Abstract:
The headline in the 15 August 1937 issue of the Great Falls Tribune proclaimed, “Montana Families Have Their Own Colony in Poland.” This colony of eight American families constituted the upper management of the Giesche Mining Company of Katowice, Silesia. Owned by Americans since 1926, the Giesche Company was Poland's largest zinc mining company and one of Poland's largest coal producers. The newspaper article described the beautiful wooded site where the Americans lived, the nearby golf course, the good winter skiing, the numerous Hollywood films available at the local movie house, and the Americans' Polish language lessons.

Abstract:
A recenzió Michael Giesecke „Von den Mythen der Buchkultur zu den Visionen der Informationsgesellschaft” című monográfiáját mutatja be, bepillantást kínálva az Erfurti Egyetem egyik kommunikációtudományi tanszékének munkájába is.

Abstract:
Field work by AKP during 1984 on south-east Disko included a brief re-investigation of an unusual assemblage of clasts found in the Upper Cretaceous sandstones of the Atane Formation. These clasts were first found by Giesecke in 1807 (Giesecke, 1910) and subsequently briefly characterised by Schiener (1974, p. 25) as "a characteristic marker assemblage of ex- otic components (acid subaerial volcanics, red and black cherts, pisolites and chertified limestones)". Schiener (1977) tentatively correlated the clasts with Early Cretaceous rhyolitic tuffs from Ivnakavsak on northern Nugssuaq. Below, we briefly describe gastropods found in the clasts, as well as the clast lithologies. Several types of the chert clasts have begun to attract local interest as potential semi-precious stones.

Abstract:
William Higgins is primarily remembered for his claims to have developed the principles of the atomic theory before John Dalton. Why did Higgins, who did not issue a single word in print on the atomic theory for 25 years after his 1789 book A Comparative View , suddenly claim priority in 1814, and then continue to pursue his assertions against Dalton and his supporters with such vitriol? This paper argues that Higgins's delay in sending a sample of the Mooresfort meteorite to the naturalist and illustrator James Sowerby contributed to the Dublin Society's decision to split Higgins's dual professorship of chemistry and mineralogy, which led to the hiring of mineralogist Charles Giesecke. Higgins's subsequent frustrations, including an ongoing competition with Giesecke, indicate that his claims to the atomic theory were attempts to rebuild his diminished status.

Abstract:
Tin-free Giese reactions, employing primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl iodides as radical precursors, ethyl acrylate as a radical trap, and sodium cyanoborohydride as a radical mediator, were examined in a continuous flow system. With the use of an automated flow microreactor, flow reaction conditions for the Giese reaction were quickly optimized, and it was found that a reaction temperature of 70 °C in combination with a residence time of 10–15 minutes gave good yields of the desired addition products.

Abstract:

We analyze the design and impact of bank regulation using a dynamic structural framework. The optimal regulatory policy combines a target capital requirement, the mitigation of underinvestment, an intervention capital requirement to control inefficient risk taking, and recapitalization of distressed banks. The optimal target and intervention capital requirements from our structural estimation are consistent with the substantially higher capital requirements proposed in Basel III and together achieve most of the regulatory benefits by alleviating underinvestment and asset substitution. They are interdependent and respond differently to banks’ asset characteristics, thereby suggesting that regulatory policies should be carefully tuned to the economic environment. In ruminants duodenal purines, mainly derived from microbial nucleic acids, are catabolised and excreted in the urine as xanthine, hypoxanthine, uric acid and allantoin. The use of purine derivatives as an index of net microbial syntesis in the rumen requires a better understanding of the contribution of endogenus losses to total urinary excretion.Similar levels of basal excretion of purine derivatives has been determined in ruminants maintained by intragastric nutrition (Giesecke et al. 1984, Fujihara et al. 1987) and preruminants fed on liquid diets (Linberg, 1989). However, lower excretion of allantoin and uric acid were recorded when exogenous supply was reduced by fasting (Rys et al. 1975).

Full text
Abstract:
Sir Charles Giesecke (1761-1833) was a mineral collector and dealer before becoming Professor of Mineralogy at the Royal Dublin Society in 1813. After his appointment he continued to deal in minerals and he supplied collections to museums in Europe, to Trinity College, Dublin and -- it seems -- to his students. One such student collection was recently discovered in the Ulster Museum, where it had been stored unrecorded for nearly a century. It was recognised by linking numbered specimen labels to an original lecture syllabus in the museum's archives. The history of the collection was established from a succession of signatures. The uncovering of this early 19th century collection resulted from careful observation during practical hands-on curation.

Abstract:
Institutional Repository (IR) is seen as a new way for an institution to contribute to the broader world of scholarship. The system is also seen as a collaboration between libraries, technologists, administrators, and faculty to enhance access to the scholarship of the institution. Preserving the institution's intellectual property and increasing the institution's visibility and prestige are some of the reasons for establishing an institutional repository (Macha and De Jager, 2011). Giesecke (2011) is of the view that institutional repositories require carefully thought plans, mutual consultation among all stakeholders and “with intellectual leadership from the faculty and the library working in partnership” there will be successful preservation and continued fostering of the growth of the human knowledge.

Abstract:
Asset prices can be stale. We define price staleness as a lack of price adjustments yielding zero returns (i.e., zeros). The term idleness (respectively, near idleness) is, instead, used to define staleness when trading activity is absent (respectively, close to absent). Using statistical and pricing metrics, we show that zeros are a genuine economic phenomenon linked to the dynamics of trading volume and, therefore, liquidity. Zeros are, in general, not the result of institutional features, like price discreteness. In essence, spells of idleness or near idleness are stylized facts suggestive of a key, omitted market friction in the modeling of asset prices. We illustrate how accounting for this friction may generate sizable risk compensations in short-dated option returns. This paper was accepted by Kay Giesecke, finance.
