Ruehl, Hannah T. "UNDERSTANDING THE GRAY: AGING WOMEN IN VICTORIAN CULTURE AND FICTION." UKnowledge, 2018. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/english_etds/80.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation, Understanding the Gray:Aging Women in Victorian Culture and Fiction, explores the cultural construction of aging for middle-class Victorian women and how aging was experienced and then depicted within novels. Chiefly, I work from midcentury to the end of the century in order to understand the experience of aging and ways women were ascribed age due to their position in society as spinsters, mothers, and progressive women. I explore how the age of fictional women reflects and contributes to critical debates concerning how Victorian women were expected to behave. Debates over separate spheres, how women were perceived in British society, and how women’s rights changed during the 19th century highlight how aging affected women and how they were treated throughout the century. Victorian fiction illustrates the ways women achieved different roles in society and how age and the perception of age affected their ability to do so. Understanding how aging was experienced, understood, and ascribed to Victorian women who fought in various ways for new terms of citizenship and mobility helps us begin to trace how we treat and respond to aging in women today. The first chapter outlines the social status of unmarried women and spinsters, considering how age affected women’s ability to lead professional lives in Charlotte Brontë’s Villette (1853). The second chapter, on George Eliot’s Felix Holt: The Radical, explores older motherhood through Mrs Transome and illustrates how the novel seeks to teach younger women of the pitfalls of unequal marriages. The third chapter builds a cultural understanding of how aging was linked to progressive, anti-domestic womanhood and racial impurity through the New Woman and in H.R. Haggard’s She.

This research entitled: “The decadentist crossborders of Dracula and The Picture of Dorian Gray” presents an analysis on the intrinsic relationship between Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), and Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), aiming at showing how the novel Dracula, considered an example of Victorian Gothic Literature, can be read as a representative of English Decadentism due to the dialogue established with The Picture of Dorian Gray. This dialogue can be seen through the acceptance of the faustic pact, an action that promotes situations similar to the ones created by the artificial experimentations engendered by Decadentism, since that decadent beings act attracted by sadistic and diabolic incursions (LEVIN, 1996, p.36). Thus, the intensification of the cult to the body as a mechanism to the fulfillment of art and pleasure in the universe of sensations promotes the corporeal learning of absolute knowledge as it happened to Faust. The artificialization of the decadent and vampiric body in search of sensations is fulfilled by the corporeal fluids: blood and sêmen. Liquids that possess useful functions in society. However, these valuable elements in decadent hands become instruments of joy. Thus, blood and sêmen can be propagator of life and death. Therefore they are fluids that become instruments to the joy of the monster, promoting in this way, the discovery of a new artificial universe of experiences. Thus, this research aims at proving through the decadent aesthetics, the reminiscences of the aesthete Dorian Gray in Stokers’s vampire, a supernatural vampire that artificializes his/her body, transforming it in a locus of art and pleasure.

Abstract:
This essay aims to examine how immortality and immoral behavior are represented in The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. The claim in this essay is that an immortal life is not a desirable life and that it traps you in a paradoxical existence that cannot be desirable. The method used in this essay is close reading of the narrative focusing on the protagonist Dorian Gray examined through two theories, ‘The Makropulos case’ and the subsequent analysis regarding contingent and categorical desires introduced by Bernard Williams as well as a theory focusing on endless frustration by Aaron Smuts that evolved through critiquing Williams’ theory on contingent and categorical desires. By analyzing Dorian Gray’s behavior and comparing his choices to the theories presented by Williams and Smuts the results are unanimous and support the claim that an immortal life is undesirable. Dorian Gray ended up confined to a life without meaning as he left everything that held meaning to him behind in his pursuit of pleasure and youth.

Whiteford, Eilidh MacLeod. "Political histories, politicised spaces : discourses of power in the fiction of Alasdair Gray." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1997. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2054/.

Full text
Abstract:
Critical assessments of Alasdair Gray's work make frequent mention of his postmodern literary strategies and his active engagement with political issues. However, Gray himself is quick to refute claims that he is a postmodern writer, and, although his books are often described as 'political', detailed attention has yet to be paid to the kind of politics Gray espouses. By examining key ideological strands in a range of Alasdair Gray's prose writings (including texts that have attracted little critical interest) and by exploring their central, sometimes unresolved, tensions, this thesis investigates the relationship between literary and political discourses in Gray's work. Attempting to chart the range and extent of Gray's engagement with contemporary issues of political and cultural debate, the five chapters of the thesis demonstrate that Gray's literary techniques are intimately connected to his thematic and political concerns. The thesis draws on a range of critical approaches to address Gray's work, using aspects of post-structuralist, feminist, and postcolonial theories. The first chapter examines autobiographical and semi-autobiographical texts by Gray, opening discussion about his approaches to narrative construction and historiography. It argues that Gray's texts draw attention to their own narrative paradigms and underlying ideological assumptions, and suggests that Gray's destabilization of conventional Western epistemological frameworks unsettles empirical conceptions of human subjectivity and identity, challenging the terms in which personal and national identities can be secured. The discussion of Gray's self-conscious destabilization of categories of identity underlies the questions raised in subsequent chapters. The second chapter highlights Gray's treatment of the hegemonic discourses of imperialism and capitalism. Focusing on his polemical essays and short fiction; the chapter examines the role of literature in imperial processes, the complexities of Scotland's position within imperial discourses, and explores questions of cultural agency and resistance.

Davidson, Amanda Anne. "Uncertainty in Postmodern literature : with special reference to the novels of Alasdair Gray and Salman Rushdie." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 1999. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/28820.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a selective study of Postmodern literature, focusing on the work of Alasdair Gray and Salman Rushdie. Postmodern literature is an expression of and response to the profound uncertainty that characterises the late-twentieth century. The works of many diverse authors attempt to come to terms with the Postmodern situation, which Jürgen Habermas has described as `the legitimation crisis'. The Enlightenment metanarratives that legitimise Western, industrial societies, have been undermined by Capitalism and events. We no longer accept general metanarratives and this generates profound uncertainty. As Postmodern literature challenges the incomplete certainties of grandnarratives, such as religious and political ideologies, it adopts uncertain forms. Texts create series of debates because these dramatise our conflicting uncertainties and our reluctance to accept, set positions, and answers that erroneously claim to be universal and absolute. By presenting issues in conflict without offering a set conclusion, fiction is able to bring its readers actively into the arguments and find a role for itself within society. The uncertainty of the present has contributed to an impression that we have lost a sense of connection with the past and future and therefore continuous identity. Postmodern novels tend to concentrate upon the struggles of the present in order to free the future from both restrictive traditional visions and the paralysing present. The future finally emerges as the direct product of the past and present, but we can also begin to imagine it as something radically different. Postmodern literature does not create new metanarratives, it legitimises a tense and provisional relationship with society that helps peoples to live in an uncertain world while not surrendering to it.

Abstract:
This thesis develops a critical vocabulary for dealing with the visual appearance of prose fiction where it is manipulated for effect by authors. It explores why literary criticism and theory has dismissed such features as either unreadable experimental gimmicks or, more recently, as examples of the worst kind of postmodernist decadence. Through the examination of three problematical texts (B.S. Johnson's Albert Angelo, Christine Brooke-Rose's Thru and Alasdair Gray's Lanark: a Life in Four Books), the thesis demonstrates that an awareness of the graphic surface can make significant contributions to interpretation particularly around the issues of representation in fiction and our understanding of the reading process in general. There are four large chapters divided into sections. Chapter One sets out to demonstrate both how and why the graphic surface has been neglected; the first section looks at the visual perception of graphic surface and at how that perception may be obscured by other concerns or automatised until unnoticed. Section two looks at theoretical obstacles to the perception of the graphic surface, particularly those which see printed text as either an idealised sign-system or a representation of spoken language. Section three moves on to examine how 'blindness' to the graphic surface, and particularly to its potential mimetic usage, is reflected and perpetuated in literary criticism. Section four examines critical assumptions about the transformation of manuscript to novel, and what our familiarity with the printed form of the book leads us to take for granted. Section five discusses our choice of texts and their specific authorial and critical backgrounds. Chapters Two, Three and Four deal with the three chosen texts (listed above) individually and in detail, before a concluding summary which touches on some of the implications of the project.

Bex, Anthony R. "The moral self in eighteenth-century poetry : a study in the poetics of Gray, Goldsmith, Cowper and Yearsley." Thesis, University of Kent, 2014. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/47607/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores one aspect of the ‘inward turn’ that is a significant feature of English poetry in the later eighteenth century. It claims that a representative group of poets construct an authorial ‘self’ in which the personal pronoun ‘I’ becomes an authoritative guarantor of social and moral judgements. It suggests that this move was a response to Lockeian ideas of personal identity and economic individualism which were subsequently refined and developed by theoreticians such as David Hume and Adam Smith such that the ‘self’ was conceived not merely as the site of the sensorium but also the site of moral judgement. It identifies Thomas Gray as the initiator of this development, arguing that his earlier poems, and particularly his Elegy, were revolutionary in their attempts to accommodate Locke’s ideas as a means of combating both the fissiparous nature of the literary market place and the hegemonic practices of the aristocratic class. The reception of the Elegy led Gray to believe he had failed, but his construction of the ‘swain’s’ dual identity who both judges and is judged was to resonate in the persona of Goldsmith’s narrator of The Deserted Village. Goldsmith’s essentially conservative outlook meant that this poem was fractured and it was not until Cowper’s The Task that a fully coherent realisation of Gray’s poetics was achieved. The thesis finally considers Ann Yearsley’s work, arguing that her construction of a ‘self’ as narrator and social judge was fraught with difficulty both because of her position as a female labouring-class poet, and because of the repressive response to the French Revolution. The concluding chapter draws together the implications of the preceding chapters.

Thomas, Michael Joseph. "Missing The Curfew: A Cultural History Case For Re-Reading Thomas Gray's Most Famous Line." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2016. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/590.

Full text
Abstract:
Virtually all nineteenth and twentieth century accounts of Thomas Gray's 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard' find in the Curfew bell of the opening lines primarily a figure of death evoked by the growing darkness, the fading sounds, the emptying landscape and ultimate solitude of the speaker, and most of all the funerary associations of tolling bells and the 'passing bell' tradition. And yet, culturally, despite some symbolic overlap, the Curfew bell and the passing bell are quite distinct, each with its own characteristic history, practices, traditions, and connotations, distinctions recognized widely in eighteenth century literary and antiquarian circles. In this thesis, I explore the literary historical question of why so many readers, popular and scholarly, of the 'Elegy' have avoided the overt political implications of these Curfew traditions in favor of the more allusive funerary associations. I develop an argument grounded in both literary tradition and cultural history for taking Gray's famous Curfew seriously as a literal Curfew bell, rather than as merely a symbolic passing bell or funeral bell. The result is a view of the 'Elegy' as engaging with class on a more fundamental level than usually assumed, both anticipating and informing the language of political economic discourse in the latter half of the eighteenth century, suggesting that whether we take the poem most fundamentally as a moral meditation on the ultimate universality of death or as a more socio-political reflection on the disparities of class depends greatly on how we hear this tolling bell.

Abstract:
My aim with this study has been to examine how the fashion is a leading component in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. I have studied the role fashion plays in the novel and in which way it can be seen as a way of letting the reader know the important role of fashion in 19tcentury England and the morals of Oscar Wilde. To prove my thesis I have used literature that shows how Oscar Wilde uses influences from his own life in his writing of The Picture of Dorian Gray. I have also used Judith Butler's theory of performativity in analyzing the characters in ordet to display their way of staging themselves and their lifestyles and their dependence of that performativity in their interactions. Even though the theory of performativity often is used to hold the importance of the sexes, I have concluded that it has an important role in the novel when Dorian Gray interacts with the character Sibyl Vane who is an actress. My results have shown that fashion in the novel is often a way of letting the reader know important elements of a character in the way that certain fabrics and items are mentioned when Wilde writes about his characters. I have also found that fashion is an important factor when the characters judge each when they speak about the way they dress. The way fashion is presented in the novel is important to my thesis and has shown me how fashion can be used in literature as symbolic elements guiding the narrative. Abstract:
This is a critical reading of Lanark: a Life in Four Books, a novel by the Scottish writer Alasdair Gray (b. 1934), whose talent and style provide a fitting example of Scotland’s contemporary literature. The aim of this investigation is to determine the role played by Gray’s production in the literary, cultural and sociopolitical spheres of present-day Scottish life. In his blending of fiction and metafiction, of art and autobiography, the author faces the paradoxes involved in the attempt to stress the marks of a national identity. Gray’s work cannot be considered without recognizing that his literature is both local and universal. It belongs to the Scottish cosmos which is highlighted by cultural struggles as well as it is dominant, once it is carried out in English reaching readers all over the world from within the limits and format determined by the English Language. That is one of the reasons why this research aims to shed light on the current Scottish literary scene, attempting to fill an existing gap in the Brazilian academic curriculum respecting the treatment and approach of Literatures produced in English in our undergraduate and graduate courses. The dissertation is divided into three parts. The first contextualizes Gray in Scotland’s literature in its relation to the formation, ratification and revaluation of the concept of a sense of national identity as observed diachronically, throughout the period between 1940s and 1970s. The second section focuses on the new looks at Scotland’s cultural scenario by a distinguished group of writers burst with style, history and post-devolution vision, the New Scottish Writers. Gray’s strategies to deal with a fictional and biographical context in Lanark and his reflection upon world’s nature and worth are of great importance for this work. By the reading of Linda Hutcheon’s understanding on historiographic metafiction, intertextuality, parody and irony in postmodernism, I attempt to frame in Chapter Three the literary maneuvers Gray makes in using such textual resources in his novel. I hope that the result of this doctoral thesis may be useful both as a reflection upon the present state of the discussion about Scotland’s postmodern literature, and as a means of making the Brazilian academic readers more familiar with the work of Alasdair Gray.

Carlsson, Stephanie Lillian. "Herman charles Bosman : the biographer's enigma." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/79713.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the five biographies or memoirs written about the renowned South African writer Herman Charles Bosman. The main aim of the study is to show how different, and often contradictory, the views of him are as presented in the biographies. I also investigate different theories of biography as expounded by Leon Edel, Ira Bruce Nadel and Ray Monk and explore to what extent each of the biographies conforms, or does not conform to the theory. It is the contention of this dissertation that though the existing theories are useful and do shed light on each biographer’s approach and practice, they are also limited in accounting fully for the diverse and often discrepant accounts of Bosman’s life. The dissertation opens with an explication of several different theories regarding biography, and gives a brief overview of the life story of Herman Charles Bosman. Some of the main elements of biography (including different forms of narration, language and myth) are discussed and how they might be used in biography. The subsequent chapters focus on and offers detailed analyses of the biographies of Bosman, beginning with Herman Bosman As I Knew Him by Bernard Sachs and My Friend Herman Charles Bosman by Aegidius Jean Blignaut. Thereafter Sunflower to the Sun by Valerie Rosenberg and Life Sentence by Stephen Gray are analysed. Finally, there is an analysis of several reminiscences of those who knew Bosman, including Lionel Abrahams’s important memoir. The strengths and limitations of the various biographies are analysed, thereby shedding light not only on the practice of biography itself, but also on the complex and enigmatic figure of Herman Charles Bosman.

Abstract : While studying Frank Zappa?s Lumpy Gravy, what we?re trying to develop is a notion of living work of art, made subject, that maintains its flux while letting its master go dumb. We?ll see that Lumpy Gravy helps us, in its montage, in the direction of such a concept while putting in stake the very core of negativity that is found in human craft. We?ll take the work of art through the process of sublimation, psychoanalytic term here studied according to the elaboration of Jacques Lacan in its Seminary Book 7. The suggestion here built is that Lumpy Gravy operates in the sublimation of its material support, its archival condition, as its symptom. For that we?ll work the notion of lacanian sinthome with Warburg?s seismography. The work of art is found in the reader, which means it is found in the craft of a gaze. This study if an attempt to elaborate on the gaze of Lumpy Gravy.

Abstract:
Through an examination of the processes and influences on the character of grey literature and its producers, this thesis explores the nature of archaeological investigation, how it is reported and the creation of archaeological data in England from 1990 to 2010 and the implications for future understanding of the English archaeological record. I intend to address broad research questions regarding grey literature and archaeology: What is grey literature? Who creates it and why? What is it meant for? Is it fit-for-purpose? My research objectives in studying grey literature reporting and archaeological fieldwork investigation in England are: •To explore the nature of archaeological grey literature reporting and its producers, the framework of its production and communication, and its impact on archaeological research and knowledge production; •To capture the developments and changes in English archaeological practice between 1990 and 2010 and their implications for the creation and understanding of the archaeological record; and •To consider potential future directions for archaeological fieldwork and reporting. I propose to achieve this using a combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches including spatial analysis techniques, comparative analysis at a range of scales from England-wide to individual case study areas, and detailed analysis of the nature and actual content of grey literature reports alongside a characterisation of the many creators of grey literature reporting. This study will illustrate and explore the process of producing grey literature reporting as well as examining the end product itself - grey literature reports. This European Research Council funded DPhil research was undertaken within the context of the English Landscapes and Identities Project, which analyses change and continuity in the English Landscape from the middle Bronze Age (c.1500 BC) to the Domesday survey (c. AD 1086).

Abstract:
Context: The Internet has become a vital channel for disseminating and accessing scientific literature for both the academic and industrial research needs. Nowadays, everyone has wide access to scientific literature repositories, which comprise of both “white” and “Grey” literature. The “Grey” literature, as opposed to “white” literature, is non-peer reviewed scientific information that is not available using commercial information sources such as IEEE or ACM. A large number of software engineering researchers are undertaking systematic literature reviews (SLRs) to investigate empirical evidence in software engineering. The key reason to include grey literature during information synthesis is to minimize the risk of any bias in the publication. Using the state of the art non-commercial databases that index information, the researchers can make the rigorous process of searching empirical studies in SLRs easier. This study explains the evidence of Grey literature while performing synthesis in Systematic Literature Reviews. Objectives: The goals of this thesis work are, 1. To identify the extent of usage of Grey Literature in synthesis during systematic literature reviews. 2. To investigate if non-commercial information sources primarily Google Scholar are sufficient for retrieving primary studies for SLRs. Methods: The work consists of a systematic literature review of SLRs and is a tertiary study and meta-analysis. The systematic literature review was conducted on 138 SLRs’ published through 2003 until 2012 (June). The article sources used are IEEEXplore, ACM Digital Library, Springer-Link and Science Direct. Results: For each of the selected article sources such as ACM, IEEEXplore, Springer-link and Science Direct, we have presented results, which describe the extent of the usage of Grey literature. The qualitative results discuss various strategies for systematic evaluation of the Grey literature during systematic literature review. The quantitative results comprise of charts and tables, showing the extent of Grey literature usage. The results from analysis of Google Scholar database describe the total number of primary studies that we are able to find using only Google Scholar database. Conclusion: From the analysis of 138 Systematic Literature Reviews (SLRs’), we conclude that the evidence of Grey literature in SLRs is around 9%. The percentage of Grey literature sources used in information synthesis sections of SLRs is around 93.2%. We were able to retrieve around 96 % of primary studies using Google Scholar database. We conclude that Google Scholar can be a choice for retrieving published studies however; it lacks detailed search options to target wider pool of articles. We also conclude that Grey literature is widely available in this age of information. We have provided guidelines in the form of strategies for systematic evaluation of Grey literature.

Abstract:
In this project, I examine the impact of early literary criticism, early literary history, and the history of knowledge on the perception of the laureateship as it was formulated at specific moments in the eighteenth century. Instead of accepting the assessments of Pope and Johnson, I reconstruct the contemporary impact of laureate writings and the writing that fashioned the view of the laureates we have inherited. I use an array of primary documents (from letters and journal entries to poems and non-fiction prose) to analyze the way the laureateship as a literary identity was constructed in several key moments: the debate over hack literature in the pamphlet wars surrounding Elkanah Settle’s The Empress of Morocco (1673), the defense of Colley Cibber and his subsequent attempt to use his expertise of theater in An Apology for the Life of Colley Cibber (1740), the consolidation of hack literature and state-sponsored poetry with the crowning of Colley Cibber as the King of the Dunces in Pope’s The Dunciad in Four Books (1742), the fashioning of Thomas Gray and William Mason as laureate rejecters in Mason’s Memoirs of the Life and Writings of William Whitehead (1788), Southey’s progressive work to abolish laureate task writing in his laureate odes 1813-1821, and, finally, in Wordsworth’s refusal to produce any laureate task writing during his tenure, 1843-1850. In each case, I explain how the construction of this office was central to the consolidation of literary history and to forging authorial identity in the same period. This differs from the conventional treatment of the laureates because I expose the history of the versions of literary history that have to date structured how scholars understand the laureate, and by doing so, reveal how the laureateship was used to create, legitimate and disseminate the model of literary history we still use today.

This present dissertation intends to accompany Oscar Wilde's steps through late Victorian London, the booming center of an already decadent Empire. At this time being, positivist and imperialist discourses explain the reality. Both the medical science and the law fight over the theme of homosexuality. In a time when the symbolic authority to name homosexual desire is being questioned, Wilde is brave enough to state the precedence of the artist in naming the world. His life and works cause exalted reactions. His excentricities outrage London's high-society, of which Wilde becomes the arbiter of elegance, despite being a complete outsider: Irish and homosexual. He lives Aestheticism and dandism to the fullest, he lives a purposedly gay lifestyle and excites the fear of exerting some sort of "corruption" or "influence" over young men of the British society. His writing, through the use of paradoxes and symbolic invertions, shows the underpinnings of the aparently neutral text of normative reality. In his judgment, he is turned into the scapegoat of a severely repressed and puritan society. His works have founded the camp sensibility and a decidedly homosexual aesthetics

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the way that moral and aesthetic concerns about the relationship between fiction and reality are manifested in the work of particular novelists writing at different periods in the nineteenth century, Chapter One examines an early-century subgenre of the novel that features deluded female readers who fail to differentiate between fantasy and reality, and who consequently attempt to live their lives according to foolish precepts learned from novels. The second chapter deals with the realist aesthetic of W. M. Thackeray; focusing on the techniques by which his fiction marks its own relationship both to less realistic fiction and to reality itself. The final chapter discusses Oscar Wilde's critical stance that art is meaningful and intellectually satisfying, while reality and realism are aesthetically worthless: it then goes on the explore how these ideas play out in his novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Vlachidis, Andreas. "Semantic indexing via knowledge organization systems : applying the CIDOC-CRM to archaeological grey literature." Thesis, University of South Wales, 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1556224/.

Full text
Abstract:
The volume of archaeological reports being produced since the introduction of PG161 has significantly increased, as a result of the increased volume of archaeological investigations conducted by academic and commercial archaeology. It is highly desirable to be able to search effectively within and across such reports in order to find information that promotes quality research. A potential dissemination of information via semantic technologies offers the opportunity to improve archaeological practice, not only by enabling access to information but also by changing how information is structured and the way research is conducted. This thesis presents a method for automatic semantic indexing of archaeological greyliterature reports using rule-based Information Extraction techniques in combination with domain-specific ontological and terminological resources. This semantic annotation of contextual abstractions from archaeological grey-literature is driven by Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques which are used to identify “rich” meaningful pieces of text, thus overcoming barriers in document indexing and retrieval imposed by the use of natural language. The semantic annotation system (OPTIMA) performs the NLP tasks of Named Entity Recognition, Relation Extraction, Negation Detection and Word Sense disambiguation using hand-crafted rules and terminological resources for associating contextual abstractions with classes of the ISO Standard (ISO 21127:2006) CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) for cultural heritage and its archaeological extension, CRM-EH, together with concepts from English Heritage thesauri and glossaries. The results demonstrate that the techniques can deliver semantic annotations of archaeological grey literature documents with respect to the domain conceptual models. Such semantic annotations have proven capable of supporting semantic query, document study and cross-searching via web based applications. The research outcomes have provided semantic annotations for the Semantic Technologies for Archaeological Resources (STAR) project, which explored the potential of semantic technologies in the integration of archaeological digital resources. The thesis represents the first discussion on the employment of CIDOC CRM and CRM-EH in semantic annotation of grey-literature documents using rule-based Information Extraction techniques driven by a supplementary exploitation of domain-specific ontological and terminological resources. It is anticipated that the methods can be generalised in the future to the broader field of Digital Humanities.

Abstract:
Marie Henri Beyle, best known as Stendhal, is an exciting and passionate writer considered one of the world literature leaders now. Precisely, this fascination in his ideas led to the misunderstanding of the author in his time, something he was well aware. He made clear that he was writing for another time to come. Throughout this thesis, the different aspects that justify its modernity are shown. Stendhal has a varied and short literary production, understandable after studying his biography, included in a period marked by censorship and the echoes of the French Revolution. This work has used the Reception Theory methodology to check what the author meant over time, seen from the press of those days and more specifically, his primary work: Red and Black. As an innovation for this work, we wanted to go beyond his famous sentence: "I will be Known in 1880, I will be understood in 1930." We show a study of the figure of Stendhal conducted in the educational world nowadays, particularly at the schools of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria (Spain) and some textbooks used at them. So we check whether nowadays he has achieved the recognition he deserved.

Abstract: This work is the result of an investigation conducted with 9th year Elementary School students from a public institution in São Paulo State, about reading chronicles, especially those already established by the great writers of Brazilian literature and perpetuated in the books. So we decided to consider if the text genre chronicle can contribute to the formation of the aesthetic reader, since this genre has been explored in different teaching materials used in the school, like the support materials of the Currículo do Estado de São Paulo, the textbooks, as well as other materials that include the teaching of reading. For this reason, we present some reflections on the theoretical assumptions that guide this research, such as the methodology, the conception of language, of reading, of reader, of text types and genres, the teaching of literature and the strategies involving the development of reading comprehension. The theoretical basis for this research comes mainly from the dialogical conception of language proposed by Bakhtin (1997, 2006) and from the sociointeractionist concepton proposed by Vygotsky (1991, 1994), besides the contributions of the Reception Aesthetic Theory, more specifically the Recepcional Method suggested by Bordini and Aguiar (1993). In order to develop this investigation, it was used the qualitative methodology of interpretative character, applying the procedures provided in the narrative research. It was also proposed a reflection on what concerns the reading of chronicles, if this work, based on the theoretical principles described, could assure to the students the development of reading comprehension, as well as the expansion of their horizons of expectation

Abstract:
This essay argues, with the help of Lacanian psychoanalysis, that Dorian Gray, the protagonist in Oscar Wilde’s novel, fails to abide by the rules governed by the culture of society. It is argued that Lacan’s theories about the mirror stage develop Dorian’s character and his realizations of his true self as part of the culture which shapes him. The mirror is represented by the four characters Basil Hallward, Lord Henry Wotton, Sibyl Vane, and Sibyl’s brother James. Basil, Henry, and Sibyl are all representations of different aspects of the mirror explained by Lacan’s theories, and these three characters help Dorian realize his true identity and self.
