Full textThis thesis concerns the development of a new series of Sr-doped phosphate-based glasses for biomedical applications. Such glasses in powder form are envisaged to have applications in novel composite restorations where the following is achievable: dentin cell-mediated bioremineralization, dental pulp regeneration and as carrier for therapeutics or antibacterial ions. The initial aim was to produce soluble porous phosphate glasses using the sol-gel method (phosphate-alkoxide based sol-gel process). Knowing the effect that the variation of Ca content has on the dissolution properties of the glass, a series of glasses where Ca was progressively increased at the expense of Na was produced. The structure of the prepared samples was probed by XRD, XRF and FTIR to confirm the successful synthesis of the target phosphate-based glass compositions. After that a promising methodology was established, attempts were made to replace Ca with Sr. Different Sr sources were used without success due to the difficulty to fully dissolve those precursors in the sol-gel mixture. Subsequently, the issue of the toxicity of some precursors and solvents used in the sol-gel procedure was recognised. To overcome this obstacle, efforts were made to replace the toxic precursor chemicals with safer ones. Nevertheless, due to the low solubility of some new precursors and the low reactivity of others, the sol-gel process did not proceed in a predictable and reproducible fashion. At this stage, the sol-gel route was put aside, and two alternative soft and water-based chemical approaches were experimented: the precipitation method and the coacervation process. The first one was found to be unsuitable for our needs for two main reasons: 1) the presence of Na in the composition generated a crystalline material (instead of a glassy amorphous one); 2) the Ca/P ratio of our composition fell in the range of crystalline phase by using this method. In addition, the yield was really low. The second method (coacervation process) was a complete success. The glassy nature of the materials obtained was proved by XRD and XRF and the surface features were tested by BET and SEM. The process was retained for a while as the preferred synthesis route and both the scale-up effect and the possibility to add Sr were analysed. The production scale of the material was increased by 5 times and different Sr sources were tested to find the best one. XRD and XRF analysis proved both the success of the scale-up and the incorporation of the Sr in glass composition

Full textThe present investigation deals with the crack initiation behavior of glasses from oxide based, oxynitride and also oxycarbide families. In particular, the relationship between chemical composition and mechanical properties (elasticity, hardness…) are investigated. The resistance to crack initiation is found by applying contact loading (using Vickers diamond indenter) on the polished surfaces of glasses. Loads ranging from few mN to 196 N were applied and the imprints were analyzed using optical/SEM and AFM microscopes. The more the material deforms (permanently) beneath the indenter, the larger is the resistance it offers to crack initiation. Densification decreases with increasing the size of the modifier cation in silica based oxide glass series. We also studied the influence of diamond particles on the deformation behavior of silicon oxycarbide glass. The addition of 2 μm size (20 vol%) diamond particles leads to an increment of hardness and fracture toughness (SENB technique) by a factor of 2 and 4, respectively. It also influenced the load required for crack initiation under Vickers indenter, increasing it from 2. 903 to 49. 03 N

Full textOver the years a number of chalcogenide glass compositions have been studied as host matrices for Rare Earth (RE) ions. However, it still remains a great challenge to obtain a glass matrix with high solubility of RE ions and to fabricate a RE doped chalcogenide glass fiber with good optical quality. The present PhD thesis focuses on the study of new glassy systems as host matrices for doping of RE ions, which allowed to obtain RE doped optical fibers transparent in near and middle IR. Studied glassy systems were based on well-known arsenic sulphide (As2S3) glasses co-doped with Tm3+ ions and different glass modifiers. Firstly, the addition of Gallium (Ga) ions as co-dopants was examined and their influence on the emission properties of Tm ions was explored. With the incorporation of Ga into the host, Tm doped As2S3 glasses display three strong emission bands at 1.2 μm (1H5→3H6), 1.4 μm (3H4→3F4) and 1.8 μm (3F4→3H6) under excitation wavelengths of 698 nm and 800 nm. Despite the very small glass forming region of the system Ga-As-S we could optimise the concentration ratio of Ga and Tm to achieve the highest possible photoluminescence efficiency. From the optimal composition, Tm3+ doped Ga-As-S fiber was drawn and its luminescence properties were studied. Through structural characterisation of Tm doped Ga-As-S glasses, using Raman spectroscopy and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy at As K-edge, Ga K-edge and Tm L3-edge, a formation mechanism has been proposed for this glassy system and it was correlated with luminescence features of Tm ions. In the second part, the modification of Tm3+ doped As2S3 glasses with the incorporation of halides (namely Iodine (I2)) was investigated, as a method for tailoring the process parameters for purification, in order to obtain a high purity glass matrix via chemical distillation. All three of above mentioned emission bands were observed for this system as well, under the 800 nm of excitation wavelength. Optical, thermal and structural properties of these glassy systems were characterized experimentally depending on the concentration of I2 and Tm in the glass, where the attention was concentrated on two principal aspects: the influence of the concentration of I2 on the intensity of emission of Tm and the mechanisms responsible for the increase of the solubility of Tm ions in As2S3 glass matrix with addition of I2.

Full textAmorphous polymers present dynamical heterogeneities at the scale of 3 to 5nm near Tg. Their contributions to mechanical properties are still not well known. We thus consider a simple model where each dynamical heterogeneities has its own relaxation time randomly drawn is a log-normal time distribution. A coarse –grained model at the dynamical heterogeneity is then developed in the continuous medium approximation. Finite element simulations are performed to calculate macroscopic mechanical properties of amorphous polymers taking account of mechanical couplings between heterogeneities. We show that the glass transition is controlled by a percolation of slow domains. Mechanical couplings result in viscoelastic spectrum highly narrowed as compared to the microscopic one. In thin films of polymers, we evidence a slowdown of the dynamics of relaxation as compared to the bulk one. Considering that a high applied stress increase the dynamics of polymers, we show that dynamical heterogeneities result in an internal stress network. The latter is a consequence a plastic deformation and result in an internal energy which is not released after an unloading

Full textVarious efforts have been made to address the issue of gender equality at the workplace. It can be noted that even though equal opportunities between men and women may exist, the discrimination of women is still immanent in the workplace for example gender bias, unequal opportunities and underrepresentation. Previous research has failed to give a clear picture on the impact of information, communication, and technologies on gender gaps. It is mostly generalised. This study evaluates the role of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in promoting gender equality in the workplace. The research explores different theoretical perspectives namely Gender Glass Ceiling, Equity Theory, Technology Acceptance Model, Gender Inequality and Discrimination, Critical Information Systems Theory and the Feminist Theory. The study used a qualitative research method and a case study design in order to fulfil the study’s objectives and aim. It was carried out at a selected higher education institution in South Africa. Purposive sampling was used and 19 research participants were interviewed both men and women. The data that was collected was transcribed, coded using open coding, analysed and interpreted using thematic analysis to make sense of the findings. Ethical codes of conduct such as truthfulness, confidentiality, anonymity, beneficence and data protection were employed due to the sensitive nature of the study. Results show that ICTs play a vital role in promoting gender equality. ICTs enable employees to become educated, skilled and knowledgeable becoming aware of their rights and fair practices in the workplace. ICTs also enhance both men and women empowerment in independency, decision making and self-actualisation. Fundamental recommendations are given by the researcher regarding ICTs and the promotion of gender equality in the workplace to enhance organisational performance. Organisations need to view ICTs as an integral part of business and enhance its use to promote gender equality.

Full textThe problem for women in the work market has been and is still being widely studied from different domains and fields, there is however still countless fissures linked to it. Even though the gender equality has comprehensively increased in recent decades, it is still apparent in high responsibility positions. This situation caught our attention and stimulated us to analyse the women’s condition within organizations.
Scholars have developed different theories linked to organizations, but our complex and fast developing society has surpassed most of these classical theories, making them either partially or totally irrelevant. For instance standards such as hierarchical organizations, individualism and aggressiveness are no longer considered as the most efficient values.
This work investigates the barriers that women have to overcome in order to break though leading positions, as well as the identification of female and male leadership and their stereotypes’ consequences. Accordingly, we intend to propose solutions and new approaches liable to help integrating more women in high profile positions. We are aspiring to create a new trend representing successful leadership that is no longer correlated to the male stereotype.
The theoretical part engages in theories surrounding female gender leadership as well as gender related barriers, while the empirical method involves the conduction of semi structured interview with women in high management positions, with the aim of setting up a solid ground for analysis and discussion. Due to this fact, we believe that the woman is the future of the organization, therefore we firstly call for the implementation and the reinforcement of the female “role model” and secondly encourage companies to adopt and promote our new concept of “the ecological organization” in order to achieve a more flexible, balanced and sane organizational culture in a foreseeable future.

Full textWe focused on physical ageing of a non-woven produced by recycled fibers from plastic bottles. This non-woven is produced by drylaid-textile process and is used for building thermal insulation. Two networks are visible and structural relaxation has been investigated through the study of evolution of one fiber skin part with different couple time, temperature. Physical ageing of polymers can be followed by structural relaxation process. We showed that structural relaxation process is very long for temperatures of use far from glass transition temperature. Same results have been shown on the global non-woven stored in non-insulated box governed by Normandy weather. The combination of the two previous results reinforce our basic idea ; the insulator properties variation will be stable for long time only if temperature of use is far from glass transition temperature

In recent years, microlens arrays (MLAs) have been widely used in application of flat panel display, micro-scanning system, fiber coupling and optical communication, etc. For the numerous usages of MLAs, fabrication methods of MLAs have become a popular issue to research in these decades. It has long been known that fabrication methods of microlens array can be achieved by micro lithography processes, and replication of MLAs can be applied by hot embossing and traditional rolling processes, which we will review and discuss in this thesis. This paper presents a roll-to-roll method to fabricate microlens arrays on a glass substrate by using a cost-effective PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) mold.We fabricated microlens arrays mold, which was made by photoresist (AZ4620) on the silicon substrate by thermal reflow process, and transferred the pattern to PDMS film by spin coater(SUSS RC8, SUSS MicroTec). Roll-to-roll system is a standard printing process whose roller is made of acrylic cylinder surrounded with the PDMS mold. UV resin was chosen to be the material to make MLAs in rolling process with UV light curing. We investigated the quality of MLAs by changing the parameters, such as pressure to ensure good quality of MLAs v and the novel roll-to-roll system. Finally, the replication results will be presented, analyzed, and discussed about.

Female human resources account for half of population all over the world, and there is a gradual increase in the women’s labor force participation year by year; meanwhile women are exerting higher and higher influence in the army, but female military are limited to the jobs with glass ceiling due to all kinds of subjective and objective factors; and in addition to change in status and their diversified roles, job engagement is affected and also resignation tendency enhanced, and meanwhile there is a great impact on the organization efficiency. This paper uses the modern female military officers as the research subjects. Due to particular military jobs and discrete job sites, sampling is done according to the nature of serving organizations and questionnaires are collected from high-level and medium-level female officers, thus discussing the causal relationship between the knowledge of female military on glass ceiling, role conflict, job involvement and turnover intention. Structural Equation Modeling is used for data collection and analysis to help female military get out of job difficulties for effective human resource management and improvement in the organizational efficiency. Research results show that the knowledge of female military on glass ceiling and role conflict have a direct and indirect positive influence on the turnover intention, and among them the tendency of post transfer prevails, and moreover role conflict is the key factor on the job involvement and turnover intention of female military, so multi-role playing shall be primarily conquered for modern female military.

Bendapudi, Namrita. "The Effect of the Rater's Implicit Person Theory on the Performance Evaluations of Male and Female Managers." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/3241.
Full textPrevious research has found that the clarity of information provided to raters about women managers’ performance affects ratings of their competence, likeability, and overall evaluation. The current study sought to contribute to this literature by examining whether individual differences of raters can explain the reason for differential performance evaluations of male and female managers, despite them both performing equally. For this purpose, the current research extended the findings of Heilman and colleagues by replicating their methodology while introducing a moderator variable, the rater’s Implicit Person Theory (IPT). The IPT differentiates people into either entity theorists (that is, those who believe that behavior is trait-based and therefore fixed and stable) and incremental theorists (those who believe that behavior is situationally mediated and hence, changeable). Specifically, it was proposed that the effects found in the previous study would be stronger when the rater possessed an entity theory as opposed to an incremental theory. In doing so, this research attempted to provide an understanding of why male and female managers might be given different ratings, all other things being equal. Analyses revealed results that were consistent with, as well as some that were quite inconsistent with, previous findings. Rater IPT was found to have a significant effect on ratings provided by male participants but not those of female participants. Other findings and implications are discussed and limitations and future research directions are stated.
