Plummer, Phillip S. "The Neoproterozoic Gillen Formation, Amadeus Basin, central Australia: an intra-salt petroleum system and viable exploration target?" APPEA Journal 61, no. 1 (2021): 236. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/aj20040.

Full text
Abstract:
The Gillen Formation, the basal component of the lower Neoproterozoic Bitter Springs Group, occurs throughout the Amadeus Basin of central Australia and comprises a basal sequence of black shales and stromatolitic dolostones overlain by an evaporitic sequence of a thick halite sandwiched between two anhydrite/dolomite units. These Gillen lithologies include potential source, reservoir and seal units for petroleum, suggesting an analogy could be drawn with the prolific evaporitic Ara Group Petroleum System of South Oman. Although well data penetrating the Gillen Formation are very limited, organic-rich shales have been penetrated in both the north and south of the basin, while both well and seismic data indicate the ubiquitous presence of sealing evaporites across the basin. The Ara Group Petroleum System spans the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian boundary and is blessed with carbonate reservoirs composed of metazoan ‘reefs’ comprising Cloudina and Namacalathus, which provide an open framework porosity approaching 50%. By contrast, the Gillen Formation was deposited during the Tonian Period of the Neoproterozoic, some 300–350 million years older than the Ara Group, and has reservoir facies limited to stromatolitic carbonates with fenestral to vuggy porosities that are typically less than 15%. Nevertheless, seismic data reveal numerous intra-evaporite opportunities within the Gillen Formation that, seismically, are virtually indistinguishable from those being exploited in South Oman, suggesting that a Gillen Intra-Salt Petroleum System is a viable exploration target throughout a majority of the Amadeus Basin.

Abstract:
The Baltimore Algebra Project is a student-run, student-staffed nonprofit that employs public high schoolers and recent graduates as math study group leaders and as organized advocates for quality education as a constitutional right. In this essay Jay Gillen draws on his experiences as a facilitator of the Algebra Project to argue that only a generation of young people—and particularly young people in poverty—has the potential and the necessary boldness to break the caste system of schooling. In this struggle, they follow their ancestors who "earned" the insurrections required to break the slave and sharecropper systems. How young people in poverty interpret Obama's election, asserts Gillen, will determine what Obama means for educational justice.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In Northern Ireland (NI), determinations of whether the crime of rape has occurred require consideration of the accused’s reasonable belief in the complainant’s consent (the ‘reasonable belief threshold’). Drawing on the rich body of feminist scholarship critiquing this threshold, this article makes two core contributions. First, through a thematic analysis of trial transcripts and news reports from the high-profile 2018 ‘Rugby Rape Trial’ in NI, the article illustrates how trial narratives around consent and reasonable belief in consent ‘responsibilise’ the complainant while minimising the (in)actions of the accused. Second, the article evaluates the proposal in the 2019 Gillen Review that this threshold should be reworded to take account of the accused’s failure to take steps to ascertain the complainant’s consent. It is argued that, while this proposal has the potential to subtly redistribute narratives of responsibility, such potential can only be realised through a change in prosecutorial practice to ensure attention to the ‘steps to ascertain consent’ provision.

Abstract:
AbstractWe prove several results concerning the relative position of points in the postsingular set P(f) of a meromorphic map f and the boundary of a Baker domain or the successive iterates of a wandering component. For Baker domains we answer a question of Mihaljević-Brandt and Rempe-Gillen. For wandering domains we show that if the iterates Un of such a domain have uniformly bounded diameter, then there exists a sequence of postsingular values pn such that ${\rm dist} (p_n, U_n)\to 0$ as $n\to \infty $. We also prove that if $U_n \cap P(f)=\emptyset $ and the postsingular set of f lies at a positive distance from the Julia set (in ℂ), then the sequence of iterates of any wandering domain must contain arbitrarily large disks. This allows to exclude the existence of wandering domains for some meromorphic maps with infinitely many poles and unbounded set of singular values.

Full text
Abstract:
Erhard Eylmann (1860–1926) was a German scientist who devoted much of his working life to researching Australia, where he travelled extensively during the period 1896 to 1913. His primary field of expertise was anthropology, about which he wrote at great length in his major work Die Eingeborenen der Kolonie Südaustralien (The Aborigines of the Colony of South Australia). This paper places Eylmann and his work in a tradition of German scientific endeavour which can be traced back to William Blandowski and Alexander von Humboldt. Eylmann’s insistence on the primacy of empirical methodology and his belief in the essential unity of all the scientific disciplines characterise his work. At the same time the paper argues that Eylmann’s approach to anthropological study was also indebted to practitioners outside Germany, in particular Francis Gillen and Baldwin Spencer. Similarly, there were other anthropologists in Eylmann’s own time – foremost among them Carl Strehlow – who adopted a very different paradigm in their efforts to understand indigenous Australians.

Abstract:
Geographers have been challenging problematic spatial concepts for decades. Gillen et al. usefully add to this work by disrupting the urban–rural binary in human geography, suggesting that we take people in the Global South more seriously, especially those ‘whose perspectives on urbanization are entangled with ongoing rural dynamics’. They advocate for advancing the concept of relational ruralization. In this commentary, I express my general support for Gillen et al.'s efforts to expose the limitations associated with the urban–rural divide. However, I go somewhat beyond their work to suggest that human geographers should consciously reduce the primacy of the urban–rural binary when conceptualizing space, especially when looking at activities that transcend the urban–rural. There are more productive ways to consider connections.
