Abstract:
The history of lymphatic system research goes back to ancient times. Lymph nodes were likely first mentioned in the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt. Hippocrates (5th century BC) in the 5th century BC was one of the first to mention the lymphatic system. One of the first descriptions of what can be attributed to lymphatic vessels can be found in Aristotle. The Byzantine physician Pavlo Aeginsky was a famous surgeon who illustrated the tonsils and performed the first tonsillectomy, which allowed him to identify and describe infected cervical lymph nodes. Indian and Islamic medicine, especially Avicenna, gave interesting descriptions of lymphedema (elephant disease) due to frequent parasitic infections which are more common in eastern regions. Rufus of Ephesus, a Roman physician, discovered the axillary, inguinal, and mesenteric lymph nodes, as well as the thymus, in the 1st-2nd century AD. The first mention of lymphatic vessels was in the 3rd century BC by Herophilus, a Greek anatomist who lived in Alexandria. The Alexandrian school made significant contributions to the study of the lymphatic system stemming from the works of Galen. However, whether the structures described were lymphatic vessels is still debated. Erasistratus, during the dissection of a dairy lamb, showed that the abdominal arteries are filled with milk. Very likely, this is the first misinterpreted study of mesenteric lymphatic vessels. Based on the first observations made by the medieval Arab anatomist ibn Al-Nafis, the Spanish scientist and theologian Miguel Servetus, and the Italian anatomist Realdo Colombo, who described pulmonary circulation, and Andrea Cesalpino, who first introduced the term "circulation" in relation to the cardiovascular system, it was established basic regularities of the structure of the lymphatic system. In the middle of the 16th century, Gabriele Fallopio (researcher of fallopian tubes) described the vessels now known as "mammary glands". Based on all these discoveries, the Italian surgeon and anatomist Giovanni Guglielmo Riva was the first to present a graphic representation of the lymphatic system in two of his four oil paintings, which are now kept in the Academy of History "Arte Sanitaria" in Rome.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: In non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) LKB1 mutations combined with KRAS hyperactivation define a poor responsive, aggressive and disseminating phenotype. We recently unveiled the vulnerability of KRAS/LKB1 co-mutated (KL) patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) to metabolic stress-based treatments, and a clinical trial to test the efficacy of metformin and fasting-mimicking diet on KL NSCLC is currently ongoing in our Institute. Besides inactivating mutations, LKB1 functionality may be impaired by post-translation regulation. Because miR-17 is a potential epigenetic regulator of LKB1,we hypothesized that wild-type LKB1 (LKB1WT) NSCLC with high miR-17 expression may biologically and clinically mirror LKB1 mutated tumors. Methods: NSCLC cell lines with different combinations of KRAS mutation and LKB1 deletion were selected, together with a panel of PDXs with high (LKB1WT/miR-17 high) or low (LKB1WT/miR-17 low) miR-17 expression. Taking advantage of series of NSCLC patients and PDXs, we retrospectively evaluated LKB1 and miR-17 expression levels in tumor tissue specimens. In addition, the TCGA dataset was interrogated for miR-17 expression and potential correlation with lung cancer clinical features. Results: Direct targeting of miR-17 to LKB1 3’UTR was confirmed by luciferase reporter assay. We found that miR-17 overexpression in LKB1WT cell lines functionally impaired the LKB1/AMPK pathway, and prompted apoptotic response to metformin. Of note, LKB1WT/miR-17 high PDXs tumor cells showed a similar behavior upon metformin treatment. A retrospective analysis in patients with NSCLC revealed an inverse correlation between miR-17 and LKB1 expression, and highlighted a prognostic role of miR-17 expression in LKB1WT patients, further confirmed by TCGA data analysis. Conclusions: We validated miR-17 as epigenetic regulator of LKB1 expression in NSCLC tumors. We propose a miR-17 expression score potentially exploitable to discriminate LKB1WT NSCLC patients with impaired LKB1 expression and poor outcome, eligible for energy-stress-based treatments. Abstract:
The present text is the second instalment of the cycle of articles based on its author’s doctoral dissertation entitled The birth of cello as a solo instrument – instruments, prac-tice, and selected literature examples (Academy of Music in Łódź, 2017). It is an at-tempt to systematise the knowledge about the first cello literature creators and their compositions. The text includes descriptions (characterisations) of the first pieces writ-ten for the cello as early as in the 17th century along with short biographical sketches of their composers. The article characterises the main centres of development of cello mu-sic, such as Bologna and Modena, the places of work of Giovanni Battista Vitali, Do-menico Gabrielli, Petronio Franceschini, Giuseppe Jacchini, Bononcini brothers, Gio-vanni Battista Degli Antoni, Domenico Galii, Giuseppe Colombi, and others. These composers mainly focused around Bologna’s Accademia Filarmonica and Basilica of San Petronio, as well as the court of Francesco II d'Este in Modena. The article also pays attention to the circumstances in which the first attempts to write cello pieces were made. Moreover, it mentions singular historical items of early cello literature written in such centres as Rome, Venice or Naples, where Carlo Fedeli, Giovanni Lorenzo Lulier, Nicola Francesco Haym or other composers worked.

Thesis, Normandie, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020NORMR058.

Full text
Abstract:
Cardinal George I d'Amboise is known for his clerical and political functions. When he had reached the height of his glory, by combining the apostolic functions of legate in France and Avignon, and political functions of first counsellor to King Louis XII, he had a splendid private palace built in Gaillon, within which he had several chapels erected. A set of stalls was built, between 1509 and 1518, for the high chapel whose apse is exactly superimposed on that of the low chapel. These stalls are kept in the Basilica of St. Denis, and are the only work, among those commissioned by the cardinal, which has come down to us in almost complete integrity. Like the Château de Gaillon, they present a mix of styles specific to their time, happily combining Gothic and ancient vocabulary. Italian craftsmen came to the site in 1509 and created the marquetry panels. Among them was Giovanni Barili who led this team. All the innovative elements were realized that year. The death of the cardinal in 1510 blocked the work, which was taken over in 1516 by Nicolas Castille. He created a few elements but not enough to make the fourteen stalls planned, so there are only twelve. The elements that were restored or created under Viollet-le-Duc have not altered the appearance or iconography of the ensemble. The sculpted scenes are chosen from the lives of saints or have been inspired by engravings of G. Reisch's Margarita philosophica or Ovid's Metamorphoses. The inlaid scenes call upon the Calendar of the Shepherds, the Book of Hours of Louis de Laval and the dialogue between the sibyls and the virtues links them to the collection of the Divine Institutions of Lactance. The humanist spirit of George I d'Amboise was thus able to reveal itself in the valorization of the ancient spirit and the care he put into dispensing this culture
