Saw, Yadana Josephine. "Frodo is grea... who is that?!?: the production and consumption of an online celebrity parody." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Sociology and Anthropology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1745.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis analyses the phenomenon of Figwit, a non-speaking elf extra who appeared for only three-seconds in the first instalment of Peter Jackson's 2001 Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Figwit was initially generated as an online parody by female fans of the movie and as a foil to the 'swooning, drooling girly' fandom that was being directed towards the movie's star actors. However, Figwit evolved into a bona fide, albeit minor, celebrity both on and offline as he attracted attention from worldwide media, a small speaking role in the final movie and genuine adulatory fandom as manifested in the production of Figwit merchandise. In my thesis I argue that Figwit's creation and consequential community formation reflects a dynamic online-offline dialogic in which pre-existing offline and habitus-generated social practices and distinctions, ideal reflexive individuality and celebrity/fandom were dynamically reproduced within online technological frameworks. I also argue that online activity and interactivity is generated by users to strategically express and engage intensified reflexive individuality, affirming sociability and hyper-social distinctions. In this regard I have also argued that these various potentials and imaginaries were significantly enabled by digital architectures and genres of online communication and interactivity. In particular, I discuss the internet's capacity for searchability, traceability, and rhetorical framing processes that facilitate continuous re-editing authorship possibilities, which are not necessarily replicable in face-to-face interactions. Finally, I argue that reflexive online interactivity and identity expressions may transform into online and offline consequences that may be constructive, divergent or even contradictory. The arguments put forward in this thesis are based on a multi-sited ethnography, which utilises a variety of methodologies including participant-observation, subject interviews, communications and media archiving and analysis, and it draws from a variety of sources both online and offline.

Abstract:
This work explores the fragility of the Great Lakes and the environmental degradation we have caused. My main focus revolves around what the EPA considers to be the Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs). This list contains 27 rivers that flow into the Great Lakes, most of which are or have been areas of industrial and chemical pollution. Through installations involving photography, ceramics, and video, I hope to reveal the issues facing the Great Lakes and explore how people can help.

Moretti, Angela. "Aristobulo di Cassandrea." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3423404.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns Aristobulus of Cassandrea, a historian of Alexander the Great, who followed the Macedonian king during his expedition in Asia and wrote a book about these events. This work is lost. At the beginning of this study there is the corpus of Aristobulus’ fragments edited by Felix Jacoby in his Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker (Leiden 1927). The few biographical information about the historian has been collected and discussed in the first part of our work, where we analyze the 6 testimonia about Aristobulus’ life. Then, we discuss the 62 fragments from the work concerning Alexander the Great, and the 2 spurious, which are not Aristobulus’. Of each fragment we present: an Italian translation, an analysis of major textual problems and a commentary, in which the Aristobulus’ text is compared with the most important ancient sources on Alexander. In the final chapter, we develop an analysis of all the fragments, in order to reconstruct the characteristics of the work of the historian.

Abstract:
This paper presents my master project “Grey Flowers” which is an incarnation of a poetic metaphor to a ceramic flower sculpture. The project is an installation of crafted flowers as a strong symbol of a short lived moment which has now stopped for ages. This sculptural work is based on the notion of decadence of the 19th century and presents a new way which it can been interpreted. Ceramics, clay and firing processes are used as a methods of unpredictability and a “happy accident”. The main aim of the project is to create a feeling of abandonment by showing decaying and dying beauty. The sculptural work investigates the different aspects of the flower and its representation trying to show different approaches tothinking and working while telling about the same idea.

Abstract:
GREY SLATE is a collection of poems that focuses on the natural world in order to explore the mysteries of life with the intent to create a meditation on what it means to be a human being interacting with this world. Inspired by John Keats’ theory of Negative Capability, GREY SLATE does not seek to explain, but to dwell in the mysteries it explores. The poems are tied together through similar images or ideas in order to mimic the way the mind works as it jumps from thought to thought. GREY SLATE also mixes different types of poems: from haiku to sonnet to paradelle, and from lyric to narrative to prose poem. GREY SLATE hopes to inspire readers to take a break from searching for truths and indulge in the beautiful mystery that is life with no need for answers.

Great Emergencies is a stage play about the lavish dangers of The Gilded Age, but ultimately a cautionary tale about those of us whose voices are doomed to be forgotten because of the ephemeral and apathetic nature of human history.

Abstract:
Background: Corporate Responsibility is not a new concept however in recent times more companies are starting to use different kinds of responsibility disclosures. These disclosures are voluntary and corporations may use them in the way they find suits them best. There is a lot of research in this field and there is no single explanation for what Corporate Responsibility is and how corporations should relate to it. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the controlling owners of corporations and CSR disclosure. Method: We use a content analysis and a survey study to examine the relationship between corporate controlling owners and the CSR disclosure. Conclusions: Our results show that controlling owners have little effect on the different dimensions of CSR disclosure. We have however found some differences between the different owner categories where some categories are found to use CSR disclosure to a greater extent.

Abstract:
This thesis project is a study of a complex of historic, railway-goods warehouses in Nottingham (UK) that were internally destroyed by a fire two decades ago. The site has has become an erstwhile symbol of the city, a stark reminder of both a past age of prosperity and the century of post-industrial decline that ultimately followed. Now facing the threat of demolition, it is questioned whether it is possible to rescue the intrinsic potential of these ruins to radically transport us beyond the experience of the everyday city, to a unique and inhabitable space of transition between past and present. This thesis also examins the changing role of the library in the 21st century and the future for this public institution as a vestibule for the transmission of local culture and history. This leads to the central question of the thesis project; is it possible - through the appropriate treatment of an industrial ruin - to begin a process of reconciliation with the past, one that can provide some kind closure to the cognitive dissidence caused by language and tone of this kind of architectural heritage and the limited prospects that city like Nottingham faces today.

The Vision Slaved to Walking Device i s one in a series of devices that are a result of the experimental ambulation series. The ability to see only when one's feet are moving allows for a distorted perspective of ones own perceptual world as well as the outside environment . The device is made up of precision electronic shutter systems, controllers, and foot switches. The larger goal of this and other projects in the experimental ambulation series is to re-establish connections with my perceptive systems to the outside world in order to remove my personal sensibility of numbness that I feel. experimental ambulation represents a series of attempts at distorting , altering, manipulating, and reshaping sensation and perception while walking. Each attempt has lead a following attempt applying information gained in order to further involve the next walking experiment . Often the stranger is someone who walks, both out of necessity and desire. With this in mind I engage the realm of the urban ambulatory environment. It is during this state , this state of not running and not standing still, that provides for fertile territory for the observation , re - arrangement , and re - formulation of difference aspects of the city. The desire to interact with the ground plane, with the city, with walking in non-traditional manners has necessitated the need for different strategies . Part performative, part fabrication , part documentation, and part social scientist these modes of operation are driven out of a desire to subvert and reexamine the world around me.

Abstract:
The Great Schism was a period in European history between 1378 and 1417 during which two and sometimes three people claimed to be the legitimate pope. The Great Schism began after several cardinals argued that the election of Pope Urban VI in 1378 had been coerced by a hostile mob in Rome. The cardinals subsequently elected a different, competing pope, Clement VII. Different rulers in Europe supported one of the two popes, usually due to political expediency more than religious sentiment or legal arguments. The Great Schism eventually ended with the election of a single pope, Martin V, in 1417; however, the power of the papacy was dealt an irrevocable blow.

Abstract:
The word-order in Greek only enjoys apparent freedom and must be analyzed as a linguistic feature and not as an exercise in style. Starting from a corpus of forty-two extracts that reflect as faithfullyas possible the spoken language, and ininterruptedly spanning twentyfive centuries, we have studied the place of the determiner in the genitive, of the object personal pronouns, of the subject (more accurately of its "epitaxis") and of the adjectives. From this analogical and contrastive study have emerged trends of evolution in the word-order as well as landmarks in chronology. Throughout the centuries, the polymorphism of ancient greek has evolved and becomed selective. Thus the Greek language has selected, rejected and retained, recently adopting a less flexible word-order, in which usage has eventually become the norm. A more comprehensive corpus and additional analyses would undoubtedly enable us to strengthen the scientific assessment that has already been achieved and to promote studies in greek diachronic syntax

The aim of the study is to get an understanding of how Greta Thunberg was represented in the Swedish newspapers (Dagens Nyheter & Aftonbladet), what characteristic features that was given to her and the values used about her. The framing of questions is: How is the representation of Greta Thunberg in Swedish newspapers? What values can be seen in the text? What characteristic features are given to Greta Thunberg? The  representation theory of Stuart Hall  and Vlademir Propp's design features was used and qualitative content analysis for helping discover these things. The Study found that Greta Thunberg has been represented in both a positive and a negative way in the chosen written media. She is stereotyped and has been given more characteristic features than this study has chosen to focus on.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a working methodology to color a grey scale image. This thesis is based on approach of using a colored reference image. Coloring grey scale images has no exact solution till date and all available methods are based on approximation. This technique of using a color reference image for approximating color information in grey scale image is among most modern techniques.Method developed here in this paper is better than existing methods of approximation of color information addition in grey scale images in brightness, sharpness, color shade gradients and distribution of colors over objects.Color and grey scale images are analyzed for statistical and textural features. This analysis is done only on basis of luminance value in images. These features are then segmented and segments of color and grey scale images are mapped on basis of distances of segments from origin. Then chromatic values are transferred between these matched segments from color image to grey scale image.Technique proposed in this paper uses better mechanism of mapping clusters and mapping colors between segments, resulting in notable improvement in existing techniques in this category.

Winward, Gideon Paul. "Disinfection of grey water." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2007. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/2894.

Full text
Abstract:
The reuse of grey water, for applications such as toilet flushing and irrigation, represents a potential sustainable solution to water shortages experienced by regions worldwide. Although reused grey water is not intended for potable use, the potential for transmission of waterborne pathogens by aerosol inhalation, topical contact, or indirect ingestion is a key concern for grey water reuse. This thesis explores the pathogen content of grey water and investigates pathogen removal through treatment and disinfection processes. The impacts of organic and particulate material in grey water on the efficacy of disinfection processes are investigated in depth. Grey water can potentially harbour a range of pathogenic microorganisms, with opportunistic bacterial pathogens in grey water indicating a particular risk of grey water reuse for the vulnerable members of society. The disinfection of grey water is therefore critical prior to reuse. Particulate material in grey water limits the efficacy of disinfection by chlorine, ultraviolet light, and origanum essential oil, by shielding microorganisms from the applied disinfectant. Microbial resistance to the disinfectants was linked to the particle size distribution of the grey water, with increasing particle size offering greater protection to associated microorganisms. Additional organic material was shown to reduce the applied disinfectant but no impact on microorganism resistance to disinfection was observed when a constant disinfectant dose was maintained. Treatment of grey water, targeting the removal of large particulate material, improves the efficacy of grey water disinfection, allowing compliance with stringent microbiological standards for urban water reuse.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper identifies America's first Great Moderation, a period from 1841-1856 of unbroken economic expansion and low volatility comparable to the Great Moderation of the 1980s-2000s. This moderation occurred despite a lack of central banks, low governmental spending, and barriers to interstate commerce during the antebellum period. I demonstrate this moderation in industrial production and stock market indexes and compare the first Great Moderation with the second in these economic factors. These results also call into question the conventional wisdom of the National Bureau of Economic Research business cycle chronology that the antebellum period was volatile and fraught with recessions. I then identify several possible causes of this stable growth in the effects of cotton prices, technological revolutions such as railroads, and wage and interest rate integration during the period, among other factors. Understanding these factors helps develop our understanding of the American antebellum economy and the causes of economic growth and stability, especially during these Great Moderations.

How does one explore the suburban home? Go in through the garage, of course. Sales, bands, suicides, and business startups: The suburban garage is the most culturally flexible space in the entire American domestic environment. In this flexibility, it stands opposed to many of the established notions of suburban domestic context. It is illustrative of the displayed, hidden, and forgotten wonders of the American home. Within the context of this thesis, established interpretations of the garage program are used in the form of metaphor and hyperbole to create differing typologies of the American home. The metaphors themselves have developed out of a very dense genealogy of American suburban histories and trajectories. They have a real history, just as they occupy a very real extant condition of the suburban context. The new suburban house typologies march toward the space of the surreal via the narratives that accompany each of them, allowing for an exploration into the existing domestic condition as well as a feverish and jocular critique of some of the norms of suburban life. The attempt of the research is to take on the exploration of American suburbia, using the very stereotypes and cliches that have come to define it.

Abstract:
The Chinese household appliance manufacturing industry has made remarkable achievements in the world with its low labor cost, perfect supporting industrial cluster and scale economy, and laid the position of "big country of home appliance manufacturing industry". With China's accession to the world trade organization, the world trade organization's principles of equality, reciprocity and openness, as well as the influence of the wave of globalization, provide a good opportunity for China's home appliance manufacturing industry to implement the global strategy and participate in the global market competition. Value assessment not only helps enterprises understand themselves, but also helps investors make investment decisions. Because the country's financial system is not sound, the investment channel is limited, a large amount of capital is backlog into the stock market, and many stock prices deviate from the actual value, so the evaluation of enterprise value becomes more and more important. This project analyzes the financial condition and company value of GREE electric appliances, and puts forward constructive suggestions accordingly.

Abstract:
Theatre in Ancient Greece developed into four dramatic genres: tragedy, comedy, satyrical drama and mime. Mime is the comic genre which was born in Dorian Greece, developed in Sicily and which development continues until the Hellenistic period. Although it is an important part of the ancient Greece dramatic art, up to now there was no systematic research on this type of theatre. This study aims at exploring that unknown dramatic genre. Its main objectives is the search for its origins, historical evolution and relationship (similarities and differences) with the other genres of dramatic art, as well as for its major creators

Abstract:
The People’s Republic of China has increasingly been asserting its role as a responsible power in international affairs, emphasizing its engagement in and contribution to UN peacekeeping missions and its key role as a veto-yielding Security Council member. This thesis investigates that while China continues to champion a strong conception of state sovereignty in interstate relations, it has signaled a shift from an ideological insistence on non-interference toward a more pragmatic approach to humanitarian crises. This paper demonstrates how after 2005 China has managed to position itself in a ‘grey zone’ of uncertainty, that is to say that China’s dilemma is wanting to appear responsible on the international level but also wanting to adhere to safe principles such as non-interference and sovereignty. Therefore, it is my argument that China will never fully endorse R2P or any alternative norm that will justify foreign intervention in a sovereign state. While China continues to show support for alternative formulas for civilian protection, such as the Brazilian ‘Responsibility while Protecting’ (RwP), as well as develop its own version of R2P, ie. ‘Responsible Protection’ (RP), it is not to turn “words into deeds” but rather to keep up with appearances. China’s current position on responding to humanitarian crises is ambiguous. The principles behind RP represent a very useful conceptual approach to the issue of humanitarian protection, but the probability of implementing them is virtually non-existent. RP indicates that China has been more responsive to external criticisms in recent years, but does not fundamentally help to discern where China stands on responding to humanitarian crises. Because of RP’s tight criteria, China ensures that in practice no intervention can ever fully be justified, while appearing to advance more ‘responsible’ approaches to civilian protection as its great-power status and privileged position as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council permit it to do so.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This study argues that after World War I, corporate executives continued a strategy of perception management (PM) to control Americans’ choices in the commercial sphere and to shape the economic and cultural landscape of the 1920s. The state used PM on an unprecedented scale in 1917 and 1918 to promote a model of loyal American behavior (as part its effort to manage the mobilized U.S. society), but the use of PM did not end after the Armistice. While many historians have seen wartime propaganda measures as the result of special fears and circumstances tied to a sense of pervasive national emergency, they fail to explain the continuation of comparable methods into the period of peace supposedly characterized by a return to "normalcy." Whereas most historical studies sharply delineate between political propaganda and commercial advertising, this study stresses leaders' continuous use of PM to promote their notions of what constituted typical, normal, even loyal American behavior in times of both war and peace. While not a contemporary term in the early twentieth century, PM offers an appropriate conceptual framework to analyze a deliberate strategy at that time. This study defines it as actions used to convey or deny selected information to audiences to influence their emotions, motives, and objective reasoning, resulting in behaviors and actions favorable to the originators’ objectives. During WWI, policymakers and bureaucrats concealed the state's effort to control people's behavior with claims of defending liberty and democracy. After the war, corporate executives used PM to manufacture consumer demand and encourage Americans to think of themselves foremost as consumers. A cross section of political, economic, and cultural history, Perception Management in the United States from the Great War to the Great Crash offers an original perspective that emphasizes the consistency between the wartime and postwar eras by highlighting leaders' ongoing use of perception management to control Americans' behavior.

Abstract:
Through an examination of the processes and influences on the character of grey literature and its producers, this thesis explores the nature of archaeological investigation, how it is reported and the creation of archaeological data in England from 1990 to 2010 and the implications for future understanding of the English archaeological record. I intend to address broad research questions regarding grey literature and archaeology: What is grey literature? Who creates it and why? What is it meant for? Is it fit-for-purpose? My research objectives in studying grey literature reporting and archaeological fieldwork investigation in England are: •To explore the nature of archaeological grey literature reporting and its producers, the framework of its production and communication, and its impact on archaeological research and knowledge production; •To capture the developments and changes in English archaeological practice between 1990 and 2010 and their implications for the creation and understanding of the archaeological record; and •To consider potential future directions for archaeological fieldwork and reporting. I propose to achieve this using a combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches including spatial analysis techniques, comparative analysis at a range of scales from England-wide to individual case study areas, and detailed analysis of the nature and actual content of grey literature reports alongside a characterisation of the many creators of grey literature reporting. This study will illustrate and explore the process of producing grey literature reporting as well as examining the end product itself - grey literature reports. This European Research Council funded DPhil research was undertaken within the context of the English Landscapes and Identities Project, which analyses change and continuity in the English Landscape from the middle Bronze Age (c.1500 BC) to the Domesday survey (c. Abstract:

Wong, Wendy H. W. "Paul Wittgenstein in Great Britain." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/33743/.

Full text
Abstract:
Most of the existing research on Paul Wittgenstein (1887–1961) focuses on his performing career in central Europe as a left-hand pianist and his commissions from the most prominent composers of the 20th century such as Richard Strauss and Maurice Ravel, and his favourite composer, Franz Schmidt. His British performing career and the compositions Ernest Walker, Norman Demuth and Benjamin Britten composed for and dedicated to him, however, remain relatively unexplored. By examining a variety of primary sources that are disclosed here for the first time, this thesis offers the first scholarly research into Wittgenstein’s performing activities in Great Britain in the 1920s–50s and his British commissions in order to fill a major research gap in Wittgenstein studies. Chapter 1 explores Wittgenstein’s self-recognition as a member of the Viennese aristocracy and the shaping of his musical identity, conception and taste, followed by an overview of the related primary sources that are currently located in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, a detailed summary of his performing activities in Great Britain and a discussion of the British reception of him as a left-hand pianist. Chapter 2 focuses on Walker and the three compositions he wrote for piano left-hand, two of which he composed before meeting Wittgenstein and one after, and the pianist’s attitude towards them. Chapter 3 brings to light the much-neglected composer Demuth and the two works he composed for Wittgenstein and discusses possible reasons why the pianist never performed them. Chapter 4 examines Wittgenstein’s first and only official British commission, the Diversions, Op. 21 by Britten, and investigates the interaction between composer and pianist in the compositional process and their differing conceptions of the work.

Kyriakou, Tania. "EU constitutionalism : the great simulator?" Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24799.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a normative critique of EU constitutionalism. Its aim is not to expose the flaws of EU constitutionalism by reference to the templates of the nation state and our inherited constitutional vocabularies, but to articulate an internal, immanent critique, which brings to the fore the internal contradictions of the EU constitutional order. The argument put forward in this thesis shows that the initial solely economic focus of the Community has influenced its gradual evolution into a political entity and has kept its current political character subordinated to economic definitions. Due to the specific conditions of its historical development (the process through which the EC Treaty was constitutionalised was to a large extent judicially driven), EU constitutionalism has been marked by a substitution of jurisdiction for politicisation. Furthermore, the legal outcome of this juridification has enshrined the exigencies of the market within its deepest structures (this will be shown through an analysis of the concept of EU fundamental rights). This double substitution of the legal for the political and the economic for the legal amounts to a simulation of the political; political power is in essence no longer present except to conceal that there are no effective mechanisms for the exercise of political power in the EU. At the same time, this simulation of the political functions in a deeply ideological way, because it renders invisible the existing structures of political economy and the asymmetrical relations of domination which have been established through them.
