Rose, Sophie. "PASSING BY: THE LEGACY OF ROBERT MENZIES IN THE LIBERAL PARTY OF AUSTRALIA A study of John Gorton, Malcolm Fraser and John Howard." Thesis, Department of History, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/8836.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the legacy of Robert Menzies in the Liberal Party of Australia, as articulated by Liberal party prime ministers, John Gorton, Malcolm Fraser and John Howard. It challenges the prevailing assumption in Australian historiography that Liberals have suffered from collective amnesia and have therefore not been successful in writing their own history, particularly in regards to their founder, Robert Menzies. It demonstrates that circumstances were key in shaping the way in which each prime minister thought and spoke about Menzies. It discusses how new nationalism hindered Gorton’s efforts; how liberalism inspired Fraser’s efforts; and how Howard’s belief in the importance of history drove his articulation of Menzies’ legacy.

Abstract:
Since the latter half of the twentieth century patterns of economic flows and the deployment of systems of production have encouraged greater political and social integration between nation states. This phenomenon, called globalisation, has reinvigorated debate about the nation state as a mode of organisation, and created the conditions for an ongoing natural experiment concerning state adjustment. This experiment, while on a global scale, has led to different responses from national governments, as each grappled with how best to accommodate both domestic and international interests. One neglected aspect of analysis in these processes is the role played by national bureaucracy in state adjustment as a means to move with globalising pressures or to resist their impact. This thesis presents a qualitative analysis of the interaction of one globalising process, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the workings of the nation state, as a means of assessing the way in which the national government has used regulatory processes and its bureaucracy to control FDI. An extended historical case study is used to examine changes in policy, regulation and the organisation of the national bureaucracy concerned with FDI in Australia. The period examined is from 1968 to 2004 enabling comparisons to be made across the experience of seven successive national governments (those led by prime ministers Gorton, McMahon, Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke, Keating and Howard) in the way they managed the domestic and international circumstances that impacted on FDI. This thesis makes a contribution to the literature on the interaction of globalising processes, the nation state and the role played by national public bureaucracies where national and transnational interests intersect. In particular, this thesis identifies the national bureaucracy as a key agent for government in enabling and domesticating the processes of globalisation. This finding demonstrates that national bureaucracy is significant as both a facilitator and the inhibitor of processes of globalisation, and therefore is a key factor in understanding the issues of state adjustment in studies of globalisation.

Zacharias, Erica Ashley. "Gordon Matta-Clark's photographic spaces." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/38192.

Full text
Abstract:
Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978) is best known for his experimental “building cuts,” in which he reconfigured whole architectural spaces slated for destruction in North and South America, and in Europe. An extensive scholarship theorizes Matta-Clark’s practice as a critique of his architectural education and a recuperation of the social spaces outside its purview. Today, audiences view Matta-Clark’s building cuts through the two-dimensional media of film and photography, further complicating the original works’ play with temporality and performance. Recent scholarship has seen photography as central to Matta-Clark’s performance-based and sculptural practice. This thesis addresses a gap in scholarship between Matta-Clark’s photography and his ephemeral works. Matta-Clark’s use of photography as document relates to the Land Art practice of exhibiting outdoor works inside the gallery. His photographs also engage in the photoconceptual practice of questioning that very documentary status. I trace three modalities for the photographic within Matta-Clark’s works: image (referent), object (medium), and apparatus (technology). I suggest that the photographic image is historically situated by the latter two categories as an ontologically specific space, at once material and abstract, technological and theoretical. My research draws on theoretical discourses underpinning Modernist architecture. The role of photography is belied in Modernist architectural discourse, a mainstay of Cornell’s architecture program under the leadership of historian Colin Rowe, from which Matta-Clark received a BArch in 1968. I find an unstated connection between photography and phenomenal transparency, a term defined in Rowe and Robert Slutzky’s influential essay, “Transparency: Literal and Phenomenal,” where it is used to describe the abstraction of space in the work of Le Corbusier. I set up a theoretical framework for the conceptual role of photography in Matta-Clark’s practice by being attentive to the relationship between photography and architecture through the photographic slice, the visualized analog to the sculptural cut. I argue that in order to criticize the supposed transparency of both photography and architecture apparent in contemporary art practices and Modernist architectural discourse respectively, Matta-Clark’s work investigated the two media in tandem.

Abstract:
The main focus of my dissertation is the Modified Stochastic Sine-Gordon Equation: utt = 2uxx − ut − sin(|u|^(&gamma)) + b(u, du/dt)dW/dt where &gamma > 0 is the parameter of the power of non-linearity, &delta &ge 0 is the magnitude of non-linearity, &alpha> 0 be the damping parameter, and &sigma the diffusion intensity, on one dimensional domain. We analyze the properties of the solution of the SPDE by the eigenfunctions approach allowing us to truncate the infinite-dimensional stochastic system (i.e the SDEs of Fourier coefficients related to the SPDE), to control its energy, existence, uniqueness, continuity and stability. The analysis relies on the investigation of expected Lyapunov functional of the energy in terms of all system-parameters. We simulate the model with respect to all system-parameters to visualize our conclusions.

Full text
Abstract:
The Gorgon is a creature described as terrible in ancient literature. It was depicted with glaring eyes, tusks and a hanging tongue and was a part of Greek antiquity from Archaic to Roman Period. The Gorgon motif has frequently been adorned on different materials. The reason as to why such a creature was depicted has been a subject of interest in earlier studies. The Gorgon motif has been elaborately studied in combination with buildings, armours and vases. A gap of knowledge that is still to be filled is a deeper examination of the Gorgon motifs on coins, which is the inspiration for this study in which the main aim is to approach an understanding of what function the Gorgon motif could have had on Archaic Greek coins. The study is based on a collection of 42 Archaic coins from Athens and Neapolis in Macedon. Through Panofsky's theory of iconography the material is analyzed and discussed via a series of sub-questions; ‘Did the Gorgon motifs differ depending on the location?’, ‘What combination of features appear on the coins?’, ‘To what extent was the Gorgon myth linked to the locations that used the motif and what other myths were used on coins during the same period? ’, ‘Is there a link between the use of Gorgon motifs on coins and on other material objects?’ The paper measures the possible explanations of the Gorgon motif with archaeological finds and ancient texts dealing with the Gorgon, many of which point to the fact that the Gorgon’s function generally served a purpose as an apotropaic symbol. Its function as a possible amulet is investigated using previous research that studies the symbolic significance of the Gorgon, as well as tracing its background and examination of the Gorgon myth to find possible connections with other mythical creatures.

Abstract:
Fluid-structure interactions are important in a wide range of applications and, due to their complexity, need extensive experimental and computational research. One such example comes from crickets, which have evolutionarily developed an excellent micro-air-flow sensory system. Understanding principles of the cricket' micro-air-flow sensor will help design and manufacture artificial sensors. This thesis focuses on improving and validating a Penalty Immersed Boundary (PIB) model of the cricket sensory system, which consists of hundreds of filiform hairs. Previous efforts by others have modeled the filiform hair as a rigid inverted pendulum. Advantages to the PIB approach over previous models include a flexible fluid solver (previous models used an idealized, analytical flow field), the filiform hairs are not required to be completely rigid, and, most importantly, the entire cerci and all the filiform hairs can be modeled. The first goal was to improve the precision and accuracy of modeling a single filiform hair by adjusting model parameters so that the model predictions more accurately fit experimental data. A second goal was to model a portion of a full cercus based on filiform hair data from a real cricket and use the model to determine the interactions occurring between multiple hairs and identify any evolutionary optimization of the cercal system.

Abstract:
Significant differences in achievement among ethnic groups persist on the eighth-grade science Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). The WASL measures academic performance in science using both scenario and stand-alone question types. Previous research suggests that presenting target items connected to an authentic context, like scenario question types, can increase science achievement scores especially in underrepresented groups and thus help to close the achievement gap. The purpose of this study was to identify significant differences in performance between gender and ethnic subgroups by question type on the 2005 eighth-grade science WASL. MANOVA and ANOVA were used to examine relationships between gender and ethnic subgroups as independent variables with achievement scores on scenario and stand-alone question types as dependent variables. MANOVA revealed no significant effects for gender, suggesting that the 2005 eighth-grade science WASL was gender neutral. However, there were significant effects for ethnicity. ANOVA revealed significant effects for ethnicity and ethnicity by gender interaction in both question types. Effect sizes were negligible for the ethnicity by gender interaction. Large effect sizes between ethnicities on scenario question types became moderate to small effect sizes on stand-alone question types. This indicates the score advantage the higher performing subgroups had over the lower performing subgroups was not as large on stand-alone question types compared to scenario question types. A further comparison examined performance on multiple-choice items only within both question types. Similar achievement patterns between ethnicities emerged; however, achievement patterns between genders changed in boys' favor. Scenario question types appeared to register differences between ethnic groups to a greater degree than stand-alone question types. These differences may be attributable to individual differences in cognition, characteristics of test items themselves and/or opportunities to learn. Suggestions for future research are made.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis introduces the Klein-Gordon equation and pionic atoms through a historical review. It discusses properties of the equation and its continuity equation based on a comparison with the Schrödinger equation and its continuity equation. The conclusion that the Klein-Gordon equation is a relativistic extension of the Schrödinger equation for spin-0 particles is drawn. This makes it possible to derive a Klein-Gordon equation and Coulomb potential based model for pionic atoms. The transition energies and the charge density for a pionic atom are derived. The model and a Schrödinger equation model are used to draw conclusions on the differences between regular and pionic atoms. Numerical predictions of the models are compared to experimental data and the accuracy of the models is discussed. Properties of the pionic atom are discussed based on the radial charge density.

Umpleby, James. "Complex sine-Gordon theory : solitons, defects and boundaries." Thesis, Durham University, 2008. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2062/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents research into the properties and features of the complex sine- Gordon theory. The CSG theory is a dimensional integrable held theory that admits soliton solutions which carry a Noether charge due to the U(I) invariance of the theory. Integrable CSG defects and boundaries are constructed and interactions between solitons, defects and boundaries are analysed at the classical and quantum level. The introduction of defects into the theory is facilitated by a new Backlund transformation involving two parameters. Defect conditions, constructed so they maintain the integrability of the theory and found to be exactly the BT, are used to sew two CSG theories together. How solitons interact with the defect is investigated, in particular whether as in the SG theory solitons can be absorbed and emitted by the defect. The classical time-delay and phase-shift are calculated for soliton-defect and particle-defect scattering. Using the CSG defect to dress the Dirichlet boundary a new CSG boundary theory is produced. Its integrability is checked by the explicit construction of conserved charges. The various interactions between solitons and the boundary are analysed, compared and contrasted with the defect theory. Finally aspects of the quantum CSG boundary theory are examined, culminating in a conjecture for the quantum reflection matrix for a Q = -1-1 soliton reflecting from an unexcited boundary. Reflection and boundary bootstrap procedures are used to generate the general reflection matrix for any charged soliton reflecting from any excited boundary

Full text
Abstract:
Three different aspects of the sinh-Gordon model are explored in this thesis. We begin, in chapter one, with a summary of the model and the necessary background. Chapter two studies the model with two boundary conditions. Two approaches are presented to investigate the reflection factors off the boundaries and the energy of the theory. In chapter three, perturbation theory is developed to study the theory with one general boundary condition. A contribution to the quantum reflection factor is obtained and compared with the result obtained for the special boundary condition. Chapters four and five investigate the supersymmetric extension of the model in the presence of a single boundary. Firstly, the classical limits of the supersymmetric reflection matrices are checked. The exact reflection factors are studied perturbatively up to the second order of the coupling constant. Secondly, the perturbation theory and the path integral formalism are employed in the supersymmetric model to study the quantum reflection factors. We conclude with a brief sixth chapter describing the outlook for further investigations.

MacIntyre, Alistair. "On the integrability of the sine-Gordon system." Thesis, Durham University, 1997. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5011/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the integrability of the sine-Gordon system of nonlinear partial differential equations when the dependent variables are subject to some very particular boundary conditions. In chapter 1 the sine-Gordon system is introduced and, with N ϵ Z, P, Q ϵ R, the sets of initial-boundary value problems A(_N) and B(_P,Q) are defined. In the set A(_N) at the spatial variable x is unbounded and the boundary conditions are fixed by initially choosing the topological charge N. This set of problems is the one usually associated with the sine-Gordon system. In the set B(_P,Q) the spatial coordinate is constrained to the semi-line (-oo,0) and there exists two boundary parameters P,Q ϵ R to be chosen a priori. It is the study of this second set of initial-boundary value problems for arbitrary P, Q which forms all the original work of this dissertation. The study presented here is primarily concerned with the development of three separate inverse scattering methods for solving these sets of initial-boundary value problems. The first of these is developed in chapter 3 and is applicable to a subset of the problems in A(_N). The method is the one usually associated with the sine-Gordon system and studies the asymptotics of the initial data as x → ±oo. It is included in this thesis for completeness and as background for the original material which follows. Next, in chapters 4 and 5, the inverse scattering methods appropriate to initial-boundary value problems in subsets of B(_P,O) and B(_P,Q#O) are constructed. In these cases it is important to realise that it is only possible to study the asymptotics of the initial data as x → -oo. Once these three methods have been formulated they are used to find soliton solutions and infinite sets of integrals of motion for these boundary value problems. When a boundary is present at x = 0 the interaction of the solitons with this boundary is studied. These topics are addressed in chapter 6. Finally in chapter 7 the question of the integrability of both sets of problems is addressed. By interpreting the various inverse scattering methods in terms of canonical coordinate transformations of phase space it is seen that the existence of such methods can be viewed as a constructive proof of the integrability of these boundary value problems.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we analyze the conditions of existence of the phenomenon of nonlinear supratransmission in two different models: a modified fifth-order Klein-Gordon system and a modified sine-Gordon system. The modified models considered here are those with mixed coupling, the pure linear coupling being associated with a nonlinear coupling. In particular, we quantify numerically the influence of the non-linear coupling coefficient on the threshold amplitude which triggers the phenomenon of non-linear supratransmission. Our main result shows that in both models, when the nonlinear coupling coefficient increases, the threshold amplitude triggering the phenomenon of nonlinear supratransmission decreases

Abstract:
Despite being recognized as one of the most important compositions in the twentieth¬ century wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite presents many obstacles for the conductor and ensemble members. Since its initial publication in 1924, the piece has contained many discrepancies of pitch, articulation, rhythm, dynamics, and phrase completion that appear in the score as well as the parts. Although the work was reissued by Boosey & Hawkes in 1960 and 1991, many of the original errors remained intact. The sheer amount of inconsistencies causes great difficulties for the musicians involved in the rehearsal process, slowing efficiency and resulting in a frustrating impediment to a quality performance. The primary purpose of this study was the creation of a critical edition of Jacob's William Byrd Suite that eliminates errors of extant editions, incorporates modern instrumentation, and considers the source material. To accomplish this, the present project looks at all sources, including the autograph manuscript, orchestral version, published editions, and errata. The editorial process examines the governing philosophy, subsequent editorial decisions and indications, and the final organization of the parts. The study concludes with the inclusion of the full score of the new critical edition.

In this thesis we study the asymptotic properties for the solution of the Cauchy problem for the Klein-Gordon equation with non-effective time-dependent potential. The main goal was define a suitable energy related to the Cauchy problem and derive decay estimates for such energy. Strichartz’ estimates and results of scattering and modified scattering was established. The C m theory and the stabilization condition was applied to treat the case where the coefficient of the potential term has very fast oscillations. Moreover, we consider a semi-linear wave model scale-invariant time- dependent with mass and dissipation, in this step we used linear estimates related with the semi-linear model to prove global existence (in time) of energy solutions for small data and we show a blow-up result for a suitable choice of the coefficients.

Tzamtzis, Georgios. "The complex sine-Gordon model on a half line." Thesis, Durham University, 2003. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3086/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, we study the complex sine-Gordon model on a half line. The model in the bulk is an integrable (l+1) dimensional field theory which is U(1) gauge invariant and comprises a generalisation of the sine-Gordon theory. It accepts soliton and breather solutions. By introducing suitably selected boundary conditions we may consider the model on a half line. Through such conditions the model can be shown to remain integrable and various aspects of the boundary theory can be examined. The first chapter serves as a brief introduction to some basic concepts of integrability and soliton solutions. As an example of an integrable system with soliton solutions, the sine-Gordon model is presented both in the bulk and on a half line. These results will serve as a useful guide for the model at hand. The introduction finishes with a brief overview of the two methods that will be used on the fourth chapter in order to obtain the quantum spectrum of the boundary complex sine-Gordon model. In the second chapter the model is properly introduced along with a brief literature review. Different realisations of the model and their connexions are discussed. The vacuum of the theory is investigated. Soliton solutions are given and a discussion on the existence of breathers follows. Finally the collapse of breather solutions to single solitons is demonstrated and the chapter concludes with a different approach to the breather problem. In the third chapter, we construct the lowest conserved currents and through them we find suitable boundary conditions that allow for their conservation in the presence of a boundary. The boundary term is added to the Lagrangian and the vacuum is reexamined in the half line case. The reflection process of solitons from the boundary is studied and the time-delay is calculated. Finally we address the existence of boundary-bound states. In the fourth chapter we study the quantum complex sine-Gordon model. We begin with a brief overview of the theory in the bulk where the semi-classical spectrum and an exact S'-matrix are presented. Following that we use the stationary phase method to derive the semi-classical spectrum of boundary bound states. The bootstrap method is used as an alternative approach to obtain the same spectrum. The results are discussed and compared. The final chapter consists of a general discussion on open questions and problems of the model, and some proposals for further research.

The concept of Dark Matter arises to explain an anomaly in the rotation curve of spiral galaxies, since then, researchers around the world have been trying to detect the particle that composes this matter. Without success in the detections, some theories appeared to explain the existence of both Dark Matter and Dark Energy, the last one is responsible for the accelerated expansion of the Universe. In this dissertation we present one of these theories. Here we suggest that the Universe behaves in a di erent way with which we are accustomed, for this we have made use of the general relativity and the Klein-Gordon's nonlinear equation, and then we admit that the Universe is immersed in a relativistic superfluid so we can theoretically explain Dark Matter and Dark Energy.

Abstract:
The Über - marionette is the most celebrated and controversial proposal of Edward Gordon Craig . It begins from an initial premise that sentenced the actor to death, identifying the actor as a hindrance to the development of the theater. At the same time develops positively into pedagogy, although hidden in his writings. We decided to call it \"Pedagogy of the death of the actor\", understanding the paradox contained in this expression as an intellectual characteristic of the Gordon Craig\'s system of thinking. By creating an imagistic representation for his critique to the theater of his time, Craig formulated simultaneously a proposal , in allegorical form , of a revolutionary design for the resizing of theater art as a whole. An innovative pedagogy based on the relationship between the actor and inert material. Much of the longevity of the Über-marionette\'s revolutionary potential is due to the methodical use of some raw materials: The first is an incisive critique of the work of the actor and the theater practice generally. The second one, the language of puppet theater, and its evocative nature of rituality and dialectical properties. The third one, a proposal for a complete reconstruction of the theatrical practice and aesthetics, claiming for a revival of the art of the actor and the emergence of the figure of Theatrical Stage Director. This interface with the East was always present in the thought of Craig and found in Coomaraswamy an important interlocutor who challenged him about his the Über-marionette and his approach on the eastern theater art. The cautious reaction from Craig regarding exchanges between traditions begins the investigations on the theme of intercultural theater and points out its idiosyncrasies. This thesis points out the relationship between the Über-marionette and the icon of the hindu performing arts, the god Shiva Nataraja, and the book that rules the practice of traditional scenic in India, the Natya Shastra. We take as a practical example to try to concretely evaluate this dialogical encounter, the Kathakali theater classic male style from southern India. Then, we analyze the pedagogical tradition for Indian theatrical art (Guru system) which supported Coomaraswamy\'s argument founding his critical to the creation f the Über - marionette. And we evaluate if the Kathakali theater could be seen as an embodiment of Coomaraswamy\'s argument. And if this embodiment answers Craig\'s demand for an actor Über - marionette. Within this analysis, we observe the asian theatre\'s process of formal stylization and codification of its scene and acting. This dialogue between Gordon Craig and Coomaraswamy was the precursor of a complex interface that even today presents its idiosyncrasies and difficult framing . Exemplifying the cyclicality of this issue, we redeemed the clash between Rustom Bharucha, harsh critic of Western attempts to Interculturalism and Richard Schechner , one of the mentors of the approaches between western theater and the traditional theater forms of the East.

Abstract:
