Abstract:
This chapter first discusses the nature of challenges that natural resources pose to India’s growth and then focuses on four related issues: its resource trade and investment patterns; the global responses its searches for resources and engagements have evoked; the sustainability and equity challenges around resource development for India’s growth; and finally the foreign, trade, and security policy implications of a growing global resource dependence. It posits three scenarios of how India may perceive itself and orient its resources policy in response to the unfolding global and domestic developments. The chapter suggests an urgent need for the Indian state to engage more sharply, effectively, and with greater commitment on the natural resources question. It also suggests the need for international action to attend to allocation, regulation, and sustainability in the global resource economy.

Abstract:
Population growth alone dictates that global food supplies must increase by over 50% in coming decades. Advances in technology offer an array of opportunities to meet this demand, but history shows that these can be fully realised only within an enabling policy environment. Sustaining Global Food Security makes a compelling case that recent technological breakthroughs can move the planet towards a secure and sustainable food supply only if new policies are designed that allow their full expression. Bob Zeigler has brought together a distinguished set of scientists and policy analysts to produce well-referenced chapters exploring international policies on genetic resources, molecular genetics, genetic engineering, crop breeding and protection, remote sensing, the changing landscape of agricultural policies in the world’s largest countries, and trade. Those entering the agricultural sciences and those who aspire to influence public policy during their careers will benefit from the insights of this unique set of experiences and perspectives.

Abstract:
Oil is both the lifeblood and poison of the global economy. Historically the control of resources confers power to governments and people. Geographic control of choke points on trade routes impacted the flow of commerce. Oil and gas are no different, providing power and influence to those that control it. Oil and gas are not just a resource that provides energy for the world. It is also the most important feedstock for manufactured components that are in demand the world over. Everything from cosmetics to containers, machine parts, fashion, and furniture are all by-products of petroleum. The pervasive nature and the uses of oil and gas comes from the desire for a certain standard of living. It has the potential to influence change in those regions that lack it, and it influences our ability to maintain security or defend against aggression.

Abstract:
The process of globalization and its impact on societies and peoples everywhere are topics of great importance today. Recent experiences have been characterized by growing frustration with globalization, reflecting unsatisfactory processes and outcomes in many areas. In the economic area, high financial volatility and a broad sustained deficit have resulted in a frequency of national and international financial crises, and in a global financial crisis unprecedented since the Great Depression. In the social area, disappointment is the result of the uneven way the benefits of globalization have spread in both developed and developing economies. In the environmental area, no effective action has been taken so far to face the unprecedented challenges affected by climate change and the massive destruction of biodiversity. Our world is suffered by environmental problems that consume natural resources and strain livelihoods, many of which are arisen from by poor industrial practices. Environmental problems negatively impact economic and social life, directly and indirectly, environment-related diseases lead to loss of time and efficiency. All these deterioration encompasses a large set of areas, from the economy to social development, to inclusive growth, to macroeconomic and financial stability, to environmental sustainability. In this perspective, the European Congress of Economic Issues (ECOEI) held in Kocaeli in November 2017, which was the second in a series that started in March 2017. The aim of this congress was to assess the disruptive results of globalization in economic and social area and to explore the policy strategies that could help it become a reality. Therefore, this congress was reflected in having special sessions devoted to economic and social issues, including a wide array topics in global trade, economic growth, energy, environment and human development.

Abstract:
Brexit is likely to lead to the largest shift in Britain’s economic orientation in living memory. Some have argued that leaving the EU will enable Britain to revive markets in Commonwealth countries with which it has long-standing historical ties. Their opponents argue that such claims are based on forms of imperial nostalgia which ignore the often uncomfortable historical trade relations between Britain and these countries, as well as the UK’s historical role as a global, rather than chiefly imperial, economy. This book explores how efforts to promote a ‘British World’ system, centred on promoting trade between Britain and the Dominions, grew and declined in influence between the 1880s and 1970s. At the beginning of the twentieth century many people from London, to Sydney, Auckland, and Toronto considered themselves to belong to culturally British nations. British politicians and business leaders invested significant resources in promoting trade with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa out of a perception that these were great markets of the future. However, ideas about promoting trade between ‘British’ peoples were racially exclusive. From the 1920s onwards colonized and decolonizing populations questioned and challenged the bases of British World networks, making use of alternative forms of international collaboration promoted firstly by the League of Nations and then by the United Nations. Schemes for imperial collaboration amongst ethnically ‘British’ peoples were hollowed out by the actions of a variety of political and business leaders across Asia and Africa who reshaped the functions and identity of the Commonwealth.

Stevens, Paul. The Role of Oil and Gas in the Economic Development of the Global Economy. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198817369.003.0004.

Abstract:
This chapter is concerned with the role of oil and gas in the economic development of the global economy. It focuses on the context in which established and newer oil and gas producers in developing countries must frame their policies to optimize the benefits of such resources. It outlines a history of the issue over the last twenty-five years. It considers oil and gas as factor inputs, their role in global trade, the role of oil prices in the macroeconomy and the impact of the geopolitics of oil and gas. It then considers various conventional views of the future of oil and gas in the primary energy mix. Finally, it challenges the drivers behind these conventional views of the future with an emphasis on why they may prove to be different from what is expected and how this may change the context in which producers must frame their policy responses.
