Full textHosting MVNOs, supporting them from both operational and commercial perspectives are new challenges for the mobile operators: they have to set up a specific internal organization because they used to be a vertically integrated industrial structure. All of this represents tremendous changes for them.
This thesis describes first the strategic models for hosting MVNOs. The regulatory aspects, that are an essential driver for the liberalization of network economies, are then analyzed. The key point is: are the MVNO able to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of mobile markets.
Another important aspect is the modelling of a mobile network: the MVNOs will use some components while other components are unuseful for them. Without such model, it is impossible to derive the right costs and price to be charged to the MVNO in order to have a win win industrial model for both the MVNO and its hosting operator.
A case study of a corporate MVNO focusing on needs of multinationals is analyzed. Such case study describes all the steps for an economic actor to become MVNO from scratch. Such MVNO are not yet present although there is a market demand.
The last chapter makes a comparative study of the MVNO markets in the European Union.

Full textMarket information and established communication between seller and buyer play an important role in business activities. This thesis investigates the Transkei area in the Eastern Cape
Province, South Africa to find out how to empower rural farmers by providing them with less-expensive mobile technology enabling them to post and advertise their produce, access market
information on a common database, and find and communicate with potential customers. The farmers&rsquo
requirements were identified using quantitative and qualitative methods and a prototype
consisting of USSD and web applications was developed. It allows the farmer to follow a sequence of menu commands to send a request to the database and access market information, such
as commodity prices, and post information about their own produce so as to attract more customers. The low cost of USSD and the ubiquity of mobile phones enable the system to be usable, affordable and effective. During the final stage of development, the system was tested successfully and addressed a major problem faced by farmers, i.e. lack of access to market information.

Full textThis work intends to study and implement the integration between the circuit switching domain and the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) to support vertical handovers that are between different access networks, such as Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and WiFi. Therefore the specifications are incomplete about this topic in standards from the entities who works with this subject. Then, is presented a new proposal for this integration: a new functional entity to realize this integration: the Call Data Storage Function (CDSF), which interacts with other modules of VCC Service and guarantees that some information shared between modules are not lost, due to conversion of signalling protocols in the interface between domains. Besides that, CDSF helps in the control of allocation of reference address that are used to route calls from one domain to another. Access protocols to CDSF are defined and CDSF methods are exposed. The CDSF design uses a modular approach, which allows future improvements, just changing modules. As case studies to validate this work proposal, call scenarios are presented that uses the VCC Service, using CDSF. Finally, it is concluded that the integration between domains is viable if this work proposal is used. It is presented, as well, that the separation between control plans and data plans is one of the main contributions of NGN architecture to the success of its implementations, like IMS. Furthermore, it is exposed the advantages that VCC Service can aggregate to IMS, contributing for more rapidly adoption by telecommunications operators, considering that this service helps the networks integration, adding convergence, mobility and continuity.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigate the di erent available GSM bearer channels that can be used to launch a cellphone banking application. Speci c attention is given to launch such a cellphone banking application to the so called \bottom of the pyramid". In South Africa, there are an estimate 11 to 13 million people with no bank accounts. The cellphone create an ideal opportunity to be used as a tool to reach this untapped market segment that today mainly uses cash to pay for day to day living expenses. The thesis provide more information on the cellphone banking arena in South Africa as well as certain projects in other parts of the world. The thesis also highlight new devel- opments on cellphone technology that include Android and IPhone delivery channels. Focus is placed on how the cellphone banking presentation layer must be delivered through the USSD GSM bearer channel. USSD is at the current moment the ultimate channel to consider due to its extensive reach and ability to work on any GSM cellphone handset. In conclusion, although cellphone banking can be used by any person, the bene t to bring nancial services to the bottom end of the pyramid must be considered to achieve nancial inclusion. The cellphone due to its reach is the ideal medium to access this lower end market.

Full textThe conversion from homogeneous global system for mobile communications (GSM) networks to heterogeneous GSM/universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) networks is rapidly expanding. Previous research identified vulnerabilities in the GSM network that were fixed in the UMTS standard; however, the mobile device must successfully access the UMTS network to take advantage of security improvements. Therefore, a possible vulnerability not addressed in either the GSM or UMTS standards is the potential for a malicious entity to prevent a mobile device from handing over from a GSM to UMTS network, because the GSM network maintains the stand-alone dedicated control channel (SDCCH) uplink time slots. The process of testing this vulnerability requires the development of a device that monitors a GSM base transceiver station, identifies when a handover to UMTS message is sent, tracks the time slots of the SDCCH uplink, and transmits a GSM handover-failure message. In this thesis, we present an open-source coding scheme that utilizes parts of the OpenBTS source code to transmit a GSM handover-failure message using the universal software radio peripheral. The method is validated through the collection of the GSM transmitter messages by Airprobes GSM-receiver software.

Full textCell Broadcast (CB) is a possible technical realisation of a global emergency alert system. It is a technique used for sending short text messages to all mobile stations (MSs) in a defined geographical area. An potential effect of using CB is the increase in battery consumption of the MS due to the fact that an extra channel has to be used to make the service available even when the network is otherwise congested. Another part of the service which leads to a potential problem is making CB messages available in different languages. Investigating these problems is the objective of this thesis and the studies it includes. During the first part of the thesis, we measured the battery consumption of MSs in different modes of operation in order to analyse how CB affects the amount of current drained. The tests showed that battery consumption increased only slightly when CB messages were being received at the MS. Although some of the results can be, and are, discussed, we believe that CB would have a small effect on the power consumption of an MS, particularly in a context where it would be used for emergency warning messages only. This mentioned, it would however be wishful to confirm the conclusions further through the realisation of long-term testing. The second part of the thesis deals with the investigation of the MSs’ support for CB messages with different coding schemes. Based on the investigation’s result, we have come to the conclusion that in the long term the usage of different coding schemes on the same channel is preferred. However, the usage of one, global, emergency channel is hard to realise since that requires a standardisation between all countries. In our opinion this may be achieved first in the long run and until then, the usage of separate channels seems to be necessary.

Full textIOT devices have the potential to improve asset lifecycle optimization because of their ability to provide relevant real time data to high level applications. This data with minimal latency can assist asset managers to control the behaviour of assets and asset users to optimize asset lifecycle cost. There are many environments that require asset tracking devices but this design focussed on motor vehicles with auxiliary functions and apparatus. This research work documented the design of an asset tracking device built and tested on a 32.bit microcontroller platform with built-in CAN peripheral. This design resolved handling multiple serial interfaces collating data simultaneously concatenating this data and transmitting the data via GPRS interface as a single UDP sentence. Apart from interfacing various serial interfaces to the Stm24f4 this design also implemented a Wireless module as well as a multichannel ADC Module. This design was accomplished by researching and implementing software techniques as well as researching the hardware/firmware in terms of DMA and Nested Vector Interrupt Controller of the STM32 devices. The solution that this design will accomplish is to provide the industry an asset-tracking device with data capturing functionality capable of delivering the above needs at reasonable data cost. The device designed in this thesis is the client device of asset tracking network. This design was accomplished on a proof of concept basis delivering built hardware in the form of various application modules interfaced to a 32 –bit microcontroller via uart, SPI and CAN.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: SRMA currently used on the SUNSAT field station is an effective MAC layer protocol but lacks several features. Sufficient support for flexible communication, acknowledgement of individual data packets, simultaneous communication of multiple instances from a higher layer over a single underlying layer, and a robust FTP procedure to transfer large amounts of data are some of the features that the SUNSA T field station should cater for. ORBCOMM, GSM and WAP implementations are discussed. Some features from these implementations that are useful in the LEO communication environment are designed into an additional layer of software. This additional layer, called middleware, is proposed and uses SRMA services to deliver store-and-forward services. It supports high volumes of short transactions and session suspend and resume facilities between the SUNSA T satellite and field station. Keywords: SUNSAT, Communication, Field station, WAP, GSM, ORBCOMM
Sleutelwoord: SUNS AT, Kommunikasie, grondterminaal, WAP, GSM, ORBCOMM

In the project, a blind equalization by Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) is developed and investigated for the Global System Mobile Communication(GSM). The blind equalization techniques have the ability to retrieve the input data, and possibly the channel impulse response, given only the channel output without resorting to any training sequence. Many of the proposed blind techniques usually incorporate higher order statistical information of the received signal in the error criterion for channel updating. The results in hundreds and typically thousands of received symbols being proposed before the equalizer coefficients converge. It is not suitable for the time-variant channel of the GSM system. Unlike the blind equalization algorithms reported above, we consider in this project the problem of joint data and channel estimation based on Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE). As we reviewed, the blind MLSE algorithm exhibits very good convergence behavior. Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) provides telecommunication and data services to moving users, which is a digital cellular system developed by Group Special Mobile of Conference Europeenne des Postes et Telecommunications (CEPT) and its successor European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI). To increase end user satisfaction and network quality perception, GSM is evolved to GSM phase 2+ for advanced services. These services include advanced speech services, group call and related services, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Short Message Service (SMS). In GSM phase 2+, call re-establishment service is specified to allow a mobile station (MS) to resume a call in which the radio link has been temporarily interrupted due to interference or bad signal which is referred as a call interruption phenomenon. In this mechanism, if a communication channel is interrupted, the network still reserves the trunk and/or the channel for the interrupted call, and an interrupt ion timer is triggered. If the timer expires or the remote party hangs up the phone before the interrupt ion period is over, the interrupted call is actually forced terminated. Otherwise, the interrupted call is resumed by the call re-establishment service. GSM phase 2+ also provides a good compromise between the cost of the system and the quality of the services to the users. The half-rate speech codec (5.6 kbps) has been standardized to achieve this goal. The GSM half-rate speech codec can reasonably provide the same quality of service as the GSM full-rate speech codec in most cases. In GSM, the frequency carrier is divided into eight time slots per frame. Thus, mixing full- and half-rate calls in a frequency carrier results in eight full-rate calls, 16 half-rate calls, or any feasible combinations. Better frequency band utilization can be expected. Based on the GSM radio architecture, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) provides users data connections with variable data rates and high bandwidth efficiency. In contrast to the other services (except SMS), GPRS will not permanently allocate separate radio resource of the GSM. This reduces the waste of bandwidth when bursty communications are supported over a continuous circuit. Users of GPRS benefit from shorter access times and higher data rates. Compared with the voice circuit-switched services provided by GSM, the three services mentioned above generate new type of traffic (e.g., half-rate call traffic and GPRS packet data) to occupy the radio resource. Thus, it is important to allocate the radio channels to both the new service users and the traditional service (i.e., circuit-switched voice) users in an efficient way. In this dissertation, we propose channel allocation schemes for these services. Analytical models are built to investigate the performance of the channel allocation schemes. Simulation experiments are conducted to validate the analytical model. Based on the workload to the GSM system, our studies show the performance of each scheme, which provides guidelines for radio resource allocation for GSM. Two automatic frequency tuning loops (ATL) are mentioned in the thesis. One is for channel select filters of GSM transceivers, and the other is for a chopper instrumentation amplifier (IA). The ATL for channel select filters of GSM transceivers is based on the master-slave structure. The power consumption is 6.3 mW from a 1.8-V power supply. By controlling a 4 bit cap-array, the corner frequency can be varied from 186 kHz to 322 kHz with the frequency step of 7~12 kHz. The chip area is 1.475 mm 2. The other chip is a tunable gain chopper instrumentation amplifier which employs a Sallen-Key filter to attenuate the up-converted noise at chopper frequency. The ATL for the IA is based on direct-tuning structure, where the filter is connected with the tuning circuit, than that is connected with the signal path. The power consumption is 1.1 mW from a 1.2-V power supply. The gain of the IA is from 20.7 to 48.5 dB with the minimum bandwidth of 7.5 kHz. The chopper IA can achieve up to 95 dB of common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and power supply rejection ratio (PSRR). By using chopper technique, the input referred noise of the chopper IA can be reduced to 0.33 uVrms (0~96 kHz). By controlling a 3 bit cap-array, the corner frequency can be varied from 7.5 kHz to 14.4 kHz with the frequency step of 0.8~1.1 kHz. The chip area is 2.128 mm 2. The circuits are designed and implemented with TSMC CMOS 0.18-μm process.

Full textThe health area was one of the many beneficiaries of technological evolution, giving rise to new concepts that aim to improve or even prolong people’s lives. Wearable monitoring systems, along with wireless communications, form the basis of an emerging class of sensor networks. These information technologies enable the early detection of abnormal conditions and help in their prevention. The goal is to create one of these systems composed by a network of sensors that is implemented in a garment through conductive wires with connected sensors. In contact with the human body it has the function of doing several readings, e.g., body temperature, heartbeat, among others. Another goal is to detect user falls. The detection of falls is increasingly important for the user, as it is a situation that can endanger people’s health. For the development of this concept, Mobile Communications and the Global Positioning System are used. The first is a technology that allows to create emergency calls in response to system alarms, the second indicates the geographical location. To complement the system there is an online platform that registers the position of the user as well as his data. There is also an alert area in which the user can check his alarming values. In case of emergency the system contacts the emergency services or in special cases help can be obtained through an UAV.
