Abstract:
The aging population is growing increasingly more diverse, with one in four older adults from an ethnic minority group by 2050, while the nursing force will largely remain members of a single race White population. The purpose of this review is to appraise the state of nursing knowledge in relationship to meeting the needs of elders in unique racial/ethnic groups using two approaches: evaluating the efficacy of current knowledge and evaluating the state of nursing knowledge about ethnocultural gerontological nursing based on an integrative review of nursing literature. Thirty-four articles were reviewed. Most articles used qualitative methodology focused on a single ethnic group, with several articles focused on health promotion/prevention. Cultural perspectives were better addressed than aging concepts and few articles integrated ethnocultural and gerontological nursing concepts. This evaluation indicates many gaps in the knowledge base about ethnocultural gerontological nursing. Specific areas for future knowledge development are identified.

Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss how genetics will affect gerontological nursing. The chapter will answer two questions: (1) Which aspects of genetics will be most relevant to future gerontological nursing practice? and (2) What will be the impact of genetics on the future of gerontological nursing education and research? MEDLINE was searched for relevant articles from 1995 to 2001 using the key words aging, genetics, geriatrics, nursing education, research, and gerontology. CRISP was searched using the thesaurus terms education/planning, genetics, health education, model design/development, psychological model, pubic health curriculum, behavioral/social science research, and research nursing/genetics. A total of 101 nursing and nonnursing articles were reviewed. Research reports were selected if they focused on issues related to gerontological nursing. Articles were reviewed that had application to genetic nursing, complex diseases, and genetics. The evolution of the science of genetics will revolutionize gerontological nursing and affect future nursing education and research as the concepts of genetic science and the technology they generate are translated into everyday clinical practice. Genetic discoveries in common complex diseases will affect care provided by gerontological nurses in the 21st century. Gerontological nurses must move quickly to recognize this genetic paradigm shift and to incorporate genetics issues into their nursing practice.

Abstract:
Background. This study aimed to conduct a literature search to determine research hotspots in the field of gerontological care education in China and abroad. A knowledge of the focus of research conducted abroad may assist Chinese educators in determining the shape of gerontological care education in the future. Methods. The “Web of Science Core Collection” and “CNKI” databases were searched for literature on gerontological care education published from 2010 to 2020. CiteSpace software was used to display the knowledge map of co-occurrence of keywords, and an evolution trend map of research hotspots in recent 10 years was constructed. Results. From 2010 to 2020, the focus of foreign gerontological nursing education research was on the training of gerontological nursing personnel; the development of elderly care services; and education and training in dealing with patients with senile delirium and dementia. The focus of gerontological nursing education research in China was primary care education, training of senior elderly nursing personnel, talent training mode reform, training of nursing staff, and career development paths for geriatric nursing staff. Conclusions. Foreign geriatric nursing education research focuses on cultivating talents, mental health services for the elderly, innovating the mode of pension, and the care of patients with disorders such as dementia and delirium, while in China, the emphasis remains on gerontological nursing personnel training. Attention to research developments in other countries may assist Chinese educators to promote the development of geriatric nursing education in our country.
