Kidane, Simret. "International plastics manufacturing companies’ response to covid-19 in terms of changes in strategy and sourcing." Thesis, Södertörns högskola, Institutionen för samhällsvetenskaper, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-45959.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to study how international Swedish plastics manufacturing companies have responded to covid-19 in terms of changes regarding corporate and business unit strategy and global sourcing. As research type a case study consisting of three case companies was applied. Mainly qualitative data using interviews were collected. The conclusions are that a regionalisation of the location of business units of a corporate group and a regionalisation of corporate strategies may take place and that covid-19 may enhance the process of regionalisation of sourcing of the case companies, which may lead to somewhat safer deliveries from suppliers, but higher prices for the case companies. It is suggested that in times of crisis, two types of SWOT-analyses should be made. One SWOT-analysis should cover strategic issues and thus be part of a strategy formulation process and lead to contingency strategies. The second SWOT-analysis should cover global sourcing issues and lead to contingency plan from a sourcing perspective.
Huvudsakligen kvalitativa data samlades in, genom intervjuer.

Abstract:

I uppsatsen delas verktygen in i skriftliga och rika kommunikationskanaler.

Abstract:
The main purpose with this study is to map whether Swedish companies adapt their CSR strategies in an international context. The purpose is also to examine the coordination between headquarters and subsidiaries and also about the reasons behind the chosen strategy. The study has been carried out through a case study consisting of a triangulation of methods. The triangulation consists of quantitative content analyses and qualitative semi-structured interviews. The findings show that a majority of the Swedish companies in the study uses a global CSR strategy. Additionally, the coordination used by companies with an adaptation strategy differ from the ones used by companies with a global strategy, as expected. Finally, the findings show split opinions considering the influence of culture while choosing CSR strategy.

Abstract:
Uppsala county is the only county in Sweden with an L (Läkemedel, drugs/medicine) in the ANDT-strategy (ANDT-L strategy). Because Uppsala county is the only county with an L in the ANDT-strategy it is of intrest to investigate how the L has been implemented on a regional, municipal and local level in the county. This includes how different actors have gotten information about the strategy and how they have worked with this information and worked with the ANDT-L strategy.  The purpouse of the study was to investigate how the work in relation to drug abuse and drug addiction was managed in accordance to Uppsala county’s ANDT-L strategy on different levels in the county.  The choosen method for this purpouse was a qualitativ method with an inductive approach. Interviews and groupinterviews where performed based on purposive sampling of informants. The interviews where performed with representatives from the county administrative board, the region (the hospital), three municipalities, Uppsala university and a user assosiation (drug assosiation) in Uppsala county.  From the analysis five main themes emerged: The ANDT-L strategy in the organization, Efforts and Situation, Collaboration, Network and Information, Added value and ” Further needs and Prescribing. To these main themes 17 sub themes emerged.  Initiatives related to drug abuse and drug addiction was ongoing in different ways on different levels within the county. The work was not always performed based on the ANDT- L strategy. There were different views on whether the L in the strategy had added any value. Several further needs were discoverd, one of them were problems with prescription initiatives of addictive drugs and this problem can only be solved with government-level initiatives.

Abstract:
In 1972, the United Nations (UN) held its first international environmental conference in Stockholm with 113 participating countries and during the conference, participants agreed that the environmental issue is as important to humanity as peace and development. The concept of sustainable development arose in the 1980s and gained global spread in 1987 when the World Commission launched its report on environment and development and defined sustainable development as "A development that satisfies today's needs without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their needs." During the 2000s, the United Nations has highlighted the importance of companies taking responsibility for their activities and contributing to sustainable development through two initiatives. This has led to companies wanting to take responsibility for their business but do not know how to proceed. The purpose of this study is to provide knowledge of how sustainability strategy can be formulated using the UN Global Compact and the UN Sustainable Development Goal and how the Sustainability Strategy can be implemented. The theoretical framework is based primarily on a model that is clearly focused on implementing sustainability strategies, but also research that addresses difficulties with implementing sustainability strategies. The study also contains an attachment with important concepts. The method is based on qualitative interviews with employees at BillerudKorsnäs and is supplemented by a documentary study. The results of the interviews and the document study are described in the study section. The analysis connects results and theory to study how BillerudKorsnäs handled implementation of sustainability strategy and difficulties with this. The study shows that BillerudKorsnäs has dealt with the implementation of the sustainability strategy and has formulated a sustainability strategy that can clearly be linked to the UN Sustainable Development Initiative.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Corporations around the world are today acknowledging more and more the need of long-term sustainability strategies integrated into their core businesses. This has led to the use of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework. H&M and UNIQLO are no different. They are established global retailing companies and heavily affected by the consumers demand of a sustainable work process. The demands are often heard when news hits of problems in the supply-chain. This can be issues like unsatisfactory working conditions in factories, environmental issues caused by production and general imbalance of labor policies. Such problems have put pressure on the companies to enact a proper reporting framework for their sustainability efforts and that is the focus of this thesis. The objective is to understand how well the organizations’ have been using CSR and the goal is to look at their behavior within their supply chain processes and their environmental focus. We will then benchmark them according to the sustainability measurement framework called Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). GRI is a framework widely used by the top global companies today and as it has a diversified perspective on CSR; it can expand the views of CSR from the consumer and the corporate perspective to a global reporting perspective. That perspective is unbiased and globally accepted. The conclusions drawn in the end of the thesis, shows the similarities and differences of the companies CSR actions and the gap that they need to fill to really strengthen their focus on CSR. A way forward is to understand these gaps and create a strategy which will help the companies overcome these obstacles in the long run.

Abstract:
Introduction: Independent stores in small towns have long been at the center of different external factors that have affected them in various ways. For a year now, they have had to endure the problem of surviving in a crisis where people are urged not to stay in shops.  Purpose: The purpose of the study was to analyze how independent small-town shops work with a change strategy for economic survival during the Covid-19 crisis.  Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative research method, through a abductive approach based on semi-structured interviews. A selection was made with five interviews where four respondents were either CEOs or owners of the enterprises and one interview with Karlskrona city association. Answers to the question regarding how they should act for economic survival were sought by studying theories about how SME previously used change strategy in crisis situations combined with the study's empirical material.  Conclusion: The conclusion of the study was that small-town shops have implemented some form of change strategy for economic survival in the crisis, despite the fact that they previously did not have a clear strategy to start from. This is mainly through a focus on cost reductions and adaptation to consumers' wishes in relation to restrictions. The results of the study also show that all companies have absorbed lessons, which makes them more equipped for the future, not only for a potentially new global health crisis but also awareness that consumption behaviors can fluctuate sharply and how to deal with such phenomena.

Holst, David, and Anton Norberg. "Studie av Global Risk Appetite Index : Hur kan det användas för att förbättra trendföljande strategier?" Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-300800.

Full text
Abstract:
A regular problem for investment managers who use trend following strategies are that they often find themselves badly positioned when at the end of a trend. In this study it is shown how a risk appetite index, Global Risk Appetite Index (GRAI), can be used in order to predict these trend breaks and thereby improve the performance of trend following strategies. The index is implemented as an indicator for three different trend following strategies and given the right parameters, the return of all three strategies is increased during backtesting on data from the previous 16 years. In general, the strategies give the highest return in relation to risk when signal that the trend will reverse is given 2 to 3 weeks after the index reaches one of the extreme zones, Panic or Euphoria. These extreme zones are calculated as vales under the 5:th or over the 95:th percentile of the index’s value over a certain window back in time. The best result is achieved when this timespan is 2 to 3 years. Furthermore, alternate ways to calculate Global Risk Appetite Index are studied. The assets that are analysed in order to quantify the risk appetite are varied and it is shown that a version of GRAI analyzing only 6 more summarizing market indices give better results when used in trend following models. This is a clear simplification from the 64 assets used in the original version of the index.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Health promotion is significant for reducing health inequalities at local and global levels. The Swedish Government has developed a policy for sustainable global development in the pursuit of implementing Agenda's 2030 sustainability goals in the international arena. Svalorna Latinamerika works in Peru with implementing the global goals at local level. Aim: The purpose of the field study is to analyze how Svalorna Latinamerika works strategically with involving local citizens to participate in the development work at the local level. The work is based on the global sustainability goals (Agenda 2030). Methods: The study applied a qualitative method and deductive approach to test whether the theory could be applied in to achieve sustainable development goals. Community participation theory claims that participation (i) is a strategy within the health promotion work that aims to involve local residents in the developing work that affects their lives (ii) it creates trust and legitimacy for the development work (iii) it can strengthen people's self- esteem, knowledge and development of new skills and (iv) the level of participation can affect the sustainability and efficiency of social development. A targeted sampling technique was applied to select the interviewees while data collection was performed through semi- structured interviews. Furthermore, manifest content analysis was used to analyze the collected material. Result: Participation as a health promoting strategy was applied by the non-profit organization. The level of participation consisted of partnership, a collaboration with both top-down and bottom-up approach. The co-operation and involvement of local citizens in decision-making processes created trust and legitimacy and enabled the development program to meet local needs and conditions. It also resulted in increased participation in the program's capacity building activities. Conclusion: The involvement of local citizens in decision-making processes created the conditions for the citizen to strengthen the individual and the community empowerment. NORBERG, MARIA. "Gender Equality across Global Organizations: Towards a Framework for Increasing Gender Equality." Thesis, KTH, Industriell ekonomi och organisation (Inst.), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-240672.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze how Global Organizations work with Gender Equality, what type of challenges they experience and how they can be addressed. Secondarily, it addresses how Global Organizations can create an international Gender Equality strategy and how Gender Equality work differs among four countries. Earlier research has focused on gender equality as a stand-alone topic, and few models exist to incorporate such work in global organizations that efficiently manages to address the complexity of gender equality across varying cultures and business units. By surveying current research in gender equality, change management, and cultural management, this thesis proposes a framework for change that more adequately manages the inherently subjective nature of gender, together with the cross-cultural complexities of global organizations. The results, analysis, and discussion are based on a literature review enumerating the components of the synthesized framework and on interviews with two Swedish multinational companies, one construction company, and a mining company. Countries of interest are Czech Republic, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States. Analyzed through this framework, the results indicate an increasing gap between different business units across the organizations, despite an overall increase of Gender Equality in total. The framework suggests that informal systems need to be addressed more explicitly and that centralized initiatives need to better account for geopolitical contexts to stay relevant when educating, informing and dictating change initiatives. The nature of the problem suggests it be managed by a shaping type of strategy with an emphasis on international networks dedicated to the issue. The similarities between Gender equality-specific models, selected change-models and cultural descriptive models indicate that there is possible to amalgamate insights from different academic fields more coherently. Utilizing the definition of gender and confirming the subjective nature of Gender Equalityissues leads to strategy models and cultural descriptions that - independent of Gender Equality work - confirm and strengthens the key takeaways from each model. The research shows that there are overlapping interests and areas of interest between academia and the industry, which is something that can be further developed.

Abstract:

The new global Swedish armed forces are putting new strains, especially in the logistics chain where the distances increase and the conditions of operation are not as clear as during the Cold War. The purpose of this paper is to examine the requirements from a doctrinal perspective that might be claimed in the logistics chain at the strategic level, coupled with strategic movement at a future Swedish operation. As empirical evidence in this paper the doctrines and regulations are used that exist in Sweden and in NATO, which deals with the logistics chain at the strategic level and strategic mobility. A case study of Operation Iraqi Freedom is used to exemplify the requirements that may be imposed on the logistics chain at the strategic level. Thesis method is description and case study. The case study exemplifies the problems that may arise. Empiric then forms the basis for analysis and discussion and a number of conclusions emerge. The conclusions that meet the purpose of this paper is to call for a precise logistics chain to deliver in time increases this is made available by the requirement of a good logistics management.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research study is to explore how decision-makers at Born Global enterprises form their strategies during the pre-internationalisation phase. In this study the researcher has combined theories from two academic fields, namely the strategic management field and the international entrepreneurship field. The main theories inherent in the study are: the strategic lenses and the strategic schools of thought (theories that belong to the strategic management field) and Born Global (theory that belongs to the international entrepreneurship field). These recently mentioned theories has been combined, leading to a depiction of a general theoretical framework, illustrating for how the researcher has made use of the chosen theories in the study. In order to fulfil the study’s aim, the researcher has conducted a qualitative and multiple-case study, where seven different case companies (Algoryx Simulation AB, CodeMill AB, COS Systems AB, North Kingdom Design & Communication AB, Oryx Simulations AB, Prediktera AB and Xore AB) from a peripheral area of northern Sweden (Umeå and Skellefteå) have been investigated through semistructured interviews. After performing the seven interviews, the obtained empirical data has been analysed by using the analysis strategy theoretical propositions and the analytical technique of cross-case analysis. From this study, the researcher has found out that in the pre-internationalisation phase decision-makers at Born Global enterprises form their strategies in accordance with the configuration school, where these individuals alternates by different strategic making procedures along the process. This in turn implies that these individuals make use of a mixture of proactive and reactive strategy making procedures along the process, where the character of the strategy is determined by their respective applied procedures. Moreover, the research findings have showed that the selection of strategy making procedures is highly dependent on the company’s context. Additionally, the research findings indicated that legitimate key individuals such as the company’s founder/-s or entrepreneur/-s are highly involved and influential in the companies’ strategy-making process during the pre-internationalisation phase.

Abstract:
This thesis is set out with the purpose to investigate the potential shifts in how victory is presented in the duration of contemporary conflicts. The argumentation is focused on how democratic states, involved in wars, seem to announce different statements regarding victory in its outreach to its inhabitants. This paper will study the case of the American administration of George W. Bush, who initiated and ruled during the first years in the Global War on Terror. By investigating the seven annual State of the Union speeches in a combined quantitative–qualitative method, with Martel’s theoretical framework on victory, the analysis searched after such potential shifts or static usage of the linguistics approach to victory. The answer to the stated research question according to the study conducted by this author is that the publicly announced implications of victory have been subjected to an ongoing shift during the examined time period.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the topic of internal outsourcing of mystery shopping management within the multinational company Ipsos. The company has currently set up a Global Support Center for mystery shopping in Prague. The Global Support Center is supposed to create shopper panels (i.e. groups of mystery shoppers available to conduct mystery shopping tasks in a given country) in as many countries as possible and manage mystery shopping projects in these countries from the Czech Republic. The goal of this thesis is to find the most suitable market for the shopper panel construction, the market where panel construction is a priority over other markets. After analysing the different markets worthy of consideration through an application of the CAGE analysis and the Porter´s Five Forces, France has been chosen as the most reasonable market to pursue when constructing the shopper panels.

Witt, Alessa Valentina Josephine. "Global hidden champions : the internationalisation paths, entry modes and underlying competitive advantages of Germany's and Britain's global 'top three' niche players." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26039.

Full text
Abstract:
Current theoretical insights into firm internationalisation have mainly focused on large American multinationals or on smaller early internationalising firms. Global niche players, often competing alongside or even complementary, have been less researched. They, like larger players, often strive to go global and dominate their market segments simply to survive and endure processes of global consolidation and often it is necessary to achieve top global positions. One such successful global niche strategy variant is ‘Global Hidden Champions’ (GHCs), which are low profile, global top three under US$ 5 billion firms, mainly found in Germany (Simon, 2012). The question becomes pressing: how do GHCs reach world market leadership? This study seeks to identify through which internationalisation paths and associated market entry modes 30 GHCs investigated from Germany and Britain reached global dominance and the specific competitive advantages without which such strategies would not have succeeded. This thesis takes an evolutionary historic perspective by distinguishing enduring with less-enduring GHCs, established at various points in time between 1838 and 2007. A qualitative multiple case study approach is used based on 30 cases, 15 from each country. The abductive stance facilitates deductions of existing theoretical frameworks, whilst also allowing exploratory new themes to emerge. Structured and semi-structured interviews, combined with documentation, allow triangulation of findings and help minimise bias. Guided by the conceptual framework, data has been thematically coded, analysed and systematically explored, allowing several new themes to emerge. Not one single GHC was found pursuing the traditional Uppsala Model internationalisation path. Instead 43% were identified as Born Globals (BGs); 20% as Born-Again Globals (BAGs); but no less than 37% emerged as quite different hybrid internationalisers, which because of their quite distinctive traits, were denoted ‘Re- Born-Again Globals’ (Re-BAGs). The analysis involved innovative methodological analysis, which further clarified some partial overlap of BGs, BAGs, and re-BAGs with Uppsala Model features, yet decided differences in terms of tempo and direction. All three alternative paths led to top three global market leadership positions, depending on the GHCs context and historical circumstances. Nevertheless, recently established GHCs pursued BG paths, whereas more enduring GHCs almost all followed BAG and re-BAG paths. Younger British GHCs frequently embarked on early proactive paths, whilst their more enduring German equivalents pursued more belated internationalisation routes. History emerged as pivotal. BAGs and re-BAGs were both distinguished by critical incidents which, in all 17 cases, shifted strategies on to much more proactive internationalisation paths. German GHCs, though, shifted primarily in response to technology advances, whereas British GHCs typically responded to specific management appointments. Literature on accelerated internationalisation paths, such as in relation to BGs, remains unclear on commitments beyond trade. Yet, 90% of GHCs deployed substantial foreign direct investment (FDI), in addition to mere trade activity. Initially, German GHCs grew organically focusing on neighbouring markets. In contrast, British GHCs often used acquisitions and targeted more global, in particular, Commonwealth markets. FDI thus emerged as a crucial addition to export activity in all three alternative paths followed by BGs, BAGs and re-BAGs enabling them to sustain leading global market positions. Yet, such paths were in turn contingent upon competitive advantages. GHCs from both countries complied remarkably closely with 6 out of 8 of Simon’s (2009) identified theoretical HC Model traits: being ‘leadership with ambitious goals’; ‘innovation’; ‘high-performance employees’; ‘closeness to customer’; ‘globalisation’, and ‘focus’. More in depth, albeit exploratory, analysis further uncovered the critical role played by ‘visions and values’ and ‘brand’, leading to a new tentative theoretical GHC Model. This new Model, moreover, recognises a virtuous cycle of market leadership advantages from which more enduring GHCs particularly benefitted. It also integrates comfortably with Teece’s (2014) model of dynamic capabilities, extending his framework by including market leadership approaches and more precise competitive advantages of the GHC Model, alongside more specific concepts relating to entrepreneurial orientation. In summary, this study contributes to the knowledge of how both long-standing and newer German and British GHCs conquer global markets by unveiling their specific and successful internationalisation paths, market entry mode choices and their underlying competitive advantages.

Abstract:
Background The rapid pace of globalization along with internationalization, challenge global MNCs to contemplate with a wide range of stakeholders. The demands of integrating CSR into the strategic outlook is becoming more essential, in order to balance home-country’s and host-country’s expectations. Previous research has defined three different CSR strategies that is utilized when having business operations in multiple countries. Although, there is a limited research regarding the design and implementation of these strategies and what influences each approach. Hence, this gap makes it interesting for further research.   Purpose The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influencing factors for MNCs to use a global, glocal or local CSR strategy, when internationalizing.   Method This thesis is based on a qualitative research approach, where the empirical findings were gathered through interviews with five Swedish MNCs, with one participant from each corporation, working extensively with CSR.   Findings Most MNCs believe they have a global CSR strategy, while the findings implied that the sampled MNCs are moving towards a glocal CSR approach. It is evident that actual strategic practices deviate from theory, however, the major factors found were in consistency with existing literature. New factors that were identified that influences MNCs choice of strategy were listed corporations, low versus high-risk countries, and different approaches of a centralized structure.

Abstract:
Background – Increase in global competition, technological changes and demanding customers have resulted in more knowledge-intensive, unstable, complicated and an uncertain environment. In order to overcome these demand uncertainties and tough circumstances, manufacturers are required to investigate methods to increase flexibility. To achieve the flexibility improvements, each component of supply chain such as suppliers, manufacturing plants, warehouses, and distributors must possess the potential to be flexible. Theory implies that the main link between company’s upstream supply chain namely suppliers and its own business unit are the sourcing strategy. Usually sourcing practitioners distinguish between sourcing strategies using portfolio models. They normally categorize purchased items based on the strategic importance of the item and characteristics of its supply market. It is a critical issue to explore how different sourcing strategies, for different categories of procured items, can influence sourcing flexibility. Purpose– The purpose has been diagnosed as to study how the prerequisites of Bombardier’s procurement procedures along with its associated strategies, can affect the flexibility that can be provided through sourcing namely sourcing flexibility. This study desires to investigate the concept of sourcing flexibility with considerations on category level. It can be beneficial to investigate how different strategies, related to different categories of procured component, can influence the level of sourcing flexibility specified to that category. This would lead us to two key questions: How can sourcing flexibility be defined in Bombardier and why is it required? How can sourcing strategies influence sourcing flexibility considering different categories of components? Methodology– To provide appropriate definitions for sourcing flexibility and strategic procurement, this study went through a comprehensive review on the relevant literatures. By a deep analysis, accompanied with several unstructured interviews on one of the undergoing projects in the company, the drivers for the sourcing flexibility have been diagnosed. The procured components have been categorized into four categories of strategic, bottleneck, leverage, and noncritical through 4 different structured quantitative questionnaires. 33 diverse individuals with purchasing and/or engineering background answered those questionnaires. The categorization criteria have been extracted out from two models suggested by Kraljic (1983) and Olsen & Ellram (1997). Four independent components, one from each category, were selected for further observations. Finally, the links between sourcing strategies and sourcing flexibilities were expansively analyzed through 9 semi structured interviews with company’s strategic purchasers and suppliers’ representatives. Conclusion– Sourcing flexibility can be defined from two perspectives. First one refers to the capability of the focal firm to change the structure of its upstream supply chain. Second aspect refers to the ability of company’s suppliers to provide it with flexibility in three dimensions of delivery, volume and product. Both two aspects along with related dimensions can be measured in three different conditions of required, actual and potential by using range, mobility and uniformity as measuring elements. The results showed that the first perspective has a direct relationship to the sourcing strategies that focal firm may apply for different categories of procured component. Furthermore, the availability of second perspective is highly dependent on the relationship between the focal company and its suppliers, where strategic procurement plays an indispensable role. Based on the results the required level of sourcing flexibility, related to each category, differs significantly with other categories. The findings also suggested that the levels of delivery, volume and product flexibility have a close connection to the diverse strategies and attributes of the four different categories. Additionally they are well dependent on the internal operational capabilities of the suppliers along with the established relationship between buyer and supplier. Originality/Value– Main portions of previous studies have explored the concepts of sourcing flexibility and strategic procurement separately. Although, there exists some narrow numbers that have analyzed the relationship between sourcing strategies and sourcing flexibility to some limited extent. This study tries to contribute to the existing literature by empirically exploring the principal reasons for companies necessitating to increase sourcing flexibility. It investigates how sourcing flexibility can be improved through strategic procurement. The main contribution is to consider sourcing flexibility from the category perspective. Latter is a subject that has been neglected in the previous literatures. It is extremely hard to find literature which has analyzed sourcing flexibility at the category level. This report analyses the level of sourcing flexibility specified to different categories of strategic, bottleneck, leverage, and noncritical components. It suggests some factors that may influence the selection of a specific sourcing flexibility strategy regarding different component categories. Finally, it may introduce some extra elements that can be influential on the level of sourcing flexibility dimensions. Some examples of those influential elements are bargaining power and establishment of a close relationship.

Abstract:
Global Account Management (GAM) is a global strategic, relationship oriented and marketing management program. In today’s highly competitive business scenario GAM has become one of the most significant strategic alliance by many companies with their customers to have the competitive advantage over their counter-part. It is a systematically approached program specifically in sales for managing strategically important customers globally. It is an ongoing process since many years now for all the global companies even though the rate of success is not so fast. Globalization has got an important role here for GAM analysis where the supplier firm engages it-self in standardizing marketing programs. It coordinates worldwide activities and integrates competitive moves across country markets. Hence Shi et al. (2010: 626) suggests firms can increase the use of GAM strategies when faced with increasing globalization. This report reviews the scientific literature and empirical studies of many past researchers on GAM analysis, its drivers and strategy and concludes the importance of GAM for all global companies. The objective of the study was to understand how global account management and strategy helps in managing global customers. It is a case study. The research problem was approached with a careful research design, which consists of a theoretical part and an empirical part. The theoretical part of the study defines and clarifies the GAM analysis where an integrative theoretical model is drawn to describe GAM relationship between a global account customer and a focal supplier. The empirical part will explore along with literature reviews and provide a quantitative analysis to the research study. Through extensive literature reviews, case study and empirical interviews, the current study developed answers to the research question, “As globalization increasing, how global account management helps companies to manage customers globally?”

During the preceding decades, brand management in the international environment hasbeen frequently discussed. The choice of a clear branding strategy and clear goals of what acompany wants to achieve is of great importance. Furthermore, companies that act in a globalenvironment need to decide upon whether to be standardized across these markets or to adaptto each specific market. Purpose: To reach an understanding of the factors influencing the choice of internationalbranding strategy by global standardization or local adaptation. Methodology: A case study has been used in this research in order to meet the purpose. Sincethis thesis is of a qualitative character the empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews within three respondent segments in the case organization: management, communication and sales. Conclusion: A conclusion drawn from this research is the importance of internalcommunication, when it comes to the formulation and implementation of brand strategies. - Factors influencing the decision of a global standardize brand strategy can be; the possibilityto become a strong global player, decreased expenses of marketing, economics of scale. - Factors influencing the decision of a local adaptation strategy can be; cultural differences, history and heritage, better knowledge of the local market. Suggestions for further research: Further research could be to conduct a more thoroughstudy with more respondents from different multinational companies and also to look at thecustomers' point of view.

This dissertation comprises three essays of a multilevel investigation into the strategies of high-technology firms to build and maintain competitive advantage through effective policies for innovation, global sourcing, and knowledge management. Through a combination of conceptual and empirical analyses that extend the existing theoretical boundaries in each of these areas, I contribute to our current body of knowledge and establish a solid foundation on which future related research will be built. In particular, I weave together classic and contemporary literature of strategic management, entrepreneurship, international business, and organizational economics to reveal how macro- and micro-level factors impact the activities selected, tradeoffs made, and performance of firms in regional and global settings.

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), the largest telecommunication carrier in the world, was broken up, and reconstituted NTT mad a new start on July 1, 1999. On that day, free competition in the telecommunication industry began in Japan. And, NTT Communication, new subsidiary, launched international telecommunication services as a no-regulated company. In many other countries, the telecommunication market has already been deregulated. Since there is no longer a distinction between long-distance and local telecommunication carriers, competition has become more severe. Globally, telecommunication has turned into a commodity. It is difficult to differentiate the service from rivals. Furthermore, due to recent data communication and Internet growth, the demand for the integrated network has increased. As business is becoming borderless, to overcome the time and distance, a global network is necessary for multinational companies. In this severe situation, Japanese telecommunication carriers, including NTT and new common carriers (NCCs), have to play the game with these strong experienced players. The mission of NTT, the leading company in the Japanese telecommunication market, is not only to win among Japanese competitors, but also to help strengthen the Japanese telecommunication industry as well. Therefore, at this point, NTT's global strategy is critically important. This thesis begins with an analysis of the Japanese telecommunication industry. It comparatively analyzes NTT's global strategy with those of global rivals, taking NTT's capabilities into consideration, and concludes by offering recommendations concerning NTT's global strategy.

This dissertation is centrally concerned with the management of a firm's global non-market environment. The non-market environment of a given firm is conceived as the set of relationships, confrontational or collaborative, that it establishes with actors other than its clients, suppliers and competitors. Because the actions carried out by non-market actors increasingly span multiple country borders, the appropriate level of analysis of this phenomenon is the global arena. In order to better understand how firms manage their non-market environment this thesis focuses in on one particular type of non-market actor: the so-called Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). The reason for choosing NGOs as the central counterpart of firms in the non-market domain is due to its increasing influence in the economic, social and political arenas, and the fact that their influence on firms is still relatively unexplored. While this does not detract from the fact that other non-market actors, namely governments, play a crucial role in the behavior and performance of firms, it is important to acknowledge that the transnational nature of a growing number of NGOs is making firms face challenges that are different in nature to the ones they have had of address in the past. In order to explore this relevant topic, this dissertation is organized in two parts. The first one is conceptual in nature. It provides a framework that integrates the main perspectives in the field of non-market strategy and also helps characterize the sources of internationality of a given non-market environment. The second, by contrast, is an empirical study. It examines the relationships between oil firms operating in the Ecuadorian Amazon and NGOs concerned with the social, environmental and economic impacts of this activity.
(Cont.) While extant research on interorganizational non-market behavior has favored structural approaches, the project developed here takes an interpretive perspective. More concretely, instead of trying to explain why NGOs and firms interact in a given way based on their size, the nature of their business, their objectives, or the strategies they favor, the focus is placed here on the extent and the mechanisms by which a given situation is interpreted in different ways by different actors. As a whole, this dissertation joins a small but growing chorus of voices interested in issues such as sustainability, corporate citizenship and ethical management. Because of the incipiency of this academic domain and the interpretive lens chosen to study it, the contributions of this thesis have a marked foundational character. Both the conceptual model developed in the first part and the cognitive perspective proposed in the second aim at providing tools that help make sense of a corporate environment that is radically different from that of just a decade ago.

Few companies globally source and manage commercial transportation for frequent and high volumes of explosive cargo for the U. S. Department of Defense. U.S. regulations are strict and economically competitive options are limited. The challenge is even more problematic when the company has not developed an internal capability to efficiently manage logistics transportation. Companies view logistics and supply chain management as crucial to their overall success, though most do not claim it as a core competency. Instead, companies often outsource logistics operations and management to 3rd Party Logistics and other transportation solution providers. This paper explores how a company dealing with frequent shipments of explosive, Department of Defense cargo need not fully outsource logistics operations and management. Rather this paper shows how a company can quickly and cost-effectively improve their internal logistics capability while utilizing the benefits of logistics outsourcing. It is imperative that a company evolving its logistics capability maintain flexibility yet realize the advances in the transportation outsourcing industry. This research is distinctive in that it provides a case study of an organization that utilizes global partners supplying the U.S. Government in substantial volumes and must operate within the confines of hazardous goods regulations and archaic United States Department of Defense shipping regulations.

This thesis examines how firms in countries with weak governance institutions access outside (technological and financial) resources and capabilities. The first essay challenges current views regarding the efficacy of renting foreign jurisdictions through cross-listings and shows that reputational mechanisms are more important. The second essay, which follows a group of Korean firms through the sequence of liberalizations and political changes since 1987, provides further evidence that reputational mechanisms are central in obtaining external resources and capabilities. The third essay suggests that Mexican firms selected alternative strategies besides cross-listings before liberalization, and that one of these strategies (forming a cross-border alliance) turned out to be more effective. The timing of liberalization is the key shift variable that determines which Mexican firms cross-listed and which firms instead formed cross-border alliances and/or acquired political connectedness. This thesis also demonstrates the complementarity of investing in domestic influence and the establishment of cross-border strategic alliances.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the decision process of strategic positioning within global supply chains. The research provides insights into how companies currently form positioning decisions, and set out to develop a systematic methodology to assist practitioners in forming their strategic positioning decisions. Manufacturing in the UK is increasingly exposed to the effects of global competition. Many companies are facing difficulties to define the most advantageous position in their global supply chains in order to maximise their business competitiveness. The position of a company is concerned with deciding a boundary and configuration of internal and external business activities to the company and is directly related to initiatives such as outsourcing, make or buy, and offshoring. Unfortunately, current methodologies and tools do not provide adequate support to provide a holistic view for making such decisions. Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a generic and practical methodology that is an integrated and holistic approach that assists practitioners to deal with strategic positioning within global supply chains. The research programme commenced by exploring the process and content of positioning decision from four actual manufacturing companies. The results from the exploratory case studies and existing contribution from literature have then been synthesised to form a pilot methodology. This is captured in the form of a paper-based workbook. This methodology has then been evaluated and refined through a primary application in two case studies with the researcher taking a role as a participant. Finally, wider applicability of the methodology has been assessed through four more case studies covering different types of manufacturing with the researcher not intervening but instead observing. The final methodology referred to in this thesis as the “SPGC methodology” has demonstrated that it provides practical support to industrial decision making. The outcome of this research is the step-by-step SPGC methodology supporting practitioners to deal with strategic positioning within global supply chains. The overall approach has been demonstrated to be feasible, usable and useful, and has been used in a range of manufacturing companies. This research has filled an industrial need and literature gap and has made a significant contribution to the knowledge on how manufacturing companies can form a strategic positioning within global supply chains.

Abstract:
The European Defence Industry is a relevant academic and political question, as Member States cannot guarantee, per se, autonomously, their Defence needs. In this sense, the European Union has been defining and developing mechanisms that allow the indispensable participation of all Member States in joint projects, in an integration process that contributes to increase their strategic autonomy. However, the European Defence Industry continues to be fragmented, without a joint procurement, with several types of similar equipment for the same purpose and with little investment in R&D. Thus, it becomes necessary to better understand the specificities of the European Union's Defence Industry, as well as its risks and potentials inherent in its (in)viability. In this context, and building from a strategic prospective analysis, this Thesis seeks to assess the most likely scenario for the European Defence Industry in the long term, taking into account the interests of the two largest military powers in the European Union, which are France and Germany, in order to discuss which is the most favorable strategy that should be adopted in the future.

Abstract:
In spite of our substantive knowledge about global un-sustainability, insufficient progress is being made to halt systematic socio-ecological decline. Much information is readily available on downstream impacts, with limited focus on upstream activities driving such effects. This thesis uses backcasting from socioecological principles for sustainability to identify major upstream human activities violating these principles, the underlying drivers reinforcing such activities, alternative practices already in use with potential for significant expansion, and emerging opportunities for action across different sectors of society. Results show emerging patterns of high magnitude violations across all four socio-ecological principles indicating nexus points in energy, transportation and agriculture. These activities are reinforced by our societal structure which is designed to meet human needs through a growth paradigm which in turn does not adequately consider the ongoing health of ecosystems or the sustainable functioning of society itself. Shifting to potential solutions, examples focus on themes such as renewable energy, green chemicals, organic agriculture, and self-organising network structures. Recognising that these actions may not be enough, the thesis explores elements of a global vision which could guide progress. Emerging nexus points for societal change include education, information flows (particularly the media), design (as a leverage point), self-organization, and governance.

Competitive pressures in manufacturing industries have led to an increased utilization of strategic sourcing initiatives: among them is low cost sourcing. While low cost sourcing has been used extensively for direct materials, the penetration of low cost sourcing in indirect materials is small. This thesis develops a global sourcing strategy for durable tooling and a methodology to help firms determine the best sourcing alternative for indirect materials. A low cost sourcing study done at Carrier compares the landed cost and quality of sheet metal stamping dies sourced from both China and the U.S. The study estimates that there is an opportunity to save 25-50% from low cost sourcing without compromising quality. The sourcing strategy presents a framework for: 1) determining whether to source durable tooling locally, regionally or globally, and 2) for comparing the return (using total cost of ownership) and risk (country/regional) of sourcing alternatives. The primary deliverable of this research is a standard work process which integrates the durable tooling sourcing strategy into Carrier's current product development process. The product development process manages a product's lifecycle from concept to launch.
(cont.) The secondary deliverables, which are necessary to execute the durable tooling sourcing strategy, are: 1) sourcing decision matrix, 2) preferred tooling supplier database, 3) country selection framework, 4) lifecycle cost calculator, and 5) balanced tooling supplier scorecard. The research leading to the development of the described sourcing strategy was conducted jointly between the MIT Leaders for Manufacturing Program and Carrier Corporation, a division of United Technologies.

The banking industry is known to have certainty only about uncertainty, change is only constant in adopting the technologies for developing innovative products and services, and yet the opportunities of arbitrage are everywhere including in economical settings and business strategies. The retail banking industry will be analyzed to understand why some banks make sustainable profits while others are less successful. We will analyze what business strategies would best work for such dynamic industry even as banking appears to be a commodity business. A systematic study will be set out to model the dynamics of different positioning of Delta Model and the effect of the underlying interactions. We will walk through the analysis of why the innovation along with the customer targeting and the operational effectiveness are crucial to implement the right business strategies. We also study banking case studies relevant to the business strategies. Finally, we present the conclusions with some recommendations in order for banks to thrive in the industry for years to come during both war times and peace times.

Abstract:
This study reflects an investigation into four elements that could affect global expansion strategies within the hotel industry. In both emerging and developed economies, the increased growth within the services sector has become more apparent. There is considerable knowledge and literature available on the process of internationalisation, globalisation and expansion within the services sector and as this information is important to understand the internationalisation process itself, the decision to expand (cross border) presents a number of opportunities and challenges to the hotel industry. Hotels are comprised of a number of divisions and departments, which collectively offer unique services and facilities to various markets. Within this context, careful consideration is required with respect to an organisation‟s overall strategic objectives, the internal structure and how government and cultural influences and differences affect global expansion. Organisational matters such as strategic objectives as well as operational functions such as financial, marketing and sales, human resources and organisational design must also be considered as hotels require synergy within each of these various components in order to function optimally. When international or globalisation opportunities present themselves or are proactively sought, organisations need to ensure that various factors are clearly understood, analysed and identified. These include the most appropriate strategy required, the organisations own internal capacity levels, governmental influences and cultural dynamics. An in-depth literature review regarding the internationalisation process was conducted where-after a review was compiled and interviews set up with directors of hotel groups who are responsible for global expansion within their respective organisations. The sample included three local South African and two international hotel groups who either were contemplating or who had already expanded internationally. It is evident that hotel companies have a preference to non-equity based expansion either through management contracts or joint ventures. In addition, expansion into emerging markets required a different approach to that of developed markets and a unique understanding of the government and cultural influences of the host country was required.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how networking is influenced by the choice of internationalization strategy of software firms with a born global mindset. To achieve this purpose, the following research questions were answered: How applicable is previous research on traditional internationalization strategies to born global software firms? How does networking vary between the different choices of internationalization strategy for born global software firms? Method – The research philosophy of this thesis was interpretivistic, supported by an abductive qualitative multi-method approach of exploratory character. Additionally, the data collection methods were literature studies, interviews and documentation conducted from six case companies. The collected data form the base of the developed networking and internationalization model which serves to support the general understanding of how born global software firms can internationalize and use networks to benefit their operations. Findings – By forming clusters and looking into how networking varies between the different choices of internationalization strategy, several types of internationalization strategies of born global software firms were identified, these being referred to as Nascent Global, Cautiously Global, Regionally Global and Instantly Global. Additionally, the results show that it is the choice of internationalization strategy that influences the choice of the networking activity. Nascent Global firms are firms who has not yet launched their service or decided upon internationalization strategy, they mostly network in order to strategize and plan; Cautiously Global firms operates nationally or have recently internationalized into another country, for them the networking focus lies on the process of learning to minimize the risk of mistakes or failure; Regionally Global firms are internationalizing incrementally with a regional focus and networking to access sources of knowledge; Instantly Global firms are those who are global right from inception where the focus is targeted at growth opportunities. Moreover, the findings show that Instantly Global firms are the ones that truly contradict traditional theory on internationalization strategies. Research limitations – The first limitation of this study is that we have solely focused on networking from the firm’s perspective and have not gone into the actual external network of each firm. Additionally, it would be appropriate to include a larger amount of case companies, in order to increase the level of generalizability. Nevertheless, due to limitations concerning the scale of work and time-constraints, six case companies were included. Further research – If practitioners would conduct a similar investigation of born global software firms, it would be interesting to conduct a quantitative study, analyzing potential linkages between the use of networks and internationalization. Also, since this study was cross-sectional, opportunities exist of conducting a longitudinal study, looking into how born global software firms change over time.

A lot of research has been done concerning the internationalization process of companies. However, researchers have identified a new type of firm that is leapfrogging and is operating internationally right after inception. These companies are Born Globals. We are interested in this trend and the purpose of this research is to understand the strategic behaviour of Born Globals. Therefore, we have done qualitative research on these companies and we will focus on their pre-internationalization steps, their key drivers and their relation to the home market. We have found three case companies, who have helped us in our understandings and we have made several conclusions, regarding their strategic behaviour.

Mike Sutherlin, CEO of Joy Global Inc. (“JOY”), a global mining equipment manufacturer, was having lunch, in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his wife, in November of 2010 when his cell phone began ringing. He hesitated answering, but recognizing the name, picked up to hear surprising news. It was a courtesy call from a friend at Caterpillar Inc. (“CAT”), the $85 Billion USD juggernaut, letting him know that CAT had just purchased JOY’s cross town rival, Bucyrus International, Inc. (“BI”), for $8.8B USD. JOY and BI were 2 Milwaukee, Wisconsin based mining equipment manufacturers who competed head to head on a worldwide stage. Evenly matched, with a market cap around $7B USD each, these two companies had spared in the surface and underground mining equipment market for heavy duty extraction mining equipment for over a hundred years since their founding in 1888 and 1889, respectively. All of a sudden, with this acquisition, what had always been a cross town rivalry would take on new proportions. CAT was the undisputed world wide heavy machinery giant with a market cap 10 times the size of JOY. Regarding the acquisition, Sutherlin comments, “Instead of a smaller competition across town all of a sudden this changed the world for us.” CAT brought to the table revenues which were 12 times larger than JOY, a global brand that stood for reliable heavy machinery, exceptional service through its army of worldwide distributors, and the ability to win deals by financing equipment through CAT financial. Sutherlin´s team had just put the finishing touches on their strategic plan for 2010. The exercise had reaffirmed some of JOY´s strategies, such as a continued commitment to focus solely in the mining equipment industry (versus including construction and farming equipment markets like CAT), a direct sales and service go to market model (versus third party distributors like CAT), and a focus on premium products with premium pricing (versus wining deals on price like BI). The plan also called for some changes such as moving beyond the dependence on a single product for their surface mining division and a move beyond coal specific products for its underground division. Would this strategy need to be revised? Would the plan withstand this new challenge? Sutherlin knew it was time to get his leadership team together, circle the wagons, and figure out, what, if anything, JOY could do to respond to this new competitive threat from CAT.

Abstract:
Global logistics companies are increasingly disclosing carbon related information due to institutional and stakeholder pressures. Existing research, however, is limited to categorizing these pressures and their influences on corporate carbon disclosure strategies. In particular, literature to date has not distinguished between different carbon disclosure strategies and how they may have changed over time. In response, this paper: (1) proposes a framework that depicts four different carbon disclosure responses and strategies based on internal and external pressures; and (2) subsequently analyzes and compares corporate carbon disclosure strategies between 2010 and 2015. Using a sample of 39 leading global logistics companies, carbon disclosure strategies are categorized based on the analysis of 25 applied carbon management practices from Bloomberg ESG to see if carbon management practices and the associated strategies have changed. The findings show overall shifts to more transparent corporate carbon disclosure strategies between 2010 and 2015 with an increase of applied carbon management practices in both internal and external actions.

Abstract:
Globalization provides several opportunities to companies, including access to multiple markets, new revenues, knowledge and technologies, that increases their competitivity. On the other hand, it generates a series of threats within an environment of worldwide growing instability, originated from social and geopolitical conflicts, together with financial and economical risks. Moreover, the solidification of an unstable global economical system is at the heart of such conflicts and risks. Such aspects of the Globalization process, both the positive and negative ones, may cause aggressive disturbances and oscillations in the markets creating challenges to the global corporate strategic management. The modern approaches to managerial globalization process take into account both these aspects, opportunities and threats, however in an unordered way. In this work we present a qualitative analysis of the main approaches to global companies, aiming to pinpoint the challenges of corporate management of companies under globalization. Moreover, we demonstrate that a search for alternatives to a company's survival and domestic independence requires a change of perspective regarding their administrative functions and the formulation and implementation of their strategies, in order to define the necessary infrastructure to allow its business growth. It is also shown that a search for new markets requires several dynamic abilities but also a systematic method to manage internal and external challenges.

The business competition in the software industry is increasingly becoming a global competition. In this era with a fast-paced innovative environment, strategy plays an important role for managers in software companies in defining its own globalization approach. This thesis discusses the competitive dynamics of a wide variety of product segments in the software industry - IT services, packaged software, Internet services and e-commerce - to illustrate the different nature of the business in the software industry, especially with the focus on globalization. The work first discusses the current global competition in the software industry. The analyses cover the competitive landscape in certain product segments as well as in certain regions. Second, a Global Winner-Takes-All-or-Most framework is introduced to simplify the thought process in determining which business a firm is competing in, what are the implications of global competition and what a firm should think through when it considers international expansion to another country or region. Third, a DAC framework (local demand, accessibility and complementarity) is also introduced to simplify the thought process in determining which countries or regions a firm should focus its resources on, along with the implications of competition and what a firm should think through. Next, three aspects of execution implications - new market expansion, organizational design and leadership - are discussed. These frameworks and findings are backed up with sketches of global software firms to highlight the best practices in the software industry in terms of globalization, with an emphasis on software firms. Finally, a summary of the findings from this research and recommendations are provided for software firms headed for globalization.
