Abstract:
The activity of the Catholic missionary Matteo Ripa is placed here in the context of the Chinese rites controversy (CRC), a religious dispute regarding Christian tolerance of Chinese ancestral worship rituals. I trace the distortions in the literature by analyzing three versions of Ripa’s memoirs entitled Giornale. Contrary to a widespread view, Ripa was neither a Jesuit nor a professional artist. Ripa took an active part in the CRC and opposed the members of the Jesuit Order. Ripa’s memoirs, written upon his return from China, have become a truly real weapon in the struggle between Catholic organizations. The Jesuits prepared the first publication of Ripa’s Giornale (1832) that started shaping the image of Ripa. The editors removed all criticisms of the Jesuit activity in China. Additional distortions arise from the simplified and accessible English-language edition of Giornale (1844) that introduces Ripa as a traveling artist. I study the discrepancies between the versions of Giornale to conclude that misrepresentations of Ripa activity and position are related to his role in the CRC. Suggestion is drawn that the main reason for the distorted image of Matteo Ripa in academic literature was not Jesuit’s desire to change the text and the Ripa’s role in the CRC, as the interest of readers in a shortened and more exciting version of the Giornale of 1844. And the well-publicized activities of the Jesuits in the East contributed to the association of Ripa with this order.

Abstract:

Abstract:
International relations in Europe after the Vienna congress, the conferences following it and the treaties signed as a result, were shaped by a confrontation of two main ideological principles that emerged after the Napoleonic era - liberalism and conservatism, amplified by the internal political developments in most European states. From the point of view of the public news agenda, events in Greece have attracted widespread attention not just as another conflict po-tentially capable of turning into a full-scale war involving European empires, but also as one of the manifestations of the struggle for national independence based on liberal ideas. This chapter examines the way the uprising led by A. Ipsilanti in Moldavia and Wallachia was portrayed by the semi-official “Giornale del Regno delle Due Sicilie” and by two Sardinian publications, “Gazzetta di Genova” and “Gazetta piemontese”. Particular attention is given to the time-frame of publications, which usually came much later than the actual events, as well as the general tone of those publications, determined largely by situation in post-Revolutionary Italy, Austrian influence on Italian political life and the fact that Italian publications depended on Austrian sources for information about the events in Moldavia and Wallachia. The author deconstructs the reprinting system used by Italian publications and the usage of material in a de-chronologised, mosaic fashion which further transformed the image of the events for the Italian public, creating a “chorographic image” of the events in the Danube principalities as the Greek struggle for independence unfolded. The description of A. Ipsilanti’s actions, for all the details provide by the aforementioned publications, was inconsistent, as was the description of the results of his struggle, primarily due to the reliance on Austrian and German newspapers as a source of information.

Abstract:
This study presents a typological proposal of bridle and bit portrayed on horses by Situla art, a corpus of about 170 figured bronze works produced between 650 and 270 BC – with a main focus between 650 and 450 BC – and found in about 50 sites located in the Upper Adriatic basin. The first main fact that emerges from the typological classification is that the images, although very realistic as always happens in Situla art, present a much flatter panorama than the archaeological record.

Abstract:
The extensive analysis of remote-sensed data (among which ALS-derived images) and fieldwork carried out in the Trieste Karst (Northeastern Italy) have shed light on archaeological landscapes largely unknown until recent years. The chronological definition of this complex palimpsest was based on the collection of findings associated to the archeological evidence, shape and orientation of detected structures and stratigraphic relations among features. This allowed to evaluate the interplay between archaeological and geo-morphological landforms through time and to reconstruct some long-term economic strategies pursued by past communities. As a result, we present a map of the easternmost sector of the Trieste area, next to the border between Italy and Slovenia, approximately corresponding to the area of the map Carta Tecnica Regionale “Grozzana”. The map aims at providing a tool for the protection of the cultural and environmental heritage, land use planning and touristic valorisation of the area.
