Abstract:
The mid-fourth-century bishop Hilary of Poitiers is better known for his Trinitarian works and theology, but this book assesses his view of the human condition using his commentaries in particular. The commentary on Psalm 118 is shown to be more closely related to Origen’s than previously thought; this in turn explains how his articulations of sin, body, and soul, the Fall, and the will all parallel or echo Origen’s views in this work, but not necessarily in his Matthew commentary. Hilary has a doctrine of original sin (‘sins of our origin’, peccata originis), which differs from the individual personal sins and for which we are individually accountable. He also articulates a fallen will which is in thrall to disobedience and needs God’s help, something God always gives as long as we show the initiative. Hilary’s idea of the fallen will may have developed in tangent with Origen’s thought, which uses Stoic ideas on the process of human action in order to articulate the constraints on purely rational responses. Hilary in turn influences Augustine, who writes against the Pelagian bishop Julian of Eclanum, citing Hilary as an example of an earlier writer with original sin. Since Hilary is known to have used Origen’s work, and Augustine is known to have used Hilary’s, Hilary appears to be one of the stepping-stones between these two great giants of the early church as the doctrines of original sin and the fallen will developed.

FitzGerald, Brian. The Scholastic Exegesis of Prophecy. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808244.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter traces developments within the tradition of scholastic biblical exegesis that arose in the twelfth century. Focusing on the Psalms, a locus classicus for discussions of non-apocalyptic prophetic knowledge, the chapter examines the commentaries of Parisian masters Gilbert of Poitiers and Peter Lombard and then compares some thirteenth-century works by members of the Dominican Order. It emphasizes two important developments. First, exegetes paid a great deal of attention to the ‘literary’ qualities of prophetic language, trying to assess what made that language sacred. Secondly, the rise of professional exegetes in an academic setting led them to appropriate the sacred authority of the interpreted texts. Relying on the principle that inspired texts required inspired interpreters, these professionals began promoting themselves as possessors of contemporary prophetic authority.

Abstract:
This is the first full biography of John Wesley Gilbert (1863–1923), a pioneering African American scholar, archaeologist, teacher, civic leader, and missionary. The first part of the book traces Prof. Gilbert’s life from his birth into slavery in rural Georgia through his early education in the segregated public schools of Augusta, Georgia, on to his studies at the Augusta Institute and Atlanta Baptist Seminary (forerunners of Atlanta’s famed Morehouse College), at the Methodist-sponsored Paine Institute in Augusta, and at Brown University. Its central chapters focus on Gilbert’s sojourn in Greece during 1890–1891 as a member of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, a research institution founded in 1881 by a consortium of American colleges and universities. The book examines Gilbert’s relationships with his American School professors and classmates, his experiences of living in Greece, his topographical research on the urban demes (neighborhoods) of ancient Athens, and his archaeological work at the ancient Greek city of Eretria. The final portion of the book explores Gilbert’s life after Athens, as he earned a national reputation as an African American educational, civic, and religious leader. It examines his arduous 1911–1912 cooperative mission to the Belgian Congo as a representative of the Colored Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, with his white companion, Bishop Walter Russell Lambuth of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MECS). Throughout the book, Prof. Gilbert’s experiences and contributions are placed into the broader context of nineteenth-and early twentieth-century US history and especially into the context of African American intellectual and cultural life during that period.
