ABSTRACTLarge area lighting OLEDs manufactured in a Roll-to-Roll (R2R) fashion enable the well-longed production capability with considerably high throughput based on flexible substrates, hence largely reduced OLED manufacturing cost. This paper will outline the present status of R2R OLED fabrication on ultra-thin glass with the focus on transparent OLED devices and how to perform segmentation by printing of silver- and dielectric pastes. Ultra-thin glass (UTG) is laminated on a PET film to avoid fabrication interruptions when glass cracks occur during the Roll-to-Roll process. The R2R fabricated flexible OLEDs also show key-values comparable to conventional OLEDs fabricated on small rigid glass in lab-scale.

Abstract:
This work reports some experimental results regarding to a Li2O-ZrO2-SiO2-Al2O3 (LZSA) sintered glass-ceramic material obtained by roll pressing of glass powders (mean particle size ≈ 5 μm) with an added (7 wt.%) inorganic material (bentonite) as binder. The composition was characterized using chemical analysis, laser-scattering particle size analysis, DTA, XRD, thermal expansion, modulus of rupture (MOR) and deep abrasion (DA) measurements as well as density measurements and SEM observations. From the results it was verified that the glass-ceramic materials obtained by sintering and controlled crystallization, in the 850-1030°C temperature range, of glass powders, have properties and characteristics decisively better than those of other traditionally used materials. It is concluded that roll pressing technology is a potential candidate to produce sintered glassceramics for many applications, such as, for example, large sheets panels for electrical and thermal insulation.

Abstract:
The goal of the present study is to fabricate the short fiber-reinforced metal matrix composites by accumulative roll bonding. Various mixtures of fibers including 100 glass, 95 glass/5 carbon and 80 glass/20 carbon (all in wt.%) were used as the reinforcement. In order to investigate the bonding quality at layer interface, the composites with various fiber mixtures were produced by cold roll bonding. The bonding strength of the composites under different processing conditions including the fiber mixture, reduction in thickness and post-rolling annealing was measured by the peeling test. The 95 glass/5 carbon mixture was used to fabricate the fiber-reinforced composite through accumulative roll bonding. The fiber distribution, tensile properties and wear behavior of the composite were investigated at various numbers of accumulative roll bonding cycle. It was found that during accumulative roll bonding, the fiber clusters were broken and fragmented into smaller pieces. Results showed that the tensile strength and wear resistance of the composite enhanced with increasing the number of accumulative roll bonding cycles.

Abstract:
The influence of different cutting parameters on the glass edge quality was investigated, including the cutter material, the sharpening angle of the cutting roll, the cutting speed and the load applied to the roll. The results show that there are less defects on the edge of the glass cut by diamond cutter. There is no obvious influence of cutting speed on the glass edge quality. The cutter with a smaller sharpening angle is more applicable for the cutting of thin glass, and the thick glass is more suitable to use a bigger sharpening angle cutter. Higher cutting load is helpful for the breaking of the glass along the cutting line. However, it may cause more defects on the edge and the surface of the glass.

Alkali-free flat panel display glass is produced in large quantity and has excellent electrical insulating properties at high temperature. Aluminum borosilicate glass with alkaline-earth modifier has low sodium content and low dielectric loss (tan δ <0.1 at 250°C), high dielectric breakdown strength (109 V/m) and excellent high temperature stability. In addition, roll-to-roll processing of thin glass sheet has been demonstrated and glass capacitors that are configured in a coil. Excellent high power capability of these glasses was confirmed by analytical, finite element, and finite difference modeling. The modeling work indicates that a combination of hybrid electrode design and effective heat loss at the interface can further extend power capability of glass capacitors. Alkali-free glass is an ideal candidate material for high temperature capacitors.

Solidification behavior of two Fe-base amorphous alloys during twin-roll strip casting has been investigated in the present study. Continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams of both alloys were calculated using the heterogeneous nucleation theory coupled with thermal data obtained during cooling. Cooling sequence during twin-roll strip casting was also simulated. These were used for the determination of the optimum twin-roll strip casting conditions at which desirable solidification behavior could be achieved. It shows that twin-roll strip casting can continuously fabricate sheet product of Fe-base bulk amorphous alloys, despite their higher liquidus temperatures and larger differences between liquidus and glass transition temperatures (Tg) than those of other easier glass-forming bulk amorphous alloys.

This article discusses the formation of residual stresses during the assembly of automotive glass. The influence of various parameters of the adhesive bead on the spatial deviations of glasses during their installation is shown. Currently, the glass assembly technology involves filling the gap between the automotive glass and the car body with a glue roller. It has been established that the formation of residual stresses is influenced by the width and thickness of the glue roll, with a minimum width of the glue roll during drying, a discontinuity of the glue joint along the contour is possible, and with a maximum width, unacceptable residual deformations occur in the glass, which lead to cracks.

For the next generation of handling systems, reversible adhesion enabled by micropatterned dry adhesives exhibits high potential. The versatility of polymeric micropatterns in handling objects made from various materials has been demonstrated by several groups. However, specimens reported in most studies have been restricted to the laboratory scale. Upscaling the size and quantity of micropatterned adhesives is the next step to enable successful technology transfer. Towards this aim, we introduce a continuous roll-to-roll replication process for fabrication of high-performance, mushroom-shaped micropatterned dry adhesives. The micropatterns were made from UV-curable polyurethane acrylates. To ensure the integrity of the complex structure during the fabrication process, flexible templates were used. The compression between the template and the wet prepolymer coating was investigated to optimize replication results without structural failures, and hence, to improve adhesion. As a result, we obtained micropatterned adhesive tapes, 10 cm in width and several meters in length, with adhesion strength about 250 kPa to glass, suitable for a wide range of applications.

Strengthening of glass sheets through the process of ion exchange have been widely used in thinner cover glass for smart phone. The compressive stress improves the ability of the glass surface to withstand damage from mechanical impact. However, the presence of the damage resistant layer makes conventional mechanical and laser cutting of the ion-exchanged glass difficult. Normally, the cutting process will lead to spontaneous glass sheet breakage or shattering. Even successful in some samples, the underlying central tension is exposed on the edge, and the mechanical strength and durability of this edge is degraded. The repair of edge cracks becomes an extremely important issue for the development of single glass based smart phone. The ion exchanged glass plates (Corning IOX-FS) with a thickness of 0.7 mm were selected as the substrate materials. After cutting ion exchanged glass by high penetration diamond scribing wheels, the edge of glass plates can be protected or strengthened with silica sol using roll coating process. It was observed that the strength could be improved achieving 210 % compared to the strength of uncoated glass sheets. The sol-gel coating could improve the strength of the glass mainly by the mechanisms of filling in edge flaws or blunting crack tips. The effects of silica sol and processing parameters of roll coating process on the cracks filling effects were investigated.

Hydrophobic surfaces are eyed for their self-cleaning ability because water droplets can roll on them (instead of clinging), thus the surface have capability to remove dirt. Hydrophobic surfaces were created by coating functionalized Titanium Dioxide-based paint. The paint was fabricated by reacting fluorosilane molecules in ethanol with titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Ethanol also serves as the volatile suspension medium that evaporates when the paint is coated on surfaces. The paint was coated on different surfaces by simple dipping. Contact angle of coated aluminum sheet, soda-lime glass, filter paper and silicon carbide polishing paper showed hydrophobicity. Water droplets are made to roll on coated soda-lime glass at angle of 0.057°. The ability of water droplets to roll highlights the coated surface self-cleaning potential.

The analysis of glass assembly technology and impact of different factors upon strength and accuracy of glass positioning is presented. The modeling of residual stresses after manufacturing as a result of technological impact has shown the presence of residual stresses of stretching along the edges. To the stresses there are summed up assembly stresses caused by shrinkage processes in the glue joint. It is defined that at the minimum width of the glue roll during dry-out a discontinuity of the glue joint along the contour is possible and at the maximum layer width the additional technological stresses in glass arise.

This report describes problems commonly encountered in cryosectioning of fragile tissues, such as jamming and scrambling of sections between knife and anti-roll plate. The electrostatic nature of the factors causing these derangements is demonstrated here using simple methods, and several modifications to the anti-roll plate surface are tested for their help in obviating these difficulties. The anti-roll plate material found to be most effective consists of a metal oxide-coated glass which is commercially available at low cost.

The paper presents a brief history of roll-on/roll-off ferries'and their problems, together with a novel design based on a perforated vehicle deck. Two I/woth scale models of the Herald of Free Enterprise were manufactured in glass reinforced plastic. These two models were tested dynamically in a tank, and the results showed that the modified novel design was considerably superior to the conventional design. The novel design does not affect the roll on/roll off concept of the ro-ro ferry. Additionally, it should be possible to retrofit it into existing vessels and thus meet SOLAS requirements.

As a former user of glass plates for microscopy, radiography, autoradiographyandspectroscopy, I sympathize with Kent. Today there are substitute sheet and or roll films for most of the glass plate applications. For example, [ have found Kodak's "Trnax" films as sensitive as lantern plates for soft X-rays and nearly as good for resolution. Tmax is also a good general purpose emulsion for the laboratory, with the possibility of reversal development for slides and availability in a range of formats including 120 and four by five. Perhaps we should recognize the passing of the glass plate as part of current times and inscribe "RIP" over our hallowed collection of glass negatives. After all, many predict that electronic photography will eventually replace all forms of chemical photography.

Demand for diminishing edge roll off of workpiece has rapidly increased, especially in polishing silicon wafers and glass disks. However, the conventional polishing technologies cannot meet the demand. To address this problem, the influence of carrier film properties and that of polishing pad properties on the stress distribution near the workpiece edge were investigated using finite element methods. Based on the analytical results, double-layered polishing pads having an extra-fine fiber thin layer and a hard polymer layer were developed. Polishing experiments on silicon wafers and glass plates showed that the developed polishing pads achieved high finishing efficiency and extremely flat surface near the edge.

Glass wool is the roll felt product produced by melting and fiberizing glass and then adding adhesive for curing processing. It is well-shaped, thermally insulated and corrosion resistant and has low volume density, low thermal conductivity, good acoustic absorptivity and stable chemical properties. By taking 1t glass wool as the functional unit, this paper quantitatively obtains that the impact of the product on primary energy demand, greenhouse effect, acidification potential, photochemical ozone formation potential and respirable inorganics is 1.12×105MJ/t, 8×103kg CO2 equivalent/t, 84.1kg SO2 equivalent/t, 3.21kg NMVOC/t and 15.5kg PM2.5 equivalent/t respectively. This paper provides reference for enterprise's cleaner production and consumer's green material selection by making life cycle assessment for glass wool insulation material, quantifying the environmental load of glass wool product, identifying the environment hot spots in product life cycle and illustrating the environment compatibility of product.

Abstract:
Heat transfer phenomena in multilayer structures have gained interest due to their promising use in thermal insulation and thermoelectricity applications. In such systems, nanostructuring has been used to introduce moderate interfacial density, and it has been demonstrated that interfacial thermal resistance plays a crucial role in reducing thermal conductivity κ. Nevertheless, the main constraint for actual applications is related to their tiny size because they are extremely thin to establish appreciable temperature gradients. In this work, by severe plastic deformation process of accumulative roll bonding (ARB), a 250 µm thick Cu-Nb multilayer containing more than 8000 interfaces with periods below 40 nm was obtained, enabling the production of bulk metallic nanolaminates with ultralow κ. Multilayers present an ultralow κ of ∼0.81 W/mK at 300 K, which is 100 times smaller than its Cu-Nb bulk counterpart, and even lower than the amorphous lattice limit for the Cu-Nb thin film system. By using electron diffusive mismatch model (EDMM), we argue that both electrons diffusively scattering at interface and those ballistically crossing the constituents are responsible for heat conduction in the Cu-Nb multilayers at nanoscale. Hence, ARB Cu-Nb multilayers are intriguing candidate materials which can prove avenues to achieve stable ultralow κ thermal barriers for robust applications.

The results of the mechanical characteristics determining the briquettes during the roll briquetting of the raw mixtures are presented. The fine fractions briquetting process of iron ore concentrate and ferrosilicon manganese with the liquid glass as a binder was investigated. The mechanical strength briquettes data for low and high stresses of the mixtures briquetting are obtained. According to the results of the briquettes test for dropping and crushing, the minimum amount values of binder in the mixtures are obtained. They provide a sufficient level of the briquette mechanical properties. The automated technological line for roll briquetting of raw mixtures with a binder is presented.

After briefly presenting the science of bulk-heterojunction solar cells, we report herein a shelf lifetime study performed by encapsulating the cells in a flexible and transparent gas barrier material. This method allows lifetimes as reported for glass encapsulation. Moreover, we propose a new approach to pattern organic solar cells and design large-scale modules. This technique, based on selective Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser etching, potentially enables low-cost, high-speed roll-to-roll operation.

Solar panels conduct electricity through aluminum strips on substrate surfaces. Ultrasonic roll welding can weld the conductive aluminum strips onto the glass substrates. This paper illustrates vibration characteristics and optimal design of amplitude horns used in the ultrasonic welding roll. Based on theoretical equations, this study used the ANSYS software to establish the parametric model according to design requirements. With the parametric model as the initial design, this study conducted modal analysis and harmonic analysis to obtain the vertical mode and disc bending mode of the horn, and measured the resonant frequency, amplitude amplification rate and stress distribution. Finally, this study implemented and verified the optimal coupled disc tool of the ultrasonic horn.

The fabrication of perovskite solar cells in an N-I-P structure with compact titanium dioxide blocking, mesoporous titanium dioxide scaffold, single-step perovskite and hole-transport layers deposited using the slot-die coating technique is reported. Devices on fluorine-doped tin oxide-coated glass substrates with evaporated gold top contacts and four slot-die-coated layers are demonstrated, and best cells reach stabilized power conversion efficiencies of 7%. This work demonstrates the suitability of slot-die coating for the production of layers within this perovskite solar cell stack and the potential to transfer to large area and roll-to-roll manufacturing processes.

A series of FeCoN films were successfully deposited on glass substrates in a magnetron sputtering system. Using oblique incidence method and FeCoN/Ru/FeCoN synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) structure, two additional anisotropies energy were introduced: oblique incidence anisotropy and exchange anisotropy energy, which marked enhancement of the effective magnetic anisotropy (Hk). The increment of Hk results in a significant improvement in the roll-off frequency of these films. The roll-off frequency of FeCoN/Ru/FeCoN films with SAF structure can reach up to 8.6 GHz. A feasible approach to conveniently controlling Hk of soft magnetic thin films by using oblique deposition and SAF structure can further improve their properties for the potential applications in the high frequency region.

The dispersion of PEG acts as plasticizer in PLA blends were investigated using thermal analysis. The comparisons were made between two melt processing method, twin screw extruder and two-roll mills to study how it will affect theTg,TcandTmof blends in DSC analysis. The TGA behavior was also studied for two-roll mills processing method to confirm the effect of PEG loading in PLA on degradation and amount of residue left after analysis. In DSC analysis, it can be seen clearly, the PEG loading decreased the glass transition temperature in all blends compares to neat PLA. For twin screw extruder blending, the crystallization peak existed for some blend. It was difference for two-roll mills blends where the crystallization peak absent in all blends with PEG loading. The presence of PEG gave no significant variation on melting temperature peak for both processing method.

Currently, the ceramic inner container draws great attention in the field of induction heating pot. Based on the traditional roll-forming process for ceramic pot, a new kind process was proposed to fabricate ceramic inner container and synchronously embed stainless steel plate by one-step high temperature sintering. The key technology for this process is to avoid the oxidation of SUS430 stainless steel plate during the high temperature sintering for a longtime by coating a glass-ceramic layer. In this research, the glass-ceramic coating with excellent high temperature oxidation resistance was optimized. The influences of ZrO2 content in the coating slurry on the high temperature oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance of SUS430 stainless steel plate with glass-ceramic coating were studied. Meanwhile, the coatings were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction and Thermal Expansion Analysis. The experimental results showed that the glass-ceramic coating was smooth and had excellent thermal shock resistance when the addition of ZrO2 reached 15wt%. The mass gain of the SUS430 stainless steel plate with glass-ceramic coating was only 0.453% after sintering at 1300°C for 10h in air atmosphere, which was less one percent than that of SUS430 stainless steel plate under the same sintering condition.

Abstract The influence of chill roll temperature and thermal annealing on the morphology and dynamic mechanical behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/titanium dioxide blend films prepared by a melt casting process was studied. The β phase of PVDF was formed at the chill roll temperature of 30°C. Furthermore, with the increase in this chill roll temperature, its structural conversion to the α phase was observed. No change in the crystal structure of either the β or α phase occurred on account of thermal annealing at 115°C for 24 h. The decrement in the storage modulus above the glass transition temperature ascribed to the mixed amorphous phase became smaller, as the chill roll temperature increased. Based on morphological observations, we deduced that the reason for this decrement is not that the film cast at 115°C was more crystalline than that cast at 30°C but that the actual weight fraction of PMMA in the mixed amorphous phase of the film cast at 115°C was lower than that of the one cast at 30°C.

In this study, the in situ consolidation of polypropylene matrix/glass reinforced rovings was performed combining two heating systems, an infrared oven and a hot air gun, and a roll pressing the commingled roving during hoop winding on a cylindrical mandrel. Process parameters were set up on the basis of a preliminary simulation of the heat transfer along the roving and then comparison of the results with experimental temperature profiles obtained by a noncontact thermometer. Composite samples were cut along the cylinder axis for mechanical characterization. Physical properties, such as density and void content, obtained using different processing conditions, were compared. Electron microscopy was performed in order to assess how processing conditions affect fiber–matrix impregnation.
