Spider silk is a material of extraordinary beauty and utility. From the spider's perspective, it is foremost a building material, but also a safety net, a sensory organ, a weapon. From a human perspective, it is a material of extraordinary mechanical properties, an object of artistic and cultural interest, and a valuable window into the evolutionary history of spiders. Historically, there have been a mere handful of spider silk textiles, the most recent example of which was constructed by Simon Peers and Nicholas Godley. This was an extravagant work of art, and the silk was collected entirely by hand. Though the finished article is a testament to the beauty of spider silk, it also illustrates the technical challenges associated with obtaining it in any significant quantity. The effects of this scarcity are evident in the lab of David Kaplan at Tufts University. His group has developed a wide variety of applications for silk, but has focused mainly on silkworm silk in spite of spider silk's greater variety and superior mechanical properties. In the wild, spiders use silk for everything from weaving webs and capturing prey to breathing underwater. Shaped by almost every environment on Earth, spider silk has evolved into endless variations and permutations, offering a vast wealth of material knowledge if we can find a way to tap it. A visit to Cheryl Hayashi's spider silk genetics lab at the University of California, Riverside offers a look inside a spider and a glimpse of how genetic research can illuminate the evolution of silk. At the same time, it puts the limits of our knowledge into stark relief. The scarcity of natural spider silk has helped to drive a small industry in bioengineered and synthetic silk research, and also motivated projects that seek to apply the structural principles of silk fibers to other materials. But so far, these efforts are only a pale imitation of the real thing. For now, the spider is keeping her secrets.

Abstract:
The key to performance improvements in the multicore era is for software toutilize the newly available concurrency. Consequently, programmers will have tolearn new programming techniques, and software systems will have to be able tomanage the parallelism effectively. The challenge is to do so simply, portably, and efficiently. This dissertation presents a lightweight programming framework called Gossamerthat is easy to use, enables the solution of a broad range of parallelprogramming problems, and produces efficient code. Gossamer supports task andrecursive parallelism, iterative parallelism, domain decomposition, pipelinedcomputations, and MapReduce computations. Gossamer contains (1) a set ofhigh-level annotations that one adds to a sequential program to specifyconcurrency and synchronization, (2) a source-to-source translator that producesan optimized program, and (3) a run-time system that provides efficient threadsand synchronization. The annotation-based programming model simplifies writingparallel programs by allowing the programmer to concentrate on the applicationand not the extensive bookkeeping involved with concurrency and synchronization;moreover, the annotations never reference any particulars of the underlyinghardware.

Visagie, Lourens. "Gossamer sails for satellite de-orbiting : mission analysis and applications." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2016. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/810979/.

Full text
Abstract:
The requirement for satellites to have a mitigation or deorbiting strategy has been brought about by the ever increasing amount of debris in Earth orbit. Studies have been used to formulate space debris mitigation guidelines, and adherence to these guidelines would theoretically lead to a sustainable environment for future satellite launches and operations. Deployable sail designs that have traditionally been studied and used for solar sails are increasingly being considered for de-orbit applications. Such sail designs benefit from a low mass and large surface area to achieve efficient thrust. A sail has the potential to be used for drag augmentation, to reduce the time until re-entry, or as an actual solar sail – to deorbit from higher orbits. A number of concerns for sail-based deorbiting are addressed in this thesis. One of these concerns is the ability of a sail to mitigate the risk of a collision. By investigating both the area-time-product (ATP) and collision probability it is shown that a gossamer sail used for deorbiting will lead to a reduction in overall collision risk. The extent to which the risk is reduced is investigated and the contributing factors assessed. Another concern is that of attitude stability of a host satellite and deorbit sail. One of the biggest benefits of drag augmentation is the fact that it can achieve the deorbiting goal with an inactive host satellite. There is thus no need for active control, communications or power after deployment. But a simple 2D sail will lose efficiency as a deorbiting device if it is not optimally oriented. It was found in this research that it is possible for a host satellite with attached sail to maintain a stable attitude under passive conditions in a drag deorbiting mode. Finally, in order to fully prove the benefit of sail-based deorbiting it is shown that in certain scenarios this alternative might be more efficient at reducing collision risk, weighs less, and has less operational requirements than other alternatives such as electrodynamic tethers and conventional propulsion. This thesis aims to cover the fundamental concerns of a sail-based deorbiting device at mission level by firstly addressing the mission analysis aspects and then applying it to specific scenarios. The theory and methods required to perform mission analysis for a sail-based deorbiting strategy is presented. These methods are then used to demonstrate passive attitude stability for a drag sail, and reduction in collision risk, both in terms of the Area-Time-Product and collision probability. The analysis results are then further applied by identifying scenarios to which the proposed deorbiting device applies, and then performing a meaningful comparison by analysing a number of case studies. The application is made more concrete by comparison with likely contenders – traditional propulsion, electrodynamic tethers and an inflatable sphere.

Abstract:
The utilisation of space provides many opportunities to deliver pioneering innovations during the 21st century. One of these opportunities is the gossamer spacecraft, an emerging technology to achieve very low mass, large area and low stowage volume. Examples include large ultra-lightweight membrane reflectors and distributed tethered formations. Gossamer spacecraft offer the potential to deliver innovative new science and applications missions to aid our growing globalised societies: high-performing communications antennae, scientific telescopes and space-based solar power collectors. However, the ability to control such large structures in space is essential for their successful operation. To this aim, this thesis investigates a novel means to control large gossamer spacecraft by exploiting modulated solar radiation pressure (SRP), thus by modifying the nominal light pressure acting on the structure in space. Various concepts have been proposed in the past to control the attitude of a gossamer spacecraft, employing complex mechanical systems or thrusters. Furthermore, methods to control the surface shape of a large membrane reflector using, for example, piezoelectric actuators, are being developed. Since on-board control systems need to be high-performance, reliable and importantly lightweight, this thesis investigates the use of thin-film reflectivity control devices across the spacecraft surface. Controlling the reflectivity modulates the Sun's light pressure acting on a thin membrane thus controlling its shape. In addition, body forces and torques become available to control the attitude of such a large structure 'optically', without using traditional mechanical systems. The concept is demonstrated first by controlling a two-mass tethered formation in a Sun-centred orbit, showing that the spacecraft attitude can be stabilised around new equilibria created by controlling the surface reflectivity of the masses. Subsequently, the concept is applied to control the attitude of a large membrane reflector, which confirms the viability of reflectivity modulation by generating variable optical torques in the membrane plane. In particular, the nominal SRP forces are modified by introducing different surface reflectivity distributions across the membrane. It is shown that through these optical torques, the reflector can be steered, for example, to a Sunpointing attitude from an arbitrary initial displacement. The analysis also considers the variation of the SRP force magnitude with changing light incidence angle towards the Sun during the manoeuvre, thereby presenting solutions to a challenging attitude control problem. Furthermore, by adopting a highly-integrated multi-functional design approach, the concept of reflectivity modulation is also employed to control the surface shape of a large membrane reflector. First, the nominal (non-parabolic) deflection shapes due to uniform SRP across the surface are presented. Subsequently, a closed-form solut ion for the reflectivity function across the membrane required to create a true parabolic deflection shape is derived. In order to improve the quite large focal lengths of the deflected shapes that can be generated for a tensioned membrane, shape control of a slack suspended surface is also considered. The achievable (shorter) focal lengths support the feasibility of exploiting modulated SRP for controlled surface deflection. In summary, this thesis demonstrates the potential of using surface reflectivity modulation to control the attitude and morphology of large gossamer spacecraft without using complex mechanical systems or thrusters. Therefore, the concept of optical control represents a major step towards highly-integrated adaptive gossamer structures and supports the development of this promising key-technology to deliver advanced space applications.

Fernandez, Juan M. "Low-cost gossamer systems for solar sailing and spacecraft deorbiting applications." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2015. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/807039/.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays, a technology demonstrator platform popular amongst the research community given their relatively low cost and short development time are cubesats. Nevertheless, cubesats are by definition nano-satellites of small volume and mass, and therefore, they traditionally only allowed very limited sizes of any expandable structure onboard with final deployed areas in the order of a few square meters. This conflicts with the large areas required for efficient solar sails, making the demonstration of this exotic concept bound to more expensive missions with a dedicated launch. The applications that will be discussed throughout the thesis will be: three-axis stabilised solar sailing with a "rigid" support structure; and drag assisted deorbiting of a large host craft using a solar sail. Both of these applications still need validation in space, especially for Earth-bound missions. The main goal of this research effort is thus to satisfy the need of available deployable booms for their use on systems of unprecedented mass per unit area with cubesat-like mission constraints that will ultimately place more trust in gossamer concepts. For this, two novel rollable booms and their deployment mechanisms have been developed, one based on metallic tape-springs and the other on bistable composite slit tubes. Analyses and tests confirmed that the former boom has scalability problems related to stowage-induced boom axial curvature, and coil blossoming management. Reliable sail deployments of a 4 x 4 m^2 sail were achieved with them. The latter boom design solves previous scalability problems of bistable composite booms. The ground demonstrator tested deploys reliably a 5 x 5 m^2 sail, with the current compact boom design shown to be efficiently scalable for 100 m^2 class sails. To enable even larger sails with the bistable booms developed, a novel architecture named the completely stripped solar sail has been proposed. A simple experiment demonstrated the beneficial effect that dividing the sail into sets of parallel strips and using a continuous sail-boom attachment suspension configuration has towards scalability of the concept. A new structural characterisation programme developed means by which to characterise the slender booms properties. In addition, the test results validated and/or updated the imperfection seeded finite element models produced. These models are ultimately utilised in high-fidelity predictions of the performance of the solar sail booms under the established operational loads, as well as in the scalability analyses of the sail concepts proposed with them. Lastly, the first gossamer sail-based deorbiting system in it class, developed for medium mass (< 1000 kg) objects in Low Earth Orbit under an ESA contract, is introduced. Mission requirements, designs, and the purposely developed qualification programme are shown for the final system that reached TRL 5-6. The challenges and lessons learned from the ground testing of such lightweight structures are also documented with the aim of assisting future design and development efforts of similar concepts.

Abstract:
There is an increased need for spacecraft to quickly and efficiently de-orbit themselves as the amount of debris in orbit around Earth grows. Defunct spacecraft pose a significant threat to the LEO environment due to their risk of fragmentation. If these spacecraft are de-orbited at the end of their useful life their risk to future spacecraft is greatly lessened. A proposed method of efficiently de-orbiting spacecraft is to use an inflatable thin-film envelope to increase the body's area to mass ratio and thusly shortening its orbital lifetime. The system and analysis presented in this project is sized for use on a CubeSat as they are an effective utility as a technology demonstration platform. Analysis has been performed to characterize the orbital dynamics of high area to mass ratio spacecraft as well as the leak rate of such an inflatable device in a vacuum environment. Results show that a 1U CubeSat can be de-orbited using a 1.7 meter diameter spherical device in just under one year while using 0.7 grams of inflating gas, this is compared to over 25 years without any method of post-mission disposal.

Sunny, Mohammed Rabius. "Towards Structural Health Monitoring of Gossamer Structures Using Conductive Polymer Nanocomposite Sensors." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28797.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to calibrate conductive polymer nanocomposite materials for large strain sensing and develop a structural health monitoring algorithm for gossamer structures by using nanocomposites as strain sensors. Any health monitoring system works on the principle of sensing the response (strain, acceleration etc.) of the structure to an external excitation and analyzing the response to find out the location and the extent of the damage in the structure. A sensor network, a mathematical model of the structure, and a damage detection algorithm are necessary components of a structural health monitoring system. In normal operating conditions, a gossamer structure can experience normal strain as high as 50%. But presently available sensors can measure strain up to 10% only, as traditional strain sensor materials do not show low elastic modulus and high electrical conductivity simultaneously. Conductive polymer nanocomposite which can be stretched like rubber (up to 200%) and has high electrical conductivity (sheet resistance 100 Ohm/sq.) can be a possible large strain sensor material. But these materials show hysteresis and relaxation in the variation of electrical properties with mechanical strain. It makes the calibration of these materials difficult. We have carried out experiments on conductive polymer nanocomposite sensors to study the variation of electrical resistance with time dependent strain. Two mathematical models, based on the modified fractional calculus and the Preisach approaches, have been developed to model the variation of electrical resistance with strain in a conductive polymer. After that, a compensator based on a modified Preisach model has been developed. The compensator removes the effect of hysteresis and relaxation from the output (electrical resistance) obtained from the conductive polymer nanocomposite sensor. This helps in calibrating the material for its use in large strain sensing. Efficiency of both the mathematical models and the compensator has been shown by comparison of their results with the experimental data. A prestressed square membrane has been considered as an example structure for structural health monitoring. Finite element analysis using ABAQUS has been carried out to determine the response of the membrane to an uniform transverse dynamic pressure for different damage conditions. A neuro-fuzzy system has been designed to solve the inverse problem of detecting damages in the structure from the strain history sensed at different points of the structure by a sensor that may have a significant hysteresis. Damage feature index vector determined by wavelet analysis of the strain history at different points of the structure are taken by the neuro-fuzzy system as input. The neuro-fuzzy system detects the location and extent of the damage from the damage feature index vector by using some fuzzy rules. Rules associated with the fuzzy system are determined by a neural network training algorithm using a training dataset, containing a set of known input and output (damage feature index vectors, location and extent of damage for different damage conditions). This model is validated by using the sets of input-output other than those which were used to train the neural network.

Ruggiero, Eric John. "Active Dynamic Analysis and Vibration Control of Gossamer Structures Using Smart Materials." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32299.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasing costs for space shuttle missions translate to smaller, lighter, and more flexible satellites that maintain or improve current dynamic requirements. This is especially true for optical systems and surfaces. Lightweight, inflatable structures, otherwise known as gossamer structures, are smaller, lighter, and more flexible than current satellite technology. Unfortunately, little research has been performed investigating cost effective and feasible methods of dynamic analysis and control of these structures due to their inherent, non-linear dynamic properties. Gossamer spacecraft have the potential of introducing lenses and membrane arrays in orbit on the order of 25 m in diameter. With such huge structures in space, imaging resolution and communication transmissibility will correspondingly increase in orders of magnitude. A daunting problem facing gossamer spacecraft is their highly flexible nature. Previous attempts at ground testing have produced only localized deformation of the structureâ s skin rather than excitation of the global (entire structureâ s) modes. Unfortunately, the global modes are necessary for model parameter verification. The motivation of this research is to find an effective and repeatable methodology for obtaining the dynamic response characteristics of a flexible, inflatable structure. By obtaining the dynamic response characteristics, a suitable control technique may be developed to effectively control the structureâ s vibration. Smart materials can be used for both active dynamic analysis as well as active control. In particular, piezoelectric materials, which demonstrate electro-mechanical coupling, are able to sense vibration and consequently can be integrated into a control scheme to reduce such vibration. Using smart materials to develop a vibration analysis and control algorithm for a gossamer space structure will fulfill the current requirements of space satellite systems. Smart materials will help spawn the next generation of space satellite technology.

Abstract:
Gossamer membranes are large, ultra light weight, highly flexible thin films. They have been proposed for use as elements in systems such as solar sails and optical apertures, whose large areas require a low-mass material that can be launched in a compact package and then deployed to operational configuration upon reaching orbit. Many of the proposed applications require that the film possess a flat, wrinkle-free surface. Surface wrinkle configuration is determined, in part, by the method used to support the film. One configuration that has not been studied in detail involves the formation of vertical wrinkles oriented along the direction of a tensile force applied at the upper and lower horizontal film supports. An experiment was designed to allow known forces to be applied to a 9 inch by 9 inch square sample of film supported at its upper and lower boundaries. Four films 7.6 m and 12.7 m thick samples of Kapton (polymide), and 12.2 m and 23.4 m thick samples of Mylar were loaded at levels of applied tensile force ranging from 1.446 to 4.388 N. The out-of-plane surface contours that resulted were measured using close-range photogrammetry, a non-contact, optical measurement technique. Experimental results indicate that both wrinkle wavelength and amplitude decrease as a function of applied force magnitude. These trends matched those obtained using numerical techniques, which also showed that lateral border strain, not measured during the experiment, may be a more important factor in determining surface wrinkle configuration. After presentation of the results, the photogrammetry technique is further considered as a tool for use in the manufacturing industry, in similar close-range applications, for the measurement of both dimensions and displacements.

The objective of this essay is to investigate the underage officers in the Swedish army and navy in the year 1755. Their distribution across different regiments, individual parts of the army and across different geographical parts of Sweden will thusly be examined. Furthermore, the aim of this essay is also to dissect the degree of noble blood exhibited by the aforementioned underage officers, as well as exploring their circumstances and careers in an effort to present a clearer picture of who the underage officers were.     To accomplish this, data is gathered from an essentially complete collection of rudimentary data on all the officers in service of the Swedish armed forces in 1755. Information regarding their noble birth and future careers will be gathered from Gustaf Elgenstiernas Den introducerade adelns ättartaflor and the website Adelsvapen-wiki.     The results demonstrate that the navy and cavalry boasted the highest percentages of underage officers, as well as a potential connection between size of overall population and percentage of aforementioned officers. Furthermore, the study shows that a large majority of underage officers were noble, as well as indicating the hereditary nature of the profession of military commander at the time.

Abstract:
Satellite-based communication system can provide access to voice, data, video and internet transmission that is independent of terrestrial infrastructure. This is particularly important in disaster response situations and military maneuvers where mobile personnel need to maintain direct contact with each other and the central control. One of the factors that currently limits the effectiveness and practicality of these systems is portability. These systems require lightweight equipment that can be quickly and easily deployed and operated in a variety of environments. Parabolic dish antennas are the only antennas capable of providing the high gain required for direct satellite communication but their size and weight severely limit their portability and hence their use for portable direct satellite communication. Inflatable structures have been used in the space environment to overcome the limitations of launch vehicle size and weight restrictions. They are constru cted from thin film, or gossamer materials, and use internal pressure to maintain their shape. Inflatable structures are lightweight, have a low stowed volume and a high packing efficiency. It is proposed that this type of structure can be used to produce an inflatable parabolic dish antenna that can operate under terrestrial conditions to overcome the limits on portability for land-based communication. This thesis presents a design for a parabolic dish antenna and conical feed horn constructed entirely from polyester thin film. To further reduce the weight and stowed volume of the antenna the conical horn is fed by a microstrip patch. The performance of the components and their ability to operate under terrestrial conditions are assessed by comparing the results to those of an identical rigid system.

Abstract:
To understand the processes responsible for the diversity of life, one must consider evolutionary history. By incorporating a phylogenetic approach to studies of character evolution and species interactions, we may better understand the mechanisms governing this tangled bank. This work addresses fundamental questions regarding morphological and behavioral evolution, using gossamer-winged butterflies (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) as model systems.By investigating the pattern of genetic variation in a group of closely related species of copper butterflies (Lycaena), I show morphological divergence occurred in the absence of gene flow between Lycaena xanthoides and L. editha. Additionally, genetic divergence between populations of L. xanthoides has occurred without considerable morphological divergence. These findings highlight the utility of genetic data for inferring species boundaries and identification of cryptic lineages.Inferring evolutionary relationships among closely related species should benefit from multiple sources of information, e.g., unlinked genetic markers. Here I extend a method of reconstructing species relationships based on multiple reconstructed gene trees, using the number of incomplete lineage sorting events ('deep coalescences') as the objective function. This approach provides a more complete understanding of species' histories by accommodating population-level processes which may lead to discordance between gene genealogies and species phylogenies. The approach is evaluated with simulated and empirical data, and I discuss conditions which may result in misleading inferences. Finally, incorporating data from multiple gene trees, I investigate the evolution of association in a lycaenid-ant interaction. Lycaenid butterfly caterpillars are often involved in mutualisms with ant hosts: these larvae use volatile signals and provide carbohydrate rewards from the dorsal nectary organ (DNO) to associated ants to gain protection from natural enemies. However, larvae of some lycaenid species, such as L. xanthoides, do not possess the reward-producing organ, yet are still found in association with ants. Evaluating the relationship in a phylogenetic framework, I show that L. xanthoides likely evolved from a non-ant-associated ancestor. This suggests that L. xanthoides has 'cracked the code' that other, honest-signaling lycaenid larvae use to communicate to ants. Evolution of mutualisms between honest-signaling larvae and ants will likely be affected by the impact of illicit-signaling larvae.

Smith, Jr Philip T. "ANALYSIS AND APPLICATION OF CAPACITIVE DISPLACEMENT SENSORS TO CURVED SURFACES." UKnowledge, 2003. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_theses/311.

Full text
Abstract:
Capacitive displacement sensors have many applications where non-contact, high precision measurement of a surface is required. Because of their non-contact nature they can easily measure conductive surfaces that are flexible or otherwise unable to be measured using a contact probe. Since the output of the capacitance gage is electrical, data points can be collected quickly and averaged to improve statistics. It is often necessary for capacitive displacement sensors to gage the distance from a curved (non-flat) surface. Although displacements can easily be detected, the calibration of this output can vary considerably from the flat case. Since a capacitance gage is typically factorycalibrated against a flat reference, the experimental output contains errors in both gain and linearity. A series of calibration corrections is calculated for rectifying this output. Capacitance gages are also limited in their overall displacement travel. A support stage is described that, along with control electronics, allow the properties of the capacitance gage to be combined with an interferometer to overcome this displacement limitation. Finally, an application is proposed that would make use of the capacitance sensor and support stage assembly.

Abstract:
Satellite antenna design requirements are driving the satellite size to proportions that cannot be launched into space using current technology. In order to reduce the launch size and mass of satellites, inflatable structures, also known as gossamer structures, are being considered. Inflatable space-based structures are susceptible to vibration disturbance due to their low stiffness and damping. This thesis discusses the structural dynamics and vibration suppression via piezoelectric actuators, using active control of an inflatable torus. A commercial finite element package, ANSYS, is used to model the inflated torus. The effect of torus aspect ratio and inflation pressure on the vibratory response of the structure is investigated. The interaction with the torus of the surface-mounted piezoelectric patches, made of PVDF, is modeled using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. A state space representation is created of the model in modal space and modal truncation is performed. Traditional control tools are used to suppress vibration in the structure. First observer-based full state feedback is used, then direct output velocity feedback is explored. The aspect ratio of the torus is found to significantly influence the mode shapes. Toroids of small aspect ratios, skinny toroids, act like rings, but the mode shapes of toroids with large aspect ratios are much more complicated. For toroids of small aspect ratios, increasing the inflation pressure simply results in stiffening the ring, thereby increasing the natural frequencies. Increasing the pressure in toroids with large aspect ratios changes both the mode shapes and natural frequencies. The passive effect of PVDF on the dynamics of the torus is small, the mode shapes do not change and the frequencies are only slightly reduced. Active control of toroids with small aspect ratios using piezoelectric devices is effective. It may be more difficult to control toroids with large aspect ratios because the mode shapes are much more complicated than the simple ring modes found in toroids with small aspect ratios.

Abstract:
The 1990s and 2000s were crucial years for Italian cinema and witnessed a relative rebirth following a very critical phase. During that period, a few filmmakers became known for their habit of depicting marginal children confronted with problemscharacteristic of their country and heralding a hopefully better future. They are characters that are handled in a way that differs from that of neorealism, especially on an aesthetic level. The filmmakers’ attitude to the children’s gaze forms part of what defines their marginality but also suggests a degree of interaction, questioning, judgment, or even some difficulty of coming to terms with the world. Most of the films focus on the issue of childhood imagination – more specifically play and dreams – regularly put to the test of reality and existing in parallel with the world of the adults, who are indifferent to it. Thefilms thus suggest the marginality of children of all ages – the child-adult being very much a character of this period of Italian cinema – in a society that does not seem to care about their fate. They also suggest their ability to overcome their problems and to go on living their lives, growing up and perhaps changing the course of Italian society for the better at a time when it is in need of directions

Abstract:
The term Gossamer is used to describe ultra-lightweight spacecraft structures that solve the aerospace challenge of obtaining maximum performance while reducing the launch costs of the spacecraft. Gossamer structures are extremely compliant, which complicates control design and ground testing in full scale. One approach is to design and construct smaller test articles and verify their computational models experimentally, so that similar computational models can be used to predict the dynamic performance of full-scale structures. Though measurement of both in-plane and out-of-plane displacements is required to characterize the dynamic response of the surface of these structures, this thesis lays the groundwork for dynamic measurement of the in-plane component. The measurement of thin films must be performed using non-contacting sensors because any contacting sensor would change the dynamics of the structure. Moreover, the thin films dealt with in this work are coated with either gold or aluminum for special applications making the film optically smooth and therefore requiring a surface pattern. A Krypton Fluoride excimer laser system was selected to fabricate patterns on thin-film mirror test articles. Parameters required for pattern fabrication were investigated. Effects of the pattern on the thin-film dynamics were studied using finite element analysis. Photogrammetry was used to study the static in-plane displacement of the thin-film mirror. This was performed to determine the feasibility of the photogrammetric approach for future dynamic tests. It was concluded that photogrammetry could be used efficiently to quantify dynamic in-plane displacement with high-resolution cameras and sub-pixel target marking.

Abstract:
High precision inflatable surfaces were introduced when NASA created the ECHO 1 Balloon in 1960. The experiment proved that inflatable structures were a feasible alternative to their rigid counterparts for high precision applications. Today inflatable structures are being used in aviation and aerospace applications and the benefits of using such structures are being recognized. Inflatable structures used in high precision structures require the inflatable surfaces to have controllable and predictable geometries. Many applications such as solar sails and radar reflectors require the surface of such structures to have a uniform surfaces as such surfaces improve the efficiency of the structure. In the study presented, tests were conducted to determine which combination of factors affect surface flatness on a triangular test article. Factors tested include, three boundary conditions, two force loadings, and two fabric orientations. In total, twelve tests were conducted and results showed that which force loading and fabric orientations used greatly affected the Root Mean Square (RMS) of the surface. It was determined that using the triangular clamp along with 00 fabric orientation and high force loading provided the best results.

Full text
Abstract:
Gosse’s reputation, both during his lifetime and thereafter, was compromised by his propensity for error, a trait that Henry James famously described as ‘a genius for inaccuracy’. Though much of his biographical and critical writing justifies this criticism, my study of Gosse’s use of the device of allusion, mainly in his fictional writing, reveals a strategy of misprision that is creative and innovative. Since the concepts of Modernism and Postmodernism have changed the way in which texts are read, it is now time to re-read Gosse, and to explore the potential meaning of passages that would hitherto have been dismissed as error or exaggeration. Using Ziva Ben-Porat’s characterisation of allusion ‘as a device for the simultaneous activation of two texts’ as my methodology, I explore the complex and often subversive resonances of Gosse’s allusive practice. Allusion requires four participants: author, reader, the source text by the precursor, and the alluding text. Because a phrase does not ‘become’ an allusion until all four parties have been ‘activated’, many of Gosse’s allusions have for a long time lain dormant in the palimpsest of his writings. I argue that Gosse’s evangelical, tract-writing mother, rather than his father, exerted primary influence on him. I foreground the impact of her prohibition of fiction as the genesis for Gosse’s idiosyncratic vision, showing that its legacy was more bewildering, and ironically more creative, than has hitherto been recognised. Using the revisionary ratios of Bloom’s theory of the anxiety of influence, I establish a trajectory of charged interactions between the texts of Gosse as ephebe and those of his mother as precursor. Many hitherto puzzling and unresolved aspects of Gosse’s writing now make sense in the context of his ‘answering back’ the spectral Bowes. Although Gosse never fully extricates himself from his maternal precursor, he metaphorically orphans himself, and transfers his ephebe allegiance to a host of literary fosterfathers, constantly invoking them in his texts. He thus secures his ‘mental space’ through the covert mode of allusion, and the zenith of this practice is manifested in Father and Son. My thesis demonstrates the potential of allusion as a methodological tool in literary analysis. By his acts of re-reading, Gosse achieves the paradoxical act of simultaneously arresting and promoting a sense of cultural continuity. On the one hand, Gosse arrests tradition by fragmenting texts: by importing a phrase or a passage from a past work into his present text, he engenders textual instability in both. On the other hand, Gosse promotes cultural continuity by importing into his work fragments that serve as allusive bridges forging connections through space and time. I hope that this exploration of his practice will initiate a reassessment of Gosse’s role in relation to the allusive mode as employed by the early Modernists.

Abstract:
Stiff, ultra-lightweight thermal-formed polyimide panels considered in this dissertation are examples of next generation gossamer structures that resolve some of the technology barriers of previous, membrane-dominated gossamer designs while maintaining their low mass and low stowage volume characteristics. The research involved statically and dynamically characterizing and modeling several of these panels to develop validated computer models which can be used to determine the effects of changing manufacturing parameters and scalability. Static characterization showed substantial local nonlinear behavior that was replicated by new physics-based finite element models, and global linear bending behavior that was modeled using classical shell finite elements incorporating effective properties in place of bulk material properties to represent the unique stiffening structure of these panels. Dynamic characterization was performed on individual panels using standard impact hammer and accelerometer testing, enabling successful extraction of several structural natural frequencies and mode shapes. Additionally, the three dimensional time history of the surface of the panels was rendered from video data, and temporal filters were applied to the data to examine the frequency content. These data were also correlated to the shell element numerical models. Overall, the research contributes to the total knowledge base of gossamer technologies, advances stiff panel-based structures toward space qualification, and demonstrates their potential for use in apertures and other spacecraft.

Abstract:
Why two French philosophers, Jean Cavaillès and Jean Gosset, entered into active resistance as soon as 1940 whereas most people in their generation did not or did, but according to different modalities ? Respectively born in 1903 and 1912, they are both coming from « Ecole Normale Supérieure ». Just before World War II , they both taught philosophy. Jean Cavailles was a lecturer at the Strasbourg University. Jean Gosset was a teacher at the Vendôme high school. We thus drew attention to the conditions of their family and school political socialisation. Nevertheless, primary and secondary political socialisation processes did not bring all the elements needed for understanding why they switched over to active resistance. Indeed, having this social capacity of political analysis did not allow to perfectly explain why these two philosophers took up arms. What had to be explained was less the resistant trend of the involvement of Jean Cavaillès and Jean Gosset than the armed shape it took on, and the breach it represented with respect to the various means of collective action they had used during the 1930s. For this purpose, the political context in which their engagement took place had to be integrated in order to see if a link could be established between the changes in the political context occurred in the years 1934-1939, then in the years 1939-1940, and the various modalities of their action. In the last part, we tried to show the social representativity of their commitment.
