Abstract:
The thesis specifies how Franz Brentano inspired some of his students and how those students, in their turn, influenced the next generation of psychologists. After outlining the essentials of Aristotle's psychology, the thesis explains some general positions that Brentano borrowed from Aristotle. It goes on to relate Brentano's concepts of 'presentation,' 'unity of consciousness,' and 'difference between the mental and physical,' as well as his call for a 'science of the mind' to ideas of Christian von Ehrenfels, Carl Stumpf and Alexius Meinong.
Ehrenfels thought that a mental element, which he named gestalt quality, explains why a string of presentations has a certain form. The thesis then looks at a book of Edgar Rubin, even though Rubin was not a student of Brentano. His experiments that demonstrated the figure-ground phenomenon, however, were well known to the Berlin gestalt school. My analysis of Ehrenfels also sheds light on Rubin's theory, a theory that the Berlin gestalt school seemed to have overlooked, perhaps because Rubin's findings fit so well into their own notions.
Stumpf developed his theory of how presentations form a unity partly in rejection of Aristotle's notion of substance. His theory grounds his criticism of associationism. Stumpf's students, however, would not accept his dualistic view, but they would benefit from the experimental methods that he developed and taught them. Stumpf adapted his theory in response to his students' work, and that version formed the basis of his objections against their explanations.
Meinong's theory of how presentations are united was inspired by the Scholastics, and his students would render it into a psychological format. It is as a review of that latter work that the Berlin gestalt school presented its gestalt notion for the first time in mature form.
The conclusion very briefly reiterates Brentano's influence. It also contains some general observations regarding the diversity among the gestalt notions, the wide scope of the gestalt authors, and their zeal for the pursuit of pure scientific knowledge.

Gestalt Therapy is a motion of psychotherapeutic intervention which regards itself fundamented in a gestaltic reading of the freudian metapsychology on one hand , and a phenomenological interpretation of Gestalt Psychology on the other. Perls, Gestalt's chief mentor, referred to these fundaments as a sort of "Gestalt philosophy" somewhat developed in the work "Gestalt Therapy" , 1951, with collaborators Paul Goodman and Ralph Hefferline. This dissertation is aimed at axamining such philosophy which, in the first place, implies in an investigation of the genesis of the concepts it holds, as well as the way these concepts are chiefly articulated in that work terms. The first chapter is a survey on the origin of the psychological application of the notion of "Gestalt", which brings us the way "Gestalt philosophy" - in its first generation - reads and applies a husserlian notion of transcendent intentional object. The second chapter is Husserl's view of such applications, which he consideres to be "naturalizing", as well as his proposal of reduction of phenomenology in the transcendental philosophy environment, demonstrating which way - due to this reduction - the second generation of Gestalt Psychology begins to apply the notion of "gestalt" less as a fixed structure and more as a self-regulating field. We also discuss which way this field notion comes out in the theory which most directly contributed to the construction of the " Gestalt philosophy", that is, Goldstein's organismic theory. On the third chapter we comment how - out of Goldstein's organismic theory - Perls proposes a new gestaltic reading of Freud's metapsychology, and in what sense this new reading demands a philosophical investigation as for the goldsteinian notion of organismic intentionality. It is presented on the fourth chapter the phenomenological invesgigation which Perls and Goldstein make of the notion of organismic intentionality. On the fifth and last chapter we, finaly, describe the outcome of this investigation, which is the theory of the self, most important piece of "Gestalt philosophy" announced by Perls.

Abstract:
Gestalt therapy has been concerned about social and political issues from its very beginning. Although Gestalt therapy theory considers the relationship between the person and their environment, that environment is often reduced in individual and group therapy to early development within clients’ family or relational one to one dynamics. Yet our personal embodied experiences are never separated from the social, political and material context. Grounded in contemporary materialistic philosophy this research study interweaves the social, the material, the professional and the personal. It describes and analyses the personal journey of becoming a Gestalt therapist in Poland and England, through analyses of masculinity, sexuality, relationality and culture. The autophenomenographic method employed enables the embodied personal experiences of the author to be studied as a gateway to the most significant personal, historical and societal events that enable its creation and maintain its shape. Although this study is predominantly based on an understanding of embodied experiences produced through autobiographical writing, other methods are used such as interviews with the researcher’s mother and sister, a reflective journal, drawings, a family diagram and photographs. Each of these methods was selected to enhance the awareness of the meeting points between the researcher’s body and different cultures. Embodiment is also central to the design and implementation of this study. It informs the data analysis, starting with phenomenological attention to embodied sensations that are considered dialogical and culturally embedded, and ending with the production of the research body that is personal and vulnerable yet informative. Furthermore, embodiment is at the centre of the ethics of this study, with detailed embodied attention guiding the researcher through ethical considerations to maintain the dignity and safety of each research participant. The focus on embodiment guarantees that every part of the research is produced in the emerging relationship between the researcher and the environment that includes the diversity of academic and gestalt cultures. This thesis advocates for a more collective understanding of embodied sensations emerging in the therapeutic context as collective gestalts. Special consideration is given to Gestalt therapy cultures where practitioners are encouraged to explore their collective gestalts and bring their own collective vulnerability to the consulting rooms. Collective gestalts can be explored in various context and large groups are discussed as an environment that provide suitable challenge for this exploration. A proposition is made to expose psychotherapists’ vulnerability to collective gestalts in support of the dialogue that can bring about social and political change through individual, group and large group therapy.

Our desire to have common experiences with other people leads us to share media such as photographs and music. With computer networks as the media delivery system we create new opportunities for recording media utilization and ownership. Using traditional and responsive media we explore systems that enable enhanced shared experiences through modeling groups of users. A series of prototypes built with an experimental framework, MediaConnector, help us document observations and behaviors of participants. MediaConnector is a peer-to-peer media-sharing framework that allows people to develop new peer-to-peer media sharing application. Through engendering each node with its own historical audit trail we can take a crawler approach and dynamically build group profiles and perform trend analysis. Theoretical and practical work that leads to the final framework design is discussed. In particular experiments with GPS enabled cameras that explore metadata interrelationships, networked tables to share photos and two construction tests of the MediaConnector framework in dynamic group level personalization of television and audio content. It is intended that a "constructionist" approach together with new behavioral analysis will foster new and novel sharing applications to emerge. MediaConnector is evaluated by its ability to support the above approach in a community of users.

Abstract:
This paper researches on the possible reasons which made the Gestalt-therapy show a fragile approach image, with no theoretical basis, and therefore easier to be dealt with since it wouldnt demand a deep knowledge from the professional Gestalt-therapist. The author, here defining herself as heiress to this approach, rescues the Gestalt-therapys origin and concepts pointing out to the importance of its founders, Fritz and Laura Perls . She considers their beliefs, myths and personal values as well as their direct or indirect influence on the Gestalt-therapys destiny. This study, wich focus on the Gestalt-therapy very beginning, aims to clearly understand the social-cultural aspect and its demands, with the purpose of analysing the Gestalt-therapy and its concepts in a much broader context that makes it meaningful. This research is made up of interviews with three current Brazilian Gestalttherapists, who are also considered heirs, hence this autors brothers. The main goal for interviewing those therapists was not only to analyse their individual comprehension about Gestalt-therapy itself as theory but also to have their own opinion about the possible causes for todays superficial approach of this therapy. This study highlits that a Gestalt-therapist needs theoretical and practical pillars that reveal and consider not only the influence undertaken by such a light Gestalttherapy approach but also that clarifies the concepts which this therapy makes use of. It is still paramount that one distinguishes between what Gestalt-therapy actually is from something that merely makes up its fathers (Fritz Perls) way of being

O'Regan, Patrick. "Positioning Gestalt Professional Education in the Changing Cultural Context: The Experiences of Providers." Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/403242.

Abstract:
Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy founded in the early 1950s as an approach to enhancing the health of its clients within a supportive therapeutic relationship by enhancing their self-awareness, choice, and spontaneity. The provision of Gestalt professional education for Gestalt therapy practitioners is closely linked with the beginnings of Gestalt therapy. It mainly occurs in private training institutes. Gestalt professional education providers are under pressure to respond to the demands of a changing cultural context such as through the provision of credentials endorsed by national regulatory authorities. However, only limited empirical research has been conducted on that situation. The goal of this research project, then, was to explore the key understandings, dilemmas, experiences, and decisions of major players within Gestalt professional education institutes in relation to what they saw as the demands of the contemporary cultural context. Three research questions were formulated to address that goal: (1) What are the understandings and experiences of the directors, academic staff, and students of Gestalt professional education institutes regarding the issues arising in their institutes from the contemporary cultural context? (2) What are the understandings, choices, and directions informing their programs in response to those issues? and (3) How are the institutes responding to the issues? A qualitative multiple case study methodology was employed involving five institutes from Australia and New Zealand. Three sources of data were used to build each case: qualitative individual interviews; focus group discussions; and formal and informal documents. Participants were the institute directors, a selection of academic staff, and a selection of students. A peer-reviewed article has been published as part of the PhD project (O’Regan, Bagnall & Hodge, 2017). That article identified three common modes of Gestalt professional education in Australia and New Zealand. This study refined these modes as non- accredited, professionally accredited, and higher education. Following an interpretive and reflective analysis of the data, seven dimensions were constructed to articulate a cohesive response to the research questions: (1) philosophical integrity, as the extent to which the given mode was seen as either facilitating or inhibiting an institute’s ability to conform to the underlying philosophy of Gestalt therapy; (2) curricular quality, as the extent to which the mode was seen as influencing the rigour and quality of an institute’s curriculum; (3) institutional autonomy, as the extent to which the given mode was seen as either facilitating or inhibiting an institute’s ability to make decisions freely and without external restraints; (4) compliance costs, as the extent to which an institute was seen as being required to expend resources in order to join or stay within the given mode; (5) student access, as the extent to which the mode was seen as promoting a diverse student population within an institute; (6) institutional sustainability, as the extent to which the mode was seen as enhancing the ongoing financial security of an institute; and (7) graduate marketability, as the extent to which graduates from the given mode were seen as being attractive in their professional field. The study revealed that relevant stakeholders were faced with ambiguous and paradoxical demands in maintaining the integrity, rigour, and sustainability of their institutes. The major tensions centred on how institutes managed the threats to their sustainability while staying true to the philosophical underpinnings of Gestalt therapy. It was found that the mode of Gestalt professional education reflected how the institutes responded to the tensions inherent within each dimension. Each modal position presented advantages and disadvantages in managing those tensions. The study further highlighted the point that those within higher education risked their philosophical integrity by engaging in the performative and instrumental practices required by the regulators. Those institutes in the non-accredited mode (and to a lesser extent the professionally accredited mode), while complying with the existential and humanistic strivings of Gestalt, presented barriers for potential students from low socioeconomic backgrounds to join their institutes, aligned to the institutes’ user-pays model. The research makes a unique scholarly contribution to the field, both in its substantive findings and in the modal and dimensional frameworks developed in the study. The substantive findings are expected to inform providers of Gestalt professional education in their reflections and deliberations on their own experiences, the options that they face, and the choices that they make. The modal and dimensional frameworks may serve as a model for future research into the field. The issues identified and examined in this project may have interest and value also for those from cognate educational settings.

This work concernes the relationships between Gestalt Therapy and Psychoanalysis, wich is one of the most important sources presented in the body of influences that originated its formation. Taking into account the return of great part of contemporary Gestalt Therapy to the psychoanalytic frame of reference, that relationship is posed as a central question. The integration field, presented here, is articulated around the question of language in Gestalt Therapy and the question of proximity between the poetic discourse, and the discourse produced in the therapeutic process. In order to better deal with this theme methodological instruments are presented. They characterize either the therapeutic action in the Gestalt Therapy as well as the methodological procedure wich constitute the psychoanalytic doctrine and technique

Abstract:

The Gestalt Theory, which foundations are erected by the ideas of Köhler, Koffka and Wertheimer, has as main purpose the reestablishment of the bond between science and life. The notion of Gestalt, thought as an entity that has meaning and value as intrinsic characteristics, is the key of this enterprise. Starting from the phenomenological thesis , the defense that the conceptual understanding demands going back to the data of the direct experience, the gestaltists find in their basic category the possibility of a conception of nature that surpasses the consequences of the materialism, that is, the reduction of the most important features of the human mind to mere subjective illusion. The presence of significant configurations in the early perceptive processes, in thought and in the theoretical entities of physical science, will support the proposal of a Science that, when exceeding the life world, will not discard its more important characteristics, that is, its intelligible relations, based in the intrinsic characteristics of the parts of a totality. At the same time, however, the gestaltists defend a dualism between the phenomenal world, known directly, and the transphenomenal world, which is known only indirectly - it's constructed in the interaction between the scientific theory and the facts collected by the experiments. This dualism results in the "naturalism" in the Gestalt Theory, of which the isomorphism hypothesis is the better expression. Such naturalism is the main target of the critics from the philosophical phenomenology (Husserl and Merleau-Ponty). We are to show that the defense of the physical world as an reality appart from the consciousness corresponds to an assumption supported by the direct experience, as is demanded by the phenomenological thesis. In the transphenomenal transcendence experience", we find the transphenomenal term as condition of meaning of the phenomenal term, therefore, the phenomenological argument that would give meaning to transphenomenality . We can point as contributions of our research the understanding of the epistemological dualism of Gestalt Theory, as well as the survey of questions directed to the phenomenological philosophy.

This dissertation examines the potential of application of Gestalt Psychology Principles in the planning of compositional structures in the work Segmentos, for symphony orchestra. The Gestalt analysis of musical works accomplished by several autors, such as Meyer (1956), Lerdahl and Jackendoff (1983), and Tenney and Polansky (1980), was used in this dissertation on a prescriptive fashion. The analogies between musical gestures and features of visual objects perception, according to Gestalt Theory, was thought by these autors. In this dissertation, these analogies were counted as musical suggestions to the planning of the work Segmentos, which consists of three movements. For the planning of the musical gestures in the first movement, titled Hábito, and the third movement, titled Pregnância, subjective or qualitative suggestions were employed, i.e., without using mathematical calculations. For the planning of the musical gestures in the second movement, titled Tenere, objective or quantitative suggestions were employed, besides subjective or qualitative suggestions. For this Second movement, a computer software was created in order to generate and segment melodies, according to works of Tenney and Polansky, who applied by calculations the Gestalt principles related with grouping and segregation of perceptual objects. These melodic segments were substantial for the management of musical parameters. It is our intention that this dissertation, which apply some Gestalt principles in the context of musical composition, shall serve as a basis for the conscious planning of musical works and shall be a reference for research in such a way that one can carry out the examination of other applications of Gestalt principles in the planning of musical works.

Abstract:
Digital technology and the Internet has fundamentally reshaped the way photographs are viewed and shared. Today designers can reach out and publish their work via web sites and blogs without having to rely on editorial features or even the objects being in production. Most people will only see the finished products on blogs or in magazines, and it is almost as though the image is more important than the real object. How does this change the role of the image in the field of product design and what new demands does it put on product photography? Through theoretical and applied research, the aim is to identify knowledge, relevant in order to approach the creation of images as an integrated part of the design process, rather then a form of documentation done after a project is completed.

Abstract:
The theory of Gestalt was proposed in the nineteenth century to explain and predict the way that people perceptually group visual elements, and it has been used to develop guidelines for designing visual computer interfaces. In this thesis we seek to extend the use of Gestalt principles to the design of haptic and visual-haptic displays. The thesis begins with a survey of Gestalt research into visual, auditory and haptic perception. From this survey the five most commonly found principles are identified as figure-ground, continuation, closure, similarity and proximity. This thesis examines the proposition that these five principles can be applied to the design of haptic interfaces. Four experiments investigate whether Gestalt principles of figure-ground, continuation, closure, similarity and proximity are applicable in the same way when people group elements either through their visual (by colour) or haptic (by texture) sense. The results indicate significant correspondence between visual and haptic grouping. A set of haptic design guidelines for haptic displays are developed from the experiments. This allows us to use the Gestalt principles to organise a Gestalt-Taxonomy of specific guidelines for designing haptic displays. The Gestalt-Taxonomy has been used to develop new haptic design guidelines for information displays.

Perez, Carrasco Andres. "Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Painting, Gestalt, and Reversibility." Thesis, Boston College, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/3715.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: John Sallis
Maurice Merleau-Ponty's last essay about art, Eye and Mind, refers to many painters, to painting, and even to sculpture. Yet there is hardly any use of the traditional categories used in art criticism to categorize artistic movements or to evaluate painters' contributions to their period. Instead, he uses terms such as `body' and `flesh' that are alien to that tradition, thereby indicating that he clearly intends to go beyond commenting on and assessing the artistic value of the works he mentions. Instead, the essay is a reevaluation of meaning of painting as a whole. Merleau-Ponty says that all painting from Lascaux to our day has been a celebration of `the visible.' However, to understand what he means by `the visible' involves considerable complexity. The standard by which Merleau-Ponty evaluates painting emerges from his phenomenological and ontological research into perception. I argue that in fact Eye and Mind answers a question that arose in his first major book concerning the relationship between consciousness and nature. Because the evolution of the ideas underlying the Eye and Mind's answer is so vast, the goal of this dissertation is to trace the thread leading from his earlier work in order to provide a unifying viewpoint that will ground an adequate understanding of the essay's various arguments. The dissertation argues that Merleau-Ponty's notion of the Gestalt or structure is the framework for understanding the origin and depth of the aperçus developed in Eye and Mind. Ironically perhaps, this notion is not mentioned in Eye and Mind. As if it had lost its original meaning, it is only referred to indirectly and vaguely in terms of transcendence. Nevertheless, the main issue settled in The Structure of Behavior dominated his understanding of the body in The Phenomenology of Perception, and underwent a transformation when Merleau-Ponty discovered language as a diacritical structure. This made possible the radical use he made of it in Eye and Mind without expressly mentioning it. Once the interpretation of Gestalt in relation to Paul Klee and Rudolf Arnheim had been worked out, this dissertation could use this notion--usually undervalued in Merleau-Ponty scholarship--to make sense of Eye and Mind's main contention in light of the interpretive reconstruction of the notions of expression, reversibility, body, and flesh Merleau-Ponty elaborated on the way to that essay. Part I of the dissertation deals with the phenomenology of the Gestalt structure prior to Merleau-Ponty's ontological turn, which in turn frames and underpins many of the insights achieved in this pre-ontological period, especially those about the body. The first two chapters introduce the notion of structure as it emerges in its application to behavior, and explain Merleau-Ponty's own contribution to the notion through the overcoming of earlier psychologists' static reduction of the notion to the physical level. The third and last chapter of Part I discusses the structural dimension of the body. There are two extraordinary things in Eye and Mind: the first is Paul Valery's statement that the painter "takes his body with him"; and the second is the analogy between the problems of the body and the problems of painting, by which Merleau-Ponty proposes that understanding one is indispensable for understanding the other. To clarify his proposal we have to return to The Phenomenology of Perception's analysis of the body according to embodied intentionality or motor intentionality, in which the body operates according to an "I can" that must replace the mechanical reaction to a stimulus. Here Merleau-Ponty was helped by Kurt Goldstein's insight into the body as a Gestalt. The dissertation illustrates what this could mean for the structure of a painting by using examples. What was formerly Part II profiles Merleau-Ponty's embodied notion of the Gestalt form against Arnheim's aprioristic account, which explains the relationship between consciousness and nature through an isomorphism that is even more ambitiously totalizing than the ones envisioned by the original Gestalt psychologists. Because of the detailed nature of our account this part is in two appendices. What is now Part II focuses on the problem of painting more directly. Using both the Notes de Cours (where Merleau-Ponty's most extensive comments on Paul Klee occur) and Paul Klee's own celebrated Notes, Chapter Four on Paul Klee reconsiders the relationship between consciousness and nature as the one between the painter and the world. Klee interpreted abstraction in terms of Gestalt as a form of transcendence involving the visible and the invisible, in contrast to Sartre's idea of transcendence, which also employs the figure/ground formation of the Gestalt. In Eye and Mind the expression of painting is interpreted as "a `visible' to the second power, a carnal essence or icon of the first." So Chapters Five and Six discuss the notion of structure from the viewpoint of expression. The doubling of expression in painting is seen first as analogous to philosophy as a hyper-reflection, and then in the linguistic distinction between le langage parlé et le langage parlant, which allowed Merleau-Ponty to interpret and generalize the model of expressive language via the diacritical structure of language and not restrict expressive language to bodily gestures. Rather than a return to the original (as The Phenomenology may have suggested), the point of this doubling aspect of expression is the recognition of the qualities of reversibility and difference that constitute `depth.' With the clarification of terms such as `perceptual faith' and `style,' Chapter Seven introduces the notion of reversibility before exploring its meaning, specifically in the second chapter of Eye and Mind. In Chapter Eight the earlier focus on the beginning of the definition of a painting as "a `visible' to the second power, a carnal essence or icon of the first," shifts to the meaning of the term "icon." This rounds off the meaning of `depth' and completes the exploration of the theme of the Gestalt structure. Now it becomes clear that the meaning of `depth' is articulated as the depth between the visible and the invisible, because the model used to understand depth is the by now very familiar basic articulation of the perceptual Gestalt: the articulation of a figure over a ground. Like a stain on a rug--in painting, in history, in philosophy, in language, or in perceptual faith--the crystallization of what appears always disguises an invisible dimension, whose invisibility is what makes the visibility of the visible possible. Chapter Nine then concludes the dissertation. It first considers Jean-Luc Marion's use of the icon in painting, in which, as in our interpretation of Merleau-Ponty on depth, uses his own idea of the depth between the visible and the invisible; and second, it responds to observations on Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of art by Veronique Fotí and criticisms of it by Michel Haar

The objective of this work is an epistemological reflection on Gestalt-therapy philosophícal basis, trying to associate it with its techniques and therapeutic procedures. Gestalt-therapy is shown from its origin, including a biography of Fritz Perls, where the influence of other approaches in his mind is evinced. The philosophic presuppositions are highlighted trying to relate some central concepts of phenomology and existencialism with Gestalt-therapy. A brief introduction on the basic theoretical pressuppositions was inserted, to help a better understanding of the approach as a whole. The therapeutic attitude is investigated supported on man's vision revealed in the philosophic essentials. It finishes whith some critical considerations on Gestalt-therapy. This analysis leads to the following inferences which refer to the therapeutic line focused. Philosophically it is based on man's existencialist vision which appraised existence, subjectivity and singularity, letting pain, anguish and suffering emerge. It ascertains that there is no human nature. Man is an interrelational being and his innermost essence is mistery. Human being only reveals himself in freedom; he is responsible for his choices. The therapeutic attitude adopted is phenomenologic¬ existential. The therapeutic situation phenomena are seen free from any 'a priori'. The therapist keeps up with the client's conscience flow trying to understand what is being unveiled to him and enthrall its meaning.
- A atitude terapêutica adotada fenomenológica existencial.

Abstract:
Inspectant different psychological theories and practices, the gestalt therapy made on useful psychotherapeutic system to resolve any crisis of personalization or existentials. She was founded on the assimilation of many approachs ( philosophical, psychological, in fact religious too ). And that was how different generations of gestalt therapists has been dwelled on different aspects ( the self, the contact, or the self perturbations. ). However that may be one reach a consistent theory that ratify the psychotherapeutic practice as its interventions. Abstract:
This thesis is about the relationship between human bodies and instrumental technologies that can be use to measure them. It adopts the position that instruments are technological structures that evoke and manifest particular phenomena of embodied life. However, through their history of association and use in the sciences and scientific medicine, instruments tend to be attached to a particular ontology, that of mechanical objectivity. Embarking from research into the artistic uses of physiological sensor technology in creative practices such as performance and installation art, this thesis asks whether it is possible to use instruments in a way that departs from their association with scientific objectivity. Drawing on philosophers who have developed an understanding of the relationship of instrumental technologies and human bodies as co-constructive, it explores how this model of con-construction might be understood to offer an alternative ontology for understanding the use of instruments in practices outside of science and scientific medicine. The project is therefore suggestive of degrees of freedom and flexibility that are open to exploitation by creative practices in the realm of instrumentation as an alternative to orthodox rationalisations of the value of scientific equipment as authentic, revealing and objective. The major contribution of the thesis is that transfers and synthesises arguments and evidence from the history and philosophy of sciences that serve to demonstrate how the instrumental measurement of human bodies can be considered to be a form of creative practice. It assembles a position based on the work of thinkers from a number of disciplines, particularly philosophy of science, technology, and the medical humanities. These offer examples of ontological frameworks within which the difference between the realm of the instrumental, material, biological, and the objective, and the phenomenal, meaningful and subjective, might be collapsed. Doing this, the thesis sheds light on how physical devices might enter into the interplay of making, mattering and objectifying the immaterial, a realm that it might be considered the role of artists to manifest. Drawing on contemporary, and secondary, accounts of the development of empirical testing in the medical sciences, the thesis agues for the recovery of a romantic account of human physiology, in which the imagination and meaning are active and embodied. It therefore offers to link the bodily and the instrumental through an extended-materialist account in which the physiological, rather than the psychological, is central. Developing a response to constructionist models of the body and instrumentation, the thesis concludes that a model of the poetic may be adopted as a method for understanding the opportunities and imperatives inherent in the avoidance of deterministic approaches to biosignalling technologies. In doing this, the thesis contributes particularly to the creative arts and technology research practices concerned with the use of body sensor technologies in humanistic applications. It complements the existing works by artists in this area that make use of instruments by assembling a number of theoretical readings and interpretations of how instruments work – among them the thermometer, lie detector, and automatograph – which illustrate the argument that that is possible to operate from a theoretical position within which instruments are both material, performative and symbolic.

Abstract:
Groups and group work are designed to address the problems of living in our contemporary society (Trotzer, 1999). In groups people work together, communicate, clarify different problems, make decisions and relates to conflicts. There is an interaction between the individual, the group and the group leader. It can be an effective arena for reflection upon self-behavior, interpersonal learning, interdependence and belonging. Learning groups can be described as relational systems which gives the possibility for renewal of the individual identity, meeting with, and in relation to the other group participants (Kvalsund og Mayer, 2005).Working together in groups, many complex, relational issues come into play. Self-awareness, self- insight, myself as a group member and tolerance for individual differences, are important areas.Meeting in the phenological field, relational learning (Allgood og Kvalsund, 2005) and to be person-in-relation (Macmurrey,1961) are central concepts. As participants in working life we are challenged in many ways, competence, efficiency, quality and ability to make right decisions. The number of people being sick and not able to work are increasing. Different steps are taken to reduce the number of people on sick leave. Betania Malvik, and the project Raskere tilbake is initiated by Helse Midt-Norge, and offers different treatments, ex. participating in different kind of groups. They are achieving good results, 70% back in work. This rapport has a qualitative, phenomenological approach, focusing on the stories told by the participants. The research question: How can participation in a reflection group help people to get back to the working life in a more effective way? The main categories are: The experience of being on sick leave The group and the group process Relational learning New insight and personal growth
Funnene deles inn i fire hovedpunkt.

The advances in the treatment in mental health are great and promising, aiming at the humanization of the reception and treatment of the psychic suffering. In Brazil and in the world, health professionals who dedicate themselves to this intervention are forced to insert respect and love for the human in their daily professional practice. However, even though they directed efforts in this direction, that of accompanying human suffering, historically underlay the imprecision about what would, in fact, be the 'disease' that was being treated from the diagnosis of 'psychosis'. Thousands of people with various psychic sufferings, in addition to stigma, were hospitalized or excluded, if not subjected to dehumanizing and alienating treatments. In order to try to minimize the impact of the "preconceptions" introduced by classical psychiatry, the term to be used in this study, "severe psychic distress", is a construct that will give us the freedom to discuss intense crises of "normal" or " psychotic ', dealing with what is inherent in the human: the crisis. Traditionally, Gestalt therapy is associated with therapeutic practice grounded in the ethics of care, which includes unreserved delivery of the therapist in relation to the patient. Having been originally inspired by the philosophies of Humanism, Existentialism, Dialogical Existentialism and Phenomenology, this clinical practice has taken shape with studies carried out by Gestalt Psychology, Field Theory, Organismic Theory and Holism. From the origin to the present, Gestalt therapy has shown itself to be dynamic and active in the understanding and care of the human from its various angles, thus showing itself capable of realizing healthy and expansive creative adjustments in the ascending evolutionary direction. Although the clinical practice based on Gestalt therapy is widespread, we need greater academic and theoretical production that assures contributions to the scientific community, allowing greater access to knowledge on the part of gestalt therapists and patients. This is the pertinence of a study that brings to the fore the theoretical and practical constructs of Gestalt therapy - as imagined by its early authors and developed by its precursors - associated with the reception and care required when the manifestation of the phenomenon of severe psychic suffering occurs. Understanding also how Gestalt-therapy elaborates the phenomenon of psychosis in its theoretical and practical context. Thus, this theoretical-clinical work - predominantly theoretical - has the objective of approaching the concepts of acceptance and care with severe psychic suffering, analyzing the symptoms in a critical way as much as possible, potentializing the study of the course and progress of this area of knowledge , besides illustrating with vignettes of clinical cases, interventions and therapeutic actions performed within the context of research of the Early Intervention Group in the First Crises of Psychotic Type (GIPSI).

We present a computational model that connects gestalt visual perception and language. The model grounds the meaning of natural language words and phrases in terms of the perceptual properties of visually salient groups. We focus on the semantics of a class of words that we call conceptual aggregates e.g., pair, group, stuff, which inherently refer to groups of objects. The model provides an explanation for how the semantics of these natural language terms interact with gestalt processes in order to connect referring expressions to visual groups. Our computational model can be divided into two stages. The first stage performs grouping on visual scenes. It takes a visual scene segmented into block objects as input, and creates a space of possible salient groups arising from the scene. This stage also assigns a saliency score to each group. In the second stage, visual grounding, the space of salient groups, which is the output of the previous stage, is taken as input along with a linguistic scene description. The visual grounding stage comes up with the best match between a linguistic description and a set of objects. Parameters of the model are trained on the basis of observed data from a linguistic description and visual selection task. The proposed model has been implemented in the form of a program that takes as input a synthetic visual scene and linguistic description, and as output identifies likely groups of objects within the scene that correspond to the description. We present an evaluation of the performance of the model on a visual referent identification task. This model may be applied in natural language understanding and generation systems that utilize visual context such as scene description systems for the visually impaired and functionally illiterate.

Computer aided design has become affordable and ubiquitous, in part as a result of the development of open source design software and web-based 3D modeling tools. Consequently, a broad spectrum of individuals are expressing demand for access to digital fabrication tools that are capable of automatically rendering their computer-based designs into physical objects. In response, manufacturers have begun to produce low-cost versions of a limited set of automated, personal-use fabrication tools, including 3D printers and desktop milling machines. Simultaneously, groups of individuals and organizations are establishing community workshops where resources can be pooled to acquire industrial-grade machinery. Both of these approaches have been successful at increasing the penetration of digital fabrication capabilities into the general population. However, there are many industrial tools which currently have no consumer-centric equivalent, and for which demand is insufficient to warrant acquisition by a community workshop. Additionally, as digital design continues to find new applications among a larger and more diverse audience, new needs will likely arise for yet non-existent automated fabrication tools. Gestalt is an accessible and flexible control framework which aims to augment the ability of individuals to create new automated tools, and to thus self-extend their abilities to create objects which would be too tedious or impossible to create by hand. This work will enable individuals to rapidly construct controllers and rich user interfaces for automated personal fabrication tools. The approach taken is that of a software-based virtual machine controlling a physical machine. This allows for increased modularity in controller implementation, and tighter integration of the tool with user applications than is possible with traditional controller architectures. The foundation of the proposed system provides a means for building APIs to communicate with modular hardware components, and a method of combining the functionality of these components at the virtual machine level (rather than in hardware) to yield higher-level functionality. The Python library developed in this work enables the rapid construction of cross-platform virtual machines that are capable of representing and controlling a wide variety of tools over commonly available interfaces such as USB. Additionally, a matching C library assists in developing microcontroller firmware for building custom modular hardware elements that can communicate with the virtual machine. A spectrum of unique fabrication tools controlled using the Gestalt framework are presented as case studies which elucidate both the successes and limitations of our approach.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This dissertation is a theoretical research on the concepts and ideas of Frederick Perls so as to improve the study of the Gestalt Therapy. Therefore, to keep in accordance with its central theory, it is necessary to resort to contextualized historic and epistemological literature in order not to lose track of its core route and to renovate the understanding of its scientific and philosophical concepts. Gestalt Therapy came to be with the American counterculture movement. Thus, it was disseminated and spread away from the academic centers. Recently, there have been academic studies whose objective is to systematize the Gestalt theory. Research, the very frame of this study, has offered a comprehensive overview of Frederick Perls' theoretical production (Berlin, 1983 - Chicago, 1970), being Frederick Perls himself the founder of Gestalt theory, as well as its main advertiser. Perls' life was very rich in cultural experiences, as he lived in an avant-garde European environment of the arts, philosophy, and science in the beginning of the 20th century. More than a decade later, he lived in South Africa while in exile. He also lived amongst the most vanguard American movements, mainly in New York and California, in the 50s and the 60s. Nevertheless, despite having launched the foundations of the Gestalt Therapy through his books, seminars and workshops, and having been held responsible for its main concepts, Perls' work, yet original and strong, is still considered fragmented. His first book, Ego, Hunger and Aggression (1942/2002), as well as his posthumous book, The Gestalt Approach (1973/2012a), have been used as a starting point to our analysis. This study, which considers the cultural context theory underling each of the works, links distinct propositions to three different periods: 1942, 1951, and 1969. This form of analysis prioritizes temporal, cultural and theoretical factors, allowing us to emphasize the relevance of each book, its theme and object of study. Within this panorama, we have attempted to focus on the transition and the ruptures of Perls' in each of these periods. Quite detailedly, we have tried to examine the influence of Psychoanalysis on Perls' line of thought. Likewise, we have sought to examine whether there is a common thread which permeates Perls' theoretical trajectory and what his works have established as theory and clinical proposal. It is our wish to have offered an in-depth study of Perls' theoretical route in the attempt to having recovered the real spirit of his search and production.
