Physicist Gabriel Lippmann’s (1845–1921) photographic process is one of the oldest methods for producing colour photographs. So why do the achievements of this 1908 Nobel laureate remain mostly unknown outside niche circles? Using the centenary of Lippmann’s death as an opportunity to reflect upon his scientific, photographic, and cultural legacy, this book is the first to explore his interferential colour photography. Initially disclosed in 1891, the emergence of this medium is considered here through three shaping forces: science, media, and museums. A group of international scholars reassess Lippmann’s reception in the history of science, where he is most recognised, by going well beyond his endeavours in France and delving into the complexity of his colour photography as a challenge to various historiographies. Moreover, they analyse colour photographs as optical media, thus pluralising Lippmann photography’s ties to art, cultural and imperial history, as well as media archaeology. The contributors also focus on the interferential plate as a material object in need of both preservation and exhibition, one that continues to fascinate contemporary analogue photographers. This volume allows readers to get to know Lippmann, grasp the interdisciplinary complexity of his colourful work, and ultimately expand his place in the history of photography.

Totalitarianism has been an object of extensive communicative research since its heyday: already in the late 1930s, such major cultural figures as George Orwell or Hannah Arendt were busy describing the visual and verbal languages of Stalinism and Nazism. After the war, many fashionable trends in social sciences and humanities (ranging from Begriffsgeschichte and Ego-Documentology to Critical Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis) were called upon to continue this media-centered trend in the face of increasing political determination of the burgeoing field. Nevertheless, the integration of historical, sociological and linguistic knowledge about totalitarian society on a firm factual ground remains the thing of the future. This book is the first step in this direction. By using history and theory of communication as an integrative methodological device, it reaches out to those properties of totalitarian society which appear to be beyond the grasp of specific disciplines. Furthermore, this functional approach allows to extend the analysis of communicative practices commonly associated with fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Soviet Union, to other locations (France, United States of America and Great Britain in the 1930s) or historical contexts (post-Soviet developments in Russia or Kyrgyzstan). This, in turn, leads to the revaluation of the very term »totalitarian«: no longer an ideological label or a stock attribute of historical narration, it gets a life of its own, defining a specific constellation of hierarchies, codes and networks within a given society.

Carburizing and nitriding are covered in much greater depth than the other methods because of their extensive use and the advantages they offer. Chapter 2, “Out of the Head,” in A New Narrative for Psychology argues that psychology’s conceptual problem becomes even more acute when one considers conclusions drawn about the relationship between variables. Interpreting the statistical relationship between two or more variables, researchers commit a serious error; they misinterpret correlations derived from group data as an indication of what must be happening inside persons. Only an approach that allows one to get close enough to persons, to observe how they tell and interpret their experience, can allow one to understand how subjectivity operates. Psychologists need to observe the phenomenon in order to argue that they really know how it works. But observations made in variable-centered research cannot extend to this level of analysis, and researchers must speculate about what must be happening inside persons. Examples from research on personality development and contact theory are examined in order to make this point.

Prostate cancer is a heterogeneous disease that arises through the acquisition of key malignant hallmarks. At the molecular level, prostate tumours are dependent upon the androgen receptor pathway, which affects cell function, growth, and behaviour through downstream androgen-regulated genes. Prostate cancer requires this activity and manipulates the AR pathway to maintain signalling. For example, mutation of the AR (to bind ligands other than androgens) or amplification/duplication of the AR allows signalling to continue in the absence of testosterone. Around 50% of prostate cancers have a gene fusion between the androgen-regulated component of the TMPRSS2 gene and a transcription factor (e.g. ETS family members ERG and ETV1). This results in aberrant androgen stimulated cell growth. Current research is using molecular knowledge to identify biomarkers, such as PCA3, and new therapies, such as enzalutamide or abiraterone acetate.

The representational theory of mind (RTM) has given us the powerful insight that thinking consists of the processing of mental representations. Behaviour is the result of these cognitive processes and makes sense in the light of their contents. There is no widely accepted account of how representations get their content – of the metaphysics of representational content. That question, usually asked about representations at the personal level like beliefs and conscious states, is equally pressing for the subpersonal representations that pervade our best explanatory theories in cognitive science. This book argues that well-understood naturalistic resources can be combined to provide an account of subpersonal representational content. It shows how contents arise in a series of detailed case studies in cognitive science. The account is pluralistic, allowing that content is constituted differently in different cases. Building on insights from previous theories, especially teleosemantics, the accounts combine an appeal to correlational information and structural correspondence with an expanded notion of etiological function, which captures the kinds of stabilizing processes that give rise to content. The accounts support a distinction between descriptive and directive content. They also allow us to see how representational explanation gets its distinctive explanatory purchase.

What kind of tradeoffs do protest movements face in trying to change the world around them? Many scholars have tried to figure out why some social movements have an impact and others do not. By looking inside movements at their component parts and recurrent strategic interactions, we show that they usually produce familiar packages of effects, including both gains and losses. We ask what kinds of tradeoffs and dilemmas these packages reflect, why a certain kind of gain is so often accompanied by a familiar kind of loss. We do this by examining not just the diverse players involved in politics and protest but also the many strategic arenas in which they maneuver. Success in one arena often entails a loss in another. We analyze six diverse cases from around the world: Seattle’s conflict over the $15-an-hour minimum wage; the establishment of participatory budgeting in New York City; a democratic insurgency inside the New York Transport Workers’ Union; a communist party’s struggle to gain votes and also protect citizen housing in Graz, Austria; the internal movement tensions that led to Hong Kong’s umbrella occupation; and Russia’s electoral reform movement embodied in Alexei Navalny. Gains and Losses looks at the details of politics, where individuals make decisions, negotiate with allies and opponents, suffer tradeoffs, and struggle with dilemmas. No social movement gets everything it wants, and some get nothing. In between, most attain complex packages of gains and losses.

The diverse phenotypes exhibited by marine invertebrate larvae are the result of complex gene-environment interactions. Recently, technological advances in molecular biology have enabled large-scale -omics approaches, which can provide a global overview of the molecular mechanisms that shape the larval genotype-phenotype landscape. -omics approaches are facilitating our understanding of larval development and life history evolution, larval response to environmental stress, the larval microbiome, larval physiology and feeding, and larval behavior. These large-scale molecular approaches are even more effective when combined with large-scale environmental monitoring and phenotypic measurements. Current -omics approaches to studying larvae can be improved by the addition of functional genetic analyses and the reporting of natural variation in gene expression between individuals and populations. Systems-level approaches that combine multiple -omics techniques will allow us to explore in fine detail the interactions of environmental and genotypic influences on larval phenotype.

This article explores Presocratic epistemology, arguing that divine revelation is replaced as a warrant for knowledge with naturalistic accounts of how and what we humans can know; thus replacing earlier Greek pessimism about knowledge with a more optimistic outlook that allows for human discovery of the truth. A review of the relevant fragments and testimonia shows that Xenophanes, Alcmaeon, Heraclitus, and Parmenides—even Pythagoras and Empedocles—all moved some distance away from the older “god-oriented” view of knowledge toward a more secular and optimistic outlook. But to get some sense of the dynamics at work in this transition this article begins, as virtually every account of early Greek thought must begin, with Homer and Hesiod.

This chapter explores transnational surrogacy in South Asia. India has become the prime destination for surrogacy for Western couples. It is a quicker and easier legal process than adoption, and it allows the Western parents to raise a child who is genetically similar to one of them. The babies' birth certificates have the commissioning parents' names, with no sign whatsoever of the surrogate mothers' role in the development and birth. In order to take the baby to their home country, the new parents must prove that the child is legally theirs through paternal gene testing. Some parents celebrate their children's Indian roots by way of nicknames or clothing, while others ignore the role of Indian mothers. Although users of transnational surrogacy services are moral pioneers, there is no place for egg donors or surrogate mothers in the nuclear Western family.

Engaging with parents and young children based on risk factors for future mental health problems allows an opportunity to guide the trajectory in a positive direction. When behavioral and emotional problems do emerge, intervening early has a much better chance of helping the child get back on track with social–emotional development before issues become entrenched. Using a case example, this chapter highlights the importance of developing systems within health care and other settings for early identification and treatment of both parental and early childhood mental health problems. Specific strategies for implementation of screening, assessment, and intervention are explored in depth for parents and young children.

Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a rare inherited disorder associated with syncope and sudden death manifesting in the young during sympathetic activation. The electrocardiogram is normal and the heart is structurally normal. The diagnosis is usually made with an exercise stress test that shows a typical pattern of onset and offset of adrenergically induced ventricular arrhythmias. Molecular screening of RyR2, the major CPVT gene, is recommended whenever the suspicion of CPVT is high. If a disease-causing mutation is identified, cascade screening allows pre-symptomatic diagnosis among family members. All affected subjects should be treated with beta blockers (nadolol or propranolol). Preliminary data support the association of beta blockers with flecainide. After a cardiac arrest, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) should be implanted, but it is accompanied by a disquietingly high incidence of adverse effects. After syncope on beta blocker therapy, left cardiac sympathetic denervation is most effective, preserves quality of life, and does not preclude a subsequent ICD implantation.

This chapter examines the search for a pattern of repetitive adaptive substitutions over evolutionary time. In contrast with the previous chapter, only a modest number of tests toward this aim have been proposed. The HKA and McDonald-Kreitman tests contrast the polymorphism to divergence ratio between different genomic classes (such as different genes or silent versus replacement sites within the same gene). These approaches can detect an excess of substitutions, which allows one to estimate the fraction of adaptive sites. This chapter reviews the empirical data on estimates of this fraction and discusses some of the sources of bias it its estimation. Over an even longer time scale, one can contrast the rate of change of sites in a sequence over a phylogeny. These tests require a rather special type of selection, wherein the same specific site (usually a codon) experiences multiple adaptive substitutions over a phylogeny, such as might occur in arms-race genes.

Over the past 5 years, there has been a shift in the approach to searching for a genetic diagnosis in familial ataxic syndromes. Whereas in the past, a limited but expensive search through a selection of commercially available genes using Sanger sequencing was performed, there is now widespread availability of gene panels utilizing next-generation sequencing techniques. This is an efficient and powerful approach that may achieve a diagnosis in more than 30% of patients with a familial ataxia that remain undiagnosed. However, accurate phenotyping remains critical to allow interpretation of sequence variants of uncertain significance, to identify biomarkers that may be useful to monitor future therapies, and to assist with the identification of underlying pathophysiology.

This chapter explores how forms of unseriousness and semi-seriousness enabled the essayist to do some of his most imaginative and provocative thinking. A guiding thought that informs the enquiry is a comment by Stanley Cavell on a particular kind of literary style: ‘a natural effect of reading such writing is to be unsure whether the writer is perfectly serious. I dare say that the writer may himself or herself be unsure, and that this may be a good sign that the writing is doing its work, taking its course.’ The chapter shows how Lamb’s enduring commitment to this idea of the work—and play—allows us to think through style in new ways.

It is essential to understand John’s eschatology as an aspect of the Gospel’s broader concept of time and the way in which this concept is given linguistic expression. The article addresses the following topics: present and future eschatology in recent scholarship; the fusion of temporal horizons in the Farewell Discourses; motifs of time and eschatology, such as ‘the hour’, ‘the last day’, and ‘eternal life’; time and narration in John; and implications for John’s theology and ethics.

This chapter argues that George Eliot too conflated religion with race as a resource for secular individualism, but also that she thought more deeply about what consequences this move held for a major liberal keyword: reading. Eliot’s The Spanish Gypsy (1868) and Daniel Deronda (1876) both stage a character’s recuperation of ethnic inheritance (Gypsy and Jewish, respectively) but only in Deronda does this recuperation successfully yield a many-sided individuality. This is because, as Eliot sees it, Judaism’s scriptural dimension allows one to fashion an idiosyncratic relationship to its racial history. Yet this valorization of scripture as the site at which one can personalize one’s relationship to tradition also runs up against Eliot’s long-standing wariness toward Protestant private interpretation—a fact that Deronda tries to get around by evaluating characters, not according to how well they interpret texts, but by how they relate to books as material metonyms of the past.

Similarly, they followed the model of respectability by striving to socially and culturally uplift la raza. For LULAC, redeeming la raza initially meant focusing on the plight of US-born Mexicans whose claims to citizenship facilitated struggles for rights within the American political and judicial systems. But even as they worked within the nation’s institutions, these ethnic American leaders continued to strategically employ transnational approaches that dovetailed with the hemispheric geopolitics of the 1930s and 1940s.

This chapter explains why as free market democracies grow and support ever more mass flourishing, both the abuse and the neglect problems associated with the cultural commons intensify. As the abuse problem gets harder to recognize, the neglect problem worsens even further. Falling trust opens the door to redistributive and regulatory favoritism which, in turn, actuates political tribalism that is shown to reduce trust in the democratic system. The theory of market failure is shown to produce an important distinction in the proper role of government that helps avoid this downward spiral whereby democracy sows the seeds of its own demise. This has important implications for the emergence of new beliefs that are deleterious to high-trust societies and that allow the proliferation of corruption and points to a civic role for trust-producing moral beliefs.

In some patients, the fibrotic recoil of the parenchymal hepatic tract can be so severe that the basic balloon dilation maneuver fails. The pay it forward off the balloon technique employs the use of a 6 mm × 4-cm balloon, which is placed through the 10 Fr TIPS sheath and advanced over the wire and across the fibrotic tract into the portal vein.

We now know that the onset of the pathological processes leading to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) may be 15–20 years before symptoms appear. This focuses attention on synaptic changes and the early role of tau, and less on the hallmark amyloid plaques (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tau tangles. Sensitive biomarkers to allow early screening will be essential. Familial autosomal AD is the result of mutations in one of three genes (APP, PSEN1, or PSEN2), each directly related to increased Aβ, and informs pathological mechanisms in common sporadic cases, but are also subject to influence by many risk genes and environmental factors. The essential role of apolipoprotein E in neuronal repair and Aβ clearance provides a therapeutic target but also a challenge in carriers of the risk gene APOE4. Current treatments are symptomatic, derived from neurotransmitter deficits seen; particularly cholinergic, but emerging data suggest alternative targets which may prove more productive.

Godolphin, having completed his bargain with the Whigs by getting Orford into the Admiralty, feels himself master of them, but Marlborough contests control of the army with the queen (the Essex regiment crisis) and tries unsuccessfully to use the Whig majority in Parliament to drive Abigail Masham from court. The queen, advised by Harley behind the scenes, is now convinced Marlborough is a threat to her and has turned completely against his wife, though Godolphin retains her confidence.

From a traditional engineering perspective, communication is about effecting control over a distance, and its primary concern is the reliability of transmission. This chapter reviews communication in nature, describing its evolution from the perspective of the selfish gene. Communication in nature is ubiquitous and generally honest, and arises as much from collaboration as manipulation. We show that context and relevance allow effective communication with little information transfer, particularly between organisms with similar capacities and goals. Human language differs fundamentally from the non-verbal communication we share with other animals; robots may need to accommodate both. We document progress in AI capacities to generate synthetic emotion and to sense and classify human emotion. Communication in contemporary biomimetic systems is between robots in swarm robotics, but also between robot and human for both autonomous and collaborative systems. We suggest increased future emphasis on capacities to receive and comprehend signs, and on the pragmatic utility of communication and cooperation.

Technologies available since the 1970s have enabled parents to influence the genetic makeup of their children. As the twenty-first century unfolds, emerging technologies—including gamete selection, gene editing, and in vitro gametogenesis—may allow greater control over heredity. These technologies have been criticized for involving “eugenics.” However, it is often not clear what this criticism amounts to. What is eugenics and/or why it is a bad thing? This chapter provides a conceptual analysis of “eugenics” and discusses its relevance to debates about twenty-first-century reproductive technologies. We argue for the plausibility of a broad definition of eugenics as “an attempt to improve heredity.” Whereas most common usages of reproductive genetic technologies fall under this broad definition, this alone does not entail they are morally problematic. Indeed, there will often be moral reasons to pursue eugenic aims. We conclude by discussing the types of practices that may be justified in the name of eugenics.

The diversity (species richness) of plants and animals is typically highest in the tropics and the strongest environmental correlate of species richness is often climate. The energy for plant production is sunlight, but the rate is governed jointly by temperature and the availability of water (as captured by actual evapotranspiration, AET). Greater production is then linked to higher diversity because larger population size protects against stochastic extinction (the more individuals mechanism). A greater biomass and diversity of plants allows for a greater diversity of herbivores and so on through the food web, though the correlation with climate (AET) gets progressively weaker at higher trophic levels. This is the basis of the species-energy theory of diversity. The Metabolic Theory of Biodiversity posits a mechanistic explanation for higher diversity in warmer places mediated through an enhanced generation of mutations as a by-product of the faster metabolic rate associated with a higher body temperature. Evidence for this is equivocal, and this mechanism cannot explain the strong association between endotherm species richness and climate. The striking differences between the northern and southern hemispheres point to an important role for history, particularly recent glacial history, in influencing current patterns of diversity. We still lack a comprehensive theory of biological diversity, but evidence points to a complex series of factors being important, with the dominant ones being energy and time (history).

Much to her surprise, she made it through the concert without any gaffes. She didn't come in at a wrong place or get lost or lose count or commit any of the terrible errors she feared she might. While it is never easy for a newcomer in an organization to learn the routine under which it operates, for Phillips it was especially difficult. She did not have the luxury of serving under a first-chair player who might tell her how this or that was done or having any natural allies to mentor her. She had to learn most of the ins and outs of being a Philadelphia Orchestra member on her own.

Several key official documents allow us to examine in some detail the public squabble between his daughter Urania Sibly and his partner Charles Wilson Saffell. Urania Sibly’s central role in the Solar Tincture business is additionally interesting because the literature of early modern medicine in Britain so seldom discusses women’s activities either as medical practitioners or independent purveyors of proprietary nostrums. Urania, however, emerges as an active and unique agent—suing for money left her in her father’s will, and when she did not get it, going into the Solar Tincture business herself. She manufactured it from 1803 until shortly before her death in 1878, at age ninety-six.
