Abstract:
Gotska Sandön is the Baltic ocean’s most isolated island, located approximately 40 kilometres north from the closest civilisation. Today the island serves as a national park and a tourist attraction. The remoteness has made the island a difficult place to reach both in the past and today. Yet, excavations on the island show that human activity existed long before tourists arrived.                     The study observes Gotska Sandön through a long-term perspective by examining the osteological and archaeological findings from the island. The study is part of a larger project conducted by Uppsala university and Södertörns högskola. The purpose of the study is to examine the historic human activity on the island to determine the island’s importance for humans in the past. Therefore, this paper examines all ages where human activity can be traced, resulting in a perspective from the stone age to present-time.         Results indicate human activity through different eras where the island has worked as a hunting ground as well as a place for rituals such as funeral sites. Conclusions that can be drawn from the study is that the island has had different meanings through different times, ritual such as functional. The study finds a strong connection between human activity and seal hunting throughout the ages and indicates the impact seal hunting has had for human survival.

Abstract:
The aim of this report was to investigate if the number and distribution of sea holly (Eryngium maritimum) on the island of Gotska Sandön in the Baltic sea north of Gotland have, and to explore if there is a link between change in plant habitat and change in number of sea holly individuals on the island. To do so a plant inventory was made in 2021 and compared to a previous inventory that was done in 2009. The number of individuals was counted and the habitat which they grey in was noted. Moreover, the presence of japanese rose (Rosa rugosa), and the expansion of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) was also noted in each locality where sea holly was found. The number of individuals of sea holly on Gotska Sandön went from 9353 in 2009 to 8310 in 2021, mainly becuase of fewer individuals in the largest locality of sea holly on the island. This is probably due to an increase in the proportion of individuals growing on the wooded dunes compared to 2009 and an expansion of japanese rose in the locality. The localities where no scots pine or japanese rose grew in the grey- and white dunes the individuals of sea holly stayed the same or increased in numbers. Despite this, no link could be found between the change in sea holly individual numbers and what plan habitat they grew on Gotska Sandön 2021.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis discusses the concept of genre and the comic Gothic. It is an attempt to demonstrate the conflicts rooted in "genre" by discussing several scholars, such as Alistair Fowler and Mattias Fyhr with their works Kinds of Literature and De mörka labyrinterna respectively, and then problematise the "Gothic" as a genre and as a concept. Thus Avril Horner’s and Sue Zlosnik’s work Gothic and the Comic Turn is consulted through the discussion. The questions I ask are the following: What is a literary genre? How is the comic Gothic described by the researchers, and how does comic Gothic work in A. Lee Martinez’ novel Gil’s All Fright Diner (2005)? How can one use these questions in the classroom? The used methods in the thesis are genre analysis and close reading. I conclude that genre is a way to understand the relationship between a literary work and various conventions, such as environment and its contemporaries. Genre is also a tool for the reader to understand the traditions, history and other works the read text is related to. The comic inside the Gothic may appear and is as natural to the genre as horror and terror, since the Gothic is always close to self-parody. This can even be observed in the first Gothic novel, Horace Walpole’s Castle of Otranto (1764). Furthermore, Gil’s All Fright Diner uses both the repertoire of classic Gothic and Horner’s and Zlosnik’s findings of the comic turn in the Gothic. Finally, the question regarding the definition of literary genre can be used in the classroom to widen students’ views on both genre itself and the prose they read. The comic Gothic can be used as an example on how genre can appear in different modes. Gil’s All Fright Diner is a thankful text for classroom readings due to its comic and gothic nature, and its contemporary language, themes and styles can make it relatable to students. There is therefore a potential in the concept of genre and the comic Gothic as subjects of discussion in the classroom.

Esta investigación analiza las representaciones sociales configuradas en el colectivo docente, referidas a la inmigración y su presencia en los centros de enseñanza, y en el alumnado, sobre su relación con el profesorado y la representación del contexto escolar. El análisis macro y micro confluye bajo un contexto social complejo que abarca desde las representaciones que aparecen en la prensa escrita hasta las que acontecen en los propios docentes y el alumnado, en este caso el contexto se refiere a los centros de enseñanza ubicados en el barrio de Son Gotleu (Palma de Mallorca) socialmente vulnerable, estigmatizado y con elevada concentración de población inmigrante extracomunitaria. Un lugar propicio para experimentar con las representaciones mantenidas por unos y otros actores, puestas en práctica en un ambiente enrarecido, por la llegada de nuevos alumnos, que de una u otra forma rompen con las funciones pedagógicas, que se venían realizando hasta el momento.

Abstract:
Syftet med denna uppsats är att ur ett genreteoretiskt och komparativt perspektiv med hjälp av metoden närläsning undersöka vilka av gotikens genrekonventioner som förekommer i svensk urban fantasy. Romanerna som analyseras är Nene Ormes Udda verklighet (2010), Mats Strandbergs och Sara Bergmark Elfgrens Cirkeln (2011), samt Charlotte Cederlunds Middagsmörker (2016). De gotiska genrekonventioner som används vid analysen är hämtade från Mattias Fyhrs definition av gotik i hans doktorsavhandling De mörka labyrinterna (2003). I diskussionsdelen kombineras dessa med Alastair Fowlers teori ur Kinds of Literature (1982) kring hur olika genrer förefaller ha en rörlighet och flyta in i varandra. Resultatet av analysen visar att samtliga av Fyhrs kategorier finns representerade i de tre romanerna, och skiljer sig något i hur de gestaltas. Följande slutsatser dras: att många likheter förekommer såsom att de drömmar och syner som skildras är vitala för böckernas handlingar, att huvudkaraktären i samtliga analyserade romaner är kvinnlig, utom i Cirkeln där fem perspektiv förekommer varav ett är manligt, att alla romaner har sina egna varianter på fantasytroperna Rådet och Den utvalda, samt att urban fantasy inte går att se som en modern variant av gotiken utan snarare utgör en sentida ättling till gotikgenren.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to investigate the meaning and importance of the female friendship within Ellen Moers tradition and theory regarding the female gothic. In this essay, I argue that the female friendship has played an important role in the portrayal of the Gothic fiction as socially critical of women’s position in the society, mainly by examining the two works Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. The essay is also interested in how the female gothic has developed over time and whether the notion can be applied while analysing more contemporary gothic, and thus, considers the works’ different time periods.

Abstract:

Syftet med min uppsats är att undersöka förhållandet mellan fyra av den kanadensiske regissören David Cronenbergs filmer och den gotiska traditionen. De filmer jag valt att behandla är Shivers (1974), Rabid (1976), The Brood (1979) och Dead Ringers (1988). Den gotiska traditionen utmärks bland annat av en fokusering på kroppsligt baserad skräck. Skräck med utgångspunkt i kroppen återfinns även i Cronenbergs filmer. Vid en närmare studie av dessa filmer har jag dock funnit att de även innehåller element av det som feministiskt inriktade forskare kallat familjegotik – gotiska representationer av familjen.

A artrite gotosa, ou gota, consiste num processo lento e reincidente de inflamação provocado pelo acúmulo e precipitação de cristais de urato nas articulações dando início à patologia provocando dor intensa, desconforto e debilidade física nos pacientes. A procura por novas opções de tratamento para a artrite gotosa vem aumentando consideravelmente e se justifica diante dos efeitos adversos e, muitas vezes inadequação do tratamento em uso clínico atualmente. A espécie Sparattosperma leucanthum, popularmente conhecida como “cinco-folhas”, pertencente ao pequeno gênero Sparattosperma é amplamente distribuída pelo Brasil, sendo considerada uma planta nativa. Poucos estudos relatam o estudo fitoquímico da espécie Sparattosperma leucanthum, apesar de ser utilizada na medicina popular brasileira para tratamento de inflamações, reumatismo e como depurativa do sangue. No presente trabalho os extratos acetato etílico, metanólico e aquoso de S. leucanthum foram avaliados quanto às suas atividades de inibição da enzima xantina oxidase e antioxidante in vitro, e atividades anti-hiperuricêmica e antiartrite gotosa in vivo. Para avaliar o efeito dos extratos sobre os níveis sanguíneos de ácido úrico, foi utilizado modelo de hiperuricemia induzida por oxonato de potássio em camundongos Swiss. Para o teste de atividade inibitória da enzima xantina oxidase in vitro, o extrato acetato etílico apresentou atividade significativa na concentração de 100 μg/mL. Nos ensaios in vivo, o extrato aquoso na dose de 125 mg/kg reduziu significativamente os níveis séricos de ácido úrico e também foi capaz de inibir a enzima xantina hepática (XOD). O extrato metanólico foi ativo quanto à avaliação da atividade anti-hiperuricêmica em todas as doses avaliadas, porém somente na dose de 500 mg/kg este extrato mostrou atividade sobre a XOD. O extrato acetato etílico reduziu os níveis séricos de ácido úrico de camundongos hiperuricêmicos nas doses de 125, 250 e 500 mg/kg, sendo que na dose de 250 mg/kg, este extrato mostrou-se mais ativo. Os extratos acetato etílico (125 e 250 mg/kg) e aquoso (500 mg/kg) apresentaram atividade anti-inflamatória significativa no modelo de edema de pata induzido por cristais de urato. No intuito de avaliar as atividades antioxidantes dos componentes dos extratos num amplo espectro de polaridade, foram realizados os experimentos in vitro com DPPH, ABTS e β-caroteno/ácido linoleico. Os extratos acetato etílico, metanólico e aquoso apresentaram expressiva atividade antioxidante, especialmente no teste com o sistema β-caroteno/ácido linoleico. A escolha do extrato acetato etílico para a realização do fracionamento cromatográfico e estudo fitoquímico 2 se deu pela análise dos resultados nos testes biológicos mais promissores e que possibilitariam chegar à obtenção das substâncias ativas. O fracionamento cromatográfico do extrato acetato etílico conduziu à obtenção de cinco substâncias com grau de pureza considerável. Para a elucidação estrutural, amostras destas substâncias foram enviadas para a obtenção de espectros de ressonância magnética nuclear. O presente trabalho possibilitou contribuir para um maior conhecimento do ponto de vista farmacológico da espécie S. leucanthum. Os resultados apresentados pelos extratos acetato etílico, metanólico e aquoso de Sparattosperma leucanthum, indicaram que estes extratos podem ser importantes matérias-primas para a elaboração de fitoterápicos com ações na hiperuricemia e gota. Os resultados corroboram o uso popular desta espécie vegetal para o tratamento da inflamação, como a artrite gotosa. ______________________________________________________________________
ABSTRACT: Gouty arthritis, or gout, consists in a slowly and recidivist inflammation process caused by accumulation and precipitation of monosodium urate cristals on the joints, starting the pathology provoking intense pain, discomfort and physical weakness on the patient. The research for new treatment options to gouty arthritis has been growing considerably and it is justified by the side effects and, in many times, the inappropriateness of the current treatments in clinical medicine. The species Sparattosperma leucanthum, popularly known as “cinco-folhas”, which belongs to the small genera Sparattosperma is largely distributed on Brazil, and it has been recognized as a native plant. Just a few studies relate the phytochemical research of Sparattosperma leucanthum, although this species is used in Brazilian folk medicine to treat inflammation, rheumatism and as blood cleanser. In this work, the ethyl acetate, methanolic and aqueous extracts were evaluated for their inhibition activity of xanthine oxidaseand antioxidant activity in vitro, and antihyperuricemic and gouty antiartritic activities in vivo. In order to evaluate the effect of extracts on blood levels of uric acid, it was used an exoerimental model of hyperuricemia induced by potassium oxonate in mice. In the test of inhibitory activity of xanthine oxidase in vitro, ethyl acetate extract has presented significant activity at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. In the in vivo assays, the aqueous extract, at the dose of 125 mg/kg, reduced significantly the blood levels of uric acid and also was capable to inhibit the liver xanthine (XOD). The methanolic extract was active on the evaluation of antihyperuricemic activity at all the evaluated doses, however only at dose of 500 mg;kg this extract showed activity on XOD. The ethyl acetate extract reduced the blood levels of uric acid on hyperuricemic mice at the doses of 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg, and at the dose of 250 mg/kg, the ethyl acetate extract was more active. The ethyl acetate extract (125 and 250 mg/kg) and aqueous extract (500 mg/kg) howed significant anti-inflammatory activity on paw oedema model induced by MSU crystals. In order to evaluate the antioxidant activity of extract compounds in a wide range polarity, the in vitro experiments DPPH, ABTS and β-carotene/linoleic acid were performed. The ethyl acetate extract, methanolic extract and aqueous extract showed expressive antioxidant activities, especially on the test with β-carotene/linoleic acid system. The choice for the ethyl acetate extract to performing the chromatographic fractionation and phytochemical study was made by analyses of the most promising results on biological tests, that would allow the reaching the obtaining of active substances. The chromatographic fractionation of ethyl acetate extract conducted to the obtaining of five substances with considerable grade of purity. To structural elucidation, amounts from these substances were sent for obtaining of NMR spectra. The present study allowed to contribute to a better understanding of the pharmacological point of view of S. leucanthum species. The results presented by ethyl acetate, methanolic and aqueous extracts of Sparattosperma leucanthum, indicated that these extracts may be important raw materials for the preparation of herbal medicines with shares in hyperuricemia and gout. The results support the popular use of this plant species for the treatment of inflammation, such as gout.

Abstract:
This study uses thing theory as a focal lens to examine the way subject/object relationships are portrayed within two fantasy novels— Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Hiromi Goto’s Half World— that have elements of horror in them. It takes into consideration the tropes and stereotypes present within dark stories for children and uses thing theory to look at how subjects and objects are introduced to one another within a horror setting and, consequently, how they transform each other through either use or misuse. This allows for a fuller understanding of how subjects and objects transgress and mutate within the horror genre. It provides an alternative direction from which to approach the analysis of character development by understanding the ways in which child protagonists are transformed by objects and how they, in turn, can manipulate things and situations to shift the balance of power in their favour. The findings provide an alternative approach to the further study of gender representations and cultural identities in horror fiction for children and young adults.

Abstract:
Polymetric writing is an integral technique in contemporary compositional practice. Dan Welcher and Yo Goto are principal employers of this practice in the wind band medium. Their methods endure even the results of modern scholarship showing limited human perception of polyrhythmic events. This dissertation provides a comprehensive metric analysis of excerpts from the music of Welcher and Goto. Five examples are explored from major band works of each of the two composers. The analytical process in the study utilizes the metrical concept set forth by Maury Yeston, so that a comparison can be made between the rhythmic components of the competing meters. The results of the study show that both Welcher and Goto, in all ten excerpts, create polymetric sections containing elements that surpass the aural limits proposed by modern scholarship. Additionally, through identification of the misaligned metric layers causing each polymeter, pedagogical considerations are offered to aid performance of each identified excerpt.

In this essay, I make a queer feminist analysis of Mats Strandberg’s and Sara Bergmark Elfgren’s teenage novel ”Cirkeln”, which is about six teenage girls who learn that they are witches with a mission to save the world from demons. Using Judith Butler's theories, I examine the norms of sex/gender, ethnicity, class and sexuality found in the text and how these standards are created. I also analyze whether, and if so how, these standards may change when the magical elements enter the text. I also discuss the fact that older Gothic novels with magical elements often have been regarded as queer through history.

In this study, we tried to determine the exact level of involvement of Washington in Indonesia’s security. We wondered how United States could go back in Indonesian political and security games through a common cause, maritime security.. After considering indonesian maritime history and the rise of threats to maritime domain, we concluded that the securitisation of maritime realm appears as a security leitmotiv for both Washington and Jakarta. Facing with the vagaries of regional cooperation and with difficulties related to the archipelagic geography of the country and the lack of capacity, securising indonesian maritime domain requires the involvement of an external actor. By succeeding in persuading their counterparts in Jakarta of the necessity of securing the maritime domain, men and women of the U.S. Department of Defense, State Department and other agencies have allowed Washington to be back into Indonesia’s security game through an all-out cooperation

In designing optimizing and parallelizing compilers, it is often simpler and more efficient to deal with programs that have structured control flow. Although most programmers naturally program in a structured fashion, there remain many important programs and benchmarks that include some number of goto statements, thus rendering the entire program unstructured. Such unstructured programs cannot be handled with compilers built with analyses and transformations for structured programs.
In this thesis we present a straight-forward algorithm to structure C programs by eliminating all goto statements. The method works directly on a high-level abstract syntax tree (AST) representation of the program and could easily be integrated into any compiler that uses an AST-based intermediate representation. The actual algorithm proceeds by eliminating each goto by first applying a sequence of goto-movement transformations followed by the appropriate goto-elimination transformation.
Our McCAT (McGill Compiler Architecture Testbed) optimizing/parallelizing C compiler is based on a compositional representation of the program, and hence does not support unrestricted use of gotos directly. We have implemented the method within the framework of the McCat compiler. We present some experimental results and study the cost of structuring. The results show that applying a small number of simple transformations eliminates all the goto statements, usually with a minimal effect on the execution speed. Thus, we can exploit structured representations for designing compilers, while paying a minimal penalty due to structuring.

Verket använder sig av ett antal motiv och teman som också kan kopplas med vampyrgenren. Vissa teman är inte lika tydliga i jämförelse med annan vampyrlitteratur, så som det kristna motivet, samtidigt som andra motiv tar nya former, exempelvis sexualitet och transformation. Låt den rätte komma in visar även en form av ambivalens mot godhet och ondska, och även mellan människor och monster, vilket kan kopplas med den kalla världen karaktärerna i Blackeberg lever i.

Denna uppsats undersöker vilka litterära gotiska motiv och begrepp som rockbandet The Cure använder sig av i sin visuella estetik, närmare bestämt i tre av deras musikvideor: "Charlotte Sometimes (1981), "The Lovecats" (1983) och "Lullaby" (1989). Analysen och undersökningen utgår från teorier kring semiotisk bildanalys samt ett intermedialt perspektiv där det tidigare skrivna ordet transformeras till visuella bilder. Andra teoretiska inriktningar som används i denna text är bland annat genusteorier kring receptionen av bilder samt ett psykoanalytiskt perspektiv där främst det undermedvetnas funktion inom den litterära texten granskas. Undersökningen kring och om gotiken utgår ifrån Mattias Fyhr definition av den litterära gotikens kännetecken. Undersökningen visar att The Cure använder sig av typiska gotiska motiv och könsstereotyper i sin visuella estetik men anpassar samt omvandlar gotikens uttryckssätt till att fungera i en postmodern kontext. De ursprungliga gotiska begreppen och skildringarna av kön, psykologi och konst är genomgående synliga i musikvideorerna men manifesterar sig på ett nytt sätt genom The Cures visuella konstnärsskap.

This thesis examines how gender operates in food theory, and reads across three contemporary North American writers to understand how they take up or divert gendered culinary configurations. Food is deeply embedded in cultural practices, and is therefore inflected by gender and gendered roles of a particular culture. In North America, for example, meat is commonly understood as symbolic of masculinity and eaten by men, and vegetables are symbolic of femininity and eaten by women. Sallie Tisdale’s The Best Thing l Ever Tasted (2000), Ruth Ozeki’s My Year of Meats (1998), and Hiromi Goto’s Chorus of Mushrooms (1994) and The Kappa Child (2004), can be read as investigations into how a gendered subjectivity can be established or destabilised through food. By offering a close reading of moments of food consumption in these texts, I argue that Tisdale, Ozeki, and Goto offer a complicated and implicated gendering of food that moves beyond the binary model. The thesis is divided into three chapters that discuss how each writer approaches food and gender, and reformulates eating practices as a complex conversation rather than as a direct result of gender. The first chapter offers an introduction to how gender operates in food theory, an in-depth analysis of contemporary gendered food practices and commercials, and gives an outline for how Tisdale, Ozeki, and Goto write oppositionally from within a gendered culinary structure. Chapter two investigates how the implementation of gender roles through food practises, and cultural figures such as Betty Crocker inform how women cook and eat in Tisdale and Ozeki’s texts. Chapter three is devoted to how Hiromi Goto challenges received notions of gender and food by not gendering her protagonists and refusing to make her female characters readily consumable by the reader. In my conclusion I theorise how seeing food practices as an extension of a character’s subjectivity can root theories of food in the materiality of the food itself. I conclude that, rather than abiding by gendered stereotypes, Tisdale, Ozeki, and Goto promote awareness, creativity and joy as more sustainable ways of knowing and eating our food.

Kuriska näset är en krumudde som delas av Litauen och Ryssland, området är en nationalpark och sedan år 2000 upptaget på UNESCOs världsarvslista över skyddsvärda natur- och kulturområden.

Syftet med det här arbetet är att kartlägga potentiella hot mot Kuriska näsets fortsatta existens. Undersökningen har baserats på teorier utifrån ett hållbart perspektiv för ett bevarande för framtiden, det har också studerats huruvida dessa teorier eftersträvas i Litauen respektive Ryssland. Med hållbar utveckling eftersträvas att inte tära på naturens resurser utan att se till att de finns kvar för framtiden. För att kunna kartlägga hoten har en jämförelse mellan Kuriska näset och Gotska sandön genomförts.

Naturen på Kuriska näset är varierande, stora skogsområden, öppna vidsträckta sandområden, sanddyner med eller utan vegetation är de mest förekommande landskapstyperna. Här återfinns också några av Europas högsta sanddyner. Fram till för fyrahundra år sedan var näset jämförelsevis oexploaterat av människan, sedan dess har påverkan skett i olika stor utsträckning. Under början av 1900-talet var de negativa effekterna så tydliga och påverkan så betydande att åtgärder måste vidtas för att bevara näsets befintliga utseende. För att förhindra slitage, sandflykt och onödig nötning av naturen bedrivs bevarande åtgärder i olika modeller. Det har planterats sandbindande vegetation så som strandrör mm, spångar att gå på har lagts ut, det har byggts staket för att förhindra sandflykt och slitage, nätmönster och liknande för att förhindra sandflykt mm. På näset finns regleringar som förhindrar till viss del onödigt slitage av parken som i form av tältning eller andra aktiviteter och evenemang. Båtförbindelsen är en reglering som bidrar till att nationalparken kan begränsa antalet besökare, till vad de anser är rimligt.

Potentiella hot som föreligger Kuriska näset kan vara oljeutvinning i Östersjön, utsläpp av miljögifter, näringsämnen och liknande, bristande avfallshantering, kunskapsbrist eller bristande intresse, luftföroreningar, slitage från exploatering och en oreglerad turism samt regionens politiska och ekonomiska situation.

En parkadministration återfinns på båda sidor av näset, dessa har till uppgift att förvalta nationalparken. De arbetar bland annat med att bevara det kulturella och naturliga arvet av näset, kontrollera den ekonomiska och urbana utvecklingen, bedriva vetenskaplig forskning, arrangerar undervisning om hur man bäst bibehåller näset, utveckla hållbar rekreation mm. Den litauiska administrationen anser att det är viktigt att utveckla registrering av besöksantalet, för att vid behov kunna reglera antalet turister. De tycker också att det är av vikt att utveckla samarbetet med utbildningsinstitutioner för vidare utveckling av nationalparken. I dag finns det endast planer angående hur turismen ska utvecklas. Ryssland och Litauen stiftade under 2005 en överenskommelse gällande näsets skötsel för en hållbar utveckling. Förhoppningsvis är detta en början till ett långsiktigt samarbete mellan länderna, ett bra komplement till samverkan med bland annat Baltic 21 och HELCOM.

This dissertation tries to show the contribution and challenge of a Jesuit university in nurturing an ethic of collaboration for the common good by responding to the problem of fragmentation in post-authoritarian Indonesia. The history of compartmentalization since Dutch colonization, the unleashing of greedy elites after the fall of the Suharto regime and the silent penetration of neoliberal ideology through commodification of higher education on one hand contribute to the decline of the massive civic movement in higher education, but on the other hand open a new form of social movement through various local initiatives (Chapter I). It is in responding to this tension that an ethic of collaboration proves to be helpful, both in initiating a strong alliance among various groups and in respecting the plurality of its manifestations. The tradition of post-Vatican II Catholic Social Teaching, especially in Sollicitudo Rei Socialis and Caritas in Veritate, provides a solid grounding for proposing such an ethic of collaboration with its three recurring important themes: solidarity, subsidiarity, and the common good (Chapter II). This normative vision of collaboration for the common good is not alien to the Indonesian world view. Three Indonesian pedagogues (Ki Hajar Dewantara, Nicolaus Driyarkara and Mochtar Buchori) not only support the possibility of a cross-cultural dialogue between an ethic of collaboration for the common good based on Post-Vatican II Catholic Social Teaching and the Indonesian virtue of gotong royong (working together), but also show how the didactic of such a vision should be started in various forms and levels of education (Chapter III). Therefore, enlightened by Ignacio Ellacuría, the historical mission of a Jesuit university in the context of a post-authoritarian society is to provide space to engage with the people’s struggle to attain its personal and communal wellbeing. This commitment to be a-different-kind-of-university is carried out through research, pedagogy and community service (Chapter IV). In so doing, Jesuit higher education in post-authoritarian Indonesia will embody the mystique of service and bears a theologal dimension in its various collaborative practices to historicize the reign of God which is in process toward its fullness (Chapter V)

Baroclinic eddies are an important component of the General Circulation which regulate the extratropical climate by transporting heat and momentum. An idealization of this feedback is provided by baroclinic adjustment theories (Stone, 1978), which envision a linearly neutralized mean state. Based on the Charney-Stern condition, most baroclinic adjustment formulations propose basic states with homogenized potential vorticity. In this thesis we investigate the degree of potential vorticity homogenization in the extratropical troposphere. We show that homogenization is only observed across a shallow region around 700 mb, and propose an adjusted state with homogenized PV at the steering level alone. We demonstrate that this state can be neutral under certain conditions, and investigate its relevance for the equilibration of an idealized model. Because of the role of the PV flux as an eddy forcing of momentum, it is illuminating to describe the equilibration in terms of the redistribution of momentum. This affects both the PV gradient and the steering level of the waves, but the condition of homogenization at the steering level is very robust. In the 2D problem, a local balance can be written between the dynamical and frictional forcing of momentum. However, in the 3D problem there is an additional redistribution by a remotely forced meridional circulation. To circumvent this difficulty, we have developed a momentum-based formulation that exploits the interchangeability of momentum and temperature for quasi-balanced stratified rotating flow. By rewritting the thermodynamic equation as a momentum equation, we eliminate the forcing by the mean meridional circulation and formulate a local balance between the eddy PV flux and the non-conservative forcing of momentum.
(cont.) This introduces a new variable, which we call potential momentum. The circulation can then be described in terms of the conversion between potential and physical momentum. A major simplification of this formulation is that temperature and momentum can be directly compared. For instance, the surface temperature gradient appears as a momentum source, which helps ellucidate the role of the momentum fluxes and the so-called "barotropic governor" (James, 1987) for the baroclinic equilibration. Our results suggest that mechanical friction might prevent thermal homogenization at the surface.

I denna studie undersöker jag Carina Rydbergs skildring av "dålig" sexualitet. Jag gör en närläsning av Rydbergs roman Månaderna utan R. Läsningen utgår från Michel Foucaults och Jacques Derridas dekonstruktionsteorier samt från Judith Butlers genusteorier. Jag undersöker huruvida romanen kan läsas som gotisk, huruvida Rydberg kan sägas luckra upp gränsen mellan "god" och "dålig" sexualitet, samt huruvida hon skildrar sadomasochistiska kvinnor som subjekt. Abstract:
Syftet med min uppsats har varit att undersöka mitt författarskap, dess litterära språk och plats i den samtida litteraturen, genom att analysera min novell ”När hedningen kom till byn”. Undersökningen består av översikter över de genrer jag tycker min text passar inom: magisk realism, norrländsk litteratur och skräcklitteratur; undersökning av författares verk som har influerat mig och varit representativa för den genre de skriver inom; mina kurskamraters och handledares reaktioner och konstruktiva kritik på novellen. Resultaten av genreundersökningarna visar hur jag använt eller inte använt mig av respektive genres olika särdrag och markörer samt hur min text förhåller sig till dess samtida författare. I undersökningen av skrivprocessen framgick textens styrkor och svagheter. Mina slutsatser är att genrebestämningen av novellen är beroende av med vilken blick man väljer att läsa texten. Jag upptäckte också att jag delvis följer de traditionella skrivmönstren inom respektive genre samtidigt som jag har min egen särprägel och ton samt sätt att framställa en text.
The aim of my thesis is to examine my authorship by making an analysis of my short story ”När hedningen kom till byn”. The literary language and its placement in contemporary literature is what I focused on while examinating. My analysis consists of overviews of the genres in which I think my short story fits: magical realism, Swedish northern literature and horror literature. Analyses of other authors’ essays in these genres have been done, as they influence the story in different ways. Constructive criticisms from my fellow students and supervisors have improved the examination. The result of the investigation of the genres shows whether I have used their different characteristics and markers or not. It also presents where the text remains in relation to other contemporary authors. The analysis of the writing process reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the text. I reached the conclusion that the genre of my short story varies, depending on the perspective with which it is read. Another conclusion is that, although I have followed some of the traditional writing patterns in each genre I have my own distinctiveness when it comes to creating, writing and designing a text.

Abstract:
Plant-pollinator networks have shown to be highly dynamic systems as species and interactions change in time and space. Few studies have incorporated several habitats in their network. In this work I investigate interacting plant and pollinator communities of three adjacent habitats at Gotska Sandön, an island in the Baltic Sea. The networks varied in size between the habitats, and the larger networks of the dune and meadow displayed both nested and modular structure while the smaller forest network was more randomly organised. We found species present in more than one habitat that connected the networks by forming inter-habitat modules of tightly linked species. Species took on different topological roles in the networks depending on how many links they formed and where these attached. The habitat generalists were important to overall network structure as role correlated with habitat generalisation level.

Abstract:
What does it mean for an immigrant to be a “good” mother? Asian immigrants in Canada experience pressures to assimilate to a “normal,” homogenous ideal of Canadian culture—to erase aspects of their own cultural identity as well as their diasporic history. Asian mothers specifically are subject to mothering ideologies that depict white, middle-class, happy mothers as the norm. This thesis examines literary depictions of this phenomenon in novels by Kerri Sakamoto, Hiromi Goto, and Madeleine Thien. Each of these authors offers representations of motherhood that counter racialized and gendered ideals of mothering, and that refuse to ignore the sometimes traumatic effects that diaspora can have on immigrant families. Through David Eng and Shinhee Han’s notion of “racial melancholia”, I argue that the mothers in these novels conduct “maternal melancholia,” a form of motherwork that subverts dominant ideologies of mothering, resists assimilation, and sustains losses incurred through racialization and diaspora.
