Clarinetists (1996) interweaves solo transcriptions of five jazz clarinetists. The compositional style of Baker’s clarinet works frequently links jazz and classical idioms. The two works discussed in this document are excellent examples for classically trained musicians who would like to increase their ability and experience in interpreting jazz styles. The purpose of this document is: (1) to provide background, style, and performance considerations for Baker’s Clarinet Sonata and Heritage: A Tribute for Great Clarinetists, for Clarinet, Violin, Piano and Double Bass; (2) based on these style elements, to provide suggestions for interpreting jazz-style works for classically trained clarinetists; and (3) to archive Baker’s published and unpublished clarinet compositions. Appendices include transcripts of interviews with David Baker and other experts in this field (James Campbell, Rosana Eckert, Mike Steinel and Steven Harlos).

Abstract:
This study presents findings on the financial management practices and degrees of conflict of couples in great marriages. Qualitative data from a national sample of couples in great marriages were collected using a 31-page questionnaire. Of the 81 couples who responded, 40 fit the criteria for this study in that they discussed their level of agreement about financial issues in marriage. Their responses were coded to discover which financial topics are pervasive and whether or not couples agreed over these topics. Responses about conflict were also analyzed to determine the degree of agreement between spouses in different categories. Findings from this research suggest that even couples in great marriages disagree over different financial topics to varying degrees of agreement. Implications of the research are also discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the British music scene in the 1960s. Popular music was one of the main manifestations of consumerism and influenced the behavior of most young people. The aim of the thesis is to explain the extent in which popular music played a role in the establishment of a consumer society and, above all, the impact caused by interpreters and music groups on the lifestyle of their listeners and audiences. The thesis also examines how the British music developed in the Sixties and how it was characterized. The thesis is based on the assumption that the 1960s' is a key decade in the postwar history of modern society, a time when fundamental changes occurred in the value systems of most Western societies, notably the British. New generations of young people associated with economic prosperity surfaced at that time, fostering the development of the phenomenon of consumer society, thus changing people's lifestyles. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to economic and social assumptions of the development of the consumer society. The second part of the thesis addresses the social structure of the British society, focusing on the youth - arguably, the social extract that was most appealed by popular music. The core part of the thesis analyses the British music scene in the 1960s, with focus on the music groups and also the music industry and its impal on the lifestyle of youth.

Abstract:
During the 1920s and 1930s dire economic conditions in the Greater Caribbean facilitated the rise of political regimes led by peculiar strongmen. This dissertation offers a comparative analysis on the leadership styles of senator Huey Long from Louisiana and president Gerardo Machado of Cuba, who rose and fell during the interwar period in the broad space of the Greater Caribbean. Long and Machado found similar solutions to analogous problems their respective societies were experiencing. They both favored the development of expensive public works programs and created political discourses aimed at empowering poor farmers. At the same time, and thanks to these policies they were able to accumulate unprecedented power. This comparison enables a better understanding of the shape that politics took in this complicated period in history, and suggests a reassessment of simplistic culturally biased explanations influenced by the idea of American exceptionalism by transcending politically determined frontiers.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the influence of French royal image-making on English monarchies at the turn of the eighteenth century. It investigates the relevance of Louis XIV (r. 1643-1715) to English royal iconography during the reigns of William III (r. 1689-1702) and Queen Anne (r. 1702-1714) across a wide range of source material - from panegyric and portraiture, to medals, sculpture, and architecture. In doing so, it foregrounds the intricate interplay between political communication and different forms of artistic imagination in the early modern period. The thesis conceptualises the relation between post-revolutionary English monarchical image-making and its French counterpart as one of contest with and emancipation from French influence. The specific political circumstances add a particular poignancy to the investigation of this narrative, as the almost continual crises which the English monarchy suffered at the time stand in sharp contrast with the (dynastic) stability of the French monarchy and its highly influential court culture. Despite these elements of rupture and contrast, however, the story of seventeenth-century English monarchical image-making is one of continuity in respect of its gradual disengagement from the French model. In contrast to his immediate predecessors, I contend, William's image-making presents him as Louis's competitor, rather than his imitator. In the course of William's reign, Louis's monarchical model thus turns from model to foil. This development evolves further in Queen Anne's reign, culminating in Louis's mort avant la lettre, as Anne's image-making dispenses with the Ludovican model both as model and as foil. English post-revolutionary image-making, I argue, not only mirrored, but actively contributed to the decline of the Ludovican model, whilst maintaining the figure of the monarch as central to public political discourse. Through the lens of monarchical image-making, therefore, this thesis offers a critical outlook onto late seventeenth-century Anglo-French political and artistic relations.

The present research proposes a corpus-based study of translator’s style, comparing George Kao (Kao Ke-Yi) and Miranda Peng Wang’s Chinese translations of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby has been translated into more than 17 Chinese versions in Taiwan and some of them show profound differences in terms of “style”. The majority of previous studies lay more emphasis on the strategies translators use when translating rather than investigate translation itself as an independent creation. The author of this research hopes to delve into translator’s style through several quantitative measurements. In the past, when corpus techniques and tools have not yet been widely adopted by researchers, qualitative methods are employed. Nowadays, quantitative approaches are available thanks to corpus tools. This study compares Kao’s and Wang’s translations using corpus techniques by compiling a parallel corpus and employing corpus processing and corpus analysis tools. A series of tools, Anymalign, LF Aligner, ICTCLAS 2016, AntConc, Microsoft Excel, Chinese Readability Index Explorer, and CUC_ParaConc, are utilized to measure lexical density, type-token ratio, and average sentence length of each translation. Furthermore, two translations are used as reference corpus for each other to generate keyword lists, which demonstrate the two translators’ styles. This study provides a comprehensive and objective approach to analyze translated texts. It introduces corpus-based methods to address the issue of translator’s style in a way that is otherwise difficult to obtain.

Giacoponi, Liliana. ""Pisa. Solitudine di un impero". La ricezione della cultura medievale nell'opera di Rudolf Borchardt." Doctoral thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2158/1173435.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the ambitious work "Pisa. Ein Versuch" that Rudolf Borchardt composed during the years of the Italian exile and published in 1938. The research aims at returning the significance this writing deserves providing a critical analysis of the peculiar reception of the Middle age and its contemporary culture in Borchardt’s work, focusing on the large philological and historical background underlying the text. The study presents an unavoidable and solid contextualization highlighting the intellectual isolation of the author. Conversations with experts and Professors of the Universities of Florence, Paris Sorbonne, and Bonn enabled establishing the depth of the linguistic, philological, historical and literary knowledge the author deploys in this text, which had not been brought into focus so far. Thanks to a precise archival survey the study has shown the importance of the extraordinary reflection on the Provencal Troubadours that Borchardt carries out by linking their poems to the masterpiece by Giovanni Pisano, hosted in the Duomo of Pisa. The study has thus demonstrated the European profile of Borchardt’s work. The research is divided in six chapters, the first chapter provides both a textual and contextual analysis of a writing Borchardt dedicates to Italian towns, where he strongly identifies the possibility of discovering the true nature of the Italian landscape only at the edge of the incessant modernisation process. The inquiry has highlighted how crucial was for Borchardt the influence of Humboldt’s vision with relation to the definition of natural habitat and human civilization. Furthermore, the research examines all the references Borchardt develops in a network where he associates the Italian architectural style with the Italian life-style, figurative art with poetry and shows to what degree all these aspects of the Italian culture and life are derived from the Imperial Roman society. The connection with the Latin culture conducts the research to examine the impressive work of translating the “Divina Commedia” into a medieval archaic German, language that Borchardt himself created, in order to highlight the alterity of Dante in relation to modern culture. The study reconstructs the genesis of the text “Pisa. Ein Versuch” starting from the essays and the public speeches Borchardt held during the second half of the Twenties, all of which converge on the project of the constitution of a new “Mittelalterliche Altertumswissenschaft”. In specifying the features of this new discipline, the study provides an extensive examination of the influence exercised by Stefan George on the thought and on the poetic sensitivity of Borchardt. The central section of the research outlines and discusses Borchardt vision of Pisa as imperial town, opposing the communal parochialism to a multinational or extranational vision that projects Pisa into the future and towards Europe. At the centre of this idea are the characters of Arnaut Daniel, Giovanni Pisano and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. A suggestive reading made possible a confrontation aimed at opposing the conceptual framework of the imperial Romanitas as inherited by Pisa, to the contemporary fascist vision of the Romanitas whose historical ideal the philologist and cultivated author would never accept. The last section of the study discusses the image of the Middle age that Borchardt proposes in his book, showing that if the influence of George and the George-Kreis is clearly evident, Borchardt’s ideal is much more connected to the notion of medieval Europe as evoked by Novalis. At the same time, however, he marks a break with the external influences, proposing a personal interpretation of the story of Pisa, a town that political events has driven to the margins of history and now takes on personal aspects of the author: Pisa and its “Causa victa” embody the biographical condition of the author, evidencing the human drama of Borchardt both as an intellectual and as a man in his more and more sorrowful loneliness, until death took him during the deportation towards Germany.

The so-called Four Great Master - Huang Kung-wang, Ni Tsan, Wang Meng and Wu Chen - are the representative artists of the Chinese literati painting of Yuan Dynasty. Huang Kung-wang’s ashy and bushy landscapes appear to be boundless, indistinct yet beautiful and in leisure, with free and easy pen and ink. His works had achieved a state of noble and refined appreciation of nature. The essence of Wu Chen's landscape is simplicity. His brush stroke is vigorous in round motions, with facile ink and water spreading, producing a rich and thick ambience. Ni Tsan’s brush work is sketchily and spontaneous, with expansive and elegant composition. His masterpieces exhibit a world of simplicity, leisure and desolation. Wang Meng prefers to use solid, dense brush strokes and dots. His composition is rich yet ordered with room and figures. His style demonstrated a sense of profoundness, concentration in fullness. Their works followed the traditional line of Chinese culture in history, developed under Mongols rule. The four masters' styles exhibit unique personal flavors due to different background, teaching and understanding of the art.

Prill, Thorsten. "Mission at the exit ramps of the refugee highway in an age of globalisation: integrating refugees and asylum seekers into the Christian community in the United Kingdom." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2031.

Full text
Abstract:
In the face of globalisation, one of the challenges for Christians ministering to asylum seekers and refugees in the United Kingdom is the question of integrating Christian asylum seekers and refugees into the Christian community. British churches and para-church organisations that are involved in refugee ministry have to decide whether they want to support the formation of independent refugee churches or the integration of refugees and asylum seekers into local indigenous churches. This thesis examines these options from a missiological perspective. Two social research projects form the heart of this study. One compares the life and ministry of two mature minority ethnic churches, the other investigates the integration process at a British church that has been involved in refugee ministry for almost a decade. Contrary to the widespread view that the establishment of homogeneous churches is crucial for the mission of the church in postmodern British society, the findings of this research suggest that the integration of asylum seekers and refugees into indigenous British churches is the better option. They further demonstrate that it is not the mono-ethnic refugee church but the multi-ethnic church which makes the greater contribution to the integration of Christian asylum seekers and refugees and to the missio Dei in Britain. In a multi-ethnic church, asylum seekers and refugees serve as role models to British Christians and especially as effective agents of mission. These research findings also show that the integration of asylum seekers and refugees is promoted through the congregation within the congregation model and an incarnational approach to mission. However, they equally indicate that various stumbling blocks can hinder the integration process. These include a low ecclesiology, a conversionist approach to mission, a lack of awareness of globalisation, and a reactive leadership style and church culture.
