Abstract:
This article explores the intersections between Australian party politics and commercial talkback radio from 1967 to 1983. It considers the eagerness of individual politicians such as John Gorton and R.W. Askin to exploit the possibilities of ‘dial-in’ radio, addresses how political parties came to view the usefulness (and the dangers) of talkback radio, and assesses the political interventions of Brian White, Ormsby Wilkins and John Laws. In doing so, the article traces the radio industry's campaign against the ban on pre-election comment, the evolution of the Fairness Code for Broadcasters, and the relationship between media monitoring and talkback radio.

Abstract:
Treating nominal government bonds like other bonds leads to a new theory of sudden inflations and currency crises. Holmstrom (2015) and Gorton (2017) describe bonds as having costly-to-investigate opaque backing that consumers believe is sufficient for repayment. Government bonds' nominal return is their face value, their real return is determined by the government's surplus. In normal times, consumers are confident of repayment but ignorant of the true surpluses that will fund that repayment. When consumers' belief in real repayment wavers, they investigate surpluses. If consumers learn surpluses will be insufficient to repay bonds in real terms, the price level jumps. This explains why we observe inflationary crises, but never deflationary.

Abstract:
Different methodological approaches and hypotheses relative to the relationship between ownership structure and performances in cooperative banking generate contrasting findings, so motivating this innovative study which is grounded on an estimation approach allowing for the potential endogeneity of the membership base. Based on a sample of 241 Italian small cooperative banks over the 2013–2018 period, we find that bank profitability is positively affected by the membership as in the study conducted by Jones and Kalmi (2015) on Finnish cooperative banking and different from the comparable Austrian empirical research of Gorton and Schmid (1999). Unlike the latter we did not find an increasing exposure to agency costs as ownership dispersion grows and showed that greater membership raises individual bank financial stability, lowering the cost of credit risk

Abstract:
The impact of political advertising is much debated. Those studies that have attempted to assess its role in the mix of information available to the voter have clouded the question with contradictory results. This research suggests that the issue may not only be how the voter decides, but also when the voter decides. For those voters with strong partisan leanings, campaign information usually reinforces preference. Those who decide during the campaign typically make use of available information from a variety of sources, including political advertising. However, it is the undecided, those who come to decision during the waning hours of the campaign, who may be most affecteded by the candidate's last-minute advertising blitz. In an exit-poll survey of 414 Seattle area voters, 102 were identified as “late deciders.” As a group they were more likely to mention political advertising as helping them decide, better able to recall and identify specific political ads than those who decided either early or during the campaign. While “attack” advertising was the best recalled political advertising, it worked against its sponsors, galvanizing the “against” vote among late deciders.

Abstract:
The relationship between liquidity and bank performance in finance literature remains an unresolved empirical issue. The main objective of this article was to investigate the relationship between liquidity mismatch index (LMI) initially developed by Brunnermeier, Gorton and Krishnamurthy (2012) and further developed by Bai, Krishnamurthy, and Weymuller (2018) and South African bank performance empirically. Different from other prior studies, the study undertook to determine the relationship employing the liquidity measure that integrates both market liquidity and funding liquidity within a context of asset liability mismatches. The unit of analysis was a panel of 12 South African banks over the period 2008–2018. Specifically, two liquidity measures – the bank liquidity mismatch index (BLMI) and the aggregate liquidity mismatch index (ALMI) were regressed against bank performance matrices. The newly developed liquidity measures are based on portfolio management theory and they account for the significance of liquidity spirals. Results revealed that, bank performance is negatively and significantly related with BLMI. While the bank performance is positively related to ALMI, the relationship is not significant. Also, the nature of relationship is dependent on the measure of profitability employed.

Full text
Abstract:
This article proposes investigating how the problem of chronic and deadly diseases and bodily injuries is explored in selected contemporary artistic projects based on biometric technologies and medical imaging. All of the projects that will be analysed use specific medical tools and methods (e.g., roentgenography or bio-tracking) to provide detailed, affective images of disability and illness. Nonetheless, these projects were created as pieces of art that combine visual and verbal elements: photographs, collages, and other illustrated stories (e.g., “biometric diaries” or open-source art). On the one hand, they show the “inner” and often invisible face of illness and suffering, but on the other hand they also raise questions related to algorithmic reductionism and politicization of such forms of representation of disease. This article will focus on artistic projects created by Diane Covert, Salvatore Iaconesi and Laurie Frick. It refers to the ‘ethos of health’ and the conception of ethopolitics (Nicolas Rose) to show the place in contemporary biopolitical society of illness (Thomas Lemke), which can be seen as an exceptional form of the body’s condition. Moreover, it considers the problem of the politicization of the biological body and affective experiences (Britta Timm Knudsen and Carsten Stage) and the category of untold histories explored by Joanne Garde-Hansen and Kristyn Gorton.

Abstract van Putten, I. E., Gorton, R. J., Fulton, E. A., and Thebaud, O. 2013. The role of behavioural flexibility in a whole of ecosystem model. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70:150–163. The predictive accuracy of complex fisheries models developed to anticipate the effects of changing fishery regulations appears to depend on a solid understanding of the processes and feedback systems linking biological and physical information to resource user. Many fisher decisions are modelled in the human component of the models, including inertia, or location choice flexibility. We unpack a whole of ecosystem system model and explore how location choice flexibility in fleet behaviour (sticking to the same seasonal and spatial distribution of fishing) affects outcomes such as catches and income levels and variability. Our analysis shows that the interpretation is not straightforward, and the relationship between behavioural flexibility and income level and income variability has to be considered in the context of three main fleet characteristics: profitability; how diversified the fleet is; and growing or declining target species biomass. We contend that making behavioural flexibility sensitive to the health of the stock and fleet profitability could potentially improve accuracy of large whole of ecosystem models such as Atlantis.

Abstract:
This article examines Sally Wainwright's Happy Valley (BBC1, 2014–2016) in the context of recent feminist attempts to theorise the idea of a maternal subject. Happy Valley, a police series set in an economically disadvantaged community in West Yorkshire, has been seen as expanding the genre of British social realism, in its focus on strong Northern women, by giving it ‘a female voice’ (Gorton, 2016: 73). I argue that its challenge is more substantial. Both the tradition of British social realism on which the series draws, and the neoliberal narratives of the family which formed the discursive context of its production, I argue, are founded on a social imaginary in which the mother is seen as responsible for the production of the selves of others, but cannot herself be a subject. The series itself, however, places at its centre an active, articulate, mobile and angry maternal subject. In so doing, it radically contests both a tradition of British social realism rooted in male nostalgia and more recent neoliberal narratives of maternal guilt and lifestyle choice. It does this through a more fundamental contestation: of the wider cultural narratives about selfhood and the maternal that underpin both. Its reflective maternal subject, whose narrative journey involves acceptance of an irrecoverable loss, anger and guilt as a crucial aspect of subjectivity, and who embodies an ethics of relationality, is a figure impossible in conventional accounts of subject and nation. She can be understood, however, in terms of recent feminist theories of the maternal.

Abstract:
AbstractA well-known relief pithos in the Louvre (CA 795) shows Perseus confronting a Gorgon whose human torso terminates in the body of a horse. Her equine features have proven difficult to explain, and earlier discussions of the scene have appealed to lost narratives, seventh-century artistic conventions and broad symbolic associations between Gorgons and horses. Focusing on her combination of equine and maidenly characteristics, this article interprets Medusa's unusual form with reference to a series of ancient Greek metaphors connecting maidens, horses and Gorgons. It argues that recognizing the metaphorical logic of the image allows us to understand Medusa's form as a sympathetic comment upon her death, which has parallels in the sacrifices of maidens in Greek art and literature.

Abstract:
Light-induced charge separation in photosynthetic reaction centers has a very high quantum yield. Due to this high quantum yield, bioenergy harvesting using photosynthesis of plant has been studied extensively. In the studies using algal cells or chloroplasts, their lipid membranes interfere with electron extraction. Therefore, most of studies are underway by using extracted photosynthetic organelles such as photosystems (PS I, II) and thylakoid membranes (TMs). However, without lipid membrane, the stability of photosynthetic organelles cannot be maintained. This is because photosynthesis generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protons that cause the degradation of photosynthetic organelles along with the production of high-energy electrons. On the other hand, chloroplasts have the internal environment separated by the lipid membrane to maintain homeostasis, which controls the level of ROS and pH within the chloroplasts. In this study, by mimicking chloroplast, we propose to form a biomimetic supported lipid bilayer (SLB) to maintain stability while constructing a TM-based photobioelectrochemical system. Alginate was used as a synthetic extracellular matrix (ECM), and SLB was formed with 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) through vesicle fusion. The swelling of the alginate prevents direct contact of TM-alginate composite film with the electrode and prevents separation of inside of the biomimetic protochloroplast from outside environment. To solve this problem, crosslink alginate with CaCl2 water solutions containing 20% ethanol to prevent warping of composite film and amino groups were created through silanization on ITO electrode to improve adhesion with film. Thereafter, SLB formation conditions were analyzed through confocal microscopy. With the formed DOPC SLB, it was verified by the dye release test whether the inside of protochloroplast was separated from the outside environment. Under the SLB-encapsulating environment, pH and ROS were controlled by ADP, ascorbate and glutathione. To confirm the improvement of the stability of TM, the long-term photocurrent was measured in the presence or absence of SLB and stability-maintaining materials. Moreover, SLB can act as a separator in electrochemical circuits due to its high electrical resistance. Electrical insulation property of SLB was confirmed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). References [1] Kosumi, Daisuke, et al. Abstract:
In this paper, from the algebraic reductions from the Lie algebra [Formula: see text] to its commutative subalgebra [Formula: see text], we construct the general [Formula: see text]-sine-Gordon and [Formula: see text]-sinh-Gordon systems which contain many multi-component sine-Gordon type and sinh-Gordon type equations. Meanwhile, we give the Bäcklund transformations of the [Formula: see text]-sine-Gordon and [Formula: see text]-sinh-Gordon equations which can generate new solutions from seed solutions. To see the [Formula: see text]-systems clearly, we consider the [Formula: see text]-sine-Gordon and [Formula: see text]-sine-Gordon equations explicitly including their Bäcklund transformations, the nonlinear superposition formula and Lax pairs.

Abstract:
The SONSO Personality Inventory, an adjective self-rating measure of five factors, was administered with the Gordon Personal Profile to a sample of 200 university students and with the Gordon Personal Inventory to another sample of 200 students. Four of the SONSO factors had at least one correlation above .45 on one of the Gordon scales. The multiple correlations of the SONSO Personality Inventory with each of the Gordon scales were higher for the Gordon Personal Profile than for the Gordon Personal Inventory. Relations of the scales to Eysenck's Extraversion and Neuroticism were also mentioned.

Abstract:
Based on a variable separated ODE method presented by Sirendaoreji and Sun, a modified variable separated ODE method is developed to uniformly construct the explicit exact solutions of sine-Gordon type equations by introducing a more general additional variable separated ODE. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by applications to certain physically significant sine-Gordon type equations comprising the sine-Gordon equation and double sine-Gordon equation as particular examples. As a result, we cannot only recover the previously known exact solutions, but also pick up some new formal solutions for the sine-Gordon equation and double sine-Gordon equation by means of this approach.

Abstract:
AbstractThis research aims to investigate the types of politeness strategies that are performed by Gordon Ramsay in judging the Masterchef US and Masterchef Junior US contestants’ dishes and to reveal whether Gordon Ramsay performs any different politeness strategies between the Master chef and Masterchef Junior contestants. The data spring from Gordon Ramsay utterances, taken from the elimination test of two episodes of Masterchef season 4 (episode 9 and 12) and the elimination test of two episodes of Masterchef Junior US season 1 (episode 2 and 6). The framework of Brown & Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategies is adopted. Findings reveal that Gordon Ramsay performed bald on-record strategy, positive politeness, and off record strategy. Furthermore, Ramsay performed diferent varieties of politeness strategies in Masterchef; and performed only positive politeness strategy in Masterchef Junior. Keywords: politeness strategies, masterchef, masterchef junior, Gordon RamsayAbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki tipe strategi kesopanan yang dilakukan oleh Gordon Ramsay saat menilai masakan dari kontestan Masterchefdan Masterchef Junior US dan untuk mengungkapkan adakah perbedaan strategi kesopanan yang dilakukan Gordon Ramsay kepada kontestan Masterchef US dan Masterchef Junior US. Data penelitian ini berupa tuturan Gordon Ramsay yang diambil dari tes eliminasi dalam dua episode Masterchef US musim ke-4 (episode 9 dan 12), dan dua episode Masterchef Junior US musim pertama (episode 2 dan 6). Abstract:
In this paper, the generalized Klein-Gordon oscillator is studied in the framework of Lorentz symmetry violation, and the Nikiforov-Uvarov method is used to analyze the Klein-Gordon oscillator with and without magnetic field. On this basis, we analyze some special cases of Klein-Gordon oscillators with Cornell potential functions in detail. The results show that the wave function and the energy eigenvalues of the generalized Klein-Gordon oscillator obviously depend on the Lorentz symmetry violation effect, and the Cornell potential function also has a non-negligible effect on the Klein-Gordon oscillator.

Abstract:
Coccinellidae (Coleoptera), commonly known as ladybirds or ladybugs, are a highly diversified family comprising nearly 6000 described species (Vandenberg 2002) distributed in 2 subfamilies and 24 tribes (Seago et al. 2011). The genus Nephus Mulsant, 1846, present worldwide, is currently placed in the vast Coccidulini tribe (Seago et al. 2011). There are different classifications for Nephus: Gordon (1976, 1985) considered five Nephus subgenera (Depressoscymnus Gordon, Nephus Mulsant, Scymnobius Casey, Sidis Mulsant, and Turboscymnus Gordon), while Fürsch (1987) considered nine Nephus subgenera, and later (Fürsch 1996) excluded Diomus Mulsant, 1850 as subgenus, leaving Bipunctatus Fürsch, 1987, Depressoscymnus Gordon, 1976, Geminosipho Fürsch, 1987, Nephus Mulsant, 1846, Parascymnus Chapin, 1965, Scymnobius Casey, 1899, Sidis Mulsant, 1850 and Turboscymnus Gordon, 1976. Gordon and González (2002) elevated Scymnobius to genus.
