Abstract:
The monograph discusses the application of statistical criteria aimed at testing hypotheses about the absence of a trend in the analyzed samples. The rejection of such a hypothesis gives grounds to consider the analyzed data as samples of independent equally distributed random variables. We consider a set of special criteria aimed at testing such hypotheses, as well as a set of criteria for the uniformity of laws, the uniformity of averages and the uniformity of variances, which can also be used for these purposes. The disadvantages and advantages of various criteria are emphasized, the application of criteria in conditions of violation of standard assumptions is considered. Estimates of the power of the criteria are given, which allows you to navigate when choosing the most preferred criteria. Following the recommendations will ensure the correctness and increase the validity of statistical conclusions when analyzing data. It is intended for specialists who are interested in the application of statistical methods for the analysis of various aspects and trends of the surrounding reality and who are in contact with the processing of experimental results, the need for data analysis in their activities. Abstract:
The monograph describes research methods and geoecological assessment of polder lands. The history of research and practical use of surface waters of the Kaliningrad region is characterized, modern problems of their geoecological state are revealed. The characteristic of polder lands as complex natural and economic systems is given, the necessity of geoecological studies of the catchments of small rivers located on them is substantiated. A methodological approach has been developed to assess the geoecological condition of the basins of small watercourses through the combined analysis of hydrological, hydrochemical and geoecological data. Hydrological calculations of the key characteristics of the river flow of small watercourses of polder lands were carried out, the dependencies between them were revealed. Field studies were carried out, hydrochemical data sets were obtained on the rivers of polder lands for four hydrological seasons of 2020-2021. Retrospective hydrochemical information has been processed. The prevailing pollutants, integral indicators of water quality and the main sources of pollution are calculated. Based on the results obtained, a scheme of spatial distribution of pollution of the river network of polder lands is constructed. The geoecological condition of the basins is assessed on the basis of a complex of natural and anthropogenic data; based on the result obtained, recommendations for its improvement are given. It is of interest to specialists in the field of geoecology, hydrology, hydrochemistry, environmental management and environmental protection.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the author reviews some of the philosophical issues that arise in connection with the concept of data. He first asks what data are, and he evaluates a number of different answers to this question that have been given. The author then examines the concept of so-called big data and the corresponding concept of big science. It has been claimed that the advent of big science calls for a fundamental change to science and scientific methodology. The author argues that such claims are too strong. Finally, the author reviews the distinction between data and phenomena, due to Bogen and Woodward 1988, and discusses some of its connections to big data and big science.

Full text
Abstract:
This article reviews the literature concerning supervised and unsupervised classification of functional data. It first explains the meaning of unsupervised classification vs. supervised classification before discussing the supervised classification problem in the infinite-dimensional case, showing that its formal statement generally coincides with that of discriminant analysis in the classical multivariate case. It then considers the optimal classifier and plug-in rules, empirical risk and empirical minimization rules, linear discrimination rules, the k nearest neighbor (k-NN) method, and kernel rules. It also describes classification based on partial least squares, classification based on reproducing kernels, and depth-based classification. Finally, it examines unsupervised classification methods, focusing on K-means for functional data, K-means for data in a Hilbert space, and impartial trimmed K-means for functional data. Some practical issues, in particular real-data examples and simulations, are reviewed and some selected proofs are given.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the technical issues in modelling health state valuation data. Most measures of health define too many states to directly value all of them (e.g. SF-6D defines 18,000 health states). The solution has been to value a subset and by using modelling to predict the values of all states. This chapter reviews two approaches to modelling: one using multiattribute utility theory to determine health values given an assumed functional form; and the other is using statistical modelling of SF-6D preference data that are skewed, bimodal, and clustered by respondents. This chapter examines the selection of health states for valuation, data preparation, model specification, and techniques for modelling the data starting with ordinary least squares (OLS) and moving on to more complex techniques including Bayesian non-parametric and semi-parametric approaches, and a hybrid approach that combines cardinal preference data with the results of paired data from a discrete choice experiment.

Abstract:
This article discusses the methodology and theory of principal component analysis (PCA) for functional data. It first provides an overview of PCA in the context of finite-dimensional data and infinite-dimensional data, focusing on functional linear regression, before considering the applications of PCA for functional data analysis, principally in cases of dimension reduction. It then describes adaptive methods for prediction and weighted least squares in functional linear regression. It also examines the role of principal components in the assessment of density for functional data, showing how principal component functions are linked to the amount of probability mass contained in a small ball around a given, fixed function, and how this property can be used to define a simple, easily estimable density surrogate. The article concludes by explaining the use of PCA for estimating log-density.

This chapter investigates the use of Extreme Value Statistics (EVS) to probabilistically model extreme events separated as unstructured noise in signal processing. We apply a version of EVS that computes the likelihood of extreme discrepancies exceeding a selected threshold value within a given time interval. In theory, exceedances follow a Generalized Pareto (GP) distribution, and we run diagnostics to determine how well the data actually fit this distribution. If we find a reasonable fit, we can invert the GP distribution to solve for quantiles providing a useful noise diagnostic: return level plots. Return level plots show the return periods expected before particular extreme noise levels return levels are realized.

Abstract:
Biobanks are critical infrastructure for medical research. Biobanks, however, are also the subject of considerable ethical and legal uncertainty. Given that biobanks process large quantities of genomic data, questions have emerged as to how genetic privacy should be protected. What types of genetic privacy rights and rights holders should be protected and to what extent? Since 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has applied and now occupies a key position in the European legal framework for the regulation of biobanking. This book takes an in-depth look at the function, problems, and opportunities presented by European data protection law under the GDPR as a framework for the protection of genetic privacy in biobanking. It argues that the substantive framework presented by the GDPR already offers an admirable baseline level of protection for the range of genetic privacy rights engaged by biobanking. The book further contends that while numerous problems with this standard of protection are indeed identifiable, the GDPR offers the flexibility to accommodate solutions to these problems, as well as the procedural mechanisms to realise these solutions.

Common, IFB. Oecophorine Genera of Australia I. CSIRO Publishing, 1994. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643105119.

Full text
Abstract:
The present volume presents a revision of the Wingia group of 91 genera, a group which appears to be almost entirely endemic to Australia. Detailed information is provided on the morphology, including the genitalia of both sexes, and up-to-date data on the distribution, biology and larval food plants of the species referred to each genus. A list of the species assigned to each genus is given, with full synonymy, references to the original descriptions, label data and repository of the primary type, lectotype designations, and abbreviated distribution data. Illustrations of the adults, wing venation, and male and female genitalia of the type species are included, as well as of the heads and eggs of representative genera. A key to genera is also provided.

Cheng, Russell. Bootstrap Analysis. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198505044.003.0004.

Abstract:
Parametric bootstrapping (BS) provides an attractive alternative, both theoretically and numerically, to asymptotic theory for estimating sampling distributions. This chapter summarizes its use not only for calculating confidence intervals for estimated parameters and functions of parameters, but also to obtain log-likelihood-based confidence regions from which confidence bands for cumulative distribution and regression functions can be obtained. All such BS calculations are very easy to implement. Details are also given for calculating critical values of EDF statistics used in goodness-of-fit (GoF) tests, such as the Anderson-Darling A2 statistic whose null distribution is otherwise difficult to obtain, as it varies with different null hypotheses. A simple proof is given showing that the parametric BS is probabilistically exact for location-scale models. A formal regression lack-of-fit test employing parametric BS is given that can be used even when the regression data has no replications. Two real data examples are given.

Wich, Serge A., and Lian Pin Koh. Deciding to use a drone. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198787617.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter a brief introduction is given on three main aspects that drones are used for: detecting animals; land-cover mapping; and anti-poaching. Then the chapter focuses on which considerations are important to take into account when deciding to start applying drones for conservation. The chapter starts by providing an overview of alternative aerial data collection technologies. Deciding which technology to use for data gathering is not always straightforward and will likely depend on multiple factors. An overview is given of some aspects that are important to consider when starting the process of thinking about data collection. Then a discussion follows about which equipment and infrastructural needs are important to consider when using drones and the chapter ends by discussing some general considerations related to the usage of drones for conservation.

Maiden, Martin. The Romance languages and the Romance verb. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199660216.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
In the first part of the chapter the Romance languages are defined, and the (largely negative) significance of the distinction between a language and a dialect for the morphological data is discussed. The sources for the data on verb morphology are reviewed, and some criteria for assessing the validity of these data are examined. Finally, a comparative–historical structural sketch of the morphology of the Latin and Romance verb is given.
