Abstract:
Preaching—defined as sermon writing, exegesis, or discursive skill—appears to be teachable. On the other hand, is preaching, defined as announcing the gospel, hence the mysteries of God and God's redemptive work, teachable? Preaching the gospel embodies and, at the same time, transforms the three primary features of aesthetic art: creativity, emotional world-engagement, and imagination. If these artistic features are gifts prior to any teaching, then we may doubt that pedagogy can facilitate preaching the gospel. At the same time, however, teachers of preaching can identify students' artistic powers, stir them up, and expose alien paradigms and rhetorics that divert preaching from the gospel, redirecting them toward those that embody the gospel's true aims. In this sense, preaching can be taught.

Abstract:
Emerging manifestations in contemporary studies regarding Pentecostal spirituality in Africa reveals two dramatic findings for scholarship. First, success in the Christian world is defined by prosperity gospel replete with economic message that wealth is a sign of God's blessing and a compensation for prayer as well as “sowing of seed”. Second, the notion of an abundant God and the propensity to claim innocence of any motive other than fulfilling God's will for human beings. Drawing upon an extensive contemporary research on prosperity doctrine and based on content analysis, this article examines prosperity teachings and claims and identifies ethical issues that relate to the doctrine. Findings reveals that though prosperity preachers use Bible to support their claims, prosperity gospel does not surmount social misery, poverty and corruption, rather, it entrenches the ills as exemplified in excessive incomes, lavish and flamboyant lifestyles of church leaders at the expense of impoverished church members.

Abstract:
Two issues must be considered together in missiology: the relationship of Jesus (of the Gospels) to the Gentiles and the necessity of rejection of the gospel by one's own people. The first issue has been treated as a puzzling side issue and the second simply neglected. The answer to both questions involves recognizing the necessity of rejection and persecution within Christian churches and the coming of God's kingdom as a continually present process.

Abstract:
Romans 9–11 is of great importance for understanding Paul's letter to Rome. Here Paul tackles the problem of the lack of Jewish response to the gospel—a problem not just of personal anguish, but also of God's faithfulness: If God's chosen people are not participating in the gospel, how confident can Gentiles be in the hope which they have placed in God's promises? Paul's response occurs in stages: Election always implies that some are chosen, and some are not; God's sovereign election cannot be questioned; the Jewish people have stumbled in disbelief; God has retained a remnant of faithful Jews; God uses the disobedience of all people to bring all to faith; God's ways are beyond human understanding. In the process, Paul raises a number of troubling problems for modern readers: Predestination versus free will; the fairness of God; the role of the Law in salvation; and Paul's handling of scripture. This brief article sketches out the stages of Paul's argument and the problems it raises, and offers brief summaries of some possible solutions to those problems.

Abstract:
The exact identification of Judas Iscariot has long vexed scholars. The gospel accounts themselves say little, offering a variety of possible motivations for his action, including money and Satanic impulse. The key word used of Judas' actions, paradidonai, found in all four canonical Gospels, offers two translations, “hand over” and “betray,” which remain highly contested. However, the fact that both God and people may “hand over” offers a possible solution, which emerges from an examination of the genre and environment of the four Gospels.

Abstract:
The fall of the first man (Adam) into sin caused the man to lose the glory of God, man died and was separated from God. The gospel is glad tidings of Jesus Christ who died, rose again to save everyone who believes. To believe the gospel means to believe in the redemptive work of Christ, to reject the gospel is to reject salvation. In the Gospel God's truth is revealed to everyone who believes in Him. This truth is related to the absolute truth of God that no one has. The truth of God revealed in the Gospels is related to the truth that God has done through the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus to save sinners. Salvation can only be received through faith. Faith is a gift from God given to humans so that they believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The gospel gives hope and sets people free from death. To get salvation everyone must listen to the gospel. The task of evangelism is the responsibility of the Church (believers) to preach the message of salvation in the power of the Holy Spirit to sinners so that they repent and have faith in Jesus and become disciples who obey the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus.

Abstract:
The God of biblical revelation is present everywhere in the Gospel according to Matthew, but often in a self-effacing way, receding behind Jesus, Emmanuel, God-with-us. God's presence is veiled by divine passives, hidden behind the reverent circumlocution “heavens.” The parable of the Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of God is widely stated in our Gospel of Matthew. Many scholars claim that the Gospel of Matthew reveals more about Jesus as a powerful King.

Abstract:
A missionary cannot simply enter a new culture with Bible in hand and expect that people will automatically understand the gospel message. God's word can be misunderstood if it is not communicated according to the worldview of those receiving it. Since many of the world's cultures are oral and not literate, this requires the learning of oral skills in order to preach the gospel. The Bible is a literary work, but we may have to unlearn our literary habits in order to refashion our proclamation of the gospel with oral concepts and methods.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis, Towards ajifth gospel via Schillebeeclx and Solle, is a search for God and God's gospel. It is a quest in which I combine Edward Schillebeeckx's belief that Christian life is a fifth gospel and Dorothee Solle's praxis-orientated theology into a contrapuntal theological conversation. I argue that through each theologian's vision of Christian life a theological and hermeneutical framework is established within which men and women of faith can interpret change and prepare the world and church for God's transforming newness. The scope of this thesis identifies a life-giving Christianity by investigating common theological themes in the work of Schillebeeckx and Solle. On the basis of the insights of both theologians I argue that all believers are called to critically reinterpret belief in the God of Jesus, that human experience is the horizon for reflection and interpretation. That mystics and prophets communicate God's saving love within an ethic of responsibility for this world, and that when Christian communities engage in

Womer, Rod. "God’s Forgiveness as Expressed in the Gospels." Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2020. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/951.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the twenty-two passages in the Gospels in which God’s forgiveness of human sin is explicitly addressed. Using modern textual, literary, form, redaction, and historical criticisms as exegetical tools, the examination maps out the development of these biblical vignettes so as to extract from the process an understanding of what the Gospel writers wanted to convey to Jesus’ followers about God’s forgiveness. Four distinct forgiveness modes were discovered: repentance leads to forgiveness (e.g. proclaim repentance and forgiveness to all nations in Lk 24:47), faith acts as a conduit to forgiveness (e.g. sinful woman kissing Jesus’ feet in Lk 7:48b-50), one must forgive in order to be forgiven (e.g. the Lord’s Prayer in Lk 11:4 and Mt 6:12), and forgiveness is a free gift based solely on God’s mercy (e.g. on the cross, “Father, forgive them” in Lk 23:34). None of these views represents a majority Gospel vision of forgiveness, with each of the four viewpoints having four to seven episodes occurring in the Gospel cannon. Seldom are any of these pathways to forgiveness mentioned together. Despite a plethora of information about forgiveness, nowhere do the Gospels present a wholistic explanation of divine forgiveness. The Gospel writers, like their Hebraic ancestors, were comfortable with a multivariant view of God’s forgiveness and showed no propensity to develop a wholistic theology of forgiveness. However, underlying this untidy approach was an emphasis on God’s mercy and compassion that had roots in the Old Testament understanding of Yahweh as gracious and merciful and abounding in steadfast love. In addition, the seedling concepts of sin as an unpayable debt or of the importance of faith in Jesus appeared in the background of multiple Scripture passages from each of the four forgiveness themes.

Divine healing is one of the three major components of the triple Pentecostal belief and practice, along with glossolalia and exorcism. In Brazil, for what we know, the first wave or classical Pentecostalism did not give much emphasis on divine healing, so it was from the second wave or deuteropentecostalism, with the insertion of the Church of the Foursquare Gospel in the Brazilian religious field in the 1950s, this charisma gained public notoriety and cultic centrality. With the emergence of neopentecostalism or as autonomous pentecostalism in the 1970s, divine healing, already inserted into the theology of prosperity, achieved another level, especially with the founding of the World Church of the Power of God, whose specialty is the thaumaturgy. Thus, this study intends to investigate the phenomenon of divine healing circumscribed to the Church of the Foursquare Gospel and the World Church of the Power of God. The research is developed from the literature review, participant observation and semi-structured interviews with the faithful of both churches. Taking the data obtained with such methodological procedures as a basis, we try to analyze and discuss the mythic and ritual dimension of divine healing in these religious niches. Finally, from a comparative perspective, this dissertation examines some aspects, especially the mythic and ritual aspects, that involve divine healing in a diachronic perspective that culminates in the present time, shedding light on this religious phenomenon that is the research object of this work.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how Norman Vincent Peale’s gospel of positive thinking catapulted him to fame, mainly through his 1952 book, “The Power of Positive Thinking,” and contributed to the revival of American religion at the time. It first considers how the overwhelming reception accorded “The Power of Positive Thinking” made Peale a “minister to millions” and how his popularity coincided with the religious revitalization effort before discussing Peale’s interpretation of New Thought. It then looks at the criticisms hurled against “The Power of Positive Thinking,” including the accusation that Pealeism represented the worst aspects of the revival of populist religion, and the role played by Peale in the religious revival of the 1950s. Finally, it describes how the Foundation for Christian Living emerged as the nerve center of Peale’s independent ministry during the decade of the 1950s.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how Norman Vincent Peale disseminated his gospel using the “Guideposts” magazine, which used the motto, “More than a magazine.” Founded in 1944 by Peale, “Guideposts” gave Pealeism a public identity that was easily understood. Politically, early “Guideposts” found a home for the potentially antinomian message of positive thinking within Cold War conservatism. Its editorial philosophy reflected Peale’s civic and religious priorities, best summarized as the ideas of Americanism, free enterprise, and practical Christianity. The chapter shows how “Guideposts” emerged from Peale’s practical Christianity and political conservatism and how it fared in the 1940s. It also discusses the strategies adopted by Peale to build a new image for “Guideposts” and concludes by explaining how the magazine evolved from a political broadside of the Cold War to achieve a more enduring cultural status along the lines of “The Reader’s Digest” and “National Geographic.”

Abstract:
This chapter documents evangelical Protestant efforts to “spiritually rearm” Germany and Europe in an era of Cold War militarization. These spiritual efforts complemented a vast increase in American military capabilities during the early 1950s, as well as West Germany’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The evangelical pursuit of Europe’s “spiritual rearmament” signaled the rising prominence of Protestant evangelicals in American politics and diplomacy. Vying for spiritual leadership of their nation, Protestant evangelicals prepared to spread across the globe a gospel of faith, freedom, and free enterprise. In response to Cold War rearmament campaigns, a growing number of American ecumenists began to adopt Europe’s “third way” theology.
