Abstract:
New sugar-containing aryl ethynyl ligand [N-(4-trimethylsilylethynylphenyl)-?-D-glucopyranosylamine] 2 has been prepared by the reaction of [N-(4-iodophenyl)-?-D-glucopyranosylamine] 1 with trimethysilylacetylene in the presence of Pd(OAc)2/CuI catalyst, in iPr2NH and DMF solvent mixture. The trimethylsilyl group of compound 2 was deprotected using K2CO3 in methanol to form terminal ethynylene ligand [N-(?-D-glucopyranosyl)aniline-4-ethyne] 3. Novel platinum mono-ethynyl complex trans-[(P(Bu)3)2PtCl(C?C-4-C6H4-NH-D-glocose)] 4 and bis-ethynyl complex trans-[(P(Bu)3)2PtCl(C?C-4-C6H4-NH-D-glocose)2] 5 were formed by the dehydrohalogenation reaction of trans-[Pt(P(Bu)3)2Cl2] with terminal ethynyl ligand 3 in iPr2NH/THF, in the presence of CuI, at 65ºC. The complexes are hygroscopic in air, and are fairly soluble in methanol and CH2Cl2. The new compound 2 - 5 were characterized by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The compounds were tested for antibacterial activity using disk diffusion technique. Abstract:

Abstract:
Algorithms that minimize putative synapomorphy in an alignment cannot be directly implemented since trivial cases with concatenated sequences would be selected because they would imply a minimum number of events to be explained (e.g., a single insertion/deletion would be required to explain divergence among two sequences). Therefore, indirect measures to approach parsimony need to be implemented. In this paper, we thoroughly present a Global Criterion for Sequence Alignment (GLOCSA) that uses a scoring function to globally rate multiple alignments aiming to produce matrices that minimize the number of putative synapomorphies. We also present a Genetic Algorithm that uses GLOCSA as the objective function to produce sequence alignments refining alignments previously generated by additional existing alignment tools (we recommend MUSCLE). We show that in the example cases our GLOCSA-guided Genetic Algorithm (GGGA) does improve the GLOCSA values, resulting in alignments that imply less putative synapomorphies.

Abstract:
Introduction. There is ample evidence that using carbohydrates during physical exercise contributes to increasing the duration of the physical load being experIenced. Still research devoted to the study of using carbohydrate solutions of different concentrations and in different quantities is of great interest. No definite results as to the time of assimilation of carbohydrates in respect to the starting point of the physical load undertaken are available either. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy during intensive exercise. The body of the athlete requires a greater amount of carbohydrates since they present in themselves the most efficient source of energy that prolongs muscle function by providing possibilities for the energy to be generated both aerobically and anaerobically. The topicality of the present study lies in the fact that it is aimed at establishing the effect of different solutions on the working capacity of athletes. The hypotesis of the research is: the assimilation of extra glucose 20 min after the start of running helps to prolong the duration of running. The aim of the research done was to establish the effect of using glucose during running on the duration of running possible. Subjects and methods. Barboni, Federico.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis work is included within the ANR CGS µLab projet, which aims to understand thefundamental mechanisms involved in the deep storage processes of CO2 from on-chip geological laboratories(GLoCs - geological labs on chip) to reproduce the pressure and temperature conditionsof deep geological environments. Besides experimental understanding, the contribution of numericalmodeling approaches appears essential in order to define models allowing to predict in particularthe maximum storage capacities based on the characteristics of the reservoirs (porosity, permeability, temperature, pressure, geochemistry), and the injection process (flow rate, composition). In thiscontext, this work has two main goals : (i) to associate experimental imaging and numerical modelingto simulate non-reactive flows in model porous media on chip ; and (ii) to follow experimentally thestructural evolution of a 3D porous medium undergoing a reactive flow. In order to address to thesegoals, the approach we have proposed is divided into two parts. In the first part, we carried out the3D modeling of the permeabilities of GLoCs by taking volume averaging. To do this, we first verifiedthe behavior of a GLoC according to its number of plots rows by studying a diffusion problem ona nested mesh that we have implemented from a GLoC binary image to reduce computation time. Then, we updated our permeability code, which solves the closure problem of flow, by analyticallycalculating in 3D the stability criterion that takes into account the anisotropy of GLoC geometry. Wethen processed the 2D digital images of the GLoCs before proceeding with the generation of their3D representative elementary volumes. Finally, we have simulated the permeabilities of GLoCs beforecomparing them with the experimental results and those obtained with the PHOENICS software. In asecond part, we have developed an experimental set-up to recreate 3D reactive porous media within amicrofluidic channel (fixed packed bed of calcium carbonate - CaCO3 microparticles). Using the X-raylaminography of the ESRF line ID19, we have observed on reconstructed 2D images the dissolutionphenomena occurring during the successive injection of constant volumes of non-equilibrium solution. This proof of concept has opened new possibilities for using this methodology to acquire kinetic dataon reactive front phenomena in porous media

Full text
Abstract:
Many questions remain about the role of microbial activity in the mobility of trace elements in soils. These questions concern both the location of this activity within the porosity and the way it is affected by the saturation or unsaturation conditions of the porosity, or the way in which it affects differently trace elements. Direct and non-destructive methods for macro-microscopic observation are still not widely applied, as is the monitoring of the activity of microbial communities at different scales in the soil. Non-invasive techniques such as X-ray micro-tomography are increasingly used for soil characterization, but biofilm viewing requires more complex image processing. Understanding the development of biofilms and their in situ activity remains limited, but new experimental and observation capacities are emerging thanks to the development of micro fluidic devices such as "lab on chip" or geological lab on chips « GLoCs ». The objective of the present PhD is to better understand the conditions of establishment of microbial "hotspot" habitats in heterogeneous porous media, saturated or not, and their effects on their micro-environment as well as on the mobility of trace elements in contaminated soils. Two experimental devices were used on the basis of a configuration of complementary scales: small centimetric-sized columns and "lab-on-a-chip" sub-centimeter dimensions, the two devices having a simplified bimodal porous structure, properties mimicking the structure of a heterogeneous natural soil. Water transfer experiments in biotic and abiotic conditions were carried out to observe the impact of biofilms on the bio-geochemistry of small-scale environments under saturated and unsaturated water conditions, similar to the conditions of a real soil. The set of geochemical parameters monitored on the experimental system defines four geochemical environments, consistent with natural water percolation conditions. The monitoring of the redox potential, not often monitored on this type of experimental system, has made it possible to highlight the importance of biological activity on their geochemical microenvironments. Unlike natural soils containing more organic matter than technosols of industrial sites, the evolution of the redox potential is governed by the biological activity with respect to Fe and Mn and not by the oxidation of the organic matter and the availability in oxygen. The hydric parameter governs the installation of biofilms and seems to lead indirectly to a differentiation or selection of the populations present in the microbial consortium. The biological activity was higher under saturated conditions, and the processes appear to be more active in transition zones in terms of pore size, as observed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray micro-tomography, via observations on lab-on-chip and via carbon concentrations in different particle size fractions. Under the two distinct hydric conditions, biofilms control the geochemical system and the redox potential leading to the immobilization of Cu, Pb and As, but also to the release of Cr in its most toxic form. The simplification of the system by percolation on sands made it possible to reproduce conditions close to technosols of industrial sites, which are generally poor in organic matter

Mutembe, Tessy Karimba. "Identification of predictors of glucose control in a cohort of adult patients with diabetes mellitus at Kalafong Hospital." Diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26125.

Abstract:
Background and objectives of the study: Although it is known that good glycaemic control improves microvascular outcomes in diabetic patients, no local study has yet been undertaken to investigate the potential factors that influence poor or good blood glucose control. This research focused on the evaluation of blood glucose control as assessed by glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in diabetic patients. In addition, certain determinants which contributed toward poor control at Kalafong Hospital were studied in a cohort of adults with diabetes mellitus for the year 2008. The aim of studying these determinants was to identify patients with a high risk of disease morbidity and barriers that prevent these patients from meeting their goals of improved health outcomes. The specific objectives were to estimate HbA1c control of patients seen at the diabetic clinic at Kalafong Hospital Pretoria in 2008 and to assess any existing association between patient demographic characteristics and diabetes characteristics with HbA1c. Methods: The study was a retrospective cohort study. All diabetic patients aged 18 years and above, who had been registered in the 2008 dataset and who had come for at least one visit to the diabetic clinic and had at least one HbA1C measurement, were included in the study. Patients who did not meet the above criteria were excluded from the study. A total of 942 patients seen in 2008 were selected, 801 patients met these inclusion criteria. The outcome variable HbA1c was obtained by computing the mean of the two HbA1c values collected for each participant for the year 2008, and used as a continuous dependent variable in multivariate linear regression. For descriptive purposes, HbA1c values were categorised into good control (<7%), poor control (> or = 7&< or =10%) and very poor control (>10%). Data analysis was performed using Stata version 10. Statistical significance was established at a threshold of 95% (p < 0.05). Results: More than half of participants in the study were females (60.8%/39.2%). The mean age of participants in the study was 56 years (sd 14.1). With regard to race, the proportion of blacks was more than three quarters of the sample (93.1%/2.4%/2.4%). Our results showed that HbA1c level decreased with increasing age, (p = 0.016). These results also showed that for every 1 mmol/l increase in total cholesterol, there was a 0.178% increase in HbA1c, (p = 0.019; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.030 - 0.327), suggesting that higher cholesterol was associated with poorer HbA1c control. In addition, for every 1 mmol/l increase in capillary glucose, the HbA1c increased by 0.276%, (p = 0.000; CI: 0.230 - 0.322) while for every one unit increase in BMI, the HbA1c reduced by 0.032%, (p = 0.017; CI: -0.057 to -0.006). Conclusion: These results suggest that patients with higher total cholesterol and patients with higher capillary glucose level are more likely to exhibit poorer HbA1c control, whereas, older patients and patients with a higher BMI are more likely to have better HbA1c control.

Abstract:
The thesis studies the relation between the Orthodox Christian identity and cultural diversity in a diaspora context. The problem being examined herein is the invisibility of the Orthodox communities in the public sphere of the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the ecclesial and cultural isolation of Orthodox parishes based on an ethnic principle and the lack of interaction between society and Orthodox communities. The research aims to explore this behaviour and suggests theological guidelines to analyze it. Using the empirico-hermeneutic method, reality of immigrant people is attentively studied and their voices are “translated”, the thesis being voice over for them. The empirical study stems from the observation, the administration of three questionnaires, and 13 interviews with 68 people from Bulgaria, Moldavia and Romania, newcomers and settled-ins through, as well priests and church councils through, making this research a thorough process. The hermeneutic aspect of the research consists of concepts which are de-constructed and then re-constructed around immigrant people in order to zoom in on those concepts according to people’s life experience. The study reveals complex and simultaneous dynamics of isolation and openness. In fact, four types of behaviour have been identified upon contact with cultural diversity. This ambivalent relation to cultural diversity emerges not only from historical attitudes from East-European peoples in order to protect their cultural identity but also following the cultural shock they experienced on their arrival, as well as their financial difficulties, the language barriers and their struggles to professional realisation. Ethnic congregations hence become safe, linguistic, and identity gatherings where people can worship and feel at home. The analysis is conducted through a love paradigm of the Trinitarian theology and of interculturality. Those theoretical, social and theological aspects are then compared and show a distortion with the reality of how invisible, isolated and ecclesially fragmented the East-European communities are in the Montreal diaspora context. Some practical solutions are presented at the conclusion of this research.
