Curtis, Meilin Chung. "Good Grapes - Good Wine." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2010. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1759.

Full text
Abstract:
Good grapes are required to make good wine. Quality wines start in quality vineyards. Vineyard design, installation, and operation, including site location, trellis options, vine selection, and canopy management, along with when to harvest are discussed. While winemaking is the final phase in the pursuit of the winemaker's passion, it is but a simple formula. The beginning of a good wine is in a good vineyard. This study includes a financial projection for a 10-acre vineyard as well as for starting an onsite, complementary sized winery. Even though many small-to-medium vineyards-to-wineries have started over the last decade, the reason to enter into this type of business is not profit, but passion. Profits are relatively small for the time and labor investment, but the unique wine creations that result are amazing, for the winemaker and the one who enjoys the result.

Garratt, Dean Douglas. "Good citizenship or good research?" Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.319839.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about a journey that begins as an investigation into "good citizenship", develops into an analysis of the meaning of "good", and then evolves into an exploration of issuesc oncernedw ith the nature of "good research". In essence,t he thesis can be split into two interlinked parts. Both "halves" serve a dual purpose in that they represent findings and data in the journey. The first "half' explores the theme of "good citizenship" within the context of the cross-curricular themes. It adds to our understanding of these issues by demystifying the ideological tensions existing within and between guidance documentation suggested by the National Curriculum Council to deliver the "whole curriculum" for English and Welsh schools after the 1988 Education Reform Act. These findings later serve as data in providing a context from which to reinterpret and advance our understanding of "good research". The epiphany in this journey occured when the meaning of "good" in "GOOD citizenship" was placed under scrutiny. In discovering that "good" has a multifarious meaning, which is not reducible to a single definition, the substantive focus of the thesis changed. This change is reflected in the upper and lower case lettering displayed within the title. By deemphasising the importance of "good" in "good RESEARCH", a paradigmatic shift in thinking is symbolized. The second "half' of this thesis investigates the nature of "good research" and makes two contributions to our knowledge of interpretive research. Using three perspectives of a single set of data as a working apparatus, the philosophy of Gadamerian (1979) hermeneutics is explored and taken beyond our current understanding. Part of this exploration involves applying the criteria of authenticity and coherence to the research. However, in discovering the inadequacy of these predetermined guidelines, the idea of situationally derived criteria is developed. Finally, it is suggested that the criteria for judging the quality of research can never be determined in advance of meaning coming into being. Instead, such criteria are contextually bound and can only be seen as post-hoc rational guidelines.

Abstract:
Global raw material extraction has accelerated since the 1950s, causing resource depletion, ecosystem degra- dation, pollution, and climate change. To reduce such impacts, the economic drivers of material use must be addressed. Although economic growth often drives material use to increase, this increase can be counter- acted by dematerialization. This study explores whether dematerialization can achieve sustainable material footprints in Sweden by 2050, considering different scenarios of economic growth. Environmentally extended multi-regional input-output analysis was used to calculate the Swedish material footprint from 1995 to 2011. Structural decomposition analysis was used to quantify how much dematerialization, economic growth, con- sumption and trade patterns, and population drove the changes in the material footprint. Based on previous literature, 6 tons of materials per person was used as a sustainability target in three backcasting scenarios, reflecting degrowth, growth, and growth with ambitious shifts towards less material intensive consumption and trade patterns, respectively. The Swedish material footprint increased from 211 to 279 Mt from 1995 to 2011. While relative dematerialization did occur, economic growth caused material use to grow. If the economy degrows, the 2050 target can be reached with dematerialization rates of 0.7 times the previous rates. To reach the target under continued economic growth, dematerialization rates must increase by a factor of 1.8-2.7, depending on the extent of shifts to less material intensive consumption and trade patterns. Although further research is needed to examine whether such unprecedented rates of dematerialization are feasible, the results suggest that degrowth must be considered.

Winchell, Meghan. "Good food, good fun, and good girls: USO hostesses and World War Two." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280392.

Full text
Abstract:
Historical scholarship has shown how the state and media mobilized women into "men's" roles including soldier and industrial worker during World War II, but little work has been done on the ways in which quasi-state organizations such as the United Service Organizations (USO) mobilized them to perform "women's" work. In the United States, the USO offered wholesome recreation to millions of servicemen outside of camp in their off duty hours. USO hostesses conducted work that helped to maintain the role of the virtuous woman in this time of crisis. Senior hostesses, married women over age 35, mothered servicemen by sewing insignias on their uniforms, and by baking sweets and making sandwiches for them. Senior hostesses also selected junior hostesses and chaperoned their interactions with servicemen. Junior hostesses, single women ages 16 to 25, comforted servicemen by serving as compliant dance and game partners, as well as eager listeners. The USO functioned as a normative force that emphasized women's domesticity and sought to contain female sexual activity to marriage. The USO assumed that white middle-class women were inherently sexually respectable and feminine. It groomed these "good girls" to represent the USO alongside a federal crackdown on female prostitution and the arrest of thousands of pickups girls suspected of passing venereal disease to servicemen. Junior hostesses, in turn, used the USO to explore a safe form of sexual expressiveness at the same time that they contributed their basic sexual services to the federal government and military. These institutions were the primary benefactors of senior and junior hostesses' unpaid morale work. Their work helped to humanize the military experience for servicemen. This project investigates race and class issues within the USO, along with sexuality and gender, because these categories were paramount in the hostess selection process and interactions between servicemen and hostesses. USO publications and government records form the basis of the archival research for this project. This project also draws on 35 oral interviews conducted by the author with former hostesses, and questionnaires from an additional 35 former hostesses.

Thomas, Geoff. "Accuracy in empathic and trait judgements: The quest for the good judge, good target, good trait and good relationship." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4785.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examined the moderators of judgement accuracy in three studies. Study 1 tested three moderators of empathic accuracy assessed during close relationship interaction: (1) the ability of the judge, (2) the readability of the target, and (3) the level of acquaintanceship. The design involved multiple perceivers judging multiple targets. Fifty dating couples reviewed videotapes of their prior problem-solving discussions and described both their own on-line cognitions and those of their partners. Fifty friends of the couples and 50 strangers later inferred the on-line cognitions of the same dating couples while observing the videotapes of their interactions. In addition, all three groups observed another videotape of two married couples' problem-solving interactions (strangers to the entire sample) and attempted the same empathic accuracy task. As predicted, the results revealed evidence for the good judge and good relationship, but not the good target. Increased relationship closeness was associated with higher accuracy. Both attributional complexity and verbal intelligence predicted empathic performance (but at different levels of acquaintanceship) and women were consistently superior to men. Several mediational models were tested, the results of which showed that female partners' problem-specific disclosure to the friend mediated the link between (a) female partners' attributional complexity and their empathic accuracy, and (b) friends' closeness to the female partner and their empathic accuracy.

Gibson, Alice. "Can a good manager be a good person?" Thesis, Linköping University, Centre for Applied Ethics, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-6970.

Full text
Abstract:

In this paper I explore the question ‘can a good manager be a good person?’ the answer is yes, no, or to a greater or lesser degree. Ultimately it depends on the ends at which the business, in which the manager works, aims towards. For these ends underpin what is ‘rational’ for how a manager should behalf. If a business’ end goal is purely profit maximisation then there is no room for a manager to take moral considerations into account, and therefore be a good person. If a business sees itself as a ‘practice’, consciously aiming to promote the social good the answer is yes, a good manager can be a good person. There are those businesses, and their managers, that fall somewhere in between these two ideal-types.

Mendoza, Waldo. "The Peruvian Miracle: Good luck or good policies?" Economía, 2014. http://repositorio.pucp.edu.pe/index/handle/123456789/117224.

Full text
Abstract:
The Peruvian economy has performed extraordinarily over the last 10 years. The 2012 per capita GDP is 66 percent above that of 2002, and more than double its 1992 level. In a long term perspective, the cumulative growth of GDP per capita recorded in the last 10 years has been the strongest since 1900. This is the «Peruvian miracle». This paper aims to find the determinants of the Peruvian miracle. In theory, countries’ macroeconomic performance can be determined by two factors: i) the «good (bad) luck effect» that relates to the international context, which may be favorable or unfavorable, and ii) the «good (bad) policies effects», associated with short-term macroeconomic policies or structural reforms, which are policies that alter the current development model. The hypothesis of this work is that the Peruvian miracle of the last 10 years has much to do with good luck, and, in part, with good short-term macroeconomic policies.

Abstract:
This thesis and its corresponding art installation, Lessons from Ziggy, attempts to deconstruct the variables prevalent within several complex systems, analyze their transformations, and propose a methodology for reasserting the soap box within the display pedestal. In this text, there are several key and specific examples of the transformation of various signifiers (i.e. media-bred fear’s transformation into a political tactic of surveillance, contemporary freneticism’s transformation into complacency, and community’s transformation into nationalism as a state weapon). In this essay, all of these concepts are contextualized within the exponential growth of new technologies. That is to say, all of these semiotic developments must be framed within the post-Internet sphere.

Abstract:
The Good Villain is the first 100 pages of a novel in progress. The novel is a parody of the biography genre and a satire of American culture, specifically Southern American culture. The biographer, David Johnson, travels to Starkville, Mississippi to interview and interrogate fictional author, Avis James, and his friends and family. The critical introduction of the same name describes how authors Lewis Carroll, Edgar Allan Poe, and Vladimir Nabokov have influenced the novel in terms of the whimsical, the grotesque, and the humorous.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Robert Murphy
Luxury Good Consumer Trends and Advertising Spending Outcomes on the Economy This paper will explore how consumer trends in luxury goods affect the overall economy of the United States and vice versa. In economics, a luxury good is a good for which demand increases more than proportionally as income rises. Luxury goods are said to have high income elasticity of demand. In other words, as people become wealthier, they will buy more and more of the luxury good. Luxury goods are highly sensitive to economic upturns and downturns; therefore, the state of the economy will often shape consumer spending on luxury goods. However, consumer trends often fuel the economy as well. The demand for luxury goods creates jobs in manufacturing, advertising, event planning and many other areas of specialty that can contribute to a rise in GDP. An increase in exports due to a demand for American luxury goods would have a similar effect. The goal will be to discover any patterns in the data and perhaps to formulate an economic model that will expose the relationship between consumer trends in luxury goods and their effect on the economy

Abstract:
This paper will provide a far-ranging analysis of the relevant aspects of the filmmaking process as it pertains to the development and production of the thesis project, The Good Killing. This analysis will include both a detailed, biographic overview of the making of the film, as well as an in-depth critique of the creative decision-making and practical methodology that guided the production. In this regard, special attention will be first be given to how the project was initially conceived, and, broadly speaking, what was originally intended. Secondly, proceeding sections will examine key elements of the filmmaker’s technical planning, performance, and working philosophy, specifically citing directing style, cinematography, sound and editing. Through this evaluative process, the film will be judged from the standpoint of both concept and execution in order to determine overall success.

Abstract:
My dissertation is a memoir based on my childhood experiences growing up with a mentally ill mother. She exhibited violence both passive and aggressive, and the memoir explores my relationship with her and my relationship with the world through her. "Damned Good Daughter" developed with my interest in creative nonfiction as a genre. I came to it after studying poetry, discovering that creative nonfiction offers a form that accommodates both the lyric impulse in poetry and the shaping impulse of story in fiction. In addition, the genre makes a place for the first person I in relation to the order and meaning of a life story. Using reverse chronology, my story begins with the present and regresses toward childhood, revealing the way life experiences with a mentally ill parent build on one another.

We also deal with the problem of determining the Arf closure of a set of vectors and of a good semigroup, extending the concept of characters of an Arf numerical semigroup to Arf good semigroups. Furthermore we present some procedures to calculate the set of the Arf good semigroups with a given conductor and with a given genus. Finally we give an effcient algorithm for the computation of the Arf Closure of an algebroid curve with more than one branch.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to create a distinctively Aristotelian-Thomistic ethical schema. I shall do this in four stages. First, in chapter one, I am going to present a summary of Aristotelian metaphysics. I will present a slightly Thomistic take on Aristotelian metaphysics specifically when it comes to the distinction between accidental and substantial form. However, I will present a more classically Aristotelian account when it comes to the source of teleology. Along the way I will explore whether science can disprove any aspects of Aristotelian metaphysics. In particular, I will examine whether science can show that there are no final causes, and whether evolution poses problems for the Aristotelian concept of form and essence in biology. Second, in chapter two, I shall explain the nature of goodness within this metaphysical schema. I will also engage with competing accounts of the nature of goodness and will argue that my Aristotelian account is superior. Third, in chapter three, I will list and defend my account of the basic goods. I will also explain why certain things, such as pleasure and freedom, are not included in my list of the basic goods. I will then explain how and why they do fit into my schema. Finally, in chapter four, I will move onto duties. I will show how we can derive a list of pro tanto duties from the Aristotelian ethical schema. Along the way I will also briefly sketch out an account of human rights. My ethical theory will differ from many contemporary neo-Aristotelians in that it will place emphasis on, and smoothly follow from, Aristotelian metaphysics. At the same time, my ethical theory will differ from more traditional neo-Aristotelians and the medieval neo-Aristotelians in the way that it reconciles an Aristotelian ethical schema with a non-natural account of goodness and a reasons-based account of obligation.

Abstract:
Mobile games present a great opportunity for organizations with sustainability agendas to spread their message and generate revenue towards its cause, as they are the best money generating apps. This can be done through designing so-called persuasive games. A major challenge when designing such a game is that the sustainability agenda might compromise the gaming experience, rendering an uninteresting game. The present research explores what could trigger both an interesting game that also compromises a do-good agenda by designing and play testing two versions of a persuasive game called Aqua Escape. Results indicated that users felt more excited about the game once they knew about the social agenda. They also wanted more information on the social agenda integrated into the app than was already there.

Andersson, Matthew A. "Expecting good things and feeling good : a sociological approach to health inequalities." Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1287.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation illuminates health inequalities by focusing on two motivational goods. One is expecting good things to happen: being optimistic, in other words. Another is feeling good, in terms of emotional well-being. While previous research has demonstrated the value of these psychological resources to understanding social inequality, basic questions remain about how and why these resources bring about health inequalities. In Chapter Two, I use data from the 2005 Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) to examine interactions between optimism and autonomy at work as they relate to psychological distress and positive emotion. I utilize my results to shed light on how autonomy matters to mental health: findings are consistent with autonomy as a lack of oppression or as a "strong" social situation, rather than autonomy as an opportunity to thrive. In Chapter Three, I test hypotheses about optimism in the context of relationship- and work-based crises, using data from the 2004 General Social Survey. I find that dispositional optimism is associated with increases in self-esteem and health; its effect on these outcomes intensifies around the time of relationship crises and is stronger for women than for men. In Chapter Four, I draw and build upon a capital activation perspective to argue that emotional well-being activates education. Using a representative panel sample of middle-aged adults (MIDUS: 1995-2005), I indeed find that emotional well-being activates education, leading to especially favorable gains in health, sense of control and voluntary association involvement - or, more strikingly, to no effect of education at low levels of well-being. Moreover, an auxiliary fixed-effects analysis of activation (based on the MIDUS 1995 Identical Twins sample) replicates these findings. In total, I find that capital activation is a powerful source of social stratification that rivals the importance of capital itself.

Abazi, Zihra <1997&gt. "Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Entrepreneurship: “good business for a good society”." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/19864.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to understand the important evolution of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility and the much newer concept of Social Entrepreneurship. These two together are the right path for a sustainable future economic development. In the past, Corporate Social Responsibility was perceived as nonmandatory and it was described as the voluntary integration of the social and environmental concerns of companies in their commercial operations and in their relations with partners, but later and especially nowadays, CSR is the corporate responsibility for its impact on the society. The goal of CSR is to identify, prevent and mitigate any negative consequences of corporate transactions on the environment. When reading the definition, it seems easy to understand, but in reality, it is much more complicated to recognize the players involved in the whole system. Today, when we talk about Corporate Social Responsibility, we include three important systems: economic, political and judicial. This means that not only the companies are responsible for their actions, but also the government and law institutions must intervene. We need to find a system of values very close to the business practices: Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Entrepreneurship mean “good business for a good society”.

Yos, Thomas S. "Educating for good judgment." Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/3048.

Full text
Abstract:
What should be the primary aims of education? How might these aims be realized? These are foundational questions which Plato raised long ago in his Republic. The first of these questions is a normative, and profoundly philosophical, one which provides guidance to the whole endeavor of education. The second of these questions is a pedagogical one which informs educators as to how their work can be best conducted. In this work I endeavor to answer these interlocking educational questions. I follow most closely in the footsteps of John Dewey. I believe that Dewey had it right when, decades ago, he argued that education ought to be concerned with the cultivation of good judgment. But here a difficulty arises. For "good judgment" is a complex philosophical concept which spills over into considerations of thinking, knowing, deciding, and acting. Despite the efforts of philosophers such as Aristotle, Kant, and Dewey, there is a lack of agreement about the precise meaning of good judgment. Before moving into matters of education, then, I first endeavor to vanquish this lack of conceptual clarity. What is good judgment? What are its elements? Can it, for that matter, even be cultivated? Having gotten clear on what good judgment is, I turn to matters of education. First, I argue that a vital task of education is the cultivation of good judgment. I then turn to the practical matter of how one might go about cultivating good judgment. The community of inquiry approach employed by The Philosophy for Children Program, I contend, is an effective pedagogical means through which to cultivate good judgment.

Abstract:
Implementations and installations of Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP-systems)are often time consuming and complex processes. Technicians who workwith installations of ERP-systems require tools and utilities in order to perform theirwork in a time efficient and qualitative manner. This study is performed at the company Industrial and Financial Systems (IFS) inLinköping and has focused on the technical documentation that describes theinstallation process, "IFS Installation Guide". This guide is one of the most importanttools available to facilitate the installation process of the ERP-system, IFSApplications. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and suggest improvements to the usability andworkflow aspects of IFS Installation Guide. This study is based on seven semistructuredinterviews and one observation with IFS employees working on variousconsultancy services within IFS ‘key regions’. The result from the interviews highlightsa number of problems, which have been analyzed and investigated together withrelevant literature. The findings of this study demonstrate that it is of utmost importance to have a cleartarget audience, easy channels for feedback and that information must be easy tofind in order to develop and maintain high quality in technical documentation.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the way the interrogator chooses method of interrogation based upon experience and how this in turn will affect legal certainty. The purpose is to examine how the experiences within the police force will be taken advantage of and how it is disseminated within the organization. The study was conducted in cooperation with the Police in Malmö. By interviewing interrogators and persons with first-rate knowledge about the subject the researcher has tried to get as extensive research material as possible. The results show that experience can affect legal certainty, but the extent of this has not been further investigated. Interrogators do not use a specific interrogation method but uses the free story that is a feature in both the PEACE-model and the cognitive interview method. Furthermore, the experiences within the Police force in Malmö was examined and the results show that the respondents want this to be disseminated to a higher extent. The respondents also expressed that further education was most important and desirable as the methods develop to the same extent as society.
