In this work, we define the ultrahyperbolic Klein-Gordon operator of order α on the function f by T α ( f ) = W α ∗ f , where α ∈ C , W α is the ultrahyperbolic Klein-Gordon kernel, the symbol ∗ denotes the convolution, and f ∈ S , S is the Schwartz space of functions. Our purpose of this work is to study the convolution of W α and obtain the operator L α = T α − 1 such that if T α ( f ) = φ , then L α φ = f .

Abstract:
This commentary explores Robert Gordon's “Critical Legal Histories” from the perspective of the discipline of history. It argues that we are still stalled at the intellectual juncture that Gordon described so well twenty-five years ago because functionalism and the resulting problems that Gordon addresses in the area of sociolegal studies also pervade the discipline of history. The results reinforce the divide between sociolegal studies and other kinds of historical studies that tend to inhibit the conceptual transformation that Gordon advocates and to marginalize legal studies within the discipline of history.

Jakub Gordon), Agaton Giller, Karol Ruprecht, Stefan Dobrycz, Andrzej Deskur, Bronisław Zaleski, Antoni i Michał Zalescy, Anna Modzelewska i jej brat, Aleksander Hercen, Piotr Ławrow. (m.in. Gillera, Gordona, B. Zaleskiego). W swoich wystąpieniach i listach wielokrotnie zwracał uwagę na konieczność upamiętniania „wygnańców sybirskich” i udzielania im wsparcia – modlitewnego i materialnego, a także utworzenia Towarzystwa Syberyjskiego, „gdzie by dośrodkowały się wszystkie pojedyncze wycierpienia i zdobycze”. Otoczenie sybiraków opieką państwa i umożliwienie im powrotu do ojczyzny stało się nawet jednym z punktów Norwidowskiego projektu zasad ustrojowo-społecznych przyszłej Polski.

Abstract W. Terrence Gordon examines the notion of translation problems by comparing the French and Italian versions of Michaels’ work. He begins by examining the translation of geological terms which, although they cause no translation problems on a strictly scientific level, are a cause of divergence in the French and Italian versions because they express metaphorically a main theme of the novel: memory and the modifying effect that the past has on the present. Gordon also examines the strategy of each translator with regards to word play, and in particular homonyms, anagrams and palindromes, which are rendered anywhere from a strictly didactic translation to a translation based on various linguistic resources and creative expression. Gordon reminds us that we are invited to study the stylistique interne of English-French and English-Italian through the two translations.

Abstract:
In 1895, self-trained mining engineer William K. Gordon, Sr (1862-1949) conducted a geological reconnaissance trip to far West Texas in search of coal deposits. A report from that trip reveals how Gordon's training in geology (acquired largely through reading) and his intrinsic interest in stratigraphy and geomorphology helped him effectively advise the Texas and Pacific Coal Company about the bleak prospects there. In 2005, using Gordon's never-before consulted field report, the author retraced, or rather re-hiked, Gordon's route. Gordon's report features hand-drawn maps and a geological cross-section that were field checked and compared to later data. The author concludes that Gordon enthusiastically, but often inaccurately, described the complex petrology in the rugged, semi-arid Eagle Mountains. Gordon was evidently vexed by how to identify some of the highly varied extrusive igneous rocks here. Nevertheless, Gordon's work should be recognized as the earliest serious geological reconnaissance in a remote area that would much later (1963) be studied in detail by geologists who had at their disposal considerably better tools to analyze the petrology, and possessed a growing awareness of plate tectonics that were unknown in Gordon's time.

Abstract:
Micheál mac Liammóir (1898-1978) and Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966) shared many similarities: both were actors, designers, directors, and writers, and both rejected the realist tradition dominant in the theatre of their times. Craig’s developments in design throughout Europe laid a path for mac Liammóir to follow; indeed, mac Liammóir begins his autobiography All for Hecuba (1946) with the claim, ‘I would become [...] a Gordon Craig’. However, their affinities were not only in design and other aspects of theatre practice but in their shared artistic beliefs and performances of identity. This article will examine what mac Liammóir might have meant by ‘becoming a Gordon Craig’, first by considering Craig’s reputation and comparing both artists’ biographies. By contextualising Craig’s collaboration with W. B. Yeats at the Abbey Theatre, and Yeats’ influence on mac Liammóir, the article seeks to define the shared beliefs of mac Liammóir and Craig. Finally, by placing mac Liammóir’s reinvention and performance of self within a wider modernist context, an argument will be made for considering mac Liammóir in light of Craig’s concept of ‘The Über-Marionette’. Reportaż śledczy Franciszkańska 3 Marcina Gutowskiego w telewizji TVN24 o stosunku papieża Jana Pawła II do pedofilii w Kościele katolickim wywołał ogólnonarodową dyskusję, która doprowadziła do swoistych zachowań w sferze politycznej i społecznej.

AbstractThe chaotic behaviour of the parametrically driven one-dimensional sine-Gordon equation with periodic boundary conditions is studied. The initial condition is u(x, 0) = ƒ(x), ut (x, 0) = 0 where ƒ is the breather solution of the one-dimensional sine-Gordon equation at t = 0. We vary the amplitude of the driving force, the frequency of the driving force and the damping constant. For appropriate values of the driving force, frequency and damping constant chaotic behaviour with respect to the time-evolution of w(x = fixed, t) can be found. The space structure u(t = fixed, x) changes with increasing driving force from a zero mode structure to a breather-like structure consisting of a few modes.

Abstract:
Abstract:
We introduce a new type of splitting method for semilinear partial differential equations. The method is analyzed in detail for the case of the two-dimensional static sine-Gordon equation describing a large area Josephson junction with overlap current feed and external magnetic field. The solution is separated into an explicit term that satisfies the one-dimensional sine-Gordon equation in the y-direction with boundary conditions determined by the bias current and a residual which is expanded using modes in the y-direction, the coefficients of which satisfy ordinary differential equations in x with boundary conditions given by the magnetic field. We show by direct comparison with a two-dimensional solution that this method converges and that it is an efficient way of solving the problem. The convergence of the y expansion for the residual is compared for Fourier cosine modes and the normal modes associated to the static one-dimensional sine-Gordon equation and we find a faster convergence for the latter. Even for such large widths as w=10 two such modes are enough to give accurate results.

Gordon and Wilton recently proved that the double D of a free group F amalgamated along a cyclic subgroup C of F contains a surface group if a generator w of C satisfies a certain 3-manifold theoretic condition, called virtually geometricity. Wilton and the author defined the polygonality of w which also guarantees the existence of a surface group in D. In this paper, virtual geometricity is shown to imply polygonality up to descending to a finite-index subgroup of F. That the converse does not hold will follow from an example formerly considered by Manning.

Abstract In contrast to Hamiltonian perturbation theory which changes the time evolution, “spacelike deformations” proceed by changing the translations (momentum operators). The free Maxwell theory is only the first member of an infinite family of spacelike deformations of the complex massless Klein–Gordon quantum field into fields of higher helicity. A similar but simpler instance of spacelike deformation allows to increase the mass of scalar fields.

Abstract:
AbstractA conjecture of Gromov states that a one-ended word-hyperbolic group must contain a subgroup that is isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface. Recent papers by Gordon and Wilton and by Kim and Wilton give sufficient conditions for hyperbolic surface groups to be embedded in a hyperbolic Baumslag double G. Using Nielsen cancellation methods based on techniques from previous work by the second author, we prove that a hyperbolic orientable surface group of genus 2 is embedded in a hyperbolic Baumslag double if and only if the amalgamated word W is a commutator: that is, W = [U, V] for some elements U, V ∈ F. Furthermore, a hyperbolic Baumslag double G contains a non-orientable surface group of genus 4 if and only if W = X2Y2 for some X, Y ∈ F. G can contain no non-orientable surface group of smaller genus.

Abstract:
The problem which motivated the writing of this paper is that of finding structure behind the decomposition of the sl3 representation spaces V* ⊗ W = Hom(V, W) for finite dimensional irreducible sl3-modules V and W. For sl2 this extends the classical Clebsch-Gordon problem. The question has been considered for sl3 in a computational way in [5]. In this paper we build a conceptual algebraic framework going beyond the enveloping algebra of sl3.For each dominant integral weight α let Vα be an irreducible representation of sl3 of highest weight α. It is well known that, for weights α, μ, λ, the multiplicity of Vλ in Hom(Vα, Vα+μ) is bounded by the multiplicity of μ in Vλ, with equality for generic α. This suggests the possibility of a single construction of highest weight vectors of weight X in Hom(Vα, Vα+μ) which is valid for all a.

In this paper, we give infinitely many non-Haken hyperbolic genus three 3-manifolds each of which has a finite cover whose induced Heegaard surface from some genus three Heegaard surface of the base manifold is reducible but can be compressed into an incompressible surface. This result supplements [A. Casson and C. Gordon, Reducing Heegaard splittings, Topology Appl. 27 (1987) 275–283] and extends [J. Masters, W. Menasco and X. Transformations in Contemporary France in the Context of Considering Cultural Borders – A Cultural Perspective in Selected Case Studies Culture in France, as well as its society, is changing. Mobility, the decline of traditional religiosity, and the takeover of global cultural patterns are just a few manifestations of the evolution of French contemporary culture. Based on the concept of culture transfer by French scientists, Michel Espagne and Michael Werner, and Gordon Mathews’ “cultural supermarket”, the author will present examples and effects of infiltration of foreign cultures and attempts to maintain the distinctiveness and cultural identity of the French.

Abstract:
We introduce a modified version of the disordered Klein-Gordon lattice model, having two parameters for controlling the disorder strength: D, which determines the range of the coefficients of the on-site potentials, and W, which defines the strength of the nearestneighbor interactions. We fix W = 4 and investigate how the properties of the system's normal modes change as we approach its ordered version, i.e. D → 0. We show that the probability density distribution of the normal mode's frequencies takes a 'U'-shaped profile as D decreases. Furthermore, we use two quantities for estimating the mode's spatial extent, the so-called localization volume V (which is related to the mode's second moment) and the mode's participation number P. We show that both quantities scale as ∝ D−2 when D approaches zero and we numerically verify a proportionality relation between them as V/P ≈ 2.6.

Abstract:
AbstractJames Gordon Bennett Jr (1841–1918), recognized as one of the most important individuals in the development of popular journalism in the United States, was proprietor of the New York Herald, perhaps the most influential American newspaper of his time. The man who sent Henry Morton Stanley to Africa to find David Livingstone, he was also significant in American Arctic exploration during the second half of the 19th century. He played a role in the organization or funding of five Arctic expeditions, including the Jeannette expedition under George W. De Long. Although his interest in exploration was primarily a means to increase the circulation of his newspaper, by his sponsorship Bennett helped contribute to knowledge of the Arctic. More importantly, through extensive coverage in the Herald, he helped create national interest in the Arctic and in polar exploration in general.
