Abstract:
This thesis will examine the works of artists-turned-architects, Arakawa and Gins in light of current research in the arts and sciences on affect and self-organisation. The aim of their project is to arrive at a 'daily research' in which a person may: 1. observe and learn about the operations of his or her own perception and action; 2. interact (dismantle and re-assemble) the identity boundaries reinforced by the habitual implementation of concept and category. This thesis takes account of multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to embodiment and engages Arakawa and Gins from a practising artist's point of view. Given this practical orientation of the study, the aim is to makes a series of critical reflections on the work of Arakawa and Gins and demonstrate how such an approach brings theory and practice together. Exploration of the central aspects of their processes will prepare a person (researcher or practitioner) to begin a practice that is designed to combine studies of embodiment with the co-evolving relationship of organisms and their surroundings, to form the basis of a practice of embodied cognition. The thesis sets out this investigation into three chapters. In Chapter 1, I propose that the context for Arakawa and Gins' work be understood as the result of multidisciplinary interarticulations and multi-modal approaches to embodied activity. The position they occupy in relation to disciplinary endeavours such as art, architecture, psychology, bio-topology and theoretical physics is a process of constant problematisation, convergence and repositioning. A survey of key writings on Arakawa and Gins demonstrates the complexity of their work and the difficulties authors encounter situating them within a context that adequately addresses the scope of their project. In Chapter 2, I map a series of activities that accrue to form embodied configurations made perceptible by Arakawa and Gins' procedural architecture. These tactics apply to the observational-heuristic stance they take towards the perceptions and actions that constitute a person's identity boundaries as well as the transformational approach they take towards perceptions and actions that construct the material surrounds. I propose that the movements initiated by their architectural procedures become the practice of embodied cognition. That is, the ability to increase awareness and construct the shape of awareness is, at the same time, the ability to observe and learn about the anatomical, physiological basis of cognition. Through Æffective readings and embodied engagements I explore how Arakawa and Gins propose that the distribution of awareness may reconfigure the relationships among the organism-person-surround. The practice that repositions a person in relation to him- or herself, to others, to constructions of knowledge and modes of acquiring knowledge, questions the autonomy of any construct, especially constructs that are historically entrenched such as the organism, art, science or agency in general. In Chapter 3, I argue that by investigating the connection between and across the organism, person and surround, a person must reconsider activities, such as judgment and Reason, as ongoing embodied processes. The implication of such a shift impacts upon everyday practices as well as vocational and professional practices aligned with research and development. Throughout this thesis I argue that tactics of Arakawa and Gins' procedural architecture and the ethics of their reversible destiny project are the most productive way to approach the practical and theoretical inquiry into the contributions that humans can make towards co-constructing the world. The complex and intricate processes that emerge from their work will enhance the quality of life by allowing persons to apply the benefits of research in art and science to everyday actions. By devising procedures for re-entering perception and action, the transition from self-awareness to a practice of embodied cognition acquires a renewed urgency for daily life. Further, I have suggested that Arakawa and Gins' works demonstrates how deliberate recursive action may become a practice of embodied cognition. This occurs in three ways. Firstly, any form of deliberate assessment and coordination of top-down conceptual-analytical processing and bottom-up perceptual processing will open the activities of reasoning, selecting, deciding, and judging to new embodied modes of knowledge acquisition and therefore to unprecedented configurations of value. Secondly, the reconfiguration of what counts as knowledge, from an ontological perspective, impacts upon research processes and the way in which research cultures are situated in relation to communities. Lastly, the practice of embodied cognition sets a new agenda for convergent 'daily research' especially the interaction between art and the 'outside of art' and between third-person science and the science of our own fiction. These practical actions will counteract our commitment to closure on many fronts, both personal and historical, from the education of the senses to the construction of social justice.

Abstract:
Arakawa and Gins, radical philosophers of the future, desire to construct life beyond the human condition. Their unique and original contribution to philosophy can be discerned most evidently in their concept of reversible destiny, an innovative response to our mortal condition. ‘We have decided not to die’, their ultimate declaration, is a testament not only to their architecture – an architecture predicated on the notion that death must be combated – but also, and perhaps most importantly, to its ability to teach us to think differently about the future. Even, and perhaps especially, the most fundamental and basic assumptions of our species are deliberately and evocatively called into question. It is this resistance to the present – in learning how not to die, in educating life differently – that will be addressed in this dissertation. The claim made here is that the highly instructive architectural philosophy of Arakawa and Gins produces a positive and useful philosophy of life, which orients us towards a new century of philosophy that operates beyond the human condition.

Marinsek, Nina. "Human GINS : a conserved DNA replication factor and candidate cancer marker." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2010. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/236123.

Abstract:
The GINS complex (a heterotetramer of Sld5, Psf1, Psf2 and Psf3) is a highly conserved DNA replication factor required for the initiation and elongation of DNA replication. GINS is believed to associate with Cdc45 and MCM proteins on replicating DNA. The interaction between GINS and MCM is also conserved in archaea. In my thesis, I explore the subcellular localisation of the GINS complex in relation to the MCM proteins and sites of DNA replication by high-resolution confocal microscopy. For these studies, I generated and carefully validated purified rabbit polyclonal and mouse monoclonal antibodies; these show a specific staining pattern by immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting and immunofluorescence. At high-resolution, all GINS antibodies produced a focal nuclear pattern, similar to that seen for the MCMs. However, confusingly, colocalisation between GINS and MCMs and between the GINS subunits themselves is poor. Investigations are continuing to understand this conundrum. Given the value of MCM proteins as specific and sensitive markers for cancer screening, I investigated whether GINS subunits also have potential diagnostic value. Sld5 and Psf3 expression is restricted to the proliferative compartment in normal tissue, but is found in the majority of cells in a wide range of dysplastic and malignant tissues, including cervix, colon and bladder. In vitro studies of tissue culture cells and cell lysates incubated in urine suggest that Sld5 protein is more stable than Mcm2 in harsh extracellular environments. In an ongoing pilot clinical study of Sld5 protein as a potential biomarker, Sld5 is readily and specifically detectable in the cellular fraction of the samples from prostate and bladder cancer patients. Work is ongoing to evaluate Sld5 protein levels in the supernatant portion of those same urine samples as an easy-to-screen diagnostic/prognostic marker for male urogenital cancers. Owing to their stability, GINS proteins hold promise as independent or complementary markers to the MCM proteins for cancer screening in harsh extracellular environments such as urine.

Buser, Michael Dean. "Errors associated with particulate matter measurements on rural sources: appropriate basis for regulating cotton gins." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/197.

Full text
Abstract:
Agricultural operations across the United States are encountering difficulties complying with current air pollution regulations for particulate matter (PM). PM is currently regulated in terms of particle diameters less than or equal to a nominal 10 μm (PM10); however, current legislation is underway to regulate PM with diameters less than or equal to a nominal 2.5 μm (PM2.5). The goals of this research were to determine the biases and uncertainties associated with current PM10 and PM2.5 sampling methods and to determine the extent to which these errors may impact the determination of cotton gin emission factors. Ideally, PM samplers would produce an accurate measure of the pollutant indicator; for instance, a PM10 sampler would produce an accurate measure of PM less than or equal to 10 μm. However, samplers are not perfect and errors are introduced because of the established tolerances associated with sampler performance characteristics and the interaction of particle size and sampler performance characteristics. Results of this research indicated that a source emitting PM characterized by a mass median diameter (MMD) of 20 μm and a geometric standard deviation (GSD) of 1.5 could be forced to comply with a 3.2 and 14 times more stringent regulation of PM10 and PM2.5, respectively, than a source emitting PM characterized by a MMD of 10 μm and a GSD of 1.5. These estimates are based on both sources emitting the same concentrations of true PM or concentrations corresponding to the particle diameters less than the size of interest. Various methods were used to estimate the true PM10 and PM2.5 emission factors associated with cotton gin exhausts and the extent to which the sampler errors impacted the PM regulation. Results from this research indicated that current cotton gin emission factors could be over-estimated by about 40%. This over-estimation is a consequence of the relatively large PM associated with cotton gin exhausts. These PM sampling errors are contributing to the misappropriation of source emissions in State Implementation Plans, essentially forcing Air Pollution Regulatory Agencies to require additional controls on sources that may be incorrectly classified has high emitters.

Kim, Sungsoo. "Some Physical Characteristics and Heavy Metal Analyses of Cotton Gin Waste for Potential use as an Alternative Fuel." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1996. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc332665/.

Abstract:
This study examines the waste of cotton gins as a potential alternative energy source, on account of its heat content, availability, and low emission rates. To confirm that this potential energy source meets minimum industrial fuel standards, this research has carried out an investigation of some important physical characteristics and toxic element analysis of cotton gin waste. Using cotton gin waste as fuel is an attractive solution to the problems of disposing of a surplus agricultural waste as well as supplementing fuel must meet both environmental emission standards and industrial fuel standards, the physical and chemical characteristics of cotton gin waste and its toxic element concentrations are important for its objective evaluation as a fuel. Constituent components, moisture contents, and ash contents of four separate parts of cotton gin waste were determined and evaluated closely following the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test methods. The three most toxic heavy metals, Arsenic (As), Chromium (Cr), and Lead (Pb), chosen for quantitative analysis were determined by using an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and a microwave oven sample digestion method.

Abstract:
The temporal and spatial redistribution of the environmental masses deform the surface of the Earth. These deformations are observable by space geodetic techniques such as GNSS. Since highly accurate IGS satellite and clock data are available and sophisticated algorithms have been developped, the integer fixed ambiguity Precise Point Positioning (iPPP) method opened a new era for the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) analysis and its application in geophysical studies. This work is among the first studies to investigate the different loading effects using iPPP time series, particularly using the GINS-PC software and the new, reprocessed REPRO2 orbit and clock products of GRGS (GR2). We aim to exploit the sub-daily iPPP time series to study various Earth deformation effects at different time scales, from sub-daily to seasonal and annual periods. Our goal is to contribute to the validation of geophysical models, to the observation of the various non-tidal phenomena, as well as the presentation of the performance of the iPPP mode and the GINS-PC package that is a powerful tool for geodynamical applications, and to investigate the influence of the loading effects on geodetic time series interpretation. After an overview of the main deformations of the Earth's surface, we present the geodetic techniques that already demonstrated their potential in deformation analysis, in particular in loading deformation studies. We then review the GNSS technique and the iPPP processing mode as it was our choice for the data analysis. We then demonstrate two regional studies. The first one investigates the influence of the loading effects on GNSS campaign to determine tectonic velocities in the Pyrenees mountain chain. The second case study attempts to track the spatial and temporal evolution of an extreme storm event, the Xynthia windstorm that occured in France, in 2010. This study also tries to identify the ocean's response to the fast moving low pressure system using sub-daily iPPP time series. Finally we go towards a global study which gives base for future research

Bryant, Victoria. "CMG Helicase Assembly and Activation: Regulation by c-Myc through Chromatin Decondensation and Novel Therapeutic Avenues for Cancer Treatment." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6191.

Full text
Abstract:
The CMG (Cdc45, MCM, GINS) helicase is required for cellular proliferation and functions to unwind double-stranded DNA to allow the replication machinery to duplicate the genome. Cancer cells mismanage helicase activation through a variety of mechanisms, leading to the potential for the development of novel anti-cancer treatments. Mammalian cells load an excess of MCM complexes that act as reserves for new replication origins to be created when replication forks stall due to stress conditions, such as drug treatment. Targeting the helicase through inhibition of the MCM complex has sensitized cancer cells to drugs that inhibit DNA replication, such as aphidicolin and hydroxyurea. However, these drugs are not used in the clinical management of cancer. We hypothesized that the effectiveness of the clinically relevant drugs gemcitabine and 5-FU against pancreatic cancer cells, and oxaliplatin and etoposide against colorectal cells, could be increased through co-suppression of the MCM complex. The oncogene c-Myc also leads to the mismanagement of CMG helicases in part due to a non-transcriptional role in overactivating replication origins and causing DNA damage. We sought to elucidate the mechanism by which Myc causes overactivation of CMG helicases. Herein we demonstrate that co-suppression of reserve MCM complexes in pancreatic or colorectal cancer cell lines treated with clinically applicable chemotherapeutic compounds causes significant loss of proliferative capacity compared with cells containing the full complement of reserve MCMs. This is in part due to an inability to recover DNA replication following drug exposure, leading to an increase in apoptosis. Targeting of Myc to genomic sites induced large-scale decondensation of higher order chromatin that was required for CMG helicase assembly and activation at reserve MCM complexes. The physiological mediators of Myc, GCN5 and Tip60, are required for the chromatin unfolding and Cdc45 recruitment. We conclude that depletion of the reserve MCM complexes causes chemosensitization of multiple human tumor cell types to several chemotherapeutic drugs used in the clinical management of human cancer. This argues for the development and use of anti-MCM drugs in combination with chemotherapeutic compounds, which has the potential to increase the therapeutic index of existing clinical compounds. We have also identified a previously unknown role for Myc in normal cell cycle progression whereby DNA replication initiation is regulated through the assembly and activation of CMG helicases on Myc-mediated open chromatin regions. Our results also provide new mechanistic insight into Myc oncogenic transformation in which overstimulation of DNA replication could result in genomic instability and provide an explanation for Myc driven oncogenic transformation.

Tumini, E. "PSF2 and COPS3 are novel interactors of the Fanconi anemia core complex." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/158339.

Full text
Abstract:
Fanconi anemia (FA) is a congenital disease characterized by bone marrow failure, increased cancer risk and hypersensitivity to DNA cross-linking agents, implying a role for this pathway in the maintenance of genomic stability. The central player of the FA pathway is the multi-subunit E3 ubiquitin ligase complex that is activated through a replication and DNA-damage dependent mechanism. A consequence of the activation of the complex is the monoubiquitination of FANCD2 and FANCI, late term effectors in the maintenance of genome integrity. We find that PSF2 and CSN3 interact with the core complex subunit FANCF in a yeast two-hybrid system. PSF2 is a member of the GINS complex, which is essential both for the initiation and elongation steps of DNA replication. CSN3 is a subunit of the COP9 signalosome (CSN), the regulator of cullin-based ubiquitin ligases. These interactions have been confirmed by co-immunoprecipitation in human cells. We observed a decreased binding to chromatin of the FA core complex in HeLa cells depleted for PSF2, suggesting that the GINS complex may have a role in either loading or stabilizing the FA core complex onto chromatin. However, depletion of PSF2 did not reduce monoubiquitination of FANCD2 or its localization to nuclear foci following DNA damage. On the contrary, depletion of the CSN leads to an increase of monoubiquitinated FANCD2 in normal growth conditions. Our results suggest that PSF2 and CSN3 are novel interacting proteins of the FA core complex.

Abstract:

In this work, we propose a Geographical Information System that can be used as a tool for the treatment and study of problems related with environmental and city management issues. It is based on the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard for Web development of graphics. The project uses the concept of remate and real-time mar creation by database access through instructions executed by browsers on the Internet. As a way of proving the system effectiveness, we present two study cases;.the first on a region named Maracaja? Coral Reefs, located in Rio Grande do Norte coast, and the second in the Switzerland Northeast in which we intended to promote the substitution of MapServer by the system proposed here. We also show some results that demonstrate the larger geographical data capability achieved by the use of the standardized codes and open source tools, such as Extensible Markup Language (XML), Document Object Model (DOM), script languages ECMAScript/ JavaScript, Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) and PostgreSQL and its extension, PostGIS

Abstract:
Consumer studies are well known to assume non-homothetic preferences in their models, as the demand for a good can not be determined by assuming a single representative consumer. The question of how to include non-homothetic preferences into an empirical model for international trade is of importance as if not, the model exclude the demand side reason for trade. And does the effect look different regarding different types of goods. A significant share of countries GDP and the economic growth of a country is relying on trade; hence this question could be of great interest in order to determine trade policies. This thesis endeavoured to estimate the effect of income inequality in both exports and imports regarding one good classified as a luxury and necessity respectively. To accomplish this a Gravity model of trade that includes income distribution is conducted on the basis of an article by Mitra and Trindade(2005). Fixed effect analyses was implemented in order to analyse the data. Data on exports for the years 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2008-2011 gathered from the OECD databank was used in the study together with data on GDP per capita, Gini and population size provided by The World Bank Group. The analyses is based on the estimates of 41 countries. The results of the analyses point toward a possible negative relationship between a greater inequality in the exporting country yields less exports of luxury goods.

Abstract:

FREIJ, LINE, and SANNA PETTERSSON. "MATERIALHANDBOK : För Gina Tricot." Thesis, Högskolan i Borås, Institutionen Textilhögskolan, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hb:diva-20164.

Full text
Abstract:

The idea was born when we were at Gina Tricot, and a customer asked one of the staff how much a pair of jeans will stretch that she wanted to try on. The customer could not get a complete answer to her question, but the employee said "a bit". In addition, we also had the perception that the staff are untaught of, inter alia, the various materials the company uses. We thought a handbook of textiles was the best idea as a solution for this problem. We want Gina Tricots staff to become more knowledgeable in the textiles and thus be able to help customers in an accurate and professional manner.Working closely with our external and internal trainers, we have figured out what the handbook of textiles consists of. These are fabric, knitted and rough knits, the different natural fibers, artificial fibers and mixed fibers that the company uses, untreated and treated denim, as well as dyeing and printing. Beyond these points, we have also chosen details, laundry symbols, questions and answers, as well as a maintenance overview. Below the different fibers are their characteristics and care, to more easily find the information you seek.It has been important to find a balance in order to get as much information as possible in the handbook of textiles, without making it too complicated for the staff. It was similarly with the language, that is, to produce a text as rich as possible, but without the difficult words, when all of the staff should understand the meaning of the text without any doubt. The handbook of textiles is also designed so that it is not necessary to read from cover to cover to understand the content, to make it as user friendly as possible.

I e sob a orienta??o do seu principal ministro, Sebasti?o Jos?

Abstract:
Two different tool boxes using GIS were compared with the purpose of modeling ecologicalconnectivity. Additionally, two different sets of landscape data which could be used in GISmodeling of ecological connectivity at a municipal level were compared. The toolboxes arebeing compared is the Matrixgreen 1.6.4, an extension to ArcGIS 9.3.1, and ODC (Object,Distance, Cost), a selection of tools from the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst. The map data beingcompared is the Swedish Land Cover Data (Svensk MarktäckeData, SMD) and a vegetationmapping prepared by remote sensing and stereo interpretation of infrared aerial photographs. The purpose of this study is to identify an optimal method for analyzing and mappingecological connectivity based on the potentials and limitations that each tool box and mapdata set provides, under technical conditions similar to those of a municipal official’s.Comparisons were made both from a qualitative usability perspective, and a quantitativeperformance perspective with analysis of the quality and resource efficiency assessed. The results of the comparisons indicates that an analysis performed with Matrixgreen, software designed specifically for modeling ecological connectivity is qualitatively lessreliable than an analysis performed with ODC. The reason for this is that Matrixgreen in itspresent form is limited by programming errors, which partly deprives its potential use as toolsto perform connectivity analysis at a landscape scale. In the comparison between the differenttypes of map data, it is my opinion that the vegetation mapping conducted by stereointerpretation is qualitatively superior to land cover data from the SMD as support material inan ecological connectivity analysis. Although, the former is so expensive to produce that it islikely only a relevant option in projects with large budgets.

Abstract:
Antroje darbo dalyje pagal BIS naudojamas reitingavimo modelio galios sąvokas, apibrėžtas reitingavimo modelio Gini indeksas. Be to, apibrėžti Lorenco kreivės apatinės ir viršutinės aproksimacijų Gini indeksai bei sudaryti šių indeksų apibendrinimai – normos bei tūrio daugiamačiai Gini indeksai. Pabaigoje analizuojamas atskirų finansinių rodiklių Gini indeksų stabilumas bei bendras Gini indeksų – vienamčio, normos ir tūrio – stabilumas ir pateikiamos išvados.
Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Basel II resolutions on banks regulatory capital include requirements for credit risk calculation. Credit risk evaluation methods define the possibility of using the internal rating system. One of the main tasks to build the powerful scoring model is to select financial and non-financial factors that appropriately classify companies according to their financial situation. The most popular statistical measure used for discriminatory analysis is the accuracy ratio or Gini index. General Gini index presented in 1914 is still widely applied to measure income inequality in the population. The k-dimensional analogue of Gini index as volume of zonoid was defined only in 1995 by Mosler and Koshevoy. The main purpose of this paper is to build the generalized Gini index of scoring model following the theory of zonoids. In the first part of the paper the usual Lorenz curve, traditional Gini index and its summary measures are presented. The second part presents the definition of the scoring models Gini index according to scoring model power measures applied in BIS resolutions. Furthermore the Gini indexes of Lorenz curve bottom and top approximations are defined and two its summary measures – norm and volume Gini indexes are constructed. Finally the stability of separate financial ratios Gini indexes and the general stability of univariate, norm and volume Gini indexes are analysed and final conclusions are presented.

Full text
Abstract:
Nyckelord: Gips,

Sanders, Jonathon D. "Developing a GIS Tool for Infinite Slope Stability Analysis (GIS-TISSA)." Thesis, Michigan Technological University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10617403.

Full text
Abstract:

The Probabilistic Infinite Slope Analysis model (PISA-m) is a widely used computer program that uses infinite slope equations to calculate the spatially varying Factor of Safety of slopes. ESRI’s ArcGIS software and accompanying geoprocessing tools have become a mainstay in spatial data processing, and received full support for Python with the release of version 10. With many of the geoprocessing tools now available as a Python function, the software can be used for physics-based spatial landslide hazard analysis. A model that mimics PISA-m and its processing of normally distributed soil properties was created using the Python utility as a tool for ArcGIS. The newly created ArcGIS tool is referred as the GIS Tool for Infinite Slope Stability Analysis (GIS-TISSA). The tool was tested using the example data from PISA-m and case-study data from the district of Kannur, Kerala, India. The results from both areas highlight how different slope calculations can affect the overall calculation of the Factor of Safety, as well as the new model’s ability to accurately predict Factor of Safety of slopes in an area.

Abstract:

The geographical information system GRASS has become a standard on the field of geographical phenomenon modeling during its 26 years old lifetime. However, its internal structure follows practices from the date of its creation. This thesis aims to design a possible shape of internal parts modernization using a component architecture and object-oriented design patterns with distributed computing and dynamic languages support in mind. The designed system should stay identical from the user's point-of-view. Design results are proven on a prototype library implementation called the GAL Framework.

Abstract:
This dissertation provides a grounded examination of an evolving geographic information systems (GIS) discourse to examine how it affects decision-making processes in the context of resource management and urban planning issues, and whether the use of GIS is empowering or marginalizing for social groups involved in these processes. By using Foucault's genealogical and critical approaches to study discourse, GIS discourse is reconstructed. From the genealogy approach four discontinuities, the role of positivism, the social construction of GIS technology, the role of GIS manufacturers and vendors, and the institutionalization of GIS are examined to show how they have shaped the discourse. The critical approach uncovers how GIS discourse limits participation in decision-making processes through three systems of exclusions: prohibition, rejection and will to truth. These systems of exclusion legitimate particular knowledge, values and views that can be readily incorporated into a GIS. Typically it is the knowledge, values and views held by more dominant social groups that are privileged by GIS discourse, since they can be expressed in terms that are readily digitizable with no distortion in meaning. Hence, decisions based on the use of GIS tend to empower these groups because outcomes are in line with their interests. Using the Riparian Habitat Protection Ordinance and the Comprehensive Plan from Pima County, Arizona as case studies, this dissertation shows that GIS discourse systematically marginalizes weaker social groups. GIS discourse establishes the boundaries of the debates by shaping the way in which these issues were framed, dictating the data to use and the criteria to evaluate the data, and legitimating the participation of certain social groups. In both case studies social groups who argued from outside these boundaries were marginalized. An examination of power relations among actors reveals which actors can exercise power through decision-making, and that GIS discourse attempts to conceal moments when conscious decisions are made regarding the use of GIS. These moments are opportunities for contestations to occur, but since GIS discourse attempts to hide them, the use of GIS appears to be natural. GIS discourse is also articulated and reinforced through its intersection with local political and economic discourses.

Abstract:
One of the most common ways to produce heat and electricity in Europe today is by the incineration of waste or combustion of coal. These materials can be very sulfurous and during combustion sulfur dioxide is produced. This is an environmental and health related toxic substance which is why power plants have strict regulations on removing it from the flue gas. Sulfur dioxide is removed from the flue gas by adding a limestone reagent. The sulfur dioxide reacts with the limestone and the synthetic product obtained is “Flue Gas Desulfurization gypsum”. This byproduct, from combustion, provides an environmentally friendly solution when used in building material such as plasterboards. The FGD gypsum that is being used in different types of building materials does not derive from waste incinerated power plants. We have more than 30 of these in Sweden and some of them get FGD gypsum as a byproduct. The purpose of this thesis was to find out whether a particular waste incineration plant in Sweden can reuse their gypsum waste instead of disposing it at landfill.
