Full text
Abstract:
Differentiation of endometrial stromal cells into decidual cells is essential for successful embryo implantation. Interleukin (IL)-11 signalling is required for decidualisation in the mouse (1,2) and the expression pattern of IL-11 and its receptors during the menstrual cycle suggests a role for IL-11 in human decidualisation (3). Exogenous IL-11 has been shown to enhance hormone-induced decidualisation of human endometrial stromal cells in culture (4). This study aimed to determine the effects of IL-11 on downstream gene expression in endometrial stromal cells following 12 days of progesterone-induced decidualisation, and to examine the expression and functional significance of IL-11 target genes during this process. Stromal cells isolated from endometrial biopsies (n = 6) were decidualised with 17β-oestradiol and medroxyprogesterone acetate (EP) or EP with 100 ng/mL recombinant human IL-11. Medium was changed every 48 h, and total RNA extracted on Day 12 for gene expression analysis using custom-made 15K cDNA microarrays. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR was performed on the same samples to confirm gene expression levels. In subsequent experiments (n = 2), cells were cytocentrifuged onto glass slides for immunocytochemistry using specific antibodies. Microarray analysis revealed 16 upregulated and 11 downregulated cDNAs in EP + IL-11 compared to EP treated cells. Among these were IL-1β (6.1-fold upregulated) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-5 (3.6-fold downregulated). Using real-time RT-PCR, IL-11 was confirmed to increase IL-1β (fold change 1.3–107.1) and decrease IGFBP-5 (fold change 2.8–469.0) transcript abundance in 6 patients. Immunolocalisation of IL-1β in EP and EP + IL-11 treated cells revealed more intense vesicular cytoplasmic staining with IL-11 treatment, while staining intensity for IGFBP-5 was not affected. Interactions between IL-11 and its downstream targets IL-1β and IGFBP-5 are likely to have functional importance in early pregnancy, and may provide novel targets for the manipulation of human fertility. Abstract:
An Englishman in Vartov Church, 1872[En englander i Vartov Kirke, 1872]Af S. A. J. BradleyEdmund Gosse, Two Visits to Denmark 1872, 1874 (London, 1911), Ch. V, 78-87.Englanderen Sir Edmund Gosse (1849-1928) var i sin samtid en fremtrædende og indflydelsesrig litterar skikkelse, hvis fortjeneste det var at formidle nordisk litteratur, især forfatteren Henrik Ibsens forfatterskab, hvoraf han oversatte enkelte værker, til den engelsksprogede verden.Som ung mand besøgte Gosse Danmark to gange.

Abstract:
Abstract Richard Gosser was a national leader in the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and a contemporary of James R. Hoffa. Both men had similar backgrounds, had similar ties to organized crime, and faced similar allegations of corruption, but the results of those allegations differed dramatically. Hoffa was singled out by a congressional investigative committee, and his name became a byword for the menace of labor racketeering. After an initial period of controversy, Gosser enjoyed a reputation as a labor statesman. A comparison of their careers highlights the political nature of union corruption probes. Gosser's career also provides a historical perspective on the sources of the recent corruption scandals that have shaken the UAW.

Abstract:
This paper reports a single-subject study of word associations in English. The work uses an innovative research methodology which makes it possible to examine very large numbers of associations. From this we can make some reasonably reliable estimates about the global and local structure of the association network of the Subject. The data suggests that this network is more dense than some common metaphorical descriptions of lexical networks imply. Some of the implications of this for models of L2 vocabulary development are briefly explored.

Abstract:
Abstract Gossea Agassiz, 1862 (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) and Gossea Spence Bate & Westwood, 1862 (Crustacea: Amphipoda) are homonyms and Agassiz’s genus has long been considered the senior name. Discovery of copyright information for Agassiz’s book shows that the presumed order of precedence is incorrect and that Spence Bate & Westwood’s genus name is the senior homonym. A detailed history of both genera is given with the recognition that Apherusa Walker, 1891 is an unnecessary replacement name for Gossea Spence Bate & Westwood, 1862 and that Octobulbacea Zamponi, 1983, as the only available junior synonym, is the name that should be used for Gossea Agassiz, 1862.

Abstract:
We propose a scheme to simulate the t–J–U model and investigate the quantum phase transitions using cold atoms confined in a two-dimensional optical lattice. By adjusting the parameters of external laser fields, we find a phase transition from antiferromagnetic phase to Gossamer superfluid. The Gossamer superfluid has a d-wave or mixed d- and s-wave symmetry, depending on the hopping parameters which can be adjusted by tuning the laser field. Experimental protocol to observe these new phenomena for future experiments has also been briefly discussed.

Abstract:
Eight Nicotiana species and three species accessions were grown and their sugar esters were isolated. Nicotiana trigonophylla, N. palmeri, and N. glutinosa gave the highest sugar ester yields. Sugar ester isolates were bioassayed at concentrations from 1.0 to 0.05 mg/ml against nymphs of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). The highest mortalities were observed with isolates from N. gossei and N. langsdorffii. As the sugar ester isolate from N. gossei contained both sucrose esters and glucose esters, these were bioassayed separately and both caused high mortality. The isolates of three N. glutinosa accessions varied in sucrose ester and labdane terpenoid content; labdane fractions were less toxic than sucrose ester fractions. Nicotiana glutinosa 24, N. langsdorffii, and N. trigonophylla, in addition to N. gossei, showed good potential as sources of biorational insecticide against whitefly.

Abstract:
Gossamer space structures technology have gained widely applications in space missions. However, the vibration problem is a great challenge which makes the technology complicated. The overall motivation of this work is to develop a vibration control system for gossamer space structures. In this study, a space membrane structure with piezoelectric stack actuators bracketed on its support frame is considered. First, the description of the smart space membrane structure and its dynamic model are presented. Then, a decentralized adaptive fuzzy control method is developed to control the structure vibration. Finally, experimental system is built up, and two vibration control experiment cases are carried out to verify the proposed control method. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed control method is more effective than the fuzzy control method.

Abstract:
A bxn gene, coding for the nitilase enzyme that catalyses the detoxification of the herbicide bromoxynil, was inserted into subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L. subsp. yanninicum). The agronomic characteristics of 3 transgenic lines (BXN 5, 7, 10) and their response to herbicides containing bromoxynil, were compared with that of the non-transgenic parent, cv. Gosse, in 1 glasshouse and 2 field experiments. The application of bromoxynil at 1.5 L/ha resulted in a 50% reduction in the spring herbage yield of the non-transgenic control but no reduction in BXN 5 and 7. The level of the phyto-oestrogens, genistein and biochanin A, in the leaf tissue were low in Gosse and the 2 transgenic lines, BXN 7 and 10, but the level of genistein increased significantly (P < 0.05) from 0.85% in Gosse to 1.43% dry weight in BXN 5, and biochanin A increased from 0.35% in Gosse to 0.73% in BXN 5. The application of the herbicides bromoxynil, bromoxynil+MCPA, and Jaguar (bromoxynil+diflufenican) at the cotyledon stage in a glasshouse study significantly reduced the leaf area of the non-transgenic Gosse, but did not reduce the leaf area of the 3 transgenic lines. When applied at the 4–5 leaf stage, the leaf area of Gosse was again reduced by all the herbicides, but only the bromoxynil+MCPA treatment reduced the leaf area of the transgenic lines relative to the control. The application of bromoxynil or Jaguar at the 4–5 leaf stage depressed the herbage yield of Gosse by about 62% compared with 0–24% in the 3 transgenic lines. In the field studies, BXN 5 and 10 had similar seed yields to Gosse in the absence of herbicide application, but the seed yield of BXN 7 was significantly less than the other 2 transgenic lines. The level of hard-seed in BXN 7 was also lower at 25% compared with 55–57% in the other transgenic lines and Gosse. These findings stress the need to carefully assess the agronomic qualities of transgenic lines prior to release as although tolerance to bromoxynil may be greatly increased by the bxn gene, other important agronomic characteristics, such as seed yield, hardseededness, and isoflavone content, may change as result of the gene or transformation process.
