The thesis sets out to explore the enduring and widespread appeal of sunglasses in western popular culture as evident in the fields of fashion, film and advertising. The emergence of sunglasses as a fashion accessory is established through evidence from UK and US fashion magazines of the early Twentieth century, optical trade and professional journals and the collection of sunglasses and tinted spectacles held by the British Optical Association. The strong association in popular culture between sunglasses and contemporary notions of ‘cool’ is explored through analysis of images of sunglasses, consideration of their function as a ‘material agent’, existing histories and theories of ‘cool’, modernity and attendant changes to emotional culture, behaviour and personality. The relationship between sunglasses, vision and the gaze is also considered as the study explores the potential meanings of the shaded eye in these contexts. The study contributes to knowledge by providing a more detailed history of sunglasses emergence and transition to the status of fashion accessory than exists elsewhere and by using sunglasses as an object study (or fragment) from which the phenomenon of ‘cool’ can be examined. Existing perspectives on cool are shown to lack the usefully broad understanding of the appeal of ‘cool’ that sunglasses can provide, in so far as they draw together a number of aspects of cool in one object. The study concludes that this allows us to see both cool and sunglasses as demonstrative of a superior adaptation to the conditions of modernity – a value so desirable and broadly applicable as to help to explain not only the enduring appeal of sunglasses but the increasing significance of cool in western culture.

This dissertation charts the emergence of lesbian and gay film festivals in the United States and Canada, their meanings and politics, through the specific discursive contexts in which the festivals are embedded. I argue that while general international film festivals operate within a very well defined network, the added categories of minority sexuality and community crucially and fundamentally change the relationship of the films screened to the festival, films and festival to audience, and the festival to any network of distribution. The aim is then to explore those changes and differences through a comparative analysis of selected film festivals organized around categories of minority sexual identities. I argue that the lesbian and gay film festival poses a unique set of histories and structures that differ significantly from the general international film festival. The main case studies include festivals in Montreal, New York City, San Francisco and Toronto.<br>Cette thèse décrit l'émergence des festivals du cinéma lesbien et gai aux États-Unis et au Canada, leurs significations et leurs dimensions politiques, à travers les contextes discursifs particuliers dans lesquels les festivals sont intégrés. Je propose que, si les festivals internationaux à caractère général opèrent dans des réseaux très bien définis, dans le cas des festivals organisés sur la base des catégories de sexualités minoritaires et de leurs communautés, la relation des films projetés au festival, les films du festival et aux spectateurs et aux spectatrices, et le festival à n'importe quel réseau de distribution de films, changent fondamentalement. Le but de la thèse est alors d'explorer ces changements et ces différences à travers une analyse comparative de certains festivals de cinéma organisés autour de catégories d'identités sexuelles minoritaires. Je propose que les festivals du cinéma gai et lesbien offrent un ensemble unique d'histoires et de structures qui diffèrent fondamentalement de celles des grands festivals de film internationaux. Les cas principaux étudiés ici sont des festivals à Montréal, New York, San Francisco et Toronto.

Within the set of all vehicle crashes that occur annually, of intersection-related crashes are over-represented. The research conducted here uses an empirical approach to study driver behavior at intersections, in a naturalistic paradigm. A data-mining algorithm was used to aggregate the data from two different naturalistic databases to obtain instances of unprotected turns at the same intersection. Several dependent variables were analyzed which included visual entropy, mean-duration of glances to locations in the driver's view, gap-acceptance/rejection time. Kinematic dependent variables include peak/average speed, and peak longitudinal and lateral acceleration. Results indicated that visual entropy and peak speed differs amongst drivers of the three age-groups (older, middle-age, teens) in the presence of traffic in the intersecting streams while negotiating a left turn. Although not significant, but approaching significance, were differences in gap acceptance times, with the older driver accepting larger gaps compared to the younger teen drivers. Significant differences were observed for peak speed and average speed during a left turn, with younger drivers exhibiting higher values for both. Overall, this research has resulted in contribution towards two types of engineering application. Firstly, the analyses of traffic levels, gap acceptance, and gap non-acceptance represented exploratory efforts, ones that ventured into new areas of technical content, using newly available naturalistic driving data. Secondly, the findings from this thesis are among the few that can be used to inform the further development, refinement, and testing of technology (and training) solutions intended to assist drivers in making successful turns and avoiding crashes at intersections.<br>Master of Science

Syftet med denna undersökning är att undersöka hur glanceable feedback kan implementeras i aktivitetsenheter för hundar för att skapa en bättre användarupplevelse och minska den teknologiska störningen i kommunikationen mellan människa och hund. Tidigare studier visar att utvecklingen hos aktivitetsenheter för hundar är långt ifrån lika framgångsrik jämfört med den för aktivitetsenheter för människor (Ramokapane, van der Linden & Zamansky, 2019; Väätäjä et al. 2018; Zamansky; et al. 2019). Väätäjä, et al. (2018) har påpekat vikten av att teknologin bakom aktivitetsenheten, så som mobiltelefoner, inte ska komma mellan hundägaren och hunden. Den får inte agera som ett störningsmoment som distanserar kommunikation eller interaktion mellan hund och människa (Väätäjä et al. 2018). Detta är idag oundvikligt i dagens aktivitetsenheter för hundar då användaren är helt beroende av mobiltelefonens tillhörande applikation (Väätäjä et al. 2018). Genom frågeställningen (Hur kan glanceable feedback appliceras i aktivitetsenhet för hundar för att ge hundägaren direkt information om hundens aktivitet?) undersöks hur glanceable feedback kan appliceras i aktivitetsenheter för hundar och undvika att kommunikation mellan hund och ägare störs med tekniken. Resultatet är aktivitetsenheten Good Boy. Enheten är försedd med en display och ett mekaniskt hjul som byter mellan de olika kategorierna distans/steg, puls/kroppstemperatur, info/kontaktuppgifter och led/lampa.<br>The purpose of this study is to investigate how glanceable feedback can be implemented in activity units for dogs to create a better user experience and reduce the technological disruption in human-dog communication. Previous studies show that the development of activity units for dogs is far from as successful as activity units for humans (Ramokapane, van der Linden & Zamansky, 2019; Väätäjä et al. 2018; Zamansky et al. 2019). Väätäjä, et al. (2018) have pointed out the importance of the technology behind the activity, such as the mobile phone, unit not coming between the dog owner and the dog. It must not act as a disturbance that distances communication or interaction between dog and human (Väätäjä et al. 2018). This is inevitable in today's activity units for dogs as the user is completely dependent on the mobile phone's associated application (Väätäjä et al. 2018). The question (How can glanceable feedback be applied in an activity unit for dogs to give the dog owner direct information on the dog's activity?) Investigates how glanceable feedback can be applied in activity units for dogs and avoid that communication between dog and owner is disturbed by technology. The result is the Good Boy activity unit. The unit is equipped with a display and a mechanical wheel that switches between the different categories distance / step, pulse / body temperature, info /contact information and LED/lamp.

The 85th percentile off-road glances while performing three tasks on an in-vehicle system while driving in a simulator was investigated. The tasks were a radio task, a telephone task and a sound settings task which were performed at three occasions each. The distribution of 85th percentile off-road glance durations for each subject and task showed that durations differed between individuals rather than between tasks. It also turned out that durations longer than 2.00 seconds were not rare and 2 of 16 subjects had durations longer than 2.00 seconds in the radio task. Even though the distribution showed small differences between tasks on an individual level, differences on a group level were found between the tasks. A tendency of a learning effect was found, which implied a decrease in 85th percentile off-road glance durations as the tasks were performed at several occasions. A tendency of a floor effect in 85th percentile off-road glance durations, when the subjects are familiarized with tasks, was also found. Performance on a computerized trail-making test, measuring ability of visual search, motor speed and mental flexibility, was found not to be related with 85th percentile off-road glance durations.

Objectifs : Notre travail avait pour objectifs (i) d’évaluer le bénéfice dosimétrique et de prédire le bénéfice clinique d’une radiothérapie adaptative pour des cancers des voies aéro‐digestives supérieures, à la fois en termes de toxicité et de contrôle local, (ii) d’identifier les patients bons candidats à une stratégie de radiothérapie adaptative, et (iii) d’identifier le meilleur schéma de radiothérapie adaptative pour épargner les parotides. Matériels et méthodes : Le bénéfice dosimétrique a été évalué en utilisant les données de patients inclus dans une étude de phase III évaluant le bénéfice clinique d’une radiothérapie adaptative. La dose cumulée sans et avec radiothérapie adaptative a été estimée par des méthodes de recalage élastique. Une évaluation des différents algorithmes de recalage a été faite à la fois en termes de précision spatiale et d’impact sur la dose estimée. Des modèles de prédiction du risque de surdosage ont été développés en utilisant des modèles linéaires généralisées mixtes et une validation croisée par leave‐one‐out. L’évaluation de différents schémas de radiothérapie adaptative (en termes de fréquence et de nombre) a été réalisée en se basant sur l’épargne des parotides. La valeur prédictive de paramètres quantitatifs issus de la TEP a été évaluée à travers une revue systématique de la littérature. La valeur prédictive de paramètres intensité issue de la TEP a été analysée dans 2 cohortes indépendantes. Résultats : Nos travaux ont confirmé qu’en l’absence de radiothérapie adaptative pour des cancers des VADS, il existe un risque de surdosage des parotides de plus de 2 Gy pour les 2/3 des patients. Il s’y associe un risque de sous dosage de la tumeur de plus de 1 Gy pour 50 % des patients. Une radiothérapie adaptative permet de corriger à la fois le surdosage des parotides (bénéfice clinique estimée de 10 % de diminution du risque de xérostomie) et le sous dosage de la tumeur. Basés sur des paramètres issus de la planification et de la première semaine de traitement, des modèles de prédiction du risque de sur dosage des parotides ou de sous dosage de la tumeur ont été développés. Les paramètres TEP prédictifs du risque de récidive ont été identifiés. Un nomogramme a pu être développé et validé dans une 2nd cohorte de patients. Conclusion : Nos travaux confirment le bénéfice d’une radiothérapie adaptative pour épargner les parotides et maintenir la couverture tumorale. Ce bénéfice dosimétrique devrait permettre une diminution de la toxicité et une amélioration du contrôle local. Des paramètres anatomiques et dosimétriques simples permettent l’identification des patients à risque de surdosage des parotides ou de sous dosage de la tumeur. L’utilisation de la TEP permet d’identifier précocement les patients à haut risque de récidive, candidats potentiels à une intensification thérapeutique. Ces résultats justifient la poursuite des travaux sur une cohorte de patients plus importante, idéalement dans le cadre d’études cliniques de phase III<br>Objectifs: The aims of this work were (i) to evaluate the dosimetric benefit and to predict the clinical benefit of adaptive radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, regarding both toxicities and local control, (ii) to identify patients whose good candidate for an adaptive strategy, and (iii) to identify the best adaptive strategy to spare the parotid glands. Materials and methods: The dosimetric benefit was assessed using data from a phase III study evaluating the clinical benefit of an adaptive radiotherapy. Cumulated dose with and without adaptive was estimated using deformable image registration. Different methods of deformable image registration were evaluated regarding both spatial and dose estimation accuracy. Predictive model of the risk of parotid gland overdose was computed using generalized linear mixed model and cross validation by leave‐one‐out. The dosimetric benefit of numerous replanning strategies, defined by various numbers and timing of replanning, with regard to parotid gland sparing, was quantified. We performed a systematic review to evaluate the predictive value of quantitative PET parameters. The predictive value of PET intensity parameters was assessed using two independent cohorts of patients. Résultats: Without adaptive radiotherapy, 65% of the patients had a PG overdose of more than 2 Gy and 50% of the patients had a tumor underdose of more than 1 Gy. Adaptive radiotherapy allows to correct both parotid gland overdose and tumor underdose. Based on parameters calculated at the planning and at the first week of treatment, predictive models of PG overdose and tumor underdose were computed. PET parameters correlated with overall survival were identified. Using two independent cohorts of patients, a nomogram to predict survival was build and externally validated. Conclusion: Our studies showed the benefit of adaptive radiotherapy to spare the parotid glands while increasing tumor coverage. These benefits should allow to decrease the toxicities while increasing local control. Early anatomical and dosimetric parameters allow identifying patients at risk of tumor underdose or parotid gland overdose. PET performed before the treatment allows identifying patients with a high‐risk of locoregional failure and death, potentially candidates for treatment. These results justify further studies on a larger cohort of patients, ideally in phase III clinical trials

The purpose of this paper is to understand and criticize the representation of women in advertisements. I examine the opposing yet similar ways that women are portrayed in Dove and Axe advertisements, two brands of Unilever. This paper analyzes the way in which brands market their products in such a way to appeal to a gendered audience. I also explore the history of how women have been depicted in art movements such as Surrealism, detournement and culture jamming, corresponding with my project of digital mixed media advertisements. I examine the way in which the prevalence of the male gaze in the media hinders progression to a less dependent, inferior, and sexualized view of women in advertising.

passagem pela
história da Sociedade Britânica de Psicanálise,
especialmente após a morte de
Freud, gerada por divergências teóricas entre sua filha
Anna Freud e Melanie
Klein., com ênfase na perspectiva do chamado Middle
Group
(O Grupo dos
Independentes Ingleses). Nas discussões científicas em
torno do legado freudiano,
aquele grupo foi assim chamado exatamente por posicionar-
se entre os annafreudianos
e os kleinianos. Um de seus expoentes foi o objeto
principal desse
estudo: Donald W.Winnicott. Na medida em que se procurou
investigar as bases
teóricas a partir das quais Winnicott se inspirou,
abordaram-se contribuições
teóricas freudianas e kleinianas, numa breve incursão
por
alguns de seus
principais conceitos, seguida de uma reflexão sobre as
diferenças básicas
postuladas pelos autores - Winnicott e Klein. De Melanie
Klein destacaram-se o
conceito de Instinto de morte inato e a problemática do
papel do ambiente na
emergência do eu. De Winnicott trabalhou-se as
contribuições sobre o processo
do amadurecimento emocional primitivo, sobretudo no que

valorização do ambiente e da dependência nas etapas mais
precoces do

supracitados.<br>The purpose of the present study was to investigate the
influence of the
real, environmental factor in the establishment of self,
represented by the
dependence of the baby on maternal care. We began,
therefore, by mapping the
discussions known as the Controversies through the history
of the British
Psychoanalytical Society, particularly after the death of
Freud, caused by
theoretical differences between Freud s daughter Anna and
Melanie Klein, and
focusing on the standpoint of the so-called Middle Group.
In the ensuing
scientific debates surrounding the Freudian legacy, the
name of this group is
representative of the fact that it positioned itself
between the Anna Freudians and
the Kleinians. One of its proponents, Donald Winnicott,
was the main object of
this study. As we sought to investigate the theoretical
foundations that inspired
Winnicott, we address the Freudian and Kleinian
theoretical contributions, delving
briefly into the major associated concepts. We then
reflect basic differences
established by the authors - Winnicott and Klein. The main
concepts of Melanie
Klein are the innate death instinct and the problem of the
role of the environment
in the emergence of ego. Winnicott s contributions were on
the primitive
emotional maturing process, particularly regarding the
importance of the
environment and dependence in the earliest stages of
development, so as to
highlight the theoretical innovations that the author
brought to traditional
psychoanalysis.

Ces cellules contribuent à notre immunité innée, soit tournée vers l’intérieur (macrophages), soit vers l’extérieur (glandes sous-maxillaires).<p><p>Nous avons dans un premier temps confirmé par Western blot et par des dosages de la concentration intracellulaire de calcium ([Ca2+]i) que les deux types de cellules étudiés expriment des récepteurs P2X4 et P2X7 fonctionnels.<p><p>Nous nous sommes alors concentrés sur deux réponses impliquées dans la protection de l’hôte contre les agressions et l’élimination de pathogènes :la production d’espèces réactives de l’oxygène (ROS) ainsi que la sécrétion de la cytokine pro-inflammatoire interleukine-1beta (IL-1beta). Nos résultats montrent que la production de ROS en réponse à l’ATP extracellulaire est secondaire à l’activation d’une NADPH oxydase dans les deux types de cellules. Cette réponse est médiée par les récepteurs P2X7 ainsi que, dans les macrophages, par d’autres récepteurs purinergiques comme par exemple les récepteurs P2X4 et des récepteurs P2Y. Dans les glandes exocrines, contrairement aux macrophages, la protéine kinase C ainsi que ERK1/2 interviennent dans l’activation de la NADPH oxydase. <p><p>Par la suite nous avons comparé la régulation de l’expression et de la sécrétion d’IL-1beta par les macrophages et les glandes sous-maxillaires. Nous avons observé que l’IL-1beta est présente dans la salive collectée chez des souris injectées par de la pilocarpine. Des analyses par ELISA, RT-PCR et Western blot montrent que la cytokine est exprimée de manière constitutive par les cellules acineuses et ductales des glandes sous-maxillaires, à un niveau plus élevé que dans les macrophages. Contrairement aux cellules phagocytaires, l’expression de la cytokine dans les cellules des glandes salivaires n’est pas augmentée suite à la stimulation par des lipopolysaccharides. De même, dans ces cellules l’ATP n’a pas provoqué la sécrétion d’IL-1beta malgré l’efflux de K+ secondaire à l’activation des récepteurs P2X7. <p><p>Dans une dernière série d’expériences nous avons évalué les effets du peptide antimicrobien CRAMP sur les macrophages murins. Le CRAMP a inhibé toutes les réponses secondaires à l’activation des récepteurs P2X7 (ouverture du canal cationique, formation de pore, production de ROS, libération d’IL-1beta, d’acide oléique et de lactate déshydrogénase). L’inhibition par le CRAMP de l’augmentation de la [Ca2+]i en réponse à l’ATP n’était pas médiée par les récepteurs aux peptides formylés car les agonistes de ces récepteurs n’ont pas bloqué cette augmentation. Le CRAMP n’a pas eu d’effet sur l’augmentation de la [Ca2+]i secondaire à l’activation des récepteurs P2X4 par une combinaison d’ATP et d’ivermectine.<p><p>Nos expériences ont révélé que les récepteurs P2X7 sont couplés à diverses voies de signalisation dans les macrophages et dans les glandes exocrines. Les voies activées diffèrent en fonction du type de cellules. Les tiques du genre Ixodes englobent un grand nombre d’espèces dont Ixodes ricinus, objet de cette étude. Ixodes ricinus peuple les sous-bois de nos régions et la plupart des grandes forêts de l’Europe centrale et de l’est. Au cours de leur cycle parasitaire, les tiques réalisent un repas sanguin au détriment de petits mammifères (mulots, lièvres,…), mais aussi de grands mammifères tels que le cerf, la biche ou le sanglier. Elles deviennent particulièrement voraces au début du printemps et en automne, c’est pourquoi à ces époques de l’année, les promeneurs et les animaux domestiques (principalement, le chien) peuvent en être infestés. Pour mener à bien leur repas sanguin, les tiques mettent en place une série de mécanismes les rendant non seulement indécelables par l’animal parasité mais aussi leur donnant la capacité de contrecarrer les défenses de l’hôte. En effet, lors de sa fixation et durant tout le repas sanguin, la tique injecte un cocktail de facteurs bioactifs qui inhibent la sensation de douleur au moment de l’ancrage dans le derme, mais également les défenses immunitaires de l’hôte parasité. De plus, certains de ces facteurs possèdent des propriétés anti-hémostatiques garantissant la fluidité du sang pendant tout le repas.<p><p>Le Service de Biologie Moléculaire des Ectoparasites (anciennement Service de Génétique Appliquée) a identifié un grand nombre de séquences d’ARNm induites spécifiquement dans les glandes salivaires de la tique au cours de son repas sanguin. Deux d’entres-elles ont servi de point de départ à ce travail :il s’agit de seq16 (renommée Metis1) et de seq7 (renommée Ir-CPI).<p><p>Le travail sur la séquence seq16 a conduit à l’identification d’une nouvelle famille de 5 métalloprotéases (nommée Metis pour Metalloprotease from Ixodes ricinus). L’analyse des séquences a permis de les associer à certaines métalloprotéases hémorragiques de venin de serpent. Bien que les 5 métalloprotéases décrites possèdent toutes les mêmes caractéristiques au niveau de leur séquence et de leur profil d’expression dans les glandes salivaires, les résultats d’analyse phylogénétique, d’étude de variation antigénique, de leur mode d’activation et de leur spécificité d’action permettent de les diviser en 3 sous-familles. L’utilisation de la technique d’ARN interférence en in vivo et l’analyse vaccinale soulignent le rôle essentiel de la famille Metis dans les premières heures du repas de la tique et de manière générale dans la réussite du repas sanguin. Enfin, des études d’activité ont montré que certains membres de la famille ont une activité fibrino(gèno)lytique ;plus particulièrement, la protéine Metis4 possède une activité protéolytique envers la gélatine, la caséine, la fibronectine et le fibrinogène. Ces études ont montré également un mode d’activation original ;plutôt que d’être activée par une pro-séquence en amino-terminal, Metis4 s’active spontanément en perdant un peptide à son extrémité carboxy-terminale. <p><p>Le travail sur la séquence seq7 a conduit à la caractérisation d’un nouvel inhibiteur de sérines protéases. Cette protéine, nommée Ir-CPI pour « Ixodes ricinus - Contact Phase Inhibitor », possède un motif kunitz et est capable d’inhiber de manière importante la voie intrinsèque de la coagulation et dans une moindre mesure la fibrinolyse. Grâce à la technique d’ARN interférence, l’activité de la protéine recombinante a été corrélée à l’activité de la protéine native exprimée dans les glandes salivaires. Ir-CPI inhibe dans un plasma humain l’activation réciproque du facteur XII, de la prékallikréine et du facteur XI, et se fixe spécifiquement à la forme activée de ces trois facteurs. De plus, Ir-CPI est capable de bloquer la fibrinolyse en inhibant spécifiquement la plasmine. Enfin, les résultats obtenus sur deux modèles animaux indépendants établissent l’effet d’Ir-CPI comme agent anti-thrombotique en empêchant la formation de caillot et de manière remarquable sans altérer l'équilibre hémostatique.<p><p>En conclusion, ce travail a identifié des protéines anti-hémostatiques qui agissent soit comme inhibiteur de protéases empêchant la coagulation soit comme protéases facilitant la lyse du caillot. Les recherches portent sur le tube digestif, le labre et les glandes labrales, qui interviennent a des degres divers dans la nutrition des copepodes. Les investigations sur le tube digestif concernent des calanoides d'eaux continentales, les diaptomidae. La structure et l'ultrastructure de cet organe montrent, comme chez les calanoides marins, un intestin moyen divise en 3 zones, constituees par 3 types cellulaires specialises dans differentes fonctions : r (absorption), f (secretion), b (digestion intracellulaire et excretion-detoxication). Le labre delimite en partie le stomodeum et contient les glandes labrales qui y deversent leurs secretions par des pores situes sur la face interne du labre et associes a des papilles sensorielles. La presence chez certains calanoides de pores glandulaires sur la face externe et meme sur le sternite et les pleurites cephaliques, constituerait un caractere primitif. Chez certains cyclopoides, le labre est articule avec la levre inferieure. Enfin, il n'existe aucune differenciation notable du labre en relation avec le regime alimentaire. Les glandes labrales sont composees d'unites syncytiales (sauf chez les cyclopoides) de 2 types essentiels : a produisant des secretions denses, vraisemblablement de nature glycoproteique (enzymes), b elaborant des secretions claires, sans doute des proteoglycanes (mucus). Ces produits sont deverses dans le stomodeum par les pores du labre et les papilles sensorielles doivent assurer le controle de leur secretion. Les donnees precedentes permettent de subdiviser le deroulement des processus digestifs en 6 phases essentielles au cours desquelles se produisent, notamment, une digestion luminale par les secretions labrales et intestinales, suivie d'une digestion intracellulaire et d'une excretion-detoxication.

Nous rapportons les résultats de 3 études consacrées à la caractérisation des cellules myoépithéliales (CM) des glandes salivaires et à leur fonction éventuelle dans le développement tumoral. Nous avons d’abord démontré par double marquage (68 tumeurs des glandes salivaires, 6 tissus contrôles) l’existence dans 92% des tumeurs testées, d’une immunoréactivité nucléaire de la p63 dans les compartiments cellulaires CM, et les cellules basales canalaires (CB), et une absence de réactivité au niveau des cellules luminales (adénomes pléomorphes, adénomes à cellules basales, carcinomes adénoïdes kystiques, carcinomes à cellules myoépithéliales). En ce qui concerne les carcinomes mucoépidermoïdes (CME), CB, cellules squameuses et intermédiaires expriment la p63. Il en est de même pour les CB des tumeurs de Whartin et des oncocytomes. Nous avons ensuite analysé l’activation de la voie ERK-1/ERK-2 dans les CME (57 CME, et 37 tissus contrôles,) et étudier son expression au niveau du contingent CM. La voie ERK-1/ERK-2 est activée dans les CME, et significativement corrélée de façon indépendante à l’agressivité tumorale. Il existe une expression de l’ERK-1/ERK-2 phosporylés au niveau des cellules intermédiaires des CME, considérées comme des CM modifiées. Nous avons enfin, à partir de la constitution de tissue arrays testé au niveau de 150 adénomes pléomorphes et leurs tissus contrôles, l’expression de : PS100, actine, p63, des CK : AE1/AE3, 7, 5/6, 10/13, 8, 18, 19, 34 beta E12, MIB-1, MUC-1, Notch1, jagged1 et le bleu alcian. L’analyse par classification hiérarchique a permis de définir des profils d’expression des différents compartiments normaux de l’arbre salivaire et au niveau des tumeurs de distinguer deux grands clusters sans corrélation significative (p=0,1) avec l’indice de prolifération mesuré par MIB-1. La comparaison des profils d’expression des compartiments normaux et des clusters rencontrés, laisse à penser que la fonction de la CM dans le développement des adénomes pléomorphes est probablement surestimée par rapport à celle des CB des canaux striés<br>In order to characterize the salivary gland (SG) myoepithelial cells (MC) and their tumor development relationship, we reported 3 consecutive studies. First we demonstrated by immunostaining (68 SG tumors, and 6 normal samples) a p63 nuclear staining in MC and in duct basal cells (BC) among 63/68 tumors, and the absence of staining in luminal cells (pleomorphic adenomas, basal cell adenomas, adenoid cystic carcinomas, epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas). Moreover, in mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC), BC, squamous and intermediate cells express p63. Likewise, BCs are reactive in Warthin tumors and oncocytomas. Next we analyzed ERK-1/ERK-2 pathway activation in MEC (57 MEC, and 37 normal samples) and examined its expression at the MC level. ERK-1/ERK-2 pathway is activated in MEC, and significantly correlated to aggressive tumor behavior. Phosphorylated ERK-1/ERK-2 is noted in MEC intermediate cells, considered as modified MCs. Finally, we studied on tissue arrays (150 pleomorphic adenomas and their normal counterpart) the expression of: PS100, actin, p63, cytokeratins: AE1/AE3, 5/6, 7, 8, 10/13, 18, 19 and 34bE12, MIB-1, MUC-1, Notch1, Jagged1 and alcian blue. Mucoepidermoid carcinom (MEC) är en malign mucin-producerande tumör som förekommer i både stora och små spottkörtlar. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka histologiskt uttryck av muciner (MUC1, MUC4, MUC5AC, MUC5B, MUC6) i MEC för att eventuellt hitta en korrelation mellan kvalitativt mucinuttryck och tumörgrad. Tolv låg- och fem höggradiga MEC och nio normala spottkörtlar intill tumörvävnad undersöktes med hjälp av immunohistokemi där proverna utvärderades med avseende på färgningsmönster och positivitet i specifika celltyper. Normala spottkörtelceller uttryckte främst cytoplasmatiskt mucin MUC5B. MUC1 och MUC4 uttrycktes i normala spottkörtelgångsceller i ungefär hälften av proverna medan MUC5AC uttryck var sällsynt i normala spottkörtlar. MEC:ar uttryckte MUC1, MUC4, MUC5AC och MUC5B. Den apikala delen av membranet i de bägarceller som omger cystiska hålrum visade den starkaste färgningen för MUC1 och MUC4. Uttryck av MUC4 i bägarceller minskade med ökad histologisk grad. Bägarcellers uttryck av MUC5B:s i låggradig MEC var mindre intensivt än uttrycket av MUC5AC i samma celler. Högre uttryck av MUC5B jämfört med MUC5AC noterades i höggradiga tumörer. Sammanfattningsvis uttrycker MEC olika mängd av muciner än normala spottkörtlar. MUC5AC:s uttryck i MEC verkar vara en metaplastisk funktion och MUC4 tycks relatera till tumörens differentieringsgrad. Förhållandet mellan MUC5AC och MUC5B uttryck skulle kunna vara ett användbart verktyg vid diagnostisering och prognosutvärdering av MEC.<br>Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) are malignant epithelial mucin-producing tumours encountered in both major and minor salivary glands. The aim of this study was to investigate the histological characteristics of the expression of mucins (MUC1, MUC4, MUC5AC, MUC5B, MUC6) in MECs in search for a possible correlation between qualitative mucin expression and tumour grade. Twelve low-grade, five high-grade MECs and nine normal salivary glands adjacent to tumour tissue were investigated for these mucins by immunohistochemistry. The samples were evaluated with respect to staining pattern and positivity of specific cell types. Normal acinar cells mainly expressed the cytoplasmic mucin MUC5B. MUC1 and MUC4 were expressed in normal ductal cells in approximately half of the samples whereas MUC5AC expression was rare in normal salivary glands. MECs expressed MUC1, MUC4, MUC5AC and MUC5B. The apical membrane of mucous cells lining the cystic cavities showed the strongest staining for MUC1 and MUC4. The expression of MUC4 in mucous cells decreased with increasing histological grade. Expression of salivary mucin MUC5B in mucous cells in low-grade MECs was less intense compared to the expression of MUC5AC in the same cells. In high-grade tumours, a higher expression of MUC5B compared to MUC5AC was noted. In conclusion, MECs express different mucin quantity compared to normal salivary glands. MUC5AC expression in salivary tumour tissue seems to be a metaplastic feature and MUC4 appears to be related to tumour differentiation grade. The relationship between MUC5AC and MUC5B expression could be a useful tool in the diagnosis and estimation of prognosis of MECs.

La Néoplasie Endocrinienne Multiple de type 1 (NEM1) est un syndrome héréditaire caractérisé par l'association de lésions des glandes endocrines. La détection de mutation du gène MEN1, prédisposant à la NEM1, est importante pour le suivi médical des patients. Les techniques de diagnostic actuellement utilisées permettent d'identifier une mutation chez 95 % d'entre eux. Afin de contribuer à l'amélioration de ces analyses, nous avons développé de nouveaux outils diagnostics grâce auxquels nous avons identifié une large délétion du gène MEN1. L'étude de l'ARNm a également permis d'identifier les conséquences fonctionnelles de certaines anomalies atypiques du gène sur le processus d'épissage, prouvant ainsi leur pathogénicité. Enfin, nous avons développé un système d'étude de la fonction de la protéine ménine, codée par le gène MEN1, normale ou mutée dans des cellules ß pancréatiques afin d'analyser les conséquences fonctionnelles des mutations faux-sens.

Thesis (MA)-- Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Over the past three decades in South Africa, the documentation of slave history at the Cape
Colony by historians has burgeoned. Congruently, interest in the history of slavery has
increased in South African letters and culture. Here, literature is often employed in order to
imaginatively represent the subjective view-point and experiences of slaves, as official
records contained in historiography and the archive often exclude such interiority. This thesis
is a study of the representations of slave subjectivity in two novels: Rayda Jacobs’s The Slave
Book (1998) and Unconfessed (2007) by Yvette Christiansë. Its task is to investigate and
traverse the multitude of readings made possible in these literary representations, and then to
challenge such readings by juxtaposing the representational strategies of the two novels.
Both primary texts are works of historical fiction that, in different ways, draw on the
archive and historiography in order to grant historical plausibility to their narratives.
Engaging with the distinct methods with which they approach and interpret such historical
information, I adopt the terms “glimpsing” and “reading sideways”. Throughout this study, I
engage each of these methods in order to demonstrate the value, and limits, of each technique
in its engagement with the complexities of representing slave subjectivity in the wake of its
(predominant) occlusion from historical and official data. Chapter One presents a brief overview of the emergence of the slave past in
historiography and public spaces. Following Pumla Gqola’s statement that “slave memory
[has] increase[d] in visibility in post-apartheid South Africa”, I move to a discussion of the
theoretical perspectives on (re)memory as employed by writers of fiction that exemplify “a
higher, more fraught level of activity to the past than simply identifying and recording it ”
(“Slaves” 8) . In turn, I identify the imperative archival silence places on authors to write
about slaves, and the relevance of genre in this undertaking. Specifically, I consider the
romantic and tragic historical fiction genres as they are utilised by Jacobs and Christiansë in
approaching representations of slave subjectivity, and how this influences emplotment.
Chapter One concludes with a brief exposition of the literary representations offered by
Unconfessed and The Slave Book.
Chapter Two presents a detailed study of Rayda Jacobs’s The Slave Book as a novel of
historical fiction. Jacobs takes up a methodology of “glimpsing” at the slave past through the
representations available in historiography. I trace the moments at which the text seeks to
convey slave subjectivity, within and without historical discourses, through such “glimpses”, and show how they are employed to establish a focus on interiority and to humanise slave
characters.
Chapter Three focuses on Yvette Christiansë’s Unconfessed and explores its explicit
engagement with silences surrounding the protagonist Sila van den Kaap’s historical presence
in the Cape Town Archives. I read Christiansë’s representation of these silences as “acts of
looking sideways” at the discursive practices inherent in the historical documentation of slave
voices that enact her resistance to “filling” these silences with detailed narrative. I argue that
the various forms of silence in the narrative allow for a deeper understanding of the injustices
and oppression suffered by Sila van den Kaap, and that it is these silences, ironically, which
grant her voice.
Chapter Four presents a comparison of the novels and their respective representational
techniques of “glimpsing” versus “looking sideways”. While the distinct efficacy and
implication of each approach is critically evaluated, both are ultimately found to make an
invaluable addition to the literary exploration of slave subjectivity as attention is drawn to the

verteenwoording, wat vroeër in amptelike rekords dikwels sodanige innerlikheid uitsluit.
Hierdie tesis is 'n studie van die voorstellings van slaaf subjektiwiteit in twee romans: Rayda
Jacobs se The Slave Book (1998) en Unconfessed (2007) deur Yvette Christiansë. Dit beoog
verder om ondersoek in te stel na die menigte lesings in literêre voorstellings en sodanige
lesings uit te daag deur die vergelyking van die twee betrokke tekste.
Ek neem die "skramse” en "sywaartse" sienings as metodiek vir die eien en
interpretasie van argief-materiaal in die twee tekste. Deurgaans in hierdie studie gebruik ek
hierdie metodieke op hulle beurt ten einde die waarde van elke tegniek te demonstreer, in
terme van die voorstellingshandeling wat elk gebruik om slaaf subjektiwiteit te
verteenwoordig.
In Hoofstuk Een, word teoretiese perspektiewe oor ‘herinnering’ soos dit bestaan as
gevolg van, en ten spyte van, die argief, beskryf en ontleed. In my oorsig van die rol en doel
van die argief sowel as die onthou van 'n slaaf verlede in die hedendaagse Suid-Afrika, word
benaderings wat in verskeie velde onderneem is om slawerny en sy slagoffers uit te beeld, ook
in ag geneem. Ek identifiseer die noodsaaklikheid wat “stiltes” in die argief op skrywers plaas
om oor slawe te skryf, asook die relevansie van die genre in hierdie onderneming. Ek kyk
spesifiek na die romantiese en historiese fiksie genres soos hulle deur Jacobs en Christiansë
gebruik word in hul voorstellings van slaaf subjektiwiteit, en hoe dit voorstellingshandeling
beïnvloed. Hoofstuk Een word afgesluit met 'n kort uiteensetting van die literêre voorstellings,
soos uitgebeeld in The Slave Book en Unconfessed. Hoofstuk Twee is 'n ondersoek na die funksie van Rayda Jacobs se The Slave Book as
'n historiese fiksie-roman. Jacobs se roman bepeins die geskiedenis van slawerny deur die
voorstellingshandeling van ‘n "skramse kyk”. Ek ondersoek die waarde van die romanse wat
in die roman opgeneem word, sowel as Jacobs se gebruik van historiografie om haar verhaal
te ondersteun.
Hoofstuk Drie fokus op Yvette Christiansë se Unconfessed en die wyse waarop die
slaaf karakter as protagonis die stiltes as gemarginaliseerde aan die leser kommunikeer, en daaropvolgend, die wyse waarop die historiese figuur, ten spyte van die stiltes in die argief,
kommunikeer. Hierdie metodiek bestempel ek as die "sywaartse kyk". Ek argumenteer dat die
stiltes in die roman ‘n leemte laat vir 'n dieper begrip van die onreg en onderdrukking wat
deur die protagonis gely word, en dat, ironies genoeg, dit hierdie stiltes is wat aan haar ‘n
“stem” gee.
Hoofstuk Vier is 'n vergelyking tussen die romans en hul doeltreffendheid. Altwee
tekste, van ewe belang nagaande die bevordering van subjektiwiteit van slawe tydens die
Kaapkolonie, beslaan elk 'n ander benadering tot die argief en geskiedenis self. Dit is met
hierdie perspektiewe waarmee hierdie studie omgaan.
Beide tekste vorm ‘n waardevolle toevoeging tot die literêre verkenning van slaaf
subjektiwiteit deurdat aandag op die innerlikheid van elke teks se protagoniste gevestig word.
Verder, deurdat die tekste met historiografie en die argief omgaan, spreek hulle diskursiewe
kwessies rakende slaaf subjektiwiteit en die voorstellings daarvan aan.

Personality characteristics of the intellectually gifted living under poverty conditions are des-cribed, following the Rorschach Psychodiagnostic test. Participants were 55 boys and girls (27 intellectual gifted, 28 non-gifted), age range 9-12, previously selected with the Multi-factorial model of giftedness for a former study. Results revealed that the intellectually gifted children ex- hibit the following personality characteristics: (a) tendency to approach situations from personal reflections; (b) sophisticated emotional resources; (c) high levels of initiative and creativity; (d) tendency to perfectionism; (e) need to control situations; (f) unconventionality; (h) high levels of sensibility; (i) oppositeness, as well as (j) insight resources. They also exhibit characteristics expected in poverty contexts such as cautiousness and low level of self-confidence, high levels of stress and alert towards the environment, as well as tendency to depression. Recommendations for intervention purposes are given, as well as the need to develop research lines from a multidis-ciplinary approach.<br>Se describen las características de personalidad de niños talentosos en riesgo según el Psicodiagnóstico de Rorschach. Los participantes fueron 55 niños (27 talentosos y 28 no talentosos) de 9-12 años de edad, seleccionados para un estudio previo. Los resultados revelan que los talentosos exhiben las siguientes características: (a) se aproximan a las situaciones a partir de la auto-reflexión, (b) poseen recursos afectivos sofisticados, (c) exhiben niveles significativos de iniciativa y creatividad, (d) tienden al perfeccionismo, (e) tratan de asumir el control de las situaciones, (f ) son poco convencionales (h) exhiben elevados niveles de sensibilidad, (i) tienden a la oposición y (j) poseen recursos de introspección. Asimismo, se observan características esperadas en contextos de pobreza, tales como cautela y bajo nivel de confianza, elevados niveles de estrés y tendencia hacia la depresión. Se proponen recomendaciones para su atención así como el desarrollo de líneas de investigación interdisciplinarias.

Les tumeurs endocriniennes sont des tumeurs rares, présentant des caractéristiques métaboliques communes qui déterminent tant leur prise en charge que les modalités d'imagerie. Notre étude a porté sur l'apport des traceurs radioisotopiques ciblant des systèmes métaboliques spécifiques de ces tumeurs. La mIBG, structurellement proche de la noradrénaline, est recaptée par les terminaisons adrénergiques via un transporteur spécifique (NAT). La scintigraphie à la mIBG radioiodée visualise donc les vésicules de stockage des catécholamines et constitue un outil pour la mise en évidence des tumeurs dérivées de la crête neurale. Les études préliminaires ont montré son intérêt dans la recherche du neuroblastome avec une spécificité et une sensibilité très élevées. L'octréotide est un analogue de la somatostatine qui se fixe de façon spécifique sur les récepteurs de type SSTR 2. Ainsi, la scintigraphie à l'octréotide marqué 111In permet l'évaluation des tumeurs endocrines dérivées de l'endoderme qui expriment ces récepteurs membranaires. Le 18FDG est un traceur du métabolisme glucidique dont l'utilisation repose sur l'augmentation de l'activité glycolytique au niveau des tumeurs. Son intérêt n'est plus à démontrer en oncologie. Dans le cancer thyroi͏̈dien, plusieurs études documentent son apport potentiel et suggèrent une supériorité du TEP-FDG sur les méthodes conventionnelles de diagnostic des métastases. Nous avons cherché à optimiser les paramètres d'utilisation de ces méthodes afin de permettre une détection complète des localisations tumorales chez un individu donné, notamment dans l'exploration de tumeurs peu différenciées, d'homogénéiser les pratiques scintigraphiques, dans un souci de reproductibilité, et de poser les bases d'un traitement de type radiométabolique. En particulier, nous avons démontré que le recours à des activités élevé de mIBG n'augmentait pas de façon significative la sensibilité de l'examen scintigraphique. Nous avons également montré que la scintigraphie à l'octréoscan a une place limitée dans la stratégie diagnostique du cancer médullaire de la thyroi͏̈de. La scintigraphie au 18FDG, par contre, est d'après notre étude, un examen performant, complémentaire de l'imagerie conventionnelle pour le diagnostic des localisations secondaires dans les cancers thyroi͏̈diens ne fixant pas l'iode 131. Afin d'améliorer les performances de ces méthodes, il serait intéressant de pouvoir développer d'autres voies métaboliques. Ainsi différents traceurs sont à l'étude, particulièrement ceux basés sur les techniques de tomographie par émission de positrons. This study is an investigation into the communicative power of visual metaphor and the ways in which it is used by artists. A wide range of works of art are used to exemplify the theories presented. The first part of the thesis is a discussion of whether the term 'metaphor' can be used to describe some of the transformations which take place in visual art. It is shown that works of visual art produce similar kinds of displacement of meaning as those created in verbal metaphor. An idea for a theory of visual metaphor is put forward. Some applications of this theory to specific works of art are discussed. The 'ironic glance' which is characteristic of the artist and often of the viewer is identified and explained. Historical ideas of irony are placed in context with modern concepts. It is postulated that all creativity requires the artist to exercise irony in his or her initial view of the world; in making; and in the implicit assumption of a `putative audience'. A detailed discussion of examples of visual art selected predominantly from 1800 to the present shows that metaphorical expression takes place in many kinds of visual art, from the allegorical to the apparently abstract. A discussion of the interaction between artist and viewer follows. The concept of `distance' in the making and viewing of artworks is considered, particularly in connection with the idea of an ironic stance. The idea of the 'ironic glance' incorporates within it a sense of distance in all aspects of making and looking at art. The different ways in which artists communicate metaphorically are discussed. The importance of 'received' knowledge, especially in connection with the 'formal' elements of artworks and the individual viewer's 'mental store'. is considered. The way in which a viewer approaches art is explored' by showing the way that metaphor directs thought in a way which paradoxically both illuminates understanding and limits our view. The viewer's `mental store' allows him or her to understand some artworks and through this understanding approach other works. It is suggested that the directive nature of metaphor means that the artist, either consciously or subconsciously, has in mind a putative audience. Throughout, the thesis is supported by a broad range of reference. Similar ideas expressed by philosophers, critics, theorists of language, poets and artists are drawn together to support the formulation of new ideas linking metaphorical expression, irony and the relationship of an artist to the putative viewer.

semelhanças e diferenças guarda com os clássicos de terror?

abordando os ingredientes das ficções, a idéia é fazer uma

the Brazilian movie industry passes as a compulsory

Internet, in order to keep on insisting/investing in the
arduous task of making scripts, producing and releasing
his more than 30 films. The intention is to understand why
his history happened this way. What similarities and
differences does it keep with the classics? To what
extent can he be considered as a descendent of the French
theatre of the Grand Guignol? Much more than analyse narrow
concepts about the fantastic literature approaching
fictions ingredients, the idea is to make an analysis of
the horror in its contemporary and cultural aspects

Die am LHC gewonnen Ergebnisse stimmen überwiegend mit den Vorhersagen des Standardmodells der Teilchenphysik (SM) überein, doch die Notwendigkeit von Physik jenseits des Standardmodells (BSM) bleibt. Allerdings führt kein klarer Weg zu einem Nachfolger des Standardmodells. In dieser Arbeit wird daher ein allgemeines theoretisches Werkzeug für die Erforschung der Grenzen des SM verwendet: die Effektiven Feldtheorien (EFTs). In dieser Arbeit wird die Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) benutzt, um das Potential des zukünftigen Hadronenbeschleunigers FCC-hh zu beurteilen. Hierfür wird der Vh-Produktionsprozess untersucht. Die Sensitivität dieser Kanäle wird durch die Messung von doppelt differenziellen Wirkungsquerschnitten möglich. Die Abwesenheit von Eich-Anomalien ist nötig, um die Konsistenz einer Quantenfeldtheorie zu bewahren. Es wird gezeigt, dass die SMEFT bis zur Massendimension 6 für beliebige Werte seiner WCs frei von aus Dreiecks-Anomalien stammenden Eich-Anomalien ist. Die bosonischen EFT-Techniken werden auch benutzt, um die Beziehung zwischen gemischten globalen Eich-Anomalien und Axion-Kopplungen zu Vektorbosonen in Axion-EFTs zu analysieren. Es ergibt sich, dass diese in keiner Beziehung zueinander stehen, wenn schwere chirale Fermionen ausintegriert werden. Dieser Fakt verknüpft Axion-EFTs mit chiralen Erweiterungen des Standardmodells. Für nichtabelsche Eichbosonen werden IR-Summenregeln gefunden, deren Verletzung die Anwesenheit chiraler Felder im UV-Bereich anzeigen. Es wird eine minimale Erweiterung des Standardmodells als Beispiel studiert. Letztlich wird gezeigt, wie alte Formalismen zu neuen Einsichten führen können. Helizitäts-Spinoren und Streuamplituden werden eingeführt und es wird diskutiert, wie sie die Berechnung der Amplituden erleichtern und inwiefern sie eine Alternative zu EFTs darstellen. Die VVh- und VVhh-Amplituden werden studiert und ihre Hoch-Energie-Grenzwerte einschließlich verschiedener BSM-Beiträge berechnet.<br>The results obtained at the LHC agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model of particle physics (SM). However, the need for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics remains. But there is no clear path towards a successor for the SM. Hence, we must prepare the tools needed to explore the frontiers of physics thoroughly. In this work, we study one of the main theoretical tools that can be used for such an exploration, Effective Field Theories (EFTs). We use the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to study the Vh production process at FCC-hh, assessing the discovery potential of that future collider. The sensitivity to BSM effects is improved via the measurement of doubly-differential cross-sections. We also study the relation between EFTs and anomalies. The absence of gauge anomalies is required to preserve the consistency of a Quantum Field Theory. We prove that SMEFT at dimension 6 is free from gauge anomalies coming from triangle diagrams for any value of its WCs. Then, we analyse the relationship in axion EFTs between mixed global-gauge anomalies and axion couplings to vector bosons. They turn out to be unrelated when heavy chiral fermions are integrated out, linking axion EFTs to chiral extensions of the SM. We find IR sum rules whose violation indicate the presence of chiral fields in the UV. We show and study a minimal phenomenologically relevant model as an example. Finally, we explore how revisiting old formalisms can lead to new insights. We introduce the helicity spinor and scattering amplitudes formalisms and show how they facilitate the computation of cross sections and discuss how they constitute an alternative to EFTs as a parametrisation of BSM effects. We study the VVh and VVhh amplitudes, of which we compute the high-energy limit including different BSM contributions.

Departamento de Medicina e Enfermagem<br>A matriz extracelular é elemento essencial à função peniana, podendo ser acometida por doenças locais ou sistêmicas, embora pouco seja conhecido em relação aos seus componentes na glande peniana humana. Nesse trabalho foi realizado um estudo detalhado da organização morfológica e densidade volumétrica (Vv) das fibras
do sistema elástico em glandes penianas de homens jovens saudáveis. Foram obtidos
fragmentos de glande peniana de 5 (cinco) indivíduos jovens falecidos de causas não
relacionadas ao sistema urogenital, com idade entre 18 e 30 anos (média: 24 anos). Os
espécimes foram fixados em formalina, embebidos em parafina e processados
histologicamente. As fibras do sistema elástico foram avaliadas sob microscopia óptica
usando a técnica de coloração da resorcina-fucsina de Weigert após prévia oxidação
pela oxona. Estudos morfométricos foram realizados através do método de contagem
de pontos. A análise quantitativa foi expressa (% média) como densidade volumétrica
(Vv) através da análise em 25 campos aleatórios para cada espécime. Verificou-se que os constituintes do tecido conjuntivo, em especial fibras do sistema elástico, foram abundantes. Uma rede irregular de fibras do sistema elástico é distribuída sob a
mucosa da glande peniana. As fibras do sistema elástico apresentaram uma disposição
longitudinal no corpo esponjoso e um perfil tortuoso envolvendo sinúsóides da glande.
A Vv das fibras do sistema elástico na glande peniana é de 29.4% ±3.1. Os dados
devem prover informação a ser avaliada em relação a disfunções eréteis, doenças
endócrinas e envelhecimento. Os resultados apresentados fornecem subsídios para
posteriores investigações em relação à matriz extracelular por métodos de estereologia<br>The extracellular matrix is a key element in penile function and pathology, yet little
is known of its components in human glans. Herein we carried out a detailed study of all
the factors that play a part in the morphological organization and volumetric density (Vv)
of elastic fibers in the glans penis of young healthy men. Penile glans were obtained
from 5 young men died of causes no related to the urogenital tract, between the age of
18 and 30 (mean = 24). Samples were fixed in formaline, embedded in paraffin, and
histologically processed. The elastic system fibers were evaluated at light microscopy by
using Weigert’s resorcin-fuchsin technique after previous oxidation with oxone. Morphometric studies were performed by the point-counting method. Quantities were expressed (%mean) as volumetric densities (Vv) and were determined on 25 random
fields for each individual. Connective tissue elements, mainly elastic system fibers, were
abundant. These fibers often had a tortuous profile and surrounded sinusoids in the
glans penis. An irregular elastic fibers network was distributed beneath the glans penis
mucosa, on the other hand, underneath the mucosa, the elastic fibers were observed
longitudinal at corpus spongiosum. The Vv of the elastic system fibers in the glans penis
is 29.4% ±3.1. The data should therefore provide important information for drawing
parallels over patients with erectile dysfunction and alterations regarding endocrine
diseases and aging. The results reported herein provide the base for continuous investigations on extracellular matrix by stereology
