Abstract:
From its inception in 2012, the Dissertation and Thesis Bootcamp at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has included a library component. Unfortunately, librarians were used more as computer technicians, assisting students with technological access issues and occasional citation help, than as information specialists. In Spring 2015, the new Graduate Librarian and the Distance Education Librarian proposed significantly expanding the librarian's role in the program by adding targeted workshops to address physical and virtual workspace organization and research strategies. In the exit surveys for Boot camp, students have expressed high ratings and appreciation for these formal library instruction opportunities. Familiarity with the embedded librarians greatly increased the interaction between students and librarians, allowing for timely, point of need interventions during boot camp, as well as continued personal consulatations afterwards. This infographic-based poster will use graphed data, linear progression and photographs to showcase the different function performed by the librarians embedded in bootcamp. It will clearly and systematically demonstrate visually how what began as a teaching research and data management skills improved student ability and confidence and progressed to one-on-one and group sessions. This case study will provide inspiration and guidelines to help others reproduce our success. Links to the content of our workshops will also be available.

Michael, Dass Paula L. "Attention to retention: Implications of institutional practices of four-year colleges and universities on graduation rates of students with ADHD." UNF Digital Commons, 2019. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/888.

Full text
Abstract:
Advances in medication and support services in high schools have influenced the growing number of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) enrolling in colleges and universities. Unfortunately, their lower graduation rates and extended time to graduation creates multiple challenges to themselves, their institution’s, and their communities. Limited information is available regarding how disability services impact graduation rates for students with ADHD in higher education. More information is needed about how the practices instituted by disability support center leaders in post-secondary institution’s impact the graduation rates of students with ADHD. Retention, a financial and ethical concern for universities, is pushed to the forefront by lawmakers who demand an increased return on their state’s educational investment. Disability resource directors, school registrar officials, and disability resource center websites were data sources. Information was gathered about the number of students with ADHD that have graduated from each institution over the past three years. A non-experimental quantitative design (correlation) was used that provided a process for gathering information about use of disability services, which was then correlated and compared to the overall graduation rate of college students with ADHD over a three-year period. Qualitative information regarding types of services highlighted commonly used services and responses from directors were discussed regarding collaborative partnerships and training for faculty and staff. A positive correlation between use of services and graduation rate was found from examining one school that submitted complete data. Overall, the response rate was low, particularly for the colleges, which impacted the ability to respond to some of the research questions. Some directors noted a preference for the social theory of retention in support of why they don’t collect data on specific groups of students with disabilities, while others chose to not participate at all due to a lack of data tracking. Because funding for programming and targeted services depend on knowledge gained from data tracking, these findings may have implications for policy and practice. Educational leaders may be able to utilize the results of this study to shape future institutional policies and practices that impact the success of their students.

This study has as an object of analysis the dissertations and thesis developed in the Post Graduation Program in Special Education of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos (PPGEEs/UFSCar), from 1981 to 2002. Its general aim is to analyse, from the methodological approaches, the epistemological implications of the dissertations and thesis produced, considering their inter-relations with the social-political and economical factors. In this perspective, we tried to explicit how these factors stablish contact with the dissertations and thesis presented in PPGEEs/UFSCar. This theoretical-methodological procedure implied in the search of dynamic articulation of internal analyses (logical- gnoseological and methodological) and external (historical-social), of the investigated production. In the 27 analysed documents, 88,9% of them adopted the empirical-analytical approach, which were predominant in all the four phases of curricular organization of the Program. The phenomenological-hermeneutical researches represented 11,1% of the sample. Meanwhile, the critical-dialectical approach was not adopted in any of the analysed studies. We noted that, in spite of some variations, commom epistemological assumptions are presented in the criteria of cientificity which are the basis of the researches, in the manners they relate subject and object in the cognitive process of knowledge, and in the conceptions of casuality, science, human being, history, reality, education/special education and deficiency, according to the methodological approach which guide them. We verify that in the empirical-analytical researches, the dominant understanding of science is related to the principles of quantification and mathematization of the phenomena. Based in the statistical parameters, in the search for objectivity of the knowledge, in the distance from the researcher to the object of study, among other characteristics that point to a view of science centred to the positivist vertent. In the other hand, for the phenomenological-hermeneutical researches, the science consists in the comprehension of phenomena, from the collected data in many manifestations, in the elucidation of unclear mechanisms, of implications, of contexts in which these phenomena are based. The researches of this group do not trust in the immediate percpetion of object that only promote the appearence. However, from that perception and through the interpretation, the essence of the phenomena is discovered. The phenomenological-hermeneutical researches have as their main criteria of scientific validation, the interpretative reflection of the researcher supported by the intersubjective consensus (philosophical principles of phenomology-hermeneutic). Considering the articulations between the logical and the historical, we verifiy the predominance of empirical-analytical approach in the analysed documents and it is related to social-political and economical factors, specially, to the Post graduation implanted in the country, as well, with the internal characteristics of PPGEEs/UFSCar, mainly, by the epistemological matrix predominant in the Departament of Psychology, responsible for the orientation of activities which are developed by the Program. From the concrete possibilities of changes in the structure and in the internal relations of the PPGEEs/UFSCar, as well as the relevance and the social commitment that it performs in relation to the qualitative progress of the produced knowledge in the Brazilian Special Education, it suggested that the ways for the formation of researcher about the theoretical, philosophical and epistemological of scientific research would be amplied and diversified. That has the objective of supplying elements so that the knowledge produced in the Special Education, may be understood in a wider way, and mainly, contribute for the superation of numerous problems existents in the reality of people with special educational needs.

Abstract:
In the study, I assessed the persistence of students who joined fraternities at Western Kentucky University. Also included is a comparison between them and the general student population. The study includes 1467 students who joined fraternities between the Fall 1986 to Spring 1991 semesters. A five-year time period was used as the benchmark for graduation from the institution. Factors that were explored included race, initiation status, year in school when pledging, and organizational affiliation. Pearson Product-Moment Correlations and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data. The results illustrated that students who join fraternities graduate at a higher percentage than the general student population. Black students who join fraternities graduate at a significantly higher percentage than black students who do not join. Pledge Year and Initiation Status proved to be significant factors.

Gellera, Giovanni. "Natural philosophy in the graduation theses of the Scottish universities in the first half of the seventeenth century." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3285/.

Full text
Abstract:
The graduation theses of the Scottish universities in the first half of the seventeenth century are at the crossroads of philosophical and historical events of fundamental importance: Renaissance and Humanist philosophy, Scholastic and modern philosophy, Reformation and Counterreformation, the rise of modern science. The struggle among these tendencies shaped the culture of the seventeenth century. Graduation theses are a product of the Scholasticism of the modern age, which survived the Reformation in Scotland and decisively influenced Scottish philosophy in the seventeenth century, including the reception of early modern philosophy. We can therefore speak of a ‘Scottish Scholasticism’, characterised by an original reception and interpretation of the long traditions of Scholastic philosophy and Aristotelianism. The aim of the thesis is the analysis of the general physics of the graduation theses: the two central theories are prime matter and movement. Natural philosophy is a particularly interesting case, and the main features of the graduation theses are the reception of Scholasticism alongside innovation within Scholasticism. Graduation theses adhere to the Scholastic tradition, especially Scotism, while being innovative in their opposition to Catholic forms of Scholasticism. Scottish Scholasticism can be then further qualified as an example of ‘Reformed Scholasticism’.

Cummings, Andrea Marie. "The Impact of Student Support Services on Academic Success at a Select Historically Black College and University." UNF Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/532.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine and examine the impact of student support services (SSS) on academic success at a historically black college. The study was grounded in the theoretical framework of Astin’s Input-Environment-Outcome Model (IEO), Scholssberg’s theory of marginality, holistic theory , facilitation theory, and the theory of sensory simulation (Dunn, 2002; Anderson et. al., 2011; Dennick, 2014 and Pritchard, 2013) A mixed method approach was used to quantify and explicate triangulated data, which included the N-LSSI survey, archival data, and focus group interviews. The N-LSSI survey used a 7-point Likert Scale, and students from The College completed the instrument. The longitudinal nature of the study meant that the assumption of independent observations required by ANOVA was violated. Therefore, I used MANOVA to analyze SSS and Non-SSS student academic achievement data (i.e., GPA, Accuplacer test scores). This analysis also determined whether significant differences existed between the SSS and Non-SSS student participant groups based on means of the predictors. Qualitative data were organized, evaluated, and interpreted using open, axial and selective coding with MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis software program. The results of the analyses showed there were no significant differences between the two student groups relative to GPAs. In contrast, Accuplacer math scores, reading scores, and writing scores were significantly different. The retention differences between SSS and Non-SSS students were significant in 2011 and 2012, while graduation data revealed significant differences in 2012. Results from the N-LSSI survey produced no significant difference between SSS and Non-SSS satisfaction with The College, while focus group interviews revealed student satisfaction levels were virtually the same.

Schilke, Justin. "Overcoming Educational Stratification: Effect of Athletic Status and Race on Odds of Graduating at Western Kentucky University." TopSCHOLAR®, 2012. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1142.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the effect of stratification on graduation at Western Kentucky University, a master’s level regional Division I Football Bowl Subdivision university in the South. The study begins by examining the historical basis of stratification in sport and higher education, and hypothesizes that becoming an intercollegiate athlete can eliminate the effect of being African American on graduation, which is generally negative and can be seen in lower graduation rates for African Americans compared to other populations. Using a data set that included 18,966 students, logistic regression was used to assess: 1) the effect of race on sport profile and 2) the effect of race and athletic status on graduation, controlling for sex, high school GPA, pre-collegiate standardized test scores, and department of academic major. Results indicate that African American students have 771 percent greater odds of participating in high profile sports compared to low profile sports, which supports the literature that sport is stratified in such a way that African Americans are more likely to bear a disproportionate load in revenue-producing sports. Even so, when interacting sport profile, athlete, and race, the penalty on graduation for being African American is eliminated, and African American athletes have the same odds of graduating as white non-athletes.

Abstract:
This research analyzes the decision process of high school seniors in their postgraduation plans. Most of the participants are college bound, so students were compared and analyzed according to their preparedness for college as measured by the ACT. It seems that students go to college whether or not they are actually prepared for the experience. They seem to be more influenced by a societal push towards attending college than by anything else.

Abstract:
Higher education is in a state of transformation, with the economic recession leading to an even greater emphasis on graduate outcomes. Existing UK-wide research suggests that graduate opportunities are influenced by pre-entry characteristics; institution attended and subject studied, as well as the individual’s store of social capital. The research for this study uses data from a cohort of graduates in North Wales to explore the issues in further detail. The mixed methods design compares secondary data on access, student experience and destinations with original survey and interview data. A critique of the current emphasis on graduate outcomes six months after graduation leads to a focus on longer-term trajectories. The results from graduates from four different types of degree awarding institutions and three specific subjects – chosen for contrast and convenience – reveal both similarities and differences compared with existing studies. Whilst the findings support existing research on pre-entry factors, they also indicate that regional assets e.g. Welsh language skills, access to transport and local networks, influence the patterns of subsequent trajectories. The more biographical and extended longitudinal approach contributes to the literature on graduates by providing an analytical typology of their post-graduation trajectories. It also contributes to Bourdieu-inspired theoretical discussion of inequalities in higher education and beyond. The study has implications for policy and practice in universities, careers services and the Higher Educational Statistics Agency (HESA).

Abstract:
In 2008, the excitement to teach the class, Introduction to College to new students who are beginning college, was greatly accepted with much reservation. Numerous memories reflected back to that special period when the writer was faced with those daunting decisions of where to attend college. Those memories of excitement and fear of being away from home the very first time, starting college life, meeting new friends, and what career path to choose, were difficult decisions during that transitional time. Orientation class back then consisted mainly of a half day spent touring the college campus and listening to various speakers; if you could stay awake. The scope of this study will be to assess the effectiveness of Introduction to College (GE-100), on student GPAs and “persistence-to-graduation” rates as measures of success. In the course, the student will learn about the variety of support services available at the college, the behaviors necessary to be successful in college, and issues that relate to choice of major and/or careers. This study used a quantitative approach utilizing an ex-post facto longitudinal design that measures student grade point averages (GPA) and persistence-to-graduation rates for the five- year period from the Fall Semester of 2003 through the Spring Semester of 2008. Overall, at the conclusion, the results indicated that GE-100 students had significantly higher GPAs and significantly greater persistence- to-graduation rates over a five year period when compared with student who did not take or complete (GE- 100).

This research aims at discussing the setbacks and difficulties of Math teachers from Secondary School II at their initial careers. This paper also analyzed the subjects taken during all the teaching process to face these difficulties taking into account the problems the teachers face at beginning of their careers, this paper pried to answer the following questions: (i) Which are the main problems and difficulties highlighted by teachers from Secondary School II at the beginning of their careers on a daily basis? (ii) How do teachers face these difficulties? (iii) What role does the knowledge taken during the learning process play to face these setbacks? This study was supported by Huberman s analyses about the life cycle of the teachers and, more detailed, about the first steps in the teaching process of the teachers. It was adapted a qualitative approach including descriptive and interpretative methods. The data gathering was performed by the means of intensive interviews with six Math teachers from Secondary School II from the scratch of their careers, taking into account the following parameters: profession expectation, ideal/ real impact; support and school scenario, teaching relationship; teacher-student relationship; school material and autonomy. From this point of view it was possible to detect some difficulties that the beginning teacher faces like of support from the owners, coworkers and family, as well as indiscipline and luck of drive from students. The role of the subjects seemed to have little impact in facing the difficulties and setbacks at the beginning of the career of these teachers

Mama PingPong Social Club is about a woman who suffers from empty nest syndrome tries to face her family life after being drastically transformed into a “monster.” The purpose of this film origins from the researcher’s own experience. Mama PingPong Social Club, which actually does exist in reality, reminds the researcher of his mother, who is also an empty nester in climacteric state. Through the theme “Love should neither be dominant nor violent,” the researcher tries to explore subjects like the roles of female in their family and their middle age psychology through researches related to Taoism, female psychology, and female sociology, hoping to picture the family status of mothers, emotional changes during menopause, and family relationship. This film is also analyzed and compared with another subject related film: Child’s Pose.

This research also gives a clear view of the production of Mama PingPong Social Club. What is revealed are as below: the details of how the script was written and decided, how the characters and plots were changed again and again after in-depth interviews and rehearsals, how the camera was moved, how the art designs created scenes to form a “sticky” bond between the mother character and her home, how the special effects and makeups presented the mysterious setup of vampires, and how the dub up and music inserted elements of Taiwanese culture into a vampire movie. The researcher combined suggestions from judges, feedbacks from the audience, comments from respectful teachers: Tung Wang, Ching-Sung Liao, Chen-Ching Lei, and Shiang-Chyi Chen as points for improvement. In the final part, advice for future works are given. Lessons learned from the filmmaking of Mama PingPong Social Club are mentors and boosters, which provide great expectation to future film works.
