Abstract:
ObjectivePrompted by the unexpected finding of gadolinium leakage into ocular structures (GLOS) in acute stroke patients, we studied the frequency and nature of this finding in 167 patients.MethodsPatients were selected who had an MRI with gadolinium at baseline and another MRI with fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging at 2 and/or 24 hours later. GLOS was detected as lack of vitreous and/or aqueous fluid suppression on postcontrast FLAIR images.ResultsGLOS, evident on postcontrast FLAIR MRI, occurred in 127/167 (76%) patients: 86/109 (79%) patients treated with tissue plasminogen activator and 41/58 (71%) who were untreated. At 2 hours after administration of the contrast, GLOS was more common in the aqueous chamber alone, occurring in 67% of patients, compared to the vitreous chamber alone, seen in 6% of patients; it occurred in both chambers in 27% of patients. At 24 hours, GLOS was present in 121/162 (75%) patients, always involving the vitreous chamber, but also affecting the aqueous chamber in 6% of cases. Vitreous GLOS at 24 hours was associated with increasing age (p = 0.002) and a higher burden of cerebral white matter hyperintensities (p = 0.017). Patients with rapid diffuse GLOS, defined as GLOS involving both chambers at 2 hours, had larger infarcts (p = 0.022) and a higher degree of blood-brain barrier permeability (p = 0.025).ConclusionsWe found GLOS to be common in patients with acute stroke; delayed GLOS was a marker for chronic vascular disease. The mechanism for acute GLOS remains uncertain but may be a remote effect of acute cerebral injury on the blood-ocular barrier.

Abstract:
A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of spiral-shaped bacteria in animals as a possible source of pathogens causing chronic changes in the human and animal stomach as well as in other parts of the digestive tract. This study was carried out in three different groups of animals, pigs, cattle and dogs. Swabs from the oral cavity of dogs (<I>n</I> = 198) were stained using Gram’s method to evaluate gastrospirillum-like organisms (GLOs) and revealed two different types of GLOs with an incidence of 23.2% (46/198). The stomachs of the pigs (<I>n</I> = 104), cattle (<I>n</I> = 102), and dogs (<I>n</I> = 7) were collected for the urease test, brush cytology, light and electron microscopy, and PCR. A positive urease test was observed in 31.7% (33/104) of pigs, 90.2% (92/102) of cattle, and 85.7% (6/7) of dog samples. GLOs were detected in 37.5% (39/104) of pigs, 62.7% (64/102) of cattle, and 85.7% (6/7) of dog samples by brush cytology. Furthermore, positive PCR results were obtained in the stomach samples of dogs that had tested positive by both the urease test and brush cytology. The morphological study using brush cytology and scanning electron microscopy of a pig stomach revealed bacteria with the typical morphology of GLOs, which appeared to be similar to <I>Helicobacter heilmanii</I>. This study indicates that the urease test and brush cytology are useful tools for diagnosing GLOs in different animals. Moreover, the location of specimen collection can influence the diagnostic sensitivity of the examination.

AbstractThe Laurentian Great Lakes is the world’s largest freshwater ecosystem. A charge of the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS) Regional Association is to help coordinate and integrate data and information relative to the needs of multiple user communities—decision makers with responsibility for coastal resources, maritime operations, human health and water security data, and issues associated with adapting to climate change and weather-related hazards. This article outlines the process GLOS has developed for determining regional data and information needs, how GLOS outreach activities inform data management functions and the development of decision support tools, and how the nearshore network of multiple observation platform types was conceived and is being implemented. The article finishes with a case study of this approach as it is being applied to source water protection, spill response, and search and rescue in the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, and Detroit River, the connecting channels that link Lake Huron to Lake Erie.

Abstract:
Background: Global learning outcomes (GLOs) are increasingly emphasized within higher education because of the advantages they provide in navigating globalized contexts. The process of global learning may be understood through Mezirow’s theory of transformational learning, in which presentation of dissonant information results in more open, inclusive frames of reference. Purpose: We propose that local community-based experiential learning may facilitate development of GLOs through a process of transformational learning. Methodology/Approach: We used consensual qualitative research-modified (CQR-M) method to describe outcomes of a service-based experiential learning opportunity called Community Kitchen. Findings/Conclusions: Our analyses yielded seven domains within participant responses, many of which align with GLOs: impacting knowledge and skills, changing attitudes through transformational learning, contributing to personal benefit, facilitating relational connections, influencing vocational identity, engaging with the community, and providing a unique experience. Implications: Experiential learning may be a viable avenue through which global learning occurs locally through service-learning experiences.

Abstract:
Health is a critical condition for living things, even before the technology exists. Nowadays the healthcare domain provides a lot of scope for research as it has extremely evolved. The most researched areas of health sectors include diabetes mellitus (DM), breast cancer, brain tumor, etc. DM is a severe chronic disease that affects human health and has a high rate throughout the world. Early prediction of DM is important to reduce its risk and even avoid it. In this study, we propose a DM prediction model based on global and local learner algorithms. The proposed global and local learners stacking (GLLS) model; combines the prediction algorithms from two largely different but complementary machine learning paradigms, specifically XGBoost and NB from global learning whereas kNN and SVM (with RBF kernel) from local learning and aggregates them by stacking ensemble technique using LR as meta-learner. The effectiveness of the GLLS model was proved by comparing several performance measures and the results of different contrast experiments. The evaluation results on UCI Pima Indian diabetes data-set (PIDD) indicates the model has achieved the better prediction performance of 99.5%, 99.5%, 99.5%, 99.1%, and 100% in terms of accuracy, AUC, F1 score, sensitivity, and specificity respectively, compared to other research results mentioned in the literature. Moreover, to better validate the GLLS model performance, three additional medical data sets; Messidor, WBC, ILPD, are considered and the model also achieved an accuracy of 82.1%, 98.6%, and 89.3% respectively. Experimental results proved the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed GLLS model.

Abstract:
There is a substantial amount of research in the fields of language-learning strategies and good language learners (GLLs); however, few studies have investigated vocabulary-learning strategies’ use among successful learners. Thus, this paper aims to explore the vocabulary-learning strategies employed by GLLs. To fulfill this aim, a case study was conducted. The participant was a 21-year-old student who passed the standardized test of English proficiency with a high score. This study implemented three instruments, as follows: (1) a vocabulary size test to identify the vocabulary difficulty level, (2) vocabulary knowledge scale test, and (3) think-aloud protocol. In addition, the data collected were analyzed thematically. The findings showed that the participant exhibited two types of strategies. First, he used metacognitive strategies, including monitoring and planning; second, he employed cognitive strategies, which comprised retrieval, avoidance, making associations, and verification. The results indicated that there is a set of language-learning and vocabulary-learning strategies that GLLs tend to use. Moreover, these strategies incorporate but are not limited to cognitive and metacognitive skills. Given these results, this paper clarifies that the vocabulary-learning strategies a GLL displays can be used to help low-level students and learners in general further their learning.

Abstract:
The graphical analysis method, which transforms multiple time measurements of plasma and tissue uptake data into a linear plot, is a useful tool for rapidly obtaining information about the binding of radioligands used in PET studies. The strength of the method is that it does not require a particular model structure. However, a bias is introduced in the case of noisy data resulting in the underestimation of the distribution volume (DV), the slope obtained from the graphical method. To remove the bias, a modification of the method developed by Feng et al. (1993) , the generalized linear least squares (GLLS) method, which provides unbiased estimates for compartment models was used. The one compartment GLLS method has a relatively simple form, which was used to estimate the DV directly and as a smoothing technique for more general classes of model structures. In the latter case, the GLLS method was applied to the data in two parts, that is, one set of parameters was determined for times 0 to T1 and a second set from T1 to the end time. The curve generated from these two sets of parameters then was used as input to the graphical method. This has been tested using simulations of data similar to that of the PET ligand [11C]- d-threo-methylphenidate (MP, DV = 35 mL/mL) and 11C raclopride (RAC, DV = 1.92 mL/mL) and compared with two examples from image data with the same tracers. The noise model was based on counting statistics through the half-life of the isotope and the scanning time. Five hundred data sets at each noise level were analyzed. Results (DV) for the graphical analysis (DVg), the nonlinear least squares (NLS) method (DVnls), the one-tissue compartment GLLS method (DVf), and the two part GLLS followed by graphical analysis (DVfg) were compared. DVFG was found to increase somewhat with increasing noise and in some data sets at high noise levels no estimate could be obtained. However, at intermediate levels it provided a good estimation of the true DV. This method was extended to use a reference tissue in place of the input function to generate the distribution volume ratio (DVR) to the reference region. A linearized form of the simplified reference tissue method of Lammertsma and Hume (1996) was used. The DVR generated directly from the model (DVRfl) was compared with DVRfg (determined from a “smoothed” uptake curve as for DVfg) using the graphical method.

Abstract:
Participants will discuss the integration of global learning into the curricula and examine comprehensive frameworks for global learning. This session will engage participants in designing curriculum/assessment tools and developing partnership strategies that advance an intentional approach to global learning throughout the undergraduate experience. Using the AAC&U Global VALUE rubric, which shows how course specific global learning outcomes (GLOs) align with dimensions of student development, we will cross-reference the rubric to instructional strategies that optimize the achievement of the GLOs; drilling down further, we show how examples of how these GLOs align with appropriate learning activities, assessments, and related learning technologies. Following this basic template, we lead participants working in pairs through an analysis of their syllabi and through a series of structured exercises (worksheets and small group interaction) to co-develop a course learning module or collaborative assignment segment that integrates at least one global learning outcome. The goals of this session are compatible with Mason's Collaborative Global Classrooms (CGC) Initiative, where faculty are funded to partner with one or more international peer faculty who together transform and then co-teach an existing course or course component into a CGC course. The signature learning experience of a CGC involves high levels of student collaborative engagement with international peers and intercultural skills development in a co-taught learning environment.

Abstract:
Abstract Graham Little-Lassueur Syndrome (GLLS) is considered a form of lichen planopilaris which associates follicular lichen planus, cicatricial alopecia of the scalp and noncicatricial alopecia of the axillary and/or pubic regions. We present the case of a 47 years old female patient, known for 5 years with chronic hepatitis C and a poor therapeutic control of the disease due to Interferon intolerance. She presented to our clinic for the occurrence on the shins of some well-defined, intensely pruritic erythematous plaques, covered with thick scales, with a verrucous appearance, accompanied by excoriations. The skin biopsy reveal hypertrophic lichen planus on the shins and lichen planopilaris on the scalp. The patient was treated with systemic antihystamines, topical corticosteroids and salicylic acid under occlusion, emollients, phototherapy UVB narrow band 4 sessions/week for 3 weeks, cryotherapy. From our knowledge this is the first case of GLLS associated with chronic viral hepatis C.

Abstract:
In tertiary education, generic professional skills should be developed along with discipline-specific knowledge and skills. Team-Based Learning (TBL), an active learning strategy, creates deep learning and enhanced student engagement; however, its effects on the development of generic learning outcomes are unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate postgraduate specialty nursing students’ perspectives of how TBL impacts the acquisition of skills defined by the university’s eight Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLOs). A descriptive exploratory design was used in this study. Postgraduate nursing students in 2016-2017 at one university were invited to participate. Data were collected via demographic survey, a ranking tool, and written reflections. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The response rate was 97.2 per cent (172/177). Participants were mostly females (n=152, 88.4%) aged 25–34 years (n=115, 66.9%). Student (n=156) rankings showed TBL contributed to the acquisition of critical thinking (n=90, 57.7%) and problem solving skills (n=56, 35.9%) the most. Students (n=144) made 2719 comments regarding how TBL led to the acquisition of GLOs in written reflections. Almost 98 per cent (n=2657) of all reflective comments were positive. All students mentioned at least one GLO positively due to TBL. Most positive reflections related to self-management (n=520, 19.6%) and communication (n=434, 16.3%).Postgraduate specialty nursing students perceived TBL classes contributed to the acquisition of their university’s GLOs, particularly critical thinking, problem solving, and self-management skills. The active learning strategy of TBL facilitates learning and engagement, and the attainment of essential professional attributes which are highly valued by employers.

Abstract:
Over the recent decades, there has been a growing research interest in placing learners at the heart of any enterprise pertaining to foreign language learning and teaching. Alongside the growth of new perspectives and theories in cognitive psychology and foreign language learning and teaching, research has shifted its focus from the teacher and learning outcomes to the learners and the learning processes. Correspondingly, researchers emphasize the significance of making the learning and teaching paradigms more supportive and responsive to learners’ needs and interests to fully play more active and participatory roles. Drawing on researchers’ contributions in the area of good language learner studies, this paper sets out to examine the relationship between the characteristics of GLLs and language achievement. For this purpose, a sample of (N = 98) senior Moroccan high school students took an EFL achievement test and responded to the GLL questionnaire as designed and developed by Constantinides (2013). Using a Spearman correlational coefficient test and regression analysis, results show that GLLs’ scores significantly correlate (r = .81) and reliably predict the respondents’ achievement test scores. The paper ends with a conclusion and some pedagogical implications to promote EFL learning and teaching.

Abstract:
In this article, we study the optical force exerted on nanorods. In recent years, the capture of micro-nanoparticles has been a frontier topic in optics. A Photonic Jet (PJ) is an emerging subwavelength beam with excellent application prospects. This paper studies the optical force exerted by photonic jets generated by a plane wave illuminating a Generalized Luneburg Lens (GLLs) on nanorods. In the framework of the dipole approximation, the optical force on the nanorods is studied. The electric field of the photonic jet is calculated by the open-source software package DDSCAT developed based on the Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA). In this paper, the effects of the nanorods’ orientation and dielectric constant on the transverse force Fx and longitudinal force Fy are analyzed. Numerical results show that the maximum value of the positive force and the negative force are equal and appear alternately at the position of the photonic jet. Therefore, to capture anisotropic nanoscale-geometries (nanorods), it is necessary to adjust the position of GLLs continuously. It is worth emphasizing that manipulations with nanorods will make it possible to create new materials at the nanoscale.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Rett syndrome (RTT) is a human neurodevelopmental disorder, whose pathogenesis has been linked to both oxidative stress and subclinical inflammatory status (OxInflammation). Methylglyoxal (MG), a glycolytic by-product with cytotoxic and pro-oxidant power, is the major precursor in vivo of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are known to exert their detrimental effect via receptor- (e.g., RAGE) or non-receptor-mediated mechanisms in several neurological diseases. On this basis, we aimed to compare fibroblasts from healthy subjects (CTR) with fibroblasts from RTT patients (N = 6 per group), by evaluating gene/protein expression patterns, and enzymatic activities of glyoxalases (GLOs), along with the levels of MG-dependent damage in both basal and MG-challenged conditions. Our results revealed that RTT is linked to an alteration of the GLOs system (specifically, increased GLO2 activity), that ensures unchanged MG-dependent damage levels. However, RTT cells underwent more pronounced cell death upon exogenous MG-treatment, as compared to CTR, and displayed lower RAGE levels than CTR, with no alterations following MG-treatment, thus suggesting that an adaptive response to dicarbonyl stress may occur. In conclusion, besides OxInflammation, RTT is associated with reshaping of the major defense systems against dicarbonyl stress, along with an altered cellular stress response towards pro-glycating insults.

AbstractIndonesian, Kelantan Malay, Patani Malay, and Sundanese are kin languages. The four languages include the Austronesian language family. The first three languages, namely Indonesian, Kelantan Malay, and Patani Malay belong to the Malay language group, while Sundanese does not include Malay. Indonesian and Sundanese are found in Indonesia. Kelantan Malay is found in Malaysia. Patani Malay is found in Thailand. As the languages of relatives of Austronesian families, all four languages have vocabulary inherited from older languages. The characteristics of inheritance can be observed in vocabulary that has similarities or similarities in form and meaning. The problem discussed is the phonemic correspondence of what shows the difference in relative words obtained from the results of comparing relative words in the six glossos of the four sample languages studied. In this paper six Indonesian sample words are taken as glossos from 200 basic Swadesh vocabulary words, namely erase, heart, life, green, black, and rain. Data sourced from dictionaries and informants. From the results of research on the word relatives for the six glossos obtained nine phonemic correspondence sets, namely (a) / h ~ ø /, (b) / s ~ h /, (c) / i ~ ɛ /, (d) / d ~ r /, (e) / p ~ k /, (f) / aw ~ a ~ ɔ /, (g) / am ~ őŋ ~ ɛ /, and (h) / -an ~ --ɛ /. Furthermore, each phonemic correspondence results in a grouping of languages that shows the owner of the language elements contained in the phonemic correspondence and if a reconstruction is made, the grouping of languages shows the branching of older languages which has derived it.Keywords: language family, word relatives, phonemic correspondence, inheritance

Abstract:
The construction of parametric positron emission tomography images of enzyme or receptor concentration obtained using irreversibly binding radiotracers presents problems not usually encountered with reversibly binding radiotracers. Difficulties are most apparent in brain regions having low blood flow and/or high enzyme or receptor concentration and are exacerbated with noisy data. This is especially true when minimal doses of radiotracer are administered. A comparison was recently reported of the irreversible monoamine oxidase A (MAO A) radiotracers [11C]clorgyline (CLG) and deuterium-substituted [11C]clorgyline (CLG-D) in the human brain using region of interest (ROI) analysis in which the authors observed an unexpected loss of image contrast with CLG-D compared with CLG. In order to more fully investigate patterns of binding of these irreversibly binding radiotracers, a strategy was devised to reduce noise in the generation of parametric images of the model term related to enzyme or receptor concentration. The generalized linear least squares (GLLS) method of Feng et al. (1995) , a rapid linear method that is unbiased, was used for image-wide parameter estimation. Since GLLS can fail in the presence of large amounts of noise, local voxels were grouped within the image to increase the signal, and the GLLS method was combined with the standard nonlinear estimation methods when necessary. Voxels were grouped together depending on their proximity and whether they fell within a specified range of the time-integrated image. It was assumed that voxels meeting both criteria are functionally related. Simulations reflecting varying enzyme concentrations were performed to assess precision and accuracy of parameter estimates in the presence of varying amounts of noise. Using this approach, images were generated of the combination parameter λ k3 (λ = K1/ k2, where K1 and k2 are plasma-to-tissue and tissue-to-plasma transport constants, respectively) that is related to enzyme concentration as well as images of the transport constant K1 for individual subjects. Reasonably high-quality images of both K1 and λ k3 were obtained for CLG and CLG-D for individual subjects even with low injected doses averaging 6 mCi. While there were no differences in the K1 images, the λ k3 images revealed the loss of contrast previously reported for CLG-D using the ROI analysis. This method should be generalizable to other tracers and should facilitate the analysis of group differences.

Abstract:
The paper addresses problematic issues within linguistic borrowing terminology, which is often used inconsistently in language contact studies, and though abundant, it appears insufficient, as the latest research shows. The challenges a present-day language contact researcher faces are related to terminological imprecision, ambiguity, and the overlapping and overlaying of loan terms exploited in the description of language contact outcomes. Terminological discrepancies are multifactorial and have been caused, among others, by multilingualism of research, lack of terminological equivalence both within monolingual and multilingual settings, and the multiplicity of conceptual frameworks and research methods. Yet, despite loan terminology richness, some of the newly-appearing loan developments, induced by intensive language contact and speakers’ creativity, cannot be squeezed into the available typologies. An illustration of the abundance, conflict and insufficiency in loan terminology is based on European, American and Asian studies on linguistic borrowing published over the last century.

Abstract:
Several frog species descriptions from this century provide larval morphology, acoustical, molecular, ecological and behavioral information that, together, provide a better species characterization (e.g., Glos et al. 2005; Toledo et al. 2010; Vassilieva et al. 2016). For the majority of anuran species, basic information is still lacking, despite being fundamental to understand the evolution of a taxonomic unit as well as phylogenetic relationships established between taxa. Such information can be particularly useful for species groups with unresolved taxonomic issues, such as the Dendropsophus marmoratus group (Bokermann 1964; Heyer 1977; Caramaschi & Jim 1983; Gomes & Peixoto 1996).

Abstract:
Abstract The Gliwice Luminescence Laboratory (GLL) is a part of the Institute of Physics – Centre for Science and Education at the Silesian University of Technology, which has gradually evolved since the 1980s. To date, nearly 3500 samples have been dated using luminescence from materials such as ceramics, bricks, and sediments from archaeological and geological sites. Currently, the laboratory is equipped with four luminescence readers and three gamma spectrometers, allowing luminescence dating of approximately 300 samples annually for the needs of research projects. This article focuses on the laboratory procedures used in GLL to obtain luminescence ages. Recent improvements of the GLL's facilities and new equipment, as well as the performance spanning the Laboratory's 30 years of activity, are discussed in terms of obtained results and the involvement in national and international projects.

Abstract:
Abstract Among the muniments of Westminster Abbey is a hitherto unpublished poll tax return of 1377 from the manor of Brockworth (Glos.), which belonged to Llanthony Priory. The return is of singular interest in recording details of the names and destinations of emigrants from the village in the months before the levying of the tax. A high level of migration is revealed. Generally, the migrants went to local villages and towns. A significant minority, however, left for destinations further afield, chiefly in the Severn valley and Welsh Marches. The evidence of the return is a powerful reminder of the importance of migration as a regulatory mechanism in the English rural economy.

Abstract:
Vokal pada suku kata pertama adalah [a],[ә ], [u], [o], dan [i], sedangkan pada suku kedua adalah [a]; [o], [e]; [ә ], [], [iya], [i], [u], dan [uwa].

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough historians have long recognized the importance of long-range scientific expeditions in both the practice and culture of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century science, it is less well understood how this form of scientific organization emerged and became established in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. In the late seventeenth century new European scientific institutions tried to make use of globalized trade networks for their own ends, but to do so proved difficult. This paper offers a case history of one such expedition, the voyage sponsored by the French Académie royale des sciences to Gorée (in modern Senegal) and the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in 1681–3. The voyage of Varin, Deshayes and de Glos reveals how the process of travel itself caused problems for instruments and observers alike.

Abstract:
The social organization of prehistoric British societies has been a busy interest recently, with the hypothesis that the Neolithic was characterized by lineage societies, very likely egalitarian in character, whose dead were placed into communal ‘tombs for the ancestors’. But how secure is the evidence for burial in chambered or unchambered long barrows over many generations? Hazleton provides the key example, for it is the first neolithic burial-site to benefit from the full resources of AMS dating and the new calibration.
