Abstract:

Classically trained vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and 2017 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Rhiannon Giddens has in recent years enjoyed increased visibility in the contemporary country music world. In 2016, she was a featured singer on Eric Church's top-ten country hit, “Kill a Word,” and she won the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass that same year. Giddens also had a recurring role as social worker Hanna Lee “Hallie” Jordan on the long-running musical drama Nashville in 2017 and 2018. While Giddens now enjoys a certain degree of acceptance in the country music world, she has not always felt included in the various largely white, contemporary American roots scenes. As such, she continues to speak out to audiences and the press about the erasure of African Americans from histories of string music, bluegrass, country, and other styles and forms of American roots music. Using Giddens's 2017 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) keynote, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops' music video for the song “Country Girl” from 2012's Leaving Eden, I demonstrate that Giddens effectively reclaims American old-time string music and country culture as black, subverting historically inaccurate racialized notions of country music authenticity.

Abstract:

The article analyzes migration processes in the European Union as an imperative of cosmopolitanism in the theory of the Second Modern by E. Giddens. It is established that when assessing migration processes in the context of the crisis of the policy of European multiculturalism, the scientist, as a representative of the theory of the Second Modern, proves that they coincided with deeper transformations in the system of political relations and political communication. A system of Giddens's arguments has been defined in favor of the thesis that migration in European societies of the Second Modern is not so much a local or regional issue as a result and a means of globalization. An important element in the theory of the Second Modern E. Giddens is the characterization of migration through the reference to the concept of “diaspora”, which exist today in the form of not only physical but also virtual communities, which are often characterized by a higher degree of self-awareness than before. E. Giddens argues that the European rethinking of the essence of migration processes occurs in the context of the crisis of the paradigm of multiculturalism. In the societies of the Second Modern, the political risks caused by the system of migration - globalization, arise when individual groups of society are treated as “isolated and another’s” or when they refer to themselves as such. Abstract:

While mainstream research has treated entrepreneurship as a highly individualised and agentic process, institutional researchers contend that entrepreneurship operates within a greater embedded setting. Various researchers have appealed to Giddens’ dual structure to explain an entrepreneur’s embedded-agency. According to Giddens’ dual structure, this embedded-agency consists of the rules or norms of a social group in which these rules constrain and enable an entrepreneur’s resources. Yet, despite Giddens’ contributions, Giddens is criticised for conflating the rules of this embedded setting with an entrepreneur’s resources in which neither affects the other in any significant way. By drawing on concepts of the Austrian entrepreneur and embeddedness, a theory of institutional entrepreneurship is developed to address this conflation problem. This institutional entrepreneurship offers an embedded-agency to explain how an entrepreneur can create, maintain and disrupt their embedded social settings. This embedded-agency addresses Giddens’ conflation problem and broadens the agent-centric focus of institutional entrepreneurship research.

Aponta, por fim, que: 1) há pouco diálogo entre a EF e o sociólogo inglês e 2) a maioria dos textos produzidos pela área não utiliza Giddens de maneira reflexiva, cometendo, assim, deslizes teóricos.

Giddens' udkast til en modernitetsteori tildeler endvidere medierne en nøglerolle. Både trykte og elektroniske medier har været centrale for den løsrivelse af social interaktion fra konkret tid og sted, der kendetegner højmoderni- teten. Når stadig flere livsområder underkastes institutionelle, abstrakte styringsmekanismer, hvilket indebærer uoverskuelighed og nye risici, får medierne en stadig vigtigere rolle som tilvejebringere af tillid. I denne artikel præsenterer Henrik Kaare Nielsen vigtige elementer i Giddens´ sociologi og diskuterer dens relevans for medieforskningen.

Nomine Del-Shamarran membahas kritik Anthony Giddens terhadap teori perubahan sosial dan usahanya untuk menjelaskan perubahan sosial melalui teori strukturasi. Teori perubahan sosial adalah teori yang berusaha menjelaskan perubahan dalam masyarakat berdasarkan kriteria mekanisme tunggal, misal - Marx (Kekuatan Produksi), Durkheim (Pembagian Tenaga Kerja), dan Freud-Marcuse (Represi Seksual). Giddens mengkritik teori-teori ini karena mereka terlalu deterministik dan teori-teori ini gagal untuk mengenali agensi manusia dalam masyarakat. Giddens secara khusus memberikan perhatian pada evolusionisme dalam kritiknya. Ia mendefinisikan evolusionisme sebagai teori perubahan sosial yang terkait dengan kemajuan yang tidak dapat diubah dalam masyarakat ke tingkat yang lebih tinggi berdasarkan kriteria tertentu yang berkaitan dengan teori evolusi dalam biologi. Sejarah manusia bagi Giddens bukanlah kisah evolusi seperti Darwin. Ia menganggapnya lebih episodik, terkait dengan konsep kebangkitan dan kejatuhan peradaban Toynbee.

Abstract:

A number of social theorists have attempted to elaborate poststructuralist analytics that capture the dialectics of social structure and human agency. Giddens proposes a ‘general theory’, centered on the notion of ‘structuration’. He is particularly important to geography because he suggests that the spatiality of social practices belongs at the center of social theory and historical analysis. Systems of social practices are defined by their time–space characteristics. There are problems in the corpus of Giddens's work that require attention, however, before such a theory can be fully viable. These include: Giddens's derogation of intentional action in favor of practical knowledge; his notion that structure is ‘instantiated’; his concept of power; his treatment of material resources; and his lack of attention to discursive strategies. From an examination of these areas of Giddens's work, it can be seen that he advances several, inconsistent, theories of social change. In a reinvigorated theoretical human geography, based on the analysis of interaction in time and space, these problem areas must be tackled.

The Labour government has often argued that it is attempting to find a ‘third way’ in politics, appearing to take its inspiration from Anthony Giddens and, in relation to Labour's pensions policy, Giddens' notion of ‘positive welfare’.Noting that the government maintains that ‘pensions are all about security’, and that it has declared the importance of this position throughout its reform of UK pension provision, this article critically examines the nature of the ‘security’ its reform is likely to deliver. Using the work of Giddens, it notes the importance of the concept of ontological security, and the relevance of trust to security. From this basis, and drawing upon the work of both Giddens and Niklas Luhmann, it goes on to consider whether the government's reforms of the three pillars of pension provision in the UK – state provision, occupational provision and personal provision – are capable of delivering greater security in pension provision.It concludes that, quite apart from the potential criticisms of the conception of positive welfare itself, the government's apparent adoption of such an approach has failed to appreciate adequately the importance of ontological security to any understanding of welfare. As a consequence, it is suggested that the practical outcome is reform that is likely to create much less security in pension provision than either Giddens' approach, or indeed regular government pronouncements, might suggest.

Abstract:

Structuration Theory developed by Anthony Giddens, a British sociologist, in response to claims by post-structuralism, holds that the structures that humans find themselves in are determined for them, and volunteerism, that suggests that humans are completely free to create their lived environment. Structuration theory has a several unique nomenclature to explain the relationships that the human “agency” has with institutions or “structure”. This paper explains the use of the words and relates them to relevant examples. The understanding that Structuration Theory gives us can be very useful for understanding geographic phenomenon such as the idea of the time-space continuum. Urban arenas have a very complex set of relationships between humans and their environments; housing, movement within the environment, etcetera. The paper is also focused on understanding the connections between Giddens’ theory and the field of geography. No presente texto tomamos a obra de Anthony Giddens para avaliar a forma pela qual a questão ecológica veio a ser incorporada pela teoria social. Giddens se tornou nas últimas décadas num dos grandes nomes das ciências sociais contemporâneas e, no decorrer dos últimos anos, passou a ter uma intervenção importante no cenário político com sua proposta de construção de uma Terceira Via. Ao mesmo tempo, ao longo desse período, muitos trabalhos das ciências sociais passaram a expressar também um interesse cada vez maior pelo tema ambiental. Um fenômeno que pode ser visto até mesmo nos próprios trabalhos de Giddens onde iremos encontrar uma referência permanente aos temas do risco, perigo, segurança e de conceitos como desenvolvimento sustentável, modernização ecológica e sociedade de risco. Em razão desse quadro geral, parece pertinente avaliarmos o que um teórico social como Giddens tem a nos dizer sobre a crise ecológica contemporânea. No texto procuramos mostrar como esse tema se entrelaça com três fases distintas do pensamento do autor. Ao final, avaliamos brevemente algumas críticas que são endereçadas ao seu trabalho.

AbstractThis symposium addresses the role of anxiety, fear, and ontological (in)security in world politics. Proceeding from the recognition of the scholarly interest and multitude of approaches that characterize the field of ontological (in)security studies, the Symposium homes in on the relationship between anxiety and fear, and between anxiety, subjectivity, and agency. The Introduction critically engages with Anthony Giddens' understandings of ontological (in)security, in an effort to spur the revisiting, questioning, and, in some cases, leaving behind Giddens' assumptions in order to develop a more dynamic conception. In response, the first three contributions draw on resources in existentialist philosophy, especially Heidegger, Tillich, and Kierkegaard, to further unpack the relationship between anxiety and ontological (in)security. They do so by returning to the experiential moment of confronting existential anxiety, a moment that Giddens quickly closes down, to better grasp how existential anxiety resolves into an orientation to action. The final two essays, in comparison, bring anxiety ‘back in’ to locales where Giddens' theory occludes it: the unconscious and the international, thus arguing that emotional configurations other than fear are always possible.

A controversial question among contemporary scholars is whether advanced industrial societies are still in modernity, or whether they are on the threshold of, or even have entered, a new postmodern order (see, for example, Bell, 1973; Lyotard, 1986, p. 14; Lash and Urry, 1987). In The Consequences of Modernity Anthony Giddens writes: ‘Beyond modernity, we can perceive a new and different order, which is “post-modern”, but this is quite distinct from what is at the moment called by many “post-modernity”’ (Giddens, 1990, p. 3). However, he does recognize that there is something perceptibly different about the present, which he characterizes as ‘late modernity’ (or ‘high modernity'), an era in which the consequences of modernity are more radicalized and globalized than before (Giddens, 1990, pp. 3, 51).

Abstract:

McDonalization in the world created a new concept of a new modernization style of Popular Culture. The representation built by McDonald's then changed the capitalization system of the fast-food industry to one that prioritizes time and cost efficiency and offers the prestige of higher consumer class values through a sign system and the formation of a structure in a new service culture at McDonald's. Through a literature review viewed from the perspective of Ritzer's social definition paradigm and Giddens's Modernity, it can be explained that McDonald's makes a mass culture system at the global level for fast food restaurants and a modern system of product services. Meanwhile, McDonald's seems to be simulating a sign and icon that attracts consumers' attention to focus on the goal of forming a higher consumption society with the aim of supporting a smooth capitalization system in the culture industry.Keywords: Modernity; Ritzer; Gidden; Modern Culture Abstract McDonalisasi di dunia menciptakan sebuah konsep baru tentang Budaya Populer baru ala modernisasi. Abstract:

Research on ontological security in world politics has mushroomed since the early 2000s but seems to have reached an impasse. Ontological security is a conceptual lens for understanding subjectivity that focuses on the management of anxiety in self-constitution. Building especially on Giddens, IR scholars have emphasized how this translates to a need for cognitive consistency and biographical continuity – a security of ‘being.’ A criticism has been its so-called ‘status quo bias,’ a perceived tilt toward theorizing investment in the existing social order. To some, an ontological security lens both offers social theoretic foundations for a realist worldview and lacks resources to conceptualize alternatives. We disagree. Through this symposium, we address that critique and suggest pathways forward by focusing on the thematic of anxiety. Distinguishing between anxiety and fear, we note that anxiety manifests in different emotions and leaves room for a range of political possibilities. Early ontological security scholarship relied heavily on readings of Giddens, which potentially accounts for its bias. This symposium re-opens the question of the relationship between anxiety and subjectivity from the perspective of ontological security, thinking with and beyond Giddens. Three contributions re-think anxiety in ontological security drawing on existentialist philosophy; two address limitations of Giddens' approach.

Abstract:

Um exercício hermenêutico da gestão democrática de uma cooperativa. Uma esquizoanálise desse princípio de sua identidade. Esta análise específica é realizada com a correlação entre a segurança ontológica, por Anthony Giddens e o ressentimento, como narrado por Fiódor Dostoiévski. A correlação se referencia no realismo com que ambos, Giddens e Dostoiévski, qualificam as respectivas obras e explora a diferença que há entre as abordagens. O realismo de Giddens pressupõe uma dialética, inexistente no de Dostoiévski. A obra de Dostoiévski então sugere nuances sobre o significado ético atribuído à transparência que costuma se apresentar como um critério para a performance da gestão democrática das cooperativas. Abstract:

Since 1960s, with the rise of phenomenology and hermeneutics, structural sociology has been impacted to some extent. In Giddens’ opinion, the structural sociology represented by Parsons greatly belittles the influence of individual's subjective initiative and cognitive ability on the society, and overemphasizes the dominant role of the society on the individual. However, interpretive sociology regards the material world such as society as the object world which is opposite to human existence and suspends the restriction of structure on individuals. According to Giddens, the problem of social theory is actually the problem of social order, that is, to explain how people transcend time and space and transcend the limitation of individual presence by means of social relations. Based on Giddens' social construction theory, this paper tries to explain the influence of communication behavior in school education on individual socialization of students.
