Esta obra aponta questões de ordem metodológica e epistemológica na teoria da estruturação de Anthony Giddens, problemas reconhecidos e debatidos por vários de seus comentadores. Seguindo pistas encontradas nos próprios textos de Giddens, ela analisa com maior detalhe alguns livros de Mary Hesse e Roy Bhaskar, em busca de elementos que ajudem numa reconstrução metodológica da teoria de Giddens. Finalmente, ela argumenta em favor de uma maior atenção ao modelo de redes de Hesse, como uma ferramenta muito mais fértil para a análise de Giddens do que o realismo crítico de Bhaskar, para tentarmos resolver os dilemas que Giddens enfrenta. Como anexo, temos traduções de vários textos dos comentaristas mais importantes de Giddens, e também dois artigos do próprio, inéditos em português.
This work raises methodological and epistemological questions regarding Anthony Giddens theory of structuration, issues that have been acknowledged and debated by several of his critics. Following clues found in Giddens own texts, it analyses more deeply some works by Mary Hesse and Roy Bhaskar, searching for elements that would help with a methodological reconstruction of Giddens theory. Finally, it argues for greater attention towards Hesses network model, as a much more fruitful tool for analyzing Giddens than Bhaskars critical realism, in order to attempt to solve the dilemmas that Giddens faces. Also included are translations of several articles written by Giddens most important critics, and two papers by Giddens himself, previously unavailable in Portuguese.

O trabalho desenvolve uma exegese dos quadros teórico-metodológicos de análise da vida social avançados por Pierre Bourdieu e Anthony Giddens, concentrando-se nas formas pelas quais cada um destes autores ataca o problema fundacional da relação entre os planos da agência e da estrutura, tomados como as duas dimensões essencialmente constitutivas de qualquer retrato ou investigação do universo societário. O exame de tal problemática justifica-se pelo fato de que a teoria da prática de Bourdieu e a teoria da estruturação de Giddens têm como alicerce comum a tentativa de superação de um espectro de dicotomias inter-relacionadas que atravessam a história do pensamento científico-social no século XX, tendo sido expressas por uma variedade de rótulos binomiais, tais como subjetivismo/objetivismo, individualismo/holismo e micro/macro. A investigação das inovações conceituais e teses sócio-ontológicas desenhadas nas teorias dos autores supracitados é situada contra o pano de fundo de uma apresentação de tais antinomias, as quais indicam a tendência, corporificada em uma impressionante diversidade de perspectivas teórico-metodológicas, à formulação de concepções do relacionamento entre a ação individual subjetivamente propelida, de um lado, e as propriedades estruturais ou institucionais de formações coletivas, de outro, nas quais uma primazia ontológica e/ou explanatória é aprioristicamente imputada a uma destas esferas. Nesse sentido, o foco da exposição das armaduras teórico-analíticas de Giddens e Bourdieu se dirige ao elenco dos argumentos pelos quais ambos buscam demonstrar os limites de soluções teóricas unilaterais ao problema da articulação entre as instâncias da agência e da estrutura, ao mesmo tempo em que tecem instrumentos heurísticos orientados precisamente no sentido da captura da relação de condicionalidade recíproca estabelecida entre as mesmas no desenrolar da existência sócio-humana. Este percurso exegético desemboca, por fim, na conclusão de que a teoria da prática e a teoria da estruturação consistem em versões distintas de um modelo praxiológico-estruturacionista de investigação do mundo social, um enfoque que tem como pedra de toque a tese (trivial apenas à primeira vista) de que a caracterização da vida societária como fluxo ininterrupto de práticas configura-se como o ponto de partida heuristicamente mais frutífero para a construção de um retrato acurado dos processos simultâneos de constituição da sociedade pelos agentes e de constituição dos agentes pela sociedade. ____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The work develops an exegesis of the theoretical-methodological frameworks of social analysis formulated by Pierre Bourdieu and Anthony Giddens, focusing on the ways through which each of these authors tackles the foundational problem of the relation between the spheres of agency and structure, taken as the two essentially constitutive dimensions of any portrait or investigation of the societal universe. The exam of this problematic is justified by the fact that Bourdieu’s theory of practice and Giddens’s theory of structuration have as their common foundation the attempt to overcome a specter of inter-related dichotomies that stalk through the history of XXth century social-scientific thought, being referred to through a variety of binomial labels, such as subjectivism/objectivism, individualism/holism and micro/macro. The investigation of the conceptual innovations and social-ontological theses drawn in the theories of the above quoted athors is situated against the backdrop of a presentation of such antinomies, which indicate the tendency, embodied in an impressive diversity of theoretical-methodological perspectives, towards the formulation of conceptions of the relationship between subjectively propelled individual action, on the one hand, and structural or institutional properties of collective formations, on the other, in which an ontological and/or explanatory primacy is aprioristically imputed to one of these spheres. The focus of the exposition of the theoretical-analytical armors of Giddens and Bourdieu is directed towards the reunion of the arguments through which both try to demonstrate the limits of unilateral theoretical solutions to the problem of the articulation between the instances of agency and structure, while weaving, at the same time, heuristic instruments oriented precisely towards the capture of the relation of reciprocal conditionality established between those instances in the course of human social existence. This exegetical path leads, at last, to the conclusion that the theory of practice and the theory of structuration consist in two distinct versions of a praxeological-structurationist model of investigation of the social world, an approach that has as its cornerstone the thesis (a trivial one only at first sight) that states that the characterization of societal life as an endless flow of practices constitutes the heuristically most fruitful starting point to the construction of an accurate portrait of the simultaneous processes of constitution of society by agents and of constitution of agents by society.

Syftet med arbetet är att förstå varför människor i dagens samhälle väljer att gifta sig. Vad är skälen för giftermål när man i dagens Sverige kan bo i ett samboförhållande utan att vara gift. Är kärleken viktigast eller finns det andra aspekter som påverkar människor när de väljer att ingå ett äktenskap? Huvudtanken med arbetet är att förstå människor som ingår äktenskap och varför de gör det, samtidigt vill vi förstå de som bor i ett samboförhållande och varför de inte gifter sig. För att förstå detta har vi valt att utgå från kvalitativ metod. Kvalitativ metod utfördes genom intervjuer på fem kvinnor och onlineforskning gick ut på att starta ett forum på en bröllopssajt på Internet.

Vi har utgått från sociologiska teorier som vi anser är relevanta för vårt valda ämne där vi har använt oss av Giddens syn på äktenskap samt utgått från boken I det sociala landskapet

Vår frågeställning lyder: Varför gifter man sig?

Vår undersökning visade att kärleken var den största anledningen till varför människor väljer att gifta sig. Man gifter sig för att skapa ett starkare band mellan varandra, samtidigt leder det vidare till önskan om att bilda en gemensam familj.

Resumo: Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo demonstrar a centralidade da práxis na teoria da estruturação de Anthony Giddens, bem como a fundamentação dessa concepção em princípios ontológicos flexíveis: a capacidade transformadora humana e a reflexividade. Desse modo, abordo o diagnóstico giddensiano da modernidade como uma nova configuração da práxis social em que os princípios ontológicos da práxis são remodelados. Abstract: This research aims to demonstrate the centrality of social praxis in the structuration theory of Anthony Giddens and the fundamentation of this conception in flexible ontological principles: the transformative human capacity and the reflexivity. Thus, I analyze the Giddens?s diagnosis of modernity as a new social configuration of social praxis in which the ontological principles of praxis are refurbished. The research is organized in five chapters: in the first one, I situate Anthony Giddens in social theory; in the second one, I describe and analyze the fundamental concepts of structuration theory; in the third one, I analyze the fundamental concepts of the giddensian praxis; the fourth chapter deals with the time-space and social change; the last chapter refers to modernity and the restructuration of social praxis

In the past decade the introduction of eLearning technologies has been associated with innovation in Higher Education (HE) as it brings significant change and has the potential to transform practice in many facets of university life. These learning technologies have been described as a 'disruptive‘ type of innovation as they can be a catalyst for transforming the strategic direction of HE and reach well beyond the traditional activities associated with classroom pedagogies. However, the levels of adoption of eLearning vary significantly between universities in the UK, ranging from simple online availability of course content to the extensive use of content management systems. Additionally, several studies report that a significant number of academic staff are making little use of these learning technologies and that the adoption of eLearning has failed to reach the predicted expectations. Previous approaches to the examination of the adoption and diffusion of eLearning have focused either on systemic change influenced by technology that transforms the entire organisation (macro-level studies) or on various parts of, or individuals within the institution that may benefit the most from adoption of the technology (micro-level studies). Recently, there has been recognition that these singular approaches have failed to fully appreciate the complexity of the adoption of eLearning within higher educational institutions. Furthermore, there is acknowledgement that the adoption of eLearning is influenced by both the potential adopter and the institutional properties. Thus, a number of commentators have proposed that future studies need to combine macro- and micro-level perspectives that regress from singular approaches and deploy more integrative perspectives that emphasise the interactions and interconnections between individual actions and institutional structure. This thesis is situated in the field of HE and innovation management and examines the adoption and diffusion of learning technologies through a series of case studies. Drawing on Giddens‘ 'Theory of Structuration‘ and the work of Rogers in the adoption and diffusion of innovations, these exploratory case studies examine the interaction between human agency and structure. The implications of this study for university executives, managers, and academic teaching staff are far reaching, and, to some degree, contradict accepted management practice and existing literature.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse pupils’ and teachers’ views on pupils’ responsibility for their schoolwork and how this relates to a more comprehensive ideology of school and today’s high modern society. The analysis is inspired by Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory and the concepts of discursive consciousness, practical consciousness, rules, routines and resources.

At school level pupils’ and teachers’ views of pupils’ responsibility is shown in their practical and discursive consciousness. To capture this consciousness, observations were made during fifteen lessons in school year 9 (15-16 years of age). These lessons - “study times” - were introduced to increase freedom of choice, flexibility and responsibility. Sixty-eight pupils and twenty-two teachers were interviewed. The ideology expressed in pupils’ and teachers’ views on pupils’ responsibility was related to the official school ideology expressed in the national curriculum. Finally, an analysis was carried out inspired by Anthony Giddens’ and Ulrich Beck´s concepts used in their descriptions of the high modern society, individualism and value-relativism.

The results showed a discursive consensus between teachers and pupils concerning their views pupils’ responsibility for their schoolwork. The meaning of responsibility was taken for granted and implied doing the school tasks and to complete them in time. Both teachers and pupils expressed that many pupils’ have difficulties in taking this responsibility. A discrepancy between the pupils’ discursive and practical consciousness was found.

Rules and routines were created by the teachers to control the freedom of space offered during the “study times”. The pupils legitimated the teachers’ controlling function but in practice they offer resistance against the demand for responsibility.

The overall analysis identified three issues that are important for further discussions in research and educational practice. Responsibility and learning: Responsibility was observed as a part of a “culture of doing” separated from learning as such. Also, responsibility was linked to individual work. The freedom offered during the “study times” was used by both pupils, and teachers, to build relationships. This means that relationships were not created through work but rather despite it. Responsibility and the view of the pupils’: In pupils’ and teachers’ view of responsibility pupils were easy going, ruled by lust and/or responsible but not always according to the conditions stipulated by the school. The pupils were offered a freedom to choose but they were also held responsible for the consequences. While they could make the choice not to work, this would influence the evaluation of the achievements, and in reality make it a “non-choice”. The freedom was limited and conditioned. Responsibility as a democratic principle: The connection between responsibility and pupil participation expressed in the national curriculum was not to be found in pupils’ and teachers’ views of responsibility. While the pupils were offered participation in relation to which assignments to choose to work with during the “study times”. They were not invited to shape the rules and the routines for the schoolwork or to have influence on the contents of the work or the working environment. The pupils’ did not ask for more participation, but rather feared it would lead to chaos. The separation between participation and responsibility indicated in the study is suggested to weaken the idea of responsibility as one of the democratic principles.

In conclusion: The view of pupils’ responsibility for their schoolwork was built upon an individualistic ideology. known from Giddens and Becks description of high modernity. In contrast to their description, however my results show no signs of value-relativism

Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka betydelsen av sociala medier i relation till individers uppfattning om sig själva, med inriktning på hur individens självidentitet påverkades. Det sociala nätverket Facebook och bilddelningstjänsten Instagram stod i fokus för undersökningen. Studien genomfördes med hjälp av sex stycken halvstrukturerade intervjuer med tre kvinnor och tre män i åldrarna 20-32 år. Urvalet bestod av ett bekvämlighetsurval av personliga kontakter. Samtliga individer som ingick i studien var medlemmar på Facebook och Instagram sedan minst 1 år tillbaka och var dagligen aktiva på båda nätverken. Studiens resultat visade att Facebook och Instagram till största del gav individerna möjligheter att lyckas upprätthålla en stabil självidentitet. Samtliga individer ville framstå så bra som möjligt på de sociala nätverken och detta gick i linje med Anthony Giddens teori om det ideala självet. Resultatet visade tydligt att det ligger ett reflexivt moment bakom individernas presentationer av sig själva, med målet att visa upp en så bra sida som möjligt av sig själv. Respons från andra medlemmar och en önskan om att ha många vänner och följare på nätverken visade sig ha funktionen som ett främjande för individens stolthet. Resultatet visade även att negativa inverkningar på individernas självidentitet kunde uppkomma då de jämförde sig med andra medlemmars framställningar av sig själva.Vid sådana jämförelser uppstod känslor av att vara otillräcklig i någon bemärkelse och individernas stolthet visade sig i dessa fall vara hotad. I särskilda fall var stoltheten till och med ersatt av skamkänslor hos individen.

Reports from IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) call attention to the possibility of water shortages, to the collapse of the Amazon system, to the biodiversity crisis, and to the proliferation of extreme weather events. Anthony Giddens, British sociologist formulator of the theory of structuration, elaborates an analytical category appointing precisely the lack of concrete actions related to this environmental issue in the policy and in the daily practices. According to him, when practical measures for protecting the environment are put into practice, there will not be enough time to reverse the environmental collapse, setting the self-styled Giddens‟s Paradox. Such point of view of environmental question transforms in normative, abstract and universal, leaving to conceive it as eminently contextual - result of the interaction between individuals, groups and institutions. Precisely so it this research takes this analytical category as a starting point for a relational approach of environmental issues through his own theory of structuration. So, the environment and the nature are now considered as structural principles: as rules and resources mobilized in the reproduction and transformation of social life and, therefore, as objects of appointment disputes and discursive resignifications. In order to analyze sociologically the relational aspect the environmental issue through a qualitative research - theoretically and methodologically linked to the theory of structuration the county of Brotas (São Paulo/Brazil) was established as case study. Are used as research methods: semi-structured interviews, snowball technique, documental survey, photo documentation and socioeconomic questionnaire. This particular location shows a convergence between the multiple conceptions of the environmental issue, the professionalization of ecotourism and of the discursive resignification of the rural areas, allowing the visualization of multiple cognitive perceptions of the environmental issue. The critical debate from Giddens enabled the analysis of four social processes of resignification in the Brotas county: a) The Jacaré-Pepira River; b) From the "hole" to the tourist attraction; c) From Radical to Disneyland; and d) The Estrada do Patrimônio . In summary, the trajectory of the dissertation seeks to discuss sociologically that the environmental issue does not arise in everyday life in a universal and normative form, but eminently as cognitive perception linked to the complexity of knowingness agents.
Relatórios do IPCC (Painel Intergovernamental sobre as Mudanças Climáticas) alertam para a possibilidade de escassez de recursos hídricos, de colapso do sistema amazônico, de crise da biodiversidade, e de proliferação de eventos climáticos extremos. Anthony Giddens, sociólogo britânico formulador da teoria da estruturação, elabora uma categoria analítica que nomeia justamente a ausência de ações concretas em relação a essa questão ambiental nas práticas políticas e cotidianas. Segundo ele, quando medidas práticas de proteção ao meio ambiente forem postas em práticas, não haverá mais tempo suficiente de reverter o quadro de colapso ambiental, configurando o autodenominado Paradoxo de Giddens. Tal perspectiva da questão ambiental acaba por torná-la normativa, abstrata e universal, deixando de concebê-la como eminentemente contextual - fruto da interação entre indivíduos, grupos e instituições. Justamente por isso a pesquisa toma essa categoria analítica como ponto de partida para uma abordagem relacional da questão ambiental através da própria teoria da estruturação. Assim, meio ambiente e natureza passam a ser considerados como princípios estruturais: como regras e recursos mobilizados na reprodução e transformação da vida social e, portanto, como objetos de disputas de nomeação e de ressignificação discursiva. Para analisar sociologicamente o aspecto relacional da questão ambiental através de uma pesquisa qualitativa - teórica e metodologicamente vinculada à teoria da estruturação - estabeleceu-se o município de Brotas-SP como estudo de caso. São utilizados como métodos de pesquisa: entrevistas semiestruturadas, técnica de bola de neve, levantamento documental, fotodocumentação e questionário socioeconômico. Tal localidade específica apresenta uma convergência entre as múltiplas concepções da questão ambiental, a profissionalização do ecoturismo e a ressignificação discursiva do próprio espaço rural, possibilitando a observação de múltiplas percepções cognitivas da questão ambiental. O debate crítico a partir de Giddens permitiu a análise de quatro processos sociais de ressignificação no município de Brotas: a) O Rio Jacaré-Pepira; b) Do buraco ao atrativo turístico; c) Do Radical à Disneylândia e d) A Estrada do Patrimônio. This thesis stresses the centrality today of synthetical sociological theories, such as those of Habermas, Giddens and Alexander, but criticises them for neglecting the problem of collective subjectivity. The failure to consider this topic stems from deep problems in the history of sociology. Emerging from the social thinking of the Enlightenment and the Counter-Enlightenment, sociology has been keen on perceiving social life in the mould of a polarisation between active individuals and passive societies or, more generally, social systems or structures. Although the dialectics between subject and object plus the notion of interaction have allowed for bridges between those two poles, a crucial idea has not been receiving enough attention. Marx - with the concept of social class - and Parsons - with the concept of collective actor - produced two important departures from the presuppositional universe of the Enlightenment. But their elaboration does not suffice and, more regrettably however, those synthetical theories have not acknowledged and worked on the problems and concepts Marx and Parsons highlighted. The concept of collective subjectivity is, therefore, introduced to resume their insights and connect them to the issues and formulations put forward in synthetical theories. A critique of the philosophy of the subject, aiming at its decentring, is moreover pursued, for Marx and Parsons still embraced some of its main tenets. The concept of collective causality holds centre stage for the definition of collective subjectivity. Alongside collective causality, interaction, dialectics, levels of (de)centring, the syllogism of the general, the particular and the individual, plus multidimensionality, furnish the categorial axis for the development of the thesis. Concerned with general theoretical questions, this study makes, however, reference to "middle range" theories, in order to develop, ground its propositions and suggest ways in which its concepts may be useful in more empirically oriented research.

Den stora tillgängligheten till Internet har inneburit att allt fler människor börjat kommunicera och interagera online, både via sociala medier och onlinespel. Antalet nya plattformar där människor med samma intresse kan mötas och interagera ökar hela tiden. En av alla dessa plattformar är Twitch där individer kan välja att sända live när de spelar dator- och tv-spel medan andra kan välja att agera publik. Utifrån grundad teori undersöker vi hur personer upplever att streama via Twitch och vilka de mest centrala aspekterna av detta är i syfte att öka förståelsen kring detta relativt nya fenomen. Genom intervjuer, frågeformulär och observationer lyfter studien fram hur dessa personer upplever bland annat gemenskap, krav, frustration och näthat genom streamingen. Resultatet visar bland annat på att det är upplevelsen av gemenskap som är det mest centrala inom fenomenet och i de flesta fall det som gör att personerna väljer att ägna sig åt streaming. Utifrån Giddens teori om det senmoderna samhället kopplas fenomenet till ett nutida sammanhang och med Goffmans teorier om roller belyses samspelet mellan streamarna och deras tittare.

Fritidspersonal är en yrkesgrupp som balanserar mellan skolans målstyrda kunskapsinriktade pedagogiska uppdrag och fritidshemmet som traditionellt sett varit en socialpedagogisk omsorgsbetonad verksamhet. Genom sju djupintervjuer med personal verksamma inom fritidshem i Stockholmsområdet har vi undersökt hur de i sitt arbete förhåller sig till fritidshemmets relativt nya uppdrag. Sedan har materialet analyserats utifrån Anthony Giddens teori om strukturering, identiteter och positionering. Studien pekar på hur fritidspersonalens identitet ständigt omförhandlas i ett dagligt socialt samspel där även kläder har betydelse för vad som kommuniceras och hur läraridentiteter konstrueras.
The purpose of this study is to examine after school teachers attitude to their professional identity by investigating their thoughts and experiences of clothes in the school context. After school teachers are working in both the school area and the leisure time area which makes the profession difficult to define. This qualitative study has been conducted through interviews with seven after school teachers in Stockholm, and analyzed using Anthony Giddens theories of structuration, identities and positioning. The study points out that teacher identities are not set in stone but are being negotiated in the daily social life where clothes are being used as means of communication and a way of constructing teacher identities.

Enligt många bedömare upplever vi nu en typ av samhälleligt paradigmskifte. Den moderna världsordningen byggd på upplysningsfilosofin och industrialismens rationalitet ersätts med hjälp av tilltagande globaliseringsprocesser av vad somliga kallar ett postmodernt samhälle. Med utgångspunkt i ett socialkonstruktivistiskt forskningsperspektiv syftar denna studie till att undersöka hur tre gymnasielärare upplever sin yrkesidentitet i relation till dessa samhällsförändringar och hur detta kan förklaras. Undersökningen bygger på en kvalitativ metodologisk grund och är utförd med hjälp av kvalitativa intervjuer. Som analytiska verktyg används främst de begrepp Anthony Giddens utvecklat i sin analys av senmodernitetens effekter på individers självidentitet. Studien visar att lärarna inte upplever någon tydlig yrkesidentitet. Detta förklaras med att lärarna ger uttryck för en konflikt mellan vad de anser att en lärare skall göra och vad samhället genom läroplanen föreskriver. Orsaken till detta är att lärarna inte känner tillit till skolsystemets förmåga att anpassa sig till de nya förutsättningar som omger den. Denna förväntningskollision resulterar i att lärarna upplever sin yrkesroll som oskarp och utan klart definierade gränser.

Notre immersion dans cet environnement, à savoir le Terminal à conteneurs du Port de Beyrouth durant un an nous a permis de comprendre la véritable nature de ces problèmes ainsi que leurs sources.Notre présence sur le terrain nous a donné l'occasion de conduire une série d’entretiens avec les chefs de département afin de comprendre les lacunes et les obstacles auxquels ils font face et être en mesure de proposer des solutions adaptées à leurs problèmes par le biais de cette thèse.Nos entretiens avec les chefs de département ont eu pour but de recueillir pour chaque département une description du fonctionnement quotidien des opérations, les principaux problèmes et défis les plus récurrents auxquels ils font face afin de trouver les manières de les contrer.Cette thèse a pour but de dresser une liste de recommandations par département afin d’améliorer leur performance dans le futur et d’augmenter ainsi la performance globale du Terminal à conteneurs du Port de Beyrouth
The problematic covers the way ports in general and the container terminal of the port of Beirut in Lebanon, in particular, manage and optimize the flow of their daily operations.We also included the theory of structuration of Giddens which is a social theory and a theory of social relations, to see how some of its principles could be valuable to our study.The subject of the management of a container terminal and the flaws that reside in its management and that affect its performance is an issue that has not been discussed in depth before. Our deep dive in the container terminal of Beirut port for a year has allowed us to understand the true nature of its problems and their sources.Our presence on the ground gave us the opportunity to conduct a series of meetings with heads of departments in order to understand the gaps and obstacles they face and be able to suggest solutions to their problems through this thesis.Our interviews with heads of departments were aimed at gathering for each department a description of the daily running of operations, the most recurrent problems and challenges they face and come up with possible ways to counter them.This thesis aimed to develop a list of recommendations by department in order to improve each department’s performance in the future and thereby increase the overall performance of the Beirut container terminal

Syfte: Syftet med denna uppsats är att få reda på hur attityden och hur åsikterna kring nätdejting ser ut hos allmänheten. Med denna studie önskar jag att människor vågar prata mer öppet om nätdejting och i vilken omfattning det förekommer just i deras liv. Frågeställningar:- Hur ser vetskapen om nätdejtingens existens och utbreddhet ut? - Hur vanligt är medlemskap på en dejtingsajt? - Vad har man för attityd och inställning kring dem som nätdejtar? - Anses det vara ett bra dejtningalternativ nu och i framtiden?- Skiljer detta sig åt mellan kön, ålder och datoranvändande? Teoretiska perspektiv: Intimitetens omvandling, modernitetens följder och internet. Metod: Kvantitativ metod med enkäter. Empiri: 80 enkäter delades slumpmässigt ut och frågor kring respondenternas bakgrund, erfarenhet och attityder till nätdejting besvarades. Slutsatser: Hela 90 % hade hört talas om nätdejting men endast hälften hade själva ett medlemskap på en nätdejting sida.Attityden till nätdejting såg olika ut. Att det bara är konstiga och blyga människor som nätdejtar höll majoriteten inte med om. Skillnaden mellan gifta och sambos visade stor skillnad i påståendet om de som nätdejtar skulle vara konstiga. Gifta var övertygade om att de som nätdejtar är konstiga medan sambos var obestämda i frågan.På frågan om man kan lära känna någon på nätet höll 70 % med om. Det fanns de som instämde i att man kan hitta kärleken på nätet men var inte lika övertygade om att man kan lära känna någon på nätet.Som par anses det att man inte bör tala om att man träffats genom nätdejting i samma utsträckning som när man som singel letar efter sin partner på nätet. This thesis is about global catastrophic risks and the conscious effect of such risks at the level of everyday life. Utilising R. D. Laing's concept of "ontological security", this thesis questions the extent to which risks that loom in the global environment cause a sense of ontological insecurity amongst individuals at the local-level. In addressing this question, this thesis responds to the theories of Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens who maintain that the contemporary age is marked both by the emergence of global risks that exist as the unintended consequences of modernisation and a greater sense of risk owing to how information about such risks is disseminated by the media. While no objection is made to the argument that the global environment has become more objectively threatening, this thesis questions whether individuals in fact perceive such threat in their daily lives. This argument rests on the view that global risks, in the main, lack a tangible dimension needed to elicit a sense of urgency. Seeking to ground the risk literature from the level of theoretical abstraction to that of lived experience, this thesis presents a case study of how risk is perceived in the tourist-dependent township of Akaroa. Despite the fact that New Zealand is generally seen as "safe" and "secure" and removed from the vicissitudes of global events, its economic reliance on international tourism ensures a susceptibility to external forces that disrupt global tourism flows. Given the recent publicity as to how such risks as climate change and peak oil may undermine international tourism in New Zealand, it is clear that areas that are particularly reliant on the international visitor market, like Akaroa, are significantly exposed to global events. This not only makes Akaroa an ideal case study in which to establish the extent to which global risks undermine ontological security in daily life, it also helps measure how seriously individuals in tourist-dependent areas consider the possibility of a substantial tourist decline.

Abstract:
Majoriteten av de som lever med skyddade personuppgifter i Sverige är kvinnor som flyr från före detta partners. Studiens syfte är att undersöka hur kvinnor som lever med skyddade personuppgifter ser på sin vardag, sin identitet och sin tillit till individer i deras närmaste omgivning samt till samhället. Vi har besvarat syftet med hjälp av teoretiska utgångspunkter från Anthony Giddens och Erving Goffmans teoretiska perspektiv och begrepp som berör individen och individens sociala interaktioner i samhället. Vi har genom online-intervjuer intervjuat kvinnor som levt skyddat under varierande tidslängder, från sex månader till åtta år. Kvinnorna är i åldrarna 30 till 50 år och har olika bakgrunder till varför de lever skyddat men med den gemensamma nämnaren att de alla flyr från män som de tidigare haft en relation med. Denna studie har en fenomenologisk ansats där vi har utgått ifrån informanternas livsvärld för att få förståelse för hur informanterna upplever fenomenet som är att leva med skyddade personuppgifter. I vårt resultat av studien så har vi kommit fram till att den förändrade situationen resulterat i att kvinnornas liv satts på paus och deras personliga utveckling har till viss del stannat av, vilket deras vardag till stor del har påverkats negativt av. Deras utsatthet har resulterat i en bristande tillit till sin omgivning och även till myndigheter och samhället. Majoriteten av kvinnorna känner att samhället åsidosätter kvinnornas rättigheter och placerar dem på skyddade boenden för att de inte ska behöva ta ansvar för dem. De flesta känner en liten upprättelse över att de har fått skyddet och blivit betrodda av rättsväsendet, dock upplever kvinnorna att de inte har fått en fullständig upprättelse eftersom de tvingas leva begränsat medan gärningspersonen ofta går fri.

This case study investigates modernity and its emergence with mortality and health service measures as starting point during the period between 1895 and 1917 in Karlstad. The studies investigation material comes from source material from The Statistical Central Bureau, The Health Service Board in Karlstad, and from Karlstad Municipality ́s Technical Board. The material has through a quality, and quantity based work and production method made it possible to answer the case studies questions. To be able to understand the study ́s result from a modernity point of view, Anthony Gidden ́s modernity theory is being used. The studies results show that in Karlstad there has been a densifying development in several of the modernity ́s fields during the years that have been researched. This densifying development has lead to that the every day life of the population has in some extent changed. This period of time is also characterized as a time with an evolved sense of responsibility regarding the health service profession. During this time of modernization there was a decline of the public and the gender specific death rate in the city in the same time as tuberculosis developed into the most common cause of death for the rest of the population. However the change of this cause of death group looked somewhat different between the divided aged based groups that were examined. These results also give indications on certain individual health service measures positive affects on mortality in the city. Even here it seems that de development has been quite different between the different aged based groups that were examined. This case study ́s result both contradicts and strengthens earlier research in this area.
Denna fallstudie undersöker modernitetens framväxt, med dödlighet och hälsovårdsåtgärder som utgångspunkt i Karlstad under perioden 1895-1917. Studiens undersökningsmaterial utgörs av källmaterial från Statistiska Centralbyrån, Hälsovårdsnämnden i Karlstad samt från Karlstads kommuns tekniska nämnd. Materialet har genom både ett kvalitativt och kvantitativt arbets- och framställningssätt möjliggjort att besvara studiens frågeställningar. För att förstå studiens resultat utifrån ett modernitetsperspektiv nyttjas i studien Anthony Giddens modernitetsteori. Studiens resultat visar att det i Karlstad skedde en förtätning på flera av modernitetens områden under de år som undersökts. Denna förtätning bör ha bidragit till att det vardagliga livet för befolkningen i viss mån förändrades. Perioden kännetecknas även av en ökad medvetenhet och ansvarskänsla kring det hälsovårdande arbetet. Under denna tid av modernisering skedde en nedgång av det allmänna och könsspecifika dödstalet i staden, samtidigt som olika former av tuberkulos utvecklades till den vanligaste dödsorsaken för den totala befolkningen. Dock såg förändringen av denna dödsorsaksgrupp något olika ut mellan de skilda åldersindelade grupperna som undersökts. Resultatet visar även att finns indikationer på vissa enskilda hälsovårdsåtgärders positiva inverkan på dödligheten i staden. Även här verkar utvecklingen ha skilt sig något mellan de olika åldersindelade grupperna som undersökts. Denna studies resultat både problematiserar och bekräftar tidigare gjord forskning.

Abstract:
The aim of this Master's thesis is to study how generational identities are conveyed in the reception of two debut novels, Jack by Ulf Lundell and Allt by Martina Lowden. Both novels have been considered literary and social expressions of their generations. The empirical material consists of 14 reviews in Swedish daily press from the time of publication of Jack and Allt, respectively. The thesis revolves around the following questions: How is the generational identity defined in terms of lifestyle practices, milieus and other social circumstances? To what extent are structured factors such as gender and class considered? How are the critics considering the reflexive project of the self? I base the theoretical framework on Anthony Giddens' theories about identity creation in the late modern society. Idea analysis is used in the classification and analysis of the textual material. The model of analysis is based on factors that by Giddens are considered to affect the identity process. The result of the analysis shows that the generational identities expressed in the two novels appear very different. In the reviews discussing Jack, the identity is based on destructive lifestyle practices and is closely related to the political environment. In the reviews of Allt the identity is connected to a literary main theme that is constructed in relation to mediated influences. The conclusion suggests an increased understanding of the individual identity as a result of a reflexive process.

Mitt examensarbete handlar om hur arbetslösa ungdomar med försörjningsstöd kan se på sin situation, sin framtid och praktik som en språngbräda ut i arbetslivet. Uppmärksamhet läggs på de möjligheter och hinder som de ser på sin väg. Examensarbetet bygger på en kvalitativ studie där tre ungdomar intervjuats. Karolina Bozic, ungdomshandläggare vid Arbetsmarknadsenheten i Halmstad, har även hon intervjuats för att ge en bild av arbetet med de arbetslösa ungdomarna som har försörjningsstöd. Resultatet av mina intervjuer har analyserats utifrån de faktorer som enligt Giddens (2003) ger en förståelse för hur arbetslösheten kan påverka en människa. Vidare har jag kopplat resultatet till Bunar och Trondman (2001) som menar att föreställningen om framtiden bildas av de möjligheter man ser och de faktorer som formar ens liv. De talar även om det tragiska gapet, skillnaden mellan vad man vill och det faktiskt möjliga. Som en grund för analysen finns tidigare forskning uppdelad kring inträdet på arbetsmarknaden, att bli vuxen, kommuners arbete gällande arbetslösa ungdomar med försörjningsstöd samt synen på praktik. I mitt examensarbete kommer jag fram till att praktik har olika innebörd. Den kan stå för en merit, en chans att prova på ett yrke, någonting att göra och kontakter för framtiden. Praktiken kan även vara ett verktyg för personlig utveckling, något som kanske inte syns i arbetsmarknadseffekter men som har betydelse för individen. I mitt examensarbete framgår också att utbildning har stor betydelse. För de ungdomar jag intervjuat står utbildning, eller frånvaron av den, som den största möjligheten respektive hindret för att få ett jobb. Ingen av ungdomarna är särskilt motiverade för att studera vidare, men de kan se utbildning som den enda vägen ut ur sin arbetslöshet. Att vara arbetslös ungdom problematiserar inträdet i vuxenlivet. Lön skapar möjligheten att kunna försörja sig själv och planera sitt liv och sin framtid. Mitt examensarbete vittnar om ungdomar som står på tröskeln till vuxenlivet där jobb kan ge dem tillträde. Vuxenlivet med möjligheten att själv kunna bestämma över sitt eget liv är i många delar synonymt med arbetslivet. Att stödja ungdomarna i att hitta sin väg är ett betydelsefullt arbete för studie- och yrkesvägledare.

In der soziologischen Theoriebildung besteht ein weitgehender Konsens darüber, dass die theoriebildende Leitdifferenz von Handlung und Struktur nicht mehr dichotom konzeptualisiert werden kann, sondern analytisch überwunden werden muss. Die vorliegende Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Arbeiten von Anthony Giddens und prüft, inwiefern der hierin entwickelte Ansatz eines strukturierungstheoretischen Theoriemodells die bestehenden Defizite der soziologischen Theorie überwinden kann. Hierfür werden Kategorien für einen Theorievergleich entwickelt, auf Grundlage derer die Kernannahmen der Strukturierungstheorie in sozialtheoretischer, soziologischer und analytischer Hinsicht systematisch rekonstruiert werden. Angesichts der zentralen Thesen von Giddens, wonach das bislang dualistisch bestimmte Verhältnis von Handeln und Struktur in eine wechselseitige Dualität überführt werden müsse, die soziologische Ordnungsproblematik von ihrer Norm- und Wertzentriertheit auf eine Formzentriertheit, die die Kategorien von Raum und Zeit in die Analyse mit auf nimmt, umgestellt wird und sich damit auch die Bestimmung der Grunddimensionen der Moderne grundlegend ändern, lässt sich die Theorie der Strukturierung als eine Theorie mit Allgemeinheitsanspruch charakterisieren. Zwar finden sich in Giddens Arbeiten theoretisch weitreichende Vorschläge, die soziologischen Grundprobleme neu zu bestimmen, gleichzeitig zeigt sich aber auch, dass er es versäumt hat, die Relationen zwischen den einzelnen Problemebenen ausreichend zu reflektieren. Es wird aber auch deutlich, dass auf der Grundlage der bisher vorliegenden strukturierungstheoretischen Begriffe und Methoden ein analytisches Modell entwickelt werden kann, auf dessen Basis sich konkrete soziale Prozesse und Felder aufklären lassen. Strukturierung stellt somit kein neues Paradigma im Sinne einer Metatheorie dar, sondern umfasst eine Vielzahl von grundlegenden Einsichten und analytischen Möglichkeiten für ein soziologisches Forschungsprogramm, das es noch deutlicher auszuarbeiten gilt.
In the sociological theory formation, there is a far-reaching agreement that a theory forming difference between action and structure cannot be conceptualised bipartitely but has to be overcome analytically. This paper is concentrating on the works of Anthony Giddens and examines to what extent the developed approach of a theoretical concept may overcome the existing deficits of the sociological theory. For a theory comparison, categories have been developed which systematically reconstruct the central acceptances of the theory of structuration in theoretical, sociological, and analytical regard. In view of Giddens’s major theses, according to which the relationship of action and structure determined till now dualistically must be convicted into a mutual duality, the questions of sociological order must change from a concentration on standards and values to a category which includes in its analysis both scope and time and thus fundamentally change the basic dimensions of the modern age, the theory of structuration can be characterized as a theory of general validity. However, in Giddens’s work we find far-reaching theoretical suggestions for a determination of the sociological basic problems, however, it turns out that he failed to reflect the relation between the individual problem levels sufficiently. On the other side, it is evident that on the basis of the theoretical concepts and methods existing till now an analytical model can be developed which contributes to the solution of concrete social processes and fields. Therefore, the theory of structuration doesn’t represent a new paradigm in the sense of a metatheory but contains a variety of basic insights and analytical possibilities for a sociological research program which has to be worked out still more considerably.

A contemporaneidade aponta para uma nova concepção do risco. Passa-se de uma idéia de controle e racionalidade para uma idéia de incerteza e probabilidades. Essas transformações refletem no sistema do direito, que é obrigado a decidir e enfrentar os problemas da sociedade atual. A forma como as matrizes do direito têm lidado com o risco são objeto desta pesquisa. Diante desse contexto, apresenta-se o caso do avanço da tecnologia, mais precisamente o uso polêmico das células-tronco como uma questão que o direito deve responder. Reflexões sobre a incerteza e a contingência do uso dessas tecnologias serão feitas a fim de verificar o uso sistêmico do direito como modo de observar a complexidade envolvida na questão, utilizando-se, para isso do substrato oferecido pela teoria de Beck, Giddens e Luhmann.

The contemporanity points with respect to a new conception of the risk. One transfers of an idea of control and rationality for an uncertainty idea and probabilities. These transformations reflect in the system of the right that is obliged to decide and to face the problems of the current society. The form as the matrices of the right has dealt with the risk is object of this research. Ahead of this context, the case of the advance of the technology, more necessarily is presented, the controversial use of the stem cells as a question that the right must answer. Reflections on the uncertainty and the contingency of the use of these technologies will be made in order to verify the sistemic use of the right as way to observe the involved complexity in the question, using for this the theory by Beck, Giddens and Luhmann.

Syftet med den här studien var att undersöka vilka motiv som funnits till engelskämnets existens och funktion i två statliga utredningar. Som empiri tjänade SOU 1948:27, 1946 års skolkommissions betänkande med förslag till riktlinjer för det svenska skolväsendets utveckling och SOU 1992:94, Skola för bildning, på vilka en kvalitativ textanalys med hermeneutisk tolkning genomfördes. Studien tog sina teoretiska utgångspunkter och analysverktyg i Anthony Giddens teori om moderniteten, Ulf P. Lundgrens teori om läroplanskoder och tre forskardiskurser om kultur i språkundervisningen. Resultatet visade att engelskämnets existens inte var given för individen i SOU 1948:27, däremot för samhället då få samhällsresurser ansågs behövas för att ge individen relativt god färdighet jämfört med de andra stora kulturspråken, främst tyska. I SOU 1992:94 var engelskämnets existens självklar för både individen och samhället till följd av modernitetens framväxt och globaliseringen. Resultatet visade vidare att engelskämnets funktion speglade sin tid, vilket innebar att läsningen var den mest prioriterade färdigheten i SOU 1948:27. I SOU 1992:94 var däremot till följd av modernitetens framväxt och teknologiseringen, kommunikationen mellan individer den högst prioriterade färdigheten. Studien skall ses som ett inslag i debatten som ständigt behöver föras, vilka kunskaper som skall reproduceras och vilka färdigheter som bör uppmärksammas.

Abstract:
Tidningens personporträtt är en journalistisk genre som skiljer sig från konventionell nyhetsjournalistik genom en artig och hyllande, snarare än kritisk och granskande karaktär. I den här uppsatsen har jag för avsikt att undersöka hur personporträtt i två svenska tidningars söndagsbilagor, Dagens Nyheters ”DN söndag” och Aftonbladets ”Söndag” konstrueras. I uppsatsen studeras 8 personporträtt utifrån frågeställningen: vad i de valda personporträttens livsbeskrivningar väljer journalisten att se och hur beskrivs det?  Syftet är att placera frågeställningen i en sociologiteoretisk kontext av moderniteten som tillstånd och media som viktig social kunskapskälla och förmedlare av erfarenhet. Metoden som används är Norman Faircloughs kritiska diskursanalys. Analysens resultat visar att det är inre processer och inre utveckling som lyfts fram och problematiseras. Beundran för huvudpersonen konstrueras utifrån hur huvudpersonen övervunnit psykologiska svårigheter. En diskurs där den porträtterade beskrivs i en ödmjuk jantediskurs kombineras med journalistens beundrande röst i texten, en hyllningsdiskurs. I kombinationen av dessa konstrueras en bild av den porträtterade som framgångsrik och beundransvärd. Samhället och omgivningen som eventuellt hinder eller möjlighet i livet utelämnas till förmån för porträttet som beskrivning av ett ”själsliv” snarare än ett ”liv”.   Slutligen argumenterar jag för att den funna problematiseringen av inre processer tar fokus från yttre processer och individen i en samhällellig kontext. Då porträtten konstituerar inre kamp som mer central än strävan efter att förändra yttre faktorer som kan tänkas utlösa ångestkänslor eller nedstämdhet lägger detta stort ansvar på individen att själv lyckas hantera en samhällskontext vars struktur framstår som naturgiven.

The society of suburbs is frequently discussed in media, which often focus on the problems related to these areas. The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to examine how Swedish contemporary youth literature may contribute to create, strengthen and articulate social representations of the society of suburbs. The analysis is based upon six youth novels published during 2003 to 2007. The theoretical framework consists of two parts and is based on Anthony Giddens’ theories about late modern society in which the youth novels in our study take place, and those living conditions that this society creates. The other part is the theory of social representations. Shortly this theory deals with how people in society together form a collective idea of the world that surrounds them. They develop this idea together and in that way make it into a form of common sense. The method is based upon textual analysis. A model of analysis is constructed with its basis in the theories of Giddens. The themes of the model of analysis are derived from concepts central to Giddens except for the last theme, and these are life styles, limitations, expressions of emancipation and the suburb as place. The conclusion suggests that the literary description of the society of suburbs may contribute to strengthen and articulate negative social representations that are often build on prejudice, but it may also contribute to create and spread other representations and by that give a more nuanced and profound description.

O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar uma discussão do conceito de confiança nas relações amorosas, que possa ser útil às novas inquietações e indagações sobre as relações afetivas da contemporaneidade, considerando-se os atuais padrões de relacionamentos adotados. Para tanto, partiu-se de alguns autores que contribuíram na elucidação do tema no âmbito das Ciências Sociais: Georg Simmel, Michel Foucault, Niklas Luhmann, Zygmunt Bauman e Anthony Giddens. Em Georg Simmel, podem-se apontar três possibilidades para pensar o problema da confiança nas relações amorosas: 1. o surgimento de uma moral geral-particular resultaria no reconhecimento mútuo entre homens e mulheres, viabilizando a confiança entre eles, 2. as mulheres conquistariam a liberdade social , através da repetição da objetividade criada pelo homem. Neste caso, a confiança seria restrita ao âmbito público e 3. as mulheres seriam capazes de combinar os elementos subjetivos e objetivos, sendo a confiança no amor possível apenas entre elas. Os homens viveriam então, num estado solipsista. A confiança nas relações amorosas, em Michel Foucault, poderia ser extraída de uma determinada formação discursiva, e criada pelas subjetividades dos objetos do mundo, e, portanto, variante e envolvido tanto pelas práticas de sujeição quanto pelas de liberação. Segundo Niklas Luhmann, a confiança é importante porque reduz a complexidade social. Nas relações amorosas, esse conceito deve ser visto a partir de sua teoria dos sistemas ou perspectiva neo-funcionalista. A fragilidade das relações amorosas no mundo contemporâneo é refletida na sensação de perigo que depende da ação de terceiros ou de fatores sociais o que pode levar o indivíduo a correr o risco resultado da decisão do agente e envolver-se menos. Superando-se esta possibilidade da relação entre risco e perigo, o amor seria transformado em confiança, esvaziando-se. Para Zygmunt Bauman, o amor líquido é definido por relações de interesse e de extremo egoísmo. As relações afetivas são comparadas às bolsas de valores, e a confiança costuma ser transformada em desconfiança, em um curto período de tempo. A durabilidade e a estabilidade das relações são trocadas pela preocupação do indivíduo em conectar-se à rede narcísica do mundo contemporâneo. Com uma visão mais otimista acerca do amor, e pode-se dizer aqui, da confiança nas relações amorosas, Anthony Giddens parte da democratização da vida pessoal, enfatizando as conquistas das mulheres e a combinação entre equidade, liberdade e autonomia. Ao final da análise deste trabalho, a fidelidade evidenciou-se como um elemento central da confiança nas relações amorosas. Tentou-se, portanto, apresentar algumas categorias que pudessem refletir as motivações dos indivíduos relativas à infidelidade: 1.
