Chambers, Kateri. "The evolution of grace: tracing the development of petite graces ornamentation." Thesis, Boston University, 2008. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/30649.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston University
This dissertation examines the evolution of French vocal ornamentation. Ornaments (agrements or petites graces) were often marked by composers with the use of a symbol instead of being fully notated. Prior to the codification of this stenographic system, the gestural shapes they would come to represent were used. The admixture of shorthand agrement signs and full notation for ornamental gestures was due in part to the unwritten tradition of improvisation, transition from Renaissance to Baroque musical styles, and the inchoate state of printing. This dissertation traces the development of the petite grace system: The primary focus is secular vocal music from 1570 to 1702. Particular attention is given to airs de cours, vaudevilles, airs and chansons for boire and danser, and the contrasting airs serieux. To provide a wider overview of contemporary ornamentation and performance practices in France, sacred and secular vocal music 1527-1594, compositions by related foreign composers 1528-1702, general music and vocal treatises 1603-1736, and instrumental treatises and front matter 1583-1720 are surveyed. This chronological examination of the nascent petites graces yields a cursory look over a wide range of material. The first precursor melodic shapes appear in France by 1528, descriptions appear in 1603, and the first signed agrements in 1615. This dissertation provides a compendium of material; pinpoints the emergence of signs, descriptions, and agrement musical appearances outside treatises; and summarizes the trends of each petite grace.

Klein, Kathrine Mercedes. "Grace Aguilar's historical romances." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2009. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/498.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation looks critically at Grace Aguilar’s historical romance novels and short stories, and investigates English writers’ uses of history in early- to mid-nineteenth century fiction. Shifting the current critical emphasis on Aguilar’s Jewish texts, I have analyzed the ways in which Aguilar revises the genres of the national tale, the gothic romance, and the medieval romance in order to demonstrate her participation in the construction of nineteenth-century domestic values. In Chapter One, I introduce to critical debate Aguilar’s juvenilia, relying on unpublished manuscripts and novels published only in the twentieth century to establish the origins of Aguilar’s interest in history and historical writing. Locating Aguilar’s narrative style in the early nineteenth-century national tale, I show that as a child Aguilar envisioned the English and Scottish nations as a family, making domesticity both a private and a public—a female and a male—value. Chapter Two focuses on Aguilar’s use of history to express nineteenth-century domestic ideals in her version of the gothic romance. Deploying the setting of the Catholic Inquisition in Spain and Portugal, Aguilar writes gothic tales that unite Jewish and Protestant gender values. She makes heroic the Jewish female martyr to suggest not only that nineteenth-century Protestants and Jews share similar domestic principles, but also that Jewish women could be seen as ideal models for Protestant women. Finally, in Chapter Three I explore Aguilar’s participation in the nineteenth-century medievalist tradition by reflecting on her revision of nineteenth-century literary idealizations of the Middle Ages. In these short stories, Aguilar fictionalizes the sixteenth-century European chivalric ethos, looking critically at the role of women in court society at the end of the Middle Ages. Deploying the tropes prevalent in popular nineteenth-century anti-medievalist fiction, Aguilar debunks celebrations of the Middle Ages by showing how chivalry is antagonistic to nineteenth-century domesticity.

Feng, Martha. "The Grace of Grief." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10255963.

Full text
Abstract:

This hermeneutic dissertation examines clinical and theoretical materials from depth psychology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, religion, and literature to understand the role of literal and symbolic death among key thinkers in depth psychology, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and James Hillman. Beginning with the Freud-Jung separation, then moving into the postmodern era with the arrival of James Hillman’s archetypal psychology, it explores the collective wound that informed the development of linear models to address grief, as well as minimal education and sparse clinical training on the intricate facets of grief. Although the experience of grief and the manner in which one grieves may be unique to the individual, they are influenced by relational, cultural, and spiritual beliefs. Technological advances have increased exposure to global incidences of death and grief, but this has not led to a reduction in denial and avoidance: they remain prominent Western defenses. Therefore, paradigm shifts that include new approaches to grieving which honor the individual and collective soul, interdisciplinary dialogue, and an ongoing relationship with the dead are essential to humanity and our well-being.

Keywords: Grief; bereavement; postmodern mourning; Freud/Jung/Hillman; spirituality; aesthetic; depth psychology; hermeneutic.

Abstract:
Societal structure has changed through the decades to reflect a contemporary interest in youth culture. The nuclear family, where generations lived under one roof no longer exists, leaving the elderly on the periphery of the family structure. Where once grandparents, parents and children all cohabitated, now the oldest family members are relegated to solitary retirement and aging alone. Studies have shown that "depression in the elderly is more likely to lead to suicide. Elderlywhite men are at greatest risk, with suicide rates in people ages 80 to 84 more than twice that of the general population. The National Institute of Mental Health considers depression in people age 65 and older to be a major public health problem." (http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/depression/elderly.asp)Providing social activity for seniors can increase their well being and by extension their physicalhealth. The Grace Street Senior Center was designed to accommodate a variety of social activities for the center's members as well as house the center's administration. The member areas range in function from the public, for example, a multi-function area for dance and aerobic classes to the private such as the reading area and music room. All the spaces within the scope of this project are designed with the comfort and well being of the users paramount.

Steiner, Stefan. "Grace Hospital computer simulation model." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27638.

Full text
Abstract:
A simulation model, written in GPSS/H, was created to study utilization of Grace Hospital, a special-purpose maternity hospital. The model assumes that a patient's transfers and length of stay depend only on her present location and classification, and not on any past history. The model includes a sophisticated overflow policy, and allows the factors used to govern a patient's transfers and length of stay to depend on her treatment stage. Also, to more accurately simulate the mid-morning peak load in the hospital, the length of stay in Postpartum depends on a patient's arrival time in Postpartum. The average census, and the number of patient-days spent in inappropriate units or lost due to overcrowding are determined for several future scenarios. It was concluded that Grace is running very close to capacity, and must continue to limit the number of admissions allowed. In addition, an early discharge program was shown to be very effective in alleviating the overcrowding.

Lane, Stephen John. "Jack Clemo : cartographer of grace." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/564.

Full text
Abstract:
JACK CLEMO: CARTOGRAPHER OF GRACE is an interpretative study of the novels and poetry of Jack Clemo. Chapter One traces, through published biographical material, the main personal influences upon the development of his vision. Chapters Two to Four show how ideas which first found publication in his published poetry only after 1951 had developed over a period of twenty years. The material for these chapters (mainly unpublished novels and juvenile poetry) was kindly loaned to the author by Mr Clemo. The published novels and first collection of verses are studied in the four following chapters, where it becomes clear that Clemo's initial, distinctive Calvinist view of life shows striking similarities with the neo-orthodox writings of Karl Earth (whom he had not then read) and the post-Barthian Jurgen Moltmann (whom Clemo has never read). These chapters offer an interpretation of Clemo's Calvinist vision and show it to be both theologically sound and, in terms of literature, unique. Clemo's contribution, it is seen, is in terms of his metaphoric use of landscape in a sustained refutation of the case for a natural theology; this, and his personal adaptation of the idea of election inspired by his admiration for Robert Browning. Substantial changes of poetic technique appear in the collection Cactus on Carmel, and these, and their sources, are accounted for in Chapter Nine. Chapters Ten to Twelve trace the development of Clemo's poetry away from its pre-occupation with the landscape of South- East Cornwall, the expansion of genre to include portraiture and dramatic monologue, and account for these developments in terms of Clemo's life-long determination to marry. This determination is seen to be the most important influence upon Clemo's life, shaping all the work he has produced. Chapter Thirteen examines the poetry in which Clemo challenges head on the materialism of the century. The final chapter is a detailed study of the worksheets of poems Clemo wrote over some twenty five years, and thus compares the processes of production adopted after the poet became blind with those employed earlier.

Dearborn, Timothy A. "The trinitarian nature of grace." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1988. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk/R?func=search-advanced-go&find_code1=WSN&request1=AAIU011900.

Full text
Abstract:
1. The traditional soteriological debate between advocates of dogmatic dualism and dogmatic universalism has not adequately reflected the trinitarian nature of God. 2. Inadequate doctrines of grace, for example as God's decree, God's cosmic power, God's attitude of acceptance, or God's sacramentally infused presence emerge from the failure to develop the implications of the doctrine of the Trinity. 3. Viewed from a trinitarian perspective, grace is best understood as the very being of God in triune communion. Understood from this relational context, grace is also God's act in Christ to adopt humanity into participation in that communion, through the Spirit in the Son with the Father. 4. The terms used by the Patristic Fathers to understand the nature of the Incarnation and the Trinity such as the homoousion, hypostasis, and perichoresis are integral to clarifying the bilateral nature of Christ's mediation: in him is God's response to humanity, and the perfect response of humanity to God. This in turn, sheds essential insight into the nature of grace and the role of humanity's response of faith in salvation. 5. From this perspective of the bilateral mediation of Christ, the Biblical and trinitarian inadequacies of dogmatic dualism and universalism become apparent. Furthermore, an alternative understanding of humanity's destiny emerges which affirms the truth in both biblical dualism and universalism. 6. This provides a context for approaching the Concluding soteriological question: How does God respond to people who have never professed faith in Christ? The trinitarian nature of grace guides the Church to live with a gracious, hopeful urgency as it responds to those who are not yet Christians.

Ingram, Btheol Virginia. "Grace: Free, costly, or cheap?" Thesis, Ingram Btheol, Virginia (2011) Grace: Free, costly, or cheap? Honours thesis, Murdoch University, 2011. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/6213/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the concept of cheap and costly grace in Discipleship within the context of Bonhoeffer’s theological, and historical background. I shall argue that cheap grace is not grace but rather an ironic statement that Bonhoeffer created in reaction to Lutheran theologians who denied the role of works as a necessary response to faith. Bonhoeffer believed that these Lutherans centred their theology on traditions and Creeds, rather than accepting Christ’s call to discipleship, and neighbourly love. Costly grace, in contrast to cheap grasp is characterised by faith which is active in obedience to Christ. Bonhoeffer calls costly grace the call to discipleship, and expects Christians to accept the operational consequences of obedience. These consequences are suffering, persecution, and possibly even martyrdom. However, costly grace is not only a call to action. Costly grace is grace, which means that a Christian comes closer to God, and the truth of their existence through living a life of obedience and discipleship. However, Bonhoeffer’s theology of costly grace is not without criticism; and I will propose that Bonhoeffer’s treatise of ‘Costly Grace’ is lacking an adequate theology of the Holy Spirit, overly Christocentric, and can be accused of taking away the central Reformation tenet of grace as a gift. I will propose that all of these criticisms can be explained by Bonhoeffer’s life setting. For example, a lack of Pneumatology, and an overly represented Christology was a product of Bonhoeffer Lutheran background and the Christocentric theology of the day. Moreover, it can be argued that Bonhoeffer’s belief that faith must be expressed in concrete acts of obedience was a product of what Bonhoeffer perceived as the need of the church, at a time when Nationalism, and Germanism had overtaken Christian beliefs.

Grace, Jennifer Elizabeth. "The representation of dogs as family in contemporary American documentary film." Thesis, Montana State University, 2010. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2010/grace/GraceJ0810.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The American family dog is a social construct that blurs the ontological boundaries of nature/culture dualism and which contemporary American documentary filmmakers represent by employing alternate tropes of 'dog as human' and 'dog as animal.' In filmic and practical use, these tropes are in flux and are confusing. The position of the dog as a paradox of nature and culture and member of the contemporary inter-species family makes the decision to euthanize it ethically challenging. Non-fiction dog programming is more popular than ever and most shows employ the 'dog as human' trope. But few address at what point that trope breaks down and how to find the line between 'dog as human' and 'dog as animal' when making ethical decisions for dogs. I will prove this by describing movies like Why We Love Cats and Dogs (Ellen Goosenberg Kent 2009) that rely on removed experts to explain the how humans are similar to dogs and those like Shelter Dogs (Cynthia Wade 2003) that follow devastating moments of loss with cheery depictions of renewal. My thesis film Soul Dog instead dives into the deep emotional conflict that many of us face in a society where dogs have become surrogate for family. Using personal subjective storytelling techniques like that in Sherman's March (McElwee 1986) and quirky vox pop interviews similar to those in Gates of Heaven, (Morris 1978) I focus on the personal stories and popular wisdom that influence our actions.

Haynes, Daniel. "Grace and metaphysics in Maximus Confessor." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12450/.

Full text
Abstract:
Post-Tridentine Western Christian theology introduced the notion of natura pura, which holds that one can know created nature in fact without reference to God or divine grace. The orders of grace and nature are thus on different plains. This ontology creates an extrincism between God and the world. Maximus Confessor’s doctrine of grace offers the paradox of nature already presuming grace but awaiting the supernatural grace of deification at the resurrection. Further, divine grace, or energy in Maximus’s theology, are not separate ontological realms between God and the world. Grace does not separate God’s essence from his energies. The Incarnation of the created and uncreated natures in Christ fully manifests the paradox of God’s grace as being fully on the side of creation and on the side of God, without remainder. Finally, Maximus’s theurgic ecclesiology in his Mystagogy reinforces the mediation of grace through created reality. All of these aspects of Maximus the Confessor’s theology of grace provide a Christian rendering of participation that does not result in the extrincism of grace from nature, their conflation together, or a real distinction in the being of God.

Ruben, Mel. "Grace under pressure : re-reading Giselle." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1998. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/59558/.

Full text
Abstract:
'Grace Under Pressure: Re-reading Giselle' is a close reading of the Romantic ballet Giselle (1841) , focusing on the Birmingham Royal Ballet production of 3 March 1992. The Preface provides a personal introduction, and notes the status of ballet within dance studies and the academy. It also observes that in choosing Giselle as a text one is required to reassess the historical treatment of emotion and beauty within academic feminism. Chapter One gives an historical background to Giselle, a literature review and a methodological overview. Ballet has received relatively little attention from the academy in comparison with other performing arts. Whilst dance scholarship is a growth area in the university, ballet remains neglected. Hence, in order to bring theory across from areas of greater academic activity, this thesis is structured around textual juxtaposition. Thus Chapter Two compares the plot of Giselle with that of the film Blade Runner, and Chapter Three compares the movement of Giselle with that in the book SEX by Madonna. These comparative texts were also first viewed in 1992: whilst Giselle is usually categorized as 'High' art, however, they belong in the popular domain. This thesis demonstrates that the comparative texts differ from their own genres, dystopian fiction and pornography. Consequently, Giselle is shown to be materially different from other Romantic ballets, particularly in its selfreflexive critical framework. Chapter Four concludes the discussion of the 1841 and the 1992 Giselles, and focuses on the repercussions of this study for the academy and the production and reception of ballet. Throughout this thesis runs the assumption, common in dance studies but less overt in English Literature, that academic activity is a personal and political activity, and that a study such as this requires that one engage with the status of academic enquiry both within and without the academy.

Torben Amtoft
Grace Baptist church is a Christian church that is actively reaching out to college students, military families and other groups of people. They aim to impact not only the community of Manhattan and nearby areas but also to reach around the world with the Gospel. It is very important for the church to have a user friendly website so as to introduce Grace Baptist Church to people who may have an interest in Christianity and church activities. Considering the limitations of the current church website, the administrator of Grace Baptist Church decided to have a new website that better represents the church and attract people to know more about the church’s mission. I and another student Nikhita Addanki from computer science department were working together on this project. The main objective of this project is to redesign and implement a website for Grace Baptist Church. The website will be used to post updated information about church events, announcements and opportunities, share videos and blogs, and let people around the world know about Grace Baptist Church and its mission. The new website has a better page appearance, a well organized structure and mobile support. It is implemented using WordPress, a free content management system, so that people from the church can early update the information without knowing much about web techniques. Alone with the implementation, I also reviewed some articles regarding website usability and performance to assure the quality of the new website. A performance test has also been conducted to evaluate the result.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Frederick Lawrence
This work argues that religious conversion sublates moral conversion and also, de facto, serves as a necessary foundation for moral conversion. Religious conversion acts this way by transforming the religiously converted subject's feelings. Through this radical change in the subject's motivation, and the consequent change in the kinds of meanings that constitute the subject, religious conversion also transforms the nature of the human good of which the subject is a part. It thereby provides the basis for the right ordering of the human good toward transcendent value and a supernatural end

Ziegler, George W. "Grace and participation in the theology of Thomas F. Torrance." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2014. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=214859.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the concept of grace and participation in the theology of T.F. Torrance. Specifically, it demonstrates the centrality of Torrance's concept of grace across the dogmatic spectrum of his entire theology. It argues that grace, for Torrance, is a downward, twofold movement from the Father and to the Father, through the Son in the Spirit. This understanding of grace distinctly defines the Christian life as the gift of sharing in the Son's relation with the Father through the Spirit. Part One considers grace as a movement of the Trinity, expressed in the economy of salvation which moves from the Father through the Son in the Spirit, and in the Spirit through the Son to the Father. Part Two applies this understanding of grace to the human person. It traces the way in which human beings, through the Holy Spirit, participate in Christ's Sonship within the three concentric levels of anthropology, ecclesiology, and personal formation in Christ. This thesis makes at least three contributions to wider Torrance studies. First, it fills a significant gap in Torrance scholarship to date. Until now, no single monograph has existed which focuses attention specifically on the development and scope of Torrance's language and theology of grace. Second, this study demonstrates the critical import of Torrance's concept of grace for understanding his overall theology. A misunderstanding of Torrance's approach to grace will lead to misunderstanding at nearly every level of his theological thought. Third, this thesis shows that Torrance is a valuable resource for contemporary ecclesial practices of Christian Formation. Torrance offers a fresh vision of the moral life which is capable of rooting and enriching conversation on this important topic. Rather than casting human persons back upon themselves, all service and ministry in the Church are shared and mediated by Christ the eternal high priest who makes the whole life of the Church a kind of ‘living liturgy' of eucharistic participation.

Abstract:
The concept of "dramatic mystification" turned out to be at the center of our interpretation of appearance, that is both deceptive and guenuine. What is at stake in such a study of grace is our willingness to point out that aesthetics and ethics are based on the same artificial background, which is : the life-enhancing illusion of happiness. This kind of "transcendental deception" should be seen as an archetypal motive of polymorphous action rather than as a misleading or fake impediment to philosophical reason's flow. From this perspective of a stylized life, we have attached great importance to the art of pretending that genius is a graceful gift when it is mainly a matter of getting used to it, that is to say a matter of mastering the prismatic and polysemous phenomenon of self-deception

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis brings together the two fields of missiology and Wesleyan studies, in order to develop a theology of participation in the missio Dei from the perspective of whole-life discipleship. Barth’s re-articulation of mission as an activity of God and the subsequent emergence of the missio Dei concept has shifted missiological thinking from an anthropocentric view of mission to the understanding that the church and persons are participants in the missio Dei. This thesis argues for the missio Dei to be defined as the grace of the triune God moving in, through, and with the world, that all might be drawn into the life-transforming embrace of divine love. The thesis argues that all narratives are held in tension within one grand narrative, the Bible. No person is in existence outside of this grand narrative. This is not a statement of fact but a confession of faith. The statement of fact is that the biblical grand narrative, the story of the triune God’s creation, redemption and sanctification, claims the status of being applicable to all persons and narratives. The thesis argues for defining grace as the presence, pardon, and power of God that moves in, through, and with the world. Jesus Christ is the meritorious means while the Holy Spirit is the efficacious means making possible the participation of all persons in the missio Dei. The central argument of the thesis, then, is that one participates in the missio Dei by participating in the means of grace, or the spiritual disciplines of piety and mercy. There are two original contributions. First, a Wesleyan perspective of grace and the means of grace inform the development of a theology of participation in the missio Dei that overcomes the repetitive articulations of mission as simply being human action or divine action. Second, through the means of grace, Christian disciples participate in the missio Dei as those transformed by God’s love and those through whom that love embraces and transforms the world. Twenty-first century missiology is illumined as the missio Dei concept is articulated as fully divine yet inseparable from human activity through the Wesleyan notion of co-operant grace, thereby positing the understanding that ecclesiology is informed through attention to disciplined discipleship. An implication of this argument for contemporary mission is that it is applicable for all persons, all ages, and all ecclesial expressions of the Christian church as participation in the missio Dei through the means of grace is understood to be a holistic way of life where spiritual formation is understood as inseparable from justice ministries.

Smith, Brian. "The historical development of the doctrine of Original Grace in church history and its viability in the context of Stone-Campbell movement soteriology." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3038.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to investigate the historical and theological origins of the doctrine of Original Grace and test its viability within Stone-Campbell soteriology. Chapter 1 seeks to provide an exhaustive literature review of those works of the proponents of Original Grace in which they discuss the doctrine in order to demonstrate the place of Original Grace within each tradition, and to make specific connections from the ideas of each writer to their respective theological, philosophical, and historical influences. Chapter 2 explores the exegetical basis for the doctrine of Original Grace. The bulk of attention is given to Romans 5:12-21, as the principal passage cited in discussions of the subject, and to the exegesis of Jack Cottrell, who displays the most current and developed version of the doctrine of Original Grace. I seek, primarily, to delve deeply into the text to gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which the doctrine of Original Grace has been extracted from this text, explore the most detailed textual justification that has been provided for the doctrine, and ultimately determine what is at stake in the unique reading of the text that brings out Original Grace. Secondarily, I seek to assess whether the Original Grace interpretation of the passage is successful on its own terms. Chapter 3 aims to make a significant contribution to Stone-Campbell Movement theology, and also contribute to wider contemporary theological conversations from within the Stone-Campbell Movement. Specifically, I seek to discover how the doctrine of Original Grace fares in conversation with other accounts of grace and salvation, both as a potential contribution, and by running the gauntlet of critique within that conversation. The chapter makes this contribution by discussing the theological and practical implications of Original Grace, identifying and analyzing both the doctrine’s theological strengths and weaknesses, describing and evaluating the theological contribution of the doctrine of Original Grace in regard to the three most critical exegetical issues, and assessing the viability of Original Grace as part of the traditional and contemporary Stone-Campbell soteriological system.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Stephen F. Brown
The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a systematic account of St. Bonaventure of Bagnoregio’s doctrine of grace. More particularly, the dissertation argues that a systematic account of this kind can only be provided by attending to that doctrine through his theology of hierarchy, a methodology that derives from the Seraphic Doctor’s own claim in the Legenda Maior that St. Francis was a vir hierarchicus, or a “hierarchical man.” Throughout the course of his theological career, the Seraphic Doctor defines sanctifying grace as a created influentia that “hierarchizes” human beings by purifying, illuminating, and perfecting them from within, thus causing them to become a “similitude” of the Trinity. This dissertation explains what this means and why it matters. Methodologically, the dissertation proceeds in three parts. Part I, “Theological Foundations for Bonaventure’s Doctrine of Grace,” lays the necessary groundwork for the rest of the project in two ways: first, by introducing three historical figures whose work will provide indispensible theological contexts for approaching Bonaventure’s doctrine of grace, namely, Pseudo-Dionysius, Thomas Gallus, and Alexander of Hales; and second, by introducing the Seraphic Doctor’s own theology of hierarchy as he inherited it from these sources. Part II, “Bonaventure’s Doctrine of Grace,” then builds upon these foundations to present a systematic account of that doctrine as it developed in some of his most important works throughout his career as a theologian. Part III, “Theological Implications of Bonaventure’s Doctrine of Grace,” concludes the dissertation by exploring how that doctrine can inform scholarship on Bonaventure’s theological anthropology, Christology, and theology of sanctity, respectively
