Abstract:
This article describes the contents of the manuscript Salamanca, Biblioteca General Histórica de la Universidad, 2691, which preserves a collection of mostly unpublished texts taken from two encyclopaedic compilations by Juan Gil of Zamora (OFM) († c. 1318): the Historia naturalis, canonica et ciuilis and the Liber illustrium personarum. In addition, it notes the sources used by the Franciscan writer, some already known, such as the Chronicon mundi by Lucas de Tuy, the Historia de rebus Hispanie by Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, the Legenda aurea by Jacobus of Voragine or the stories gathered in the so-called Hispanic Passionary, but others noted for the first time, such as the Rationale diuinorum officiorum by Guillaume Durand the Speculator and the Translatio s. Nicolai Barium an. 1087 by John of Bari. This article also studies the different versions of the same works in the remaining writings of Juan Gil of Zamora indicating whether they have been preserved or lost. Finally, in an Appendix, it offers the editio princeps of a hymn and a prayer composed by the Zamoran friar in honour of the guardian angels.

Abstract:
Durante o medievo floresceu o culto a Santa Bárbara.

Abstract:
In his De preconiis Hispanie, Fray Juan Gil de Zamora endeavored to inculcate in Infante Sancho, Alfonso X’s second son and heir, an understanding of the history of Spain and to cite examples of rulers who used their authority well and those who abused it. He reminded the young prince that he would be accountable to God and that he should not pursue his own interests to the detriment of his people. He specifically denounced royal avarice and argued that a king should not impoverish his people with unaccustomed levies of taxation. Moreover, he stressed the king's duty to rule in accordance with the approved laws and customs established with the consent of the people. Although he did not criticize Alfonso X by name, he was aware of popular complaints of excessive taxation and innovations in the law. While providing Infante Sancho with a manual for good government, he also conveyed a tacit critique El Rey Sabio.

Abstract: This essay brings to light a previously untranslated Latin medieval rhetorical treatise from Castile and Leóón——Juan Gil de Zamora's letter writing manual Dictaminis Epithalamium, or The Marriage Song of Letter-Writing (c. 1277). Juan Gil (c. 1240––c. 1318) was among the first writers in Castile and Leóón to compose a rhetorical treatise on the technical elements of composition. I outline the theoretical and technical elements of Juan Gil's ars dictaminis. Following an explication of his theory, I historicize the Dictaminis Epithalamium within the western European rhetorical tradition and within the established dictaminal genre. I argue that Juan Gil develops a new rhetoric for letter writing——one incorporating innovations as well as compilations of ideas from the Italian and French schools of letter-writing.

Ferrero, Hernández Cándida. "LIber contra venena et animalia venenosa. Estudio preliminar, edición crítica y traducción." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/5536.

Full text
Abstract:
The work above mentioned, written by the Franciscan Juan Gil Zamora, is a small encyclopaedia, alphabetically organised, whose aim is to put forward remedies against poisons of mineral, vegetable and animal origin. Within the animal field he devotes special attention to the difference existing between those extraordinary animals extraordinarily harmful and those that, even though small in size, are annoying for man's life, such as fleas, bugs and mosquitoes.
This piece of work was first done filtering the manuscripts 1404 of the Dukes of Urbino's collection, from the Apostolic Vatican Library in Rome (XIV c.) and MF 139 of the Bartolome March foundation Library, in Majorca (XV c.). Starting from these manuscripts and taking into account the first edition of the work done by Manuel de Castro ("The treatise Contra Venena by Fr. Juan Gil de Zamora, Franciscan" AIA, Second époque nr. 141, 1976, 117 pp), we did the first edition that takes into account both manuscripts, as well as reading corrections to the first edition.
We have also effected the translation of the work , the first one effected adding a set of notes that include text of authors dealing in similar topics, older or contemporary to the author. In the notes we offer ample comment on the names of the plants, as well as some clearing terms of a medical character.
As a prologue we have effected a study of the work within the context of the time and the literary production of the author, who was a very interesting character of the entourage of Alfonso X and Sancho IV. In this preliminary study we do a research into the sources that he uses that proves the relation of this work with Vincent de Beauvais' Speculum Naturale and Avicena's Liber Canonis.

As a complement to our work we add some indexes relative to the Latin text, that have been organised under four epigraphs: plants and their derivatives, animals and derived substances, minerals and names of people, place and work.

CAPES

Abstract:
The subject of aprince dressing as a gardener to approach his beloved is dear to the European theatrical tradition: the model of Don Duardos by Gil Vicente (1562), reprinted in El rincipe viñador by Luis Vélez de Guevara (1668), is also used in French theatre, which proposes a variation in Le Prince déguisé by Georges de Scudery (1636), partly based on the novel Grisel y Mirabella by Juan de Flores (1524). This subject was later integrated into 17th century Italian theatre, starting with Venetian opera. This essay analyses in particular some works produced in Venice in the middle of the century, starting with Il prencipe giardiniero by Benedetto Ferrari (1644), whose subject anticipates first L’Oristeo (1651) by Giovanni Faustini and Francesco Cavalli, and Laurindo by Gio. Andrea Moniglia, written in 1657 and printed as Il principe giardiniere under the name of Giacinto Andrea Cicognini starting from 1664.
