Dunne, Tim, Milja Kurki, and Steve Smith, eds. International Relations Theories. 5th ed. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/hepl/9780198814443.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The fifth edition of this text provides coverage of international relations theories and arguments. The chapters explore the full spectrum of theoretical perspectives and debates, ranging from the historically dominant traditions of realism, liberalism, and Marxism to poststructuralism, green theory, and Global IR. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular theory and features a case study that bridges theory and practice, and shows how theory can be used to explain real-world political dilemmas. Spotlights on key books and articles encourage readers to go beyond the textbook and explore important works in the field, and new case study questions encourage analytical thinking and help readers understand the value of applying theory to concrete political problems.

Buchanan, Allen. A Richer Jus ad Bellum. Edited by Seth Lazar and Helen Frowe. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199943418.013.11.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary jus ad bellum theories are too restricted in the range of issues they explore. They typically fail to ascertain the best directly action-guiding norms leaders should follow in deciding to go to war (these may differ from elements of objective justifications), morally evaluate institutional procedures by which leaders make the decision to go to war, determine the proper division of labour between institutional procedures and directly action-guiding norms for recourse to war decisions, morally evaluate the recourse to war decisions leaders make, provide an account of the virtues of leaders relevant to their decisions to go to war, evaluate leaders’ public acts of justification for going to war, evaluate social practices regarding what counts as a legitimate type of justification for going to war, and evaluate domestic and international law regarding recourse to war. Merely determining what makes recourse to war acts right does not answer these questions.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter addresses the question of how unresolved racial grief works through the demands of capital, racialization, and sacred ritual practice to enact a gender hierarchy. It thinks through James Baldwin's first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953), to explore how testifying serves as a technology of black patriarchy—a ritual that arises out of the need for racial and economic redemption yet unfolds within and propagates gendered power relations. It examines how the content and structure of Baldwin's Bildungsroman, set in Harlem's Pentecostal community during the Great Depression, allegorizes the conversion of John Grimes, who embodies the “weak, feminine flesh” of his matrilineal line that is sacrificed to secure his “manchild” status of salvation. The chapter is punctuated by a section that situates Baldwin's novel as a form of sexual testifying on the part of Baldwin himself. In doing so, it places Baldwin's novel in conversation with its dramatic sequel, The Amen Corner (1954), to explore how both texts anticipate and extend queer theoretical conversations about the social construction of black, gay subject-formations.

Engelmann, Lukas, Caroline Humphrey, and Christos Lynteris, eds. Working With Diagrams. Berghahn Books, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3167/9781800735583.

Full text
Abstract:
Arising from the need to go beyond the semiotic, cognitive, epistemic and symbolic reading of diagrams, this book looks at what diagrams are capable of in scholarly work related to the social sciences. Rather than attempting to define what diagrams are, and what their dietic capacity might be, contributions to this volume draw together the work diagrams do in the development of theories. Across a range of disciplines, the chapters introduce the ephemeral dimensions of scientist’s interactions and collaboration with diagrams, consider how diagrams configure cooperation across disciplines, and explore how diagrams have been made to work in ways that point beyond simplification, clarification and formalization.

Adshead, Gwen. Ethical Issues Common to All Therapies. Edited by John Z. Sadler, K. W. M. Fulford, and Werdie (C W. ). van Staden. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198732372.013.32.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, I review the ethical issues that are common to all therapies. I suggest that ethical reasoning is an intrinsic part of all the psychological therapies; specifically, reasoning that involves consideration of values and changes in value perspectives. I discuss traditional ethical concerns in psychological therapy, and go on to explore more contemporary concerns, including the construction of autonomy, privacy, and change as a political stance. I conclude that all the psychological therapies seek to help people “change their minds” to some degree and thereby to change their evaluations of themselves, their situations, and others. Judgments about enhancement of preferences and the value of change are therefore at the heart of all therapies.

von Fintel, Kai, and Sabine Iatridou. A modest proposal for the meaning of imperatives. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780198718208.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
We discuss two challenges for any semantics for imperatives that has them denote (strong) modal propositions: the use of imperatives to signal acquiescence (A: ‘I’d like to open the window.’ B: ‘Go ahead, open it!’) and their use in conditional conjunctions (‘Ignore the slightest detail and the experiment is flawed’). We examine how the meaning of imperatives arises compositionally, and the division of labor between semantics and pragmatics. We demonstrate remarkable cross-linguistic uniformity in these uses of the imperative. In the course of the investigation, we also explore several puzzles in the analysis of conditional conjunction. We conclude with a recommendation in favor of analyses that give imperatives a non-modal semantics paired with a modulated pragmatics.

Franklin, Sara B., ed. Edna Lewis. University of North Carolina Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5149/northcarolina/9781469638553.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Edna Lewis (1916-2006) wrote some of America's most resonant, lyrical, and significant cookbooks, including the now classic The Taste of Country Cooking. Lewis cooked and wrote as a means to explore her memories of childhood on a farm in Freetown, Virginia, a community first founded by black families freed from slavery. With such observations as "we would gather wild honey from the hollow of oak trees to go with the hot biscuits and pick wild strawberries to go with the heavy cream," she commemorated the seasonal richness of southern food. After living many years in New York City, where she became a chef and a political activist, she returned to the South and continued to write. Her reputation as a trailblazer in the revival of regional cooking and as a progenitor of the farm-to-table movement continues to grow. In this first-ever critical appreciation of Lewis's work, food-world stars gather to reveal their own encounters with Edna Lewis. Together they penetrate the mythology around Lewis and illuminate her legacy for a new generation, making a case for Lewis as a critical voice in African American foodways, and a pioneering professional woman chef, and the single most important figure in regional American food.

Burke, Michael, and Esmeralda V. Bon. The Locations and Means of Literary Reading. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190457747.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
The means and locations of reading are becoming increasingly significant. This is not only reflected in the academic world but also in the press. This chapter addresses the question of whether the locations and means of reading have changed in the past ten years since the advent of the e-reader. Have the places and manner of reading become more flexible? Has reading “on the go” replaced traditional locations of literary reading? Is more literature being read on mobile devices or is reading on paper still preferred over digital means—or are current readers hybrid readers? These are the questions that underpin this chapter. A connected series of experiments was conducted that seeks to explore the question of locations and means of contemporary acts of reading. It is hoped that the results that emerge may point the way to more qualitative and quantitative studies on this increasingly significant topic.

Orgad, Shani, and Rosalind Gill. Confidence Culture. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478021834.

Full text
Abstract:
In Confidence Culture, Shani Orgad and Rosalind Gill argue that imperatives directed at women to “love your body” and “believe in yourself” imply that psychological blocks rather than entrenched social injustices hold women back. Interrogating the prominence of confidence in contemporary discourse about body image, workplace, relationships, motherhood, and international development, Orgad and Gill draw on Foucault’s notion of technologies of self to demonstrate how “confidence culture” demands of women near-constant introspection and vigilance in the service of self-improvement. They argue that while confidence messaging may feel good, it does not address structural and systemic oppression. Rather, confidence culture suggests that women—along with people of color, the disabled, and other marginalized groups—are responsible for their own conditions. Rejecting confidence culture’s remaking of feminism along individualistic and neoliberal lines, Orgad and Gill explore alternative articulations of feminism that go beyond the confidence imperative.
