Abstract:
This paper chronicles Internet learning and usage habits of a sample size of 113 of the total universe of 320 CUNY (City Univeristy of New York) academic librarians as of the fall 1998 semester. The respondents to the survey represent a random sample of the eleven senior colleges, six junior colleges, the graduate center library and the law school library. The Internet usage and learning habits of CUNY librarians demonstrate the proactive approach that CUNY library management took to the technological training needs of its employees. The survey results show that work-led training consisted mostly of mentoring by colleagues and in-house workshops. Self-directed learning (SDL) was also an important component of the total Internet learning picture for these CUNY librarians. In the course of this paper's completion it was noted that despite the wide array of technological training methods available that use multimedia and other electronic mediums, human training, either peer to peer or workshop methods, were the most widely used modality. The sample of librarians surveyed was a heterogeneous sample in that five decades of librarians were represented; however, it was a group of individual librarians which were united by showing their dedication through service to the CUNY mission of offering access to a quality education regardless of the student's race, religion, or ethnicity.

Abstract:
The research that follows intends to make an integral contribution to the field of education and also seeks to: collect the main pedagogical models of e-learning, raise awareness among institutions of higher education on the need to develop digital skills in their faculty, and deliver a proposal for teaching digital literacy. It is perceived that many teachers have not received the optimal training to employ virtual education methods and therefore the tools and strategies used for teaching and learning are poor, which has led to an increased number of students who drop out. A questionnaire was sent to fourth universities that have virtual education programs in order to determine the weaknesses of teachers using those methods. Also, a complete theoretical revision was conducted in order to identify an appropriate pedagogical model for e-learning and to design a digital literacy proposal for faculty members After an extensive review of the subject it was determined that the pedagogical model that best supports e-learning instruction is the socio-critical constructivist approach, which favors self-learning and “self-critical reflection,” and considers both the teaching role and autonomous learning. Finally, an integrated plan for teaching digital literacy focused on technological, cognitive, pedagogical, communicative, organizational, and social components was developed, which specified the tools to integrate into each section, along with time and costs. This was done in order to deliver a practical methodological proposal to institutions of higher education.

Abstract:
Since ancient times, libraries constitute site of knowledge and place where everybody can find the required information but, at the same time, be educated in order to acquire information literacy. The medical librarians following the developments in health sciences and in adults’ education get continuously into roles that result from their conditions of work and make the systematic education essential. In order to cope with their role they owe to combine knowledge, skills and attitudes so much concerning their job what concerning the training of adult scientists. The subject, therefore, of the present study is the research of training needs of medical librarians of Greece. It is more specifically researched on one side: (1) The way that the educational needs of medical librarians are shaped according to the subject specialisation, the training programs that have participated in and the informative needs of library’s users and on the other side, (2) the opinions of medical librarians for the necessity of subject specialisation of their work, but also for their ability to instruct the users of medical libraries. Objective of this study (target group) are the librarians of health sciences of Greece. The study is based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative approach. Questionnaires were sent to all medical librarians and interviews were taken place in order to study their opinions deeply. The results of the study showed that the Greek medical librarians have specific educational needs that are also detected by them. These educational needs concern in the continuing education in their job, in the subject specialisation and in the acquisition of the ability to instruct adult users. At the same time, the medical librarians prefer distance learning as main training method (on-line courses, workshops). The most important motive for their educational training is the increase of knowledge and skills, while the cost of the courses is the major disincentive. Even though, they consider continuing education important they haven’t participated in any educational course concerning their job because they are not provided such by any institution. The medical librarians– impelled by the developments- train informally the users of the library, but, at the same time, declare that they need further education in teaching techniques and learning theories for the constitution of a line of a more effective training..

Abstract:
The present work must like objective show the developed process to determine the construction of a self-training manual of the personnel of the new entrance for the cataloguing areas in the Libraries of ITESM, Zona Metropolitana de Monterrey, that at the moment is 7. The importance is demonstrated on the one hand less than of determining the needs of information for that type of personnel, being realized an investigation between personnel entered with 2 years of antiquity in the Libraries above indicated, in the mentioned area. It is used the qualitative method and the described interview (located or of depth) to be able to determine the elements necessary to integrate in a self-training manual. The manual is designed, mediating previous consultations with the own interviewed people, and test with 9 people of the Libraries of the area, but without knowledge of cataloguing (or minimums). Also the Manual in its version for tutor with 3 supervisors tries on and the compilation of the information is realized on the experience for its evaluation. With the experience and information available, as a result of this pilot test one concludes in general terms that the Manual is a tool of effective self-training, that must be fit according to the feedback received by the participants of the test for an effective putting in practice in initial processes of training of Cataloguing in the ITESM-ZMM.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the number of OGDs (oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopies) trainees need to perform to acquire competency in terms of successful unassisted completion to the second part of the duodenum 95% of the time. Design: OGD data were retrieved from the trainee e-portfolio developed by the Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy ( JAG) in the UK. All trainees were included unless they were known to have a baseline experience of >20 procedures or had submitted data for <20 procedures. The primary outcome measure was OGD completion, defined as passage of the endoscope to the second part of the duodenum without physical assistance. The number of OGDs required to achieve a 95% completion rate was calculated by the moving average method and learning curve cumulative summation (LC-Cusum) analysis. To determine which factors were independently associated with OGD completion, a mixed effects logistic regression model was constructed with OGD completion as the outcome variable. Results: Data were analysed for 1255 trainees over 288 centres, representing 243 555 OGDs. By moving average method, trainees attained a 95% completion rate at 187 procedures. By LC-Cusum analysis, after 200 procedures, >90% trainees had attained a 95% completion rate. Total number of OGDs performed, trainee age and experience in lower GI endoscopy were factors independently associated with OGD completion. Conclusions: There are limited published data on the OGD learning curve. This is the largest study to date analysing the learning curve for competency acquisition. The JAG competency requirement for 200 procedures appears appropriate

Abstract:
This paper focuses in the study and use of alternative metrics of academic impact based on online tools and activities that became known as altmetrics, or in Portuguese, altmetria. Impact assessment of the scientific output has been the subject of constant discussion in the academic community. However, traditional indicators of measuring the impact of scientific journals and articles have been subject to important criticisms about its validity and timeliness, and together with a scenario of increased use of electronic media in scientific communication, led the academic community to seek and develop alternative ways to measure, evaluate and legitimize this scientific output. To fulfill the need to better understand the context and implications of altmetrics in the evaluation of academic output, especially in the context of the Brazilian academic community, this work presents basic concepts about alternative metrics and their application, focusing on the work of librarians and other professionals involved with scientific communication, such as researchers, scientific publishers and academic managers. The work describes the main tools available to capture and generate altmetrics, as well as national and international initiatives underway with a view to developing policies for the use of alternative metrics. The main product of this research is presented as a practical guide on how to use altmetrics, focused on the role of librarians and other professionals related to scientific communication.

Abstract:
Given that Wikipedia entries are likely to extert a strong influence on how literary texts are perceived - due to their preferential ranking in Google - there is some demand that research dealing with the transfer of knowledge on literature to the public be more concerned with looking into both the content that is available for free on the Web and any aspect that may come with writing about literature for free. This contribution argues from within Wikipedia's multidisciplinary consensus-driven space in which propositional knowledge is given priority that it would be essential for entries on fiction to present non-propositional knowledge as being one of its hallmarks. For this aim, a special concept is developed that is designed to function as the study's formal object: "Erlesnis" (which in German is a pun that combines "Erlebnis" - adventure experience - and "lesen" - reading). It is defined as non-propositional knowledge that has been acquired in an individual reading process. Writing about one's own Erlesnis in new ways is being tried out in four essays, and on de.wikipedia.org an experiment is conducted to find out what community members think about the idea of including, in entries on fiction, sections specifically designed to report about what people felt like when reading a certain text. Finally, a draft typology of Erlesnis-writing is suggested. This contribution is the first of its kind internationally to deal with Wikipedia from the point of view of transfer of knowledge on literature to the public. For the theory of this field of research some new aspects are offered for debate.

Abstract:
Social Sciences have a relevant importance, because they assist individuals to make sense of the social world and to situate their ideas, fears, interests, values and relationships at the center of the social processes they reflect and configure. However, a diagnosis made in the main doctoral programs of the Pedagogical Sciences in Cuba revealed deficiencies and deficiencies that led to the formulation of the scientific problem of the present investigation: insufficiencies in the process of interpretation of the social reality, in relation to its qualitative and complex nature, which limits the scientific performance of professionals. The object of the research is, therefore, the scientific research process of the Social Sciences and its field of action: the dynamics of information processing in the Social Sciences research process. The main research results are: a model of the dynamics of information processing in social investigations, which becomes an integrative didactic method for such processing, as a theoretical contribution, and a system of methodological procedures for processing information in the social investigations, as a practical contribution. It is revealed as essential regularity, the integrating logic between the understanding of the validity and reliability of social information and the systematization of the synthesis and the concretion of this information, consistent with a qualitative and quantitative processing of it. The pertinence and scientific feasibility of the research results was assessed satisfactorily through a consultation with experts and the corroboration of the partial application of the system of methodological procedures.

Abstract:
In this work, it was pointed out the infocommunicational competences as a possibility to educate for information in university libraries, based on actions developed by librarians. University libraries are drivers to promote infocommunication skills, playing an essential role in the formation of the academic community, as well as serving as a support for information, in addition to supporting the four pillars of the university: teaching, research, extension and innovation. Under the issue of investigating whether university librarians understand the problem of misinformation as their own and how infocommunication skills can help fight misinformation, the objective of this research is to analyze the implications of infocommunication skills in fighting misinformation in the scope of action of librarians who they work in university libraries. Supported by a theoretical framework, the dissertation discusses the phenomenon of disinformation, the role of university libraries in society, the attribution to librarians of combating disinformation, the impacts of disinformation on democracy in a post-truth scenario and the importance of education for information through the promotion of infocommunication skills. In an empirical collection, based on interviews with university librarians from the south of Rio Grande do Sul, it was discovered how and if the professionals are acting in the fight against misinformation, and how and how their responsibility to combat misinformation is understood. The research uses qualitative, descriptive and exploratory methods, using for data analysis the French-line discourse analysis and elements of infocommunication skills, by Borges (2018, appendix), to relate the actions described by the interviewees with each competence in information and in Communication. Furthermore, the levels of information literacy in university libraries by Uribe-Tirado and Pinto (2014) are considered, in order to show whether the actions promoted have a more consistent focus on training or on literacy/promotion of infocommunicational skills. From the empirical research, the actions that are promoted by the interviewed librarians were listed, relating to infocommunicational skills, in which it could be seen that information skills are usually promoted more than communication skills. It was also observed that the interviewees are concerned with the phenomenon of misinformation and consider it a strong point for their professional performance, but they still do not develop actions that educate for information, with an autonomous or political bias, and do not promote infocommunicational skills yet. in their daily activities, in the case of level initiatives with a greater instrumental focus, which would be level 2 by Uribe-Tirado and Pinto.

Digital information and economic activity: gaps and progress in Spain during the period 2007-2010 In this dissertation we evaluate some of the progresses and gaps that can be observed in the supply and delivery of digital information for economic activity in Spain during the period 2007-2010 from four different viewpoints. These four study areas are: - the Spanish e-Administration as an energizing factor of all national economic sectors, and the digital information market in particular; - the contribution made by the Spanish Chambers of Commerce in digital information for economic activity; - changes, gaps and progresses made in the provision of digital information to the agricultural sector; - the presence of subjects related to the information on economic activity in the curricula aimed to train information professionals at the Spanish universities. To put in context the research work, we have also analyzed the development and current status of each of the four study areas. The dissertation highlights the importance the Spanish Public Administration has had in the past, and still has, in the development of the electronic information industry in Spain. Contributions made by private initiatives are also discussed. Furthermore, in the four study areas we observe dynamics which take place at very different speeds. This depends on the contribution of the actor or group of actors involved in each case. Particularly notable was the low presence of information on economic activity in the curricula aimed to train information professionals in Spanish universities.
