Wijers, Jean Paul, Isabel Amaral, William Hanson, Bengt-Arne Hulleman, and Diana Mather. Protocol to Manage Relationships Today. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463724159.

Full text
Abstract:
Protocol to Manage Relationships Today explains the contemporary value of protocol, not only for monarchies or diplomatic institutes, but for any non-profit or for-profit organisation. This book presents modern protocol as a tool to build strong, authentic networks of reciprocal relationships. When used effectively protocol can: - Increase the effect of the networking activities of an organisation. Protocol gives a professional structure to relationship management, to achieve access to the 'right' networks and a reciprocal relationship with the most valued stakeholders. - Deepen relationships. In our world there is so much focus on pragmatism in building relationships - protocol focuses on the common ground to gain value. - Be used as a valuable tool in a post COVID-19 era, where the need for space and time to build real and authentic relationships is well understood. The book defines how tested values perfectly fit in today's society, where modern organisations want to build effective relationships and communities. This book is focused on developing an increasingly vital expertise for professionals who deal with complex relationship management issues on a strategic and tactical operational level. They come from different fields, such as government institutions, non-profit organisations and commercial environments. This book also gives protocol officers a contemporary approach towards the application of protocol. It is not designed as a complete guide to all the rules of protocol, but it describes how to translate the context into a tailor-made protocol for each meeting or event. The book explains protocol as a flexible method to handle unique situations. Protocol is presented on four levels: the 'why' of protocol; the strategic and tactical level; the practical implementation; and the execution of protocol. Protocol to Manage Relationships Today is written by Europe's foremost protocol experts with collective years of experience with the management of networking meetings and events at the highest level.

Abstract:
This volume collects interdisciplinary contributions that explain the complexity of Cosimo I patronage among the Laurentian complex. Thus it gives original and key interpretations on episodes central to the historiographical debate regarding some of the most important figures of the late Renaissance such as Michelangelo, Pontormo, Vasari and Vincenzo Borghini. San Lorenzo Basilica in Florence represented for Cosimo I a chance of continuity with the Medici Family, the place where to perpetuate the dynastic policy of his ancestors. The volume offers an updated picture on some relevant issues that will run through the second half of the XVI century that will eventually be developed by the Medici’s Grand Dukes in the next two centuries.

Goul, Pauline, and Usher, eds. Early Modern Écologies. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462985971.

Full text
Abstract:
Early Modern Écologies is the first collective volume to offer perspectives on the relationship between contemporary ecological thought and early modern French literature. If Descartes spoke of humans as being ‘masters and possessors of Nature’ in the seventeenth century, the writers taken up in this volume arguably demonstrated a more complex and urgent understanding of the human relationship to our shared planet. Opening up a rich archive of literary and non-literary texts produced by Montaigne and his contemporaries, this volume foregrounds not how ecocriticism renews our understanding of a literary corpus, but rather how that corpus causes us to re-think or to nuance contemporary eco-theory. The sparsely bilingual title (an acute accent on écologies) denotes the primary task at hand: to pluralize (i.e. de-Anglophone-ize) the Environmental Humanities. Featuring established and emerging scholars from Europe and the United States, Early Modern Écologies opens up new dialogues between ecotheorists such as Timothy Morton, Gilles Deleuze, and Bruno Latour and Montaigne, Ronsard, Du Bartas, and Olivier de Serres.

Full text
Abstract:
An exhaustive biography of French neuropsychiatrist Georges Gilles de la Tourette (1857–1904) has never been undertaken. Gilles de la Tourette worked closely with the nineteenth-century founder of neurology in Paris, Jean-Martin Charcot. His name is universally known because of the eponymous, disabling syndrome that affects 0.9% of children/adolescents. Unpublished family archives, as well as Gilles de la Tourette’s correspondence with the Parisian journalist Georges Montorgueil, conserved at the national Archives in Paris, were examined together with press and police archives to portray Georges Gilles de la Tourette’s family and professional life in an original light. These archives have never before been studied or made available to the public. How the eponymous syndrome was isolated, the errors initially made in its description, the hidden role of Jean-Martin Charcot, and the disputes with other authors are covered in detail based on multiple sources, original or already published. An in-depth analysis of the genesis of Gilles de la Tourette’s prolific neurological and psychiatric works within their historical context rounds out this biography. Major figures of neurology of the time are also featured—including Freud, Charcot and his son, Brissaud, and Babiński. Interwoven with Gilles de la Tourette’s life and times are discussions of politics, theater, literature, the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, and numerous letters exchanged with Jules Claretie of the Académie Française to highlight his significant involvement in each of these domains. The book concludes with a complete bibliography of all works written by Gilles de la Tourette, compiled for the first time.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter deals with complex surfaces and their finite coverings branched along divisors, that is, subvarieties of codimension 1. In particular, it considers coverings branched over transversally intersecting divisors. Applying this to linear arrangements in the complex projective plane, the chapter first blows up the projective plane at non-transverse intersection points, that is, at those points of the arrangement where more than two lines intersect. These points are called singular points of the arrangement. This gives rise to a complex surface and transversely intersecting divisors that contain the proper transforms of the original lines. The chapter also introduces the divisor class group, their intersection numbers, and the canonical divisor class. Finally, it describes the Chern numbers of a complex surface in order to define the proportionality deviation of a complex surface and to study its behavior with respect to finite covers.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explains that the book deals with quotients of the complex 2-ball yielding finite coverings of the projective plane branched along certain line arrangements. It gives a complete list of the known weighted line arrangements that can produce such ball quotients, and then provides a justification for the existence of the quotients. The Miyaoka-Yau inequality for surfaces of general type, and its analogue for surfaces with an orbifold structure, plays a central role. The book also examines the explicit computation of the proportionality deviation of a complex surface for finite covers of the complex projective plane ramified along certain line arrangements. Candidates for ball quotients among these finite covers arise by choosing weights on the line arrangements such that the proportionality deviation vanishes.

Full text
Abstract:
Transposition complexes refer to hearts in which there is a reversal in the relationship between the ventricles and great arteries, i.e. there is ventriculoarterial discordance. Thus, the right ventricle gives rise to the aorta and supports the systemic circulation, whilst the left ventricle becomes the subpulmonary ventricle. There are two types of transposition: complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and congenitally corrected TGA. This chapter discusses complete TGA, including interarterial repair (Mustard or Senning operation), arterial switch operation, and Rastelli operation. It also covers congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA), including atrioventricular (AV) and ventriculoarterial (VA) discordance.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter discusses the history of life on Earth, and the lessons to be learned from the neo-Darwinian synthesis of evolutionary biology. The long and complex sequence of events in the evolutionary history of life on Earth requires considered interpretation. The neo-Darwinian synthesis is well-supported by evidence and gives rich insight into this process, but does not itself furnish a complete explanation or understanding of living things. This is because a process of exploration can only explore; it cannot fully dictate and can only partially constrain what type of thing will be found. What is found is constrained by other considerations, such as what is possible, and what can make sense. A brief critique of some of Richard Dawkins’ work is given, and also of the movement known as ‘Intelligent Design’. Education policy is well served by a fair appraisal of informed opinion in this area.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the classical results of Hodge theory concerning algebraic maps. Hodge theory gives nontrivial restrictions on the topology of a nonsingular projective variety, or, more generally, of a compact Kähler manifold: the odd Betti numbers are even, the hard Lefschetz theorem, the formality theorem, stating that the real homotopy type of such a variety is, if simply connected, determined by the cohomology ring. Similarly, Hodge theory gives nontrivial topological constraints on algebraic maps. This chapter focuses on the latter, as it considers how the existence of an algebraic map f : X → Y of complex algebraic varieties is reflected in the topological invariants of X.

Abstract:
People who have complex behavioral health needs must navigate many different systems of care. To do this, they may require the support of providers who are knowledgeable about these systems of care and understand their roles from a systems perspective. The four factor model of systems-based practice gives providers a recovery-oriented conceptual framework for providing optimal care. The model is conceptualized as four roles—patient care advocate, team member, information integrator, and resource manager—that are performed by providers/psychiatrists to meet the comprehensive needs of the individual patient within and beyond the health care system and the traditional provider role. This model can also be used as a tool for helping providers think through complex clinical problems that are not easily addressed using the standard medical model of care.

Abstract:
This article discusses the impact of eugenics in Britain. It discusses eugenics as a biological way of thinking about social, economic, political, and cultural change. It gives scientific credibility to prejudices, anxieties, and fears that are prevalent primarily among the middle and upper classes. It delineates the tensions between “classic” and “reform”, although this is only one modality along which to align the complex factors that polarized the society—some of them ideological, some of them about tactics, and some based on personalities. It gives a detailed description of the differentiation of societies' activities into study and practice. The social problem group; research into contraceptive methods; family allowances; race mixture; and immigration are discussed. The practices are divided into negative and positive. Finally, this article concludes that eugenicists see feeblemindedness as hereditary, emblematic of degeneracy, and contributes to numerous social problems, such as poverty and unemployment.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses static solvent effects on the rate constant for chemical reactions in solution. It starts with a brief discussion of the thermodynamic formulation of transition-state theory. The static equilibrium structure of the solvent will modify the potential energy surface for the chemical reaction. This effect is analyzed within the framework of transition-state theory. The rate constant is expressed in terms of the potential of mean force at the activated complex. Various definitions of this potential and their relations to n-particle- and pair-distribution functions are considered. The potential of mean force may, for example, be defined such that the gradient of the potential gives the average force on an atom in the activated complex, Boltzmann averaged over all configurations of the solvent. It concludes with a discussion of a relation between the rate constants in the gas phase and in solution.

This chapter describes the 10 fundamental maxims from which we construct a taxonomy to describe each mode of mechanical ventilation. This method provides a framework for the comparison of published studies of mechanical ventilation, gives consistency in education and clinical practice. It also allows comparisons between different ventilator manufacturers and, most importantly, it provides a framework to match modes to specific patient needs.

Abstract:
Planning and execution of goal-directed actions are closely related to visual attention. This chapter gives an overview of research on this relationship, focusing on the role of attention in the preparation of eye movements, manual reaching, and grasping. The studies suggest that major functions of attention during motor planning are to select the spatial goals of the movement, and to prioritize those visual features that are important for the action. For complex movements involving more than a single spatial location, it seems that action preparation comes along with a temporally changing ‘attentional landscape’ which includes multiple foci of attention.

Informed by historical interests and contemporary trauma theories, this chapter reads written prophecy in the Hebrew Bible—as opposed to its oral iteration—as ancient Israel’s disaster and survival literature. Specifically, the literarization of prophecy connects word and sign-act to prophetic performance of the realities of trauma. When this complex alchemy “enacts” the horrors of war, exile, and confinement through the prism of word and deed, it (1) gives expression to unspeakable loss, (2) generates space for the work of grief, and (3) constructs new trajectories of meaning for survivors struggling to cope with the collapse of their social and symbolic worlds.

It focuses on synchronic issues; some additional features of Dalabon which are better understood in a diachronic perspective and hence require comparative data from other Gunwinyguan languages are discussed in Chapter 19. Particularly interesting are the rich set of adverbial prefixes to the verb, the complex methods for modifying valency (stem thematic alternations, applicatives, and reflexive/reciprocal suffixes), the rich incorporation possibilities for both nouns and (more limited) verbal stems, and the existence of a number of types of subordinating morphology.

Full text
Abstract:
Spherical objects — motivated by considerations in the context of mirror symmetry — are used to construct special autoequivalences. Their action on cohomology can be described precisely, considering more than one spherical object often leads to complicated (braid) groups acting on the derived category. The results related to Beilinson are almost classical. Section 3 of this chapter gives an account of the Beilinson spectral sequence and how it is used to deduce a complete description of the derived category of the projective space. This will use the language of exceptional sequences and semi-orthogonal decompositions encountered here. The final section gives a simplified account of the work of Horja, which extends the theory of spherical objects and their associated twists to a broader geometric context.

Abstract:
Laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic surgical procedures are commonly used in both urology and gynaecology. These minimally invasive techniques result in early mobilization and short hospital stay and robot-assisted operations are increasingly favoured by patients and surgeons. A complex physiological response is created by the combined effects of carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum, elevated intra-abdominal pressure, and sometimes a profound Trendelenburg position. Healthy patients tolerate this situation well, but compromised patients are at risk of developing heart failure, ischaemia, or both. Correct interpretation of vital signs can be challenging in this situation. This chapter gives an overview of the physiology during laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery and gives recommendations for anaesthesia and monitoring. The field of urology and gynaecology also includes major open surgery as well as transurethral surgery and techniques for the management of urinary tract stones. The anaesthetic management and perioperative care of major open surgery, including the increasingly adopted ‘enhanced recovery after surgery’ concept, are also covered. The syndrome of transurethral resection of the prostate can still place patients at risk despite increased knowledge and improved selection of irrigation fluid.

Abstract:
The UK’s transfer of undertakings legislation—TUPE—is of immense practical, commercial, and financial significance to employers and employees in both the public and private sectors, yet it is also one of the most notoriously complex and unpredictable areas of employment law. It is an area which has seen regular and significant developments. This new edition of The Law of TUPE Transfers gives a concise yet comprehensive examination of all aspects of TUPE, covering issues such as when the regulations apply, the legal effects of a transfer, the information and consultation requirements of the legislation, and claims arising from transfer-related dismissals, as well as examining the impact of the various case law and other developments since the last edition.
