Abstract:
This work presents a novel microstrip dual-band bandpass filter (BPF) using meandros spirals and patch cells, which is proposed for the first time by this work. It occupies a very compact size of 0.0017 λg2. The proposed filter is designed to operate at Fo1=0.85 GHz and Fo2=1.85 GHz for GSM-850/GSM-1900 applications. In addition to the small size, it has several advantages in terms of wide fractional bandwidths (FBW), low insertion losses and high return losses at both channels. The simulated insertion losses at the lower and upper passbands are 0.05 dB and 0.1 dB, respectively. Another advantage of the proposed BPF of this work is the attenuated harmonics, where it is able to suppress 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th harmonics (4.11 Fo1) with -20 dB maximum harmonic level.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the phenomena of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO): often MVNO do not come from the telecom sector but they rent the network to mobile operators to become fully mobile operators on their own. So they compete directly not only with the other mobile operators but also with their hosting mobile operator.

Hosting MVNOs, supporting them from both operational and commercial perspectives are new challenges for the mobile operators: they have to set up a specific internal organization because they used to be a vertically integrated industrial structure. All of this represents tremendous changes for them.

This thesis describes first the strategic models for hosting MVNOs. The regulatory aspects, that are an essential driver for the liberalization of network economies, are then analyzed. The key point is: are the MVNO able to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of mobile markets.

Another important aspect is the modelling of a mobile network: the MVNOs will use some components while other components are unuseful for them. Without such model, it is impossible to derive the right costs and price to be charged to the MVNO in order to have a win win industrial model for both the MVNO and its hosting operator.

A case study of a corporate MVNO focusing on needs of multinationals is analyzed. Such case study describes all the steps for an economic actor to become MVNO from scratch. Such MVNO are not yet present although there is a market demand.

The last chapter makes a comparative study of the MVNO markets in the European Union.

Abstract:
There is evidence that athermal radiofrequency radiation can alter Heat Shock Protein (HSP) expression or protein phosphorylation, or alter MAP kinase signalling. Effects of long-term exposure in brain tissue due to repeated HSP perturbation (eg an inhibition of apoptosis) have been hypothesised (French et al, 2001). This study aimed to investigate the RNA expression profile (12,000 genes) and HSP family protein expression levels after either acute 1-hour or chronic 4-day intermittent exposures to simulated GSM radiation in a human primary fibroblast model. The results found minimal or no effects of GSM. Flasks were exposed to 900 MHz (217 Hz modulation) at 0.18 W/kg SAR within a Transverse Electromagnetic Mode chamber (TEM cell). Cultures rested for 2 hours before exposures. Affymetrix U95A microarray analysis of a single pilot set of experiments showed that about 40 genes were reported as upregulated >=2.5 fold in each condition. There was no evidence of altered expression of any MAPK-associated genes. Target genes reported in both conditions (CBFA2T1, ZNF148, ITGA1), and genes altered in one condition (CCS, PLEC1, BIRC5), and marginally altered HSP72 were selected for PCR analysis. No other members of the HSP family were altered. In three replicate experiments assayed by real-time PCR, six genes were either unchanged or showed randomly variable expression. However HSP72 RNA showed possible consistent slight upregulation of 1.37 +/- 0.21 in the chronic condition. Western immunoblots of HSP-60, -70, -72 and -V90 proteins showed no significant changes 5 hours after exposure. In preliminary studies using a serum starvation protocol, ERK-1 phosphorylation was unaltered after 5 or 30 minutes GSM (single experiments). When flasks were transiently cooled, ERK-1 phosphorylation was increased 20 minutes later, indicating a source of artefact in some protocols. An inflammatory challenge experiment with a low-dose of the cytokine IL-1???? found that acute GSM exposure post-challenge inhibited NF????B-mediated GRO???? induction by 1.5 fold (2 experiments). Preconditioning with mild heat induces transient inhibition of both NF????B signalling and apoptosis. Other studies indicate that EMF exposures similarly evoke cytoprotection. It is suggested that GSM evoked cytoprotective signalling in this inflammatory model.

Abstract:
Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is a cellular network that is popular and has been growing in recent years. It was developed to solve fragmentation issues of the first cellular system, and it addresses digital modulation methods, level of the network structure, and services. It is fundamental for organizations to become learning organizations to keep up with the technology changes for network services to be at a competitive level. A simulation analysisusing the NetSim tool in this paper is presented for comparing different cellular network codecsfor GSM network performance. Theseparameters such as throughput, delay, and jitter are analyzed for the quality of service provided by each network codec. Unicast application for the cellular network is modeled for different network scenarios. Depending on the evaluation and simulation, it was discovered that G.711, GSM_FR, and GSM-EFR performed better than the other codecs, and they are considered to be the best codecs for cellular networks. These codecs will be of best use to better the performance of the network in the near future.

Abstract:
Abstract This research, a part of more extensive research, presents pre-feasibility and unit sizing analysis of a hybrid system equipped with renewable energy resources in Tabriz, Iran (46°26/E, 38°06/N). This case study examines a GSM telecommunication station as a stand-alone load system. Renewable energy resources include photovoltaic (PV), a wind turbine as primary resources and fuel cell, and a battery stack as backup and energy storage systems, while an electrolyzer is used to provide the required hydrogen in the fuel cell system. Feasibility analysis and unit sizing are conducted based on climatic data such as solar irradiance and wind speed to derive an optimal model during the study. HOMER software is used to simulate the feasibility analysis, measure the size, and optimize the system. The results showed that the hybrid system performs cost-effectively. According to wind energy data and fuel-cell costs, sensitivity analysis is conducted. The load is a stand-alone GSM station that consumes 60kW per day with a maximum of 3.8kW per hour. This analysis showed that wind, PV, electrolyzer, battery, and fuel cells are not currently the best solutions. Shortly, according to improved prediction in fuel-cell technology, it is expected that this source as a backup will be the best option because it has decreased fuel-cell costs up to 65 percent. Some criteria such as size, application, and cost, have been mainly examined. These results provide excellent opportunities for this hybrid system. The result shows using fuel cells in a hybrid system is not affordable by considering current fuel cell price, and the main suggestion hybrid system configuration is PV, wind turbine, and battery, while for the nearby location of Tabriz by decreasing wind speed, using wind turbines is not feasible and more PV array should be added to the system.

Abstract:
The present work arose from problems occurred during the revamp of a pipeline SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system at the beginning of 2012, when occurred some unexpected system crashes that could interrupt the operation of the second major Brazilian pipeline maritime terminal. Before a system breakdown, we observed some signs, like fail-overs in the event log files. If the development and maintenance crews were aware of these events not only the problem causes could be better understood, but also the imminent crash could have been avoided. A faster and autonomous way for the system communicates its problems was necessary. ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) — a part of an autonomous communication system, which reports aircraft condition for a system on the ground, through satellite links and short messages — inspired us to develop an Internet of Things (IoT) system, using text messages (SMS, short message service) of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). Autonomous and short text messages are the keywords that drove our work, and the solution came through a text message gateway — the solution to get information in advance. This presentation will discuss the idea, hardware and software components, message format, applications and future perspectives.

Abstract:
Safety and reliability of BaseTransceiver Station (BTS) in Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) should be provided not only at the design stage and construction work, but also during the service. The technical conditions and safety of building structures is also dependent on the determination of geometric deviation of the entire structure and its individual components. This should be referred to the recommendations of code limits. The geodetic measurements of displacements and deformations of objects are extremely important to evaluate the stability and security of the structure and its maintenance. Steel trusses or concrete columns must meet the requirements of building standards and instructions as well as the standard requirements for the deviation limits during the construction phase and operational work. The primary and overarching objective of inventory of BTS is to ensure that the safety of the service and the users is fulfilled. The investigation of the reliability of BTS towers by determining the reliability index value using First Order Reliability Method (FORM) recommended in Eurocode 0 will be perfomed. The values of reliability index will be defined for the serviceability limit.

In 2020 13th International Pipeline Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2020-9681.

Abstract:
Abstract To ensure the safe transportation of energy, Canadian pipeline operators spend roughly $1.5 billion every year on pipeline integrity. The most practiced form of pipeline integrity is the use of inline inspection (ILI) tools. To ensure that an ILI inspection occurs with minimal to no complications, operators often utilize tracking techniques for the runs. These techniques can be costly and have large safety risks and environmental impacts due to the nature of using manpower to perform the operation. Using advanced Intemet of Things (IOT) telemetry devices, the tracking of ILI tools can be completed from remote locations by installing IOT devices semi-permanently along a pipeline right -of-way. This advancement has ensured the efficient, safe and reliable tracking of ILI tools while eliminating risks involved with conventional tracking. Furthermore, the current generation of IOT telemetry devices offers a tailored suite of ILI tracking sensors such as magnetics, ultrasonic frequency, extremely low frequency (22 Hz), and geophone. This multi sensor tracking solution increases an operator’s confidence in pig passages and flow rate estimations which allows the operator to optimize pump station bypassing. Finally, the IOT telemetry devices are supported by Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and satellite link which has ensured global coverage to remotely track tools. The communication module for the semi-permanent tracking solution is decided based on network availability and endpoints. This paper will present a comprehensive analysis that compares conventional ILI tracking to cutting-edge IOT telemetry ILI tracking and illustrates improvements in operational efficiency, operational risk, overall safety, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. In addition, case studies from recent tracking runs will be shared to demonstrate advancements in IOT telemetry, tracking sensor technology, dynamic user interface capabilities, advanced data dissemination methods, and high precision benchmarking.
