A great deal of evidence exists in support of Bronze Age intra-Aegean trade, but the dynamics and material goods that made up these exchanges are still being explored. Initially, foreign glass most likely originated in Western Asia and Egypt. Recent excavations at the Minoan sites of Chryssi, Papadiokambos, and Mochlos have provided evidence of such trade on Crete. All three sites yielded glass beads that, judging by their rarity in the region, must have come from elsewhere. While glass artifacts such as those found on Minoan Crete are often assumed to be Egyptian in genesis, a Western Asian source has not been sufficiently ruled out. Based on their findspots, appearance, and our present understanding of shipping and trade in the Bronze Age Aegean, it is most likely that the beads from Chryssi, Papadiokambos, and Mochlos were manufactured in the Levant and arrived in Crete from the East.

Abstract:
Venetian glass, especially that of the Renaissance, has been admired for centuries due to its quality workmanship and overall visual appeal. In addition, a certain mystique surrounds the glassmakers of Venice and their products. This dissertation research undertakes a comprehensive view of the culture and technology of Renaissance Venetian glass and glassmaking. Particular attention is paid to luxury vessel glass, especially those made of the "colorless" material typically referred to as cristallo. This segment of the industry is seen as the primary locus of substantial technological change. The primary question examined in this work is the nature of this technological change, specifically that observed in the Renaissance Venetian glass industry circa 1450-1550. After providing an appropriate social and economic context, a discussion of Venice's glass industry in the pre-Renaissance is given. Industry and guild trends and conditions which would be influential in later centuries are identified. In addition, the sudden expansion of Venice's glass production in the mid-15th century is described as a self-catalyzed phenomenon in response to prevailing cultural and economic conditions. Demand is identified as a necessary precursor to the production of luxury glass. Building on this concept, activities and behaviors relevant to demand, production, and distribution of Venetian glass are examined in depth. The interaction between the Renaissance consumer and producer is treated along with the position of Venice's glass industry in the overall culture and economy of the city. It is concluded that the technological changes observed in Venice's Renaissance luxury glass industry arose primarily out of perceived consumer demand. Social and economic circumstances particular to Renaissance Italy created an environment in which a technological development such as cristallo glass could take place. The success of the industry in the 15th and 16th centuries can be found in the fruitful interplay between consumers and producers, the manner in which the industry was organized, coupled with the skill of the Venetian glassmakers to make and work new glass compositions into a variety of desired objects.

Abstract:
The thesis argues that the relations between culture and government are best viewed through an analysis of the programmatic and institutional contexts for the use of culture as an interface in the relations between citizenship and government. Discussion takes place through an analysis of the history of art programmes which, in seeking to target a 'general' population, have attempted to equip this population with various particular capacities. We aim to provide a history of rationalities of art administration. This will provide us with an approach through which we might understand some of the seemingly irreconcilable policy discourses which characterise contemporary discussion of government arts funding. Research for this thesis aims to make a contribution to historical research on arts institutions in Australia and provide a base from which to think about the role of government in culture in contemporary Australia. In order to reflect on the relations between government and culture the thesis discusses the key rationales for the conjunction of art, citizenship and government in post-World War Two (WWII) Australia to the present day. Thus, the thesis aims to contribute an overview of the discursive origins of the main contemporary rationales framing arts subvention in post-WWII Australia. The relations involved in the government of culture in late eighteenth-century France, nineteenth-century Britain, America in the 1930s and Britain during WWII are examined by way of arguing that the discursive influences on government cultural policy in Australia have been diverse. It is suggested in relation to present day Australian cultural policy that more effective terms of engagement with policy imperatives might be found in a history of the funding of culture which emphasises the plurality of relations between governmental programmes and the self-shaping activities of citizens. During this century there has been a shift in the political rationality which organises government in modern Western liberal democracies. The historical case studies which form section two of the thesis enable us to argue that, since WWII, cultural programmes have been increasingly deployed on the basis of a governmental rationality that can be described as advanced or neo-liberal. This is both in relation to the forms these programmes have taken and in relation to the character of the forms of conduct such programmes have sought to shape in the populations they act upon. Mechanisms characteristic of such neo-liberal forms of government are those associated with the welfare state and include cultural programmes. Analysis of governmental programmes using such conceptual tools allows us to interpret problems of modern social democratic government less in terms of oppositions between structure and agency and more in terms of the strategies and techniques of government which shape the activities of citizens. Thus, the thesis will approach the field of cultural management not as a field of monolithic decision making but as a domain in which there are a multiplicity of power effects, knowledges, and tactics, which react to, or are based upon, the management of the population through culture. The thesis consists of two sections. Section one serves primarily to establish a set of historical and theoretical co-ordinates on which the more detailed historical work of the thesis in section two will be based. We conclude by emphasising the necessity for the continuation of a mix of policy frameworks in the construction of the relations between art, government and citizenship which will encompass a focus on diverse and sometimes competing policy goals.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the transformation of the exhibition catalogue in Australia, from modest exhibition documentation to autonomous publication. This discussion is largely confined to exhibition catalogues produced by Australia's public galleries between approximately1965-2002. The thesis considers why the exhibition catalogue experienced such a dramatic change in such a relatively short period. The thesis reveals how catalogues are shaped by the internal tensions and external pressures experienced by art institutions as their roles and responsibilities change over time. During the period in question, catalogues have kept track of developments in art history by experimenting with changing curatorial fashions and critical approaches. Viewed as a time series, the exhibition catalogue reveals subtle and significant clues about art in its changing institutional setting. The thesis explores the professionalisation of the public gallery network, the nexus between academic art history and the museum, and pressures affecting the management of exhibitions in Australia. Each of these factors has influenced the development of the exhibition catalogue. It is shown how catalogues possess a multiplicity of values, which are often contradictory, and how these values determine the catalogue's practical, commemorative and informative functions. To better understand the relationship between the art museum and the contexts and discourses within which art is produced and disseminated for critical appraisal, this thesis will draw upon a body of theoretical literature broadly known as the sociology of art. The work of Pierre Bourdieu provides a general theoretical framework. Methodologically, the thesis is qualitative. The massive proliferation of exhibition catalogues in Australia since the mid-1970s has meant that the samples examined are broadly representative. In this respect, the thesis has followed the examples of earlier, though less comprehensive, studies from abroad.

The distinctive presentations of the use of glass sheets by Gerhard Richter (1932-) occupy a special place in his entire oeuvre. This thesis particularly examines Richter's glass works invested with distinctive mobility with a keen awareness of the significant implications of the concept of "movement" that could allow one to reflect on the existing contexts of the critique of his creation. Chapter one, referring to the current arguments about Richter's radical (dis)engagement with viscous pictorial traditions, addresses the critical availability and limits of "double negation" through focus on the implications of strategic irony. In chapter two, emphasis is placed on the immobilized "pictorial perspective" from which Richter's glass works can be more immediately comprehended, by referring to the history of glass. Following these preliminary discussions, chapter three intends to investigate the generative elusiveness of Richter's glass works with a wide spectrum of the gestures of glass panes that transforms the glass works from a mere viewed object to a vital thing looking at viewers.
L'usage de plaques de verre occupe une place notable dans la production artistique de Gerhard Richter (1932-). Ce mémoire propose d'examiner les diverses exploitations plastiques que Richter fait à partir du verre en portant une attention particulière aux implications liées au concept de « mouvement ». Ceci étant, c'est concurremment à l'analyse des écrits portant sur les œuvres de l'artiste que notre analyse s'ancrera. Méditant sur l'idée selon laquelle Richter opterait pour un (dés)engagment radical par rapport à la tradition picturale, le premier chapitre traite des avantages et des désavantages de l'utilisation par la critique de la notion de « double négation », à l'aune des implications ironiques. Tout en se référent à l'histoire du verre, le second chapitre se penche sur la « perspective picturale » immobile à partir de laquelle les œuvres de verre de Richter peuvent être immédiatement appréhendées. The purpose of this thesis is to identify essential characteristics of the first generation of Romantic landscape painters and painting movements in a given English-speaking country which followed the generation of Turner, Constable and Martin in England, and then trace how the second generation of Romantic-realist painters represents a different paradigm. For a paradigmatic construct of the first generation, the focus is on the lives and major works of the American arch-Romantic landscape painter Thomas Cole (1801--1848) and the Australian Romantic landscape painter Conrad Martens (1801--1878). The second generation model features the American Frederic Edwin Church (1826--1900), the Australian William Charles Piguenit (1836--1914), and the British Canadian Lucius Richard O'Brien (1832--1899). Cole and Martens, closer to their predecessors in England, created dynamic paradigm shifts in their new countries. Following them, the second generation of Romantic-realists produced a synthesis of romanticism, scientific naturalism, and nationalistic symbolism.

Abstract:
Visual arts history and criticism occupy central positions in visual arts curriculum statements in Western Australia. This status is sustained by the belief that the study of visual arts history and criticism actively contributes to the education of the student as a "whole person". In reality however, rather than attending to the holistic education of students, the application of visual arts history and criticism in Western Australian schools tends to be pragmatic and instrumental - visual arts teachers often use visual art works as "learning aids" because they don't have time, interest or experience in dealing with visual arts works in any other way. While visual arts history and criticism offer the student a valuable life-skill worth acquiring for the contribution they could make to the student's autonomy and personal welfare, this understanding often seems a foreign concept for many classroom teachers. The difference between theorists' and teachers' understandings of the place and purpose of visual arts history and criticism provides an important area of inquiry requiring urgent attention. This research makes a foray into this domain with the purpose of shedding light on the content and methods used by middle school visual arts teachers and their students' perceptions of the content and methods. A qualitative descriptive study was selected for the research taking the form of semi-structured interviews with six teachers. An interview guide was used and transcripts deriving from this methodology were coded by way of reference to the original research questions and classifications which emanated from emergent themes. The teacher interviews were complemented by a questionnaire administered to one class of students from each of the six schools. Participating teachers were selected through a stratified sampling technique. Analysis of data was undertaken from a qualitative stance in the case of interview participants. Narrative-style reporting of interview content was employed to facilitate accurate representation of the teachers' perceptions of visual arts history and criticism at the middle school level. A quantitative analysis of students' questionnaires provided triangulation of methodology, ensuring greater levels of validity than would be afforded by qualitative methods alone. With pressure being applied by the impending implementation of the Curriculum Framework for Kindergarten to Year 12 Education in Western Australian Schools (1998) for the formal inclusion of Arts Responses (aesthetics, art criticism) and Arts in Society (art history), a pressing need exists for clear information about current professional practice. Findings indicated that a misalignment appears to exist between theoretical assumptions embedded in documentation supporting the implementation of the Framework and actual classroom teaching practice. The implications of such misalignment, albeit illustrated on a small scale, are that the initiatives of the Framework may not be sustainable in the longer term, precisely because they are built upon invalid assumptions about what teachers actually do. Whilst the size of the sample and scope of the research limits the generalisability of findings, this first foray may provide impetus for a more comprehensive and evaluative study at a later date.

Abstract:
Mulka's Cave is a profusely decorated hollow boulder at The Humps, a large granite dome near Hyden, a small town 350 km southeast of Perth. The importance of the artwork has been recognised for 50 years. Test excavations in the cave in 1988 yielded 210 mainly quartz artefacts assignable to the Australian Small Tool phase and a radiocarbon date of 420 ± 50 BP from just below the lowest artefact found. The artwork was recorded in detail in 2004. The recorder considered the radiocarbon date to be 'anomalously young' because most of the artwork is in poor condition, suggesting that it was made 3000-2000 years ago. Other dated rock art sites in Southwestern Australia came into use 4000-3000 BP. The excavators argued that the site was fairly insignificant, while the rock art researcher thought the profusion of motifs (452) made it a site of some significance, particularly in Southwestern Australia. The main aim of this study was to investigate these conflicting claims by re-investigating how Mulka's Cave had been used by Aboriginal people in the archaeological past. This research became possible because local tourist organisations obtained federal funding to install an elevated walkway outside the cave in 2006. Under Section 18 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act (1972) 12 of the 34 postholes required were excavated and artefacts were collected from all the ground surfaces to be impacted. Subsequently, under Section 16 of the AHA, four, small, 0.5 x 0.5 m, testpits were excavated around the site: outside the cave entrance, on The Humps and in the Camping Area; a sheltered spot where the Traditional Owners had camped as children, with their grandparents. Organic material was scarce, so analysis focused on the numbers and types of stone artefacts recovered. The artefacts excavated in 1988 were also re-analysed. Five radiocarbon dates were obtained, which suggested that people began visiting the Camping Area (and using ochre) about 6500 BP, making Mulka's Cave one of the oldest radiometrically dated rock art sites in southern Western Australia. The artefact data from Mulka's Cave were compared to those from these sites. The low artefact discard rate and high proportion of retouched/formal tools found at Mulka's Cave may indicate that the site was used differently from the other sites, but the data are problematic. Most (70%) of the handstencils in Mulka's Cave can be attributed to adolescents, possibly boys, which may also suggest that the site had ceremonial significance; perhaps as a focus for male initiation rituals. The artefact data do not support this hypothesis, however. There is no evidence of spatial patterning in artefact type or frequency across the site, which would be expected if the cave had had a ritual function. Instead, the Camping Area, Walkway Area and Mulka's Cave itself seem to have been used similarly. It was concluded that, given the scarcity of free-standing potable water in the surrounding region and the presence at The Humps of two capacious gnammas (rockholes), that people probably visited the site when the gnammas were full. A wide variety of plant and animal foods would also have been available before the country was cleared for agriculture. When at Mulka's Cave, they may well have added to the corpus of rock art and carried out other ceremonial business, but there is no archaeological evidence for the latter. It was also concluded that much more research needs to be undertaken in this neglected part of the semi-arid zone before the significance of Mulka's Cave can be properly assessed and its place in the archaeological record of Southwestern Australia determined.

Abstract:
The dissertation examines the history of modern design in early 20th-century China. The emergent field of design looked to replace the specific cultural and historical references of visual art with an international language of geometry and abstraction. However, design practices also, encouraged extracting culturally unique visual forms by looking inward at a nation’s constructed past. The challenge of uniting these dual, and seemingly contradictory, goals was met in a collaborative book cover design project between Lu Xun (1881-1936), China’s most influential modern writer, and Tao Yuanqing (1893-1929), a painter who transformed ancient motifs into a transnational vocabulary of modern design. As the title suggests, the dissertation provides a history of modern Chinese design in four chapters, with the Lu Xun-Tao Yuanqing collaboration at its core. The investigation begins with the moment of culmination, wherein Lu Xun and Tao Yuanqing’s intersubjective dynamic allowed for evocative yet inscrutable book cover designs to be created. In the new medium of design, the writer’s anxiety regarding the inadequacy of language converged with the artist’s desire for ambiguity in art. The critical analysis then moves back to earlier instances of design and examines how the history of design in China was inflected by the World Exposition, Japan, art education, and commercial art. The inquiry finally moves forward to the discussion of Tao Yuanqing’s art and design’s relationship with a range of discursive fields in aesthetics and literary criticism, including modern notions of beauty, childlikeness, empathy, the native soil movement, cosmopolitanism, symbolism, and ambiguity in art. This part reveals how Tao Yuanqing’s innovations ironically endorsed while simultaneously subverting contemporary interpretive efforts.

Abstract:
This PhD provides the first organized view of art therapy education in Australia. It focuses on the theories that are used in this specialized teaching and learning process. It evolved from the authors’ immersion in the field as a migrant art therapy educator to Australia from the UK and a desire to be reflexive on this experience. The research questions aimed to discover the field of art therapy education in Australia: to find out what theories and practices were taught; and where the theoretical influences were coming from, in order to develop understanding of this emerging field. Positioned as a piece of qualitative research a bricolage of methods were used to gather and analyse information from several sources (literature, institutional sources, and key participants, including the author) on the theories and practices of art therapy training programs in Australia. This also included investigating other places in the world shown to be influential (USA and UK). The bricolage approach (McLeod, 2006) included: phenomenology; hermeneutics; semi-structured interviews; practical evaluation (Patton, 1982, 1990/2002); autoethnography (Ellis & Bochner, 2000); heuristic (Moustakas, 1990); and visual methodologies (Kapitan, 2010). These were used to develop a body of knowledge in the form of institution/program profiles, educator profiles, country profiles and an autoethnographic contribution using visual processes. Epistemologically, the project is located in a paradigm of personal knowledge and subjectivity which emphasizes the importance of personal experience and interpretation. The findings contribute knowledge to support the development of art therapy education and the profession in Australia, towards the benefit, health and wellbeing of people in society. The findings show a diverse and multi-layered field of hybrid views and innovative approaches held within seven programs in the public university and private sectors. It was found that theories and practices are closely linked and that theoretical views have evolved from the people who teach the programs, location, professional contexts (health, arts, education, social, community) and the prevailing views within these contexts, which are driven by greater economic, socio-political forces and neo-liberal agendas. The university programs generally teach a range of the major theories of psychotherapy underpinned with a psychodynamic or humanistic perspective. Movement towards a more integrative and eclectic approach was found. This was linked to being part of more general masters programs and economic forces. The private sector programs are more distinctly grounded in a particular theoretical perspective or philosophical view. Key words distilled from the profiles included: conflict, transpersonal, survival through art, pedagogy, epistemology, theory driven by context and mental health. Important issues for art therapy education were identified as: the position and emphasis on art; working with the therapy/education tension; the gender imbalance in the profession; Indigenous perspectives; intercultural issues and difference. The horizons of the field revealed the importance of developing the profile of the profession, reconciling differences towards a more inclusive view and the growth of research. A trend towards opportunities in the social, education and community areas was found, driven by the increasing presence of discourses on arts and wellness.

Abstract:
The studio glass movement first arose in the United States in the early 1950s, and was characterized by practitioners who wanted to divorce glass from its industrial associations and promote it as a fine arts medium. This movement began in a few cities in the eastern part of the country, and in Los Angeles, but gradually emerged as an art form strongly associated with the city of Seattle and the Puget Sound region. This research studies the emergence and growth of the studio glass movement in the Puget Sound region from 1970 to 2003. It examines how glass artists and Seattle's urban elites interacted and worked separately to build the support structures and "art world" that provided learning and mentoring opportunities, workspaces, artistic validation, audience development, critical and financial support, which helped make glass a signature Puget Sound art form, and the role that artist social networks, social capital, cultural capital and cultural policy played in sustaining this community. In particular, the research seeks to explore the factors that nourish a new art form and artist community in second-tier cities that do not have the substantial cultural and economic support structures found in the "arts super cities" such as Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco. This study contributes to the growing literature on artist communities, and the roles played by social capital, cultural capital, urban growth coalitions and policy at different stages of community development. Results can assist policymakers in formulating policies that incorporate the arts as a form of community development.

The literature on the stained glass windows installed in the eight oculi of the drum of Santa Maria del Fiore are mainly found in the monographs of the four artists that provided the cartoons--Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Paolo Uccello, and Andrea del Castagno. Few studies have focused on the program in its entirety. This thesis will attempt to provide a more thorough understanding of the program. Analysis of the primary documents reveals how the windows functioned as part of the building and its liturgical and public life. In particular, the central argument is that Donatello's Coronation of the Virgin was a substitute for an altarpiece and the seven other windows act as subsidiary scenes that reinforce the primary window and its political and theological agenda.

Founded in 1851, the Stourbridge School of Art offered instruction in drawing, art and design to students engaged in industries, especially glass. Using social history methodology and primary sources such as Government reports, local newspapers and school records, this thesis explores the school’s development from 1850 to 1905 and explicates its relationships with the local glass industry. Within the context of political, economic, social and cultural forces, the school contributed to the town’s civic culture and was supported by gentry, clergy and industrialists. The governing Council held public meetings and art exhibitions and dealt with management issues. Working class men attended evening classes. Women from wealthy families attended morning classes. This thesis argues that a fundamental disconnect existed between the school’s purpose (art instruction to train designers) and its instruction (basic drawing and fine art). The school enrolled men employed in glass decorating but few from glass manufacturing. Classes reflected the South Kensington curriculum, and the art masters were unaware of the design needs of industry. Glass manufacturing firms provided modest financial support but did not encourage employees to attend, creating frustration for the Council. In contrast, similar schools in Brierley Hill and Wordsley were well-supported by the glass industry.

The relationship with nature through art has been explored as a two fold bond. The first considers a relationship with nature via art and science, where the history and contemporary application of scientific illustration in art is explored; while the second explores past and present connections with nature via art and the landscape, particularly the panoramic tradition. Historically these relationships have predominately been about dominating nature, mans dominion over the land. Science was seen as the only authority, while our relationships with the land in art, positioned the viewer at a commanding distance above and over the land, as seen in the post colonial panoramic tradition. In contrast, -The Coorong Series- explores a lived history with nature rather than the historical role of dominance. -The Coorong Series" explores a relationship of knowledge, understanding, and the experience of nature; through two parts. The first combines art and science in -The Coorong Specimen Series', to explore the facts and knowledge that science has provided about certain plants, birds and marine life from the Coorong. Inspiration has been derived from 19thC scientific illustrations and the lyrical prints of the Coorong by Australian Artist John Olsen. Part two explores the immersive experience of the iconic landscape in ???The Coorong Landscape Series" providing a relationship that seeks to understand the functionality of the location and to celebrate the unique beauty of this diverse region. Inspiration has been gained from the landscapes by l8th and 19th C artists John Constable and Claude Monet, along with landscapes by contemporary artists, John Walker and Mandy Martin. Through aesthetic notions such as scientific illustration, panoramic landscape, immersive scale, the collection of work, an expressionistic use of paint, and labeling of each piece like a museum display. -The Coorong landscape series" provides an exploration of a region that immerses the viewer in an experience of the location. The series portrays a relationship with nature through art that educates the viewer about The Coorong region. Connections are made between the land, birds, plants, fish, and human interaction; which results in an ecological consideration of the Coorong. Ultimately it is the educational experience that art provides allowing the viewer to explore a plethora of relationships within nature, and to explore how these relationships have changed or continue to exist within this era.

This study examines the art practices and management of the National Art Galleries of Australia and New Zealand in the period between the wars, 1918-1939.It does so in part to account for the pervading conservatism and narrow corridors of aesthetic acceptability evident in their acquisitions and in many of their dealings. It aims to explore the role of Britishness, through an examination of the influence of the London Royal Academy of Art, within theses emerging official art institutions. This study argues that the dominant artistic ideology illustrated in these National Gallery collections was determined by a social elite, which was, at its heart, British. Its collective taste was predicated on models established in Great Britain and on traditions and on connoisseurship. This visual instruction in the British ideal of culture, as seen through the Academy, was regarded as a worthy aspiration, one that was at once both highly nationalistic and also a tool of Empire unity. This ideal was nationalistic in the sense that it marked the desire of these Boards to claim for the nation membership of the world's civil society, whilst also acknowleging that the vehicle to do so was through an enhanced alliance with British art and culture. The ramifications of an Empire-first aesthetic model were tremendous. The model severely constrained taste in domestic art, limited the participation of indigenous peoples and shaped the reception of modernism.

Australian artist Christian Waller nee Yandell (1894-1954) created artworks that unified her aesthetic and spiritual values. The technical and expressive brilliance of her work across a range of art media - drawing, painting, illustration, printmaking, stained glass and mosaic - makes it worthy of focused scholarly attention. Important influences on her practice included Pre-Raphaelitism, Art Deco and the Celtic Revival. Her spirituality was informed by a range of orthodox and alternative systems of belief, including: Christianity, Theosophy, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the international Peace Mission Movement. Acting as an emissary, she included personal symbols - especially the sun, the moon, stars and flowers - in her artworks to encourage spiritual contemplation. In this thesis, I argue that Waller harnessed the decorative and expressive potential of these movements - along with a commitment to Arts and Crafts values - to develop a personal set of symbols that expressed her sense of the spiritual. This encompassed the harmony of word, image and message, which underscored her work. It is for this reason that I locate Waller within the international discourse of spiritual art. Despite her remarkable talents across media and the distinctive quality of her art, Waller has always occupied a peripheral position within Australian art and art history. Even when she is included in significant books and exhibitions, most often it is in relation to her hand-printed book 'The Great Breath: A Book of Seven Designs' (1932) and her relationship with her husband, fellow artist Napier Waller. Key aims of this thesis are to highlight the breadth and depth of Waller's art practice and to demonstrate that she made important contributions to Australian art and to art that addresses the sacred.This thesis introduces a number of Waller's artworks, stories and personal ephemera into scholarship, making a comprehensive study of the artist possible for the first time. It makes a major contribution to scholarship on the artist, especially in relation to the spiritual values that underpinned her practice, as expressed in the key symbols that are identified. By extension, it contributes a more nuanced understanding of art produced between the First and Second World Wars to Australian art history and to scholarship on art that addresses the sacred.

Arena Theatre Company’s Eat Your Young is examined as an intrinsic case study. The aim is to investigate the role of a director in the creation of an original multi-media theatre production designed for young people. The study explores the current social, political and cultural position of young people and argues that they are viewed and portrayed as a marginalised “other”. The history of Arena Theatre Company is documented in relation to the development of Theatre in Education from its British roots to the Company’s current emphasis on contemporary artists exploring the possibilities of multi-art form technology. The development of multi-media usage in theatre over the past century is outlined in order to gain an understanding of Arena’s place within this technological experimentation. Utilising ethnographic methodology, including participant observation, “unstructured” interactive interviews and the construction of participant monologues, the creative rehearsal and planning process of Eat Your Young is chartered over a five month period. The outcomes of the study confirm the literature relating to the qualities of a good director: they are leadership, vision and the ability to collaborate. The metaphor chief architect is coined to describe the central figure of the director, Rosemary Myers. The case study discusses the development of a Company culture where artists work in an intensive social and interactive environment and it identifies the unique pressures and individual responsibility of the role of director.

In this thesis, I will examine pattern making in art practice from two cultural perceptions, Slavic and Australian. Existing differences between the two cultural backgrounds will be used to debate how pattern is understood by the viewer or practiced by an artist in a particular chosen environment. The central argument focuses on pattern as a decorator and/or a narrator. I will examine the outcomes and changes in narrative pattern according to cultural context and exchange. By introducing Slavic pattern into contemporary (Australian) art practice, I examine how traditional cultural values and functions change. La culture australienne de cette période a souvent été décrite comme isolée, voire même « en quarantaine », caractérisée par son acceptation tardive du modernisme. Bien qu’à cette époque la Grande-Bretagne accorde davantage d’indépendance et d’autonomie à ses dominions, l’Australie cherche à maintenir des liens culturels et impériaux en s’identifiant exclusivement à la Grande-Bretagne. Ainsi, pendant cette période, la majorité des Australiens considèrent toujours l’Angleterre comme mère patrie et Londres attire de nombreux artistes australiens expatriés. Pour reprendre les termes de Daniel Thomas, historien de l’art australien, l’Australie développe une identité culturelle dite « bi-hémisphérique Anglo-australienne », imprégnée de nationalisme, de conservatisme et de valeurs patriarcales. Cette thèse examine les échanges artistiques entre l’Australie et la Grande-Bretagne pendant les années 1920 et 1930 et met en lumière les complexités de l’identification culturelle. This thesis explores the cultural and artistic influence of Britain in Australia, or the Britishness of the Australian character, from the years directly following the end of World War I until 1941. Australia during this period was often described as an isolated, or a “quarantined”, culture characterised by its delay in accepting modernism. Despite Britain ceding more independence and autonomy to its dominions at the time, Australia sought to maintain its cultural and imperial bond, identifying exclusively with Britain in a number of ways. For instance, many Australians still considered Britain to be “Home”, while London continued to attract expatriate artists from Australia. In the words of Australian art historian Daniel Thomas, Australia developed a “bi-hemispheric Anglo-Australian cultural identity”, which was marked by nationalism, conservatism and masculinism. This thesis examines the artistic exchanges between Australia and Britain in the 1920s and 1930s, shedding light on the complexities of cultural identification. It considers in particular the fact that such nationalistic historiography of Australian art has denied women’s agency in defining Australian art and identity. The national collections of British art, as well as the mechanisms of the circulation of modern British art in Australia, are closely examined to demonstrate the dualism of Australian cultural identity and the marginalisation of women within this history, not only as artists but also as art patrons. This thesis discusses the experience of Australian expatriates in England, considering how they sought to integrate into the British art scene. In doing so, it brings to the fore the significance of expatriatism as a concept that shaped both Australian and British art historiographies. Finally, it conceptualises the achievements of two Australian expatriate women, Edith May Fry and Clarice Zander, who, as exhibition curators, played a crucial role in disseminating modernism in Australia and defining Australia’s cultural identity during the interwar period. Introduction: I find myself in the pantry, cleaning shelves, in the laundry, water slopping around my elbows, at the washing line, pegging clothes. I watch myself clean shelves, wash, peg clothes. These are the rhythms that comfort. That postpone. (The Painted Woman, Sue Woolfe, p. 170) As a marginalised group in Australian art history and society, women artists possess a valuable and vital craft tradition which inevitably influences all aspects of their arts practice. Installation art, which has its origins in the craft tradition, has only been acknowledged in the art mainstream this decade; yet evolved in the home of the 1950s. The social policies of this era are well documented for their insistence on women remaining in the home in order to achieve personal success in their lives. This cultural oppressiveness paradoxically resulted in a revolution in women's art in the environment to which they were confined. Women's creative energies were diverted and sublimated into the home, resulting in aesthetic statements of individuality in home decoration. As an art movement, women's installation art in the home provided the similar structures to formally recognised art schools in the mainstream, and include: informal networks and training (schools); matriarchs within the community who were knowledgable in craft traditions and techniques and shared these with younger women (mentorships); visiting other homes and providing constructive advice (critiques); and women's magazines and glory boxes (art journals and sketch books). A re-examination of this vital period in women's art history will reveal the social policies and cultural influences which insidiously undermined women's art, which was based on craft traditions.

Abstract:
Having a personal connection through several family members to the life and work of Ngaanyatjarra Elder Mr Ward, I found his death in custody in outback Western Australia unsettling and incomprehensible. As the circumstances of his death were revealed, I became aware of glaring omissions in the telling of his story and the circumstances that led to his death. Through my engagement with the subsequent media reporting, official documents and personal conversations, I recognised a profound lack of understanding of difference and otherness within a shared history and space in Western Australia. The initial aim of my project was to investigate the incomprehensible through the lens of Ngaanyatjarra Elder Mr Ward’s death; however, ethically, this proved a difficult path to negotiate. Through my research, I came to understand that the continued use of the dominant language of the coloniser, which is embedded in social practices and academic discourse is, in part, continuing to perpetuate white privilege. The ethical problems raised inspired me to develop an approach, which although oblique, would nevertheless enable fresh insight into otherness and difference in a multi-cultural society. The particular concern of this practice-led research project is not to exploit the trauma of others but to raise awareness of this social space through my work, giving rise to new understandings and possible relations. This research gathered key texts from Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno, to facilitate the transfer of the written form of Denkbild, a literary device manipulating the codes of language to visualise the process of thought, into a painting practice. The Denkbild (thought-image) is a Euro-centric genre of exploratory philosophical writing, crafted in response to a society witnessing tremendous change as a result of the devastating impact of WWI and WWII. Through this creative project, the challenge was to re-activate the Denkbild through painting and accompanying text to investigate deaths in custody and interrogate the connected issues of ethics, politics and inequality, which is written into the shared spaces of Western Australia. The Denkbild is then developed further with the addition of Henri Lefebvre’s threedimensional spatial application of dialectical thinking and the creative practice of selected Australian artists. Through this addition, the binary dialectical framework of the Denkbild is expanded to reflect contemporary thinking on the concept of space as a social product. This perspective emerges to enable fresh insight into Aboriginal understandings of space as representing an ‘eternal now’, such that a mutual understanding of space is manifested. My painting practice reflects and informs this transition, as I moved from the painting studio to selected locations to record information and experiences that developed my research position. To achieve the project’s aims, I engaged in reflexivity and praxis as the methodological tools to guide my research. Through painting, my research extended across interdisciplinary fields including visual arts practices, philosophical history and literature, to interrogate a spatial dynamic, revealing marginalised insights and connecting interrelationships between sites. For the purpose of this research, the paintings, exhibitions and exegesis function on two levels: as an avenue into mediation of Western Australian culture and as a methodological approach to visual art practice. My research culminated in the exhibition, Ghostcards of WA 2017 at the Spectrum Project Space, ECU, Mount Lawley. This project is significant as it renews the Denkbild to further the unique relationship between conceptual and representational categories that binds together experience, object and practice to form an interrogative tool for critical inquiry. In the application of this method to a Western Australian context, new thinking is encouraged through the inclusive reading of space and the collapsing of misunderstandings perpetuated in historicism through a shared recognition of the inherent value of space/sites which— far from being incomprehensible, reactive, nostalgic and solipsistic—are comprehensible, active, prescient, abundant and social.

À partir du fonds inédit du musée des Arts décoratifs de Paris consacré à Jean Luce (1895-1964), cette thèse éclaire l’histoire du service de table français entre 1910 et 1960. Bien que rarement considéré par les historiens de l’art, cet objet du quotidien reflète pourtant remarquablement les évolutions des arts visuels de ce demi-siècle. La création de Luce témoigne ainsi de toute la diversité du style Art déco puis de l’avènement du design dans l’immédiat après-guerre. Par ailleurs, il a réinventé le métier de créateur-éditeur de services de table, en dessinant des formes et des motifs aussi bien pour la céramique que pour la verrerie, en les faisant fabriquer par une chaîne industrielle et en les diffusant lui-même dans son magasin parisien de la rue La Boétie. Si son travail constitue notre point de départ, nous avons également considéré le rôle des dessinateurs industriels, des manufacturiers de porcelaine, de faïence et de verre ainsi que des commerçants car tous ces acteurs participent aux choix esthétiques effectués dans le cadre d’une production de masse. This thesis sheds light on the history of the French tableware between 1910 and 1960 by examining the unexplored collection devoted to Jean Luce (1895-1964) at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs of Paris. These everyday objects are rarely studied by art historians, even though they remarkably capture the evolution of visual arts over that half-century. Luce’s creations exemplify the diversity of the Art Deco style in the inter-war period and the advent of design in the immediate post-war period. Furthermore, Luce reinvented the figure of the creator-editor specialized in this field by designing forms and motifs for both crockery and glassware, having them produced by an industrial chain and distributing them personally in his Parisian store on rue La Boétie. His work is our starting point, but we are also interested in the work of industrial designers, manufacturers of porcelain, earthenware and glass as well as tableware retailers, all of whom, in a mass production context, influenced aesthetic choices. From this, we look at how a style develops and spreads as we study the stages of creation, production and distribution of the tableware. More broadly, the evolution of these consumer goods was shaped by new manners of socializing and other changes in daily life. Consequently, our survey uses, in addition to the tools of art history, those of socio-cultural history

This thesis explores facets of Scottish identity via the decorative work of Douglas Strachan. Nations and nationalism remain extraordinarily potent phenomena in the contemporary world and this work seeks to examine aspects of Scottish nationhood and cultural identity through Strachan's evocation of history, folklore, religion and myth. It has been argued that these are the chief catalysts for enabling people to define and shape their understanding of themselves and their place within society. Cultural identity is often understood as a passive form of nationalism which is remote from its political counterpart. Yet there are strong arguments to counter this belief. This thesis addresses some of the issues raised by such arguments and adopts an ethno-symbolic approach in order to re-evaluate Strachan's work, and that of his contemporaries. The thesis also develops the theoretical and contextual debates concerning the decorative arts in general and stained glass in particular in order to raise awareness of its merits and its role within our society.

Abstract:
American composer David Kechley was profoundly impacted by a 1990 trip to the Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan. The composer describes the finely raked, small white stones in the midst of fifteen large rocks in the Japanese Zen garden as "planned randomness." Kechley's inaugural composition for saxophone-guitar duo, In the Dragon's Garden, reflects his experience at the Ryoan-ji Temple. The use of minimalistic compositional techniques without literal repetition in the work represents a departure from the first generation of Minimalist composers, such as LaMonte Young, Steve Reich, Phillip Glass, and John Adams. An analysis of minimalistic compositional elements, combined with an interview with the commissioning ensemble, the Ryoanji Duo, provides insights into the interpretation and preparation of this complex work. Furthermore, this document contains helpful information pertinent to the saxophone-guitar duo. Details on balance and amplification, orchestration, and collaboration with the composer will supply performers and composers with essential knowledge needed to participate in this growing musical medium.

Esquisser le portrait de la commaunauté des peintres lyonnais, entre le début du règne de Louis XI (1461) et la crise de la fin des années 1520, a constitué le présupposé de cette recherche. Le recours aux sources (comptables, fiscales et ecclésiastiques) s’est révélé indispensable à l’étude prosopographique et à une démarche d’histoire sociale de l’art, permettant la localisation des peintres, de leurs ateliers, les quelques filiations, leur place enfin (fortune et position sociale) dans la cité. Mais au-delà de cette première approche, l’étude des commanditaires, personnages capitals de la production artistique, a permis de définir plus finement le visage de la pratique picturale lyonnaise. Entre notables, Consulat, ecclésiastiques et rois, les activités de commande dans la ville ont souligné l’absence de grands chantiers et de grandes commandes dans ces décennies de prospérité croissante. Ce sont donc les fêtes, au premier rang desquelles les entrées royales et solennelles, qui mobilisent les forces économiques, littéraires et évidemment artistiques. To sketch the portrait of the painters’ community of Lyon, between the beginning of the reign of Louis XI (1461) and the crisis of the end of 1520s, was the presupposition of this research. The appeal to sources (accounts, taxes and from ecclesiastic origin) showed itself essential to the study of painters and to the approach of social history of the art, allowing the location of them, their workshops, the some filiations, their place finally (fortune and social position) in the city. But beyond this first approach, the study of the patrons, major characters of the artistic production, allowed to define more finely the face of the pictorial practice of Lyon. Between notables, consuls, Consulate, clerics and kings, the activities of command in the city underlined the absence of big construction sites and big orders in these decades of increasing prosperity. They are thus the festivals, in the front row of which the royal and solemn entries, which mobilize the economic, literary and obviously artistic strengths. The study of the protagonists of these royal and urban ceremonies as spread themes allows to characterize in a more precise way the articulation between artists, patrons and city as to deepen the knowledge on the practice of the painters, indeed better known by this way

This document critically reflects on the production process of these films to accompany their submission for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Publication at Griffith University. It finds that a contemporary tendency towards 'post-industrial' conditions allows an observational film-maker to negotiate a critical inter-dependence rather than a romantically conceived 'independence' traditional to the genre. La lumière représente un thème récurrent dans A la recherche du temps perdu – on note en particulier l’importance de la lanterne magique dès l’ouverture du roman ; elle sert fréquemment de métaphore à la création artistique : aussi ai-je choisi d’étudier ce motif tant du point de vue des manifestations de la lumière elle-même que de celui de sa dimension symbolique dans l’œuvre, m’appuyant sur des analyses lexicologiques et stylistiques. Je travaille dans un premier temps sur les mots de la lumière créatrice qui regroupent le substantif lumière lui-même dont je propose une analyse sémasiologique, ainsi que certains de ses parasynonymes (entre autres : soleil, lune, jour, clarté, lueur, éclairage, ombre, reflet, rayon…) par une recherche de paradigmes de substitution dans l’œuvre. Puis, dans un deuxième temps, j’observe si dans leur structure même les phrases de Proust intègrent des propriétés de la lumière (phrases trajectoires à l’instar d’un rayon lumineux ; phrases transvertébration ; phrases vitraux), puisque les notions d’optique et de fragmentation apparaissent essentielles dans la vision du monde de l’auteur. Je dégage enfin des figures (métaphore, syllepse et antanaclase dans leur rôle stylistique, ainsi que certains fonctionnements de la coordination et) que j’analyse plus spécialement dans la mesure où elles réalisent dans un cadre plus large que celui de la phrase des caractéristiques de la lumière ; on découvre alors que l’art photographique et ses techniques peuvent éclairer de façon métaphorique l’art de Proust, l’auteur de La Recherche en appelant de façon de plus en plus insistante au cours du roman à l’image du développement photographique
Light is a recurring theme throughout Remembrance of Things Past - the magic lantern's importance is to be noted from the novel's beginning. Light is often used as a metaphor for artistic creation. Thus, I have chosen to study this motif focusing on light-induced patterns as well as how it becomes symbolic in the context of the novel. I will use lexicological and stylistic analysis to do so.I have first worked on words connected to creative light for which I will propose a semiasiological analysis including of the substantive light itself. I have also focused on some its para synonymous terms such as sun, moon, day, brightness, glow, lighting, shade, glint, beam...by looking for paradigms used instead in the novel.Secondly, I have examined whether some of light's properties – path sentences like rays of light ; transvertebration, stained glass window sentences - are part of the structure of Proust's sentences, since focus and fragmentation structure the author' insight into his world.Finally, I have selected literary devices - metaphors, syllepses and antanaclases in their stylistic function as well as some uses of the coordination conjunction and – and analysed them in so far as they convey the characteristics of light beyond the structure of sentences. The art of photography and its techniques are then shown metaphorically shedding light and interplaying with the art of Proust, the author of Remembrance of Things Past, progressively conjuring the image of photographice development process

Abstract:
Although many texts discuss studio glass blowing in Australia, few focus on the South Australian situation and even fewer are written by studio glass blowers themselves. As a studio glass blower, I bring to this research experiential knowledge of practice to offer new insights into studio glass blowing. The study accesses knowledge that is implicit, embodied and tacit; knowledge derived from living and working within a particular community. In using this knowledge, I highlight the importance of both financial survival and the development of practice in creating a practitioner's perspective of studio glass blowing in South Australia. The study is designed as an ethnography. This incorporated a review of the literature and images found in published texts; interview and questionnaire data; anecdotal narratives and familiarity with the South Australian glass blowing community; and tacit knowledge of glass blowing practice, glass blowing skills and techniques. This tacit knowledge was accessed through an auto-ethnographic investigation of re-making the selected artefacts. The selection of these artefacts was based on my personal knowledge of glass blowing processes, first hand relationships with individual glassblowers, observation of artefacts and prior experience of working as a studio glass blower.

Glass has been made and used for centuries but South African artists, isolated for the last three decades, are only now becoming aware of the potential of hot or warm glass as an art medium. In antiquity glass objects were created using various processes but the 'factory' tradition began with the discovery of the blowing iron in the first century AD. The invention of the tank furnace in the late 1950s revolutionised modem production, enabling individual artists to make glass in private studios without blowing teams. The research describes ancient.. glassmaking processes and indicates how they have been explored, adapted and used by contemporary artists world wide, challenging craft orientated paradigms, and proving that glass is a viable and important sculpture medium. The practical research demonstrates the application of many processes and relates technical issues to sculptural concepts which are realized through the physical and material properties of glass.

Aboriginal arts practices in the southeast of Australia have, since the early years of colonisation, been rarely considered within the realm of authentic Aboriginal arts practices. Such attitudes were a reflection of the colonial encounter and associated attempts to assimilate the Aboriginal population with the White. This thesis explores Aboriginal arts practices and asserts that there has always been Aboriginal art in the southeast and that, despite the overwhelming effects of colonisation, the work of Aboriginal artists provides a distinct and definite counter-history to that endorsed by the dominant culture. Using published historical and contemporary accounts and recent interviews from Aboriginal artists and arts workers, this thesis investigates the continuation of the knowledge and practice of southeast Australian Aboriginal art and its connection to culture, identity and wellbeing. It explores the corresponding adaptations and changes to these practices as Aboriginal people contended with the ever-expanding European occupation of the region from 1834 onwards.
This project adopted a collaborative research methodology, where members of the Aboriginal arts community were consulted throughout the project in order to develop a study which had meaning and value for them. The collaborative approach combined an analysis of historical data along with the stories collected from participants. By privileging the Aboriginal voice as legitimate primary source material, alternative ways of exploring the history of Aboriginal art were possible. Although the story of Aboriginal art in the southeast is also one of tensions and paradoxes, where changes in arts practices frequently positioned art, like the people themselves, outside the domain of the ‘real’, the findings of this project emphasise that arts practices assist people with connecting and in some cases reconnecting with their communities. Aboriginal art in the southeast is an assertion of identity and wellbeing and reflects the dynamic nature of Aboriginal culture in southeast Australia.

Abstract:
This thesis examines art critical writing on contemporary Australian art published between 1960 and 1988 through the lens of its engagement with its location, looking at how it directly or indirectly engaged with the issues arising from Australia's so-called peripheral position in relation to the would-be hegemonic centre. I propose that Australian art criticism is marked by writers' acceptances of the apparent explanatory necessity of constructing appropriate nationalist discourses, evident in different and succeeding types of nationalist agendas, each with links to external, non-artistic agendas of nation and politics. I will argue that the nationalist parameters and trajectory of Australian art writing were set by Australian art historian, Bernard Smith, and his book Australian Painting, 1788-1960 (1962) and that the history of Australian art writing from the 1960s onwards was marked by a succession of nationalist rather than artistic agendas formed, in turn, by changing experiences of the Cold War. Through this, I will begin to provide a critical framework that has not effectively existed so far, due to the binary terror of regionalism versus internationalism.
Chapter One focuses on Bernard Smith and the late 1950s and early 1960s Australian intellectual context in which Australian Painting 1788-1960 was published. I will argue that, although it can be claimed that Australia was a postcolonial society, the most powerful political and social influence during the 1950s and 1960s was the Cold War and that this can be identified in Australian art criticism and Australian art. Chapter Two discusses art theorist, Donald Brook. Brook is of particular interest because he kept his art writing separate from his theories of social and political issues, focussing on contemporary art and artists. I argue that Brook's failure to engage with questions of nation and Australian identity directly ensured that he remained a respected but marginal figure in the history of Australian art writing. Chapter Three returns to the centre/periphery issue and examines the art writing of Patrick McCaughey and Terry Smith. Each of these writers dealt with the issue of the marginality of Australian art but neither writer questioned the validity of the centre/periphery model.
Chapter Four examines six Australian art magazines that came into existence in the 1970s, a decade of high hopes and deep disillusionment. The chapter maps two shifts of emphasis in Australian art writing. First, the change from the previous preoccupation with provincialism to pluralist social issues such as feminism, and second, the resulting gravitation of individual writers into ideological alliances and/or administrative collectives that founded, ran and supported magazines that printed material that focused on (usually Australian) art in relation to specific social, cultural or political issues. Chapter Five concentrates on the Australian art magazine, Art & Text, and Paul Taylor, its founder and editor. Taylor and his magazine were at the centre of a new Australian attempt to solve the provincialism problem and thus break free of the centre/periphery model.

In the final two decades of the twentieth century Australian society was preoccupied with its own history. So ubiquitous was this interest, that bookshops were crammed with popular histories and historical fictions, TV networks aired historical re-enactments and devoted whole series to its exploration and re-creation. In part, this increased awareness of history was stimulated by the 200-year anniversary of white settlement simultaneously celebrated by many non-Indigenous Australians and condemned by Indigenous protestors. Throughout the 1990s the debate over historical fact and its place within society- or the 'history wars' - took centre stage moving beyond academic circles and into political and public discourse. At the heart of this debate was what Bain Attwood called the 'new history', which incorporated the hitherto absent perspectives of Indigenous Australians. This new version of history examined discrepancies between dominant settler accounts of historical events and those provided by Indigenous people, often in the form of oral testimony. A more vocal Indigenous population also forced these new perspectives on Australian history into being, as increased calls for land rights recognition and social justice became prominent. The debate was so prominent that it permeated many areas of Australian society, the visual arts provides one such example. This thesis is concerned with how the popularisation of history was contended in the visual arts. I argue that Australian artists have used appropriation as an effective means of engaging in a discourse on colonialism; of communicating with the past, and of ensuring that that past remained a highly visible concern of the present Through its reliance on existing images, appropriation enables artists to condense the space between the quoted image and their new work. It therefore demands that the quoted image be seen as a concern of the present. This strategy was implemented by a significant number of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian practitioners during the last two decades of the twentieth century. Moreover, it provides an important point of intersection between the artistic practice of Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. Rather than seeking to document the history of appropriation in Australia, this thesis is concerned with highlighting how appropriation has become the basis of a critical commentary on historical narratives of colonialism.

The artist Hans Heysen is closely associated with the South Australian regional environment, which featured as the subject matter of his most celebrated works. At the same time, however, he also rapidly established a national reputation, achieving critical and commercial success in the interstate art worlds of Melbourne and Sydney. This dissertation investigates the significant role of Heysen’s art world networks in establishing, shaping and maintaining his career and reputation. Most of the existing scholarship on Heysen has either been biographical or concerned with analysing the style and subject matter of his paintings. While previous authors have alluded to the importance of his networks, these have not been their central focus of study. Similarly, Heysen’s ties to the urban Australian art worlds where his works were exhibited, reviewed and sold have been little researched. Heysen’s networks encompassed fellow artists, art critics, publishers, dealers, collectors and museum trustees and directors. Due to his geographical isolation written correspondence played an essential role in his long-distance career management, with the letters he exchanged providing valuable insights into the importance of his networks. Consequently, this dissertation has involved intensive archival research, cross-referencing the archives of Heysen and his correspondents, together with studying historic exhibition catalogues, art magazines and published reviews. The interpretation of this material has been informed by two complementary conceptual frameworks. The first is Howard Becker’s conceptualisation of art (and art world success) as the product of collaborative activity. This has been utilised when analysing the specific operations of Heysen’s networks. The second is Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of a ‘Field of Cultural Production,’ a metaphorical, changing space in which cultural agents compete for symbolic capital. These ideas have been employed to examine the structure of the Australian art world and the construction of reputation. This research demonstrates the essential role of Heysen’s art world networks in representing and advancing his interests. The support of key associates enabled Heysen to withstand the threats to his career presented by anti-German sentiments during the First World War, the impact of the Depression on the art market and the ascendency of modernism. While he generally benefited from his networks, the entrenched conservatism or overt commercial concerns of some of Heysen’s associates proved detrimental to his reputation. This dissertation shows that while Heysen’s traditionalist style and subject matter did not change dramatically over the course of his lengthy career, there were considerable shifts in the way in which he displayed, promoted and sold his works which reflected broader changes in the Australian art world. Similarly, perceptions of Heysen progressed from regarding him as an innovator in the Edwardian period, to an establishment figure during the interwar decades and finally as the last representative of a past generation. Heysen is shown to have been a strategically-minded professional who closely monitored both his own critical fortunes and those of other Australian artists.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses a gap in research regarding South Australian china painting. Although china painting has been practised in Australia for the last 120 years and is held in major Australian collections, it has been little researched and then in a minor role associated with ceramics and studio potters, or as women’s art/craft. The china painters too, have been little researched. My research identifies the three ‘highs’ of the changing fortunes of china painting, and how the practice survived in between. I argue that it was first taught in the city’s School of Design, Painting and Technical Art in 1894 as a skill for possible industrial employment, due to the initiative of School Principal, Harry Pelling Gill. However china painting classes were discontinued by 1897 due to an economic depression and the fact that the anticipated industry did not eventuate. In 1906 china painting classes were reinstituted in the (re-named) Adelaide School of Art and teacher Laurence Howie was pivotal in that revival. China painting classes ceased during the First World War while Howie served overseas in the Australian Forces, but resumed in 1923 after his return and appointment as Principal of the (renamed) School of Arts and Crafts. The resulting change in the fortunes of china painting was the outcome of the School’s appropriate training in art and design, and I argue this enabled emerging professional female artists to confidently exhibit china painting alongside their fine art. I will devote a chapter to the important role of the South Australian Society of Arts in facilitating this important public exposure of china painting. The Second World War marked a decline in popularity of china painting. Chapter 5 traces its survival till it burst into popularity again in 1965. Further chapters describe china painting’s following meteoric rise in fortune and the role played by the South Australian teachers of the art/craft, few of whom had received formal art training. I argue that china painting became a conservative social craft, but nonetheless a serious hobby, pursued by married, middle-class women who strongly believed their work was art, not craft. I will point out how they were visited and influenced by entrepreneurial American teachers, politically active in the art/craft debate in the United States of America. Chapter 8 will chart the steps taken by Australian teachers in the 1980s to break from the American influence and regain an Australian identity in teachers’ organisations and iconography. I will describe the debates that ensued following experimental work exhibited by avant-garde Australian teachers to resolve the art/craft debate regarding china painting in Australia, and the difficulties of maintaining china painting momentum as the majority of practitioners became elderly women. This thesis identifies education of the practitioners as a key factor throughout South Australian china painting history as a way of better understanding the place of china painting within the decorative arts. China painting is currently in decline; nevertheless, as I will point out in my conclusion, there are several future pathways it could take. Only within recent decades have curators and writers shown an increased interest in women’s decorative arts, including china painting. It is timely to undertake research before existing documentation of china painting is lost.

Abstract:
The thesis provides a revaluation of the art of Australian women artists in the period 1900-1940. In the first instance, this study attempts to answer the question posed by a number of male historians: "Why were there so many succesful Australian women artists in the period between the two world wars?" My answer has involved the analysis of three major phenomena: 1. The women's emancipation movement which enfranchised women and gave them the key to education and subsequently to the professions. 2. The women artists of the early twentieth century were the direct benefactors of the women's movement, the confidence that the new woman acquired enabled her to continue her studies abroad for the first time in significant numbers. 3. Women artists became identified with modernism and also for their contribution to the arts and crafts movement. Critics have noted that there was a large proportion of women artists involved with various aspects of the modernist movement. The question has not been examined before in Australian art because there has not been any enquiry into their collective artistic genealogies, nor has the interconnectedness of much of their art been noticed before. When this is analysed, it becomes clear that women had a special affinity with aspects of modernism because of their gendered artistic education in the nineteenth century which rendered them particularly sensitive to some aspects of modernism. This is clear in most of the case studies of the women artists whose careers I examine here. My study has been conducted from the point of view established by certain feminist critics and art historians whose theories have provided an important perspective on the art of this period. This perspective is a necessary one, it hinges on the concepr of "difference" in women's artistic expression. This theory of "difference" also provides a parallel to the sociological study of women's liberation at the beginning of this century (the data for which IS provided in the Appendices at the end of the thesis). The theory of "difference" can be seen to link up with an analysis of gendered art education and thus facilitates an understanding of why it was that so many women readily pursued the criteria for modernist art.
