Abstract:
Classically trained vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and 2017 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Rhiannon Giddens has in recent years enjoyed increased visibility in the contemporary country music world. In 2016, she was a featured singer on Eric Church's top-ten country hit, “Kill a Word,” and she won the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass that same year. Giddens also had a recurring role as social worker Hanna Lee “Hallie” Jordan on the long-running musical drama Nashville in 2017 and 2018. While Giddens now enjoys a certain degree of acceptance in the country music world, she has not always felt included in the various largely white, contemporary American roots scenes. As such, she continues to speak out to audiences and the press about the erasure of African Americans from histories of string music, bluegrass, country, and other styles and forms of American roots music. Using Giddens's 2017 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) keynote, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops' music video for the song “Country Girl” from 2012's Leaving Eden, I demonstrate that Giddens effectively reclaims American old-time string music and country culture as black, subverting historically inaccurate racialized notions of country music authenticity.

Abstract:
The article analyzes migration processes in the European Union as an imperative of cosmopolitanism in the theory of the Second Modern by E. Giddens. It is established that when assessing migration processes in the context of the crisis of the policy of European multiculturalism, the scientist, as a representative of the theory of the Second Modern, proves that they coincided with deeper transformations in the system of political relations and political communication. A system of Giddens's arguments has been defined in favor of the thesis that migration in European societies of the Second Modern is not so much a local or regional issue as a result and a means of globalization. An important element in the theory of the Second Modern E. Giddens is the characterization of migration through the reference to the concept of “diaspora”, which exist today in the form of not only physical but also virtual communities, which are often characterized by a higher degree of self-awareness than before. E. Giddens argues that the European rethinking of the essence of migration processes occurs in the context of the crisis of the paradigm of multiculturalism. In the societies of the Second Modern, the political risks caused by the system of migration - globalization, arise when individual groups of society are treated as “isolated and another’s” or when they refer to themselves as such. Esta obra aponta questões de ordem metodológica e epistemológica na teoria da estruturação de Anthony Giddens, problemas reconhecidos e debatidos por vários de seus comentadores. Seguindo pistas encontradas nos próprios textos de Giddens, ela analisa com maior detalhe alguns livros de Mary Hesse e Roy Bhaskar, em busca de elementos que ajudem numa reconstrução metodológica da teoria de Giddens. Finalmente, ela argumenta em favor de uma maior atenção ao modelo de redes de Hesse, como uma ferramenta muito mais fértil para a análise de Giddens do que o realismo crítico de Bhaskar, para tentarmos resolver os dilemas que Giddens enfrenta. Como anexo, temos traduções de vários textos dos comentaristas mais importantes de Giddens, e também dois artigos do próprio, inéditos em português.
This work raises methodological and epistemological questions regarding Anthony Giddens theory of structuration, issues that have been acknowledged and debated by several of his critics. Following clues found in Giddens own texts, it analyses more deeply some works by Mary Hesse and Roy Bhaskar, searching for elements that would help with a methodological reconstruction of Giddens theory. Finally, it argues for greater attention towards Hesses network model, as a much more fruitful tool for analyzing Giddens than Bhaskars critical realism, in order to attempt to solve the dilemmas that Giddens faces. Also included are translations of several articles written by Giddens most important critics, and two papers by Giddens himself, previously unavailable in Portuguese.

O trabalho desenvolve uma exegese dos quadros teórico-metodológicos de análise da vida social avançados por Pierre Bourdieu e Anthony Giddens, concentrando-se nas formas pelas quais cada um destes autores ataca o problema fundacional da relação entre os planos da agência e da estrutura, tomados como as duas dimensões essencialmente constitutivas de qualquer retrato ou investigação do universo societário. O exame de tal problemática justifica-se pelo fato de que a teoria da prática de Bourdieu e a teoria da estruturação de Giddens têm como alicerce comum a tentativa de superação de um espectro de dicotomias inter-relacionadas que atravessam a história do pensamento científico-social no século XX, tendo sido expressas por uma variedade de rótulos binomiais, tais como subjetivismo/objetivismo, individualismo/holismo e micro/macro. A investigação das inovações conceituais e teses sócio-ontológicas desenhadas nas teorias dos autores supracitados é situada contra o pano de fundo de uma apresentação de tais antinomias, as quais indicam a tendência, corporificada em uma impressionante diversidade de perspectivas teórico-metodológicas, à formulação de concepções do relacionamento entre a ação individual subjetivamente propelida, de um lado, e as propriedades estruturais ou institucionais de formações coletivas, de outro, nas quais uma primazia ontológica e/ou explanatória é aprioristicamente imputada a uma destas esferas. Nesse sentido, o foco da exposição das armaduras teórico-analíticas de Giddens e Bourdieu se dirige ao elenco dos argumentos pelos quais ambos buscam demonstrar os limites de soluções teóricas unilaterais ao problema da articulação entre as instâncias da agência e da estrutura, ao mesmo tempo em que tecem instrumentos heurísticos orientados precisamente no sentido da captura da relação de condicionalidade recíproca estabelecida entre as mesmas no desenrolar da existência sócio-humana. Este percurso exegético desemboca, por fim, na conclusão de que a teoria da prática e a teoria da estruturação consistem em versões distintas de um modelo praxiológico-estruturacionista de investigação do mundo social, um enfoque que tem como pedra de toque a tese (trivial apenas à primeira vista) de que a caracterização da vida societária como fluxo ininterrupto de práticas configura-se como o ponto de partida heuristicamente mais frutífero para a construção de um retrato acurado dos processos simultâneos de constituição da sociedade pelos agentes e de constituição dos agentes pela sociedade. ____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The work develops an exegesis of the theoretical-methodological frameworks of social analysis formulated by Pierre Bourdieu and Anthony Giddens, focusing on the ways through which each of these authors tackles the foundational problem of the relation between the spheres of agency and structure, taken as the two essentially constitutive dimensions of any portrait or investigation of the societal universe. The exam of this problematic is justified by the fact that Bourdieu’s theory of practice and Giddens’s theory of structuration have as their common foundation the attempt to overcome a specter of inter-related dichotomies that stalk through the history of XXth century social-scientific thought, being referred to through a variety of binomial labels, such as subjectivism/objectivism, individualism/holism and micro/macro. The investigation of the conceptual innovations and social-ontological theses drawn in the theories of the above quoted athors is situated against the backdrop of a presentation of such antinomies, which indicate the tendency, embodied in an impressive diversity of theoretical-methodological perspectives, towards the formulation of conceptions of the relationship between subjectively propelled individual action, on the one hand, and structural or institutional properties of collective formations, on the other, in which an ontological and/or explanatory primacy is aprioristically imputed to one of these spheres. The focus of the exposition of the theoretical-analytical armors of Giddens and Bourdieu is directed towards the reunion of the arguments through which both try to demonstrate the limits of unilateral theoretical solutions to the problem of the articulation between the instances of agency and structure, while weaving, at the same time, heuristic instruments oriented precisely towards the capture of the relation of reciprocal conditionality established between those instances in the course of human social existence. This exegetical path leads, at last, to the conclusion that the theory of practice and the theory of structuration consist in two distinct versions of a praxeological-structurationist model of investigation of the social world, an approach that has as its cornerstone the thesis (a trivial one only at first sight) that states that the characterization of societal life as an endless flow of practices constitutes the heuristically most fruitful starting point to the construction of an accurate portrait of the simultaneous processes of constitution of society by agents and of constitution of agents by society.

Abstract:

Syftet med arbetet är att förstå varför människor i dagens samhälle väljer att gifta sig. Vad är skälen för giftermål när man i dagens Sverige kan bo i ett samboförhållande utan att vara gift. Är kärleken viktigast eller finns det andra aspekter som påverkar människor när de väljer att ingå ett äktenskap? Huvudtanken med arbetet är att förstå människor som ingår äktenskap och varför de gör det, samtidigt vill vi förstå de som bor i ett samboförhållande och varför de inte gifter sig. För att förstå detta har vi valt att utgå från kvalitativ metod. Kvalitativ metod utfördes genom intervjuer på fem kvinnor och onlineforskning gick ut på att starta ett forum på en bröllopssajt på Internet.

Vi har utgått från sociologiska teorier som vi anser är relevanta för vårt valda ämne där vi har använt oss av Giddens syn på äktenskap samt utgått från boken I det sociala landskapet

Vår frågeställning lyder: Varför gifter man sig?

Vår undersökning visade att kärleken var den största anledningen till varför människor väljer att gifta sig. Man gifter sig för att skapa ett starkare band mellan varandra, samtidigt leder det vidare till önskan om att bilda en gemensam familj.

An ongoing investigation into the declining participation of women in IT education and professional level work has recently focused on professional women’s perceptions of the IT industry. This paper presents some of the findings from a discourse analysis of interviews with thirty-two female and two male IT professionals. The analysis identified a distinctive characteristic of the women’s discourse in the representation of mutually exclusive attributes, skills and attitudes as closely identified with gender. This paper explores two of these dualisms - women’s perceptions of the rapid and continuous change characteristic of the IT industry and the dualism of the public (work) and private (domestic) spheres. The implications of rapid change and the concomitant long working hours characteristic of the IT industry, are discussed in relation to women’s continued responsibility for social and domestic life. Discourse analysis is used to identify contradictions in the women’s talk and to relate this to tensions in the IT industry and the wider social context. Although these women characterise themselves as ‘different’ from most women, in their skills, aptitudes and attitudes towards IT, this characterisation shows tensions and contradictions. The authors use Giddens’ perspective on identity formation and the structuration of institutions (Giddens, 1984; 1991) to identify factors, which may further discourage women from participating in IT education and work.

Abstract:
Pulsatile laminar-turbulent transitional flow in a three-dimensional (3D) constricted channel represents a challenging topic and has many important applications in bio-medical engineering. In this research, we numerically investigate the physics of a physiological pulsatile flow confined within a 3D channel with an idealized stenosis formed eccentrically on the top wall using the method of large-eddy simulation (LES). The advanced dynamic nonlinear subgrid-scale stress (SGS) model of Wang and Bergstrom [1] was implemented in the current LES approach to properly resolve the unrealistic SGS dissipation effects and numerical instabilities that are intrinsic to the Smagorinsky type dynamic models (DM). The Reynolds numbers tested in the simulation are 1700 and 2000, which are characteristic of human blood flows in large arteries. An in-house 3-D LES code has been modified to conduct our unsteady numerical simulations, and the results obtained have been validated using two different grid arrangements and the experimental results of Ahmed and Giddens [2]. The numerical results have been examined in terms of the resolved mean velocity, turbulence kinetic energy, viscous wall shear stress, resolved and subgrid-scale Reynolds stresses, as well as the local kinetic energy fluxes between the filtered and subgrid scales.

La siguiente comunicación aborda la investigación doctoral acerca de los procesos de creación de productos culturales artesanales que se fundan en la identidad cultural tradicional del Archipiélago de Chiloé y que se conciben para la industria del turismo. El Archipiélago de Chiloé (Chile) es un lugar que tiene la particularidad de mantener un marcado carácter tradicional en su cultura, y que se ve enfrentado en la actualidad al conflicto con la globalización, en la que el turismo ha jugado un rol muy importante. Por ello desarrollaremos en una primera parte los conceptos que estructuran el análisis: identidad cultural, tradición, turismo y posmodernidad (Freedman, Castells, Hall, Giddens, Bauman, Lipovetsky, McCannel, Urry) enfocándonos en proporcionar los antecedentes acerca de la realidad cultural de nuestro campo de estudio.Tras exponer esos antecedentes, se explicitará el marco metodológico que ha encauzado la investigación sobre la base de un modelo etnográfico que, a partir de la observación, el registro fotográfico y entrevistas, permitirá el análisis de los objetos artesanales y su carácter mediatizador de significados culturales tradicionales para el contexto del turismo. En una primera instancia nos abocaremos al diagnóstico del mercado de los productos de diseño artesanal que se ofrecen en Chiloé, analizándolos tanto desde una perspectiva semiótica, como desde el estructuralismo. De ello podremos evidenciar el choque o conflicto que se produce en el contexto del turismo y su impacto en los procesos de creación, generando productos ambiguos, híbridos, que se construyen desde la lógica del mercado intentando reivindicar una identidad cultural tradicional, a veces de manera inadecuada.Finalmente nos referiremos a un caso de producto de diseño de “modernidad apropiada”, concepto desarrollado por Sergio Mansilla, importante investigador sobre Chiloé, y que a modo de conclusión permitirá comprender el rol del diseño en el encuentro y diálogo entre lo local y lo global.http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ANIAV.2017.5374

Abstract:
The predecessors of this research project were the efforts to classify the Information Systems (IS) research along paradigmatic lines. While the paradigmatic classifications are very useful philosophically, examination of an issue such as the use of Information Systems and the related socioorganizational issues require a classification that is centered around the social phenomenon of the use and effects of IS. Our approach to the categorization of the body of knowledge captured in the existing Information Systems literature can make the contributions to the use side of Information Systems more explicit. The new twist of this approach is that it provide an integrative perspectives on IS use by seeking to bridge the most prevalent divides currently fragmenting the IS literature. We call our proposal for a new approach to literature classification “substance oriented”, because it follows neither the latest paradigmatic classification nor earlier bottom up citation or key word based literature classification schemes. Instead it explicitly builds on social theory concepts directly relevant for the “user-domain” and is in this sense “substance-oriented”, at least at its highest level. In its current version, the paper identifies the core concepts of Gidden’s Structuration Theory (ST) as being relatively most suited for capturing user concerns in the existing archival body of IS research publications.
