Abstract:
Abstract This book provides a comprehensive discussion of women, leisure, and tourism through the lens of leisure production and consumption, both by women and for women. Specifically, this text includes a multicultural perspective highlighting the unique attributes leisure brings to women, the role of women in leisure entrepreneurship, and the creation of supportive, inclusive environments to enhance female well-being through the examination of these activities in often overlooked populations. The diversity of women's leisure and tourism practices is best perceived through the links between various leisure practices (e.g., sport, outdoor recreation, travel and tourism, learning, crafts, events, and family leisure), as well as an understanding of leisure production and consumption across cultures and life stages. Chapters bring to the forefront many of the challenges inherent in providing and experiencing leisure and tourism that support the diverse needs of women, as well as a look at female innovation that is also often overlooked in leisure research. This multi-disciplinary book includes examples of both applied and conceptual chapters from global perspectives in academic studies, which will be useful for academics and graduate students of tourism, leisure and gender studies.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Marga Richter's success with her modern dance scores and MGM music recordings during the period 1951–1960. After graduating from Julliard Graduate School, Richter moved to an apartment on 308 West 107th Street. In New York City, she was able to attend fine traditional and new music concerts, visit museums, and partake in the cultural life of the city. However, earning a living was a significant concern. Fortunately, Richter's music had drawn the attention of choreographer James Waring. This chapter first considers Richter's studies in New York and her marriage to Alan Skelly before turning to her early modern dance, piano, and orchestral works as well as compositions for children. It also examines Richter's beliefs and views on women's roles, along with her teaching pieces. Finally, it looks at Richter's concert music compositions commissioned by Edward Cole for recording by MGM, including Sonata for Piano (1954), Lament for string orchestra (1956), and Aria and Toccata for viola and string orchestra (1957).

Abstract:
In a collection of compelling contributions to the study of the nexus between race, crime, and justice, noted scholars in the field critique many long-held assumptions and myths about race, challenging criminal justice policymakers to develop new and effective strategies for dealing with the social problems such misunderstandings create. In sections devoted to criminological theory, law enforcement, courts and the law, juvenile delinquency, and gender, contributors endeavor to dispel myths about African-American involvement in the criminal justice system. In so doing, a number of important facts are established about the race/crime nexus. For example, in an analysis of criminological theory, it is concluded that race, as a singular social factor, has not been adequately represented in existing paradigms. The subject of police profiling of African-Americans reveals an evolution of court decisions that have marginalized, rather than liberated, African-Americans since slavery. Each contributor challenges both the reader and the criminal justice system to develop meaningful strategies for addressing the racism that still pervades our system of justice. A chapter on women of color in prison makes a compelling argument that such institutions often represent safer environments than the life on the streets women leave behind. This persuasive volume will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty in Sociology, Criminal Justice, policy development, African-American and Women's Studies.
