Full textSoil construction appears to be a tempting way to restore, lastingly, contaminated urban soils provided that they can become fertile with a functional biodiversity capable of assuring essential ecosystem services. To ensure this, the recolonisation of newly established technosols composed of a mixture of compost and deep alluvion was monitored using judiciously chosen bioindicators: springtails, mites, earthworms, carabid beetles and woodlice. Thus, three experiments were carried out: (i) an experimental plot located inside the future “Ecoquartier de l’Union” (Roubaix, France) (ii) smaller mesocosms with an introduction of earthworms and woodlice and (iii) laboratory microcosms studying the evolution of collembolan populations. The results show that, if the connection of the technosols with an element of the local landscape (in this case a railway hedgerow) plays a part chiefly in aiding the first stages of recolonisation, notably for earthworms and springtails, technosols' management has a lasting impact on the colonization dynamics and the implantation of the different taxa. Establishing an herbaceous cover (flowering meadow, lawn) or a hedge was especially profitable to the pedofaunic communities, which were richer and more abundant, as well as to the technosols functioning (better litter degradation, diversified collembolan communities with regards to functional traits). The same is true for the addition of RCW (Ramial Chipped Wood) which benefits earthworm and mesofauna through the organic components released and the associated fungal development. Therefore, urban planners could use these results in their sustainable rehabilitation projects

Full textThis manuscript presents the results of an interdisciplinary study of wildlife exploitation in Banga, a bofi forest village of 300 persons in Central African Republic. In the first part of this work, operating modes and worldviews of the four main local stakeholders of wildlife management are confronted: the Central African State, the local peoples (Pygmies and Bantus), a forester and a conservation-development project. This analysis shows marked differences between actors in terms of internal organization, influence networks, means available, knowledge of the resource and its exploitations, values, goals, strategies and vision of the future. Basically, there is a major conceptual divide between local people and the others stakeholders. The second part of this work summarizes the methods developed by the Conservation Biology to assess the sustainability of wildlife harvesting, applying them to our study site. We distinguished sustainability indices that can be classified as empirical or theoretical, and site-specific modeling exercises. This review identifies many approximations, uncertainties, questionable assumptions and errors that limit the relevance of sustainability indices. Furthermore, our analysis shows that these methods carry implicit values (environmentalism, fixism and neo-liberalism) that influence their results. Thus, the third part of this thesis proposes a synthesis of the wildlife management problem in Banga using the Panarchy framework, which gives a new definition of sustainability, of the role of science and of the practice of interdisciplinarity for complex problems solving. Four scenarios of prospective change and action are constructed, which clarify the values they promote, the beneficiaries of the actions engaged, the probability of success and their expected results

Full textIn the French South Alps, diminutions of effectives of chamois were recently reported. Besides, pestivirus were shown to cause high mortalities in Pyrenean chamois. While clinical signs associated were characterized in wild populations, the pathogeny in pregnant female has not been studied yet. Moreover, interspecies transmissions were recently incriminated in the epidemiology of pestivirus infections, especially in alpine pastures, known for their height rate contact between wild and domestic ruminants. The objectives of this doctorate were, in a first time, to study the pathogeny on pregnancy associated to the pestivirus infection in Pyrenen chamius. Then, this survey was aimed to study the infection epidemiology in various area of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region, firstly in wild ruminants and at the interface between wild and domestic ruminants sharing the same pastures. Results of this work shown that an active circulation of pestivirus is present in the PACA region, in both wild and domestic ruminants. In the Alpes de Haute-Provence district, isolated pestiviral strains from chamois ans sheep clustered in the same genogroup, showing a geographical continuity in the strains repartition. Results obtained from the experimental infection showed important effects on the pregnancy, with a possible birth of PI animal in chamois and sheep. Our results showed that two epidemiological cycles are present in chamois and sheep, respectively, characterized by an important circulation intra-species and connected by punctual transmission between animal species

Full textThis dissertation presents results of the research carried out from 1986 to 1990 in a part of the pendjari faunistic reserve, in northen benin, a region representative of the protected areas of the soudanien belt of west africa. The savanna, caracteristic biome of this biogeographical zone, was studied in two aspects : 1) plant ecology and 2) range management. In the first, we sought to identify the major ecological group in the study area, conceived with relative precision. The instability of these units is primarily due to factors related to large ungulates and other wildlife comp onents. Therefore we propose that intensified conservation and monitoring efforts be undertaken. In the second domain, the objective was to test a method for calculating the carrying capacity of rangeland used by wild life. For this purpose, a formula was used to establish the relationship between pastoral value (vp) and the ecological sustainable stocking rate. This procedure was validated with a non-parametric test (probability of risk < 5%) cen hence forth be employed in the pendjari reserve. This study thus sought to fill one of the important gaps in tropical range management which arises from an inadequate consideration of the phytoecological evaluation of the carrying capacity of these areas. An additional part of the study dealt with the functional ecology of the rangelands in this area under grazing pressure from three wild ungulates, syncerus caffer, hippotragus equinus and kobus kob. The diets of these three animals were monitored from 1988 to 1990, and the causes of their alimentary choices was studied along with edaphic constraints on pasture development. Finally, propositions were made for modifying the range management practises currently used in west africa
