Abstract:

Abstract:
This article focuses on two indices from Geschlecht III session XIII: (1) an apparently insignificant reference to Stiegler and (2) the recourse to the concept of the engram as a trope of other grammatological figures that are more frequent in Derrida's work. By interweaving these indexes together, the article suggests that Derrida's text can be read as a noteworthy stage in his ongoing dialogue with Bernard Stiegler surrounding the question posed by human evolution to any accounts of the history of life. Along this path, the article inscribes Derrida's (en-)grammatological history of life within the line of thought that goes from Richard Semon's engram theory to Simona Ginsburg and Eva Jablonka's contemporary re-elaboration of this theory. In doing so, it argues that, although for Stiegler Derrida's grammatology aligns with biological reductionism, the latter may provide the theoretical framework for current evolutionary accounts of life as plasticity.

The basic grammatological unit (grapheme) is a universal one for all writing systems. Chữ 𡨸 is such a basic unit in Nom script. When analyzing chữ 𡨸, the basic unit of a derivative script such as Nom script, the researcher thinks that apart from attention paid to the relations to language units recorded by it, as basic units of the source writing system such as wen (文) and zi (字) in Chinese script, it is necessary for the researcher to attach importance to the corresponding relations right in this derivative writing system. The expression of chữ 𡨸 in the corresponding internal relations also needs to be taken into consideration as a documentary fact for the study of graphemes in writing systems renovated from the hieroglyphs of Chinese script in particular, as well as in grammatology in general.

Since Of Grammatology, which questions the primacy of the metaphysics of presence, Derrida understands that he cannot think without psychoanalysis. Many of his texts attest to this in an explicit manner: Spéculer – sur « Freud », Le facteur de la vérité, Freud et la scène de l’écriture, Mal d’archive: une impression freudienne, Résistances –de la psychanalyse, Pour l’amour de Lacan or Les états d’âme de la psychanalyse. Thus begins a long love story between deconstruction and psychoanalysis; a never-ending dialogue, full of tension and mutual misunderstandings, which conditioned French poststructuralist thought in the 60s.

Abstract:
AbstractThe theme of pedagogy and more generally education as supplementarity has been all but ignored in critical discussions engaging Jacques Derrida’s of grammatology. By and large, the sustained emphasis of inquiry has instead been on evaluating the epistemological and methodological parameters of deconstruction as a theory of reading and writing and not as a treatise on the ethics of pedagogical praxis. The essay rereads “... That Dangerous Supplement...,” the chapter on Rousseau on writing, while keeping the theme of pedagogy at the forefront of the analysis of supplementarity. Derrida presents for the “science of a new writing” in the “gram” that flourishes within the codic play of differences. But it is as différance that the grammatological conversion of semiology takes place via deconstruction. Such a focus provides new insights into deconstruction that could allow us to effectively gauge the edusemiotic potential of its influence on educational theory, not only as a theoretical departure from classical modes of reading and writing, but as the inaugural steps toward and beyond a theory of education that could ground an ethical praxis.

Abstract:
In the article the J. Derrida’s deconstruction interpretation is reasoned as a detonation. The deconstructor demonstrates that the strategic inflexion in a reading should be started from the tactics of rereading of already written as a «reading in between of lines». Derrida tries to revoke a «logocentric» intonation in favour of, as he thought, «grammatological» articulation. If it was true, we dealt with a field of unbounded, undivided tonation, the every in- of which had been always abrogated beforehand. However, in fact his deconstruction gives a voice those detonations, which will hardly have it as of right. When «Of grammatology» author was deconstructing texts he reread, he proceeded from «really obvious» in-tonation (there was supposed that the whole “logocentric” epoch was tuned on it), and aspired to interpret unheard before de-tonations instead of to balance in a field of tonation. It means his focal point is detonation (dispersion, scattering, burst etc.). As a result, «detonational processes» were activated in his own text too. Grammatological version of philosophy texts reading (detonation) is extrapolated on a modern learning approach. We suggest exploring the difference between the teacher-centred strategy and the learner-centred strategy. Derrida revocates «logocentric» intonation the same as he declines any subordination, which is focused mode of a lector-expertize’s voice as the only source of sense, in favour of «grammatological» articulation. In fact the deconstruction gives voice to suppressed detonation. Maximum of such diffusion allows us to acknowledge students have equal rights to be sources of sense. In West-European teaching discourse it names learner-centred strategy. The conclusion is that the new Derrida’s strategy of reading is divided on three tactic steps, two of which he could perform himself and showed to us, while he could only detect third one by his intuition and invited us to step there ourselves. The first step is the intoning as guiding lines obtaining for the next steps. Philosophy (metaphysics) is opened through traditional «intono-logical» (logocentric) reading strategy. The second step is «suspension» of intonation’s dictat for the sake of dе-tonation of the intoned (any mistake has a positive value. The third step is articulation as perfect techniques of simultaneous reading of in- and de-tonations in their inversely corresponding completeness, which opens the whole field of tonation. The model of the lack of domination promotes the learning situation as a «just play» for all participants: a freed from command role instructor just as one of equal-righted participants of learning process becomes the same learner as students. So every time they together should look for knowledge in the other way then before.

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with the Western views of Chinese characters. In Western discourses the Chinese written language has generally been viewed as a naturalistic representation of things, close to visual images (pictographs) or as a means of conveying ideas (ideographs), unrelated to spoken language. The fact that they reproduce spoken language like all other writing systems has been underexplored. Under this assumption, cultural theories have defined Chinese or Asian cultures as essentially distinct from European cultures. However, the language-independency and concreteness of Chinese script provides reason for revaluation of those views that consider the Chinese (or Asian) ways of thinking as an alternative to Western thought: that which ultimately arises from the negative judgments that those with visual concreteness are farther detached from objects, and are, therefore, unable to exercise abstract thinking. Through a critical analysis of the history of discourses of Chinese writings, this work address the following questions: Whence comes the ‘myth ''of the Chinese character, which, in turn, reinforces the Western views of Asia: why it remains so persistent in Western views as observed in contemporary cultural theories; how the ambivalent appreciation of Chinese or East Asian-culture resulted from the same ideographic view of the Chinese written language.

Torrens, Antoine.

Full text
Abstract:
Transliteration is the transcription sign by sign from a writing system to another. Being a matter of history, linguistics and study of writing systems – or grammatology – this work aims at identifying the issues of the quite recent notion of transliteration, as applied to a period when it was not formulated in this way, the French Renaissance. It delineates the respective fields of transliteration, transcription, translation and code-switching. This thesis takes as a starting point the recent findings on Hebrew in the French humanism and makes use of the advances in archeology and in cognitive science regarding the history of the Latin alphabet and its understanding by its users. It relies on a corpus of alphabets, grammars and bibles of the 16th century to link the diachronic and diatopic dimensions of writing systems. It shows that conversion of scripts as a practice relies less on the specific features of the source script than on a considerable extension of the target script

Thuault, Simon. Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017MON30040.

Full text
Abstract:
The peculiarity called “dissimilation graphique” is recurrent in Egyptian writing systems, particularly during Old Kingdom (Dyn. III-VI, ca. 2700-2150 BC). At this time, plurality (grammatical and lexical) is indicated by the threefold of semograms, signs that have a semantic value and allow to understand the lexemes. Thus, if ideograms and classifiers are ordinary reproduced three times identically, “dissimilation” refers to occurrences where these three signs are different. For example, if bAk.w, “servants”, is usually followed by three men, in case of dissimilation, one of them can be replaced by a woman. In the same way, if mHy.t, “fish”, habitually takes three identical fish, a dissimilated version will show three different species. This Ph.D Thesis aims to analyse in a systematic way the process of “dissimilation graphique”, mostly found in hieroglyphic inscriptions of royal and private tombs, but also in some hieratic documents. Through this study, the supposed reasons of dissimilation are exposed. Consequently, Egyptian classification is newly enlightened. Moreover, in examining a great number of Old Kingdom texts, new analysis of the signs functions are proposed to clarify some unclear elements of egyptological Linguistics

Wheat, Christopher A. "Derrida's Objection To The Metaphysical Tradition." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1188.

Abstract:
Derrida’s deconstruction of the philosophic tradition shows us not only the importance of pursuit of knowledge, but also the importance of questioning the assumptions on which such a pursuit is based. He argues that the metaphysical tradition is built from the privileging of the logos (speech, thought, and logic,) over it’s opposite, and while Derrida does not object to the societal results of such a privileging, he questions why we allow ourselves to make such an assumption in the investigation of the origin event, and in the nature of reality. I chose to study deconstruction because through the course of my studies at Claremont I found myself raising similar objections to the philosophic tradition, and have a great interest in the arts and culture resulting from deconstructionist philosophy. Through my study I’ve learned to better examine not only the reasons for my own interest in philosophy and the arts, but the importance (or un-importance) of such a pursuit. I believe Derrida’s work could be important in teaching us the absurdity of sacred pursuit, and the importance of finding said sacredness in everything.

Abstract:
The first part of the thesis presents the theorical concepts of ancient chinese grammatology and a critical investigation into traaditionnal and modern approaches to ancient chinese script. The second part proposes a number of systematic grammatological applications for the corpus of the three inscribed bronze vessels of zhongshan these application will be defined by two leading questions : a) what are the main principles of the development of chineses writing during the warring-states period?. B) what is the signification of standarddized writing begining under the qin dynasty ? the third part gives the references for the history of the lord state of zhongshan, a short lexicometrical analysis, and an annotated translation of the three inscriptions. The work leads to the elaboration of a typology of ancient chinese characters and its systematic application to paleographical documents. Our typology is linked with what can be restitued of the zhou qin phonoligal system. Lastly, it provides a comparison of zhongshan writing with the normalised script as opreserved in the shuowenjiezi. This comparison shows that the classical script has barrowed more from the eastern zhou local writing systems than one has ggenerally granted. A final index gives the meanings, equivalences and all occurrences of each character of the corpus

Abstract:
The aim of this work is twofold. First, we focus on the projects of ontogenesis and grammatology, formulated by G. Simondon in 1958 and by J. Derrida in 1967, we situate them in their theoretical context and we evaluate their metaphysical and epistemological stakes (we try to show that a new way of thinking is appearing, after the end of Western metaphysics) ;Secondly, we focus on the theoretical consequences of Simondon’s and Derrida’s thought, particularly on the questions of human and technics (we try to show that they both open a way beyond humanism and reductionism by rethinking the links between life, technics and mind or spirit). We finally try to revive Simondon’s and Derrida’s reflections in the contemporary technical context, in order to open new perspectives on the anthropological and social consequences of the current digital transformations

Ljunggren, Rhonda L. "Camera lucida : the moving image as evocative document : film form, film meaning and the grammatology of archival selection." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25714.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the characteristics of moving image documents such as they pertain to the selection of films for archival preservation. It is advanced that both the physical nature of the film record and the nature of the evidence it presents are prime considerations in the development of archival selection criteria. Furthermore it is argued that the structure and content of film are interrelated factors which impact significantly upon the determination of archival value, and the suitability of the film record for permanent preservation. Finally, a major factor affecting selection involves accounting for the impact of film as a reflector and purveyor of popular culture. Given the powerful influence of film in moulding popular ideas, attitudes, and value systems, archival selection criteria must take into account film of all types if there is to be any future prospect of assessing the impact of film on society in a given period. The sources used for this study include the writings of historians and archivists concerning film as historical evidence and the archival selection thereof, as well as traditional film literature. The study proceeds from a consideration of the technical and structural aspects of film to a content-oriented discussion involving the reflective and influential nature of the moving image document. Archival selection is considered in terms of its necessity and justifiability with regard to the nature of the film record, and alternative modes of selection are investigated.

Abstract:
In chapter 5, I consider the essential connection between generalised writing and plasticity (qua modifiability and retention). The trace, I argued in the previous chapter, is defined by an origin- less and indefinite retention and modification. Speculative grammatology consists in the generalisation of memory or mnemonic form. The materiality of the trace, then, refers not to any substrate (of the graphic trace) but to the essential modifiability of textual structures. Modifiable texts retain heterogeneous texts. To demonstrate the productivity and pertinence of this account of arche-writing, I consider several grammatological descriptions of organic and material processes (including tree rings, organic recording devices more generally, and neurological memory trace). In the second part of the chapter, I consider the extent to which plasticity may mark the speculative limits of grammatology. While plasticity is the condition of mnemonic form, it may not be exclusively mnemonic. Catherine Malabou argues that the mnemonic ‘productivity’ of the trace obscures the destructive powers of plasticity. While Malabou’s critique is directed at neurological accounts of the ‘non-graphic’ trace, its force bears equally upon the grammatological account of arche- writing that I have reconstructed.
