Abstract:
This article examines the origin of ancient catacomb-type graves, about its erroneous use at one time in relation to the graves of the Zamanbaba culture based on the historiography of Soviet archeology. At one time, V.A. Gorodtsov also mistakenly called the undercut graves catacomb, as evidenced by his graphic drawings. Our further studies of real catacomb graves on the territory of the Akhangaron Valley showed what a catacomb-type grave is, its internal structure and the time of its appearance in Central Asia. Unfortunately, Russian colleagues-archaeologists, without delving into the internal structure of catacomb-type graves, repeat the terminological errors of Soviet historiography, as evidenced by the candidate dissertation of Yu.G. Kutimova “The origin and ways of spreading the catacomb burial rite in Central Asia (based on the materials of the burial grounds of the Bronze Age) to which the authors' self-critical approach to determining the time of the appearance of the catacomb device of graves is devoted, also criticizes Russian colleagues in the interpretation and interpretation of archaeological sources of Central Asia in the Soviet conservatism historiography

Abstract:
For the first time, there is presented the comprehensive analysis of the works of Soviet artists of book of the second half of the 1920s, engaged in the book design of the collected works. The flood of the book market with multi-volumes of fiction can be considered a kind of revenge of “big forms”, reaction to the previous stage of book culture, where brochure played the leading role. In the second half of the 1920s, the collected works were most often published in soft-covers. Each volume could be issued as a separate book, strikingly different from the other volumes. This gave the artists a certain freedom of manoeuvre and allowed to break the ingrained stereotypes. There was widely used a spectacular technique: the cover drawing was the same for all volumes, but the colouring of each volume varied. The aim of the article is to expand the established ideas about the book design of the 1920s, to consider and introduce into scientific circulation the forgotten works of known artists. The author carried out the comparative analysis of the multi-volumes issued by the leading publishing houses of those years, using the complex of complementary methods: bibliological, art historical and general historical.Gosizdat was the undisputed leader in the quantitative indicators of publications of the collected works, but its artistic policy in that area was characterized by old-fashioned conservatism tended to minimize the visual elements. The famous publishing house “Academia” in those years published the collected works quite rarely, but enriched the art of book with graphic cycles of such outstanding masters as V.A. Favorsky and N.P. Akimov. The book designers of the publishing house “Zemlya i Fabrika” were particularly successful and consistent in updating the appearance of the collected works: their works had a broad stylistic range and tendency to experiment. Creative search of artists of the 1920s deserves the attention of book historians, designers, illustrators, publishers, because it can give them productive creative ideas.

Abstract:
Robust methods for the predictions of deformations and lifetimes of components operating in the creep range are presented. The ingredients used for this are well-tried numerical techniques, combined with the concepts of continuum damage and so-called reference stresses. The methods described are derived in order to obtain the maximum benefit during the early stages of design where broad assessments of the influences of material choice, loadings, and geometry need to be made quickly and with economical use of computers. It is also intended that the same methods will be of value during operation if estimates of damage or if exercises in life extension are required. Results of the suggested method are amenable to tabular or graphic representation. To illustrate the use of these in parametric studies, three brief case studies are included. These involve a notched rod, a perforated plate, and a pipe for which lifetime estimates based upon failure criteria involving different degrees of conservatism are calculated. In addition, an illustration is given of the use of the charts presented in deciding inspection intervals and lifetime extensions. Finally, a brief excursion into the possibility for using the suggested methods for the mapping of designs within given regional constraints is given.

Abstract:
The study is based on the problem of domestic design entering the international market and the development of competitive products by improving its aesthetic qualities. Although a considerable amount of research has been devoted to the problem artistic and aesthetic interpretation, few attempts have been made to investigate formation of the designer's interpretive competence. However, it’s a major component of project activity. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the concept of forming of aesthetic consciousness of the future designers by means of interpretive activity. To achieve the goal of the research the author uses the following scientific methods: the method of studying and generalizing theoretical and practical scientific experience, the method of comparison, the method of analysis, the method of synthesis, the method of artistic and aesthetic interpretation. The essence of the concept of “artistic and aesthetic interpretation” has been substantiated in the article. The author analyzes the object of orientation of the process of artistic and aesthetic interpretation, its result and the features of the interpretive activity. In the article the author highlights the positions on the interpretation of the concept of “aesthetic consciousness of personality” from the broad and narrow position of its understanding. The article describes the main components of the aesthetic consciousness of personality: aesthetic feeling, aesthetic taste and aesthetic ideal. In the article the author notes the shortcomings of the approaches of artistic conservatism and artistic progressiveness in the project activity. The author emphasizes that the only optimal approach to the development of the aesthetic in the present is the “compromise approach”. In the article the author analyzes the creativity of the Ukrainian domestic designers and graphic artists of the 21st century. In the following types of the project activities: graphic design, installation art (art design), book design, environment design (street art, supergraphics). The author reflects the level of implementation of the aesthetic component and the spiritual and semantic filling of the art works, as well as divides the art works by the rank of high and low artistic and aesthetic value. The article reveals the tendencies of development of the domestic art market and its positive and negative influences on the formation of the aesthetic consciousness of personality are grounded. The author argues that the degree of development of aesthetic consciousness and interpretive skills is an important factor in the professional development of the future designers.

Abstract. Heritage graphic representation combining building spatial location and urban/land planning supports the decision-making of government agencies and simplifies the development of protection and conservation projects. The evolution of web-based open-source representation systems, able to store 3D graphics information and to make it accessible by web platforms, allows to develop novel heritage catalogues which simplify the exchange of information between administrations and citizens. This work is devoted to the creation of the Digital 3D Inventory of the Aragonese Mudéjar Architectural Heritage, a list of 225 buildings with unique architectural elements which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. We propose a generalized methodology for collecting, store and disseminate friendly 2D geospatial and 3D geometric documentation of the historical buildings, ensuring that valuable information is stored and providing greater graphic and documentary resources than traditional inventories of architectural heritage. The main novelty is creation of a web platform which allows the exploitation of the architectural information through a cartographic webGIS viewer and a 3D environment based on webGL for rendering large point clouds. The proposed web platform enables to delivery 3D content through generic web browsers natively supported by all devices and without installing third-party applications neither downloading massive data files.

Connon, William. "Comments on Kurtosis of Military Vehicle Vibration Data." Journal of the IEST 34, no. 6 (November 1, 1991): 38–41. http://dx.doi.org/10.17764/jiet.2.34.6.bn229t63315k1412.

Abstract:
Road vibration tests were recently conducted on a series of shelters on dolly sets and on a series of prototype trucks at the U.S. Army Combat Systems Test Activity (USACSTA) at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Data from histogram or amplitude distribution tables were plotted in the normal probability domain to provide a graphic representation. When examining these probability plot data, a divergence of the actual distribution from the normal distribution at the tails was noticed. Of the 104 trials compared, the normal distribution was exceeded by 30 trials at the 90 percent level, 87 trials at the 99 percent level, and 88 trials at the 99.9 percent level. This indicates that the actual measured values at the extreme ends of the distribution (beyond the 90 percent occurrence levels) are larger in magnitude (acceleration) than would be predicted by the assumption of a normal distribution. This same trend was noticed during examination of the kurtosis values for the same data sets. The values generally exceeded a value of three, which is the expected value for a Gaussian distribution. Because the kurtosis is largely affected by data values far from the mean, a correlation between the normalized 99.9 percent values and the normalized kurtosis values was tried. A linear regression line was fit through the data, which produced a correlation of approximately 0.82. Although no formal effort has been put forth to catalog kurtosis measurements from military vehicles, it has generally been observed that the kurtosis values obtained from operation over our test courses is greater than three, indicating that the tails of a vibration distribution from operation over severe terrain are further from the mean (larger amplitude) than would be predicted from a normal distribution. If the kurtosis of the laboratory test distribution is less than that of the field distribution, the extreme values seen in the field environment will not be duplicated in the lab. The addition of conservatism during the schedule development process should be enough to overcome this difference; however, dome effort should be made to develop a "bi-domain" (frequency and time domain amplitude) control system so that the amplitude distribution of the lab test will more closely match that of the field data from which the schedule was derived.

Abstract:
Graphic statics is undergoing a renaissance, with computerized visual representation becoming both easier and more spectacular as time passes. While methods of the past are revived, little emphasis has been placed on studying the mathematics behind these methods. Due to the considerable advances of our mathematical understanding since the birth of graphic statics, we can learn a lot by examining these old methods from a more modern viewpoint. As such, this work shows the mathematical fabric joining different aspects of graphic statics, like dualities, reciprocal diagrams, and discontinuous stress functions. This is done by introducing a new, three dimensional force diagram (containing the old two dimensional force diagram) depicting the three dimensional equilibrium of planar force systems. A corresponding three dimensional “form diagram” (dual diagram) is introduced, in which forces are treated as linear functionals (dual vectors). It is shown that the polyhedral stress function introduced by Maxwell is in fact a linear combination of these functionals; and the projective dualities connecting these three dimensional diagrams are also explained.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction. At the end of the 20th century in the arsenal of traditional economic theory, there were not enough means by which it was possible to explain the not always rational behavior of economic subjects, which prompted the emergence of the concept of behavioral finance as a new direction of financial education. The subject of research of this concept was primarily the impact of emotional, cultural, psychological, social and other factors on the making of financial decisions by household members. Therefore, the use of the findings of the concept of behavioral finance in modern scientific research will provide an opportunity to justify, and therefore to a certain extent influence the irrational behavior of domestic households, to forecast and model their financial decision-making strategies, as well as to increase the level of financial literacy of Ukrainians. The purpose of the scientific research is to analyze the pragmatics of the formation and implementation of the financial behavior of Ukrainian households in the context of the development of the theory of behavioral finance and to highlight modern trends and current models of such behavior in the conditions of a full-scale war in Ukraine. Research methods: analysis and synthesis, system approach, statistical observation, comparative and logical-structural analysis, graphic interpretation of data, generalization. The main results of the study. It is emphasized that the behavioral model of financial decision-making is based on the main behavioral theories ("theory of prospects", "theory of investor behavior", "theory of noise trading", "theory of the efficiency of trader operations") and effects ("loss aversion effect", "status-quo effect ", "ownership effect", "ostrich effect", "certainty effect", "trap effect", "conservatism effect", "competence effect"). The factors, types and main models of financial behavior of households are singled out and the impact of financial literacy on their formation and implementation is substantiated. The consumer, saving and charitable components of the financial behavior of domestic households were analyzed and the current trends in their formation and implementation in the conditions of a full-scale war in Ukraine were investigated. Considerable attention is paid to the pragmatics of the formation of consumer and financial patriotism of Ukrainians and the specifics of using such a new instrument of citizens' savings as investing in military bonds. Conclusions. The article characterizes the main theories of behavioral finance, elucidates the essence of household financial behavior, defines its most common types, models and factors. Modern trends in the financial behavior of Ukrainian households are identified and analyzed through the prism of the concept of behavioral finance.

As the basic study of energy conservation, Apparent Potential of Energy Saving and Emission Reduction (AP-ESER) analysis is a key link of energy conservation work in China. Compared with developed countries, the performances of energy conservation are not remarkable in most developing countries, which ensured the dominant position of apparent potential in the whole potential field. Based on the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method model and total-factor framework, the study established an AP-ESER analysis system. We investigated a sample of 30 provinces in China, used K-means clustering method, GIS special labeling method and radar graphic method to analyze the results, and divided the 30 provinces into 5 clusters according to the visual potential of energy conservation. At the same time, we tried to find the key factors of energy conservation in each province following the status comparison of radar graphic method, and listed it under the sort of critical degree of the factors.

Abstract:
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The contemporary rise of data visualization and imaging technologies in all areas of knowledge now places design and visuality at the heart of research and its communication, with fundamental implications for scientific epistemology. Jacques Bertin's Laboratoire de Graphique (LG) of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in France, is a privileged entry for this study, since it was a major player in this movement, at the crossroads of graphic innovation and social sciences as they reinvented themselves in the second half of the twentieth century.</p><p>This intervention aims to explore a black box of research in the humanities and social sciences, according to two approaches, that of the interdisciplinary collaborations and that more experimental of the graphic design and formatting of information. By design we mean as all the processes from graphical display of data, to CHI, new methods of scientific representation.</p><p>This laboratory was created and directed by the cartographer and semiologist Jacques Bertin from 1954 to 2000 at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Études and, under the impetus of Fernand Braudel, at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), is considered as a forerunner of productions and reflections on graphic research in the social sciences. His work articulates an unprecedented production of images, visualization of data and scientific research, forming the subject of a fundamental treatise, Graphical Semiology (1967). The intervention will trace the largely unknown history of this laboratory, will pinpoint the contributions and the intellectual trajectory of its graphic experiments and collaborations.</p><p>Indeed, while the activities related to the LG's cartographic research are relatively well known, its interactions with history, statistics, sociology, anthropology, urbanism, literature and the decorative arts remain unexplored.</p><p>Jacques Bertin, in <i>Semiology of graphics</i> (1967), highlighted the concept of « visual variables » to build a general rhetoric of visual representation: background shape orientation grain color, etc.</p><p>The paradox of these visual variables is the desire to achieve an objectivity of representation, while taking into account the ”aesthetic“ part of the data. This graphic rhetoric developed by Bertin has influenced many works and disciplines, becoming almost standard, convention, rules. In this session we propose to discuss the relationship between design and visual variables in the contemporary visual display of information.</p><p>We will start by presenting the two complementary funds of archives of the Laboratoire de Graphique the NAs and the BnF, allowing a genetic analysis of the origin of certain concepts of Bertin to give an account of the process of their elaboration.</p><p>We will present collaborations, content, and processes to produce a story that is at once aesthetic, social, economic, and political. We will measure the evolution of scientific imaginaries, the values and uses of representation methods and graphic communication tools, their epistemological scope into 4 thematics:</p><ol><li>The Life of the Graphic Lab: Pathways, Collaborations and Practices at EHESS. Collaboration Braudel-Bertin,creation of the visual identity of the EHESS, practices and conceptualization of the place of graphic research in the social sciences. Bertin heritage in current research programs</li><li>The graphic semiotics of Jacques Bertin: genesis and effects, including in contemporary digital humanities (statistics, big data, cultural analytics). Visual variable and Display of information as the starting point of a research, fieldworks</li><li>The expressivity and plasticity of graphic work: the representation of geographical and human territory. Contribution of the experimental work of the Graphical Laboratory to cartography; materialization of the instrumental design and graphic knowledge in the uses and materiality of the cards from the point of view of the plastic creation and the patrimonial conservation. Objectivity and visual display: relationships between graphics and fact in scientific demonstration</li><li>Graphical semiology in contemporary research, from graphic semiology to information design; pedagogical and epistemological issues of graphic semiology; dissemination of the work of the Laboratoire de Graphique and impact on the field of design and different disciplines in the international context. « Redesigning » the concepts of Bertin: how new data processing tools can contribute?</li></ol><p>The new convergences between design and research will be mobilized to question the place devolved to design in the visual and instrumental construction of contemporary scientific practices and knowledge. This will stimulate a dynamic and a collective experience of interdisciplinary discovery of uses of these methods and tools in heritage context.</p>

Abstract:
Aerospace heritage requires tools that allow its transfer and conservation beyond photographs and texts. The complexity of these engineering projects can be collected through digital graphic representation. Nevertheless, physical scale models provide additional information of high value when they involve full detailed information, for which the model in engineering was normally one more product of the manufacturing process, which entails a high cost. However, the standardization of digital fabrication allows the manufacture of high-detail models at low cost. For this reason, in this paper a case study of the graphic reengineering and planning stages for digital fabrication of a full-scale high-detail model (HDM) of the spatial instrument of the European Space Agency, named the Solar Orbiter mission Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (SO/PHI), is presented. After the analysis of this experience, seven stages of planning and graphic reengineering are proposed through collaborative work for the low cost digital manufacture of HDMs.

Abstract:
Highlights: Graphic tools and virtual reconstruction applied to watermills contribute to their overall understanding as an anthropogenic landscape. Virtual reconstruction of the milling mechanisms allows us to understand the mill operation beyond the mere construction preservation. The Riamonte mills are an example of a group of canal mills linked to a single dam and with a social typology of inheriting turns to grind. Abstract: Each concello (municipality) in Galicia is home to a large number of pre-industrial rural heritage assets integrated into the landscape. Among them are the water mills, usually made up of small constructions that are difficult to reuse in their original function. They are not easily compatible with other uses either. Their current state of abandonment requires their cataloguing and correct valorization as pre-industrial archaeological heritage. These constructions must be conceived as interrelated constructive groupings, in their original physical and social context. A good example of this is the unpublished sample of the Riamonte milling complex. Its study, digitalization and virtual recreation by means of computer-assisted graphics have great potential for dissemination to the public and better integration into the nature trail near the riverbed. Graphically presenting archaeological heritage through virtual media helps to promote social understanding in order to raise awareness of the importance of its protection and irreplaceable nature, especially in case of those vestiges lacking sufficient security to survive. Due to the large amount of vegetation around the wall remains, a rigorous planimetric survey of the entire complex was carried out, followed by three-dimensional (3D) modelling of representative elements. In addition, applying a rigorous principle of transparency, a chromatic differentiation is made in the 2D and 3D virtual reconstructions between already existing and newly added elements. Regarding the 3D model, a historical-archaeological evidence scale is used, allowing a graphic identification of the authenticity degree required to provide reliability in the reconstruction of lost or altered parts. This facilitates virtual recreation interpretation among future researchers from different disciplines. The Riamonte mill complex is part of a typology typical of the region, in which the use of virtual models makes it possible to reach the scales of the territory, the building and the machinery, facilitating the correct understanding of this cultural heritage.

Abstract. The Negro Tower, in El Algar, Cartagena (Region of Murcia, Spain), is a building which dates to 1585. It is a tower built in a rural environment, inland from the coast, to alert and protect the population from pirate attacks. It was part of the network of watchtowers and defense posts along the coast of Murcia built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The tower is protected as a historical monument, but its state of conservation is very poor. For this reason, a comprehensive study has been carried out to ensure its correct restoration and future conservation. Historical and constructive analysis has allowed us to discover the social, cultural and architectural characteristics of the tower. Digital photogrammetry and 3D laser scanning compatible with classic topography have been used for the graphic survey of the tower. All this information has permitted the elaboration of thorough three-dimensional modelling and the proposal of a volumetric recomposition of the tower. The presentation will set out the working methodology followed as well as the important results achieved. This research work aims to contribute to the recognition and correct conservation of the Tower. The graphic survey and the three-dimensional model obtained will allow the recovery of the tower and its integration into the natural environment.

Abstract:
The goals of zoos are providing an entertaining and educational experience for visitors, promoting environmental conservation, and promoting positive welfare for nonhuman residents. Education can unify these goals. In this study, data were collected on visitors to the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) exhibit at The Zoo Northwest Florida. Researchers implemented three conditions of education at the chimpanzee viewing platform: a graphic sign, a trained docent, and a control condition with no intervention. The sign and docent encouraged visitors to use affinitive chimpanzee behaviors. Visitors were significantly more active in the graphic sign condition and significantly less active in the docent condition, and their behavior did not vary from the expected value during the control condition. Visitors used the affinitive behaviors that were demonstrated in each experimental condition. These results suggest that both graphic signs and docent interaction affect visitor behavior and can be considered useful educational tools for fulfilling the goals of the zoos.

Abstract:
<p>This paper presents an applied methodology for the graphic documentation, analysis and criteria determination for the protection and conservation of built heritage. One of the main risks when restoring medieval rammed earth architecture is the lacking of an optimal graphic base of its structures. This paper’s main objective is the holistic knowledge of the Píñar fortress (Granada), analysis the building sequence from an archaeological perspective, and performing a rigorous 3D survey of its structures as a fundamental procedure. This survey was carried out applying the new technologies in graphic documentation: Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based multi-image photogrammetry and Structure-from-Motion (SfM) processing. The new systems of aerial three-dimensional (3D) capture and representation are changing the paradigm in the architectural heritage documentation, being much more efficient and precise. This high-quality documentation is fundamental for the archaeological research of the fortress’ building sequence, remarkably easing research as well as results dissemination. The constructive techniques and building sequence study made with archaeological methodology has revealed the complex historical evolution of Píñar fortress, since it was built in the Almohad period, with important transformations in Nasrid and Castilian periods. These alterations in such a narrow span of time shed light on the importance of this fortification in the border organization in the Late Middle Ages. The experimentation with Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools applied to heritage (HBIM) is showing its great potential in processing data linked to conceptual models, integrating graphic documentation with archaeological and historical interpretation. Nevertheless, the complexity of historical buildings and the hard work of manual modelling are making its wider use in archaeology difficult. The BIM model of Píñar fortress has been enriched with data such as type of material, building technique, chronology, pathologies and modifications, differentiating the historical phases with specific colours to make its identification easier. Its aim is to acquire a better knowledge of the fortress historical evolution, thus allowing the creation of conservation and protection strategies. The holistic knowledge of a building is a complex task that requires the work of different professionals. The ones in charge of the graphic documentation must know the survey objectives and the needs of the rest of the team. The current and future management of heritage requires professionals working on conservation with updated skills in digital technologies. The results of public heritage research with these technologies should be in open access platforms to be used by all researchers and professionals that could need them.</p>

Abstract:
Suitable graphic documentation is essential to ascertain and conserve architectural heritage. For the first time, accurate digital images are provided of a 16th-century wooden ceiling, composed of geometric interlacing patterns, in the Pinelo Palace in Seville. Today, this ceiling suffers from significant deformation. Although there are many publications on the digital documentation of architectural heritage, no graphic studies on this type of deformed ceilings have been presented. This study starts by providing data on the palace history concerning the design of geometric interlacing patterns in carpentry according to the 1633 book by López de Arenas, and on the ceiling consolidation in the 20th century. Images were then obtained using two complementary procedures: from a 3D laser scanner, which offers metric data on deformations; and from photogrammetry, which facilitates the visualisation of details. In this way, this type of heritage is documented in an innovative graphic approach, which is essential for its conservation and/or restoration with scientific foundations and also to disseminate a reliable digital image of the most beautiful ceiling of this Renaissance palace in southern Europe.

Purpose This paper aims to illustrate how graphic novel adaptations can engage adolescents in conversations about gender and society, particularly when adaptations are weighed against messaging found in a student’s everyday life such as religiously motivated gender normativity. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on quantitative and qualitative analyzes of the interview, think-aloud and survey data collected from 15 adolescents who self-identified as Modern Orthodox Jewish women. Texts used for think-aloud were three graphic novel adaptations that critically adapted potentially misogynistic readings and interpretations of religious Jewish texts such as the Bible. Findings Epistemic network analysis and constructivist grounded theory show that visual elements found in each adaptation can spark deeply personal reflections on topics that are often explicitly or implicitly suppressed by social norms such as gender normativity in Jewish texts and practices. Originality/value This paper is timely and contributes to understanding the apparent cultural clash between religious conservativism and movements for social change, using the graphic novel to mediate between them.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the impact of pH of the paper on the state of preservation, to describe the main methods of neutralization of acidity in the implementation of restoration and conservation measures for the preservation of architectural graphics. To indicate the need to monitor the pH state when preserving paper-based collections. Methodology. To analyze the art, methods of systematization, comparison, and generalization to determine and describe the optimal techniques and experience for the preservation of collections of architectural graphics on a paper basis. The scientific novelty consists in a comprehensive study of the relationship between pH and the state of preservation of architectural graphics and methods of neutralization of the acidity in the process of conservation and restoration. Conclusions. It is established that the acidity is due to the parameters of paper production, due to natural aging processes, air pollution, adsorption of acid impurities in the paper, storage conditions, a technique using certain pigments, and so on. It is necessary to monitor the acidity when implementing preventive conservation measures as it is an important indicator of physico-chemical changes in the paper. Acidity accelerates the process of hydrolytic cleavage of cellulose molecules and is one of the reasons for the loss of paper-based collections. A large number of monuments requires conservation and restoration measures to neutralize the pH. Existing methods of stabilization and buffering of acidity are effective, but the search for new, easier to implement, cheaper solutions is ongoing. The new methods can have a longer effect and can be widely used in collections.

Abstract:
Mobile games and graphics are popular because un-tethered computing is convenient and ubiquitous entertainment is compelling. However, rendering graphics on mobile devices faces challenges due to limited system resources, such as battery energy, and low memory and disk space. Real time frame rates, low energy consumption and high image quality are all desirable attributes of interactive mobile graphics; however, achieving these objectives is conflicting. For instance, increasing mesh resolutions improves rendered image quality but consumes more battery energy. Therefore, the authors propose a mobile graphics heuristic to minimize energy consumption while maintaining acceptable image quality and interactive frame rates. Over the lifetime of a mobile graphics application, scene complexity, animation paths, user interactivity and other elements all change its CPU and resource demands. In this regard, a heuristic that dynamically changes scene mesh LoDs and amount of CPU timeslices allotted to the mobile graphics application is presented to select optimal operating conditions that balance rendering speed, energy conservation and image quality. Additionally, a workload predict model is proposed so that the heuristic can monitor both application workload and the availability of resources of mobile devices periodically, while adaptively determining how much resources will be allocated to applications.

Abstract:
The paper discusses how a Geographic Information System (GIS) contributes to set up a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for the sustainable preservation of a 20th-century architectural masterpiece. The National Art Schools of Cuba are presented as a case study. The complex consists of five iconic buildings built in the early 1960s within a 56-hectare city-park. Since they are today underused and in a poor state of conservation, a research project among Italy, Cuba, and the US addressed a CMP’s preparation between 2018 and 2020. A GIS was prepared to collect and manage the whole data, based on graphic support consistent with both the site’s features and the research’s goal, to set up a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan. By illustrating this experience’s pros and cons, the paper discusses how GIS may contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of such extensive 20th-century architectural complexes.

Abstract:
This essay on electoral geography, the first, perhaps, to be published in Canada, is divided into four distinct parts. The first one deals with the themes of the twenty five provincial electoral campaigns. It includes maps showing the results of the votation in every county of the Province, as divided between the two main political parties, the Liberal and the Conservative. The second part, almost exclusively graphic, examines the political attitude of every provincial county. To circumvent the various problems, graphic curves have been established, indicating the percentage of the liberal and conservative voters and of the nonvoters. In a third part, some aspects of a very particular electoral phenomenon, abstention, are studied. After all possible causes of error had been discarded, a nonvoter curve was obtained, which is used, in particular, to study the fluctuations of the parties. Finally, the influence of the rural vote, a basic element in a long life ministerial party, the geographical distribution of the parties and its evolution within the regions according to certain causes v.g. economic crises, and the Québec electoral System, in relation to the vote and to the parties, are analyzed in a last part about the conditions of political life in the Province of Québec.

Abstract:
The difficulty of comprehending artistic terminology in the Renaissance was associated with the activities of humanist philologists and scholarly antiquarians. Interest in antiquity was inherent in artists and architects. Around the archaeological work of Raphael, Ligorio, associations of learned humanists were organized, which accompanied their archaeological research with philological clarifications. The functions of archeology were combined with the need to check the terms, with the help of a visual, graphically reconstructed monument, which, as a rule, came down with losses. In this regard, scientists had to use their erudition and ingenuity to display the ruined monument in its entirety. An example of such a field of activity is printed graphics, which allows depicting monuments graphically and accompanying illustrations with albums of antiquities, replicating images of individual works of art. Such was the direction of the printing workshop of comrade Rafael Marcantonio Raimondi. A number of works by Marcantonio, as well as engravings by Agostino Veneziano and Marco Dente, were made from drawings by Raphael. Some of the drawings were related to Raphael’s archaeological interests, such as the engraving of the Laocoön group (1519) by Marco Dente. Among philologists, after the publication of P. Bembo’s treatise “Discourses in Prose on the Folk Language” (1525), where in the second part of the treatise the author proposed to strictly follow the style of Petrarch and Boccaccio, a controversy flared up about the literary language, as the humanists held different points of view, to the term “volgare” (“folk”). Discussions on this topic were reflected in the association of humanists “Accademia degli Sdegnati” (1541–1545), which was joined by P. Ligorio, who, like Raphael, accompanied his studies with etymological clarifications, graphic representations and archaeological maps.

Abstract:
The evolutionary processes in the field of musical notation, which characterize the second half of the 20th century, reflected the main trend in the individualization of styles. The large-scale development of new instrumental techniques and technologies for synthesis and electronic sound processing stimulated the further development of a musical notation system as one of the means of visualizing a musical idea. Marco Stroppa, one of the leading composers of modern Europe, made significant developments in the field of graphic fixation of both new timbres and various aspects of the interaction of acoustic and electronic instruments within the framework of a mixed type composition. The interpenetration of the techniques of sound synthesis and instrumental writing as a special subject of Stroppa’s interest is reflected not only in his musical work, but also in his texts. The musicological literature in Russian about Stroppa is represented by the only article by the author of this publication, in which, for the first time, a number of aspects of Stroppa’s compositional method were analyzed using the example of the triptych “Traiettoria” for piano and computer-generated sounds, and the history of the birth of the piece was recreated. This publication focuses on the problem of notation in a mixed type composition and introduces into scientific use Stroppa’s compositional developments, implemented by him in the score “Traiettoria… deviate”, the first part of the “Traiettoria” cycle. The symbolic graphics of electronic sounds (“sound ‘objects’”) are considered, based on the composer’s commentary, such essential concepts for his workshop as a sound complex-“code”, temporal and frequency “staves” are characterized, examples of dynamic levels notation, pitch indication are presented as well as the schemes of the spatial disposition of the “synthetic orchestra” — a complex of multiple sound sources that organize the “spatial polyphony” of the piece.

The goal of this paper is to attempt an investigation of the major ethical conflicts that can emerge in the conservation of this endangered crayfish threatened by invasive competitors, introduced diseases, and landscape alteration. To assess this issue, we will employ the Ethical Matrix, in a version explicitly tailored for its use in conservation. The filled Ethical Matrix will highlight several potential conflicts between values such as environmental protection, social and economic interests, animal welfare, cultural and aesthetic value, etc. We will discuss these conflicts, alongside some potential mitigating strategies present in the literature. We will stress in particular the need to take into account the ethical principle of fairness when assessing the economic and recreational value of invasive species, especially concerning the unfair distribution of costs. Moreover, we will assert the importance of conservation of A. pallipes both for its existence value and for its role as an umbrella and keystone species. Beyond its focus on A. pallipes, the Ethical Matrix here discussed might also provide insights on the value conflicts relative to analogous in situ conservation efforts involving a native species threatened by invasive alien competitors. Abstract:
Intron evolution may be readily imaged through the combined use of the “dot plot” function of the NCBI BLAST, aligning two sequences at a time, and the Vertebrate “Multiz” alignment and conservation tool of the UCSC Genome Browser. With the NCBI BLAST, an ideal alignment of two highly conserved sequences generates a diagonal straight line in the plot from the lower left corner to the upper right corner. Gaps in this line correspond to non-conserved sections. In addition, the dot plot of the alignment of a sequence with the same sequence after the removal of the Transposable Elements (TEs) can be observed along the diagonal gaps that correspond to the sites of TE insertion. The UCSC Genome Browser can graph, along the entire sequence of a single gene, the level of overall conservation in vertebrates. This level can be compared with the conservation level of the gene in one or more selected vertebrate species. As an example, we show the graphic analysis of the intron conservation in two genes: the mitochondrial solute carrier 21 (SLC25A21) and the growth hormone receptor (GHR), whose coding sequences are conserved through vertebrates, while their introns show dramatic changes in nucleotide composition and even length. In the SLC25A21, a few short but significant nucleotide sequences are conserved in zebrafish, Xenopus and humans, and the rate of conservation steadily increases from chicken/human to mouse/human alignments. In the GHR, a less conserved gene, the earlier indication of intron conservation is a small signal in chicken/human alignment. The UCSC tool may simultaneously display the conservation level of a gene in different vertebrates, with reference to the level of overall conservation in Vertebrates. It is shown that, at least in SLC25A21, the sites of higher conservation are not always coincident in chicken and zebrafish nor are the sites of higher vertebrate conservation.

Abstract:
Tracing the history of northern slavery in a narrative exhibition at the New-York Historical Society required overcoming the silence of archival and museum collections. Despite the centrality of slavery to the colonial city, the first two centuries of black lives left few traces. In the archival record, African voices were unheard and never registered. A careful deployment of interpretive media—display techniques, audio-visual programs, graphic annotations, commissioned art objects, and architectural design—aimed to bring visitors physically and emotionally ever closer to the experience of New York blacks, while staying rooted in primary sources. The sequence of media elements thus itself paralleled the historical narrative.
