Abstract:
Dies ist die von Andrew Griebeler durchgeführte Übersetzung des deutschen Titels Ecce fides. Die Statue in Conques, Götzendienst und Bildkultur im Westen, die 2007 erstmals erschien. Wie der Übersetzer bereits in seinem Vorwort bemerkt, stellt diese Übersetzung zwar keinen neuen Forschungsstand her, doch entstand die Übersetzung in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Beate Fricke, so dass ein neuer, der englischen Sprache angepasster Text entstand. Für den deutschsprachigen Leser ergibt sich damit kein erheblicher Vorteil, ist das Original doch nicht nur in der eigenen Muttersprache erhältlich, sondern mittlerweile auch digital vollständig zugänglich (einsehbar unter: <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://digi20.digitale-sammlungen.de/de/fs1/object/display/bsb00066171_00001.html);">https://digi20.digitale-sammlungen.de/de/fs1/object/display/bsb00066171_00001.html);</ext-link> aber der englischsprachige Leser wird gerne auf dieses neue Angebot zurückgreifen, das eine wichtige kunsthistorische Arbeit zugänglich macht, die über den engeren Fall der berühmten Statue der Heiligen Fides von Conques hinaus auf die Bedeutung der skulpturalen Darstellung in der westlichen Kunst des Hochmittelalters eingeht.

Resumen. El artículo trata del proceso, tanto de extirpación de la idolatría en sociedades andinas durante la colonia, del virreinato de Perú y en específico de las provincias Huarochirí y Cajatambo, como de las diversas reacciones de las sociedades indígenas frente a esta arremetida del poder colonial contra las creencias y los cultos de la población indígena, bautizadas por los colonizadores materiales y espirituales como idolatría.Abstract. From the beginning of the Spanish conquest in 1532, the colonial project was linked to the evangelization and Hispanicization of the Andean population. In 1608, however, it became clear that missionary work had not been successful, because the indigenous population proceeded to practice the pre-Columbian religious cults under the cloak of Catholic feasts. As a consequence, in 1610 the so-called “Extirpation of Idolatry” was instituted in the archbishopric of Lima. The new institution aimed at the eradication of indigenous religions, classified as “idolatry” by the Spaniards. Andeans, however, deemed it absolutely necessary to perform the ancient cults in order to secure the survival of the ethnic group and all human life. The intimate bonds which tied Andean ethnic groups to their gods —often considered ancestors and/or creators of the group— gave the autochthonous religions great importance as an essential element for the constitution of cultural identity. Consequently, the Extirpation of Idolatry threatened the identity of Andean ethnic groups. Yet, by continuing to worship their gods and adhere to their religions —even in a modified form— Andean ethnic groups at the same time defended their cultural identity.Zusammenfassung. Vom Anbeginn der spanischen Eroberung des Andengebietes im Jahr 1532, war das koloniale Projekt mit der Evangelisierung und Hispanisierung der autochthonen Bevölkerung verbunden. Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts wurde jedoch deutlich, daß die bisherigen Missionsversuche nicht erfolgreich gewesen waren und die einheimische Bevölkerung unter dem Deckmantel katholischer Feierlichkeiten weiterhin ihre vorkolumbischen Kulte fortführte. Als Folge dieser Entdeckung wurde 1610 die sogenannte “Extirpation der Idolatrie”, also die “Bekämpfung des Götzendienstes” institutionalisiert. Sie zielte auf die Ausrottung der indigenen Religionen ab, die von den Kolonialherren als “Götzendienst” abqualifiziert wurden. Für die Andenbewohner war die Ausübung der einheimischen Kulte aber unverzichtbar, sicherte sie doch den Fortbestand der ethnischen Gruppe und jeglichen menschlichen Lebens. Die enge Bindung der ethnischen Verbände an bestimmte Gottheiten, die häufig als Ahnen und/oder Schöpfer der Gruppe angesehen wurden, ließ die autochthonen Religionen zu einem wesentlichen Element kultureller Identität werden, weshalb die sogenannte Idolatriebekämpfung die gesamte Gruppenidentität bedrohte. Indem die indigenen Andenbewohner jedoch ihre Religionen —wenn auch in modifizierter Form— beibehielten und fortführten, verteidigten sie zugleich ihre kulturelle Identität.

Abstract:
Este artigo trata do escritor austríaco Adolf Dessauer (1849-1916), um cronista de costumes da Viena da passagem do século 19 para o século 20. Banqueiro de profissão e escritor amador, Dessauer publicou em vida dois romances (Götzendienst, de 1896, e Großstadtjuden, de 1910) que são ambientados na metrópole habsburga, à época em rápida transformação econômica e social, e que hoje foram virtualmente esquecidos. Dessauer volta sua atenção para a classe social que ascendeu com o triunfo do liberalismo econômico, e que passou a relacionar-se, de maneira cada vez mais próxima, com a aristocracia decadente da capital austríaca, da qual mimetizava os gostos e os hábitos. Ao contrário do que aconteceria em outras nações européias, a burguesia, no Império Habsburgo, não criou um repertório cultural ou estético próprio, mas tentou apropriar-se, por meio da mímese, dos padrões culturais aristocráticos, o que gerou uma classe de imitadores sobre a qual Dessauer volta um olhar irônico e penetrante. Ao mesmo tempo, Dessauer mostra como o partido dos cristãos anti-semitas, na Áustria, recrutou seu eleitorado dentre a camada de artesãos que, com o surgimento da nova ordem econômica, proletarizou-se: a estes artesãos empobrecidos dirigia-se a campanha promovida pelo Dr. Karl Lueger, que identificava com o judaísmo e com os judeus o capitalismo liberal. Já em Großstadtjuden o autor volta-se sobre os mesmos fenômenos, porém de um ponto de vista estritamente judaico, que tem como ponto de partida algumas famílias e a maneira como cada uma delas reage ao crescente anti-semitismo na capital austríaca. Olhando-se em retrospecto, a história da comunidade judaica viensense, que à época de Dessauer era a segunda em tamanho na Europa, superada apenas pela de Varsóvia, afigura-se, neste romance, como um prelúdio de toda a história judaica na Europa do século 20, o que traz um inesperado interesse por uma obra literária que parecia condenada ao esquecimento.
