Abstract:
AbstractA study was undertaken to identify the major larval habitats of the Anopheles gambiae (Giles) complex in rural Gambia. Mosquito larvae and pupae were sampled along transects and in specific habitats in the central region of the country during the rainy seasons of 1996 and 1997. The sampling showed that the major breeding sites were located on the flooded alluvial soils bordering the river. The largest numbers of larvae were found during September, one month after the peak rains. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of specimens showed that Anopheles melas (Theobald) was the dominant species in the flooded areas (81.5%), followed by A. gambiae sensu stricto (Giles) (18.0%) and A.arabiensis (Patton) (0.5%). By sampling in specific habitats it was evident that A.arabiensis was mainly breeding in rain-fed rice fields along the edge of the alluvial soils. Anophelesmelas and A.gambiae s.s. often coexisted but whereas A. melas were found in water with a salinity of up to 72% sea water (25.2 g NaCl l−1), A.gambiae s.s. only occurred in water with up to 30% sea water (10.5 g NaCl l−1). Anophelesmelas larvae were found in association with plant communities dominated by sedges and grasses (Eleocharis sp., Paspalum sp., Sporobolus sp.) and sea-purslane Sesuviumportulacastrum (L.) and the presence of cattle hoof prints, whereas A.gambiae s.s. larvae mainly occurred in association with Paspalum sp. and Eleocharis sp. The study showed that even during the peak rainy season, breeding of the A.gambiae complex is almost entirely restricted to the extensive alluvial areas along the river.

Abstract:
Archaeological evaluation of the Southern Courtyard of the Parliament House complex, to the south of St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh’s Old Town, has provided a valuable insight into the lives, health and mortality of the inhabitants of the late medieval city. The evaluation revealed a backland area in the centre of medieval Edinburgh, with deposits rich in artefactual and ecofactual material derived from the everyday lives of the populace, underlying early burghal surfaces. The presence of artefacts including a small leather assemblage and a seal matrix may indicate production and trading activities between the High Street and the Cowgate in the late medieval period. Above these surfaces, and underlying fragmentary evidence of the post-medieval Meal Market, numerous late medieval inhumations were recorded; these belonged to the southward expansion of St Giles’ graveyard. This report details the analysis of the skeletal remains, illuminating the health and demography of the population of the city from around the mid-15th to the early-to-mid-16th century.

Pairing community engagement with reflective practice enables students to develop a thorough and passionate understanding of their communities. Theorists specialized in service-learning find that students’ educational attainment is greatly enhanced when individuals invest emotionally into their studies (Eyler and Giles, 1999). Thoughtful community engagement creates an outlet to make genuine connections and formulate real-world applications to complex issues. The following is a thoughtful exploration of the benefits of reflective practice in community-based learning through one student’s experience of service in Lexington, Virginia.

Full text
Abstract:
FeFe-hydrogenases are members of a family of metalloenzymes that catalyze the conversion of protons and electrons to dihydrogen at a remarkable rate. The catalytic center of this enzyme, the H-cluster, contains a classical [4Fe-4S] cluster that is covalently and magnetically coupled through a cysteine residue to a 2Fe-subcluster. The 2Fe-subcluster contains normally biotoxic carbonyl and cyanide ligands and a dithiolate ligand that is unique in biology. Many biomimetic model complexes have been synthesized that attempted to mimic the H-cluster reactivity, but none have been successful at as low of a reduction potential and as high of a reaction rate as the metalloenzyme. Thus the goal of this research is to develop a blueprint for understanding the electronic structure of the H-cluster, through functionally analogous model complexes. The first step towards this goal is to carry out multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopic measurements and electronic structure calculations. We first developed the multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy method for a prototypical biomimetic complex, Fe (u-S(CH ) S)(CO) . This allowed for the complete definition of the orbital composition for the unoccupied frontier orbitals. We used this information to calibrate our computational results in order to accurately describe similar biomimetic model complexes. We used the multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopic approach and the calibrated computational models to analyze four structural features of the 2Fe-subcluster of the H-cluster through representative biomimetic model complexes. We find unique trends for each series that helped to develop an understanding of how each compositional feature contribute to structure. These insights can be used for optimizing model complexes with potential to match the reactivity of the FeFe-hydrogenase enzymes. We also used our calibrated electronic structure method to analyze the spin density at the bridgehead position of the unique dithiolate ligand and dissect the intricate details of the electronic structure for the protein-environment embedded H-cluster model.

Abstract:
The following remarks are intended as philosophical comments on Gilles Deleuze’s groundbreaking reflections on a control society emerging at the end of the 20th century (cf. Deleuze 1992). Following Foucault, Deleuze’s interpretations of the ‘contemporary’ socio-technological transformations are mostly of a spatio-technical nature; the aim of this article is to complement his diagnosis with a time-philosophical analysis. Here, the guiding question is how to best characterize the time-political dimension of the new forms of social (“apprenticeships and permanent training”) and economic control, which has only further increased with the financialization of the 21st century (“Man is no longer man enclosed, but man in debt”) (1992: 6-7). Deleuze’s text already contains a number of clues that are relevant in this context, for example his references to the work of the dromonihilist Paul Virilio, specifically to the “ultrarapid forms of free-floating control” (1992: 4) that the latter outlined. Behind the acceleration paradigm sketched out by Virilio, however, we recognize an explanatory model of a different temporality, that is, both a different model of explanation and a different model of time. According to our working hypothesis, complex societies or societies that, under the influence of algorithms and computer-based infrastructures, are temporally complex can no longer be understood from the perspective of the present. The type of economy that Deleuze subsumed under the concept of ‘control society’ corresponds to a logic that is no longer centered on the present or the contemporary. Rather, under the digital technological conditions of the 21st century, control turns out to be time control and control of (as well as from) the future.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We propose a statistical framework to analyse morphological and organisational anomalies altering the anatomy of neural circuits in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. The components of each circuit, from both white and grey matter, are represented as 3D meshes and integrated in a single shape complex. This allows to study their organisation and in particular the structural connectivity. The proposed methodology is based on a statistical approach called atlas construction which results in a template complex, capturing the invariants of the population and in template-to-subject deformations, describing the morphological variability. First, we embed the atlas construction in a Bayesian framework which allows to automatically estimate important parameters otherwise fixed by the user. Second, we reduce the important computational resources required to process fiber bundles by defining an approximation scheme based on a new computational model called weighted currents. Third, we describe a new deformation scheme for the atlas construction which permits to model variations in structural connectivity and at the same time to capture global anatomical changes. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing two groups of 44 patients and 22 controls respectively. Results highlight anomalies about both the shape of grey matter structures and structural connectivity

Kalas, Pamela. "For genes that encode one component of a multimeric protein complex, measuring only one phenotype often gives a biased view of function: SU(VAR)3-9 and chromatin architecture as an example." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13069.

Full text
Abstract:
Eukaryotic genomes are organized into chromatin, a highly dynamic complex of DNA and proteins, which plays a critical role in the regulation of gene expression. This thesis focuses on the study of a non-histone chromatin protein, the SET domain-containing H3K9 methyltransferase (HMTase) SU(VAR)3-9, and its role in the packaging and regulation of a euchromatic locus, the histone genes cluster (HIS-C). SU(VAR)3-9 was discovered in Drosophila melanogaster, but it is highly conserved from yeast to mammals. It has two conserved domains, the chromo- and the SET domains, and both are required for its function in gene silencing. The SET domain is responsible for the catalytic activity of SU(VAR)3-9, while the exact function of the chromo domain is still unclear. To gain an insight on the role(s) of SU(VAR)3-9 in the regulation of gene silencing, we first characterized a collection of Su(var)3-9 EMS-induced mutants that had been isolated in a genetic screen for strong, dominant suppressors of position-effect variegation (PEV). These mutants were characterized at the molecular, enzymatic, and cellular level, and their effect on gene silencing was also examined. We found that all mutants have single amino acid substitutions in the conserved preSET/SET/postSET domain, and that they all display a dramatic or complete loss of HMTase activity, strongly suggesting that suppression of PEV is linked to SU(VAR)3-9’s ability to methylate H3K9. The HIS-C is a natural, euchromatic target of SU(VAR)3-9, and mutations in Su(var)3-9 can alter its chromatin structure (Ner et al., 2002). To investigate the exact role(s) of SU(VAR)3-9 in the regulation of this locus, we analyzed the effects of a series of Su(var)3-9 missense mutants on the chromatin architecture of the HIS-C and on the expression of the histone genes. We detected a drastic reduction in the levels of H3K9me2 and HP1 associated with the his genes in all Su(var)3-9 missense mutants, although the mutant SU(VAR)3-9s still associate with the HIS-C. In addition, these mutants have elevated amounts of histone H2A and histone H3 RNA, suggesting that the enzyme function of SU(VAR)3-9 is critical for the regulation of the histone genes.

Marceau, Jean-Claude. "Deleuze et Lacan : l'entre-deux de l'inconscient." Paris 1, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA010506.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Protocol to Manage Relationships Today explains the contemporary value of protocol, not only for monarchies or diplomatic institutes, but for any non-profit or for-profit organisation. This book presents modern protocol as a tool to build strong, authentic networks of reciprocal relationships. When used effectively protocol can: - Increase the effect of the networking activities of an organisation. Protocol gives a professional structure to relationship management, to achieve access to the 'right' networks and a reciprocal relationship with the most valued stakeholders. - Deepen relationships. In our world there is so much focus on pragmatism in building relationships - protocol focuses on the common ground to gain value. - Be used as a valuable tool in a post COVID-19 era, where the need for space and time to build real and authentic relationships is well understood. The book defines how tested values perfectly fit in today's society, where modern organisations want to build effective relationships and communities. This book is focused on developing an increasingly vital expertise for professionals who deal with complex relationship management issues on a strategic and tactical operational level. They come from different fields, such as government institutions, non-profit organisations and commercial environments. This book also gives protocol officers a contemporary approach towards the application of protocol. It is not designed as a complete guide to all the rules of protocol, but it describes how to translate the context into a tailor-made protocol for each meeting or event. The book explains protocol as a flexible method to handle unique situations. Protocol is presented on four levels: the 'why' of protocol; the strategic and tactical level; the practical implementation; and the execution of protocol. Protocol to Manage Relationships Today is written by Europe's foremost protocol experts with collective years of experience with the management of networking meetings and events at the highest level.

This volume collects interdisciplinary contributions that explain the complexity of Cosimo I patronage among the Laurentian complex. Thus it gives original and key interpretations on episodes central to the historiographical debate regarding some of the most important figures of the late Renaissance such as Michelangelo, Pontormo, Vasari and Vincenzo Borghini. San Lorenzo Basilica in Florence represented for Cosimo I a chance of continuity with the Medici Family, the place where to perpetuate the dynastic policy of his ancestors. The volume offers an updated picture on some relevant issues that will run through the second half of the XVI century that will eventually be developed by the Medici’s Grand Dukes in the next two centuries.

Abstract:
Early Modern Écologies is the first collective volume to offer perspectives on the relationship between contemporary ecological thought and early modern French literature. If Descartes spoke of humans as being ‘masters and possessors of Nature’ in the seventeenth century, the writers taken up in this volume arguably demonstrated a more complex and urgent understanding of the human relationship to our shared planet. Opening up a rich archive of literary and non-literary texts produced by Montaigne and his contemporaries, this volume foregrounds not how ecocriticism renews our understanding of a literary corpus, but rather how that corpus causes us to re-think or to nuance contemporary eco-theory. The sparsely bilingual title (an acute accent on écologies) denotes the primary task at hand: to pluralize (i.e. de-Anglophone-ize) the Environmental Humanities. Featuring established and emerging scholars from Europe and the United States, Early Modern Écologies opens up new dialogues between ecotheorists such as Timothy Morton, Gilles Deleuze, and Bruno Latour and Montaigne, Ronsard, Du Bartas, and Olivier de Serres.

Abstract:
AbstractCompiler correctness is, in its simplest form, defined as the inclusion of the set of traces of the compiled program into the set of traces of the original program, which is equivalent to the preservation of all trace properties. Here traces collect, for instance, the externally observable events of each execution. This definition requires, however, the set of traces of the source and target languages to be exactly the same, which is not the case when the languages are far apart or when observations are fine-grained. To overcome this issue, we study a generalized compiler correctness definition, which uses source and target traces drawn from potentially different sets and connected by an arbitrary relation. We set out to understand what guarantees this generalized compiler correctness definition gives us when instantiated with a non-trivial relation on traces. When this trace relation is not equality, it is no longer possible to preserve the trace properties of the source program unchanged. Instead, we provide a generic characterization of the target trace property ensured by correctly compiling a program that satisfies a given source property, and dually, of the source trace property one is required to show in order to obtain a certain target property for the compiled code. We show that this view on compiler correctness can naturally account for undefined behavior, resource exhaustion, different source and target values, side-channels, and various abstraction mismatches. Finally, we show that the same generalization also applies to many secure compilation definitions, which characterize the protection of a compiled program against linked adversarial code.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter describes the regulatory and organisational infrastructure of biobank research in Sweden, and how the introduction of the GDPR affects the possibilities to use biobank material in future research. The Swedish legislator has chosen a rather minimalistic approach in relation to the research exception in Article 89 GDPR and has only enacted limited general exceptions to the data protection rules. This may be partly explained by the comprehensive right to public access to official documents which gives researchers vast access to information held in registries, albeit conditioned on abiding by secrecy and confidentiality rules. The Swedish legislation implementing the GDPR includes a general exception from the data protection rules in relation to the right to access to official documents, which researchers also benefit from. However, confidentiality rules for different categories of information differ between sectors, which hinders an effective use of the registries in research. The regulatory regime for using biobank and registry data in Sweden thus involves both data protection and secrecy rules, which makes the legal landscape permissible but complex. The operationalisation of the research exception in Article 89 GDPR is analysed against this background. Special attention is given to the possibility to link personal information derived from biobanks with personal information from other data sources, including large national population based statistical registries as well as information from national clinical registers.

AbstractThis chapter gives an overview of some of the key concepts in the field of discrimination. It starts by distinguishing between direct and indirect discrimination in legal definitions. Next, we define the interrelated concepts of multiple discrimination and intersectionality, which increasingly are used in both legal studies and the social sciences, before giving an account of the interrelated concepts of organizational, institutional, and systemic discrimination. The chapter ends by reflecting on the complex relationship between discrimination and the endurance of categorical inequalities in societies where all members formally enjoy the principle of equality.

Abstract:
Whereas the problem in this chapter is easy to state, the solution is convoluted. Kant asserts that simple empirical perceptions always already assume an original and necessary categorical connectivity of the whole manifold thanks to pure concepts of understanding. Deleuze agrees that sense data are not elementary but syntheses from virtual moments of complex affections. Classical empiricism begins with sense data which are in fact rooted in a conflation of transcendental and immanent prerequisites. For Kant the imagination successfully brings about the agreement of understanding and intuition because it schematises the form of the inner sense and indirectly leads to the unity of apperception.

Abstract:
The Foreword provides an introduction to the background and rationale of this volume and gives an account of the phenomenon under discussion. In fleshing out what is meant by ‘complex inferiorities’ and the poetics of the ‘weaker voice’, the discussion also connects the issues at stake here, within the particular context of Latin studies, with concerns, intellectual developments, and conceptual frameworks of modern critical theory that variously underwrite the individual chapters and inform the cognitive interest of the volume as a whole. The Foreword then introduces the individual contributions and offers commentary on their multiple relations with each other. In setting out the main clusters of themes treated in the collection’s essays and teasing out the often overlapping dimensions that variously bind together individual chapters, it underscores in particular the relevance of intersectionality for the study of the strategic assumptions and manipulations of the weaker voice.

This chapter discusses Milnor's conjecture on monotonicity of entropy and gives a short exposition of the ideas used in its proof. It discusses the history of this conjecture, gives an outline of the proof in the general case, and describes the state of the art in the subject. The proof makes use of an important result by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien on the density of hyperbolicity in the space of real polynomial maps, which is a far-reaching generalization of the Thurston Rigidity Theorem. (In the quadratic case, density of hyperbolicity had been proved in studies done by M. Lyubich and J. Graczyk and G. Swiatek.) The chapter concludes with a list of open problems.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces a notion of entropy for possibly singular hyperbolic laminations by Riemann surfaces. It also studies the transverse regularity of the Poincaré metric and the finiteness of the entropy. The chapter first focuses on compact laminations, which are transversally smooth, before turning to the case of singular foliations, showing how the Poincaré metric on leaves is transversally Hölder continuous. In addition, the chapter considers the problem in the proof that the entropy is finite for singular foliations is quite delicate and requires a careful analysis of the dynamics around the singularities. Finally, the chapter discusses a notion of metric entropy for harmonic probability measures and gives some open questions.

Abstract:
Immunoblotting studies using denaturing and nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis conditions were performed on 100 plasmas from 88 patients with suspected DIC, in order to determine whether the anticoagulant regulatory proteins C and S (PC and PS) cure altered in vivo during DIC. 70 of these plasmas from 65 patients contained 5-35% of PC antigen in the form of activated protein C (APC) complexed with inhibitor(s).24 normal plasmas showed no detectable APC-inhibitor complexes. The complexes in DIC plasmas had a MW of 110 K on SDS-PAGE, as did complexes formed when APC was incubated with plasma immunodepleted of PC, or when PC in normal plasma was activated with Protac C. On nondenaturing gels, the complex present in 69 of 70 patient plasmas had the same mobility as one of two major bands of complexed APC observed in Protac C-activated normal plasma. One patient plasma contained two forms of PC antigen complex. This patient had suffered a perforated uterus during an abortion. After Protac C activation of the patient plasmas, two APC complexed bands were seen. The 16 patients with >15% complexed PC antigen included 3 with severe infection, 5 with solid tumors, 3 with leukemias, 2 with vascular disease and 3 with other diagnoses. These patients had a higher mortality (69%) than the group as a whole and higher levels of fibrin degradation products. 13 of these 16 plasmas and 56 of the entire group of 100 contained a higher than normal proportion of PS in a cleaved form with an apparent molecular weight lower than intact PS on reduced SDS-PAGE. Mean levels of PS antigen determined by electroimmunoassay for 95 of the plasmas were as follows: entire group, 86% (92%); patients with infection (n=34), 76% (81%); patients with malignancy (n=37), 102% (105%); all others (n=24), 70% (74%) wherfe numbers in parentheses exclude patients with liver disease and 100% normal pooled plasma. These studies suggest that PS is cleaved and decreased in vivo and that PC is activated in vivo and complexed with a 50K MW inhibitor(s) during DIC.

Abstract:
The linearized stability analysis of dynamical systems modeled using finite element based multibody formulations is addressed in this paper. The use of classical methods for stability analysis of these system, such as the characteristic exponent method or Floquet theory, results in computationally prohibitive costs. Since comprehensive multibody models are “virtual prototypes” of actual systems, the applicability to numerical models of the stability analysis tools that are used in experimental settings is investigated in this work. Various experimental tools for stability analysis are reviewed. It is proved that Prony’s method, generally regarded as a curve fitting method, is equivalent, and sometimes identical, to Floquet theory and to the partial Floquet method. This observation gives Prony’s method a sound theoretical, footing, and considerably improves the robustness of its predictions when applied to comprehensive models of complex multibody system. Numerical applications are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed procedure.

Abstract:
This paper presents a new method, termed as patterned bootstrap (PB), which is suitable for precision position synthesis of planar linkages. The method solves a determined system of equations using a new bootstrapping strategy. In principle, a randomly generated starting point is advanced to a final solution through solving a number of intermediate systems. The structure and the associated parameters of each intermediate system is defined as a pattern. In practice, a PB procedure generally consists of two levels: an upper level which controls the transition of patterns, and a lower level which solves intermediate systems using globally convergent root-finding algorithms. Besides introducing the new method, tunnelling functions have been added to several systems of polynomials derived by formal researchers in order to exclude degenerated solutions. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that many precision position synthesis problems can be solved efficiently without resorting to time-consuming polynomial homotopy continuation methods or interval methods. Finding over 95 percentages of the complete solutions of the 11 precision position function generation problem of a Stephenson-III linkage has been achieved for the first time.

Abstract:
In the paper shows, that one of the important directions of the development of the electric power industry both in the world and in Ukraine is the improvement and construction of electric power networks and systems according to the Smart Grid concept. The main idea of such systems is a reliable, energy-efficient and high-quality energy supply, which based on the growing role of management as a leading factor in the innovative development of electric power and the construction of high-performance information and computing infrastructure. One of the main components of Smart Grid is the diagnosis of emergency modes and damage monitoring. This is because damage to electrical networks affects the quality and reliability of electricity supply to consumers. Therefore, the task of quickly and accurately determining the place of damage is important. The effective solution of this problem gives a significant economic effect due to the reduction of power supply interruptions, the reduction of transport costs for bypassing electrical networks, and the minimization of the total time for the organization of repair and restoration works. It shown that one of the ways to increase efficiency is the use of means of identifying emergency conditions in sections of both cable and overhead electrical networks. A diagram of the location of damage indicators on the section of the electrical distribution network presented, which allows determining the direction of the search for the location of the damage. A comparative analysis of current measuring transformers of optical and electromagnetic type carried out. It shown that a significant number of advantages of optical measuring current transformers, which can be used in damage indicators, can be provided by measuring current transformers of the electromagnetic type. It is shown that in order to ensure the creation of a damage indicator based on the Smart Grid concept, which allows to reduce the time of searching for the cause and location of an emergency situation to a minimum, as well as to ensure connection to operating overhead and cable lines without removing voltage by connecting the output of the secondary winding of the measuring current transformer of the detachable design to the measuring converters directly placed near the current measuring transformers with the help of a mechanical spring fastener. A block diagram of a specialized information and measurement system with a damage indicator was created, taking into account the requirements of the Smart Grid concept, which allows to reduce the time of searching for the cause to a minimum.

Abstract:
Abstract In this report a design system for parametric design of complex products is presented. The system is based on product models for complex products and components. These models were implemented as general framework models using the data base management system TORNADO. The user creates models for specific products by filling out forms. Consequently, all products can be represented in a uniform way. This gives the advantage that all service software (for storage in the product data base, retrieval of component data etc.) associated to a certain product model can be shared. The only lines of code the designer writes when creating a new component family are the design rules of the component. In association with the models a design system for complex products is presented. Benefitting from the uniform representations of the products, the system lets the user control the design process, while a system kernel handles the constraint management. The product models and the design system have been applied to hydraulic cylinder design.

In this paper, we present a method of integral representations of subclasses of the class of star functions of many complex variables, consisting in the fact that for the subclass of functions defined by a certain set of properties, an integral formula is derived, which gives the criterion of belonging of this function to this subclass. Very often, structural formulas are given by operators in the form of integral representations that convert one class of functions to another. Here are some examples of new subclasses of the class of star functions for which integral representations are constructed.

The technology proposes prediction with the hierarchy of time discretization intervals and splicing procedure for the prediction results at the different frequency levels to the single prediction output time series. The hierarchy of time discretizations gives a possibility to use fractal properties of the given time series to make prediction on the different frequencies of the series. Abstract:
The field of climate change adaptation metrics is complex and fast-changing. Given the highly contextual nature of adaptation and the array of applied definitions of adaptation and “success”, there is no single global set of adaptation metrics and indicators or definition of adaptation success. There is a burgeoning literature on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), how to measure it and adaptation metrics. However, the landscape is scattered and the subject is very complex. Climate impacts and the effects of adaptation measures themselves spill across national borders, although adaptation is still treated as a largely domestic issue despite the global rhetoric of the GGA. This makes an aggregate global goal extremely technically challenging and tracing the plethora of existing indicators and metrics difficult. Furthermore, there is relatively few specific literature directly on the topic of global measurement of adaptation. This rapid review provides information on some of the metrics and measurement approaches in use across national and sub-national government levels. It gives a brief discussion of the issues around measuring the GGA, flags some key resources in this area and also touches on some initiatives and guidance aimed at helping users to select metrics. This is not a systematic review and given the time limitations and the number of adaptation metrics approaches in use, it is only able to provide a small snapshot of current research.

Abstract:
In this study we investigated coda-wave attenuation (QC) from the eastern Canadian Arctic in Nunavut and the Hudson Bay complex including portions of northern Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Labrador. We used earthquake recordings from 15 broadband and 3 short period seismograph stations of the Canadian National Seismic Network (CNSN) and 29 broadband stations of the POLARIS network across the region. Our dataset is comprised of 637 earthquakes recorded between 1985 and 2021 with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 6.1, depths from 0 to 20 km and epicentral distances of 5 to 100 km. This gives a total of 246 high signal-to-noise (S/N) traces (S/N[lesser/equal]5.0) useful for QC calculation (with a maximum ellipse parameter, a2, of 100) across the region. Coda windows were selected to start at tc = 2tS (two times the travel time of the direct S wave), and were filtered at center frequencies of 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 Hz. Our study reveals a consistent pattern. We find that in the northern section of the study area, the highest Q0 values (e.g., Q0 of 110 and 112) are at station POIN and station RES, respectively, which are located in the older Archean province. The lowest Q0 values that we find (e.g., Q0 of 55 and 61) are at station AKVQ and IVKQ respectively, located in northern Quebec. Smaller Q0 values for stations in the south are explained by the younger age of the rocks and proximity to the main fault systems. An average for all the data results in a Q relationship of QC = 82f1.08 for the frequency band of 2 to 16 Hz for the entire region.

Abstract:
Situated in a complex region of the world, Puntland State in Somalia is dealing with a range of threats and instabilities such as droughts, floods, locusts, the movement of internally displaced people (IDPs), and armed actors. COVID-19 has added yet another strain on its tremendously fragile infrastructure. The impact of the pandemic has been far reaching, affecting livelihoods and hampering unpaid and underpaid care work and responsibilities. The multitude of crises and rates of inflation have left the majority of families food insecure and without income, halted education and health services, and exacerbated existing vulnerabilities and the incidence of violence. This gender analysis was conducted and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), in partnership with Oxfam in Somalia and KAALO, to better help local government bodies, agencies, NGOs, and INGOs grasp the differentiated impact of the crises on women, men, boys, and girls, and host and IDP communities, during this time of intense loss and instability. The analysis provides an overview of the experiences of the affected communities, and gives recommendations on how to address immediate concerns and plan future programming.

Abstract:
In this research the technology of complex Markov chains, i.e. Markov chains with a memory is applied to forecast the financial time-series. The high-order Markov chains can be simplified to first-order ones by generalizing the states in Markov chains. Considering the *generalized state* as the sequence of states makes a possibility to model high-order Markov chains like first-order ones. The adaptive method of defining the states is proposed, it is concerned with the statistic properties of price returns. The algorithm of prediction includes the next steps: (1) Generate the hierarchical set of time discretizations; (2) Reducing the discretiza- tion of initial data and doing prediction at the every time-level (3) Recurrent conjunction of prediction series of different discretizations in a single time-series. The hierarchy of time discretizations gives a possibility to review long-memory properties of the series without increasing the order of the Markov chains, to make prediction on the different frequencies of the series. The technology is tested on several time-series, including: EUR/USD Forex course, the World’s indices, including Dow Jones, S&P 500, RTS, PFTS and other.

Baader, Franz, and Marcel Lippmann. Runtime Verification Using a Temporal Description Logic Revisited. Technische Universität Dresden, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.203.

Full text
Abstract:
Formulae of linear temporal logic (LTL) can be used to specify (wanted or unwanted) properties of a dynamical system. In model checking, the system’s behaviour is described by a transition system, and one needs to check whether all possible traces of this transition system satisfy the formula. In runtime verification, one observes the actual system behaviour, which at any point in time yields a finite prefix of a trace. The task is then to check whether all continuations of this prefix to a trace satisfy (violate) the formula. More precisely, one wants to construct a monitor, i.e., a finite automaton that receives the finite prefix as input and then gives the right answer based on the state currently reached. In this paper, we extend the known approaches to LTL runtime verification in two directions. First, instead of propositional LTL we use the more expressive temporal logic ALC-LTL, which can use axioms of the Description Logic (DL) ALC instead of propositional variables to describe properties of single states of the system. Second, instead of assuming that the observed system behaviour provides us with complete information about the states of the system, we assume that states are described in an incomplete way by ALC-knowledge bases. We show that also in this setting monitors can effectively be constructed. The (double-exponential) size of the constructed monitors is in fact optimal, and not higher than in the propositional case. As an auxiliary result, we show how to construct Büchi automata for ALC-LTL-formulae, which yields alternative proofs for the known upper bounds of deciding satisfiability in ALC-LTL.

Abstract:
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a complex legal-institutional system that, on the one hand, offers industrialized countries options for cost-effective emission reductions and, on the other, provides developing countries with opportunities for sustainable development. Investors face the difficulty of identifying suitable CDM projects from approximately 130 possible host countries and nearly 60 possible project activities. In order to develop points of reference for strategic investments, this paper identifies and categorizes the risks arising in the value creation process of bilateral energy projects into four action-related levels. At the host level, the focus is on political-institutional and sector-specific risks, while at the investor state level, the legal design of the CDM's complementary function is relevant. The project level covers technology- and process-related risks, with the identification of the reference case and the proof of additionality posing particular problems. The future design of the CDM and the reform of the procedure at the UNFCCC level pose a fundamental risk. A two-stage assessment procedure is proposed for risk assessment: a rough analysis captures sociographic, climate policy, institutional and sector-specific criteria of the host. The differentiation of the project stage allows the localization of the project in the value chain and a differentiation regarding the use of methods. The assessment of project registration is based on the methods used and gives recognition rates per method and project category; project performance is measured in terms of the ratio of emission reductions actually realized to those planned in the project documentation. A detailed analysis following the coarse analysis provides qualitative guidance for project evaluation. These include the Executive Board's methodological principles, correct application of methodologies, identification of the reference case, proof of additionality, as well as the financial conditions of the relevant sector and publicity-related aspects. Despite individual hosts and project technologies, the developed two-step risk analysis allows, with relatively little effort and in line with business practice, an initial assessment of CDM project risks, so that overall it lays a fundamental building block for the elaboration of a strategic implementation and sustainable investment under the CDM.

Abstract:
The paper aims at the design method of the space deployable-foldable actuator and vibration control device, and the selected material is the shape memory alloy. These devices can repeatedly adjust the deploy and fold states by changing the temperature, and also present a large energy dissipation to keep the stability of the structures in the vibration control. It can be observed that the fabricated two-way shape memory alloy actuator can present steady fold-deploy procedures more than five times, in which the recoverable rate is higher than 95.83%, and the required time in the complete deploying process is 15 s. Meanwhile, the vibration control device based on the shape memory alloys also gives an excellent performance, the lightweight device is only 315 g, and the vibration in the vertical direction can be limited to the millimeter-level (0.917 mm), it can also endure the repeated loadings in the applications and keep a good operating condition.
