Abstract:
We consider minimal effective interactions of the 750 GeV mass resonance observed recently by ATLAS and CMS. Assuming a new scalar and gauge invariant effective interactions leads to nontrivial two-particle scattering amplitudes with asymptotic gauge boson states. The longitudinally polarized W[Formula: see text] and Z bosons interacting via dimension-five effective operators provide stringent constraints on the validity of the effective model. The large width found by ATLAS implying a bound of approximately 500 GeV already below the resonance, turns this scenario unlikely. For production mainly in gluon fusion, we get an upper bound of [Formula: see text] 1.3 TeV and strong limits on the masses of the underlying vector-like fermions are given.

Abstract:
Recent observations of gamma rays with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) in the direction of the inner galaxy revealed a mysterious excess of GeV. Its intensity is significantly above predictions of the standard model of cosmic rays (CRs) generation and propagation with a peak in the spectrum around a few GeV. Popular interpretations of this excess are that it is due to either spherically distributed annihilating dark matter (DM) or an abnormal population of millisecond pulsars. We suggest an alternative explanation of the excess through the CR interactions with molecular clouds in the Galactic Center (GC) region. We assumed that the excess could be imitated by the emission of molecular clouds with depleted density of CRs with energies below ∼10 GeV inside. A novelty of our work is in detailed elaboration of the depletion mechanism of CRs with the mentioned energies through the “barrier” near the cloud edge formed by the self-excited MHD turbulence. This depletion of CRs inside the clouds may be a reason for the deficit of gamma rays from the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) at energies below a few GeV. This in turn changes the ratio between various emission components at those energies and may potentially absorb the GeV excess by a simple renormalization of key components.

Abstract:
The LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS have reported an excess in the diphoton spectrum at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]750 GeV. At the same time the motivation for Supersymmetry (SUSY) remains unbowed. Consequently, we review briefly the proposals to explain this excess in SUSY, focusing on “pure” (N)MSSM solutions. We then review in more detail a proposal to realize this excess within the NMSSM. In this particular scenario a Higgs boson with mass around 750 GeV decays to two light pseudo-scalar Higgs bosons. Via mixing with the pion these pseudo-scalars decay into a pair of highly collimated photons, which are identified as one photon, thus resulting in the observed signal.

Abstract:
We present the first measurements of [Formula: see text] pair production at very low transverse momentum ([Formula: see text] 0.15 GeV/[Formula: see text]) in Au + Au collisions at [Formula: see text] = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at [Formula: see text] = 193 GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant excess, with respect to known hadronic contributions, is observed in 60-80% central heavy-ion collisions over the whole [Formula: see text] range. Remarkably, the excess almost entirely happens below [Formula: see text] 0.15 GeV/[Formula: see text], and can not be explained by a theoretical model calculation incorporating in-medium broadened [Formula: see text] spectral function. Moreover, the observed excess yield has no significant centrality dependence. In addition, the steepness of [Formula: see text] distribution exhibits mild invariant mass and collision species dependence.

Abstract:
Recently, many studies indicate that the GeV gamma ray excess signal from the central Milky Way can be best explained by ∼40–50 GeV dark matter annihilating via the b b ¯ channel. However, this model appears to be disfavored by the recent Fermi-LAT data for dwarf spheroidal galaxies and the constraint from synchrotron radiation. In this article, we describe a consistent picture to relieve the tensions between the dark matter annihilation model and the observations. We show that a baryonic feedback process is the key to alleviate the tensions and the ∼40–50 GeV dark matter model is still the best one to account for the GeV gamma ray excess in the Milky Way.

A search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson decaying into τ pairs is performed using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012. An excess of events is observed over a broad range of Higgs mass hypotheses, with a maximum local significance of 2.93 standard deviations at mH = 120 GeV. The excess is compatible with the presence of a standard-model Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV/c2.

We report the measurements of e+e- pair production at very low e+e- pair transverse momentum (pT < 0.15 GeV/c) in Au+Au collisions at [see formula in PDF] = 200 GeV and U+U collisions at [see formula in PDF] = 193 GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In 60-80% centrality, significant excesses are observed with respect to hadronic cocktails in both Au+Au and U+U collisions. These excess yields can not be explained by a theoretical model calculation incorporating in-medium broadened ρ spectral function. Additionally, the [see formula in PDF] distribution for excess yield is shown and found to be exponential at very low pT.

AbstractA clear excess in the Fermi-LAT data is present at energies around a few GeV. The spectrum of this so-called ’GeV excess’ is remarkably similar to the expected annihilation signal of WIMP dark matter. However, a large bulge population of millisecond pulsars living below the Fermi–LAT detection threshold could also explain the excess spectrum. In a recent work we optimized the search for sub-threshold sources, by applying a wavelet transform to the Fermi–LAT gamma-ray data. In the Inner-Galaxy the wavelet signal is significantly enhanced, providing supportive evidence for the point source interpretation of the excess. In these proceedings we will extent our previous work with a spectral analysis and elaborate on the potential contamination from substructures in the gas.

Abstract:
The CMS collaboration reported an intriguing [Formula: see text] (local) excess at 96 GeV in the light Higgs-boson search in the diphoton decay mode. This mass coincides with a [Formula: see text] (local) excess in the [Formula: see text] final state at LEP. We briefly review the proposed combined interpretations for the two excesses. In more detail, we review the interpretation of this possible signal as the lightest Higgs boson in the 2 Higgs Doublet Model with an additional real Higgs singlet (N2HDM). We show which channels have the best prospects for the discovery of additional Higgs bosons at the upcoming Run 3 of the LHC.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo pensar a questão geográfica em sua especificidade no campo literário como articuladora de um pensamento comunitário espacial a partir de uma leitura cerrada de duas obras seminais portuguesas, o Livro do Desassossego, de Fernando Pessoa, e Os Passos em Volta, de Herberto Helder. Compreendendo o espaço literário como lugar de produção de territorialidades heterotópicas por uma grafia, aqui denominada geo-grafia, pretende-se cartografá-las em sua dimensão comunitária, dada pelo encontro entre um e outro, entre o que se conhece e o que traz um potencial de estranhamento. Essas geo-grafias serão expostas em dois guias cartográficos aqui trabalhados: o mapa, interessado nos movimentos de produção de cada espacialidade produzida nas obras, e o atlas, voltado a compreender os limites desses mapas quando em conjunto. Os mapas, nos quais fluem movimentos literários específicos e singulares, através de vestígios, tanto em termos narrativos quanto da grafia e escrita, são os objetos desta tese, a fim de expor os modos como Pessoa e Helder fundam comunidades a partir de desfuncionalizações, inoperalizações e transformações na língua pelos espaços. O atlas, por sua vez, dá prosseguimento a tal olhar geo-gráfico, na medida em que os mapas que o compõem circunscrevem uma noção de totalidade que tende ou não à sua própria dissolução. Pretende-se assim vincular a exemplaridade da escrita dessas duas obras a uma noção de comunidade geo-graficamente realizada.

Abstract:
El hierro es un mineral esencial para la vida, y así como su deficiencia está claramente establecida como un problema de salud, la elevación moderada de sus niveles no está científicamente reconocida como perjuicio para la salud. No es así, sin embargo, con el nivel excesivamente elevado, en el cual si está establecida una enfermedad hereditaria grave, la Hemocromatosis Hereditaria, relacionada con la presencia de mutaciones en el gen HFE. Estas mutaciones provocan un aumento de la absorción del hierro dietético hasta provocar una sobrecarga de hierro grave que lesiona las células corporales perjudicando su funcionamiento.<br/>Sin embargo en los últimos años, los niveles ligeramente elevados de hierro se han asociado a un aumento del estrés oxidativo que puede contribuir en la aparición de enfermedades crónicas y muy frecuentes en nuestra sociedad como enfermedad cardiovascular, cáncer, diabetes y diversas enfermedades neurodegenerativas.<br/>Ante esta situación de los conocimientos científicos, en este estudio nos propusimos establecer la prevalencia de las mutaciones en el gen HFE (C282Y, H63D y S65C) y la prevalencia de la sobrecarga de hierro moderada en la población general con el objetivo novedoso de poder estudiar las relaciones que se establecieran entre las mutaciones del gen HFE, la dieta y los niveles de hierro y analizar el efecto de dichos niveles sobre el estrés oxidativo en la misma muestra de sujetos. Para ello estudiamos 815 individuos de tres municipios de la provincia de Tarragona, representativos de nuestra población. <br/>Del estudio hemos obtenido que un elevado porcentaje (46%) de los sujetos presentan mutaciones en el gen HFE y un 25,3 % presentan sobrecarga de hierro (22,6% moderada y 2,7% severa). La presencia de algunos genotipos, en concreto los genotipos compuestos C282Y/H63D y H63D/S65C, poco frecuentes en nuestra población (2,5%), son los que más aumentan los niveles de hierro. La ingesta de hierro y alcohol y la disminución de la ingesta de calcio también se relacionan con un aumento de los niveles de hierro orgánico. También hemos podido observar que las mujeres que presentan un aumento de los niveles de hierro circulante así como aquellas que ingieren más hierro dietético, tienen mayor estrés oxidativo en el organismo. Además, los sujetos con mayores niveles de hierro almacenado a nivel corporal así como los que ingieren mayores cantidades de vitamina C y D, presentan una mayor capacidad antioxidante en el organismo. <br/>Con lo cual podemos concluir que en nuestra población general, la presencia de ciertos genotipos conjuntamente con un tipo determinado de consumo dietético tiene un mayor riesgo de tener un estado de hierro corporal moderadamente elevado que está relacionado con el perjuicio del estrés oxidativo. Por tanto, si se confirmaran estas relaciones, la actuación de medidas preventivas para corregirlas mejoraría el estado de salud de la población.<br>Iron is a mineral that is essential to life and although its lack is clearly recognized as being harmful to health, moderate increases in levels are not. Excessive increases in levels, however, have been established as a serious hereditary disease, Hereditary Hemochromatosis, which is caused by mutations in the HFE gene. These mutations increase the absorption of dietary iron, leading to a serious iron overload that damages the body cells and prevents them from functioning as they should.<br/>In recent years, however, slightly increased iron levels have been associated with an increase in oxidative stress that may contribute to the appearance of chronic diseases that are very common in our society such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and several neurodegenerative diseases.<br/>In this study, therefore, we aimed to establish the prevalence of mutations in the HFE gene (C282Y, H63D and S65C) and the prevalence of moderate iron overload in the general population so that we could then go on to study the relations between the mutations of the HFE gene, diet and iron levels, and analyze the effect of these levels on the oxidative stress in the same sample of subjects. To this end, we studied 815 individuals from three municipalities in the province of Tarragona who were representative of our population.<br/>Our study shows that a high percentage (46%) of subjects have mutations in the HFE gene and that 25.3% have iron overload (moderate in 22.6% and severe in 2.7%). Such genotypes as the compounds C282Y/H63D and H63D/S65C, which are not very common in our population (2.5%), most increase iron levels. The intake of iron and alcohol, and the decrease in calcium intake are also associated with an increase in the levels of organic iron. We also observed that women who have increased levels of circulating iron and those who have high intakes of dietary iron have greater oxidative stress in the organism. What is more, subjects with higher levels of iron stored in the body and those with the highest intakes of vitamin C and D have a greater antioxidant capacity in the organism.<br/>This leads us to conclude that in our general population, the presence of certain genotypes together with a particular dietary intake involves a greater risk of moderately high body iron, which is associated with oxidative stress damage. If these relations are confirmed, measures for correcting them would improve the health of the population.

Abstract:
O excesso de nutrientes como nitrogênio e fósforo em efluentes de estação de tratamento de esgoto sanitário pode provocar a eutrofização nos corpos d\'aguas receptoras. Esse processo gera efeitos negativos para a engenharia sanitária, dependendo do grau de qualidade e do uso de água requeridos. Para o abastecimento público, são exigidos métodos e processos de tratamentos avançados, quando a fonte hídrica está eutrofizada. Neste sentido, sistemas aeróbios de lodos ativados passaram a se destacar também como removedores de nutrientes por processos biológicos, após sofrerem algumas modificações operacionais. Um meio para otimizar o processo de remoção biológica do fósforo em excesso (EBPR) é promover condições ideais para o crescimento dos organismos acumuladores de fósforo. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar uma estação piloto de lodos ativados modificados, para a remoção de fósforo em excesso, utilizados no tratamento de esgoto sanitário, localizada na ETE da cidade de Tóquio - Japão. Essa estação piloto constituía-se de três sistemas de reação (1, 2 e 3), sendo que cada sistema era compartimentado e submetido às condições anaeróbia, anóxica e aeróbia. A avaliação dos três sistemas de reação, consistiu na verificação do desempenho deles com relação a DBO e fósforo e monitoramento da estrutura da comunidade microbiana, pela técnica da eletroforese em gel de gradiente desnaturante (DGGE). O desempenho em relação a DBOs (mg/L) nos três sistemas de reação, sempre foi superior a 90% e a eficiência da remoção do fósforo (%) na forma de fosfato (P-PO4 - mg/L) foi superior, em geral, a 70%, considerando os valores de entrada das alimentações e saída no último compartimento dos três sistemas de reação. Verificou-se que a estrutura da comunidade microbiana apresentou uma grande diversidade, devido aos números de bandas padrões encontradas nas amostras analisadas. Observou-se também uma grande similaridade ) da estrutura da comunidade microbiana nos sistemas estudados, possivelmente, relacionada ao mesmo afluente (esgoto sanitário) e ao mesmo tipo de recirculação interna e do lodo. As mudanças das estruturas das comunidades microbianas foram pequenas, diante das mudanças temporais e operacionais. No entanto, observou-se que o sistema foi menos eficiente (parâmetros de desempenho), frente a essas mudanças, o que pode estar mais relacionado à redução das atividades dos microrganismos do que com as estruturas microbianas.<br>The excess of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate in effluents of treatment plants for sanitary sewage can cause eutrophication in the receiving body of water. Given that process generates negative effects for the sanitary engineering depending on the degree of the quality and of the requested use of water. For the public provisioning, methods and processes of advanced treatments are demanded, when the water body is eutrophic. In this sense, aerobic systems of activated sludge have been expanded also to the processes of biological removal of nutrients after some operational modifications. By means of the optimization process of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) will promote ideal conditions for the growth of polyphosphate accumulating organisms. This work had as its objective to evaluate a pilot station modified activated sludge, used for the treatment of sanitary sewage, but specifically for the enhanced phosphorus removal, located in the ETE of the city of Tokyo - Japan. These pilot station was constituted of three reaction systems (1, 2 and 3), and each system were composed of compartments and were submitted to anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic conditions. The evaluation of the three reaction systems, consisted of the verification of the performance of the systems with regard to BOD and phosphate which were monitored through microbial community\'s structure, for the biological phosphorus removal technique (DGGE). The performance in relation to the BODS (mg/L) in the three reaction systems was always above 90% and the efficiency of the removal of phosphorus (%) in the form of phosphate (P-PO4 - mg/L) was in general better than 70%, considering the values of influent and effluent from the last compartment of the three reaction systems. It was verified that the microbial community structure presented a great diversity, due to the standard numbers of bands found in the analyzed samples. A great similarity of the microbial community structure was observed in the studied systems, possibly being related to the same influent (domestic sewage) and to the same type of intern recirculation and of the sludge. The changes of the microbial communities structures were small, before the temporary and operational changes. However, it was observed that the system was less effiecient (performance parametrs) front to those changes, what can be more related the reduction of the activities of the microorganisms than with the microbial structures.

Abstract:
This thesis explores EU-Brazil relations and answers the question of why these two actors have failed to use the bilateral level of their cooperation as a platform to enhance their coordination in multilateral arenas. The thesis develops a framework to explain the linkage between levels of cooperation within a particular bilateral relationship that focuses on both agents and issues. The argument of “level-linkage” is empirically tested in three case-studies: climate change, trade, and human rights. The thesis finds that the greater the openness of a regime to influences from other levels of cooperation, the more likely level-linkage is to occur. However, level-linkage is restricted to where the approaches of the two partners towards multilateralism are compatible. Preferences for partners were also not the main constraint to the promotion of an EU-Brazil strategic partnership in multilateral arenas. Instead, as this thesis reveals, the degree of coordination in national foreign policy-making institutions is the key determinant of level-linkage. These findings support the argument that the dynamics between agents and the specificities of issues do matter in explaining the relation between bilateral and multilateral levels of cooperation. In this light, this thesis contributes to the analysis of bilateral relationships within a multi-level structure, ultimately advancing academic research in international cooperation. It also contributes to the literature on foreign policy analysis and to an emerging body of scholarship in EU-Brazil relations.

AbstractThe Lagos-Ibadan and Lagos-Badagry roads were built in the 1970s and 1990s, but had become outgrown by traffic needs and catastrophically congested, so widening and refurbishing projects were initiated. The Lagos-Ibadan Road will likely be completed in 2022, but it is not an example of a good project. It was started with a private–public partnership (PPP) scheme, which was then sabotaged after a government change, so funding became unstable leading to walk outs by contractors. Finally, the government repossessed the project and may finally get to completion, but only after design degradations, delays and overruns.The Lagos-Ibadan project is stalled, an example of overambitious design, unreliable funding, questionable accounting and misrepresentations to the public, with excuses that point away from the sources of the problems. The currently visible final result is a reduction of the project to “palliative measures” (i.e. repairing what is there rather than the expansion that the project started out to achieve).

This paper reviews the Devonian-Lower Mississippian strata of NTS areas 106 and 96 lying within Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) Mackenzie project area and its vicinity. These strata are usually well in excess of 1 km in non-eroded sections, cropping out extensively in the Cordillera and occurring in the subsurface of adjacent Interior Plains. Major tectonostratigraphic assemblages are the latest Silurian-Eifelian platform carbonates and evaporites, the latest Eifelian-Frasnian basinal mudrocks with isolated carbonate banks bundled in the Horn River Group (HRG), and the thick coarsening-upward siliciclastic succession of Frasnian-Tournaisian age deposited in the distal setting of the Ellesmerian foreland basin. A major total petroleum system of the HRG defines the economic prospectivity of Devonian strata. Review of the lithostratigraphic nomenclature is supplemented with highlights on HRG depositional environments, patterns of thermal maturity, disconformities, and sedimentary cycles in platform carbonates.

Abstract:
Extending the previous two years of research results (Mizarch, et al, 2012, Tao, 2011, 2012), the third year’s efforts in both Maryland and Israel were directed towards the engineering of the system. The activities included the robust chick handling and its conveyor system development, optical system improvement, online dynamic motion imaging of chicks, multi-image sequence optimal feather extraction and detection, and pattern recognition. Mechanical System Engineering The third model of the mechanical chick handling system with high-speed imaging system was built as shown in Fig. 1. This system has the improved chick holding cups and motion mechanisms that enable chicks to open wings through the view section. The mechanical system has achieved the speed of 4 chicks per second which exceeds the design specs of 3 chicks per second. In the center of the conveyor, a high-speed camera with UV sensitive optical system, shown in Fig.2, was installed that captures chick images at multiple frames (45 images and system selectable) when the chick passing through the view area. Through intensive discussions and efforts, the PIs of Maryland and ARO have created the protocol of joint hardware and software that uses sequential images of chick in its fall motion to capture opening wings and extract the optimal opening positions. This approached enables the reliable feather feature extraction in dynamic motion and pattern recognition. Improving of Chick Wing Deployment The mechanical system for chick conveying and especially the section that cause chicks to deploy their wings wide open under the fast video camera and the UV light was investigated along the third study year. As a natural behavior, chicks tend to deploy their wings as a mean of balancing their body when a sudden change in the vertical movement was applied. In the latest two years, this was achieved by causing the chicks to move in a free fall, in the earth gravity (g) along short vertical distance. The chicks have always tended to deploy their wing but not always in wide horizontal open situation. Such position is requested in order to get successful image under the video camera. Besides, the cells with checks bumped suddenly at the end of the free falling path. That caused the chicks legs to collapse inside the cells and the image of wing become bluer. For improving the movement and preventing the chick legs from collapsing, a slowing down mechanism was design and tested. This was done by installing of plastic block, that was printed in a predesign variable slope (Fig. 3) at the end of the path of falling cells (Fig.4). The cells are moving down in variable velocity according the block slope and achieve zero velocity at the end of the path. The slop was design in a way that the deacceleration become 0.8g instead the free fall gravity (g) without presence of the block. The tests showed better deployment and wider chick's wing opening as well as better balance along the movement. Design of additional sizes of block slops is under investigation. Slops that create accelerations of 0.7g, 0.9g, and variable accelerations are designed for improving movement path and images.

Abstract:
Denna rapport sammanställer information om projektet Ålen i Fardume träsk, som startade 1980 på Gotland med syftet att undersöka både ekologiska och ekonomiska resultat av ålutsättningar. Då projektet varit igång sedan 1980 har flera aktörer varit inblandade, och data har lagrats i pärmar och digitalt på olika hårddiskar, servrar och databaser genom åren. Syftet med denna rapport är därför att redogöra vad som gjorts inom projektet sedan 1980 fram till idag (2022), för att ge en bakgrund till det arbete som gjorts, vilka studier som publicerats med data från platsen och vilket data som idag finns tillgängligt. Denna syntes är nödvändig för att möjliggöra framtida användning av insamlad data från ålprojektet vid Fardume träsk. Totalt har ca 101 000 ålindivider satts ut i Fardume träsk, 1980 sattes det ut ca 53 000 individer och 1989 sattes det ut ytterligare ca 48 000 individer. Det introducerade ålbeståndets utveckling har sedan följts upp kontinuerligt via en fälla som fångar utvandrande ål från Fardume träsk i Bångån. Fällan har varit drift sedan 1980 och det samlas fortfarande in ål här vilket idag finansieras via SLU Aqua och länsstyrelsen Gotland. Fällan i Bångån har genererat utvandringsdata (antal fångade ålar per år) samt individdata då ål samlats in från fällan för individprovtagning i laboratorium. Totalt har det publicerats åtta vetenskapliga artiklar baserat på data från Fardume träsk, den första publicerades 1986 och den sista 2003. Sedan 2003 har inga vetenskapliga artiklar publicerats med data från Fardume träsk. Otoliter från ål från Fardume träsk har använts för att utveckla och validera åldersläsning av ål då de har en känd ålder (utsatta antingen 1980 eller 1989). Data från Fardume träsk gicks igenom av personal på SLU Aqua under 2020 och 2021 då det fanns flera frågetecken kring datakvalitén och var data lagrades. Sammanställningarna visade att fångstdata från fällan i Bångån behöver ses över och jämföras med fältprotokoll (främst efter 1995) men det går att använda data idag för att säga att det bör ha fångats minst 14 914 individer i fällan under 1980-2022. Individdata finns idag sparade i två separata Excel-filer samt i SLU Aquas databas Sötebasen, dessa filer behöver ses över, kombineras, kontrolleras så att inte samma individ förekommer flera gånger och sedan lagras på en beständig plats innan det kan användas i forskningssyfte. Det finns idag 26 år med data från Fardume träsk som inte använts i någon (för oss) känd vetenskaplig artikel eller rapport. Data från fällan i Bångån skulle kunna användas för att utvärdera hur stor andel av utsättningen som återfångats vilket kan användas för att skatta hur mycket ål som producerats på en känd sjöareal, möjliggöra nya studier gällande utvandringsstorlekar, kondition, tillväxt, parasitering med mera. Individdata skulle kunna användas för att följa tillväxtmönster, överlevnad, könsfördelning, konditionsfaktorer och storleksstrukturen för den ål som vandrat ut från Fardume träsk via Bångån samt för att utvärdera hur länge utsatt ål stannar i ett system efter en utsättning.
