Abstract:
This thesis concerns the development of a new series of Sr-doped phosphate-based glasses for biomedical applications. Such glasses in powder form are envisaged to have applications in novel composite restorations where the following is achievable: dentin cell-mediated bioremineralization, dental pulp regeneration and as carrier for therapeutics or antibacterial ions. The initial aim was to produce soluble porous phosphate glasses using the sol-gel method (phosphate-alkoxide based sol-gel process). Knowing the effect that the variation of Ca content has on the dissolution properties of the glass, a series of glasses where Ca was progressively increased at the expense of Na was produced. The structure of the prepared samples was probed by XRD, XRF and FTIR to confirm the successful synthesis of the target phosphate-based glass compositions. After that a promising methodology was established, attempts were made to replace Ca with Sr. Different Sr sources were used without success due to the difficulty to fully dissolve those precursors in the sol-gel mixture. Subsequently, the issue of the toxicity of some precursors and solvents used in the sol-gel procedure was recognised. To overcome this obstacle, efforts were made to replace the toxic precursor chemicals with safer ones. Nevertheless, due to the low solubility of some new precursors and the low reactivity of others, the sol-gel process did not proceed in a predictable and reproducible fashion. At this stage, the sol-gel route was put aside, and two alternative soft and water-based chemical approaches were experimented: the precipitation method and the coacervation process. The first one was found to be unsuitable for our needs for two main reasons: 1) the presence of Na in the composition generated a crystalline material (instead of a glassy amorphous one); 2) the Ca/P ratio of our composition fell in the range of crystalline phase by using this method. In addition, the yield was really low. The second method (coacervation process) was a complete success. The glassy nature of the materials obtained was proved by XRD and XRF and the surface features were tested by BET and SEM. The process was retained for a while as the preferred synthesis route and both the scale-up effect and the possibility to add Sr were analysed. The production scale of the material was increased by 5 times and different Sr sources were tested to find the best one. XRD and XRF analysis proved both the success of the scale-up and the incorporation of the Sr in glass composition

Liardet, Frances. "Role of craft practice in changing glass working traditions : the formation of glass vessels in the Classical and Hellenistic Mediterranean world." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54457/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study combines a theoretical modelling of dexterity with a practical apprenticeship in glass-working in order to examine a group of core-formed glass alabastra from Mediterranean Group I (c.525 to c.400 BCE). Core-formed vessels were made by forming glass around an internal mould which was scraped out after the vessel had cooled. The core-forming tradition lasted from c.1500 BCE until c.100 BCE. Mediterranean Group I is of interest because of the wide variety of consistency displayed in body shaping, rim and handle making, and decoration. To understand this variety it was necessary to undertake a theoretical and practical investigation of skill. The theoretical investigation revealed that skill has been conventionally analysed in terms of knowledge. This cognition-based analysis ignores the dimension of moving, specifically of the skilled gesture and the process of becoming dexterous. The practical apprenticeship demonstrated that this process, as a kinaesthetic experience, is value-positive - that is to say, it gives rise to value judgements on artefact feature, gesture in synergy with tools and materials, and craft working behaviour. This remodelling of skill allows one to form a gestural as opposed to a feature-based artefact typology and in so doing to identify, not simply distinct communities of practice, but different types of communities whose judgements arose out of the experience of becoming dexterous. Redefined in this way skilled making can be repositioned within archaeological theory as a central mode of interaction with the material world, a mode which has the intrinsic potential to generate value and social meaning.

Abstract:
The present investigation deals with the crack initiation behavior of glasses from oxide based, oxynitride and also oxycarbide families. In particular, the relationship between chemical composition and mechanical properties (elasticity, hardness…) are investigated. The resistance to crack initiation is found by applying contact loading (using Vickers diamond indenter) on the polished surfaces of glasses. Loads ranging from few mN to 196 N were applied and the imprints were analyzed using optical/SEM and AFM microscopes. The more the material deforms (permanently) beneath the indenter, the larger is the resistance it offers to crack initiation. Densification decreases with increasing the size of the modifier cation in silica based oxide glass series. We also studied the influence of diamond particles on the deformation behavior of silicon oxycarbide glass. The addition of 2 μm size (20 vol%) diamond particles leads to an increment of hardness and fracture toughness (SENB technique) by a factor of 2 and 4, respectively. It also influenced the load required for crack initiation under Vickers indenter, increasing it from 2. 903 to 49. 03 N

Abstract:
Over the years a number of chalcogenide glass compositions have been studied as host matrices for Rare Earth (RE) ions. However, it still remains a great challenge to obtain a glass matrix with high solubility of RE ions and to fabricate a RE doped chalcogenide glass fiber with good optical quality. The present PhD thesis focuses on the study of new glassy systems as host matrices for doping of RE ions, which allowed to obtain RE doped optical fibers transparent in near and middle IR. Studied glassy systems were based on well-known arsenic sulphide (As2S3) glasses co-doped with Tm3+ ions and different glass modifiers. Firstly, the addition of Gallium (Ga) ions as co-dopants was examined and their influence on the emission properties of Tm ions was explored. With the incorporation of Ga into the host, Tm doped As2S3 glasses display three strong emission bands at 1.2 μm (1H5→3H6), 1.4 μm (3H4→3F4) and 1.8 μm (3F4→3H6) under excitation wavelengths of 698 nm and 800 nm. Despite the very small glass forming region of the system Ga-As-S we could optimise the concentration ratio of Ga and Tm to achieve the highest possible photoluminescence efficiency. From the optimal composition, Tm3+ doped Ga-As-S fiber was drawn and its luminescence properties were studied. Through structural characterisation of Tm doped Ga-As-S glasses, using Raman spectroscopy and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy at As K-edge, Ga K-edge and Tm L3-edge, a formation mechanism has been proposed for this glassy system and it was correlated with luminescence features of Tm ions. In the second part, the modification of Tm3+ doped As2S3 glasses with the incorporation of halides (namely Iodine (I2)) was investigated, as a method for tailoring the process parameters for purification, in order to obtain a high purity glass matrix via chemical distillation. All three of above mentioned emission bands were observed for this system as well, under the 800 nm of excitation wavelength. Optical, thermal and structural properties of these glassy systems were characterized experimentally depending on the concentration of I2 and Tm in the glass, where the attention was concentrated on two principal aspects: the influence of the concentration of I2 on the intensity of emission of Tm and the mechanisms responsible for the increase of the solubility of Tm ions in As2S3 glass matrix with addition of I2.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been increasing concern that gender bias has prevented women from advancing as rapidly and as frequently as men into management positions. Although the number of women managers has increased, they may experience difficulty moving into upper management positions. The purpose of our research was to study employee gender perception of key variables of women and the positions held in high technology companies. In this research, phenomenological research method was chosen, because the aim of it is to determine what the experience means for the people who have experienced it. Based on the collected data, answers and experiences, structural analysis was done in order to find out the major phenomena of gender perceptions. A number of variables uncover the perception of aspects of policy and gender and barriers that may affect female employees' opportunities for advancement. Using a sample of 30 full-time employees from Company A, the results indicated that position held was significantly different for male and female employees. The results also indicated that neither male nor female employees appeared to notice the apparent perceptions apparently as a glass ceiling within their company and the Implications discussed and recommendations provided. With reference to the Empirical research, this paper increases the knowledge about women’s career development and provides recommendations how to deal with it. It is also expected that this thesis will be helpful to all women who are in the labour market for their career development and advancement.

Full text
Abstract:
Our previous results showed that oligodendrocyte development is regulated by both nociceptin and its G-protein coupled receptor, the nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptor (NOPR). The present in vitro and in vivo findings show that nociceptin plays a crucial conserved role in both human and rodent brain astrocytes, regulating the levels of the glutamate/aspartate transporter GLAST/EAAT1. This nociceptin-mediated response takes place during a critical developmental window that coincides with astrocyte maturation and synapse formation. GLAST/EAAT1 upregulation by nociceptin is mediated by NOPR and the downstream participation of a complex signaling cascade that involves the interaction of several kinase systems, including PI-3K/AKT, mTOR and JAK. Because GLAST is the main glutamate transporter during brain maturation, these novel findings suggest that nociceptin plays a crucial role in regulating the function of early astrocytes and their capacity to support glutamate homeostasis in the developing brain.

Abstract:
Successful leadership is the dream of all the students of leadership for which various elements including personality, skills, vision etc. are mentioned by various scholars and researchers, but what is interesting to acknowledge is that all these elements are a manifest of the moment that alter the identity of an ordinary person into a successful leader. These moments are known to be called crucible of leadership.Crucible has a strong connection to the leadership but the mystery of what shapes these crucibles is an ever going process of research and narration. The fascination with studying the recipe of crucible is built on the foundation of my own crucible of leadership that shaped my skills and vision. Considering that, I decided to explore the recipe of crucible for what is close to me and for which I have the most knowledge about, I was ascertain to produce an informative piece of document for the readers with good authenticity and reality in my work. For this purpose I chose to explore the recipe of crucible for Pakistani female leaders. In the crucible of leadership, one of the most important element that plays role is the antecedents of a life story that builds a way to crucible and successful leadership. Thus, my focus of this study was to explore and narrate such antecedents that are the prime source of crucible of leadership for successful Pakistani female leaders. In order to do so, I had to get deep knowledge of the personal life of Pakistani female leaders, which I did by studying their biographies and testimonial accounts building a theory of antecedents as recipe of crucible through the approach of grounded theory. My qualitative analysis and sound coding, suggested a theory that, the most essential antecedents that hasn’t change in generation for Pakistani female leadership are the family antecedents (education, gender equality and a strong belief on principles) and social antecedents (lack of social acceptance), participating highest in shaping the crucible. Whereas, religion is a supportive antecedent but is not significantly impacting the crucible of leadership, as is widely perceived in the world. Furthermore, I concluded my study with highlighting the factor of patriarchy and role expectancy as the major hindrance in the successful female leadership in Pakistan.

Walczak, Malgorzata. "Role and properties of the confined amorphous phase of polymers." Phd thesis, Paris, ENSAM, 2012. http://pastel.archives-ouvertes.fr/pastel-00839174.

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis was to elucidate the effect of confinement of amorphous phase of apolymer above its glass transition temperature being in contact with another polymer in a rigid state.Confinement is unavoidably connected with surfaces enforcing confinement. It is very difficult to separate theeffect of confinement from the effect of interfaces because both effects arise parallel and coincide. Multilayeredfilms were chosen as the base material for the studies because they contain multifold number of confined layerand response from confinement and interfaces is multifold increased. Hoping that some of experimentaltechniques are more sensitive to interfaces while others to confinement we selected the following:microcalorimetry, SSNMR, direlectrical spectroscopy and dynamic shear rheology. We have searched for theinfluence of PS on dynamics of phenyl rings of PC for PC/PS film with ratio 70/30 in the temperature rangefrom 296 K to 393 K employing PILGRIM pulse sequence. .We show that above the glass transition temperatureof PS, the PC component became more flexible. It is at the first glance the effect of the interface because there isno significant confinement of thicker PC layers. Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy measurements in our studyclearly provide evidence for deviations from a simple 2-phase structure in multilayered films PC/PS that is worthto be analyzed more in the future. The dielectric response of the multilayer samples was also modeled andcompared with experimental results. We obtained again discrepancies between the simulated spectra and themeasured spectra for multilayer films. Knowing the exact composition and viscoelastic behaviour of eachcomponent, the theoretical viscoelastic behavior of composites has been predicted numerically. Then, rheological tests have been made, and confronted with numerical predictions, to detect the confinement effect. The upper limit of thickness beyond which PS in confined layers at rubbery state becomes stiffer than in bulk isabout 150/200 nm. It appeared that the shear modulus of the thinnest PS layers (10 nm) is nearly 2.5 times largerthan that for bulk PS sample. We can note that Tg of PS layers also begins to increase beyond this upper limit ofthickness.. None of the experiment could clearly deliver the information about the effect of confinement orinterface on the behavior of PS layers alone. The results obtained here point out that separation of the effects ofconfinement and interfaces remains very difficult.

Full text
Abstract:
The stability of glass is linked to its composition and the atmosphere controls its alteration. The organic pollutants emitted by wooden showcases play a role in the alteration of historic glasses. This study examines the effects of acetic acid, formic acid and formaldehyde on objects from the National Museums of Scotland and on replica glasses aged artificially, all with a soda silicate composition. Composition was determined by electron microprobe and analytical decomposition of the Raman spectra was used to establish correlations between glass structure and composition. This allowed interpretation of the structural variations between bulk and altered glass. The structure of the glasses altered by pollutants is characteristic of an alteration by selective leaching, with transformation of the silicates linked to alkali into silanols, which subsequently underwent condensation reactions to form a more polymerised structure. The SIMS concentration profiles of glass aged in artificial and real atmospheres were used to follow the alteration evolution as a function of time, humidity and pollutant concentration. The water film formed by the humidity at the surface and its acidity control the alteration by leaching of alkali and hydration of the glass. Formaldehyde does not act on the leaching reaction while acids accelerate and amplify it. In mixed polluted atmosphere, formates compounds always predominate in the film even at low formic acid concentration. The humidity and temperature fluctuations in museums maintain the leaching reaction. Knowledge of the harmful effect of organic acid pollutants in the alteration of soda silicate glasses will help improve their conservation.

Full text
Abstract:
Amorphous polymers present dynamical heterogeneities at the scale of 3 to 5nm near Tg. Their contributions to mechanical properties are still not well known. We thus consider a simple model where each dynamical heterogeneities has its own relaxation time randomly drawn is a log-normal time distribution. A coarse –grained model at the dynamical heterogeneity is then developed in the continuous medium approximation. Finite element simulations are performed to calculate macroscopic mechanical properties of amorphous polymers taking account of mechanical couplings between heterogeneities. We show that the glass transition is controlled by a percolation of slow domains. Mechanical couplings result in viscoelastic spectrum highly narrowed as compared to the microscopic one. In thin films of polymers, we evidence a slowdown of the dynamics of relaxation as compared to the bulk one. Considering that a high applied stress increase the dynamics of polymers, we show that dynamical heterogeneities result in an internal stress network. The latter is a consequence a plastic deformation and result in an internal energy which is not released after an unloading

Abstract:
Xanthates, key compounds used in the mining industry for the separation of metals from ores, may have a significant impact on the ecosystems once discarded into the tailings. The aims of this study were to : characterize chemical and microbiological conditions in a tailings lagoon (Brown Creek gold mine); examine the feasability of using indigenous bacteria to degrade xanthate under laboratory conditions; and, optimize the biodegradation process by employing biofilm technology and plant-microbe associations. To achieve these, a simple but accurate HPLC method was developed. The chemical and biological constitution of the tailings lagoon was monitored over a 2 year period from March 1995 to February 1997. Xanthate degradative performance was improved by Phragmites australis and its root associated bacterial community. Cumulative amounts of xanthate degraded by this plant-microbe association were significantly higher than any other treatment, specifically glass-attached and free-living bacterial populations. An increased bacterial number in the extensively developed root, the presence of extracellular layer as revealed from scanning electron microscope and significance of plant removal via uptake were thought to be the possible explanations for the enhanced biodegradation activity observed. In view of the above, use of glass-attached bacteria and plant-microbe associations might provide a feasible solution to degrade xanthate in the tailings lagoon. The results obtained from this study suggest that the plant-microbe associations could provide a cost effective method to degrade/remove xanthate from the tailings lagoon runoff. This approach offers several ecological advantages. Firstly, it offers the advantage of a solar-powered treatment system that is aesthetically pleasing. Secondly, bioremediation can be done on site, thereby eliminating waste transportation costs. Finally, it has the added attraction of a higher potential for public acceptance

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business and Information Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019
Various efforts have been made to address the issue of gender equality at the workplace. It can be noted that even though equal opportunities between men and women may exist, the discrimination of women is still immanent in the workplace for example gender bias, unequal opportunities and underrepresentation. Previous research has failed to give a clear picture on the impact of information, communication, and technologies on gender gaps. It is mostly generalised. This study evaluates the role of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in promoting gender equality in the workplace. The research explores different theoretical perspectives namely Gender Glass Ceiling, Equity Theory, Technology Acceptance Model, Gender Inequality and Discrimination, Critical Information Systems Theory and the Feminist Theory. The study used a qualitative research method and a case study design in order to fulfil the study’s objectives and aim. It was carried out at a selected higher education institution in South Africa. Purposive sampling was used and 19 research participants were interviewed both men and women. The data that was collected was transcribed, coded using open coding, analysed and interpreted using thematic analysis to make sense of the findings. Ethical codes of conduct such as truthfulness, confidentiality, anonymity, beneficence and data protection were employed due to the sensitive nature of the study. Results show that ICTs play a vital role in promoting gender equality. ICTs enable employees to become educated, skilled and knowledgeable becoming aware of their rights and fair practices in the workplace. ICTs also enhance both men and women empowerment in independency, decision making and self-actualisation. Fundamental recommendations are given by the researcher regarding ICTs and the promotion of gender equality in the workplace to enhance organisational performance. Organisations need to view ICTs as an integral part of business and enhance its use to promote gender equality.

Abstract:
Are men and women equally likely to be perceived by people to possess similar requisite characteristics in comparable yet diverse occupations within management, leadership, and entrepreneurship? Because modern workplaces continue to be impacted by the persistence of varying perceptions of men and women about requisite attributes of successful people in several organizational roles, the concept of gender bias and occupational stereotypes has warranted the attention of theoreticians, scholars, and practitioners to a large extent (Koch, D’Mello, & Sackett, 2015; Kuwabara & Thébaud, 2017; Pinker, 2003; Pinker & Spelke, 2005). Although empirical evidence clearly indicates that gender inequalities in the workplace can have a significant effect on peoples’ perceptions about different characteristics of individuals in general and in specific organizational roles, there is a paucity of research examining these perceptions in a variety of leadership positions. Previous literature has investigated the gendered construction and re-construction of these professions but only to a limited extent (Gupta, Turban, Wasti, & Sikdar, 2009; Heilman, 2001, 2012; Heilman, Wallen, Fuchs, & Tamkins, 2004; Koenig, Eagly, Mitchell, & Ristikari, 2011; Kuwabara & Thébaud, 2017; Ryan, Haslam, Hersby, & Bongiorno, 2011; Schein, 1973, 1975, 2001). However, research in years past has not yet examined the full range of industry and entrepreneurial contexts that may create gender typecasting of roles. By extension, the current study focuses on how the gender-differentiated perceptions of men and women influenced the requisite characteristics of successful professional personnel in various managerial, leadership, and entrepreneurial positions. Specifically, given that these professions are influenced by gender-role expectations and stereotypes, this empirical investigation drew from role congruity theory of prejudice (Eagly & Karau, 2002) to examine the relative degree of perceived overlap between the traits associated with specific roles in management, leadership, and entrepreneurship with the traits commonly associated with men and women in general. Primary data were obtained from a diverse sample of 600 (12 x 50) working adults in the United States (N = 600, 300 women, 300 men) between the ages of 21 and 65. This was accomplished using an online survey designed via Qualtrics and administered through Amazon’s MTurk, from the lens of the classic think manager-think male (TMTM) research paradigm (Schein, 1973, 1975, 2001). The instrument used for data collection was the 92-item Schein Descriptive Index (SDI), which was used to describe sex role stereotypes and perceived requisite characteristics of twelve distinct target groups. The results of this study indicate that the perceived requisite traits of successful leaders and entrepreneurs are construed in predominantly masculine terms. These findings support and further inform the nature, existence, significance, and persistence of the “think manager-think male stereotype effect” (TMTM effect) and the “glass ceiling phenomenon” across a variety of managerial, leadership, and entrepreneurial roles, contexts, and industries. The TMTM effect was stronger among high tech entrepreneurs, CEOs, and entrepreneurs in general, whereas it was lessened for entrepreneurs in educational and health care roles, as well as for middle managers. Additionally, consistent with prior research, TMTM effects were generally either more likely to occur, or were stronger in magnitude among male raters than among female raters. These results largely support role congruity theory of gender differences in management and leadership that indicate incongruity of female gender stereotypes in general with stereotypes about high-status and prominent occupational roles in various organizations (Eagly & Karau, 2002). Specifically, the perceived trait overlap was noted to generally be stronger between men in general and successful leaders in various roles than that between women in general and successful leaders in various similar roles. The findings of the current study are expected to be valuable for those seeking to encourage opportunity regardless of candidate gender in management, entrepreneurship, and leadership, as well as for those promoting the role of women’s advancement in these professions. The study’s results have both theoretical and practical implications. Understanding these perceptions can have a significant impact on the gender biases prevalent in society, in organizations, and even across the specific entrepreneurial contexts and industries investigated within the current study. In today’s super-competitive business environment, firms must appreciate the importance of fostering equal opportunity, avoiding gender biases, and facilitating racial and ethnic diversity.

Abstract:

The problem for women in the work market has been and is still being widely studied from different domains and fields, there is however still countless fissures linked to it. Even though the gender equality has comprehensively increased in recent decades, it is still apparent in high responsibility positions. This situation caught our attention and stimulated us to analyse the women’s condition within organizations.

Scholars have developed different theories linked to organizations, but our complex and fast developing society has surpassed most of these classical theories, making them either partially or totally irrelevant. For instance standards such as hierarchical organizations, individualism and aggressiveness are no longer considered as the most efficient values.

This work investigates the barriers that women have to overcome in order to break though leading positions, as well as the identification of female and male leadership and their stereotypes’ consequences. Accordingly, we intend to propose solutions and new approaches liable to help integrating more women in high profile positions. We are aspiring to create a new trend representing successful leadership that is no longer correlated to the male stereotype.

The theoretical part engages in theories surrounding female gender leadership as well as gender related barriers, while the empirical method involves the conduction of semi structured interview with women in high management positions, with the aim of setting up a solid ground for analysis and discussion. Due to this fact, we believe that the woman is the future of the organization, therefore we firstly call for the implementation and the reinforcement of the female “role model” and secondly encourage companies to adopt and promote our new concept of “the ecological organization” in order to achieve a more flexible, balanced and sane organizational culture in a foreseeable future.

Abstract:
Despite their sudden growth in popularity, the role-playing actual-play podcasts have either been ignored or grouped with the genre of audio drama in prior scholarly works. Examination using frame analysis shows, however, that these podcasts are distinct in their engagement of the audience on multiple, simultaneous levels; levels which correspond with well-known media genres such as Documentary, Fiction, and Game Play. Each frame has its own layer of identities, conduct, and avenue for appealing to audiences just as these genres have their own distinct appeals. Through the combinations of these frames, familiar tropes and techniques such as Short-Form Improv and Campbell's monomyth are broadened and challenged, and identities become entangled in this post-modern medium. Delineating the features of these frames and exploring their interactions and interconnectivity not only helps to distinguish the actual-play podcast as its own distinct podcast genre, but also highlights the potential for using such frames or frame analysis in other media forms.

Abstract:
Due to the continual constant battle women have to face in order to progress in the workplace, it has become necessary to assess the degree of transformational change within the workplace within South Africa to try to establish just what these barriers are and how it can be overcome. To examine the main problem, three sub-problems were identified. The first sub-problem that had been identified dealt with what the women’s rights in the new South Africa. It was investigated by evaluating the situation in the New South Africa and what has changed from the past. Is there more gender equality or not. The second sub-problem looked at the barriers that women face in the workplace. It is evident that sexual harassment, male chauvinism, trying to balance work and family as well as organisational structure and culture were among the top barriers that are a hindrance to women’s advancement in the workplace. Finally, the third sub-problem investigated what the glass ceiling effect is and the effect that this has on women in the workplace. The investigation evaluated, and emphasised the difficulties that women face in order to progress in the hierarchy of not only management but other occupations as well. Results have shown that most females and males believe that the glass ceiling is prevalent in the workplace. Most people believe that women can however break through the glass ceiling but now there is a new phenomenon, “The Glass Cliff” which allows women to break through the glass ceiling but only of organisations that are already in trouble.

We focused on physical ageing of a non-woven produced by recycled fibers from plastic bottles. This non-woven is produced by drylaid-textile process and is used for building thermal insulation. Two networks are visible and structural relaxation has been investigated through the study of evolution of one fiber skin part with different couple time, temperature. Physical ageing of polymers can be followed by structural relaxation process. We showed that structural relaxation process is very long for temperatures of use far from glass transition temperature. Same results have been shown on the global non-woven stored in non-insulated box governed by Normandy weather. The combination of the two previous results reinforce our basic idea ; the insulator properties variation will be stable for long time only if temperature of use is far from glass transition temperature

In recent years, microlens arrays (MLAs) have been widely used in application of flat panel display, micro-scanning system, fiber coupling and optical communication, etc. For the numerous usages of MLAs, fabrication methods of MLAs have become a popular issue to research in these decades. It has long been known that fabrication methods of microlens array can be achieved by micro lithography processes, and replication of MLAs can be applied by hot embossing and traditional rolling processes, which we will review and discuss in this thesis. This paper presents a roll-to-roll method to fabricate microlens arrays on a glass substrate by using a cost-effective PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) mold.We fabricated microlens arrays mold, which was made by photoresist (AZ4620) on the silicon substrate by thermal reflow process, and transferred the pattern to PDMS film by spin coater(SUSS RC8, SUSS MicroTec). Roll-to-roll system is a standard printing process whose roller is made of acrylic cylinder surrounded with the PDMS mold. UV resin was chosen to be the material to make MLAs in rolling process with UV light curing. We investigated the quality of MLAs by changing the parameters, such as pressure to ensure good quality of MLAs v and the novel roll-to-roll system. Finally, the replication results will be presented, analyzed, and discussed about.

Full text
Abstract:
The multi-scale modeling of ion-solid interactions presented can lead to a fundamentally new approach for understanding temperature evolution and damage formation. A coupling of the Monte Carlo code, SRIM, to a C FEM heat transfer code was performed, enabling a link between the damage cascade event to the subsequent heat transfer. Modeling results indicate that for 1 MeV Ni ion irradiation in Ni52.5Nb10Zr15Ti15Pt7.5, the heat transfer rate is too large for direct crystallization. Although the damage cascade induces a peak temperature of 5300 K, within 6 picoseconds the temperature is below the glass transition temperature. This result implies that there is a cooling rate of 10^14 K/s, which is much greater than the critical cooling rate for this material. Ion irradiation was performed to compare modeling with experiment. No evidence of direct crystallization is observed under TEM. Nanocrystals are formed as a consequence of series of multistage phase transitions. This provides evidence that the energy dissipation occurs too quickly for direct crystallization, as crystals are found in regions having undergone substantial compositional changes. A host of conventional electron microscopy methods were employed to characterize the structural changes induced by 1 MeV Ni ion irradiation in Ni52.5Nb10Zr15Ti15Pt7.5 and identify the phases that form, Ni3Nb, Ni3Ti and Ni3Zr. Scanning TEM analysis revealed Pt segregation near crystal regions due to irradiation. Due to a lack of Pt crystal phases observed and high concentrations of Pt in crystal regions it is postulated that Pt is substituting for Ni to form (Ni,Pt)3Nb and (Ni,Pt)3Ti.

Female human resources account for half of population all over the world, and there is a gradual increase in the women’s labor force participation year by year; meanwhile women are exerting higher and higher influence in the army, but female military are limited to the jobs with glass ceiling due to all kinds of subjective and objective factors; and in addition to change in status and their diversified roles, job engagement is affected and also resignation tendency enhanced, and meanwhile there is a great impact on the organization efficiency. This paper uses the modern female military officers as the research subjects. Due to particular military jobs and discrete job sites, sampling is done according to the nature of serving organizations and questionnaires are collected from high-level and medium-level female officers, thus discussing the causal relationship between the knowledge of female military on glass ceiling, role conflict, job involvement and turnover intention. Structural Equation Modeling is used for data collection and analysis to help female military get out of job difficulties for effective human resource management and improvement in the organizational efficiency. Research results show that the knowledge of female military on glass ceiling and role conflict have a direct and indirect positive influence on the turnover intention, and among them the tendency of post transfer prevails, and moreover role conflict is the key factor on the job involvement and turnover intention of female military, so multi-role playing shall be primarily conquered for modern female military.

Volunteering - one of the topics which are still present in the society, as it can be perceived as a unique instrument to solve social challenges or organizing society with its specific conditions. The topic of my diploma thesis, based on the grounded theory method, is the process of building and maintaining the relationship of the volunteer to their voluntary work from the volunteers' perspective. I was curious as to what circumstances or limits accompany the forming of such a relationship in the social context and if certain "prototypes" can be found, which would differ in negotiating their role to their surroundings. In my thesis, I focus exclusively on those volunteers who have been given the "Křesadlo" award for the volunteer of the year, which provides the framework of this relationship. I would like to use my results to enrich the knowledge of volunteering's image, which could be used both on the academic field and when working with volunteers. Abstract:
This exploration involves the influence of a system of patriarchy on both women and men in an inclusive way within business context. The work attempts to move away from dualisms that stereotypically define gender according to patriarchy. The challenge of this work is to find ways of describing women and men that is less defined by gender and more about our similarities as human beings. It has been suggested in the research that the business environment is still a male dominated environment. It is therefore the intention of this work to encourage ways of defining ourselves that one person does not hold benefit one over another in an abusive way. As the system of patriarchy has been endorsed by the church, the research considers how the pastoral therapist may be relevant to the business environment.

Bendapudi, Namrita. "The Effect of the Rater's Implicit Person Theory on the Performance Evaluations of Male and Female Managers." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/3241.

Full text
Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Previous research has found that the clarity of information provided to raters about women managers’ performance affects ratings of their competence, likeability, and overall evaluation. The current study sought to contribute to this literature by examining whether individual differences of raters can explain the reason for differential performance evaluations of male and female managers, despite them both performing equally. For this purpose, the current research extended the findings of Heilman and colleagues by replicating their methodology while introducing a moderator variable, the rater’s Implicit Person Theory (IPT). The IPT differentiates people into either entity theorists (that is, those who believe that behavior is trait-based and therefore fixed and stable) and incremental theorists (those who believe that behavior is situationally mediated and hence, changeable). Specifically, it was proposed that the effects found in the previous study would be stronger when the rater possessed an entity theory as opposed to an incremental theory. In doing so, this research attempted to provide an understanding of why male and female managers might be given different ratings, all other things being equal. Analyses revealed results that were consistent with, as well as some that were quite inconsistent with, previous findings. Rater IPT was found to have a significant effect on ratings provided by male participants but not those of female participants. Other findings and implications are discussed and limitations and future research directions are stated.
